il sassetta (stefano di giovanni) -- "the journey of the magi" (ca. 1435)
"the magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the babe in the manger. they invented the art of giving christmas presents" … o. henry
"last we consider the time of their coming, the season of the year. it was no summer progress. a cold coming they had of it at this time of the year, just the worst time of the year to take a journey, and specially a long journey. the ways deep, the weather sharp, the days short … the very dead of winter" … lancelot andrewes
"oh the magi were the prophets
and they wandered through the desert
they saw the star above them
and they knew they'd find their way
through the valley of the shadow
with the hope of human kindness
they were strengthened by the vision
of a new and brighter day" … joe henry
"all this was a long time ago, i remember
and i would do it again, but set down
this set down
this: were we led all that way for
birth or death? there was a birth, certainly,
we had evidence and no doubt. i had seen birth and death,
but had thought they were different; this birth was
hard and bitter agony for us, like death, our death.
we returned to our places, these kingdoms
but no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation
with an alien people clutching their gods.
i should be glad of another death" … t.s. eliot
"death the halls with boughs of folly
fa la la la la, al al … al al" … al janik
"A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The ways deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter.”
And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
And running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty and charging high prices:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.
Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,
And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.
But there was no information, and so we continued
And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon
Finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory.
All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we led all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly,
We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.

Okay I’ve been reading a bunch of really amazing Mami/Homura centric stories.. and I’m kinda hooked on them right now. I want to write some one-shots around them… like post-series “Wraith Arc” stuff. I’ve brainstormed a few things
1. Mami works through her car trauma, with the help from Homura and Nagisa.
2. It’s 8 years later, Mami and Homura attend Nagisa’s high school graduation. Mami became her legal guardian when she turned 21. So by this point, Nagisa’s legal name is “Tomoe-Nagisa”
It’s 2 years after the beginning of the “Wraith Arc”. Homura is investigating a strange and dangerous occurrence by herself, which leads to her being caught up in an exploding building. She nearly makes it out as the building is destroyed. Mami finds out what she’s been doing a little too late, but she comes rushing to the crime scene. The area is taped off and police are questioning Homura.
Mami: “Oh thank goodness. Are you okay? Are you hurt? What happened?”
Homura: “Mami.. Mami, I’m alright. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what I was doing, I didn’t want you to worry.”
Mami: “Well, thanks a lot. Guess how worried I am now.”
Im going to be at SAKURACON!!! I am excited to see everyone who is going, and hoping to make new friends while I’m out there! :D if you happen to be going to Sak, gimme a shout!! My badge name for this year will be eldrigeons!!!
Wizeman the Wicked from the NiGHTS series...is already a witch in Puella Magi Madoka Magica?
Cause of Witchification: Once was a visitor much like any other who dreamed of Nightopia, he had been separated from his own ideya and was stranded in eternal darkness; doomed to never awaken again. With his sanity and humanity wearing away through the years, he had turned what remained of his Nightopia into a realm known as "Nightmare", and his fight for survival had devolved into a singular desire; to capture the ideya of any and all visitors in order to free himself from this world and manifest into reality; plunging mankind into an endless nightmare...
Things you should watch in the Autumn: A somewhat un-seasonal list by Alice
Majo No Tabitabi - This is a show about a witch who travels to various places and tries to avoid getting involved in the stories she encounters there. Don't watch this if sexual assault (mentioned) or gore (depicted) would be a problem for you, since episode 9 gets dark.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - Do not watch the remake. Watch the original film from 1920. It's on youtube, and only a bit over an hour long. This is a film from the waning days of Weimar expressionism (and which was roundly denounced by many Weimar expressionists as inauthentic), with beautiful painted sets and a drama that, despite its simple structure, remains compelling over a century later.
Haibane Renmei - This show is about death, coping, and moving on. It came out the year I was born, and uses a muted colour palette to great effect in establishing its tone. It's a melancholy show about girls with wings living in an isolated rural community with strange rituals. It's beautiful, and it *feels* like autumn in a way nothing else on this list does, even though it isn't really an "autumn" show in the way something like Over the Garden Wall is. It leaves you with questions.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - This one is kind of a religious text for some trans women. It's a story of love and tragedy between magical girls, and the movie Rebellion continues the story in a logical and yet controversial-at-the-time way. Another film has been announced recently, so this is a good time to get into Madoka, or rewatch it if you haven't seen it in a while.
So Ra No Wo To - Also sometimes written as Sora No Woto, and I'm told one or both is wrong. This is, like Haibane Renmei, in the genre of melancholy shows about girls living in rural communities, but with a bit less darkness and a bit more in the way of comedy, though it still knows when to be serious. Honestly, it's not as good as Haibane Renmei, so if you only watch one of the two, watch that. It was unfairly written off as a K-On clone when it first came out, however, and deserves more love than it gets. Noel Kannagi is autistic. It leaves you with questions, though not as many as Haibane Renmei does.
Hello, anime fans. I, Gabriel Ramos, have something sad to tell you. Last Thursday, my father passed away. Lately, my live-stream plans have gone bonkers since my mother enforced me to prepare for his upcoming funeral, interfering with my usual schedule. As a result, I have delayed Toon Time Theater by twelve and a half hours.
On the flipside, I still insist on live-streaming the series finale to the 2019 FRUITS BASKET series.
Next weekend, I hope I go back to my original live-streaming schedule following the funeral of my father. It's a shame he had to die after 72 years, and I was 28 when he died. Looks like all of the good times have come to an end.
