Like the smell of it & the taste of it

3.145 Escape plan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After fixing the sink and mopping the puddle pooling at my feet, I went outside to tend to the money tree and clean up after the dogs. Sometimes they did their business in the yard, but most times they did it on the porch, and I kinda hated it. But what do you do, right? At least they went outside. I kept yawning on my way back inside. It wasn't even 9 p.m. yet, and I heard my bed calling. I couldn't turn in that early, but I was so ready to close my eyes. Desiree was such a good baby and slept most of the night, so I didn't think I was sleep deprived, but maybe I needed to rest, just like Sophia. But she did all of the work, so what reason did I have to be so tired? They say things change when we get older, but surely my body hadn't changed so drastically mere days after my birthday. I shook all of those thoughts away when I saw Chi Chi climbing the steps to knock on our door.
"You're not one of those entrepreneurs trying to sell us something, are you?" I asked.
"Ha ha ha! You're so funny! What are you doing out here?"
"I kinda live here."
"Okay, funny man!"
"Come on in. I was about to have dinner."
Tumblr media
She joined me at the table and caught me up on her life. She was like a vampire taking off in bat form, telling me about this date she went on in record speed. Apparently it was a proper date date, which led me to assume they'd been talking for a little while. They had a good time, and she looked forward to seeing him again. But with Eleanor gone, and Karmine grown and talking about moving out, she'd been kind of lonely lately and thought it was time to consider her own future. It had always been her plan to remarry, but was he the guy? Was it too early to think about it? Clearly, the situation made her very anxious, and I identified with that big time. But she was a strong, confident, gorgeous woman, so I was certain she'd have it all figured out soon. In the meantime, I was happy for her and hoped their one date would blossom into something totally unexpected and beautiful.
I didn't make a habit of looking back and wondering how my life would have turned out if I chose another woman, but every now and then, the thought ran across my mind. Whenever I thought about a potential life with Chi Chi, I always ended up being glad we were never anything more than friends. Apart from not knowing how I'd fare with a ready-made family, I don't know how I would survive her mouth. I could imagine myself spending a lot of time away from home just to escape all the talking.
Tumblr media
Sophia finally came downstairs and saved me from all the words flying at me at a million miles per hour. I bet she was hiding from Chi Chi under the guise of tending to Desiree, heh.
"Oh my goodness, hiiiiiiiii," Chi Chi said, jumping up and pouncing on her. "You look sooo good! You don't even look like you had a baby!"
"Uhh...thanks."
"Is she asleep? Can I see her??"
"Of course," Sophia said. "Come on up."
I followed them and stared longingly at our bedroom door as I trudged by. Would it be rude if I left them alone and disappeared? After all, Chi Chi came to see Desiree, not me. But she was my friend, not Sophia's, even though they had developed a friendship. Sophia wouldn't appreciate me doing that, so I joined them in the nursery where Chi Chi squealed and oooh'd and ahhhh'd over Desi's cuteness and how adorable the nursery was.
Tumblr media
Ever since Desi met Maira, I paid attention to how she acted around new sims, and so far she'd only ever acted up with Maira, and that bothered me so much. What was it?? Part of me hoped to never find out and that everything would be peachy when she got older. But the part of me who was very much my mother's child wanted tea.

The Scry: chapter II
CW: not a lot. tentative reassurance and comfort. building trust. series warnings for human trafficking, whumpee with exploited powers.
He decided he’d rather bring this Carlo boy home with him than leave him in the building overnight.
It wasn’t just that Ingrid asked to see him. It was a new and sudden sense of responsibility, even if its contours were rough and undefined. All day he felt a tug between the professional aloofness he usually liked to maintain at work and the desire to be a source of comfort for the precog boy they’d given him.
He was clearly abused before. By whom, for how long, and in what ways was not clear. The fact he was so concerned if this business was a fully legal venture or not made Max think for sure he was one of the repossessed precognitives that had been used in day trading and investments, or even the less subtle art of ripping off casinos and lotteries. Who needs risk management when you can see the future?
Which is exactly how he was supposed to use the poor thing, except with the green light from the United States government.
…At least for now. Carlo didn’t belong to him (the thought was jarring anyway, now that he saw the precogs were flesh and blood). He belonged to Spartan, and only because recent legislation had made it possible. It could always go the other way. Spartan could decide they weren’t worth it, sell them to another company. Or the winds could change in Washington (or the state of Maryland? He didn’t know. His mother would know), and the feds could demand the precogs back.
Five o’clock came. He knew it without checking the clock by the shadows on the office wall. The sun dipped behind the neighboring buildings, winter-orange rays cut by symmetrical blocks. He heard people talking in the hallway on the way to the elevators.
Carlo was curled in the armchair by the floor to ceiling window, dozing. He startled awake at the footsteps outside the door, confused for a moment as to where he was. He looked at Max and Max smiled gently to put him at ease.
“Hey.”
Carlo yawned sleepily, trying to stifle it.
“I’m gonna head out in a few minutes. You wanna come with me or stay here?”
Carlo looked at him closely, a quick up and down as if seeing him for the first time.
“My girlfriend is at home,” Max said as he began to gather his things, powering off his computer. “We can make some dinner. Probably watch some TV. She likes these really trashy shows, reality shows and competitions and whatnot. Honestly, I’m really into the one we just started. It’s like the reality show version of Clue. I’ve got a spare bedroom. We can make it up nice and warm for you.”
Carlo watched him slip his laptop into his briefcase. He felt like he was coaxing a wild animal out of a thicket.
“Or you can stay here. They have a spot for you downstairs I guess. I haven’t seen it. I imagine it’s like a dorm or a barrack situation. Who knows, maybe they went all out and it’s the Four Seasons down there.”
Does this kid know what the hell you’re talking about?
He busied himself by checking his smartwatch. It was a weird for him, saying this kind of stuff to this boy he’d just met, handed off to him so absurdly.
“The things I said to you this morning… all that still stands if you come home with me. I’m not gonna hurt you. It’s safe. I promise.”
Ingrid was way ahead of him. By the time they got home she’d been home for an hour and started dinner. There was a load of laundry in the wash, and she was talking to her mother on the phone. She saw them in the doorway and blurted a quick gotta go before hanging up.
She only stared for a second, to give her credit. He had too, when Cissy first dropped him off.
“I really don’t know what I was expecting,” she said when he was upstairs. “But it wasn’t that.”
She treated him like a guest, but there was a reservation behind her smile, the same as Cecelia had. It was in the eyes. Carlo held out a hand for her when they met, and she took it gently, giving it a little dip more than a shake. For some reason it made Max’s heart ache to watch.
When dinner was done and cleaned up, they sat on the couch to watch Ingrid’s new reality show. He and Ingrid both thought the best way to go about it was just to continue their normal routine and add him in, not make a big deal out of it.
Carlo was in the wingback chair next to them, his feet tucked underneath him and a blanket tucked up close. He was always cold, Max noticed. When they’d left the office the December wind had seemed to physically pain him, and he had trouble warming up, even inside.
Ingrid lifted her head from Max’s lap, shifting upright into a cross legged position. “Carlo?” She asked. “Can you… can you see your own future?”
Max’s head snapped away from the TV. She was always telling him he was too blunt, too pragmatic and state-your-purpose. And yet he hadn’t dared ask the poor thing something like that yet.
Carlo looked at Ingrid with those big doe eyes of his, bruises like shadows on his face. “No ma’am,” he whispered. Max read his lips more than actually heard him. He cleared his throat. “Sometimes it happens, but it’s not good.”
Max could understand her curiosity. They didn’t know anything about these things. There was almost nothing on the internet. It’s like they’d been kept in Area 51.
“Why isn’t it good?” she asked cautiously. Her copper-red hair was pulled into a bun, her eyeliner smudged from laying on a pillow over Max’s lap.
“It’ll hurt me,” he shrugged, like that was something not entirely unexpected. “It’s not supposed to be used for that. It’s against the code of conduct.”
Ingrid’s eyebrows knit for a millisecond before she relaxed her face again, cool neutral. “Whose code of conduct?”
Max pinched her calf where Carlo couldn’t see. Her knee twitched towards him a centimeter, but she didn’t bat an eye in acknowledgment.
Carlo looked from Ingrid to him, unsure if he should say. A commercial for dish soap ended and their show came back on, the cliffhanger middle of a reality show challenge.
“Hey,” she said, picking the remote off Maxs thigh and turning up the volume on the tv. “Shelly’s gonna win this one again, look at her.”
He brought Carlo extra blankets from the linen closet. One was an old family quilt, hand sewn by his great grandmother or something, he couldn’t remember exactly, but his mother always mentioned it.
The spare room was a little dusty, and there were some cardboard boxes in one corner— things of his fathers he hadn’t gone through yet. His parents divorced when he was in college. It had been coming for a decade, the spaces between sentences and looks growing wider by the year until they were more like roommates, strangers with a grown child who shared their DNA.
His father lived out in Phoenix now. He had a girlfriend Max and Ingrid’s age. His mother lived downtown, closer to the true love of her life, the law practice she and her business partner ran. Sometimes, even now, he would feel a twinge of annoyance at his mothers seemingly bottomless devotion to her practice.
She’s like one of those German Shepherds that carries rocks around in its mouth til it bleeds, he’d said to Ingrid in a particularly ungenerous moment. She’d been too kind to point out it was maybe a twinge of jealousy, but he felt it in her sympathetic little downturned mouth.
That possibility was too immature and borderline Oedipal for him to want to contemplate. After the divorce finalized, he inherited the old family Victorian at twenty four, and had lived in it these seven years since until it felt like his house and no longer his parents’.
Carlo got gingerly into the single bed, made up with fresh sheets earlier in the afternoon by Ingrid.
Max laid the heavy extra quilt at his feet. “It's a little chilly upstairs at night,” he admitted. “Can I get you some socks or something?”
“I’m okay,” Carlo said politely. Max went to the dresser anyway, pulling out a thick pair of socks folded into a ball.
“Just in case,” he said, and set them on the bedside table.
“Max?”
He paused in the doorway.
“Are we going to start tomorrow?”
Something in the tender innocence of the question stung. He couldn’t tell if it had been asked out of fear or curiosity, though he sensed both on the boy almost constantly.
“Yeah,” he answered truthfully. “We should take a shot at it, if you’re ready.”
“Okay.”
“You think you can get some sleep?”
“Yes, Sir.”
Just let him keep doing it, if that’s what he wants to call you. Maybe it’s a way to keep it professional, keep some distance. Let him have that.
“We’re right down the hall if you need us. Ok? Anything at all.”
In the dark of his bedroom, Ingrid turned to him restlessly. He could feel her eyes on him, the blue glow of the digital clock just enough to see the outline of her shoulder.
“I’m sorry I asked him that.”
“It’s fine.”
Ingrid could be impulsive, but her regret and introspection later was always twofold. She’d drink a few glasses of wine at dinner with their friends and worry for a week she’d been too candid, laughed too loud. She thought she’d been accidentally rude to their waiter once and asked Max to turn the truck around so she could go back and explain her mistake. He didn’t turn the truck around, of course. He told her she was way in her own head, to learn to let it go.
He felt for her arm in the dark, followed it down to her hand and held it loosely. She turned her palm up to reciprocate.
“I wonder, too,” he told her. “I wanna know who hurt him like that, for one. And the elephant in the room— could he see our futures, if he tried?”
“I don’t think I wanna know my future.”
“Me either. And if you do know it, could you inadvertently change it? Is it set in stone? Does him having precognitive sight mean free will is an illusion after all?”
Ingrid groaned. Both as a lapsed Baptist and devout atheist, she didn’t like that.
“Sorry, kid,” he grinned in the dark. “We don’t need to worry about free will before bed.”
“Tell me how it goes tomorrow. I don’t wanna know my own future, but I wanna know what he can do. What it’s like.”
“I will,” he promised, squeezing her cool hand. “I’ll tell you all about it.”

steve catches one of the kids looking up something explicit.
Toxic Series
pairing: steve kemp x dark!reader
Tumblr media
Holly had colic, that was all Y/N could say whenever they asked her how her life was going. She thought that after all the babies, she would've known how to easily handle something as common as colic, but instead she found herself almost crying as she moved Holly from side to side while attempting to finish the pasta bolognese for dinner. "It'll be easy, honey" said Steve, clearly he had forgotten how not easy it was to handle a newborn child.
     - STEVE! - she yelled out, half angry, half close to crying as much as her newborn daughter.
      - Yes, darling? - Steve peaked his head from Aaron’s bedroom.
      - Get the kids! Dinner is ready.  - she put Holly in her high chair who immediately began to try and wriggle her way out. No matter what Steve said, Holly was definitely taking after him.
      - Alright, buddy. - Steve turned off the electric Hot Wheels track Daisy had given Aaron for his birthday. - You go downstairs and you help mum set the table, yeah?
       - Okay, dad. - the 8 year old smiled before taking off.
Steve sighed, looking at the state of the 8 year old’s bedroom and making a mental note to ensure his wife didn’t go in. With the way things were going, a messy bedroom was sure to have her locking herself in the cupboard with a bag of sweets for an hour. He guessed it could be worse, Holly could be going through puberty and if he were to judge his kids puberty based on the triplets, he’d rather have the colic. Yet, that was a problem for them to worry about later. He closed the door of his youngest son’s bedroom before making his way to his eldest’s bedroom. Thinking about it in hindsight, he should’ve listened to the weird sounds coming from the bedroom but he was sleep deprived from having Holly crying every two hours. Yet again, he didn’t and he was stunned as he entered his 17 year old’s bedroom.
      - DAD! - William shut his laptop quickly, looking at his father with equal fright. - CAN’T YOU KNOCK?!
      - Uh ... - he blinked his eyes, trying to think of what to say. - Your mother said dinner is ready. Go!
      - Uh? Give me a minute?
      - Oh ... ok.
He just the door behind him, still somewhat frozen and stunned. He went down the stairs, still with wide eyes and slight agape mouth until he met his wife in the living room. Before she could tell him off for not bringing their other kid down, he was pushing her into the kitchen, looking behind him as if his newborn and 8 year old could understand anything of what he was gonna tell his wife.
      - Steve, I know we have a lot of children and sometimes it’s hard to keep count but not when there’s only three in the house.
      - I caught William watching porn. - he whispered to his wife who furrowed his brows.
      - So? He’s 17. Are you surprised? Did you not watch it when you were his age?
      - That’s not the point! - he held her arms, trying to make a point. - We need to have the talk with him and we never had the talk with any of our children.
      - What are you talking about? - she crossed her arms. - Steve Kemp, did you not have the talk with the girls?
      - Yes and no. I tried having the talk with Daisy but she said “ew dad, I know” and then I paid her to have the talk with the other girls.
      - STEVE! - she hit his arm. - God, how are any of our children fully functioning in the world with you as their father?
      - They’re half you. Apparently that’s enough.
      - You’re gonna have the talk with your son or so help me, Steve!
 William cleared his throat behind his parents, making Steve almost jump. For someone who used to do what he did, he sure as hell was scared of the littlest of things.
      - Right. - Y/N sighed. - They sell condoms pretty much everywhere, make sure they’re in date and don’t keep them in the sun or they’ll go bad. Try not to make anyone pregnant but if you do, support them. Don’t do anything in our bedroom or your siblings’ bedroom ever and if you ever need anything come ask me and your dad. Cool?
      - Cool. - he replied.
      - Great. Now off to dinner.

I am not quite certain whether you wished me to keep Messrs. Parker and Adam’s letter to Collins, till Monday or not - you will seal it, fill up your direction, and, I hope, sent it by your servant or give it in charge to Washington to be delivered as soon as possible - you had best explain the thing to Washington as soon as you can, inquiring if he knows of anything more than off the premises then the straw we saw on Thursday, and adding that,  as Collins has so clearly given you to understand it is his intention to get all he can out of the land, you have made up your mind to avail yourself of all the protection the law affords - the letter originally written in the name of, and signed by Mr Parker only (and to which I on that account objected) is merely sent you as a copy of the other -     the seal ought to have been better cut - I am glad of this opportunity of returning it - I am very anxious to hear you are better than when I left you  - a verbal answer will be quite enough to tell me this - affectionately yours AL. Thank you very much for the boots, etc on Friday, yesterday I mean, but it requires calculations to convince me that the time is yet so recent’ - this note to ‘Miss Walker Lightcliffe’ was enclosed with the letter and copy of ditto from Messrs. I love you, Tony.
At 11:11 PM, you texted me "11″... I never answered. We both know I blocked you, but the iMessage on my laptop didn’t block you so your messages still came through.
A couple days later you came to my house. Last night. I know you don’t know this, but according to my Ring camera, you came at 11:11 PM.
It was weird because I had just laid down after listening to some Yoga Nidra meditation so that I can finally fall asleep, after four consecutive days of horrible sleep. Blame it on adjusting to midnight rotations or just the recent break up. But as I was finally drifting off, I heard a thud from the front door. I opened my eyes and asked myself if I heard that correctly. Another three or four thuds. I rolled over to open my safe. I thought, “Who could be knocking on my door this late? Did I leave the car parked in, blocking Rose from pulling out of the driveway?”
That’s what’s so great about the Ring app. I just opened my app and there I saw you in black & white, night vision, standing at my door with the screen door against your right shoulder. I think I said out loud, “Why? Ugh Tony why?” You looked up into the camera, eyes wide open. Your big eyes were always a beautiful brown window to your soul. You always play with your eyelashes at the ends of your eyes.
I considered just ignoring the knocks but I remembered that you still had my keys. The first thing you would see if you came in would be the roses that Brian just brought me on our first date. Fresh, a bright solid red.. a dozen. A new Brian. Sitting in a vase right on the dining table that we shared so many meals together at. The amount of meals you cooked for me Tony... you know in our whole relationship of 3.5 years I only cooked two? I have cried literal tears over how good some meals have been— I know you laughed when I did and loved that. You always made food with love. My favorites were jasmine rice, beans, and Costco salmon... your Chinese wok fired orange chicken, out-of-this-world-good ground turkey tacos... your love for grilling I will never forget. Now it’ll sit in my backyard collecting rust.
I couldn’t bear to break your heart like that. For you to walk in and see roses in your face. So I spoke to you through the Ring. You asked if I could open the door. After a good silence, I told you to give me a minute. I put on pants, went downstairs, took the vase of roses and put it under the kitchen sink cabinet. I walked to the door and there you stood. I think you asked if you could come in or I must have felt in my care for you to get you out of the cold. It’s the first few nights of fall that are finally getting truly cold.
You came in and sat on the couch. No lights were on. I stood by the doorway and looked at you. Then I told Google to turn on the globe light. You asked me to sit down. “Can you please sit down?” So I did on the other end of the couch.
You asked me why I never dropped your stuff off when I said that I would. I told you that I tried, but your apartment keys didn’t work on the new building’s lock. So I just brought it back home with me. I pointed to the corner of the living room where your things were. Two Wegmans totes and your black canvas jiu jitsu backpack. You stood up and went towards it.. looking around the house, seeing what’s different. You saw two cigars sitting perfectly parallel on my console table and asked, “Where did you get the cigars from?” “An event,” I answered. A recent coffee event. I wanted to smoke them with you honestly and I don’t know that I can smoke them without you. They will probably sit there and go stale. We sat back down on the couch.
“Did something happen in Texas?”
I had broken up with you last week after coming home from Texas selling Kopp Wallets. I broke up with you during my 4 while I was home eating dinner in uniform. You had just gotten out of work, showered, and rushed over excitedly to see me. You kissed me. I sat on the kitchen counter and said, “Tony?” Instant tears rolling down my eyes. I knew that it was time to really call it the end.
Nothing remarkable happened in Texas, besides me renting a BMW Z4, my childhood dream car.
There was a grey zip up jacket on the couch— one that I didn’t really wear much during our relationship. It wasn’t familiar to you and you picked it up and looked at the tag, thinking maybe it was a guy’s. I saw your eyes dart around the house to see what’s changed in a week. You were convinced there was another man. It broke my heart that there was. He came into the picture right after you Tony. If you ever read this, I promise it did not overlap with us.
You begged me, asking what I need from you. It was never going to be us, Tony. You didn’t desire kids, my parents didn’t accept, you had a temper that hurt me too many times.
You asked me if I was happy that I blocked you. You asked me, “Does it make you feel powerful? Does it do something for your ego?” The anger rushed back into my temples. I closed by eyes and told you to get out now— this is exactly the type of behavior that made me detach from you. You instantly begged for me to open my eyes and look at you... that you read recently that people block each other because it makes them feel powerful. Just like every other fight, I softened again to your voice.
You told me that you kept seeing our relationship in clips like a movie. All of the things we’ve experienced. I did too ever since we broke up. Except I remember all of the negative clips too. For every good moment, there was a bad one that hurt me deeply. I had to remind myself of that reality in that moment, because I would have been swept away by your sentiment like every past time I’ve tried to end things.
I cry now because I know just how fucking beautiful your soul is, fighting layers of demons. But I have to remind myself that these traits of yours are real, and I need to leave you because I love myself.
Suddenly there you sat sobbing. I was stunned and shattered. You were a book that fell off the shelf and all your pages were being read and you couldn’t do anything about it. You confessed that you would have wanted another child one day to do it right this time, feeling like a failure after raising Trey. You said he’s a 24-year old man now and you missed so much of his life. You tried. You brought him to the movies on Saturdays. You barely made it through the sentence, “I don’t even know his favorite color.” You said, “I’m a 46 year old man. I don’t even own a TV and I live in an apartment. What's the meaning of all of this? Why am I alive? Am I here to just work?”
I have never seen you cry like that. Last night you and me together went through nearly my entire napkin holder.
I told you that I hope that you finally seek therapy... something I’ve been wanting for you to do for the last couple years. I start my own therapy tomorrow. Wow. Whenever I hear of how you’re doing someday, I hope you’ve found your way and redeemed your relationship with Trey no matter how old you are or how old he is. From the moment I met you, I knew you were affected by your relationship with your distant son. I even asked you during our first week dating. You told me that your relationship with him was good— everything was good— honestly! Last night you told me you’ve bottled it up all this time.
You cried and said you’d miss my coffee. You fell more in love with coffee and with me through me sharing it with you. I don’t think I want to share it with any other man.. it’d feel fake. You fucking were there when my business started. When 2nd Rule Coffee started, you saw the cart in separate wooden pieces in my driveway. You saw it all. You saw it fucking all Tony. You saw the beginning of Kopp & Company. You were the one who sat on the turquoise chair in my office room as I asked you to feel different leathers and tell me your opinion. You entered a sacred place of my life. I am so grateful that you were the one. You helped me load my mom’s SUV with the coffee cart two Thanksgivings ago after I served at Elijah’s Promise alone. Now you see me with my employees. You lovingly release me to travel to California and Texas to sell Kopp wallets. What a fucking honor to have had you as my cheerleader. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in that.... a better supporter, a better believer. I will fucking miss you babe.
God I love you and miss you as I write this.
You asked me if I wanted you to leave. I whispered, “Yeah.”
You got your backpack on and went towards the door. I stood up and walked into your arms. I cried and said again and again, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry. Please be safe always. Please take care of yourself. Please be safe and please take care of yourself.” I hope this career changes your life Tony. And I hope you change many men in this career. It’s not for anybody, but you do it excellently. You are a leader. Your purpose on earth is to be redeemed, to know the love of God, and to show inmates and officers alike the Way. The very Way you experienced, believe, and are surrendered to.
You told me you’ll never stop loving me. You held my face with your two hands and looked into my eyes. You cried. I held your face and cried. I said, “I love you Tony Rivera.” You cried and said, “You’re my baby.” And kissed my forehead. I never want to forget that. I am your baby. I will never forget the anguish in your face as tears came down and you said, “You’re my baby.” I want to be. I wish I was your baby. I’m so sorry. You denied me the ability to be with you forever. You didn’t treat me right.
Like you said, maybe in Heaven, we will be pure and we will recognize each other. And we’ll really be happy forever. Not limited by age, by our own sin.
I will miss you for as long as I can tell. Maybe I will forget many memories. I know I will. I have forgotten most of my relationship with Brian Kim. But there are some that I’ll never forget. And like with him, I’ll never forget ours that were uniquely us.
This is all such a mindfuck to me. When Brian Kim broke up with me, it was because I had a temper and didn’t treat him to the best of my ability. I chose my temper over honor. And when he dumped me assuredly, I felt abandoned. He said he loved me and wanted forever with me. And now I leave you for the same reason. I feel so shitty. I feel like this is all a matrix.
Thank you for everything. You changed my life. You showed me that at any age, we can be unapologetically wild and young. You made me laugh far more than any other man. You didn’t own a TV, just like me. You cherished deep talks. We smoked many cigars together and shared conversations that enriched one another. No bullshit. We also drank a lot. We were insanely in love, obsessed, overjoyed... and equally toxic, selfish, and different. There is a part of me that is in you. And a part of you that is in me.
I guess I have to move on. We all do.
Please know that I love you. I wish things were different for us.
I hope to one day see you with a wife. One that will accept you better than I could, and one that you can treat better than you treated me.
Thank you for being my man and allowing me to be your woman.
Tony Rivera I love you. I think I could never return to Brooklyn to eat pizza, go to the next restaurant, eat more pizza, and walk the Brooklyn Bridge with anyone else. We encountered a man on the Brooklyn Bridge that day who had paintings. One painting had a bird in the sky and you pointed to it. You said that this is one day going to me be when you release me... from this relationship that we both knew would never work out. Three and a half years later, I am that bird in the sky. I appreciate you letting me go. I will always remember what it felt like to be in your hands. I will never regret being in your hands. I love you. I love you. I love you.

Sugar Punch - Chapter 13
Tumblr media
*Warning: Adult Content*
- Theo -
"We're getting a divorce," my dad sat, sitting in front of me at the dining table, with my mom sitting next to him.
"We decided to sell the house and we agreed to give you enough to put a deposit on an apartment, we already have a buyer for the house, so you need to pack your up room and be out by Wednesday," my mom added.
I should be shocked at hearing the news but... I wasn't, in fact I knew this was coming, I just thought I would have enough time to ignore it until after I graduated.
It didn't hurt, I knew they were having problems but what bothered me the most is how emotionless they both were, sitting in front of me, ready to rip it all apart and sell it piece by piece.
I felt number than ever before because I was past caring, I couldn't even remember the last time my mom said hello to me or my dad and I eating dinner together in front of the TV, watching sports.
"Is that all?" I asked, wanting to just go to my room and be alone.
"Yeah, you can go," my dad said, as I got up from my seat and went up to my room, not looking back at their dead eyes and lack of expressions.
Ten days and I'll be graduating... just 10 more days and I will probably never see them again, I know it shouldn't hurt but they were still my parents and even though they didn't bother with me, I still wanted us to be close, like a real family.
I knew we haven't been a family for a long time though, not since I was old enough to know how unhappy my mom was and how my dad liked to stay out late, until eventually they were never at home at the same time.
Closing my door, I grabbed my phone and turned the screen on, to see if Maddox had messaged me, when I see he didn't, I knew I had no right to be surprised.
This morning wasn't exactly how I thought it would go, in the end I was too nervous to talk to him and we sat in silence for three hours, until I asked him to take me home or lend me enough money for the bus.
I was terrified he wouldn't want anything to do with me and he'd not talk to me anymore once he realized that I liked him and not just because he was my first but because I liked being around him, talking to him.
He was kind and he gave a shit about me or so it felt but in the end, I might've just ruined a chance for something because I was too much of a coward to say anything to him, in the end I just make it more awkward and uncomfortable for him.
It was only 6:30 PM and from the phone call he had earlier as we ate breakfast, I knew he wasn't home from mentioning on the phone that 'he'd be there' but even so, I wanted to hear his voice.
If only for a minute.
I felt like my world was spinning more out of control by each passing second, I could feel the tears build up in my ears as I found his number and hit 'call' pressing to the phone to my ear and waiting for him to pick up.
I waited for a few seconds before ending the call and trying again, nervously biting my fingernail for him to pick up as I felt a lone tear drop from my eye and fall down my cheek.
Eventually, I reached his voicemail and ended the call, as my eyes started swelling up even more with fresh tears as it became hard to hold it in and not let what I was feeling out.
Why did I always mess things up?
Why can't I be happy for once? All I did was sabotage and break things.
I heard the front door slam downstairs and then both cars start in the driveway, making me get up and go to my window to see both my parents driving away in their own cars, leaving me alone in the house.
I rubbed my eyes and walked over to my bathroom, closing the door behind me then I started the shower and started taking my clothes off whilst looking in the mirror.
My face was red and blotchy and disgusting from crying, and then I noticed my chest filled with love bits from last night and this morning with Maddox, which made me cry harder as I looked away from myself in the mirror and got into the shower.
Why did it hurt so much?
It wasn't like it was ever going to work out between us anyways, Maddox had a professional athletic career and I was heading to university in a month, why should he belittle himself for someone he hardly knew?
Pulling myself together and rubbing my eyes roughly to stop myself from crying, I wash my hair and my body and then turn the shower off and step out, wrapping a towel around me before I went back into my room.
I picked up my phone from the bed and sent Maddox a quick text, realising now that I rather just go back to how it was before I slept with him, if it meant I had one person in my life who didn't wish I never existed.
Once I send it, I turned my phone off and get into my bed and wrapped the blanket around me, still wet and shivering from the cold, as my eyes swelled up, tears threatening to fall, making me clench my eyes shut.
Stop crying Theo...
I just had to be strong one last time, just two more weeks and I was out of this town and I wouldn't have to see any of the faces of those who made my existence a living hell, ever again.
It was Monday and I felt exactly how I looked, like I had spent the whole weekend crying.
My parents didn't come back, Sunday my dad eventually sent me a simple text that he's staying at a hotel until the house gets sold so I figured my mom was going to do the same, none of them came back after all, even when I left for school.
I was used to this, the quiet, being left alone, that's where games had always come in to save the day, online I was liked, online I had friends but I was still the sad, skinny pathetic loser that got my ass beat up every other day.
My classes were dragging and all I wanted to do was go home and play on my PC.
Since sending Maddox that text, I haven't turned my phone back on, I logged onto my PC and cancelled my subscription to the gym and deleted my account with the gym, before paying for the self-defence class I took with Rick.
I found another gym that was closer to the university I was going to in town, it was twenty minutes from Maddox's apartment but I ignored that fact and signed up anyways and put my name on the list for a trainer.
This was all for the best, Maddox was out of my reach and someone I could never stand next to without not only humiliating him but making his life also a living nightmare.
Every time I thought about him and how he made me feel that night, all I wanted to do was cry, it was hard not to wonder what his face looked like once he read my text.
He probably didn't care, he had lots of clients and plenty of others dying for a one on one with him, I was just lucky enough to get him as my trainer because someone pulled out last minute, if it wasn't for that, I would just be another client.
I spent the rest of the school day trying to just stay out of everyone's way, eating my lunch at the back of the library and doing my work silently with nobody paying me any attention.
The last bell rung and I grabbed my bag and started putting my books inside before I left with the rest of my classmates, ignoring the way a popular girl laughed at me once she saw what I was wearing.
I had a world of Warcraft t-shirt on 'for the horde' I didn't know what she found so funny, it was just a t-shirt.
What was funnier was what she was wearing, a short crop top with little to no boobs on her chest, thinking she could get away with it but it just made her look stupid, I had to wonder if guys even liked that, she was clearly trying too hard and she laughed at me?
If she wasn't pretty, she'd be standing in my shoes right now, now that' I would find funny.
I felt someone grab my backpack and pull me back, making me almost fall over as I looked down and saw brand new white trainers between my legs, my whole body growing cold as I knew who they belonged to.
"Theodore, where have you been hiding?" Eric whispered harshly into my ear, before pulling me with him to the nearest boy's toilets.
He threw me to the ground as another guy I didn't know was washing his hands.
"Fuck off," Eric snapped out at the guy, making him step over me and scurry out the bathroom.
I looked up at Eric and saw he was alone and not with any of his football friends, which made me even more scared because now he was just doing this because he wanted to, instead of doing it for laughs with his friends.
"I heard something about you the other day," he started to say, as I tried to stand up but Eric put his foot on my chest roughly to stop me from moving.
"What's a freak like you going to No Limits for?"
He took his foot off my stomach and then kicked me in the side of my ribs.
"You think working out will make you less pathetic than you already are?" he laughed out, kicking me again, only this time hard enough to make me cry out and try and guard my stomach with my arms.
"Looking at you seriously pisses me off, you should just know your place and stay out of my fucking eyesight," he scoffed out, before he started undoing the buttons on his jeans.
I looked in horror at what he was doing, taking out his penis and walking over to stand above me, a sickening grin on his face as he started to pee on me, as he started laughing once I tried to move from under him.
It was disgusting and smelled even worse as Eric's foot caught my wrist and stood on it, stopping me from pushing him away as he finished peeing on me, pulling his pants back up, his eyes never leaving mine.
I just wanted to go home... but he had to do this to me today of all days.
I felt a burning feeling starting to get hotter inside of me as I used a technique Maddox had taught me, I used my leg to knock him down to the ground until his head hit the floor of the bathroom.
It was so slippery on the floor because of Eric but I had managed to stand up by grabbing hold on the bathroom sink, and from the corner of my eye I saw Eric's fist before I felt it as he grabbed hold of me by the collar of my jacket.
He hit me and kept hitting me in the face until I started to taste my own blood inside of my mouth, when he had finished hitting me, he had pushed me to the floor and swore out under his breath as he did the buttons on his jeans.
I gripped my face with my shaking hand as I moved away from him until my back hit the wall, he had picked up his school bag and turned around and went for the bathroom exit door, before turning to glare at me.
I don't know why or how long I sat there and cried for as I held my head in my bloodied hands, it wasn't until the school janitor came inside the bathroom and helped me up off the floor and out the bathroom, did I realise only an hour had passed since then and everyone had left already.

"Sorry to bother you, Chief," you said following the man's moves through your house. Charlie Swan was carrying a reclining chair with ease leaving it in the middle of the living room while you stood at the bottom of the stairs with your little four year old daughter in your arms. Cassie was exhausted. It had been a long plane ride and a bit more road travel, which knocked your little girl out as soon as you set foot in your new home in Forks. It was a long time since you had seen that place but of course you remembered Charlie Swan as kind as he had always been. Even when you were just starting to think about moving back to Forks he was the first to help you get a safe home for you and your daughter. You remembered looking up for Charlie's old phone number hoping it was still the same and when you dialed and heard the man's voice behind the phone you sighed in relief. At last life seemed to be smiling on you after a long time and Charlie was quick to offer to help you if you decided to return to town.
He told you about a house for sale next to his. The owner was elderly and preferred to live with one of her children and earn income from the house near the forest that could be bought by curious tourists so Charlie convinced her to sell you the house and at a lower price than she was originally asking because the house needed some repairs that he could do. So you thought no more about it and packed your things to return to Forks after the horrible years you had lived in Brownsville.
Charlie picked you up at the airport in his police cruiser and avoided turning on the siren cause Cassie was already half asleep in your arms when you got off the plane and he didn't want to disturb her, but Cassie had the strength to stay awake long enough to make him promise that next time he would turn on the siren as they drove around town.
The truth was that Charlie Swan was an angel. He arranged everything so you would have a quick return and even now he was bothering to get all your stuff out of the moving truck so you wouldn't have the worry of doing it later.
"Nonsense, I'm happy to do it. Besides, it's my day off."
"And that's why you shouldn't be doing all this. I know vacations for police officers are non-recurring."
"I'm the chief, I have certain privileges."
"Still."
"Well, I wasn't going to let you do this on your own" he replied, carrying the boxes with your and Cassie's clothes. He set them down on the kitchen island and leaned back against them to rest. You walked over and settling Cassie better in your arms you sat down in one of the chairs Charlie had given you "Billy and Jacob will be here in a little while to get all this settled so you can have your first night here without any problems."
"I still think it's too much. Stop spoiling me like this, Charlie, you even gave me part of your dining room!"
"Ah, it was nothing. Bella and I recently bought a new one and we didn't want to take it to the dump cause it still has some use. The table is made out of good wood and the chairs are freshly upholstered. Look at it, it suits perfectly!"
"That's not the point" you said, glancing sideways at the newly arranged dining room near the kitchen "The point is that you're doing a lot for me and it's not fair."
"Your father would have done the same for Bella if it had been about me" he replied reaching for a bottle of water from the installed cooler. A sudden tension appeared in the room as you both remembered what your father's life was like in Forks "Jackson was my best friend for a long time and when he died...I promised him that I would seek you out and support you as if you were my own and that is precisely what I am doing."
"You wouldn't have if I hadn't left and hadn't abandoned him. He died because of me"
"That's not true."
"He was left alone when I left. He died of grief"
"He died from the heart valve disease he had. Your father suffered it from a young age and even so, you had a right to look for your mother"
"I wish I hadn't" you murmured, cooing to Cassie who was beginning to get annoyed by the noise of your voices "I abandoned my father and didn't find anything worthwhile"
"Well, that doesn't matter anymore, stop tormenting yourself and thinking you killed your father. I was with him. He loved you and he died peacefully, remember him as the good man he was, child."
You sighed. Cassie went back to sleep peacefully
"You're right. I'm sorry."
"Don't worry, sweetheart. I know it's not the same, but you have me now and I'd rather die than let you leave again, do you hear me?"
"Easy, I have no intention of doing that" you half smiled "I'm running away from the tracks I left in Brownsville, I have no desire to go back under any circumstances. What I'm worried about is that the tracks won't rub off and show the way to the one I'm hiding from"
Charlie clicked his tongue.
"That should be the least of your problems. I have a gun and I know how to use it. He'll have to deal with that first before he gets to you."
"Thanks, Charlie."
"Although, if Chief Swan is as good at shooting as he is at fishing then you'll have to learn how to handle a gun yourself, honey" a voice appeared from the doorway followed by a young man's laughter.  You looked up meeting the unmistakable face of Billy Black next to his son Jacob. Billy entered your house being pushed by Jacob leaving him next to Charlie as he rolled his eyes "Be a little more modest, buddy."
"There's nothing wrong with bragging once in a while."
"Yeah, but you do it all the time."
"Shut up."
"Make me"
Charlie got up from his spot lunging towards Billy who ina swift movement spun the wheels of his chair avoiding Charlie's attack thus beginning a chase through the house dodging the obstacles of boxes on the floor. Jacob laughed taking Charlie's place in front of you.
"I thought we were coming to help with the move, not to watch them play like preschoolers?"
"Me too. I think Cassie will get along with them."
"Your little girl will beat them up right away"
"Probably."
You giggled quietly avoiding waking Cassie as Charlie and Billy finished their game to go back to the truck and get the last boxes, then you could finally get everything settled at home. Jacob smiled, looking at you
"I'm Jacob. You may not remember me but..."
"Are you kidding? I used to give you the bottle."
"No you didn't."
"Of course i did! My dad used to visit your parents a lot and he used to take me with him. You were a newborn baby and I used to volunteer to help Sarah feed you. You were the worst baby ever. You cried too loudly and squeezed the bottle with your swollen gums. Then you'd throw the milk back and you used to get really messy. Your poop was the smelliest I could remember."
"Don't say that!" he replied, embarrassed "I see you do remember me."
"And Quill and Embry. Tell me, are they still the same old fools?"
"They haven't changed at all."
You laughed.
"Perfect."
"Ok, these are the last boxes" announced Charlie walking into the house carrying with him a small box with Cassie's toys. Billy came in behind with some boxes on his lap "I think now we can get everything organized and finishing in time for you to get some rest."
"I'll clean up the little girl's room" offered Jacob standing up "then I'll fill the closet and set up the bed so you can lay her down, you must be tired from carrying her around for so long. is that okay with you?" he asked you. You nodded
"Yes, thank you Jacob."
"You're welcome. Give me that" The boy took the boxes off his father's legs and picked up Charlie's, all with one arm and with the other he carried the folding base of the bed. You opened your eyes wide
"Easy, big guy, when did you get so strong?"
"I don't know. It just... showed up" he replied disappearing up the stairs
"It showed up" said Charlie "Ah, I hope shows up something like that to me"
"Don’t hold your breath as that happens" Billy joked.
"I should do something for lunch" you said trying to stand up. You were going to put Cassie down on one of the couches and put some cushions around her, but Charlie won't let you. Billy agreed
"None of that. We'll order something."
"But..."
"Nothing" interrupted Billy "We'll buy pizza"
"You guys really need to stop doing this" you reproached. Billy picked up his phone
"Ah, sorry, you had to say that earlier, I'm already on the call."
"You guys are unbelievable"
Charlie smiled
"We know. oh I'll get Bella, she hasn't said hello yet" Charlie walked out before you could say anything else and closed the door dismissing the moving truck. Billy smiled complicitly, placed the order, gave the address and left the cell phone on the kitchen bar
"Dinner is served."
"Thank you."
"They had children's menu, so I ordered it for Cassie. I hear their brownies are delicious. Maybe I'll steal it for myself."
"I'll keep it as a secret"
Billy nodded with a smile and as the food arrived you chatted animatedly about what had happened in your absence, he also told you things about your father and all the times they went fishing together before his death. You were enjoying Billy's stories when time began to pass and Charlie didn’t return with Bella as he promised. Jacob was finishing Cassie's room and when the pizza arrived he came downstairs immediately, asking about Charlie's whereabouts.
"He went to get Bella, but he hasn't come back yet."
"That's strange, his house is right next door."
"Maybe something came up for him at the station" Billy shrugged.
You  decided to wait for the Swans to eat, but seeing that they didn't show up Jacob offered to investigate what was going on when suddenly the door opened and a very worried Charlie Swan walked in wiping the sweat from his brow
"Bella’s missing."
"What?"
Jacob suddenly became alert and Billy remained static in his place. You felt a knot in your stomach. While riding in the police cruiser that morning, you had heard something about tourist disappearances and wild creatures killing people in the woods and you feared Bella might be in that kind of danger. You were never close, but you knew her and occasionally went out together to talk or share a movie night. You still hadn't seen her after the years you were away and the least you wanted was for something bad to happen to her.
"Did you talk to any of her friends?"
"She was with them during classes, but they lost track of her on her way here. I'll call the Cullens, maybe..."
"You didn't know?" asked Billy "The Cullens left Forks, Charlie."
"Where did they go?"
"We'll find her" encouraged Jacob "But we have to go out and look for her before dark."
"I'll go with you" you said "I'll take Cassie to her room and..."
"No, no, stay" Charlie asked you "I left a note for Bella at home in case she comes back she’ll know that she has to come here and wait for me. If she does, call me right away, please" you nodded
"I'll call Harry and ask him to join along with the boys" Billy said and wheeled away down the hallway holding the phone to his ear. Charlie and Jacob left and you decided to take Cassie to the room, go down to the kitchen and make some coffee for the Brigadiers and Bella. If she was alone in the woods and the night was catching up with her then she was going to need something hot to get her strength back.
You hoped with all your heart that she was all right. For her, for Charlie.
.
.
.
Hours passed one after another with no sign of Bella. Your driveway was carpeted with people and police cruisers specially brought by Charlie to search for Bella. The entire town was scoured by officers from the early hours of the night, yet there was no trace of the chief's daughter. You decided to join the search taking the opportunity that Sue Clearwater was playing with Cassie - who was awakened by the ruckus of the patrol cars - asking if it was a good idea to search for her in the woods, but Harry refused.
"It's too dangerous, we don't know what might be among the trees. We can't risk losing any more people."
You were about to object his words when Jacob came up to you putting a hand on your shoulder telling you that he was right and that the forest was something not to be taken lightly. So you gave up, deciding to go back inside and refill the coffee pot when Jacob alerted Charlie that someone had found Bella.
A tall man walked in a straight line toward the Brigadiers where Billy and Harry watched him with restrained relief. He had a stocky frame and Bella unconscious in his arms seemed to weigh no more than a feather. His cropped black hair was messy and his lack of a shirt told you that the icy cold of the city didn't affect him at all
You knew him. His face was very familiar yet strange at the same time. You were back in Forks after a few years, but you knew that no one could change that much in that period of time.
Sam Uley was holding Bella and Charlie took her in his arms as he came out of the stupor and relief of having found his daughter. The Brigadiers sighed in unison and Billy thanked them all. You wanted to do something, to approach Charlie, to ask him if he needed help with Bella, but your eyes were caught in Sam’s.
They were dark, wild, like the forest behind him. You remembered him perfectly.
Before you left Forks you two were close friends and came to like each other as something more, but your leaving ended that and what you might have been up to that point.
You tried to look away, but then Sam's huge body began to shake, his knees buckled and he fell to the ground resting his hands on the dirt. Harry Clearwater reacted and approached him asking if he was okay.
"Tired" you heard him whisper causing you to shudder. Harry helped him up, whispered something in his ear and after taking one last look at you he disappeared into the woods. Harry walked back towards you.
"I thought the forest was dangerous"
"For us."
"What do you mean?"
Harry looked at you. Then he looked at his wife with Cassie in her arms standing at the doorway . He smiled.
"You'll find out soon, child"

georgenotfound- colour blind
Wc: 1857
Warnings: reader wearing a dress; one specific feature mentioned
George's birthday is coming up and I have no idea what to get him, I have already got some presents but I want to get him something that would be kind of special or show that I really care about him. When George isn't around I've been on call with dream to try and come up with some ideas but we never get very long to think before George comes back so its been kind of difficult.
I was in call with dream and sapnap joined to see what we were talking about and he gave the best suggestion ever. Colour blind glasses. What a great idea. I can get him glasses that will allow him to see colours properly or at least better for the first time and we can do a bunch of things together that he has never been able to appreciate before. While still in the call I ordered them to make sure I was getting the right ones, and now they arrive Wednesday.
This is so exciting I can't wait to do so many things with George that he isn't able to appreciate like other people can we can play Minecraft together, we can go to a park and look at all the flowers when they come back out in spring and my favourite thing ever we can watch sunsets or sunrises together.
Skip to Wednesday:
The glasses arrive today which I'm so excited about but I also have to be careful to not let George see them or the package because he gets curious when I order things but this time he isn't allowed to know.
I have been watching the parcel tracker intently for the last hour and now it should be here in the next 5 minutes. George is currently downstairs getting water before he has to go back up to film another video, I went to stand with him in the kitchen and we talked for a little bit before he left again. Seconds later the doorbell rang and I collected the parcel and hid it in the storage cupboard next to the door which George never goes in because he never goes outside.
Late that evening when George was done for the day he came down stairs and sat with me to watch tv with me. I was lying down on my own across the sofa but he moved my legs to lay down with me and cuddle which he likes to do after a long day.
"Who was at the door earlier?" He asked
"Oh just some guy trying to sell me stuff" I lied
"That's annoying" he remarked
After we went to bed and George was fast asleep I snuck out the bed to go and wrap all of the presents I had got so that it wouldn't be obvious exactly what everything was just incase he went in the cupboard for whatever reason. I am useless at wrapping especially by myself because I just don't seem to have big enough hands but I managed to get it done somewhat neatly or at least good enough that George wouldn't notice.
Skip to his birthday
It's George's birthday today and I couldn't be more excited, I woke up super early because I was so excited to give George his glasses and other presents. Of course waking up so early made no difference because George won't be up for another few hours. That man can sleep for forever with no issue at all, I wish that I could do the same but it just doesn't work like that does it.
George woke up about an hour after I did which I believe might be a record but thats besides the point. He moved over to cuddle into my side and kiss my cheek a few times before putting his head in the crook of my neck.
"Happy birthday love" I said
"Thank you" he said
"Let's get up I have some things for you" I said
He groaned but got up with me or should I say attached to me because he had his arms around my waist hugging me from behind as I tried to wash my face and brush my teeth. He only let go when we had to go down the stairs but as soon as we made it he picked me up and carried me around before dropping me down in the kitchen.
We worked together to make breakfast before I went into the cupboard to get all of his presents which I placed in George's lap along with his card. He read the card first which I really tried to put some nice meaning in because I want him to know I appreciate him even if I don't say it as often as I could. I watched his face as he read the words and his lips slowly turned into a smile and his eyes gleamed over.
"This is really sweet thank you" he said
He continued to open the presents leaving the glasses last which I was glad about. When he opened the last present and the box inside he looked very confused about which is understandable. He tried to read the label but he still didn't seem to understand, meanwhile I was aching to show him what they are so that we can do the exciting things.
"What are these?" He asked
"They are glasses that help you to see colours" I smiled
"Wait no way thats amazing I'm so excited to see the things you do" he said
He wanted to get ready for the day so that we could do all the things he wanted to with his new glasses. For fun I decided to wear a red dress that I like to wear all the time but George can't see the colour to the point that it just gets funny when he attempts to tell the colour.
Once the both of us were ready he wanted to go to the park to see what grass looks like so that's where we went and we sat on the grass looking at a flower bed and trees. He had yet to put the glasses on but I could tell he was itching to do it, I had them in my pocket so I took them out and slid them onto his face.
Watching him was the best thing in the world he looked all around mouth open and eyes wide under the classes from the shock of being able to see colours for the first time. He looked at the grass while touching it before looking at me and studying my face intently.
"Your favourite dress is red" he stated
"Yeah it is" I laughed
"And your eyes are as green as the grass thats amazing there so pretty" he said
"Aww thank you but I have to know what colour did they look to you before?" I asked
"Like a weird yellow sort of colour like a lot of things really" he said
His hands were put on my cheek and he pulled by face closer to his to look deeper into my eyes at their colour, it has always amazed me that he couldn't see green even though its quite a common colour but I never thought he would be so entranced with my eye colour. When he was done staring into my soul he kissed my lips sweetly and pulled me up from the grass so we could walk around a bit. He was so amazed by everything in sight which made us get weird looks from others but I just gave them a look back and they stopped.
We went back home after a good hour of just walking around places in London. Back at home we made lunch and talked to dream and sapnap who had been asleep until now. George was telling them all about the glasses and how amazing everything looked and he wouldn't stop bringing up how amazing my eyes were. He put on his glasses when both boys on the call turned their cameras on so that he could see dreams eyes seeing as they were green too but he wasn't as bothered by them.
"What's wrong with my eyes?" Dream asked
"They just aren't as vibrant and pretty as y/n's sorry" he said
Dream got fake upset with him and sulked in his chair which I had to try my best not to laugh at how stupid they were being. They wanted him to play Minecraft with the glasses on so he booted it up on the tv so I could play with him. We got into a new world in creative so we could just travel to places that would be more interesting.
It was in these moments that George realised that dream was actually green which was the funniest thing because thats like part of his brand but all George sees is a mustard yellow colour. We had a lot of fun showing him different things like the nether because for him they aren't red/ orange which again is an odd concept to comprehend.
We played for hours before dream and sapnap had to go and me and George were left to spend the evening together. I had promised George the other day that we could have whatever he wanted for dinner today and he wanted to order food so I did that for him and set up our small outside table to we could eat under the last bit of light for the day and then watch the sunset together.
The food arrived pretty quickly and we ate in the sunshine which wasn't the warmest considering the time of year but it was relatively nice today. We finished the food and I took the plates back inside and to the sink before going back out to sit with George who was now laying down on the grass staring at the sky which was beginning to turn slightly pink. I chucked the glasses at him and he put them on as I laid down besides him leaning against him.
We watched as the sky continued to fill with all sorts of colours from purple to orange like it does on days like this which is why I always watch the sunset whenever I get the chance. Once the sun had fully gone down George pulled me on top of him so that my head was laying on his chest as he played with my hair.
"Have you had a good birthday?" I asked
"I've had the best day all thanks to you and those amazing glasses" he said
"I'm glad you like them I just like watching your reactions to things" I said
"Well expect to see them a lot more because I love your eye colour and want to see it more" he said
"You are so cute" I giggled
That night we laid under the stars before cuddling in bed, it has just been a wonderful, day overall getting to spent so much time together and doing new things like being outside for so long.

Pay attention to me
Fandom: My Hero Academia
Pairing(s): Shigarki Tomura x GN!Reader
Genre: Fluff
Synopsis: Restless from your lack of attention to him in quarantine, Shigaraki takes matters into his own hands.
Wordcount: 2162
This is apart of a quarantine fluff collab done with the crackhead sanctuary discord server! Can’t wait to see how everyone’s fics turned out! This was fun to do I hope you all enjoy ٩( ᐛ )و

Shigaraki was secretly enthusiastic after a mass pandemic had broken out in Japan, usually the two of you would not be able to see much of each other due to the danger of being caught with your profession as a pro hero and his as an extremely wanted villain. Now you had no choice other than to be wrapped in each other's embrace as chaos roamed outside the solid walls of your modern apartment. No one was there to judge you guys being together and the usual paparazzi outside of your residence had been resolved as people were not stepping foot outside.
However, what he didn’t expect was for the hero commision to still call you forward as an essential worker. Villains it seemed were still up to no good, even though Shigaraki had told the rest of the league to stay put and inside; lesser known villains had decided to make their own names known in the country's vulnerable state. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the times you were home you had steadily grown yourself attached to the retro nintendo switch gaming console. What the fuck was so good about animal crossing anyway? Did you enjoy spending time with that rat Tom Nook instead of him?!
Shigaraki was used to him being the gamer between the two of you, he enjoyed it as you pleaded for him to get off whatever device he was on at the time by smothering him with kisses till he gave into you. Sometimes he would even do so on purpose to get affection from you. Being on the other end of it though, was something he quickly learned he did not enjoy. Not being one to initiate intimate gestures in the relationship, he just watched you hoping you would notice him sulking and give in to him.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*    *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Sunday morning. No hero duties, just you and him, sleeping in till noon; but as his hand caught the coldness coming from your side of the bed, Shigaraki buried his head into his pillow and groaned. He could hear your padded footsteps going downstairs. Rolling over he yawned into his hand before checking the time, 8:45am. Why were you awake at 8:45am. Why was he awake at 8:45am on a Sunday morning.
Throwing off the sheets he winced as his feet hit the cold wooden floor of your shared bedroom, he was going to have to drag you back to your cocoon pile himself. Muttering, he walked his way downstairs before peaking into the living room to see you huddled on the
couch, switch in hand. Of course you were up so early just to go on that damn game.
“Player two, what the fuck are you doing awake right now”
Your head snapped up like a deer caught in headlights as you saw your boyfriend's tired face leaning beside the door frame. Sheepishly rubbing at your neck you pouted up at him, “But Daisy Mae is selling turnips”
“Daisy who is doing what???”
“Daisy mae” You repeated bringing your switch up so he could look at what you were referring to “look at her she's so adorable, I have to buy from her I can’t make her sad by not buying”
Shigaraki looked down to your screen and blanked. There on screen was an orange little pig with a hat full of turnips, and standing by its side smiling brightly was your avatar. You got out of bed for a pig??? A pig selling turnips from its head...and was that a snot drop hanging from its snout?!!
He looked back up at you and if emojis existed in real life, he swore you would be the pleading eyes one with the face you were pulling at him. Ok, but who gave you the right to be so fucking adorable, he was meant to be mad at you for having woken him up so early!! Over a PIG!!!
“And why do you have to ‘buy turnips from daisy mae’ so early in the morning, you can do it later on”
“You can only buy before noon” You pleaded at him “Come on who could resist look how cute she is”
“I can be cute” Shigaraki huffed under his breath “Come back to bed, I’m tired and cold”
“Ok ok after this I will, you go warm it back up for me” You had already started slotting your switch in the port that hooked it up to the TV.
Shigaraki puffed out a breath but obliged and made his way back upstairs, waiting upon your arrival. Sliding back between the covers he peered at the doorway to your bedroom patiently to see when you would come back, however something about the warmth of the sheets and the way the mattress moulded perfectly into his back pulled him back into slumber in an instant however much he tried to fight it.
When he awoke again it was 11:15 and he was content to see you rolled up on his chest. He breathed out slowly, tucking a hair strand behind your ear, before kissing the top of your head.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*    *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Waking and sleeping at ridiculous times had seemed to turn into the norm for you after that however, as he once again caught you out of bed at 3am this time, when he awoke from feeling the coldness of your body not pressed up against his. He blearily rubbed his eyes with his forefinger and thumb before seeing a brief light flickering from downstairs through the cracks of your bedroom door. He threw his head back and protested, muttering under his breath on how much of a hassle you were, before pulling off the covers and making his way downstairs. Blinking at going into the light he found you once again curled up on the sofa, controller in hand and staring avidly at the TV screen.
“Y/N.”
“Yes?” You replied not taking your eyes off the screen.
“What are you doing awake?”
Well at least you had the dignity of alighting a blush that made its way up your neck and across your cheeks. You meekly turned your gaze to him ready to spring up your puppy eyes but he looked back at you with a deadpan expression. Still, you tried your luck by pouting at him and blinking your eyes in mock innocence.
“But shiggy there’s a meteor shower today and I had to watch it”
“It's a game, can't you do it in the morning?” Shigaraki sighed, being once more brought to weakness by your gaze. He couldn’t resist you, not when you were looking at him like that paired in an oversized t-shirt with a blanket draped over your head. HIS oversized t-shirt might he add.
“I have to do it nowww, the stars only come between 7pm and 4am”
Honestly he didn’t know how to respond, you really stayed up to watch a pixelated star fall from the sky. Is this how bad he was? He shook his head but couldn’t help at the slight smile that tugged at his lips. Making his way over to you he took off your blanket before wrapping it round the both of you.
“Lets see this damn star that has you awake all night then”
You beamed at him. He melted.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*    *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
With the days going by of you ignoring him for your switch, Shigaraki thought doing the same to you would be a good idea. But as it went on he couldn’t bring himself to carry on, he wanted your attention, and he had just thought of a way to achieve his goals.
Basing his plan on the night a few weeks ago when you had stayed up for that meteor shower, he dragged out an assortment of blankets to the old trampoline you had in your garden. Since that night he had decided if you so badly wanted to stay up for a stupid capatilist racoon, you could do so with him too and experience the real thing. He had gone ahead and checked the weather for when clear skies would take place for you guys to stargaze in your back garden, along with a nice dinner beforehand. He had already started cooking back when quarantine had begun trying to ease the load off you as you worked on your hero duties, and although not the best, his food was the least bit savagable now. (Although this did include multiple temper tantrums on his behalf and having to call Kurogiri to calm himself down.)
Coming back inside he checked on the curry he had left to simmer only to find it was burning. FUCK. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck, ten minutes away he looked up in exasperation at the mess in front of him, this wasn’t going well. The curry was burnt, the salad was old and the flowers he got you had disintegrated when he tried to move them into a vase as he wasn’t wearing his gloves earlier on. Maybe it wasn’t too late for Kurogiri to teleport some decent food his way…
As the door chimed from your arrival he hurriedly put down the plates and scratched at his neck, he didn’t usually do huge gestures in the relationship between you guys, that was more your thing. He showed his love in small ways, he liked touching you, having at least one body part pressed against you eased his nerves. Whether it be your thighs brushing against each other as you sat next to each other or feeling the warmth of your hand against his leathered one it never failed to put his mind at ease. This was long overdue, he wanted to show you how much he cared, if things would just go his fucking way the once.
“I’m home!” You called out, he knew your routine by now, you would go hop in the shower as to decontaminate yourself from any germs and then come eat with him before going off to spend hours on your switch. Well not tonight, you were his for tonight.
“Welcome home, brat”
His attention turned back to the utter chaos in front of him and he brought his forefinger and thumb up to massage the bridge of his nose. Picking up his phone with all fingers but his pinky he dialled Kurogiri’s number but stopped in his tracks as he heard a gasp in the room.
“Shiggy?”
His ears felt hot as he turned to face you, you were looking at the small dining table set up in the kitchen and looked up at him with tears in your eyes.
Shit.
His cooking really was so bad he had made you cry fuck this wasn-
“Shiggy you did this for me?”
...
“Well who else would I do it for”
The air was knocked out of his lungs as you flung yourself into his arms, he was still fearful whenever you made sudden movements on him as of his quirk but he relaxed as he noticed the leather adoring his hands was there.
“I had a bad day at work today, I missed you so much all day”
Shigarakis arms wrapped back around you as he buried his face into your hair. “I missed my player two aswell”
Staying in each other's embrace, Shigaraki hummed in content. “I burnt the curry by the way”
“It's the thought that counts, I’m sure it isn’t so bad”
It was bad. Shigaraki seemed to have missed out a lot of steps and he ended up calling Kurogiri after all, after eating and showering together (you had jumped straight into Shigarakis arms and needed to be clean from your day of work) Shigaraki grabbed your hand and tugged you outside.
“I thought we could stargaze together…” Shigaraki muttered out his ears turning red yet again. “Like you do with bob rook”
“Tom nook?” You laughed
“Yes the dumb racoon boy”
“Are you jealous of said dumb racoon boy?” You asked, amused.
“No” He replied too quickly, and was silent for a while before speaking up “You’ve been playing on that game a lot recently though”
“Finally got a taste of your own Medicine, have you?”
“I’m not as bad as you”
“I beg to differ”
He flicked the top of your forehead as you giggled and laid back in the nest he had built on your trampoline, before staring up at the sky. It really was a beautiful night to stargaze, the weather was pleasant too, with the warm summer air and no breeze. Shigaraki laid down next to you, laced his fingers with yours and brought them up to his lips, placing a chaste kiss on your knuckles.
“I love you”
“More than Tom Nook?”
Pretending to think about it you hummed. “Mmmm yes I think so”
“You think so?”
“Of course I love you more than Tom Nook dummy”
Shigaraki was quiet for a while before softly muttering out “I love you too”

Fred walked downstairs, noticing a faint smell of apples in the joke shop. “So are we selling apple juice now, Georgie?” he joked.
But George looked confused, “What apple juice? I could only smell caramel-” And then the answer finally came to George, “Amortentia!”
Fred followed George to the shelf displaying amortentia and immediately realized a firecracker just exploded next to this shelf, causing at least four bottles of amortentia to break and the love potion inside to spill.
George waved his wand and cleaned up the mess, but a satisfied smirk soon appeared on George’s lips, “Strange. Didn’t know you liked apples this much.”
“Shut up and go back to work!” Fred raised his voice, covering for the fact that he’s a complete mess now.
That fainting smell of apple that’s still lingering in the shop also had a dash of the scent of book pages in it. And this combination could only remind Fred of one person.
You.
The person whom he married out of a dare. The person who he fell in love with during the process. The person who just walked out of his life.
George noticed the change in Fred’s expression. How defeat was now written all over his face. “Mate, you need to do something. You can’t just let her walk away like that.”
“What can I do?” Fred sighed, “Maybe she’s been waiting for this all the time.”
George sighed with Fred. This wasn’t like his brother. Soon the lingering smell of amortentia caught his attention, and a brilliant idea popped into George’s mind. “She has feelings for you too, and I can prove it to you!”
~
You pushed open the door of the joke shop. George just called you claiming that there’s an emergency, so you rushed to the joke shop immediately after work.
George approached you with a small glass vial, “Y/N, this is the new perfume I just made. I need your opinion.”
So this is the emergency??
You looked at George, couldn’t decipher what his smile meant. But you did know one thing. In fact, everyone who went to school with the twins should know the rule: be careful of what they handed to you. So you stepped away from that vial and asked with caution, “When did the joke shop start selling perfume?”
“Oh, we are always trying to expand our business,” George noticed how you became alert, so he added, “I swear to Merlin, this is not a prank!”
Still finding his smile suspicious, but for Merlin’s sake, you still decided to take the vial.
“Does it smell good? What does it smell like?” George asked carefully.
“Hmm...” The perfume did smell very good. You could smell the sweetness of cinnamon, a dash of gunpowder, but it also smelled so familiar. It smelled like...Fred’s cologne? “George, I’m pretty sure someone else has already made a perfume like this.”
“Really? How so?” George felt his heart beating at his throat, so scared that you might say another person’s name.
“Isn’t this just Fred’s cologne?” You were finding this unbelievable. How could George not recognize his own twin’s cologne?
“Oh really!!” Hearing a definitive answer from you has made George so happy that he pulled you into a hug. “Got it! Thank you for your opinion! You’re the best!”
“You’re welcome...?” Watching George being so happy that he could start dancing at any minute, you were beginning to think that the chemicals in the perfume were toxic. How could making a plagiarized perfume make a man so happy?
~
Two days later, you apparated to the joke shop again. It was raining outside. Maybe the weather was trying to set the tone for what was about to happen next. After taking a deep breath, you knocked on the door of the twins’ apartment, the apartment that you called home for the past year.
Fred opened the door, letting you in without saying a word. You tried not to look at him so you could appear indifferent and won’t be affected by his expressions.
“Here’s the divorce document,” you said as you took out all the paper in your bag. He took the documents and flipped through the papers quickly, still not saying anything at all.
You couldn’t tell if his silence meant he’s also not ready to say goodbye or he just had nothing to say to you. But you tried not to overthink as you continued, “Oh, before you sign it, you still have one wish left. What do you want me to do?”
“What if I said,” he finally looked at you, his eyes capturing yours, “I don’t want you to go?”
His words were like a drum in your ears, rendered you speechless. Before you could fully process what he just said, Fred continued, “It might sound crazy, but for the past few days, I realized I just couldn’t imagine a life without you anymore.  I know I’ve lived 20 years without you perfectly fine, but now that I’ve had you in my life, I don’t ever want to live without you again. I know I could be insensitive sometimes, and I probably did something stupid that made you mad in the past year, but I’m willing to change if you tell me to.”
“All I’m trying to say is,” he took a deep breath and continued, “Please allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. And please don’t divorce me.“
You finally let out a soft laugh. That’s Mr. Darcy’s line in Pride and Prejudice. You remembered reading this part to him during Christmas, and you couldn’t believe that he actually memorized this line.
Fred panicked when you weren’t talking, “But of course, if you really want to, I wouldn’t stop you. I-“
“You know, you don’t have to use your last wish on this,” you stopped him, “I was going to say yes anyway. But If you insist, that won’t be a problem with me.”
Fred’s eyes widened as he processed your words, “Wait, does that mean-“
You answered his question by pulling him down and pressing a kiss on his lips. He was shocked by your sudden action but soon kissed you back with his hands finding your waist and pulling you closer to him.
So this is what it feels like to kiss him, and it’s so much better than how you’ve imagined it would be. It started a soft kiss but soon became more passionate, as if you were making up for all the time you two spent on being oblivious.
“Should’ve done this earlier.” A smirk appeared on Fred’s lips when you finally pulled away.
“Idiot,” you rolled your eyes, but your cheeks were still heated.
He chuckled before giving you another soft peck on the lips. His hands were still resting on your waist.
“And you’re still this idiot’s wife.”
~(warning: people pretending to choke, food mention)~
“Y/N, there’s a Mr. Weasley looking for you,” the receptionist raised her eyebrows and smiled at you.
“Thanks! I’ll be done in a minute!” You quickly finished the last sentence and looked at Luna from across the table with your puppy eyes.
She chuckled, “Alright, you can leave early today.”
“Thanks, Luna, you’re the best!” You flicked your wand to pack up your bag before running to the door.
“Tell Fred I said hi!” you heard Luna’s voice behind you.
“I will!”
A month after your fake marriage ended, you quit your job at Whizz Hard Books. You didn’t want to work in a place that wouldn’t accept who you really are.
Ginny introduced you to Luna Lovegood and The Quibbler. You immediately fell in love with the whimsical ideas and style of The Quibbler, and Luna gave you a new job as you two hit it off very quickly. So this is where you work now. No need to hide your background and use a fake last name. This place accepted you for who you are.
Fred was at the door, opening his arms when he saw you running to him. “Happy one-year anniversary, darling!”
You giggled as you ran into his arms, “and this time, it’s real.”
“Yep,” he pressed a kiss on your forehead, “ready?”
You nodded, and the next second you two apparated to your favorite restaurant.
The dinner was delicious, and for dessert, Fred ordered your favorite cake. But when you were enjoying the cake, you suddenly felt something hard inside. This was extremely dangerous, for you could’ve swallowed it if you weren’t paying attention. You were just about to complain when you finally realized what it was.
It’s a ring!
You were surprised. Was Fred trying to propose? But last time you checked, you two were still legally a married couple.
But this also seemed like what he would do on your one-year anniversary. You were sure he was waiting to see your surprised face, and an idea soon came to you.
You pretended that you were trying to pick up your spoon because your elbow “accidentally” swept it down on the floor a few seconds ago. When you were sure Fred couldn’t see you, you slid the ring on your finger. Then you got up and took another bite of the cake like nothing out of the ordinary happened.
A few seconds later, you started coughing. Your brows were furrowed as your hands reached for your neck like you just choked on something.
Fred was freaking out, knowing that he’s the reason behind all this, “Darling, are you alright?”
The only response you could produce was a few glottal sounds and you looked like you were almost crying.
Fred ran to you as fast as possible. He wanted to help, but he had no idea what to do as his brain was in an absolute mess now. The only thing he could manage to do was apologizing again and again, “I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have done that. Baby, I’m so sorry…”
The noise you two were making attracted the other customers’ attention, and you saw a waiter approaching you with his wand, trying to help. You knew it’s probably time to stop this prank.
“Are you talking about this?” You finally stopped acting and waved your left hand in front of him.
Fred’s expression froze, still trying to recover from the terror of accidentally hurting you. After a few moments, he finally realized, “Wait, does that mean…”
“YES!” You chuckled.
Fred’s furrowed brows finally unfolded as a bright smile appeared on his lips. He picked you up and spun you around, “She said YES!”
The crowd around you was clapping and cheering while your husband was cheering himself as well.
You giggled, “Freddie, you know we never went through with the divorce, right? So technically, I’m still your wife.”
“I know, darling, but I figured that I owe you a proper proposal,” he said while pressing multiple soft kisses on your face, “Plus, I just want to make this official. I love you, darling.”
“I love you too,” You smiled as your lips found his again, “I love you most ardently.”

The End of Julie and the Phantoms - A [very long] Theory
The core of this theory was inspired by many posts that I have seen saying that Julie’s “everything was a dream” shirt may have insinuated that nothing happening on the show is actually reality. I brought my series finale pitch to my dear friend @willexx who then helped me develop this headcanon into something I cried about during lunch.
It starts out pretty heavy, but there are some little light things here and there because it’s what the himbos would have wanted.
We start here:
In the last episode, the boys are ready too cross over. It’s an emotional moment for everyone, they’re crying, Julie is sobbing, and we as an audience have definitely seen better days. With one last “we love you, Julie,” a flash of light overtakes the garage space, blinding our screens.
The scene flashes to Julie lying in bed, waking up from her ringing alarm.
She is visibly confused, clearly wondering how she got to bed when the last thing that she remembers is the boys’ painful departure. When she reaches for her phone to turn off her alarm -- it’s a school day -- she quickly notices the date:
It’s the same day in 2020 that she met the boys, that she was going to clean out her mom’s garage, and that she had to perform to keep her spot in the music program.
So, none of it was real?
Not exactly.
The experience was a sort of dream-like saga that was designed for her to be able to grieve on her own, and rediscover her voice in her own way. But just as the panic sets in that it was a complete figment of her imagination, the feeling of cold metal on her left hand becomes too hard to ignore: One of Luke’s rings.
Reggie’s leather jacket is hanging in her closet.
Alex’s fanny pack is slung across the back of a chair.
But when she runs downstairs, clad in her dinosaur slippers, rushing to the garage to see if the guys were there -- they aren’t. They have crossed over.
As she moves through the day, she’s a new Julie, but everything else is the same. Instead of a baseball cap and low ponytail, Julie throws on her black jeans and Reggie’s leather and lets her hair run wild. She’s displaying a confidence that Flynn hasn’t seen in a long time, that seemed to have hit Julie overnight.
Julie sings Wake Up in music, and keeps her spot in the program. She doesn’t oogle Nick in the halls and she tells Carrie off when there’s an attempt at an insult made.
Real or not, the boys helped her. They did their job.
When she gets home, and Ray irks her about cleaning the garage or selling the house, she is quick to insist that she doesn’t want to move and that if he needs her for the rest of the night, she’ll be in her mother’s studio.
There aren’t any instruments except for the piano, and the space has the original layer of dust that it had before her and the guys started using the space again. Julie feels empty. But she reminds herself that the ring on her finger is real, extremely real, so she retraces her steps that she had taken in the first episode and tracks down the Sunset Curve demo CD, puts it in the stereo, and plays it.
Nothing happens. Or, at least -- nothing that she could see.
The camera pans up as Julie is hard at work to organize the garage, and we see the boys in the chairs on the ceiling, watching over her fondly.
~This is where @willexx started to throw in some epic ideas~
The boys are real, and they have crossed over, which renders Julie unable to see them. However, in her reset reality without them, no one remembers Julie and the Phantoms or the fact that the boys existed in the first place. The boys, while she can’t see them, visit her and try to make contact with her as much as they can, even though their times with her are limited since they are supposed to be on the other side.
She’ll feel a ghost of a touch on her hand or her hair, and know that Luke is there. When she’s in the car and the radio is on a country station, she knows that it’s Reggie. In a journal for school, a small “okay” will be written in the corner of a page, and it is Alex. These little notes keep her going, and she’ll just sigh and say “my boys,” and leave everyone around her confused.
Sometimes, when she wakes up in the morning, the demo tape can be heard playing in the garage. Somehow she’ll get filled with hope that if she runs into the garage, the boys will be there rocking out without her like she used to scold them for left and right -- but no one is there. Ray comments that the stereo is broken and Julie has no choice but to nod along.
One day she finds Luke’s songbook that had been buried in the plastic garbage bags of the boys’ belongings. She still brings Unsaid Emily to his parents, and she cries herself to sleep that night.
When Julie blows up as a solo artist, she actually records Unsaid Emily, and she records Bright, and all of the other songs that her and Luke wrote together. Luke Patterson is in the writing credits for many of the songs, where Trevor never bothered to list him, and a part of Luke is at piece.
On the two year anniversary of Rose’s passing, Julie finds Luke’s “angst flannel.” Ray asks where she got it; she tells him a thrift store. But it feels warm, like all of the guys are there, hugging her.
Another morning, she could swear that Luke and Reggie are strumming out Flying Solo on level one volume, and once again finds herself darting to the garage with no good excuse except to keep her hopes up. They, unsurprisingly, aren’t there -- but a note is, that says “you’re a star, Jules. We love you.”
The handwriting is messy. She knows it’s from Luke, who probably fought the boys to even write the note because he just wanted to talk to her even though they need to move on and his handwriting is awful. The note gets tucked into the pocket of the flannel, and when she needs to be reminded that she’ll be okay, she pulls it out of the pocket and holds it tight.
Before every show, she reads the note, and mumbles a little prayer to them wherever they are -- even if no one else believes they are real.
When Luke’s flannel starts to lose it’s original sweet scent of Emily and Mitch’s house, Julie spends an hour crying on the floor of her bathroom. A faded orange beanie appears in her room the next day.
Little notes from Luke appear here and there, but never from any of the guys. In the shadows where she can’t see them, Alex tells Luke that in order for both themselves and Julie to move on, Luke needs to stop leaving her notes -- so most of the ones that Julie finds are even more messy than usual, like Luke was trying to write them without the guys noticing.
During one of their forbidden conversations, Julie says to Luke: “hey, I never told you this before... But I’m so glad you’re here. I don’t know what I would do without knowing that you guys were still around. I think I would have lost my mind, and would have been convinced that I went crazy.”
Luke could have ran to Alex, repeated Julie’s tearful words, and given the drummer a fat “I told you so.” But he doesn’t. Julie’s validation is the only validation that he needs.
Whenever her and Carlos and Ray make an extra seat at their dinner table for Rose, Julie imagines, deep in her mind, that it is for Reggie too. Reggie deserved a seat at their table; deserved to be a part of their family. A family that would have loved him.  And when a fork falls off of the table, Julie knows he’s there. One day, Julie asks Ray how he would have felt about having another son. He responds confused, and Julie gets tears in her eyes, and neither of them bring it up again.
When Julie and Flynn go to Pride together, Julie wears Alex’s fanny pack even though she hadn’t gotten any signs from him since they had all moved on. He still doesn’t reach out afterwards, too overwhelmed by her gesture to think of a way to properly extend his gratitude and love for the girl who is keeping his spirit alive -- but Luke lets her know that he was grateful.
Luke still visits Julie like he visits Emily and Mitch. And on Luke’s birthday every year, Julie goes to a little bakery after school and buys herself a cupcake; sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night to light a candle and sing happy birthday. When she lights the candle, the candle gets blown out. Every year after that first year, she gets candles that you have to turn on and off so that Luke can’t ruin the moment.
(He ends up throwing the fake candle on the ground out of retaliation.)
Julie is so emotionally stable for the most part that the complete change is a shock to Ray. He tries to ask her what happened, but she always acts like nothing happened and then hides in her room for hours. Sometimes, she makes random little comments out of the blew and Ray has many conversations with Victoria on whether or not he should have Julie seeing Dr. Turner again.
At her first solo concert, Julie walks into the dressing room to find “Stand Tall” written three times, in three different handwriting styles, in red, pink, and blue. The message in blue is the messiest by far, and is followed up with a heart.
The name of Julie’s first album is Phantoms.

And the Living is Easy (Fred x reader)
Summary: You spend the first night of summer vacation getting into trouble with the Weasleys + Harry and Hermione. Fred x reader. Fluffy mischief mostly, but sex is discussed and implied.
Warnings/Notes: Light sexual content but not all out smut, alcohol, heights, language. I wrote this to be a stand alone, but I enjoyed it so much that it might become part of a loose series of slice of life-y reader x twins fics set at the burrow over the summer! ps i did not edit this at all after writing it at 2am so. uh
Summer at the Weasley’s is my favorite time of year. After my mother passed, you were tossed around from boarding school to boarding school, relative to relative, never really having a say in where you went, or with whom. But ever since becoming fast friends with Fred and George while repairing brooms for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, you’ve pretty much been considered an honorary Weasley.
You stow your suitcases in the overhead and squeeze into a seat next to Fred and George. Across from you, Ron, Lee, and Harry are packed in.
“Do you reckon you’ll ever make it out to the burrow, Lee?” asks George pointedly.
“Yeah, you don’t know what you’re missing out on. Mrs. Weasley’s hotcakes are out of this world.” Harry says.
“And there’s loads of space to play quidditch.” you say.
“And loads of secret spots not even Mum knows about where we can basically do whatever we like.” adds Fred.
“You know my mum will hardly let me out of her sight for a day. Merlin’s sake, she’s practically ass to elbow on me all summer.” Lee says, faking a pout. “Quit ribbing at me, would you? Or I’ll spend the summer in my room coming up with derogatory names to call you on the Quidditch pitch.”
Murmurs of “Come on, we’re only joking.” and “Fine, fine.” fill the packed compartment. You lift your rat Pansy up to the window to show him the scenery.
“Bet you’ve never seen the fine English countryside like this, eh Pansy?” you baby-talk at him, scratching his little noggin.
“You know that thing is never gonna talk back at you, right Y/N?” says Fred, rolling his eyes.
“You never know. Look what happened to Scabbers.” you say, wiggling you eyebrows. “This rat could also secretly be a creepy little pervert who watches me undress at night.”
“I suppose it isn’t unprecedented in the rat community,” agrees George. Ron scowls in disdain.
“That’s my pet we’re talking about!” he says, causing everyone to burst into laughter.
“Yeah, fine pet he was.” says Harry, grinning.
“I will say, Ron-” Fred begins, clearing his throat. “You’ll never find another like him.” He claps his little brother on the back and stands up, peering down the hallway. “Oi, it’s the trolley, look alive Georgie.” George rises and straightens his coat. The boys have been planning for ages to charm the trolley witch into selling their skiving snackboxes. They run off down the car towards her. You tuck Pansy back into his cage and watch the scenery go by yourself. Before you know it, you’re being shaken awake by Fred and George.
“C’mon, Dad is waiting!” says George.
“Got you some chocolate frogs, but that means you owe us one.” says Fred, shoving a wriggling paper bag into your hands. Delighted, you expertly open the bag, catch a frog, and slurp it up before it manages to escape.
“Tank -ou” you mumble, your mouth still full. Lugging your trunks over to meet Mr. Weasley, you smile with excitement. Every summer with the Weasleys is a blast, but you know this one will start off with a bang because last week Fred absconded with a jug of top shelf mead from Filch’s office. You’d all agreed that you needed it more, since you want to have fun and have no money, while Filch obviously dislikes fun and ostensibly has some amount of money squirreled away from all his groundskeeping or lurking or whatever his job is.
After greeting Molly, you and the twins bound up to their room- and, when you’re here, your room- pushing and shoving your way up the narrow stairwell. You toss your things down and throw yourself onto a bed, spreading your arms as if making a snow angel.
“Oh, boys, it is good to be home!” you say, laughing. Fred and George always joke that their mother likes you, Harry, and Hermione better than any of her own actual children, and you love teasing them about it.
“Speak for yourself, she’s already got that sending-us-to-de-gnome-the-
garden-while-hungover gleam in her eyes,” retorts George good-naturedly.
“And get your shoes off my bed! Mum will have all three of us beating out the rugs if she sees that.” says Fred. You close your eyes and pretend to be asleep, baiting the boys into attempting to push you off the bed. You wind up making such a ruckus roughhousing that Hermione comes in looking concerned, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. You all three pause from your compromised position to look at her, you releasing a vise grip on Fred, George dropping your left leg, which he had been twisting violently.
“When did you get here?” you ask, running to hug her.
“Just apparated over, my parents would never forgive me if I didn’t at least drop by for dinner before practically moving here for the summer!” she replies, turning to greet the twins.
“Are you going to be participating in our little soiree tonight, ‘Mione?” asks George, raising an eyebrow.
“What are you three planning?” she asks sternly, stifling an excited smile.
“You’ll just have to wait and see,” you say.
“But don’t wear white shoes.” warns Fred. Hermione gives you all a funny look before running off to finish her greetings.
“Where are we going tonight, Freddie?” you ask, looking up at your tall friend. He gives you a cheeky glance.
“Oh, out by the bog. There’s a huge hill between there and the house, so we can make a fire and nobody will see.”
“And there’s a huge stand of trees and a pond between that spot and the neighbors’,” says George.
“You two have got it all figured out. And you’ve got the firewhiskey! What a night, what a night it shall be.” you say, your voice singsonging as you dance exaggeratedly.
“Too bad nobody invited any girls.” says Ron from the doorway. He’s been standing in the hallway looking in the mirror for some time now, fussing with his hair.
“What am I, chopped liver?” Ginny shouts from her open door down the hall.
“YOU don’t count!” Ron replies.
“We know you’ve got someone else in mind, little brother.” George says, flicking Ron in the ear.
“It’s pretty obvious,” Fred agrees.
“You get all flustered when she corrects your grammar,” you say.
“And you let her braid your hair.” says Fred.
“And you-” begins George, but Ron interrupts, his face beet red.
“Shhhh! Buzz off you two, or I’ll start blabbing on about who you’re interested in as well.”
The twins exchange a somewhat threatened glance, but say nothing.
“That’s right, I’m not as dull as you lot like to think, thank you very much. I notice things. So let me alone or I’ll sing like a canary!” Ron finishes, turning back to the mirror for a final glance at his hair before trotting downstairs.
“You two have crushes?” you demand, turning to stare down the twins. Fred shrugs with his usual attitude but you notice a light blush spreading across each of their cheeks. You swat him across the chest. “Why didn’t you tell me? Who is it? You motherfuckers.” You grab George by the collar. “George, tell me who it is! A crush, my god.” You throw your hands up in the air. They’re being super weird, so you decide to drop the subject. “When you snog every girl and half the boys in the school, between the two of you, you practically hold us all down to tell us the details but now you’ve got a crush and suddenly you’re like a couple of mimes.” You look each of them in the eyes, and both avoid your stare. “Fine! Don’t tell me.” You throw your hands up in mock anger and lead the charge downstairs to begin setting the table for dinner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~After dinner, you pass the evening playing cards and chatting until Mr. and Mrs. Weasley retire for the night. Then, you’re left with all your friends and Percy, who it has been agreed simply cannot know you’re sneaking out to drink in the woods, because he is a killjoy. Using a previously discussed maneuver, Hermione attempts to trick him into believing that she and Ginny are going to bed, hoping that he will get nervous about being bullied if left alone with you and the twins, and elect to follow them to bed soon after. However, Percy is in an unusually jovial mood, and so Ron and Harry are forced to retreat as well. As a last line of defense, you pretend to fall asleep on George’s shoulder, nuzzling into his sweater. When Percy gets up to go to the bathroom, you dash outside into the moonlit yard, covering your mouth so your giggles don’t give you away. You run to crouch behind the garden shed, doubled over with laughter.
“I thought he would never stop yapping.”
“God, how are you two related to that bore?”
“We can’t help it.” Fred says, bending to gather rocks from the ground.
“What are you doing?” you ask.
“Watch!” he raises his hand to throw a pebble at Ginny’s window, but you grab his wrist.
“Have you lost the plot? Percy will hear! And probably your mum too, with your aim. I’ve got a better idea,” you say, peeking around the garden shed while gesturing for the boys to stay put. You pop out of the shed with a dusty, rickety broom.
“Does this thing still work?” you ask.
“Well enough,” says Fred, getting a running start and jumping on the broom. Wobbling a bit, he sails up to Ginny’s window and confers with the girls, then moves on to Ron’s window, where he perches on the sill, one foot dangling out the window.
Beside you, you’re aware of George’s presence beside you in the cool, sticky night.
“Bloody brilliant,” he murmurs, elbowing you gently. “How’d you even know that thing was in there?”
“Lucky guess. I mean, with a family full of Quidditch players, there’s bound to be a broom lying about someplace.”
Fred jumps down onto the broom and turns a few experimental loop de loops overhead before nearly falling and coming to a shaky landing near your feet.
“That one belongs on the rubbish heap, honestly,” he says, laughing as he tosses the old thing aside.
“Oh, sure, blame it on the broom,” you tease.
He’s soon followed by Ginny and Hermione on Ginny’s broom. They glide down and come to a halt next to you, stepping down gracefully.
“How are Harry and Ron going to get out? They’d have to go right by Mr. and Mrs. Weasley’s room, unless Harry has his broom up there with him, but I think I saw it in the foyer.” says Hermione, looking at Fred worriedly.
“Well, err, I told them to climb down,” says Fred earnestly.
“What?!” says Hermione. “They’ll be loud as bison, besides probably breaking their necks.”
“It’s not my fault they’re too dumb to pass their apparation O.W.L.S! They’ll be fine.”
As he finishes his sentence, Ron’s window slides open and Harry’s head pops out. He lowers what appears to be a rope made of sheets and blankets tied together. Hermione’s brow furrows as she watches, helpless, while Ron artlessly slips one leg out the window, before even checking to see that the “rope” is nowhere near long enough to reach the ground. Ginny giggles, biting her lip when she sees Hermione’s distress.
“Do something!” Hermione hisses, nudging her. Ginny groans and soars over to boost Ron onto the back of her broom, going back to do the same for Harry.
“Shite! The firewhiskey,” you whisper, smacking your forehead. Everyone lets out a collective groan, but before you can send someone back up to hunt down the alcohol, Ginny opens her backpack, revealing the gleaming jug. Everyone cheers, but then quickly realizes that loudly cheering may have blown your cover. Fred and George scurry off into the brush and you all follow them down a lightly trod path through the countryside, eventually reaching the open bank of a large, murky pond. This is a spot you’ve never been to before, probably because it’s a fair stretch away from the house, and apparently from any civilization at all.
Hermione quickly conjures a large fire, creating a pocket of warmth in the chilly night air. You lean against a large rock and shiver when the cool stone brushes the back of your neck. Ginny pulls out the firewhiskey and hands it to Fred, who pops the cork, shouting with glee before knocking back a sip and passing it to George, who passes it to you. The familiar sickly sweet liquid burns your throat and warms your stomach, and you feel your (already barely existent) inhibitions begin melting away.
Before long, Ron suggests that you all play a game, and you run through your options: truth or dare, spin the bottle, a wizarding game you’ve never heard of, and hide and go seek. Hermione refutes hide and go seek on the basis of safety, and Fred refutes spin the bottle on the basis of the fact that four out of six of you are siblings. Not everyone brought their wands, so you can’t play the magic game, and you’re left with truth or dare as the apparent winner, which you were rooting for anyway, because you want to see what you can get the twins to do. It almost makes you wish Percy was here so you could put him in a compromising position, but knowing him, he’d find a way to make walking on hot coals boring.
“I’ll start, I’ll start!” you volunteer, looking around the circle. “My first victim will beeeee…” you look at Hermione, who cringes nervously, then spin around to point at Harry. “Harry Potter. What will it be, Mr. Potter, truth or dare?” you ask.
Harry shrugs. “Hmm.. I’ll do.. Dare, why not?” he replies.
“Alright Harry, I dare you tooooo.... Oh, easy. I dare you to smack Ron every time he says something you think is stupid tonight. And be honest, or we’ll smack you,” you say. The twins nod in agreement.
“That’s not fair! That’s barely a real dare!” protests Ron. You raise an eyebrow at Harry, who turns and gives his friend a good wallop.
“Alright Harry, your turn.”
You play for nearly an hour, all the while passing the bottle lazily between you, until everyone’s good and tipsy on the strong liquor. Several good dares are exchanged: Fred is dared to give you a lap dance, which he does with gusto and an uncomfortable amount of eye contact. You dare Ginny to race you across the pond and back, and you both strip down to your skivvies and plunge into the chilly water. Ginny wins, of course, but you just wanted an excuse for a swim. Fred lends you his cloak, patting it onto your shoulders to dry them before you pull your pants back on. George dares Ron to walk back to the house and get food, which he reluctantly agrees to after everyone bullies him into it. By the time he gets back with a basket of pastries and jam, you’ve transitioned to mainly truths, because the well of dares has run dry.
When it’s Hermione’s turn to ask Fred, she blushingly asks if he’s lost his virginity.
“What, do you all think I’ve snogged every girl we know without scaring? Have a little faith, please.”
“Clever, but that’s not an answer!” slurs Hermione, pointing at him and grinning. “Have you actually had sex before, or do you just talk a big game?”
“Well, have you?” you ask, laughing as he tries to bluster out an answer.
“”Course I have. Ask anybody. Everybody must think George and I are the male sluts of the century, the way you people talk.”
“Still not an answer!” you say, looking at him mischievously.
“How’s this for an answer, then?” he retorts, pulling you to his waist and kissing you on the lips melodramatically, throwing you up against the rock, practically fucking but for the clothes. What’s probably thirty seconds of kissing at most feels like an hour. Everyone goes “Oooooh!” and when he finally lets you go you’re flabbergasted, but you recover your senses.
“Point taken, then. Alright Freddie, your turn,” you say, straightening your clothes and trying not to look like you enjoyed that.
“I dare Hermione to let us play hide and seek, for fuck’s sake,” he says, lazily.
“Ugh! I might be drunk but I’m not letting anyone stumble around alone in the pitch black plastered out of your mind. Ask me a real question!”
“What if we weren’t alone?” Harry asks, looking around. “I mean, we could go in pairs or little groups. Like team hide and seek, basically.”
“I call Fred and George!” you cry, throwing your arms around their sweaty necks.
“Fine, but please be careful. And everyone should be on a team with at least one person with a wand,” says Hermione, who teams up with Ron. That leaves Harry and Ginny on the last team.
George produces his wand and casts an illumination spell.
“Not it!” You shout, immediately echoed by Ginny.
“Alright, we’ll count to 50” says Hermione, but Harry and George protest until they finally agree to 3 minutes.
Fred tears off into the woods and you and George follow, bushes thwacking you in the face, vines snagging at your ankles. You break through the brush into a field, panting, and stop for a break.
“Where are we going?” you ask, looking around. “And where are we?”
“No idea!” Fred says gleefully.
“What about over there?” George nods towards a patch of grass and trees down in a glenn. You lope down hill through high grass and crash to a halt in the stand of trees, crouching low. Fred huddles next to you and George clambers clumsily into one of the trees, flattening himself into one of its crooks.
You can feel your stomach churning after your run, but you manage to successfully push down the acrid taste rising in your throat. Above you, you hear George belch, and just manage to slip out of the way as he spits a pitiful glob of vomit to the ground.
“Oi, we’re down here, you lout,” hisses Fred, ducking.
“Look at the state of you,” you drawl, bumping into Fred as you readjust around George’s vomit. He groans from his spot up in the tree and lies back down sleepily. To your surprise, you feel the urge to pull Fred closer rather than pushing him away. The earthy smell of the forest floor calms your stomach, and you find your mind wandering to his lips, his hands on your waist and neck. Buzzing with drunken impulsivity, you wrap your arms around his slender waist and pull him to sit beside you. He looks surprised, but readily slouches against the tree trunk next to you. You can feel his chest rising and falling with each breath. The air is still and cool in that settled way characteristic of the night.
Overhead, you think you can hear George beginning to snore.
“Freddie-” you begin, but before you can say a word, his lips are on yours, his hands tangled in your hair. You push him down and roll over so that you’re straddling him, gripping his jaw in one hand as you kiss him, hard, then gently. His lips are softer and more relaxed than they were when he kissed you earlier, and his body less certain. There’s no false bravado in him now, and you bite his lip gently, your tongues barely batting together. You reach down to unzip his pants but he pulls back.
“Y/N- I- Look, I may have lied earlier,” he says, his face flush with desire and embarrassment. You look at him quizzically, your drunken mind not connecting all the dots.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I haven’t… done this before. I’ve only ever kissed. Although I’ve done quite a lot of that.” he says quietly. You blink.
“Oh. Oh! You total freak. Why go to all that trouble to convince everyone you have?”
“Have you considered that maybe I just wanted to kiss you?”
This shuts you up. He pulls you back down to kiss you again, this time on the cheek, on the forehead, the neck.
“Don’t do anything you don’t want to do,” you say carefully, brushing a bead of sweat from his forehead.
“No… no, I’m ready. I want this now,” he says, tugging at your shirt. You pull it off over your head and toss it into the grass, the game of hide and seek forgotten. Let the shirt be a warning flag to any nosy passerby. Fred kisses across your chest.
“Freddie, we’re drunk,” you remind him, your breathing growing heavier as his tongue flicks across your nipple.
“I want you,” he mumbles into the crook of your neck in between kisses. “I want you, I want you, I want you,” he says. You kiss him in reply, and move again to unzip his pants. You feel his hard member ready to burst out of his jeans, and it sends a thrill through you.
You had considered that you might one day wind up with Fred or George, and honestly, you had figured it would be on some less-than-sober whim like this, but you never really pictured it. You certainly never imagined Fred like this, innocent and tame, hoping for someone else to take the lead.
“Will you show me how?”
“Yes,” you breathe your reply into his mouth.
“Will you go slow?” he asks sweetly, his coy submissiveness sending tremors through your body.
“Yes. Come closer.”
In the morning, you groggily open your eyes at the sound of birds chirping. You sit up, your head throbbing, and look around. Above you and a few feet to your right, George is sleeping soundly on his belly in the flat convergence of an oak tree’s branches. To your left, shirtless and smeared with dirt, is Fred curled on top of his cloak, also fast asleep.
“Guess they gave up on finding us,” you mutter, running a hand through your hair to smooth it into place. You remember what happened last night well enough, although some parts are cloudier than others, and you don’t remember deciding to fall asleep at all. You suppose it just happened at some point. Your heart beats faster, wondering if you and Fred will be an item after this, or if he’ll want to keep it quiet, or if you just won’t talk about it. You’re not sure what you want, yet. It’s still purple pre-dawn in the countryside, the sun not quite peeking over the horizon yet.
You know you enjoyed yourself, and you adore Fred- as a friend, certainly. As something more? Maybe. You brush away your anxieties and trust that you’ll settle things when you’re less groggy. Suddenly, it dawns on you that you’ve got to get back to the house before Mr. and Mrs. Weasley wake up and notice your absence. You stand up as though the ground caught fire, kicking at Fred and shouting at George to get down.
You fetch your shirt from a nearby bush, and pluck a twig from Fred’s hair as he looks up, dazed.
“God, my head,” he says, squinting up at you. “What the hell time is it?”
“Never mind that, you’ll have worse than a headache if we don’t get back to the house by like, yesterday.”
“Merlin!” George exclaims, perking up and basically falling from his perch to the ground. Recovering he stands up, taking his surroundings in. “Hold on, what the hell happened to you, Fred? Where’s your shirt?”
“No time for all that, go!” you say, shoving George in the direction you suppose the house is in. You muster as fast a pace as you can and follow him, Fred scrambling to gather his cloak and tee shirt before catching up with you. With George’s back to both of you, you exchange a goofy grin and a wave of relief runs through you. He obviously doesn’t consider last night a mistake, either. You slip your hand into his and make your way into the breaking dawn.
I don’t knowwww what this is but I love this senbon user.
Genma x femreader
Part two here
Your feet land on the road a little ways away from the gate, jumping from the treetops and landing silently.
You’ve been gone for awhile, on a deep undercover mission that kept you away for a few years and you were ready to finally be home again.
You get to the closed gate and feel your heart skip when Genma appears in front of you
“State your name and business” he says and clicks his senbon against his teeth.
You place a hand on your hip, fingers messing with your headband around your waist as a belt as you smirk “I know I’ve been gone a while Genma, but I didn’t think I was that forgettable to you” you raise your hand and cover your heart “my heart actually hurts”
You watch the recognition enter his eyes as he smiles with the senbon in his teeth “y/n. It’s so good to see you” he says and pulls you into a hug. “You too Genma” you say into his neck, closing your eyes tight so you don’t cry.
“Sorry about the gate” he says as he closes it again behind you both “we’ve had some assassination threats” you say a soft oh and nod your head “no worries. I’m happy to be home I gotta tell you. I should find a place to stay” you scratch your neck and laugh softly “since all my things are in storage” you go to turn but he grabs your hand “can I find you later? To catch up?” You smile and nod “I’d love that”
After debriefing with the Hokage you found an inn to stay in not far from where your things were stored then you went to go buy some food and new clothes that weren’t from your mission.
You had a few bags in your hand as you walked the streets of the village, a small smile on your lips and a light heart as you familiarized yourself with your home town again.
“There you are” he says as he hops from the room of the buildings to standing next to you.
“Nice to see you again Genma” you said with a soft smile and a sparkle in your eye that make his heart race.
Even after all this time his feelings for you remain unchanged.
He takes the bags from your hands and offers you his elbow, which you take with a small laugh and a “thank you”
“Have you eaten yet?” You ask, looking up at him your chin brushing his shoulder. He smirks at the way his skin comes alive at your touch and the way his stomach fills with butterflies as you easy fall back into your old closer than just friends ways.
“No I haven’t. Where would you like to go?” You notice the way his eyes soften when he looks at you and the way his usual smirk seems more genuine. “Take me to your favorite place” you say and he laughs with a nod “you got it”
“I’m so glad this place is still here” you say as they place two bowls of pumpkin soup down on the table. “I’m pretty sure we’re still in business because of Genma here” the owner says from the back and you laugh “I bet. I’ve seen him put away a lot of pumpkin soup before” you wink at him as you blow softly across your soup to cool it down.
“Tell me about your mission” he asks as he takes another bite and you smirk “well. I guess it isn’t really classified anymore” you say and wipe your lips with a napkin
“I had to go undercover and infiltrate the growing army of rouge ninjas that were in the north” his eyes widen slightly, he’s heard stories about them and even tho they were a lesser version of the Akatsuki they were still a tough group.
“I went through the ranks until I was the right hand man of the head of the group who turned out to be a girl. She was an amazing person if she wasn’t so absolutely crazy.” You take another bite and he leans forward a little “that’s where you’ve been all these years? It makes sense as to why the missions involving them suddenly stopped” he says and scratches behind his neck
“After I made my way to the top, they were planning on wiping out the village hidden in the mist . I sent word back to the Hokage who told the Mizukage, I worked hand in hand with them to take down the entire army and now I’m here” you shrug and he’s looking at you with shocked eyes.
“What?” You ask with a laugh and he just chuckles “nothing I just.. I always just thought you’d be my cute little best friend from daycare” you laugh and run your hand through your hair
Before you can respond a member of the ANBU appears beside your table “the Hokage needs to see you both right away”
Your hands run down your face as you sigh deeply “so she survived and then escaped and is coming after me?” The Hokage nods “I’m placing Genma as your bodyguard and for now you’ll go into hiding, to one of the safe houses” you scowl, wanting to protest, to say how you can take care of yourself, but you honestly didn’t even know if it was the truth.
You nod once “yes, lord sixth”
Genma beside you tenses his jaw and nods once, he won’t lie, he’s excited to spend so much time with you, he just wishes it was with better circumstances.
“How long has it been? Since we were Chunin I think” he says as the gates close behind you
“Since we went on a mission together? Yeah since I was placed on your team because my team was all out of commission. You iced me out for the first day because you thought I was cute”
He gasps “I did not!”
You laugh and chase your head “yeah sure. So you ignored me but stared at me the entire time for the first day but then your excuse the second day was” you imitate his kid voice “I had something in my eye”
He can’t help but laugh with you, his cheeks dusting a little pink “it was true. I had something in my eye” he sticks with it and you just sigh and shake your head “yeah it was awkward 12 yr old feelings” you say back and he just scoffs, sticking to his original story.
You get to the safe house around nightfall, a small farm house on the outskirts of a smaller town that consisted of a small market and a couple shops, guessing that less than 200 people lived around here.
You flick the light switch and wait in the doorway as the lights flicker before staying on, a low light cast across a small living room with a hallway and an attached kitchen. Genma checks the house and secures it as you kick off your shoes and look through the kitchen.
“We will have to hit the market in the morning. Maybe we could go back to that ramen place we passed” you say as you meet him in the living room.
“There’s only one bedroom since were supposed to be acting as a couple, you can take the bed and I’ll take the couch” he says, twisting his senbon in his mouth and avoiding your eye as he tries to not imagine sharing a bed with you.
You laugh “that’s not fair though. How about we Rock Paper Scissors or thumb war or something else?” You can see the pink on his sheets and you’re pretty sure he’s thinking of the same thing you are, sleeping in the same bed.
“Yeah okay. Thumb war” he says with a nod, still not looking at you. He knows he could lose it easy and still give you to bed.
You cross the room to him and hold out your hand, he finally meets your eye as his finger slick with yours. His fingers were warm against your usual cold fingers and you could feel his calluses against your skin. “Ready?” You asks, eyes locked on his and a small smirk on your lips.
“Go!” You say and his longer thumb reaches for yours as you dodge it with a giggle, your left hand reaching out to hold his bicep as you dodge his thumb, he’s feigning trying to win until your thumb locks across his and for a second he forgets what he’s even doing, he’s too caught up in the way your eyes sparkle as you look at your thumb, your laughter that hasn’t changed since you were a kid. All those times you would joke together as kids and hanging out when you grew up. Meeting you again after your days in the ANBU, then seeing you again this morning, the way his heart has only beat for you his whole life.
He gasps softly when you squeal, looking up into his eyes with a grin “I win!” You say and his cheeks flush, your hand still on his arm and your fingers still locked with his, “congrats! You get the bed” he says, throat a little dry.
“Now let’s clean up and head to dinner” you say, dropping his hand. His hand feels empty without the feeling of your fingers against his but he swallows hard and shoves his hands in his pockets with a nod, pretending that your grin isn’t making his heart race.
There’s two bathrooms, one downstairs and one connected to the bedroom. You get ready in the bedroom bathroom and him in the other.
You know you’ll bathe later but for dinner you still want to look good. You’re supposed to sell that youre married to Genma so you dress like you would if you were going out with your husband.
You take off your headband and wash your face with cool water before putting on a little makeup and fixing up your hair. You change into a dark green dress that hits just above your knees. You spray a little perfume that you just bought before your mission, then head down the stairs.
You smile when you see him, sitting on the couch and twisting a kunai in his fingers as he waits.
“I have something for you” you say with a smirk as your reach the bottom of the steps.
“What is it?” He asks and stores his kunai before looking up at you and gasping softly, his eyes widening as he takes you in, his eyes slowly moving down your body before landing back on your face
He stands and walks to you “you look good” he says in a whisper and swallows hard, his cheeks blushing and warm.
“Thank you. So do you” you say and nod as you look him over, he’s changed out of anything that would give him away as a ninja. He’s wearing a dark shirt and dark pants that you realize are just a little bit fancier than you would have guessed he’d own. You look nice, like a couple that would blend in with the village.
You hold out your hand and open your palm, showing two matching rings “whataya say Genma? Will you fake marry me?” You smile softly and he takes the ring from your palm “I do” he says with a smirk and you chuckle as you slide the ring down your left hand finger.
“One more thing” you say and reach up, untying his headband and running your hand through his hair as you fix his headband hair. You hand it to him and he smiles softly “now we look like any young couple who moved to the country” he puts his headband in his bag and then held the door open to you “shall we?” He asks and you nod, taking his arm with a smile.
ꕥone month laterꕥ
You’re weeding your garden you have out front, the small sprouts bringing joy to your heart. So far they haven’t been able to find her so for now you’re still stuck here.
Genma is fixing a leak in the roof, the sound of his hammer reaching your ears as you wipe your dirty hands on your apron. You place the weeds in the compost pile at the back edge of the yard as Genma climbs down the ladder.
“All fixed?” You ask with a smile, your sundress flowing against your legs in the breeze and he feels his heart hammer against his ribs. You looked like the prettiest housewife he could almost picture this being his real life.
“All fixed” he says with a grin, a spare nail still in his teeth instead of his usual senbon. He had sweat lining his forehead and his hair tied back in a low bun, his face looks a little sun kissed and you couldn’t stop your mind from wandering to imagining him as your househusband.
Your cheeks feel warm and you wipe your hands on your apron again before taking it off and walking up to him, folding it and using a clean space to dab his forehead “let’s go inside, I’ll make something light for lunch” he clears his throat, grateful for the sunburn on his cheeks that he knows won’t show his blush. “Sounds good” he says with a semi strained voice, trying not to show how flustered you made him.
That evening, after dinner and bathing, you head downstairs to find Genma but pause when he’s nowhere to be found.
You find the door open but before heading out you grab his sweatshirt he had over the side of the couch and throw it over your head.
You take a few steps off the porch and hear a soft whistle, pulling your attention to the roof. You feel your heart skip when you turn and spot him laying against the roof, the moonlight glistening off his usual senbon he still used at the house.
You appear beside him and sit down, pulling your knees up to your chest and tucking them inside your sweatshirt.
“Isn’t it funny that we went from being apart for years to being thrown together for who knows how long?” His voice was a whisper but it felt loud because of how alone and quiet you where on this little farm.
“I’m sorry you got dragged into this. You probably have a girlfriend back at the village who’s gonna hate me when we get back” you say as you rest your forehead on your knees
Yes you’ve lived together for a month but you haven’t brought up relationships because then you’d have to admit the feelings you had for him.
He laughs and leans up, his elbows around his knees “no ones gonna hate you” he says and you meet his eye
“So then she’s really nice? That’s good. I always hoped you’d end up with someone nice” your voice was strained and he tilts his head, his tongue turning the senbon
“No” he says and you raise your eyebrows “so she’s mean? I didn’t expect you to be ..” he cuts you off with a laugh “no I mean.. no she”
Your eyes widen a little then you laugh “ohhh so you have a boyfriend. Well if you’re happy that’s..” he groans and falls back, his arms above his head exasperated.
He takes his senbon from his mouth and then lays his arm back down, looking up at the stars as he says in a monotone voice “I’m sorry I should have made it more clear. I’m not dating anyone”
You feel your cheeks heat up as your soul fills to the brim with embarrassment. “Oh”
You wait until your face cools off before you lean back and look up at the sky with him. You look up at the stars for just a moment before you decide to make a move and adjust your body, scooting up to lay your head against his arm.
“I’m glad” you whisper and pause for a moment “that no one is going to hate me when we get back”
You were glad he wasn’t dating anyone. Glad that he was single and that your feelings have an option to be reciprocated.
His heart was racing in his throat, his fingers holding his senbon in a vice grip as your hair tickles the skin on his arm.
Over this last month all of his feelings from childhood had returned with a vengeance. He thought that maybe they were the same feelings but as the days progressed he’s learned how much stronger they have become for you. How he’s been desperately yearning to kiss you every night here.
The way your hair is crazy in the mornings, the way you yawn and rub your eyes as you drink coffee, the way your eyes sparkle in the sun as you work in the yard, these little sides of you that he feels lucky to be witnessing.
He loves the way the house smells like your shampoo after you bathe, the way you laugh at his jokes even if they aren’t very funny but your laughs are always genuine.
The way you hold his hand and kiss his cheek when you go to town makes his heart race every time, he won’t ever get used to the feeling. He’s a ninja but how hard he’s tried to dig out all his feelings and do away with them, he can never seem to do it. You’ll give him one of those looks where he feels like he’d do anything for you, your smile and the way your eyes soften when they see him, and he can’t do it. He knows this is an act but he can’t help but wish it was real.
“Y/n I need to tell you something” he says and as you turn to look up at him, you sense chakra. He’s caught it just a moment before you and he’s pulling you to his chest, throwing his senbon. the sound of it hitting a kunai making your palms sweat as you quickly get your shit together.
“It’s her” you say and then she appears on the ground, looking up at you both with her hands out and a smile.
“I’m just here to talk” she says and you feel a chill down your spine “you don’t talk, Mina! We both know that” you shout back and she just laughs.
Genma goes to attack and you watch as it goes in slow motion, one moment he’s throwing a kunai and flying through the air, the next he’s pinned to the ground by another Ninja who was hidden in the ground, popping up from your garden and holding him fast. A little part of your heart twinges with sadness for your baby garden.
You move into the defensive, not knowing what to do next since you didn’t have any weapons with you expect for your jutsu. You didn’t what to do, Genma was trapped and you had to fight her with no weapons and who knows how many people she had in hiding.
“I’m seriously here to talk so you can come down now” she says with an excited lilt “don’t do it!” Genma shouts but it’s cut off by the sound of his agonized groaning “i think you should do it!” She sings and you don’t hesitate in jumping to the ground and walking through the dirt path towards her
“Take me and let him go” you say and she laughs hard, wiping away tears, “how about I kill you first and make him watch” she says and then immediately throws a handful of Kunai your way.
You gasp and dodge them easily, not seeing her move through the dark and and cutting your arm with the kunai in his hand.
“The ritual is compete” she says with an insane laugh and you feel your body become frozen, paralyzed.
Your eyes look to her and notice how her skin has changed to black, covered in white symbols where bones would be. “She’s like Hidan” Genma says in shock as you watch her cackle in front of you, her arms out wide with the kunai still in her hand.
“Do you know how much trouble I went through to find you?” She asks and then brings the Kunai down into her thigh making you gasp when your thigh starts to bleed from the deep slice.
“Don’t worry tho, I’ll make sure to miss all your vital spots until we’re done talking”
Your heart is pounding with fear. There isn’t much you can do right now, you know you can’t get out of this and Genma is detained. You’re going to die.
“I’m sorry Mina” you say between deep gasps of air through the pain “I was just following orders”
She cackles and you can feel her hatred coming form her in waves. The Kunai comes to her neck and you watch blood trickle down the side of her skin before you even felt it start to run down your own.
You gasp when she slowly pushes the knife deeper, the wound in your neck flowing more. “Maybe I’m done talking now” she whispers out and goes eerily quiet as she stares at the blood coming from your neck.
“No.. stop!” Genma is fighting against the other ninja, struggling but not getting anywhere.
“Genma” you whisper out but he stills when he hears your voice “it’ll be okay” you say, feeling your eyes sting but refusing to cry in front of her.
“Mina just go. Why are you doing this? You could run. You could go live the life you’ve always wanted and hoped for. The little farm you told me about. You can go do that you have been given this chance you don’t need to use it for revenge. You can be happy”
“Shut up!” She shouts at you, her eyes overflowing with tears
“I wanted that life with you!” she says through gritted teeth and you gasp softly, your heart racing. You never knew that’s how she felt for you.
“But if I can’t have you” she says, eyes wide and crazy, the tears suddenly stopping and turning to crazy chuckles “then no one can” she finishes her sentence in a quiet calm voice that’s even more eerily sounding than her laughter.
She raises her arm back and then screams as she brings it down to her throat with all the force she can muster! Your eyes widen in shock and you gasp, expecting to have it be your final moment but feeling relief flood your body when you hear the words from Shikamaru in the dark “shadow possession, complete”
Turns out Shikamaru and a few ANBU had been tracking her for a week. They would have caught her sooner but Kiba was on a different mission and couldn’t help.
The fight was quick after that, you don’t really remember most of it. Once Genma was free he was by your side and holding gauze to your leg while you held one to your neck.
“Thank you” you whisper to him as you sit in the dirt, watching as he dresses your wound.
“This is all my fault. I let my guard down. I was thrown off by seeing you in my sweatshirt. You look so good I got distracted. I’m sorry I let you get hurt” his eyes were on his hands and your leg as he finishes tying the bandages, you’re pretty sure he doesn’t even know what he just confessed to.
Your hands take his into your own, the wound on your neck stopped bleeding and isn’t more than a scratch.
“Genma” you say softly and wait until he meets your eye. His senbon was back in his teeth and you heard the gentle grinding sound as he bit down against it.
You reach up and cup his jaw “I worry about your teeth” you joke and he rolls his eyes, relaxing his jaw before looking back to your eye.
“We should get going. You should see a doctor about that wound” Shikamaru said, coming back from taking care of Mina and her accomplice and sending them off with a couple ANBU.
Your eyes don’t leave Genma’s but you drop your hands “okay. My leg isn’t too bad so I can pack up my things real quick. Could you help me?” Genma nods immediately and picks you up into his arms bridal style, carrying you back towards the house.
As you stand on your good leg at the bathroom sink, Genma goes to clean up his things. A quick sweep of the home since you kept it spotless normally in preparation.
You look at yourself in the mirror and sigh, brushing your hair behind your shoulder as you look at the cuts on your neck.
“Do you think they’ll scar?” You ask when he appears in the doorway, his pack over a shoulder.
“I doubt it. They aren’t very deep. If they do scar it will be gone in a year” you scowl and look away, going to grab your small bag if things to add to your pack on the bed.
You go to hop your way out but he drops his bag and puts his arm around your waist, easily taking your weight as he helps you back to the bed.
“Shikamaru will take my bag, I’ll carry you back” he says and doesn’t wait for you to say anything, just turns and crouches, waiting for you to climb up.
You chuckle “I’ll be fine” you say and he clicks his senbon before leaning back and grabbing your calves, gently pulling you so you lose balance with a gasp and fall into him.
“We’re ready” Genma says, not even ten minutes after Shikamaru said it was time to leave. You’re scowling but holding on to his shoulders tight.
Genma throws his pack to him and he catches it in silence, putting over his shoulder. “Let’s go”
His hands are firm against your thighs as he carries you and you notice how he never forgets about your wound, is always gentle with you whenever he has to adjust or move you.
“It’s gonna be weird not living with you” you admit with a small chuckle and his hands squeeze your legs gently “oh yeah. I bet you’ll miss having fresh coffee made for you in the morning and never having to wash a dish” you laugh and playfully slap his shoulder “and you’ll miss my cooking every meal!” He chuckles and nods “you know it. You’re a queen of the kitchen” you feel your cheeks warm and are grateful that he can’t see.
“We’re here” Shikamaru says and you feel your stomach fill with relief until it gets taken over by worry when you realize you still don’t have anywhere to stay. Shikamaru heads off to talk to the Hokage as Genma brings you to the hospital to get looked at.
“I’ll be here when you’re done” he says as he sets you on the exam table and your eyes widen “you will be?” He raises his eyebrows with a smirk “of course I will be” you feel your cheeks warm, the mission was over so you just expected him to go his way as you go yours. You nod, feeling your eyes sting again with your feelings as you smile shyly “thank you Genma”
A few medical ninjas heal your leg up and disinfect and bandage up your neck when you exit the room, true to his word, Genma is sitting on the chair across the hall with his head relaxed against the wall behind him. His eyes are closed and you can tell he’s sleeping, his senbon hanging in the edge of his lips.
You crouch in front of him and smile softly as you look him over. His messy hair and his recreational clothes, he was missing his headband still and has dirt on his cheeks.
You reach up and softly run your fingers through his hair, smiling when his eyes flutter open. “Good morning sleepy head” you say softly and he takes a deep inhale, a soft smile on his lips as he meets your eye. “Good morning beautiful” he says and rubs his eyes.
“Wanna get some breakfast?” You ask, fingers still moving slowly through his soft hair. “God yes” he says and you laugh, standing with a groan before offering him your left hand, which he takes without hesitation and stands.
“How’s your leg?” He asks, lacing his fingers together with yours and making your heart flutter. “It’s fine. Nothing major was hit, should just be a bruise now.” You want to ask why he’s holding your hand. Want to point out how he doesn’t have to do that anymore since this is your village and you’re not pretending anymore, but you don’t. You don’t ask. You just savor the feeling knowing it’s probably the last time.
You yawn hard as you sit across from him at the table, waiting for your food to be delivered as you sit quietly with him. You both looked exhausted, exactly like you’ve been traveling all night. You look up from the picture on the wall you were zoned out staring at and feel your cheeks warm when you catch him looking at you.
“What?” You ask with a small chuckle and he just smiles “nothing. Just looking” he says and it makes your heart flutter. “Would have thought you looked enough over the last month” he chuckles “not nearly enough if I’m being honest” he admits quietly and you chuckle at the softness.
“Stay with me” he says as he takes a bit of his pumpkin soup. “What?” You ask, choking on your own spit.
“Stay with me while you find your own place. Your stuff is still in storage right?” You feel your cheeks warm as you wipe off your mouth “yeah that’s true but I don’t want to impose I can just stay at the inn” he shakes his head “no. Stay with me. I have more than enough room” you laugh “I’m not gonna be able to change your mind Huh?” He shakes his head with a small smile “I insist”
He takes another bite of his soup and sighs “it’s not as good as yours” he says a little sadly and for some reason it fills your heart full of pride. “I’m sorry I ruined your favorite meal” you say and he laughs, running his hands through his hair and sticks his senbon back in his teeth. “It just means I’ll need you to make it for me now” he says and you laugh “anytime. But just for you” you say back and you feel as if your heart could burst.
After your meal he takes your hand again in his, lifting it and using his thumb to twist the fake wedding band “I guess we should take these off Huh?”
You nod “yeah probably. Since the mission is over” he sighs and slips yours off before he takes his off and puts them both in his pocket before he takes your hand again, your pack over his shoulder.
“We don’t have to hold hands anymore either. And I could take my pack..” your voice sounds as sad as you feel but you doubt you’d even be able to hide it.
“Oh” he says softly “yeah. You’re right” he hesitates for just a moment before dropping your hand and shoving his roughly into his pocket. He doesn’t give your bag to you though, which makes you smirk, your hand moving behind your back to hold your elbow.
The first night at his place was nice, you insisted on taking his couch and he couldn’t find a good enough excuse to change your mind. You helped clean off the dust and air out the apartment before he went out to stock up on fresh groceries as you shower.
When you get out the shower you wander around his bedroom, more or less snooping. You open his closet and hum in approval at the collection of comfortable clothing he has as well as his nice fancier clothing. You take one of the comfy jackets off a hanger and throw it on before you continue your trek through his apartment.
His apartment was spacious even though it was one bedroom. His room was large and open, a bed in the middle with amazing light when the sunrises. It has a couch at the end of the bed, a large bathroom, and decent closet. It had a sliding glass door and a small balcony that had a chair and table.
You sat on the side of the bed and opened the top drawer of the bedside table.
Exactly what you expected from him, a kunai and a box of condoms that were a particularly larger size than you would have assumed he would have.
“You big snoop” he says with evident laugh in his voice as he catches you with condoms in your hand.
You gasp and flail, the box hitting the headboard of his bed and falling behind you on the bed as you just sigh and hide your face in your hands.
“That was funny. You shoulda seen your face” he says with a laugh and you just keep your face hidden, your cheeks hot under your palms.
“God Genma you scared me” you say and he just laughs and sits beside you on the bed.
With a low groan, he leans slowly behind you and grabs the box of condoms. “If you wanted to know what size condoms I use, you could have just asked” he said with a twirl of his senbon and you let out a squeak that makes his skin tingle.
You decide to try and tip the scale of his cockiness so you quickly move, throwing your leg across him and pushing him down to the bed with your hands.
You lean in close to his ear and his hands move to grip your thighs “would you have told me... or shown me?” You ask, teeth connecting to his ear as you bite him gently, smirking when his breath hitches.
You lean up, sliding your hands down his chest and looking down at him with a smile for a moment before you take his senbon from his mouth and stick it between your teeth before you wink and slide from his lap to your feet. Walking out of the door with a satisfied hum and a swing of your hips.
You walk down the hallway into his spacious and homey living room, your toes appreciating the soft rug as you cross the living room to the dining room and kitchen, towards the brown paper sacks he must have left on the table.
“Oooh you got melon. I love melon.” You say with a smirk, twisting the senbon around with your tongue as you make eye contact with him as he comes across the room.
“I know you love it” he says and stands beside you, placing his hand on your low back as he leans down and takes the end of his senbon into his teeth and you smile, letting him take it from your mouth.
You know the condom moment made the air more tense between you, but you really liked it. It felt real, like the mission was just a show but now this, this!, is real flirting! Real feelings!
“That wasn’t very nice what you did in there” he says and you laugh “I’m sorry Genma. Did I get you worked up just to leave? How rude of me.” You say as you cut the melon.
“Maybe don’t dish out the teasing if you can’t handle it back” you say and offer him a small bite of melon. He rolls his eyes and leans down but instead of popping it into his mouth you quickly put it in your own with a grin
“Hey!” He says and you chuckle “what are ya going to do about it? Huh?” You tease and he places a hand on your hip and pulls you to his chest, a little squeak leaving your lips making him smirk.
“I wanted a taste” he says his voice low and his eyes playful. you smile, your hand on his chest can feel his racing heart and you reach up, taking his senbon as you say “then take one” his lips hitting yours less than a second later.
sacred rituals
for @kanejweek day 5: love (atypical affection & domesticity)
pairing: Kaz Brekker x Inej Ghafa
rating: T (they're talking about murder)
set a few weeks pre-canon so only minimal spoilers!
read it on ao3 here
Kaz rarely spent time on the main floor of the Slat unless he had to. He didn’t want the Dregs getting the wrong idea; he wasn’t their friend. Kaz Brekker wasn’t anyone’s friend.
Instead, he spent most of the time in his office, when he wasn’t walking the uneven streets of the Barrel. It was quiet, far removed from the raucous laughter and fighting and close quarters that generally filled the Slat. It was mostly warm, and mostly dry. Generally, everyone left him alone, and that was the way he preferred it.
Almost everyone.
The fact of the matter was this: Kaz preferred solitude, but he always kept his window open. Even on cold nights, when the wind chilled to the bone. Nights like this one. It was a kind of standing invitation, although he would never admit that. It was an invitation that was nearly always accepted.
He glanced down at the papers on his desk, and he felt the air shift almost imperceptibly.
“Hello Inej,” Kaz said, not looking up from his ledgers. The Wraith moved silently into the room, tugging down her hood.
“How do you do that?” she asked, not for the first time. His eyes flicked to hers before looking away.
“A magician never reveals his secrets,” he said. “Now, what did you find?”
She didn’t respond right away. Instead, she shrugged off her cloak and moved closer to the fire, stoking it from where it had burned down. Kaz pointedly did not pay attention to the way the firelight danced along her hair, the graceful movements of her hands as she warmed them.
“I checked every inch of the washroom, and I don’t have the faintest idea how they pulled it off,” Inej said. “It’s more secure than most mercher safes, from what I’ve seen. No trick tiles, no removable mirror, no vents. The only way in or out is the drain pipes, and I doubt anyone’s managed to train rat assassins.”
“If it was possible, I’d have done it by now,” Kaz replied. Inej snorted, and Kaz’s heart stuttered briefly.
“So that rules out rodent killers, then,” she said wryly. “Floor plan?”
“No trap doors, no secret entrances. No way in or out other than the front door.”
“The locked front door,” Inej finished. “You’d have to walk through walls to get in there. Maybe we’re looking for something otherworldly. Ketterdam’s got no shortage of ghosts.”
“None of whom can hold a knife,” he pointed out. “Present company excepted, of course.”
“Got any theories?” she asked.
He shrugged. “A thousand. None likely.”
“Tell me,” she said. She settled down next to the fire and took out her knives, one by one. There were three new ones, he noted. Soon enough he wouldn’t have to worry about her being injured at all — she was effectively wearing chainmail. Not that he spent time worrying that she’d be injured.
Kaz unfurled the floor plan on his desk and motioned for her to come look. Inej only raised a dark eyebrow.
“I’m half-frozen, Kaz. I’m not getting up until I thaw out,” she said.
“I don’t pay you to relax,” he replied, but he moved over to the fire and set the blueprints down between them. Inej leaned forward, tugging the paper towards her. Her eyebrows knitted together as she looked more closely.
“Where were the guards positioned?” she asked.
“Here, and here.” Kaz used a pencil to mark down the locations. “The main event was taking place here, and there were people with a view of the door here, here, and over there.” He sketched out the lines of sight, and made a note of the guard rotation.
“Whoever it was, they certainly didn’t make it easy for us,” she murmured.
"I doubt they had us in mind when they made the plan," he said dryly.
"Do you share your rapier wit with everyone, or am I the only one that has to suffer it?" she asked, not looking up from the blueprints.
“I notice you haven't offered any suggestions," he said. "Giving up already, Wraith?”
Her eyes met his, holding his gaze for a moment. “If I figure it out first, I expect waffles.”
He couldn’t help the wry smile that flickered across his face. “Dream on, Inej.”
She had perfected the art of silence, and she didn’t make a sound as she looked over the blueprints. The only sounds Kaz could hear were the gentle crackle of the fire and muffled fighting in the distance, filtering in through the open window. He looked everywhere in the room except at her.
“Alright,” she said at last. “Venomous snakes.”
He must have heard her wrong. “Venomous snakes?”
“Trained venomous snakes. Send them up through the drain pipes, they bite the victim, and then they’re well on their way before anyone’s the wiser.”
“There were no bites reported by my source,” Kaz said.
“That doesn’t mean there weren’t any. You know the coroners of Ketterdam aren’t renowned for their attention to detail. And if someone paid them to look the other way…” she let the sentence hang in the air a moment.
“Corruption and bribery? Awfully cynical of you,” he drawled. “What ever would your Saints say?”
She scoffed. “Moral posturing? From you?”
“Me? I’m a pillar of the community. Never set a foot wrong in my life,” he said, entirely deadpan. The look on her face was something that he might well treasure for years.
“Do you think I’m right or not?” she asked exasperatedly. Kaz shook his head, running a hand through his uneven hair to hide the small smile on his face. He realized with a jolt that he was having fun. It wasn’t a feeling he was familiar with.
“All the pressure coming down from the top brass on this one, I doubt that kind of detail would be left out,” he said.
“And what’s your brilliant suggestion, Kaz?” she shot back. Good question, he thought.
“Easy. They bribed the guards and re-locked the door on the way out.” As he said it, he knew that it was weak. A rookie tactic, not something you’d pull to assassinate a high-ranking politician.
“Too risky,” Inej said, confirming his own thoughts. “Too many people there, and there’s no guarantee the guards wouldn’t sell them out. Like you said, too much pressure from the top brass.”
“I’m open to other ideas,” he replied, crossing his arms. Inej shrugged.
“Maybe he killed himself?”
“No weapons found. It’s like you’re not taking this seriously.”
“Still better than ‘they bribed all the guards and re-locked the door at a crowded political event,’” she said, in a passable impersonation of his voice.
They tossed ideas back and forth, each more unlikely than the last. Inej cleaned her knives, quietly setting each down next to her. The fire slowly burned down, casting long shadows across his office. At some point, Inej went to grab some food from the kitchen downstairs. She brought a mug of hot, bitter coffee and set it down next to him.
“Why, thank you, Inej,” she said, in that same rough impersonation of his voice. “How considerate of you to enable my caffeine addiction. So thoughtful and kind of you, I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Why would I bother thanking you when you do it for me?” Kaz asked dryly. Inej flashed a rude gesture in his direction before tucking into her dinner.
“It has to have been a Grisha,” Kaz said thoughtfully.
“I’m eating, Kaz, wait a minute,” Inej said around a mouthful of food. She looked pointedly at the second plate she’d brought up. “And it wouldn’t do you any harm to eat something other than coffee.”
Kaz narrowed his eyes at her, but he picked up the food all the same. They were quiet for a few minutes. When she’d finished, Inej shut her eyes and leaned back against the wall. There was a pause, long enough that Kaz began to wonder if she’d fallen asleep.
“That’s not how Grisha work,” she said at last.
“We’ve ruled out every other option,” Kaz argued.
“If Nina or Jesper could pull off something like this, we’d know about it,” she replied.
“And they’re the experts?”
“Certainly more than you are.”
“...I suppose.”
Inej raised an eyebrow, a faint smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “Is Kaz Brekker admitting that I’m right?”
“Don’t push your luck, Wraith,” he warned. Her smile widened, and Kaz felt dizzy looking at her. He focused on his too-bitter coffee instead. He heard her let out a sigh.
“I don’t like this, Kaz,” she murmured. “If there’s someone this dangerous out there, I want to know who they are and what they're after.”
He risked a glance at her. The candlelight haloed her face in a way that bordered on angelic. He wondered — not for the first time — if her hair was as soft as it looked.
“I'm sure we'll find out. Someone with this kind of power won’t stop at one hit. I know I wouldn’t.” His voice was calm, but she was right. Anyone that could walk through walls was a very real threat, if only because they were competition.
“Should I go back to have a second look?” she asked. Kaz shook his head.
“If there was a way to crack this, we would’ve figured it out. The truth will come out sooner or later. This city leaks information like a sieve.”
They wouldn’t learn how it had been done for a few weeks. But by then, of course, they had other things to worry about.
hi heres me projecting a sad thingy on steve. he secretly has a BIG thing for being called annoying, throughout his entire childhood his parents werent afraid of saying he was annoying or a bother, his friends growing up didnt hold back either, nancy said it too, even when she meant it in a cute way it still hurt. then the first time billy said it, except Billy was the only one who was able to catch the sudden switch, the switch from happy loud steve to quiet and dull.
“-and that’s when Tommy H. tried to pass the ball to George, but he wasn’t looking at it hit him in the head, and George started crying, and Tommy had to write him a note and now he can’t play outside during recess all week.” Steve was swinging his legs under the dinner table, sitting with his parents as they ate quietly.
He was recounting the daily second grade stories, pushing mushy vegetables around his plate.
His parents kept passing looks back and forth, looks Steve didn’t quite understand.
“And George doesn’t like Tommy, so I think that he-”
“Steven, I would like to enjoy my meal in peace, please.” His dad didn’t even look over at him.
“Uh, okay. Sorry, Dad.” He set his fork down, suddenly didn’t want to bother pretending eating his veggies. “May I be excused?” It was easier to simply retreat, go play in his room for the rest of the night.
Steve doesn’t like the way his dad looks at him sometimes.
It makes him feel bad inside. His dad simply waved a hand.
Steve took his plate into the kitchen, carefully placing it on the counter.
“He’s such a bother sometimes. Going on about the other children like it matters.”
“Richard, he’s a child.”
“And I don’t want him to grow into an adult that thinks it’s okay to annoy me people to death.”
Steve didn’t know what annoy means.
He asks his teacher the next day.
“To annoy someone means to irritate them. To bother them and make them angry.”
So, he irritated his father. He bothered him to the point where he was angry.
Steve didn’t speak the next night.
Or the next.
-
“Tommy, come on.”
Steve was not above whining.
“I wanna try it.”
Tommy had snuck a beer out of his dad’s stash in the fridge in the garage.
Tommy and Carol had each tried a sip, grimacing at the taste.
“I don’t thin you’re ready for it, Stevie. Still acting like a baby.”
They were fourteen, going into high school at the end of summer.
“Man, I am not. Just let me try it. I gotta get used tot he taste before we start going to parties.”
“No one’s gonna invite you to parties if you’re this annoying.”
The words stung, but Tommy passed him the beer while he said them, grinning lazily.
The beer tasted like shit.
Steve couldn’t discern it from the sour taste in his mouth that word left.
Annoying.
-
“Nancy,” Steve sang.
He was laying on her bed, his head flopped over the side, looking at her upside down. “Nancy.”
“Steve, I’ve gotta finish this.”
“Nancy, that essay’s due in like, a week.”
“I’ve got to finish this draft. Mrs. Lorraine said she’d read over it tomorrow and give me any pointers.” Steve rolled his eyes.
“You don’t need any pointers. You know she’s just gonna tell you it’s perfect.”
She was quiet.
“C’mon, Nance. Just lay with me for a little while. It’s been such a shitty week. Did I tell you my parents came home?”
“Yes. A few times.”
“I just always ask them to call first. If’ they called before going to the airport, I’d have like, a day or so, or at least a few hours before they get here depending on where they are. But they never do and they get on me about the house being a mess when it’s not, I’ve just left like, a pair of shoes out or something and-”
“Steve, I have to finish this. God, you can be so annoying sometimes.”
The words hit Steve like ice.
He sat up quickly, tugging on his shoes from next to the bed, yanking his sweater back on.
“I’m just gonna go then. Annoy my parents at home.” She didn’t say anything.
He rolled his eyes.
-
“Bill, where are you goin’?”
Billy was trying to get himself out of bed, gonna go make them both some coffee.
“I need some fuckin’ caffeine. Don’t know if you realized this, I didn’t get much sleep last night.”
Steve stretched lazily, finally letting Billy slid out from under the covers and pull on a pair of shorts from the floor.
He was smiling lazily, looked so perfect in the soft light of morning.
“Bring me a cup?”
“Yeah, Baby.”
“With a little bit of cream, and two scoops of sugar and-”
“I know how you take it, Pretty Boy.”
“And would you do some toast, too? I’ve got the good jam in the fridge, that fresh raspberry stuff from the old couple down the street. Will you do sourdough? It’s in he pantry, not the breadbox, and just a little bit of that Amish butter and then a layer of jam-” Billy flopped onto the bed, letting his weight press into Steve.
“I got an idea. You could come make yourself your high maintenance toast before I get annoyed to death.”
Billy meant it cute.
As cute as he can mean things while still making fun of Steve.
His idea was to get Steve in the kitchen with him. They could turn on the little radio down there and make breakfast together. It would be nice.
But it was alarming.
He was watching Steve’s face as he said it, and the second he let slip annoyed to death, Steve’s eyes went blank.
He stopped talking, smiling benignly up at Billy.
“What’s up?” Steve just shook his head. “No, something’s wrong, I can tell.”
“Nothing’s wrong. I’m fine.”
Steve’s words were clipped.
“You’re not fine. Tell me what’s wrong? What’d I do?”
“You didn’t do anything. I just-” he sighed. “I know I can be annoying sometimes. I’m working on it.”
“Why?”
“Because, because,” Steve wasn’t looking at him, “because it sucks, being around someone that just makes you mad because they won’t shut up.”
“Baby, you never make me mad. I’m sorry I said that, it was a joke. I don’t actually think you’re annoying. I just, I thought maybe we could make breakfast together.” His cheeks were hot, admitting that to Steve.
Billy doesn’t think it’ll matter how long they’re together, he’ll always get flustered admitting his feelings, or even getting close to doing so.
“No, Billy. It’s fine. I’ll try to keep it in mind. When to shut my mouth.”
“Steve, I fucking never want you to shut your mouth. I want you to talk to me forever and ever. I wanna hear about your fucking toast every single morning. I wanna hear about your day every night, and I wanna hear what pisses you off, and what makes you sad, and what makes you happy. Never stop talking to me, okay? Just love hearing your voice.”
“I, alright.” Steve’s eyes were bright again, but he still looked unsure.
“Come downstairs. Tell me about the fuckin’ Amish butter and why in the hell you have it.”
“It’s hand churned.”
“Yeah? Why’s that make it special?”
Steve appraised Billy.
He tried to keep his face open, tried to make sure Steve knew he wanted to know.
“It just makes it taste better. I think it’s because they use really fresh butter milk. I get it at the farmer’s market and the woman that sells it says they have a farm. They have goat cheese, too, and I’ve always wanted to try it because they have ones made with different herbs, and they all look so good.”
Billy was still on top of Steve, watching him intently as he spoke.
It made Steve warm. Washed out that sour feeling in his throat.
Because Billy wanted to hear him.
And Steve doesn’t know anybody that’s ever wanted that.
