Most people have no idea about how much craft goes into quilting or how much quilting as a craft, art, and even a science has been evolving in recent years. So here's my personal appreciation post

And btw the flat images do NOT even do these quilts justice, especially in terms of the absolutely amazing and detailed texture embroidery that a lot of quilters are using these days. Up close the texture and the sheer detail of many of them is just stunning

These are all from the Road to California quilt show 2023

1st Place: Portrait

Title: Sharing the Moment Maker: Hollis Chatelain Quilter: Hollis Chatelain Design Basis: Maker's Original Design African-American women are a powerful force in motivating their families and communities to vote. I wanted to create a piece about this and highlight the fact that African-American women did not receive the right to vote in all 50 states until 1965 when the Voting Rights Act was passed. I met Phyllis at a rally. I was drawn to her and asked if she would be my model. Without hesitation she said yes. She later brought her friend Loretta with her.

1st Place: Naturescape

Title: Augustinii Maker: Andrea Brokenshire Quilter: Andrea Brokenshire Design Basis: Maker's Original Design “Augustinii” is a blue/purple variety of rhododendron my momma planted within her forest garden. I was lucky to be home on when it was in bloom. When I see this quilt, I am reminded of my momma and how she loves to tend her garden and “grub in the dirt.”

Title: Leap of Faith Maker: Kestrel Michaud Quilter: Kestrel Michaud Design Basis: Original design In this Steampunk fantasy world, men and women have taken to the skies on ships held aloft by hot air, ingenuity, and luck. Faith’s favorite past-time is bungee-jumping off the side of her airship, with Bubo, her pet clockwork owl. This quilt depicts the photo Faith took on her latest jump to test her brand-new camera and selfie stick.

2nd Place: Naturescape

Title: Homage to Birches Bare Maker: Jessica Noble Quilter: Jessica Noble Design Basis: Fabric recreation of Kesler Woodward's Birches Bare, acrylic on I fell in love with Kesler Woodward’s Birches Bare painting and knew I had to create it in fabric. I cut about 1,700 pattern pieces out of freezer paper and then fused fabric, through the fall of 2019 until the pandemic started. During this time, I homeschooled my two children and the quilt sat in quarantine. I quilted this freehand on my midarm in the winter of 2021. I managed to take the majority of the summer of 2022 on the binding.

2nd Place: Pictorial

Title: Toroweap Overlook Maker: Sandra Mollon Quilter: Sandra Mollon Design Basis: Derived from a photo Toroweap Overlook, in the Grand Canyon National Park, is an incredible view of the Colorado River. When John Slot sent me the photo to consider for an art quilt, I realized the complexity of the amount of the pieces it would require, but knew I had to do it. Raw edge fused, machine quilted, small amounts of media.

3rd Place: Pictorial

Title: Catch it Yuri! Maker: Hiroko Miyama and Masanobu Miyama Quilter: Hiroko Miyama Design Basis: Maker's Original Design Inspired by dogs’ action. Yuri, golden retriever big jumped to catch a ball and Ponta, mix hardly waited his turn. Dogs and girl were fused appliquéd.

4t3 Conversion: Littledica Soft Tummy Overlay (Accessory)

I really wanted to give my sims some soft bellies without removing all their muscle and vein definition.

To show the before-and-after effect, my sims in the pictures have the muscle definition slider set to 100%.

Matching the colour to your sim's skin tone exactly can be tricky, so you might have to switch between live mode and CAS a few times to get it right. You can see I left it a bit too light on Rainer in one of the pics butt fuck it

The ab muscle definition might still appear visible in CAS with this accessory on, but it will be covered up in live mode.

This accessory goes great with the torso mesh edits in my downloads btw 💋

What is your typical art medium / drawing program? The textures are beautiful 😩

Art I post online is mostly digital. I use Krita 5.1.5 and I got brushes I use form this site below!

I have tested quite a lot of brush packs until I found the brushes I feel the most comfy with.

Dirty chalk for children (...because I'm such a child sometimes xd) Honestly it's amazing, most textures in my works are made with assistance of these.

Rotating light brushtips WIP - has pretty insane real paint effects! I don't use it much but they are good!

hi again ! i read your hot dog scene and the way you describe food with such love and detail is honestly wild and so fun to read, and i was wondering if you had any tips on writing about food/experiencing a new food for the first time ? one of my characters (ava, who just found evangelion on the cloaked web and binged it, btw) has had a very small variety of food before she broke out of the lab she was raised in, and the initial part of her my other protagonist's storyline is centered around food and candy to some extent. i want to really encapsulate the joy that new tastes and textures bring to ava but every time i try to write about food itself and not the fun of the process of making it, i sound really cringy. i'm personally a casual food enjoyer, no gourmet by any means, so that's on my part. anyways sorry for this huge fucking paragraph lmao if you have any quick tips i would really appreciate it!!!! i hope you and Wife and the cats are doing well :))))

Quick tips. That's funny that you think I'm capable of that.

So when it comes to food descriptions my main focus for my own writing is perspective. Different people focus on food in different ways, and this is showcased in the Songbird Elegies between each POV.

Edgar's a chef, and he grew up going hungry often because of parental neglect, so he has a deep passion and love for food. He knows how to detect distinct ingredients in a meal and can acknowledge how textures mix to create something new. He wishes he had the money to go to a molecular gastronomy restaurant back when that was a thing. He can distinguish mushrooms by taste and smell. Edgar can talk to you for about ten minutes on the uses of saffron. It is beyond what is reasonable for someone in his industry.

Scott also loves food, but he isn't nearly as educated about it. He can sort of cook, but he grew up mainly with lovingly-crafted home cooked meals prepared by his mom and the other adults of the community. Food is emotional for him. If he is having a bad day, a three-dollar cup ramen and a gourmet soup will have the same effect. He just appreciates a hot meal. When Edgar makes him a Japanese curry in chapter one of Blind Trust I think he says that the smell "inspires without intimidating", or something to that effect. His view of food is much more abstract.

Tenzin does not think about food that often. She knows when it's good and when it's bad, and can gauge the general temperature of it. I think she's probably the worst cook of the three, but she does still try to cook. She thinks food is just a thing you eat to live, but it's nice to eat stuff that's good, and her mind doesn't go much farther than that. When she eats something it reflects that.

The only actual tip I have is that if you're describing a meal you've never had, I get a lot of use from referencing the novels before recipes for that meal. That's what I did when describing some moussaka Scott's mom makes in book two. I've never had moussaka, but I was able to break it down into things I do have reference for (cream, potato, beef, tomato), and sort of jam out from there.

I tried to think of what I think of when I eat food and realized my first reference point is texture and then emotion and THEN flavor. I'm more Scott than Edgar in that sense.

Im not an artist so i dont know how it works, but i just read an interesting post on Wolvden (i know its not the same game, but, yno, same team) about how the rejection/approval times can take up to months, Xy will condescend and mansplain about the art process and decors get rejected for the most asinine reasons. Anyone can confirm/deny?" OH BOY! Now this is my niche! I have been making custom decors for around a year now, and have over 50 approved decors as of now. And god damn, I have a scathing review for the custom decor process. First Claim: rejection/approval times can take up to months Yeah. Sounds about right, especially for Wolvden. I've never submitted a custom decor there (I've rolled over a grand total of 5 times on that site) but unless you're well known to the art team (took me a couple of months of weekly decor submissions to get to it) responses will take anywhere between 1 day and 2 weeks,

Second claim: Xy will condescend and mansplain about the art process

In my experience, it hasn't ever seemed that way. BUT, Xylax has a habit of being very unclear in his denials. As in, he will give a reason, but like... how the hell do you fix it? He will deny detailed decors for being 'too pixelated' when there are official decors with the thinnest lineart known to man. I'm looking at you, African Flower Ornaments [White]. Where the FUCK is your 1.5-2px thick line art.

Xylax's standards move based on how the hell he feels sometimes. I got this denied, but this decor is approved? (both are mine, btw.) Winter Mane [White] - Denied 3/4 times. Might start work on it again, if I can get it approved. Was denied... for line art being too light and not having a fur texture. Lovely. What the fuck.

Monstera [Green], my first ever approved decor.

Not to mention the decor submission process just feels totally outdated, like a lot of the rest of the site. I really hope it gets overhauled, or, at least, when decors are made to be able to fit mutations, they add that to the custom decors ability. I would hate having to spend 70gb per piece of decor for my decors to fit all major mutations (Felis, Ferus, Smilus, Primal, Leopon, Tigon, and the Jaglions) I've been told Spirited will be added to the custom decor submission categories for posed decors, SO, it's not out of the range of possibility. I am begging you to infodump about RDP hardware bugs

okay so full disclosure i'm not super studied on the hardware in excruciating detail-- I wish I could be, but that's all a bit out of my league! So what I know is largely limited to the snags I've personally walked into when messing around with libdragon, a free and open source library that's largely intended to help you sidestep a lot of these hardware bugs and odd quirks. so with that disclosure out of the way! The RDP is the Reality Display processor, a rasterizing unit that takes triangle data processed by the RSP (Reality Signal Processor) and fills in pixels to push to the framebuffer. So it's responsible for rendering most of the actual image you're seeing on the screen. Along with the high-latency RDRAM, the rather slow RDP is much bemoaned as one of the primary bottlenecks for performance. Tri count ain't the killer on N64, nah it is fillrate and memory access. The particular component I've dealt with more in detail is the Color Combiner, or CC. It's a fixed function pipeline that can be configured with various sources to determine the color of a triangle. These sources can include 2 texture slots, vertex color, primitive/environment color (explicitly defined color registers), the result of the first CC cycle (if configured to 2-cycle mode), and so on. It has quite a few quirks to it!! For starters, clamping is... kind of broken? values for the RGB and Alpha components are intended to be clamped between 0 and 255, but this only sort of works. Anything up until 383 is correctly clamped down to 255, but go above this (up to 511) and it actually wraps back around to 0. This makes any additive operations tricky to pull off, as you can quickly wind up with overflow that appears unintentionally dark. In 2-cycle mode, TEX0 actually refers to TEX1, and TEX1 refers to the next pixel of TEX0. This introduces more unintended visual nonsense so you've gotta be careful how you're storing and recalling your textures. By far the worst thing I've run into concerns sign-extension. The fixed formula for the CC is as follows:

(A - B) * C + D

Slots A, B, and D all have a special 9-bit sign extension for arithmetic, whereas slot C does not. Why? Who knows! This makes slot C more prone to overflow/underflow, and of fucking course it's in the multiplication slot!! If you're using 2-cycle mode, then you really want to avoid using the result of cycle 1 in slot C of cycle 2, as it's much easier for wacky nonsense to occur.

This was something I ran into when configuring my first custom CC setup! Left is intended, right was my initial result with COMB in slot C of cycle 2. The idea was to take a black and white intensity texture, use vertex color for white, and multiply that by a chosen primitive color for black. This quirk was a pain in the ass to discover!! But luckily it was trivial to fix given what I was going for. You might not always be so lucky tho!! :D Anyway that's most of what I've got, but there's a lot more quirkiness with the RDP that's documented over on N64brew, v v good resource. The N64 is a pain in the ass to work with, but I love this stupid console so much I will go thru hell just to make things on it but uhhhh yeah thanks for listening to the dump!! btw i've yet to find someone that can beat me at diddy kong racing. i have a reward for u if u can manage to pull it off tho. it's a secret, but for listening to me infodump lemme let u in on a little secret: the reward is kissing u. with tongue

i start w a canvas 1000x1000pixels, that way u can get a lotta detail in and then it looks even better when u inevitably shrink it for whatever ur using it for

use shape tool to make a circle. hold shift + click while dragging the tool to make a perfectly symmetrical circle. (or dont im not ur mom)

merge the shape layer down onto a raster layer.

now ur basically just adding textures n shit. i like doing it Hussie Style and using google images to add texture, basically just taking that shit and bastardizing the hell out of them through fucking around w/ the contrast/exposure/colors/etc. u can also use the photoshop generative tool to generate random texture shit (i love putting in nonsensical prompts to confuse the hell out of it--my favorite results are the really shitty ones that look like terrible collages), but its the same process for each one.

lets make up a planet. Land of Horns and Thorns.

i like to use satellite images to get that planet-y texture. i try to think of a relevant land-type. thorns are triangular, so are mountains. lets grab this image

next what we're about to do is called "transformative use"

copy+paste image on a new layer

right click on the image's layer, select "create clipping mask"

this should be the result:

but its a little flat. so lets make it rounder. i use the Liquefy tool in photoshop, but im sure theres other ways of doing it.

click filter > liquefy, then make sure u have the bloat tool selected. now bloat that mfer to ur liking. its ok if it looks a bit shit right now. when uve bloated it as much as u want, click ok. now u have smth like this

now start messing w/ filters and colors. i try to ascertain the mood im going for with a planet. Land of Horns and Thorns sounds a bit whimsical, but maybe subtly dangerous? so, translating that to color, maybe it's fun and colorful, but like, in the same way those deadly poisonous frogs are fun and colorful. maybe there will be some dark pits as well. lets see what we can do

i start w/ messing around w/ contrast. go to image > adjustments > brightness/contrast. fuck around w it to ur liking. this is what it looks like now

already we're starting to get some of those dark pits i wanted. lets make the colors pop a little more by messing w the exposure.

u can also mess w/ the vibrance, hue, saturation, etc. basically all those lil tools in the image > adjustments are ur best friends now. i like to increase the saturation to get that shit-jpeg look u see in homestuck sometimes

now create a new layer. we go back to google images. im gonna look up some closeups of thorns

this works fine. copy & paste. create clipping mask. bastardize the image however u want, similar to the first one. using the liquefy tool helps to get shit into place where u want it.

made it a little more abstract.

played w/ the color settings. i dont want this one to be as vibrant b/c im going to be using the layer modes. however, i do want to posterize the hell outta this

ok i like how it looks in luminosity mode.

however, i kinda wanna change the colors of the bottom layer now. lets use a gradient map (image > adjustments > gradient map). just hit ok when the prompt comes up, we can detail it in the side panel.

if u just click the actual gradient bar itself, itll open up the gradient editor. there u can make ur own custom gradient and specify the colors n shit. theres also a bunch to choose from.

so, i think that looks pretty fucking cool. i love the contrast, but i kind of want to see what it looks like in other colors too. we head to the hue/saturation tool.

there, i like that. a bright, poisonous color with the threatening blotches of red. now lets make this mfer look like a planet. merge everything into one layer if ya want

the gradient tool is now ur best friend. i like to fuck w the gradients, one of my favorite effects is making a sorta halo gradient (basically just copy the opacity controls i have, im sure u can also google how to do it) and merge the gradient to an empty layer

and, yknow, just mess with the settings

u can add gradients to make it look more like a 3d object. mess w the colors and settings n shit

we add some clouds now. i just use 1px pencil tool. try to use the curvature of the planet to inform how u draw the clouds. think about how u want them to be formed (swirling around the center? stretched out? etc) and think about what u think the atmosphere would be like on ur planet. a completely barren planet like mercury may have no clouds at all. or maybe its like jupiter, where its nothing but clouds? also think about the anemology of the planet. how do the winds form, what directions do they go?

i think the Land of Horns and Thorns sounds like a place that would have a good amount of thunderstorms, so lets make the clouds black. mountains are pretty windy, so maybe the clouds will sporadic but dense.

fuck around w/ it til ur tired of looking at it. then make that fucker smaller (the average mspa panel is 650x450. unless ur planet is taking up the entire page, u can probably get away with smt smaller.) **make sure u have interpolation set to bicubic or nearest neighbor.

and then ur done.

side notes: literally do whatever u want tbh, u can do as many layers as u want, use whatever tools u want. thats pretty much the basic format ive got.

Protag Teruya AU - Sora Design

Hi, Sora!

With Teruya as the Protag and Akane still alive and running around, Sora’s role and creation is very different compared to her canon counterpart. And because Mikado takes on the support role in the story, her reason for existence must also be different. So I thought, “Why not change Sora’s design? You know, for fun.” So I did.

Since AI!Mikado doesn’t exist in this AU as Mikado would have no reason to fuck around with the Alter Ego program (and Kokoro would probably keep him away from it so he didn’t catch onto her plans of reviving Utsuro through a killing game with said program), I ended up just...combining Sora and AI!Mikado together. She’s still the Sora we all know and love, she’s just more of a chaotic gremlin that likes to banter with her father, Mikado. And since their relationship in this AU is far better than the one in canon, for obvious reasons, I felt it was best to represent how close they really are by making Sora look a little like her creator. Her hair has a more wavy texture, her eyes are flatter and a paler shade of brown, and while her hair is blonde to represent AI!Mikado’s design, it still fades to gray like her creator’s hair. And as a nice little reference to Mikado’s mask, I gave Sora a punctuation mark underneath her eye, except it’s under her left eye and is an exclamation mark instead of a question mark. It helps make her design feel like her own while still having a clear connection to her creator. While her design is heavily based off of Mikado’s, Sora is still Sora with her low ponytail and scrunchie and her plaid collar, sleeves, and skirt.

Because Akane takes the role of the 16th student and Teruya is the Protag, Sora doesn’t get to participate in the Killing Game herself. But frankly, that’s probably for the best as there was a likely chance the Wheel of Fate would’ve sacrificed her at some point. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a role in the plot! If anything, she’s been trying to get into the Neo World Program from the outside to help stop the killing game or just contact somebody to try and help them escape with a reset code. I won’t go into further detail for spoiler reasons, but just know that she becomes a lot more important in Chapter 6.

Btw, her name Sora is actually an acronym. S.O.R.A. stands for “S.upportive O.bservant R.ecovery A.ssistant.” :]

not going to lie it’s fucking nuts how much the visual quality of kaf’s model and general production quality of her mvs has gone up over the past few years. with the introduction of her tsubame outfit a year ago her model was upgraded quite a bit but now that we finally have another “kaf in tokyo” mv it’s easy to make a direct comparison

obviously the quality of her hair went wayy up especially in the twintail area (can’t show it from a still image but not just from a texturing/mesh perspective with it being more silky and detailed, also in a physics way, the slight hover the twintails have over her chest is way less noticeable and the movement is smooth instead of blocky/unnatural) but also smaller things like them adding curve to her neck, blending the colors in her eyes (really obvious if you look at the dark blue on the upper half of her iris in both images, one is blended the other isn’t), changing her face shape to be a little less babyface and detailing out her bangs (which now have way more physics btw) and letting them hug her face a bit more instead of poofing out from her head

(sobbing over them showing her on this bridge again dw about it) KAF IS TALLER NOW AND LOOKS LESS LIKE AN ALIEN (i will always love you hinadori kaf) but also the environment here... the lighting added in post and kaf standing here just feels more natural and grounded, especially in motion because in old kaf mvs her feet just kinda slipped through the floor and weren’t stable on the ground and now she stands properly

when umi ni bakeru came out (middle image) i was really blown away by the increase in quality with integrating kaf into the environment (her colors actually match the environment more and she feels less pasted in) but now having that with her upgraded model AND HER NEW CASUAL DRESS CAUSE SHE’S NOT A HIGH SCHOOLER ANYMORE too is just really awesome.

idk if kamitsubaki is gonna keep doing “kaf in tokyo” mvs considering that the Year Of Tsubame:tm: didn’t have a single one (and tsubame doesn’t even show up in hito wo kidoru RIP) and this most recent one is definitely a nostalgia baiter but i hope they always come back to this style occasionally bc it’s why i fell in love with kaf’s music videos in the first place and they have a special place in my heart

I’ve been pretty scarce lately, haven’t I? last week this was because uni was demolishing me, but lately, it’s been more about, ehum, the downside of spending like 50% of your social time in Fire Emblem communities when a new game releases, precisely in the middle of the aforementioned demolishment by uni

I’m still probably going to be ignoring non-direct notifications for the next while or so, but now that I’ve finally gotten my hands on the shiny new toy too, I’m eager to become part of the problem for everyone else!

and on that note, I’m here to post my impressions of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes as of the start of ch4

maybe this should go without saying, but goddamn, the DIFFERENCE that it makes to be back to having a protagonist with their very own dialogue as well as a discrete personality. Shez and Arval’s back-and-forths really get the most out of the “gremlin living rent-free in your brain constantly complaining about your dumb ass decisions” by actually having two participants to it. even the none-too-revelant dialogue pick prompts are a lot nicer now that Shez will actually verbalize the option that you pick, which also means you really get the most out of all the funny and/or mean options-

also, Arval is cute and I want to pinch her cheeks no matter how gross the texture there probably is

plus she forced Shez not to call Alois out on telling dad jokes. she gets it

on a related note, I’ve only had this version of Byleth for like three voiced lines, and I’ve already seen more charisma than anything they’ve done in the entirety of Three Houses. y’know, Jeannie Tirado is a phenomenal voice actress -- actually giving her lines to read brings that out all of a sudden, who woulda thunk? (somewhere between this and Xander Mobus complaining about how few actual lines he had as Persona 5 Joker, I’m arriving at the perhaps bygone conclusion that one should maybe not waste highly talented voice actors on silent protagonists-)

anyway, it’s funny as hell to me that they went to all the bother of setting up the whole “hey, you’re a garreg mach student now!” thing, only to shut the academy down and send everyone home in 2 chapters. also I hope Leonie got a refund-

I’m digging the gameplay so far; I was a bit worried that it seemed to be trying to spin too many unique plates at once -- I will, of course, really see yet how all these interlocking systems hold up throughout an entire game, but in this early juncture, it actually feels like everything has a place and nothing is encroaching too hard on anything else.

on the other hand, though, I think I can see what people mean when they said the original Fire Emblem Warriors was surprisingly headache-inducing for a Warriors game. I enjoy the tactical aspect, but it feels like it comes at the detriment of direct gameplay; you decide what everyone’s going to do, it feels awesome, and then you’re like, wait, what am *I* going to do now-

(”I never quite understand which character I’d rather be playing as at a given time” was also a thing that hassled me in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, though, so I guess this is just how Warriors game are designed now. that, or I had it too good with the original Hyrule Warriors)

also, apropos of nothing, but I’d not realized how fucking sweet Ignatz’s new outfit is back at the character trailers. holy fucking hell the man is oozing drip alongside all that paint

(ETA: and how could I forget to mention Holst??? they had me at “ProZD is doing his voice btw” and what can I say, promised and delivered)

if you’ve been beholding my wretched reactions to things so far, though, you know what the thing I’ve REALLY been looking forward to in this game is. and...

just the ch4 basecamp has already hit me with TWO long documents about little details about the Alliance, including new details about the local economy as well as more lords, territories, and details thereof. even Acheron has a household name and even a full name now! and they went and gave him one of the most badass fucking full names of anyone in this verse-- but I digress; I can see I’m going to be eating out of this game’s hand when it comes to worldbuilding. which is to say, I’m high up in the clouds right now, ready for Claude’s first named murdercousin (brother, apparently?) to fly by with his wyvern and kill me instantly.
