Theater is their first high school audition, for the fall play, multiple smaller plays directed by seniors, and having fun, getting cast in one of the biggest ones with the best directors they could've asked for, still anxious about being a good cast member but getting more confident again

Theater is rehearsals 3 times a week after school, the kid finding their footing in the cast, making friends with the older kids, being able to make suggestions or point things out that need fixing in the show

Theater is the kid being able to impress people, being able to memorize their lines, being able to be confident, being able to fix things, being able to say hi to their cast in the halls, at first just smiling at their director when they passed each other during passing period but then saying hi, even talking for a minute or two, the cast walking to the grocery store together at the start of a rehearsal for almost no reason, the kid being able to talk to their castmates, their friends, and not feel out of place, being excited for the bigger productions later in the year, not being worried about stage makeup because they know the older kids will be there, knowing that the older cast members and their directors will help them if they need it, knowing that they'll still be able to spend more time with them, knowing that they'll be so sad when the seniors graduate, but knowing that they still have almost all of the school year with them

Focusing

Acting

Acting, but with people that you trust. With people that even though you met them 2 months ago, that you know. You know their mannerisms, how they laugh, their sense of humor. You know that they're kind, you know that they care, you know that all of you love this. You all love this so, so much. You know that if you make a mistake on stage, that they'll improv and cover for you, and that you'd do the same for them. You know that no matter how anxious you are before the show, that they'll be someone with the same nerves and you can comfort each other.

And then the last show will end, and the audience will applaud. You will bow, with these people, these people that you may not have known a few months prior, but that so much trust has formed between. You've played improv games with these people, walked to the store with them, rehearsed over and over and over again with them, learned so much from them, taught and helped and been taught and helped, and it's over.

Until the next show, and the next, and the next year with more new freshmen, some of the kid's younger middle school friends now there too, until the year that the kid will direct their own show, as a senior, and try to be just as good a director as the ones they had their freshmen year.

And they will belong.

They will all belong.

#Finn's ocs #Finn's art #oc references #i wrote the descs while w the kids so hopefully they make sense. my attention was split #but anyway here in the tags I'll talk about the designs in relation to their kids lol #polaris is emulating thuban moreso than anyone else. her color scheme and outfit motifs are the same as his- they ARE his #her original outfit is clothes she took and diy'd into her own so she could go off into the world and well presumably look for him at first #the truth is she always wanted to see the world that's why she loved maps. in a way this was an excuse. in another way she was just lonely #but doesn't understand loneliness. also the fact that she's not his daughter by blood is part of that #bc of her actual parents (not as relevant character-wise) she sees all relationships as temporary and she has issues connecting #ananke i wanted to mostly look intimidating in a way that Bella really isn't #Bella puts on skull hairties and fishnets and stuff but she's very much. a cute softie trying to look edgy. she has pink twintails #she's so different from her mom in pretty much every way but she still did have that ideal of strength drilled into her #still her take on it is softer. she's the team leader now but she's really pretty lenient aside from the important No Killing rule ofc #w Rhea and Arche i had a bit of a flower theme. pussywillow (lol) means motherhood and buttercups mean childishness #so. mother and child #but rhea is interesting bc she's raising a whole different kid now that she's in a different place in life #if you do the math she had Saiph young. and it was alright for a while until his dad (again not as important) died #so she didn't have support or money. but she had a connection to the guild because his dad's old sword teacher is a member (hmm)#but she was too scared/ashamed to visit. she just left him his dad's old knife because that's all she had (THE KNIFE IS IMPORTANT)#arche is her kid with her second husband and her new beginning. this will cause some inner problems for Saiph when he meets them...#Poerava was kinda designed to have rich lady vibes because remember Al's family is practically nobility #but more importantly she's designed to look like a mom. with the low ponytail and tired eyes #the black pearl of her namesake as the centerpiece of her outfit too #again she's got the healthiest relationship with her kid here by a longshot #but i mean don't worry Al still got the daddy issues so he's not getting away unscathed #I already drew Taurus with the zodiac knights though so i didn't feel the need to reintroduce him #anyway Mira really has 0 connection to any family at all she was found as an orphaned baby after a monster attack #obviously she had parents but beyond town of origin it's unknown who so she has no connections to any sort of past parental figure #the guild is her one and only family and that's how she wants it. she wants to be with them forever the past doesn't matter

Adventures in Librarian-ing

This week I read And Tango Makes Three (a picture book about Central Park Zoo's gay penguins that raised an egg) to the Grade 1s and a class of Grade 3s.

In one class, when I got to the part where the zookeeper decides that Roy and Silo must be in love

one of the kids gave a delighted surprised laugh and went "Wait, are they gay? Are these gay penguins?"

"Yup!" I replied, "And they're real penguins too. This is a real story."

Cue the hubbub of kids chattering at the discovery that gay penguins are a thing.

"Gay penguins!" they marveled over and over.

One of the kids started getting visibly upset, "Guys, stop it! That's a bad word! Stop saying the G-word!"

"It's not a bad word," their classmates assured them, perplexed.

"Anyone can be gay," a classmate explained, clearly trying to be helpful.

Can I just for a minute complain as someone dyslexic about how when I was young everyone would always be like "well look up the spelling in the dictionary"?

Just now, I go to type a word and I spell it something like "erevicobly", which is obviously wrong, but... no idea

Well, I throw it in the search engine* and find out it's irrevocably (didn't spell it right there either, but got it close enough spellcheck could fix it)

Now you might notice something here, which is if I'd looked it up in the dictionary, I wouldn't have found it, no matter how long and hard I searched, because I'd be looking under "er" not "ir"

So do you see why that advice made me mad as hell as a kid, and I stand by my feelings today?

*literally one of the few ways search engines are a blessing is being a really great way to find spellings

#like my typing is great with very few mistakes; but my spelling while mostly alright these days isn't great #cause like... literal diagnosed dyslexia since I was a tiny kid #and let me tell you; no matter the reason; people will shit on you so much for poor spelling (no matter the age too)#fucker; we speak english; everything you said was a lie #there's not (consistent) rhyme or reason to it; and sounding it out is terrible advice cause we've all got fucking accents #and sometimes even if you don't the word is fucking worcestershire and you're fucked #actually gets me a bit heated how many good teachers I had who still acted like this #I actually have many strong opinions on linguistics and teaching despite not being a linguist or a teacher #give me descriptivism or give me death #prescriptivism can burn in hell where it belongs #and one thing that technology has 100% made better (at least for me as a dyslexic adult) is being able to spell well and quickly #it's an aid and an accommodation to me; we just don't look at it like that #I literally can't even spell accommodation; but you get to see the right word there #I have a vast vocabulary... I just can't fucking spell half of it #so prespellcheck you just kind of... had my writing look a lot worse and be a lot harder to parse #the main thing that helped with my spelling wasn't school or anything... it was everquest #you want to be able to type to people and be understood; there's no spellscheck or anything... you work to get it right quickly #mmos are a great way to teach typing if you don't have voice chat #similarly it's actually thanks to tumblr that I'm a quick typist; zero formal training with it and sucked through my teens #was a quick chicken scratch typist... pretty fast; but I pecked #through typing a lot of messages and asks to people on here and wanting to do it quickly I stumbled on something pretty...#close to what I think they teach; though I'm pretty sure there's gotta be some differences #it's nothing formal for one thing; it's all muscle memory; the fingers go where they go #but I can type pretty fast and accurately with my eyes closed #and it's just cause... I wanted to say things to people and say it quickly #eh... Baby fever so bad I've been thinking about the ideal number of kids for characters. What is wrong with me.

I think for freddy it would depend. he's the anxious type- so having just one kid would be a lot for him #I'd imagine his decision of having another baby would be impacted a lot by how the first kid went #if everything was mostly alright he'd be all for it- if shit went sideways he would forever dread having a second one #fred doesn't like children. so... he probably wouldn't have any if not tied to freddy. and even then would insist on only one #chica... I think she'd like two. I've heard headcanons that she has younger siblings #and I see her as the type to want to want that for her children too #although I also imagine she would want to have her kids later in life... mid 30s maybe #fox I also see as someone who wouldn't really want kids- especially since I headcanon him as trans #he doesn't want to be pregnant and he doesn't want to dedicate years of his life raising a child #when he already spent most of his childhood having to take care of meg since they didn't have any parents #maybe if his partner wanted to adopt. and they adopted a slightly older child instead of a baby. but that's a big maybe #bonnie... I'm not too sure honestly. I feel like he values his freedom and would want to enjoy his youth #but I don't think he'd be against having a kid or two (maybe even three)#also I find the idea of him having lots of kids funny because. bunny lol #so idk about him #golden meanwhile I fully believe would want a big family. he felt so alone growing up and he's so starved for love #so he dreams of having his own family with lots of kids living in a big house and being very happy <3 #I think he'd be happy with up to five kids lmao. although he understands if his partner would rather have less #he'd definitely want at least two though. he always thought having a sibling would've made his childhood less lonely and sad #so he wants that for his own babies :')#I was going to say more characters but now I'm embarrassed lol goodnight

I think I’m going crazy because I got to thinking about how during the pandemic we literally had people teaching us how to wash our fucking hands (like celebrities doing TikTok videos washing their hands wtf) because apparently some people didn’t know how to fucking wash their hands and it got me remembering about how you’re literally taught how to wash your hands as a kid like even in elementary school and preschool. They would even show you videos like there would actually be children TV shows about taking care of yourself and they would have this silly little song about washing your hands and brushing your teeth and I asked the venerable Three Year Old whether they had TV shows that taught them to brush their teeth and wash their hands and she said she didn’t know… which is like ok fair enough because you are literally only three years of age and you don’t really have object permanence or anything (not true btw) but I genuinely cannot remember if they teach stuff like this in Bluey or whatever the fuck. Do they teach this stuff in Spongebob I can’t remember. I’m going insane.
