Lee Gon
Tumblr media
Drama: The king - Eternal monarch
Status: Main character
Portrayed by: Lee Min-Ho
Yes, he is incredibly handsome, that's a fact. I wasn't a big fan at the beginning, he was cute but I didn't feel the connextion on the emotional level. He seemed to have kind of generic "main protagonist's personality". However, it got better later in the show. Lee Min-Ho showed some acting skills and I really rooted for king Lee Gon at the end. I think he really fits the role, he looks very regal :)

what i absolutely hate about (most) kdramas is that the guy always seems to be more into the girl than vice versa. i understand shyness and stereotypes, yk, but it’s so painful seeing the guy making efforts while the girl doesnt even pay him mind until he does it? and there’s countless examples, too
ofc there are exceptions but… annoying

Echoed Love
[ DO NOT REPOST, ALL ART & CONCEPTS WERE MADE BY ME ]
Illustration Time: 8hr 17min
Echo
Come to me in the silence of the night; Come in the speaking silence of a dream; Come with soft rounded cheeks and eyes as bright As sunlight on a stream; Come back in tears, O memory, hope, love of finished years. Oh dream how sweet, too sweet, too bitter sweet, Whose wakening should have been in Paradise, Where souls brimfull of love abide and meet; Where thirsting longing eyes Watch the slow door That opening, letting in, lets out no more. Yet come to me in dreams, that I may live My very life again tho’ cold in death: Come back to me in dreams, that I may give Pulse for pulse, breath for breath: Speak low, lean low, As long ago, my love, how long ago. Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
Happy Early Valentines Day!
Its been a full year since I drew this! How time flies yet love never changes! Take care of your loved ones and make sure the fellas in your life feel appreciated as well! It wouldn’t help to get him some flowers or a box of chocolate now and then! You don’t need a holiday for an excuse! Even boys deserve a bit of kindness and a smile!
( Recently obsessed with the K-Drama “The King: Eternal Monarch” on Netflix! Highly recommend if you like Romance, Parallel Dimension Shenanigans, and Murder Mystery’s! )
[ This is an Octonauts AU, in no way is this canon to the OG storyline. ]

Which is my favorite Kdrama network?
When I'm bored I like to list and categorize things. Today I've decided to discover, statistically, which Korean drama network is my favorite based on shows I've watched.
Including both shows I've completed and shows I've dropped bc in this case, the shows I don't like are relevant.
Using my ratings from MyDramaList :) which means however I felt the first time I finished watching a show, basically. Not including networks where I've only watched one show (e.g., Disney+, Wavve, Channel A).
JTBC:
Agency--Dropped
Beyond Evil--6
Itaewon Class--Dropped
My Country the New Age--10
Private Lives--Dropped
Reflection of You--Dropped
Sisyphus: The Myth--Dropped
I can't believe this network produced My Country the New Age when everything else I've watched by them has been a flop for me. Beyond Evil came the closest to breaking the curse but even then. Itaewon Class is one of my least favorite shows I've ever tried to watch; I've forgotten most of the details now but a bad taste lingers.
KBS:
White Christmas--10
Mad Dog--8
The King's Affection--10
River Where the Moon Rises--Dropped
Should I have given River Where the Moon Rises more of a chance? Bc apparently this network only makes bangers.
MBC:
Extraordinary You--7
Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung--9
The Veil--7
Idk what to say about this one. RHGH is pretty damn good but I think I would probs like it less watching it now than I did in 2019, newish to kdramas and ready to love anything. But it's a fave regardless, and Extraordinary You and The Veil are both fairly watchable. A serviceable network.
MBN:
Perfect Marriage Revenge--Dropped
Sponsor--Dropped
A network to watch a few episodes with the desire to see dogblood plots, and then leave.
Netflix:
Bloodhounds--8
My Holo Love--Dropped
Gyeongseong Creature--Dropped
Song of Bandits--8
The Silent Sea--7
It's Netflix. I don't know that they're ever going to make a real favorite for me but they're fairly competent.
OCN:
Save Me--8
Duel--Dropped
A Superior Day--Dropped
Apparently it takes Seo Ye-ji and Woo Do-hwan's powers combined to make me finish a show by this network. You'd think it would be easier bc they seem to enjoy angst and whump, but I think they pour it on a little too thick.
SBS:
Doctor Stranger--Dropped
Lovers of the Red Sky--8
Revenant--9
The King: Eternal Monarch--7
The Killing Vote--Dropped
Remember: War of the Son--Dropped
Honestly I might come back to at least one of these dropped shows. Their track record on plots is okay, but their actors are really good.
TVN:
100 Days My Prince--Dropped
Alchemy of Souls--9
Bad and Crazy--Dropped
Circle: Two Worlds Connected--9
Confession--6
Devil Judge--9
Eve--8
Flower of Evil--10
Hotel del Luna--Dropped
It's Okay to Not Be Okay--8
Mine--8
Mr. Sunshine--8
Our Blooming Youth--Dropped
Pandora: Beneath the Paradise--Dropped
Psychopath Diary--9
Tale of the Nine-Tailed--Dropped
Clearly I just start the most show by them. Do they make the most shows? I don't know. Good concepts and good cinematic quality on most of these shows, with just a few exceptions. Pretty solid network.
Viki:
Color Rush--8
I Picked Up a Star On the Road--6
Where Your Eyes Linger--8
You Make Me Dance--6
Mixed bag.
The takeaways:
I should probably watch more KBS. On my to-watch list, that translates to Youth of May, the Bridal Mask, Hwarang, the Bloody Heart, and Orange Marmalade. So mostly historical dramas, which is a pity bc apparently I also like their thrillers.
Really, though, my to-watch list at this point has a ton of SBS and MBC on it for some reason, at least with shows that have already come out. According to my stats so far, my odds are pretty mixed on liking them or not.
Somehow, one feels, I will actually end up watching more TVN instead... but that has yet to materialize. (except the one kdrama I'm currently watching is a TVN drama. so.)
Did I really learn anything? No. and on that note, good night.

LEE MIN HO IN KING: THE ETERNAL MONARCH
In the source link, there are #450 gifs of episodes 1-3 of the 2020 Netflix drama, King: The Eternal Monarch. Lee Min Ho was born in 1987 and is South Korean, so please cast him accordingly. All of the following gifs were made by me for roleplaying purposes. All I ask is that you don’t include in other gif hunts and don’t whitewash. You’re more than welcome to crop/edit however you like otherwise. A like and/or reblog would be greatly appreciated !!

The Mess Jang Gang Left Us With 2
Citizens of the Republic, Subjects of the Kingdom, Mages of Daeho, and Gentle Readers, it’s time to continue talking about--
The Mess Jang Gang Left Us With
Tumblr media
Jang Uk – The man who is not supposed to exist, who only does by the Alchemy of Souls
First – What? I mean, yes, Uk was conceived in a non-consensual encounter/assault [choose your terminology] while one body was occupied by a different soul than that of its owner. Biologically, Uk IS the son of Jang Gang. He carries his DNA, he is genetically his offspring.
I don’t think Jang Gang disputes this, I don’t even think that’s what he means to say when he says Uk is not his. In his mind Uk is not the son of his “spirit”, not the fulfillment of his actions.
But he is wrong.
Tumblr media
Yes, it was the King animating the body of Jang Gang that impregnated Do-Hwa (with sperm made by Jang Gang’s body). It is the fact it is the King’s immediate doing that brings about Uk’s conception, but it is Jang Gang’s greed that allowed such a perversion to happen. Whatever has powered Jang Gang to investigate and use the Alchemy of Souls has brought him to that place, has created Uk. Uk is a product of that.
Sidenote: I don’t know how much Koreans are into Arthurian Legend (The King: Eternal Monarch seems to indicate some of them might be), but Uk’s birth is very similar to that of Arthur’s (Uther gets Merlin to magically disguise him as Igraine’s husband, Gorlois, then sleeps with her and Arthur is the result who must be raised in secret)
Here, Uk is a manifestation of Jang Gang’s transgression.
Uk’s fate is set as much by the King in another man’s body as by Jang Gang himself.
Uk suffers because Jang Gang tries to avert the fate he believes he sees for him, by closing his gate of energy and getting out of Dodge, instead of staying, training Uk and maybe, just like challenging anyone who disputed Uk’s parentage to a mage duel. We’re in young Luke Skywalker territory, here. Hide him, prevent him from coming into contact with magic, perhaps he can be saved from the hand life has dealt him.
Jang Gang both pities and fears Uk. And it’s easier for him to leave town and the reminder of his transgression (Uk) than to stay and make amends for it.
Tumblr media
Jang Gang is not into the 12 Steps.
He makes no list of all persons he has harmed, and doesn’t become willing to make amends to them at all. Ultimately he dies “to take responsibility” we’re told, though this Western viewer really disagrees with that notion. Because dying solves nothing, heals nothing--other than ending your own earthly story, and leaving everyone else with a mess.
To clean up.
I mean, explain your treatment to your innocent wife. Were you resentful that she hadn’t noticed the man in the body coming in to her bedroom wasn’t you?
Did you fear the King did her harm? Or that he gave her pleasures beyond your mastery? For nine months you left her untouched, without any explanation. Why had you not cared to be concerned before making the Alchemy that the King might abuse or attack other women—those not related to you?
There are so many questions, two episodes will likely not answer them all—if any. I’m here for it, Netflix, if you decide to give it over: Season 3 as prequel.
I’d watch that show.

So I just finished up Little Women on Netflix and holy shit, the writing was amazing. And it was directed by the same person who did Vincenzo. Both the writer and director for it were women, so it hit different compared to a lot of shows. It was much more serious than some of the stuff we watch, but it was still really good and a proper drama. I highly suggest it for people who like crime dramas or more serious shows, and there wasn’t too much fluffy relationship stuff if you dislike that in kdramas.
I’ll definitely be adding it to the list to watch with Alexis! I told her some of the stuff that happened in just the first three or four episodes and she was like, “That seems like a wild ride!” And we liked the three sisters from other shows (it had the lead from King Eternal Monarch, Shopaholic Louis/100 Days My Prince, and one of the students from All Of Us Are Dead).

Do you have a list of your favorite K Dramas? We have similar taste and I want to get into K Drama.
Oooh thank you for letting me talk about kdramas! :D
So you can find my MyDramaList list here so you can get an idea of my favourites. I love MyDramaList for finding dramas to watch, seeing what people post in the forums and keeping a track of my own watching. (I really like lists and having things neatly categorised!)
Here are some of my top favourites by genre.
Romantic Comedy (the genre I watch the most of)
Romance is a Bonus Book (Netflix)
Friends to lovers, older woman/younger man, very gentle and all about books. One of the first I watched, but it's left an impression. Has some really lyrical language even in translation.
2. What's Wrong With Secretary Kim (Viki)/Her Private Life (Netflix)
Putting these together because they both star Park Min Young and they're kind of similar. Often very funny, opposites attract, workplace romcoms, childhood backstory. Secretary Kim is about a 29 year old secretary who quits working for a demanding boss in order to have a life and date and he realises he can't do without her. Her Private Life is about a competent art gallery director with a secret life as a kpop fangirl. The male lead in this is probably the best of any drama.
3. Dali and the Cocky Prince (Netflix)
A bit up and down because terrible things just keep happening to the heroine so it gets you down a bit but also very funny and an absolutely winning main couple. About a woman who inherits a debt ridden art gallery and the unsophisticated, money-obsessed man she is in debt to. Top soundtrack alert!
4. Because This Is My First Life (Netflix)
Down on her luck woman and solitary man get married in order to share a flat. You won't believe what happens next! I loved it because it was very gentle and a really interesting exploration of three very different women dealing with being youngish adults in the modern world. Really touched me behind the tropes it uses as a springboard.
5. A Business Proposal (Netflix)
Absolutely hilarious and brilliant and somehow still heartwarming but I'm putting it last because it sort of satirises and deconstructs all the tropes in a loving way so watch a few other dramas first to appreciate it! Fake dating to the max.
Fantasy/Historical
Alchemy of Souls Part 1 and 2 (Netflix)
Magical, beautiful, epic, romantic... I love this show so much. In a fictional historical Korea, mages have the ability to shift their souls into a different body, a forbidden art. A magical assassin bent on revenge finds herself in the weak body of the servant of a magic student who has been banned from training. It gets much more complicated. IDK why anyone would bother with things like RoP and HotD when this is out there. Top soundtrack alert!
2. Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung (Netflix)
About the historians at the Joseon court who have to record everything that takes place neutrally. Takes the idea that the court decides to admit female historians and what happens then. A sweet romance between a naive prince and a feisty female historian but tbh the interest is in the historical dilemmas and political intrigue here, at least for me.
3. The King: Eternal Monarch (Netflix)
A hot mess of a show but also really cool and I looked forward to it every week and got really invested. All about parallel universes in which there is still a Kingdom of Corea. Romance between a cop in "our" Korea and the King of Corea. Lots of plotting and scheming and things that don't really make much sense but it's beautiful and epic and I really loved the world building. Top soundtrack alert!
4. My Roommate is a Gumiho (Netflix)
Really a romcom in which a history student has a meet-cute with a gumiho (legendary nine tailed fox) and have to share a house together because Reasons and also he's posing as her very cute history professor. It's honestly just fun and an easy watch and I really enjoyed it.
Thriller/Spy
Vincenzo (Netflix)
The best of the best. Genre-busting comedy-thriller-crime-romance-slapstick-found family emotional journey of a show. About a Korean mafioso returned from Italy to get his hidden gold back, except it's buried under a block of flats under threat from evil developers. He butts heads with the lawyer working for the residents of the block. It's crazy good fun that doesn't always make 100% sense but who cares when something is as entertaining as this is?! Good for those moments when you wish you could literally murder capitalists and get away with it. Top soundtrack alert!
2. Healer (Netflix)
Part romance part thriller about a genius hacker/mercenary who runs across a girl trying to make it as a reporter and who ends up investigating the same thing as him and it all turns out to be more personal than expected. Love the lead actors and it's a really good mix of spy/thriller and romance. Plot makes sense too!
3. Terius Behind Me/My Secret Terius (Viki)
A spy in hiding from the government takes a cover as the babysitter to a single mum's twins and she ends up getting roped into the spy capers along with her local "mum's network". Perfect for light-hearted adventuresome frolics with gadgets. The only drawback is you really want a S02 at the end and they never made one. :(
Shout-out to some really fun Chinese and Taiwanese dramas that I enjoyed. They have a different flavour but you can see what my top rated ones are on MyDramaList.
Happy watching! :)
