Get to know me: favorite characters ➔ Peeta Mellark (The Hunger Games films, 2012-2015)
I just keep wishing I could think of a way to show them that they don't own me. You know, if I'm gonna die, I wanna still be me.

obviously catching fire is objectively the best hunger games movie but the non-book additional scenes from the mockingjay part 1 movie are some of the best scenes in the whole franchise.
adding effie in place of the prep team? watching the rebels extract the victors from the capitol as katniss “distracts” snow?? when the district 7 workers yell, “if we burn, you burn with us” right before blowing up the peacekeepers??? TRANSITIONING FROM KATNISS’ LAKE SCENE PROPO WHEN THE WORKERS MARCH TO BLOW UP THE DAM IN DISTRICT 5 WHILE THEY SING THE HANGING TREE?????
like yeah i love being in katniss’ head in the books but the district rebellions are just a devastatingly brilliant use of the advantages of the film medium

i think the worst thing the hunger games movies did was get rid of katniss’ friendships with the other victors in her time in district 13.
specifically finnick and johanna. the movies get rid of her and finnicks friendship as well as her trust in him even in the arena in catching fire. they did so much together in mockingjay because they were all the other had. they also got rid of a lot of finnick and katniss’ suffering. both of them are a HOT MESS in mockingjay and they don’t do them justice in the movies.
johanna really liked katniss even if they often argue. they were also roommates??? in mockingjay???? and that never happens in the movies. i also love finnick and johanna’s friendship and i with we saw more of that.
that being said i love the movies dearly so please don’t take this as “i hate the movies” and more as just “i wish we saw more of this”.

Rewatching The Hunger Games, as one does on a biannual basis, and I had the thought: "You know, as a 12 year old, maybe I was too harsh on Peeta."
I was a team Katniss as an independent single woman truther because I was like "Gale killed her sister and Peeta made like... a minimum of 3 attempts on her life!"
But, to be fair, Katniss also tried to strangle Peeta to death multiple times and she wasn't even under the influence of tracker jacker venom; she was just mad... aaaand they're all like approximately 16 (to 18 over the course of the books) and deeply traumatized so."

THE HUNGER GAMES APPRECIATION WEEK: QUOTES/LYRICS
Peeta walks me down to my room in silence, but before he can say good night, I wrap my arms around him and rest my head against his chest. His hands slide up my back and his cheek leans against my hair. “I’m sorry if I made things worse,” I say. “No worse than I did. Why did you do it, anyway?” he says. “I don’t know. To show them that I’m more than just a piece in their Games?” I say. He laughs a little, no doubt remembering the night before the Games last year. We were on the roof, neither of us able to sleep. Peeta had said something of the sort then, but I hadn’t understood what he meant. Now I do. (Catching Fire, Chapter 17)

Still mad that Peeta didn’t lose his leg in the movie.
And it’s not like it was just a throwaway detail in the books. He lost his leg (after getting it mangled like twice) and they talk about it during the interview. Katniss gets mad that no one told her.
In Catching Fire, it’s even more important. Obviously, having a metal and plastic prosthetic leg might make it a little difficult to swim, or to keep up with the others. In the movies, they say he’s having trouble because of the whole “your heart stopped” thing, but in the book, it was more about the fact he didn’t have enough time to get used to the new leg. I mean, a year isn’t a long time when you’ve had your leg your entire life and now you’re trying to live without it.
and like, I know that people talk about Katniss losing her hearing in her (left?) ear, but honestly it didn’t matter as much because the Capitol fixed it right away. It would’ve been fine to leave out if they had included Peeta’s leg.
Anyway, that was kind of long, but what makes Peeta’s character so cool is that he’s a disabled teenager who has a way with his words, and he survived an entire rebellion despite his injury.

Considering how much they like to place Peeta on this pedestal of perpetually perfect purity, I've noticed his fanbase goes out if it's way to be hostile. Whether it's offering a single nice word about Gale on a message board or even a Gale/Katniss dedicated video, Team Peeta always invades with their overblown disparaging comments. This would make more sense if it was the other way around, but how is it Team Gale usually opts not to engage or attack? Shouldn't Team Peeta be satisfied with their delectable forcefed 'victory'? What's with the consistent need to tear Gale down in order to prop Peeta up? The guys themselves did not interact with nearly such immature antagonism towards each other.
Is this perhaps overcompensation for the fact that people like Peeta are free to bake cookies and pick posies in the meadow because people like Gale are diligently safeguarding a whole new world?

Everlark on movies
or why I just can't hate the movies - Part 1
This post will be polemic, and I am sure everyone will disagree, but I came here to defend romance aspect on the movies.
But first, some important points:
-I do agree the books were totally better while the movies failed in insert romance organically in the storytelling.
-And yes, everlark community is right in be pissed of with the director. He really didn't get the purpose of Peeta and Katniss relationship and that's shows.
-The producers forced the Team Gale and Team Peeta thing to increase the engagement. More Gale and Katniss were their crimes.
That said, what I strongly disagree are following accusations:
-"The movies are Everthorne propaganda and made that ship more popular than the canon one."
-"Peeta and Katniss didn't have chemistry on the movies."
-"On the movies, Katniss was actually in love with Gale, Peeta was rebound."
So this post will cover this fist accusation.
The changes for the love triangule
First movie did insert hits about Gale have a crush on Katniss (the book made this too, but it was implied). In movies Gale is a decent friend (he was there with Prim wait for her, alike on canon), so he is shippable and this create a interesting conflict on the audience, cause her looks like a good match, right?
But then there is Peeta. This guy that happened to be genuinely kind, and was willing to let Katniss win. And in script was implied he did knows it was an act whole time. So in the end of story feels like the audience is strongly divided between two good men, adding the political mess, we do have an exciting cliffhanger.
Then second movies happens and all doubts go away! Again edition cut iconic lines from Peeta, but Josh killed it in all his scenes. Peeta's essential kindness was well portrayed, in my opinion, and made audience really care for him.
It was criminal that they didn't delve deeper into the everlark bed scenes and add new everthorne scenes (that no one asked for), but rewatching it I didn't see much emotions on those kisses (and thanks Liam for having the expressiveness of a door).
In the other hand, the everlark scenes during the games were EVERYTHING! All the drama that was missing in the first film came in full force in the second! The force field scene is so much more theatrical!
Tumblr media
And they made the beach kiss sweeter (and personally I love how heartwarming the scene was). I do remember applauding in theater (so... no chemistry my ass)
Tumblr media
In short, my reading of the film is that Peeta is not just a cute and passionate friend who Katniss is afraid of hurting by rejecting him. She's falling in love with him. The desperation, the devotion, all of this is perfectly translated in Jennefer's performance. I seriously don't get how someone can see their interactions on arena and think he is the third wheel (and thank you director for don't include Gale's sad face to ruin the moment here).
Tumblr media
Feral and in love (overdramatic? overreacted? Yes, but it follows the intensity of Katniss in canon). Will historians say that she is acting like this because of a friend?
Then the two last movies. They finally allowed show Gale being a asshole (I liked that change with calling Peeta a coward, they cut Gale's bullshit in Catching Fire, they had to put in some place). We still have to endure some Gale and Katniss scenes, but again, their ton are pale (basic soundtrack, no creative angles).
But what continues selling the ship is the adversity, the longing. Wherever Peeta appears Katniss just sees him! Gale stay on background or the camera forget him, he is just a desperate man looking at an amazing couple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You are excellent door Liam!
And all angst, the forbidden love thing make people root even more for Everlark! So no! The movies didnt' sell Everthone or this attempt backfired (or if you disagree, at least see Jennefer isn't on board).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion, yes the movies made little for the ship, but this little was enough to introduce people to this amazing franchise. The details, the performing, soundtrack, edition all came together to the tip of the iceberg of everlark.
