Orchid and jasmine for the ask game 😘😘
Oh Cass, you are asking the hard questions here!
Orchid- For me, I think a song I consider to be perfect is "Long Live (Taylor'sVersion)" by Taylor Swift. It isn't my most favorite Taylor Swift song, but it's in the top ten for sure. I just think it's a beautiful story telling song moment that makes you feel something.
Jasmine- So, for this one, I have to reach back into my formative youth days, and I'm going to have to say "The Grest Gilly Hopkins" and "Because of Winn Dixie." Both of these books (and movies) are great, but both of them hit very close to home with some personal trauma that I was living during the time I had to read them for school. I felt very seen in these books, but they were also very distressing to me because I was reading about the same situation I was going through/ had just gone through and picking it apart in the name of public education.
send me an ask and I will answer

The Great Gilly Hopkins is an amazing story!
Hey guys! I’m here to do a review on the movie “The Great Gilly Hopkins!” I loved this movie when I watched it last week! The movie is about 12-year-old Gilly Hopkins, a troublemaker, who finds herself moved from foster home to foster home until she meets Maime Trotter. With the cast of Sophie Nelisse, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Octavia Spencer, Julia Stiles, Bill Cobbs, Billy Magnussen, Zachary…

People writing Undertale fanfiction where the fallen humans come back to life (I’ve seen it before and Asriel probably could’ve done it) should just make the fallen humans versions of  their  favorite characters from other stories who got awful endings so they get a happy ending for once
Mine are (obviously some of these characters have slightly different names and different details about their backstories to fit them in the world of Undertale):
Patience - Primrose Everdeen (I’m undecided about this one, as Patience fell first and their family is certainly all dead by the time the barrier falls - it’s either Primrose Everdeen or Alexandra “Zan” Ford from this weird book called “Saturday the Fifth of October” or something like that)
Bravery - a version of this character from an old really sad children’s book who was kidnapped and adopted by Lenape and then kidnapped back and ended up belonging nowhere (his Lenape name was True Son and I don’t remember what his original English name was)
Integrity - enby with first name Blue (amalgamated version of all the tragic characters from the Silmarillion, name is based on the names of Elured and Elurin)
Kindness - Shireen Baratheon (last name different, probably something Arabic like the name “Shireen” is)
Perseverance -  Galadriel “Gilly” Hopkins (because I had to have a Katherine Patterson character on the list)
Justice - I have no ideas, I need a male character to have a perfectly even gender ratio of Toriel’s children, probably someone like Anakin Skywalker who’s saved from becoming evil

Yesterday I read The Great Gilly Hopkins, and I just finished The Outsiders.
There’s a reason why I kept some of my childhood books. They say things that stick with you. And they’re damn good stories, even when they make me cry. Staying gold, and making Trotter proud. 💔😭
And poetry. Robert Frost, and Wordsworth. ❤️❤️❤️

The Great Gilly Hopkins isn't safe. Gilly's foster brother gets s* at one point during the night, audio and visual. And he gets s* again when Gilly's grandmother visits, audio only. I found both to be very triggering.

Teen Review Tuesday: The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson
Here’s a review from Ariana:
The Great Gilly Hopkins is about an 11-year-old girl named Galadriel (Gilly) who is in the foster care system. One day she goes to meet a family, Mrs. Trotter and William Earnest who is a seven-year-old little boy who is handicapped. Mrs. Trotter has a neighbor named Randolph who is blind. When Gilly first meets them, she thinks they are so annoying. As time passes, Gilly becomes closer to Mrs. Trotter, William, and Randolph. Gilly hopes every day that she will meet her birth mother.
I am recommending this book because I feel like it tells a great story. I feel like the author really accomplished her goal, which was to tell a great story and entertain people, especially kids. This book was such a great book! I recommend that you read the Gilly Hopkins book first, and then watch the movie.

21st century YA books are like "here is a fictional dystopia that was definitely not ripped directly from suzanne collins, in which everyone obeys an unquestioned world order. except our heroine, a 16 year old brunette girl who is Different Than Everyone Else" and late 20th century YA books are like "here is an incredibly fucked up chronicle of the worst 6 months of some random middle schooler's life. there are no happy endings here, only bittersweet ones that will change you forever. you are somehow the only one in your social circle who has ever heard of this book and no one will ever understand its impact on you"

so i just finished up “the great gilly hopkins” and i have really, really mixed feelings about this book. the book is about the title character trying to get to the birth mother who doesn’t care for her, and her bonding with her foster family (and part of her character growth is growing as a person and coming to care for these people and among other things... becoming less racist)
and then, in the end, she is forced to go live with her maternal grandmother and finds out that her mother doesn’t give a shit about her and she just wants to go back to her foster family but she can’t and her foster mother, who loves her so much, is like “your home is with your lonely grandmother now”.
i know that in real life people’s stories can’t always be wrapped with neat little bows and stories don’t always end up with a realization and life making sense (especially with kids in the foster system), but i feel like books should? i don’t know, i just feel like there could be more emotional wrap up in this book to make what feels like hasty emotional conclusions feel less hasty. it feels like it ends so abruptly after the realization that what she always thought was WASN’T what she wanted and that there’s no chance for her emotionally orient herself to her current situation and what she wants and why she can’t go back. i don’t feel like this is the sort of book that benefits from that uneasy being cut off mid story feeling
i want to change the ending to make it happier and while i understand why she didn’t end it that way, i also feel like she could have done THIS ending better

Leonard: What do you want?
Ray: Can I sit with you?
Leonard: *looks at all the empty seats around his table* These are all taken.
Ray: *starts to leave*
Leonard: It was a joke, you spaz. You can sit here if you want. Let's start with small sentences.
Ray: Cool.
Leonard: Smaller.
