Why would a greengrocer travel the world to sell a single cart of cabbages? Are the cabbages so bad that the news spreads like wildfire (“I heard Sung’s cousin’s skin turned green and that he hasn’t left the house since”), forcing him to move towns every few days? Have we actually ever seen him sell a single cabbage? Or is his cart always full? If he does sell cabbages off-screen and is not travelling with the same cart of cabbages, where does he get new ones? Is it plausible he's first travelled back home every time we encounter him in a new Earth Kingdom town? Is it plausible we just happen to stumble upon him whenever he's gotten new products? Or are the cabbages merely a cover for a larger conspiracy? In this essay I will

Sparrow's Flight
Sparrow hadn't been anticipating that his first encounter with that strange man would go like this. To be fair though, it would only have been a matter of time before he was spotted watching him from afar. He probably should've planned a better excuse.
"Argh!" Sparrow shrieked in surprise as the strange man appeared in front of him. Was that his ability? Teleportation? Sparrow scrambled backwards in shock.
"It's rather rude to spy on people," the strange man stated, fluffy cyan hair falling over his eyes. The strange man moved the strands so they didn't block his vision. "Now who might you be, weird person stalking me?"
He faltered in his answer. "Sp-Sparrow," he replied, stuttering madly. "My name's Sparrow. A-a-and you?"
"Scott S. Major!" The man said with a grin. "But you can call me Scott instead."
Sparrow squinted at the rings of energy around Scott's arms. The rings pulsed and glowed faintly with their respective blue and orange lights. What did they feel like? Soft? Hard? Rough? Did they feel like nothing at all? Or maybe water? Sparrow reached his hand out and, before he could even tell what he was doing, gently touched the rings.
There was an instant reaction in Scott. He smiled, pupils dilating like a cat. A low hum escaped his lips. The rings glowed a tad brighter.
Not long after, Sparrow saw a tiny beam of orange particles shoot out from Scott and connect the two of them. The particles dissipated almost immediately.
"What did you do?" he muttered quietly. Sparrow carefully retracted his hand. Some hybrids were dangerous. He couldn't just assume that Scott would be one of the pacifists when so many hybrids caused harm.
"This!" Scott launched himself into the air. Ten, twenty, thirty feet. And still going. Sparrow watched on, his mind archiving every second so he wouldn't forget. He couldn't.
Then Sparrow felt a tugging in his chest. Like a rope being pulled. His hand rose to tap his chest in curiosity.
Before he could blink, Sparrow was flung into the air. Scott now stood where he had previously. Wind whipped against his body as he fell to the ground. Shrieking, his arms flailed wildly. A myriad of high-pitched screams tore from his lips and rang in his ears. He'd misjudged Scott, and now he was gonna die. He was gonna die. He'd die and it'd be his fault for trusting Scott so easily. This wasn't how he wanted to go! Not falling from a height because he hadn't been on his guard.
Sparrow squeezed his eyes shut tight.
He landed.
He...wasn't dead?
Slowly, Sparrow's eyes fluttered open. Scott grinned at him. He looked down and saw that Scott had caught him.
Oh.
Sparrow sprung out of Scott's arms in a frenzy.
"Why would you do that? I could've died!" Sparrow screamed. Scott laughed, a mellifluous and whimsy sound. He kept laughing, tears pricking his eyes and clutching his stomach. Scott's shoulders shuddered with heavy full-body laughter.
"I-I'm sorry, I couldn't r-resist! It's to-too easy!" Scott eventually took several deep breaths, and wiped the tears from his eyes.
Sparrow huffed and folded his arms. "That was rude, y'know."
"How 'bout I make it up to ya then? I can grab some food and we can talk." At the suggestion, Sparrow smiled. This could be his opportunity to interview a hybrid! He could learn how Scott got his powers, how they impacted his lifestyle, and more!
"I'd say it's a deal." Sparrow's wrist was grabbed by Scott, and a ring of orange and blue particles floated around them. The world fell dark, and a brief bout of nausea decided to strike, but when everything was visible again he relaxed.
"Come on in," Scott said, opening the door to his home. "I'll get the cabbage rolls out."

Netflix Avatar: the Last Airbender episode 3, here I come!
I like that they’re showing the discontent amongst the fire nation so early.
Azula is so adorable and squishy faced, I love it. It really highlights how SCREWED UP she is.
Zhao makes me want to punch him every time he opens his mouth, so good job. And poor Zuko, he tries so hard and fails so bad.
Katara may hide her rage, but it’s still there, bubbling away, deep inside…
THE CABBAGE MAN!!!!!!!!
Omg, Teo is so cute I want to tuck him into bed and read him a story!!
Ty Lee my love! And Mai! I can’t wait to see what the three girls can do.
Why is the fire nation spy wandering around Omashu in a red robe?? He’s just asking for Jet to murder him.
Ohhh… it’s an ambush. That makes sense. Ooh, double ambush!
Yeah, remember the sunrise, Katara. And who rises with the sun????? (I don’t know if they’re gonna make zutara canon this go round, but I will latch on to any crumb of subtext anyways!)
Zuko being a snobby prince, Azula scheming, Iroh grabbing a white lotus tile…
The scarf!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Uh oh, Zuko is NOT happy that Aang has been reading his diary.
My CABBAGES!!!!!!!
Iroh!!
All in all, excellent episode!

My sister texted me the other day, telling me how her job likes to have a “thesis” night, or what I like to call “crazy headcanon night” where people make PowerPoint presentations about random shit they like and she asked me this:
Sister: We might do like a PowerPoint party at work (where everyone gets 5 mins to talk about any topic of their choosing, super fun) and I was thinking of a hyper-specific fan theory about atla…I don’t have any ideas except maybe that the cabbage man is actually some world spy or something XD
Me: Cabbage man has a monopoly on all leaf based produce. Literally he is the only one we see in the show selling cabbages
My sister: There we go, that’s my thesis

OK ANASTASIA AND DMITRI HEADCANONS BECAUSE ILTSM (both musical and movie they've merged in my head)
- Dmitri doesn't know how to read. Which makes sense when you remember that he grew up in Imperial and Soviet Russia, so for someone of the working class it was very common to be uneducated. Anya is very determined to change that.
- Anya teaching Dmitri French is utterly hilarious because of one word. That word being "The." Dmitri yelling at a dictionary about WHY THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO SAY ONE WORD and WHY DOES THAT WORD EVEN EXIST IT DOESN'T NEED TO EXIST WE DON'T HAVE IT IN RUSSIAN and also WHY ARE HALF THE LETTERS SILENT THAT'S THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I'VE EVER HEARD and we couldn't forget WHY ARE THE LETTERS MAKING DIFFERENT SOUNDS??? WHY IS Н MAKING AN 'N' SOUND AND И MAKING AN 'I' SOUND ANYA I CAN ONLY LEARN ONE LANGUAGE AT ONCE STOP LAUGHING AT MY PAIN-
- Three words. Dmitri, Paris, Chocolate. Really anything that's not stale bread and cabbage in water but specifically chocolate. He's really cautious at first because obviously he's never had any in his life and he takes a bite and just- melts into nothing because it is the single-most delicious thing he had ever ingested and can he please have more- It's safe to say that he downed three entire chocolate bars in the space of 93 minutes and had no regrets.
- Anya spends a ridiculous amount of time orchestrating various pranks on Vlad and Dmitri because why not? The ones with Vlad were always really nice and friendly, like surprising him by speaking with him only in french, or making him think something was wrong so he'd go to the ballroom and find the gramaphone set up ready to play a polka. Dmitri was no spared any mercy. He got the trip sure, the fake spiders (he screamed bloody murder and Anya was dying of laughter for a solid ten minutes,) he got the sack of lentils that was actually full of rocks so when he went to bed it was... not pleasant. Hey, she was a wild child. (The pranks still persisted even after they got married, just not as mean... except for the spiders.)
- For some reason, idk why, but Dmitri seems like an artsy painter person. He doesn't think he is, but then he tries it and realises that he is very observant in the way light chances the hue of different objects and in how to catch the small things that make art lifelike. His favourite art style is a little cartoon that he does on the edges of notebooks and journals like a flipbook which keeps him entertained for ages.
- Dmitri likes flowers. Nuff said. Anya just buys him flowers constantly. The bigger and gaufier they are, the better. When questioned why, he simply says "they're pretty and I like pretty things."
- As much as Anya hated having to practice as a child, she is very talented at music. They have an old, 2nd hand upright that lives in the corner of their living room and when Anya gets the time she plays a little something on the piano. Sometimes it's a classic piece she learnt years ago that muscle memory still remembers or a little jazz that she's learning, or sometimes she just plays around with what sounds nice.
- Because I don't think Anya and Dima went back to Russia (because that's dumb why go back to the place that's trying to kill you,) Anya becomes a schoolteacher in France teaching English. The kids love her because she's firm but gentle and helps them all no matter what and sometimes gives them little treats if they've been very good. There was a rumor (in St Petersburg???) going around about a tall, brooding man that no one seemed to know who always looked grumpy and never spoke and many of the kids scared each other by theorizing that he was an evil spy coming to steal their food and toys. Imagine the shock they all felt when he knocked on the door one day with a satchel in hand and sheepishly smiles at Anya, who takes it with a smile, mutters something in a foreign language that was not English or French, and then KISSES HIM ON THE CHEEK????? SILENT MYSTERIOUS EVIL MAN GETS A KISS FROM SWEET, KIND FAIRY TEACHER????? Anya then explains that no he's not going to steal their food and toys and that he is in fact really sweet and he does speak but he's very self-councious because he's not fluent and his accent is thick and also he is her husband. SILENT MYSTERIOUS EVIL MAN ISN'T ACTUALLY SILENT EVIL AND MYSTERIOUS AND IS MARRIED TO SWEET KIND FAIRY TEACHER!?!?!??!
that's all for today folks до свидания (do svidanya) and dont die

Turnsgiving Day 4: What If?
I'm a tad late for this one, but hear me out: What if Turn had, in at least one story arc, decided to use a little more historicity?
The series, to phrase it just as pretentiously as John Graves Simcoe quoting Catullus, I hate, and I love. Why I do so, you ask? Because while the topic itself is compelling and I was happy to see a piece of media set in the 1770s, nothing in TURN, which as a piece of fiction only drawing loose inspiration from historical events sadly was marketed as decidedly more faithful to history than it actually was.
I see the necessity of simplifying, abbreviating, and leaving out simplifying events in order to built a drama series around history, but i wish we had gotten to see some more actual interpretations of historic events rather than being forced to follow the less than stellar, and in my eyes rather unsympathetic, main character manoeuvre himself into another sticky situation.
Another aspect that really irked me were the unsatisfying ends the female characters were given: from Abigail to Anna to Mary, they all deserved better.
Now, I am not a script writer, but
What if Mary Woodhull had decided to leave Abe for Henry Clinton?
Tumblr media
Mary Woodhull, about to leave a life of misery and cabbage-farming for good, print, colourised, c. 1780.
This sounds absolutely weird, I know, but please hear me out:
I really liked Clinton on Turn, despire his portrayal not having much in common with the man whose name he bears as a very openly homosexual, sociable person. The historical Clinton was the exact opposite of both these things, but it was refreshing to see a sympathetic portrayal of one of the British generals in an American TV show, and I have to say that I find his character deserved better than what paltry screentime he got, and I would have enjoyed to see more him! But alas...
Now historically, Clinton fell in love with a woman called Mary (Baddeley) while in America, a lady with a less than stellar husband who started out as his housekeeper, and ended up as his partner for life. By the time they embarked upon a relationship, Mary Baddeley, the daughter of a genteel family, had a son by a largely absent, cheating husband (whom Clinton took to regarding as his own) solely responsible for the family's social decline and strained finances. If that doesn't sound familiar...
In a marriage of my desire for more Clinton-screentime and a satisfying ending for Mary Woodhull, I could picture Mary being pressured by Abe to interview for the vacant position of housekeeper in General Clinton's household, and getting the job. What begins as a means for Abe to gain information on British military secrets slowly melts into a bashful romance between Sir Henry and Mary. In time, she decides to cease any spying for her husband as she does not wish to deceive the man who treats her with respect and warmth, which naturally causes friction between the couple.
Over time, things get a little more serious; Mary discovers that Clinton is secretly delighted by the presence of her son Thomas in his house, whom he treats affectionately, and rather sooner than later, there is a first kiss.
Mary, religious and aware what rumours of an alleged dalliance with her employer might do to her reputation, decides that, whatever her wishes, cannot allow herself to indulge the idea of a serious relationship, or even just a short dalliance with Clinton-- that is until she, visiting home, catches Abe cheating on her with Anna Strong.
Feeling that there is no way to salvage the marriage neither party had ever truly wanted, Abe having been in love with Anna Strong and she having been originally promised to Abe's late older brother, and tired of being the only one to ever put work into the relationship, bids farewell to her husband for good and returns to New York announcing that she is done with Abe, and her marriage.
In time, Mary follows Clinton back to England where she lives happily ever after in a London townhouse with Clinton, Thomas and the latter's new half-siblings.
If you want to read about the real Mary Baddeley and Henry Clinton, I have previously written a long post about them!

Tumblr media
𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞. Still married, yet no husband in sight, in the middle of a city with a particular redcoat on the prowl with a spy that’s also on his tail -- York City was not the exciting getaway it was years ago with the turn of the war. It seemed with each day, with each return, the city that once held Edmund’s awe had darkened as it was clear the British weren’t as powerful as once imagined. They were losing their grip on the colony and while Edmund stayed true to his King, he had learned of the snakes that had tainted his own side: the officials who laughed behind his back and the unchecked brutality that ran rampant. Anna had a right to be fearful, but he was afraid he couldn’t offer much in terms of safety. With Abraham close by, with Simcoe recognizing Edmund in the coffeehouse, either men were bound to seek him out again and Anna might be wedged in the middle once again.
A deep sinking feeling had taken hold of his gut when he saw her at his doorway and his grip tightened on his office door. Had she been looking for him? Hasn’t she done enough in their last meeting? If she could easily lie to his face and couldn’t give her own truth, he didn’t see why he had to take her pleas into account.
But this wasn’t the kind of man Edmund was. Looking into her wide, brown eyes, he felt a tug on his sympathy and with it, resurfaced his wish to protect her from harm. To protect her from Simcoe, from the mess the cabbage farmer often pulled her into. Willingly, or not.
He opened his mouth to breathe out a sigh and stepped back in the doorway. He opened the door further to allow her entry, giving her a broader view of his new office. It was smaller than the room he was given at Whitehall.
❝ You may come in, ❞ he lowly admitted her entry and turned on his heel to return behind his desk. As he sorted through his papers and stuffed them into various drawers, he was quiet until in the middle of the tense, silent air, he asked her a question.
❝ Is there a reason why you traveled to York City? ❞ There are familiar faces here and not all of them are friendly.

He was observant of travelers, but none really stuck to mind unless he could weasel some information from their eager paws, but he couldn’t see what was so eye-catching about Setauket. He spoke like a man that would argue that the city was better than any lousy countryside town, even if he admitted that he was a farmer. A farmer on a large plantation, sure, close to the city, but not the kind of farmer Abe was.
Maybe his competitive nature was getting to him, sizing this man up in hopes of catching onto his weaknesses if his crop supply was to overtake Abe’s tanking farm of maggot-infested cabbages. The troubled son was sure his father was well aware of this soon-to-be new resident if he was indeed eager to move in and to investigate the nearby towns. He’d have to mention it later when he visits for dinner. But even beyond a competitive view, there wasn’t something right with him that Abe couldn’t ignore. Could he be a British Spy? If Simcoe and Hewlett were aware of the Patriot leanings in town and the way recent trouble in Setauket seemed to justify the recent whispers of spies, what stopped them from enlisting a spy of their own to seek out the source? He’d have to be wary of him.
❝ Well, there’s plenty of towns close by with ample land for your farm, sir. ❞ Abe’s voice was heavy with disdain even as a smile spread upon his lips, not daring to fall back a step as this stranger loomed in close. His nostrils flared when he mentioned Abe being a family man. If he knew already that he had a family, a potential weakness that could be targeted if he was cruel enough, then what else did he know?

onto Episode 3!
Ooh, is this jet? Also Siege of Ba Sing Se mentioned? (And no, this isn‘t Jet, but I appreciate more rebels beeing shown!) The fire effect behind the throne is so good! Same for Ozais monologue, it shows his ideology pretty well.
Azula spying was such a good twist! I actually like how she looks here, she looks much more like a kid.
Cabbage-man! And I think this might be Haru! Also I like them allready changing into Earthkingdom-clothes! Haru and Katara flirting a bit is just very fun and also Sokkas reactions! And Omashu looks so cool! I love how clearly diffrent it looks from Kyoshi! Also Teo and his inventor-dad allready appearing is very neat! Inlove how they immediatly think about how Aang could be used for figthing, it makes a lot of sense for them to think so. I also really like the little subplot with the bombing!

Alta Netflix review ep 2 and 3
Spoilers
Suki and Sokka were adorable. Suki didn’t know how to flirt while sokka was like damn this girl is a way better warrior than me. They were very cute.
Sukki mum being the leader of khyoshi village was such an interesting story idea.
Kyoshi was so fucking sick!!! So I haven’t see the animated version in a minute but was it common knowledge that the avatar was a past life of the previous incarnation? Becuase it seems like Aang didn’t really know a whole lot about being the avatar in the Netflix version.
Ep 3 thoughts
All the political intrigue is interesting with spies in omashu and rebels in the fire nation.
I think it’s really interesting that they brought Azula and ozai in so early.
The actress for Azula is doing an amazing job.
I really like the mechanic and teo being introduced in this episode as opposed to a remote airbender temple which is destroyed by the mechanic. That episode really pissed me off becuase that is Aang culture. Like how the hell could they destroy something like that!!
Also zhao sucks! Is he from Canada?
Omashu is gorgeous!!!
Oh yeah jets gang is probably killing them .
Katara actress isn’t the best but she leagues above m nights katara!
Jet and katara trauma bonding!!
Pai shao tile!!!
Lt. Jee sticking it to Zuko by being a spy!!!
Zuko thinking his dad is honorable enough to not blow buildings up like I’m babe he burned you! Yer dad ain’t shit!
Cabbage man!!!
Zutara!! The scarf!!
Jet a little psycho!
First Zuko and Aang fight! This so funny!!! Pooor Zuko enemy of baskets everywhere!
Zuko is like you read my dairy!!!!
I love iroh just scarfing himself for his son!!!

Live Reacting Live Action AtLA - ep 3
DANGER: Spoilers all up in here. Keep scrolling if you need more time to get to this spot in the series (or if you just don't care what I think about it. LOL)
..
If you're sticking around, let's get ready to ramble on about things that cross my mind as I watch episode 3.
..
Hmm, well this would have been a more effective "surprise" if they hadn't been showing Azula's actress for ages. Clearly this resistance group hadn't watched the marketing.. lol.. I do appreciate Azula being more obvious that she's a young teen.
"I might even listen to them" (Aang, about the NWT bending teachers).. now that would be a change. Ha!
I'm very meh on the way they've gone with Zhao. Random crew of Zuko reminds me more of Zhao.. heh.. But mainly the working-together (well.. supposedly together, we know he's a weasel) is throwing me off. I loved the one-upsmanship of the bad guy vs bad guy thing.
MY CABBAGES!
Always bummed we never got to see Toph in Omashu. Not that that fits this series at all, since she's not here yet bu...
Hold up. Teo/Mechanist are in Omashu, not an air temple? Unsure about this. They better put some of the fun of Omashu episode back in here. We didn't get penguin sledding, havent yet gotten mail chute sliding.. or even Bumi's trials of craziness. There's time yet though.
Azula as a crackshot archer. Hmm, wonder if she'll be one of the YuYan? Could be an extra layer when we get to the Blue Spirit part, if it's similar.
Hook swords comin' out, time to kick fire nation spy bootie! (I'll cheer for you until you go for innocent people, Jet. Assuming they left that bit in.) Also.. rest of the Freedom Fighters. Woot! Not as cool with the choice to not have Sokka there to be skeptical about it.. but then he's needed with the Mechanist, so.. Maybe he and Aang will be added in later?
Hmm, is Aang the one going to know Jet's leading shady dealing? Go little dude!
Oookay, Azula getting Zhao on her side.
Loving the sibling fight lol and I'm glad to be seeing a little more assertiveness from Katara. That temper we all loved from the first one. (even if she's wrong here lol)
Hooray for a fun Aang-Zuko fight
Well, I got my slide moment. Don't feel as fulfilled since it's high-stress rather than light-hearted joyride reminiscing.
MY CABBAGES! (will always warrant a comment)
Oh no, a cliffhanger? Well, I need sleep so it'll have to keep on hangin.
..
Overall, I could see how they were working in things from Jet and from the Northern Air Temple (obviously), and from the Waterbending Scroll (the learning of the water whip).. just sticking it in this. Mainly though, it's a huge letdown to fire up an episode called Omashu and NOT get to see Bumi. And stripping most of the fun things from the episode - Aang's old man costume, him on the mail chutes, his Bumi flashbacks. Or even from the other episodes referenced.. I quite loved the showboating glider competition between Aang and Teo at the temple. Bumi better still be allowed to be a delightfully offbeat crazy old man in the next one. I don't want it fun all the time but man.. you can't take ALL the moments that spark joy. Don't be reverse-Kondoing this. LOL You've got to leave me with more than "well, the fight scenes looked cool and the music was on point." The other part that got taken away was Katara absolutely laying into Jet when she found out he was crooked. I absolutely love her strong personality, and I'm sad we have really not gotten to see it much yet. Fingers crossed ep 4 will bring me everything I want.. but tomorrow. I'm tired.
