3. Jealousy issues?

I think maybe young-Toph might've been jealous of Suki, simply because she was teen with a crush on a guy she couldn't have. But once she and Sokka are actually a couple, she has no real trust issues. Even without her deception detection, she knows that Sokka is a loyal guy. Maybe lots of girls flirt with him, but I think she'd be more likely to laugh it off than get upset. 'He's mine, deal with it' *sticks her tongue out*

I could see Sokka being more likely to get jealous if someone else showed an interest in Toph, but it would be a very one-sided thing. I don't think Toph would do anything to make him *feel* jealous. She doesn't play games like that. Sokka's issue would be insecurity, not lack of trust.

8. Have an AU thought? (someone else asked this one so I'll copy/paste XD)

Most of my Tokka AUs involve them living happily ever after lol. As opposed to the doomed-canon-compliant-relationship path that I am also addicted to. I don't really have anything specific in the AU vein (like modern or things like that), but I do enjoy some good fluff where they figure their shit out and learn to communicate. Usually they have a few oopsie kids because they're animals >:)

10. How do they deal with the other’s family?

Lao and Poppy do not like Sokka. They're uppity elites and would probably be pretty racist towards a 'Water Tribe savage'. Sure, they can be civil if it doesn't matter, but him preventing their only daughter from marrying in their circle? Unforgivable. They stubbornly maintain that they could've 'rehabilitated' her into what they wanted, if only Sokka hadn't come along and ruined her.

Hakoda isn't *super* close to Toph (she hates going to the SWT) but has a good opinion of her and thinks she's a good match for Sokka. He knows Sokka needs a strong woman to keep his head on straight. And he's always known that Sokka would want bigger and better things than staying in the south pole his whole life, so it's no surprise to him that he would prefer to stay in Republic City for most of adulthood.

27. Who brings home an illegal pet?

While I feel like the obvious answer is Sokka, I think he'd be much more likely to get a pet as an impulse purchase after walking past a pet store.

But Toph...

One day, she raids the hideout of a triad member and finds a bunch of exotic animals. While waiting for animal control, she bonds with a particularly pitiful pygmy leopard fox with three legs. After telling it her troubles, she sneaks it out of the hideout.

You know what? I’m going to do both.

Claudia

How I feel about this character: TV CLAUDIA IS THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST. I’ll be honest, book!Claudia kind of weirded me out conceptually, especially the part where she and Louis are kind of in love but she still looked like a little kid? I also read Interview with the Vampire at the age when I was just… not great at loving female characters, and when I sort of wanted to ship mlm ships exclusively. But show Claudia is incredible. I mean, there’s the part where she’s extremely badass, and one of her first acts as a vampire is to just. Straight up eat a cop. But I love that we start from that badass, highly emotional teenage space but then go deeper with her, and I love how unapologetically herself she is. I love that she dreams about the idea of finding vampire community. I love that she stands up for herself. I love that she and Lestat are so alike and they fight about it. I love that she refuses to let her truth be erased by the way she records everything in her diary. Claudia deserves the world and I cannot say that enough.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: CLAUDELEINE OBVIOUSLY. They deserved more happiness together than they got.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: If there were a universe where Claudia and Daniel could have existed at the same time and become friends, they would have been unstoppable, and they would have adored one another, and everyone else would have suffered for it. Hilariously.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Occasionally I see book only fans argue that the tragedy of Claudia is ruined when she’s turned as a teenager rather than a little kid. This is something I very much disagree with. Teens are just as tragic as little kids, first of all, but people do have a weird bias against teenagers and actually feeling for teenagers, and I wish they wouldn’t. Also, since Claudia looks like someone in between childhood and adulthood, the age that people in-universe read her as is like… entirely determined by what they want to read her as to control her. Sometimes people infantilize her and make her play Baby Lu. Sometimes they subject her to very adult forms of abuse. Claudia is still tragic no matter what, okay?

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish she and Madeleine could have lived in that cute cottage forever. (Gosh if only Armand hadn’t been stuck behind the baby gate…)

Sara

How I feel about this character: MY WONDERFUL DAUGHTER WHO HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG IN HER LIFE. But, while we’re talking about teenage girls, she’s one of the best teenage girls ever written on TV, ever. Sara reached out through the screen and grabbed me by the heart. Her care for others, her willingness to look past the obvious of a situation, her curiosity about who she is and what she values… when she said “no one likes me when I’m me” my sixteen year old self felt seen. I am consistently floored that all my favorite YouTubers who talk about autism and ADHD rep in television have weirdly never talked about her. I almost avoided joining YR tumblr fandom because the abundance of “Sara is on thin ice” posts I saw while lurking made me hesitant and disappointed. Most of my fandom hiatuses were caused in part by people being shitty about her. Sara has one of the best damn arcs in Young Royals, hands down.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Well, obviously August, controversial as that opinion is. I think their relationship ended up in the right place by the finale, but I can’t resist their chemistry along the way. And as I was saying to @heliza24 earlier, there’s just something about characters who perceive themselves as unlovable finding love with one another. Now, I want to have other Sara ships, but… I don’t know if I do, really? I might read Sara as a little arospec, like gray aro or something, and it actually means a lot to me that she chooses friends and family over romance in the end. But if you get back to me a few months from now maybe I’ll feel differently, who knows.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: potentially weird turn but like, Wilhelm? Specifically in Heart and Homeland where they end up in a kind of disability solidarity queerplatonic partnership. I don’t know if I feel that as much in canon. As far as canon goes, Felice first and Simon second.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I’m going to make this an extension of my August Unpopular Opinion on my August post, because I’m vibrating on a higher sargust frequency than usual this week due to anxiety about travel and I kinda just want to talk about sargust because it’s a comfort pairing. And that is… Sara’s feelings for August are something we can enjoy fannishly, too. They are something we can write fic about and come up with AUs for and make gifsets and fanmixes of. The AU stuff especially—I feel like sargust still could have happened in an alternate universe, or in a universe where Simon didn’t end up at Hillerska, or whatever else. Sara and August have a relationship in their own right and while they are a superb foil to wilmon they are not only a foil to wilmon. There is a level of Weird Teen Girl Horniness represented onscreen in the portrayal of Sara’s crush on August that just feels like, refreshing and authentic. The yearning with the picture of him in 1.5, like girl his hair is terrible in that picture and yet you are there for it! The grinding in 2.2! The dumb little arm punch in 2.3 before they just give up and make out! Seeing a lot of people who’d previously said only negative things about Sara suddenly decide they like her after season 3 when she dumped August was… not as comforting as I’d hoped it would be. Like again, to be clear, I do think their relationship ended in the right place and I want Sara away from him, obligatory “August did terrible things that I do not condone” disclaimer that I’m very bored of typing by now etc etc, I get why this is not everyone’s cup of tea, and so on and so forth. But I just… like them together, okay. And I wonder about all the other people who liked them together who ended up leaving the fandom because there wasn’t as much of a place to express that.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Sara’s arc is pretty perfect. I have one thing I maybe wanted to say about S3 but I’ll hold back for now. EDIT: I wanted her and Wilhelm to have more interaction in season 3. What was the lack of that about?

One thing’s for sure, after typing all that I really want Sara and Claudia to be friends, and to be able to play with horses together.

Honestly I've had a LOT of good ships with Mia. The most recent OTP is probaby Mia and Freddy with @coptm. Sadly they've been taking a break from RP. But other good ones were with @brkbd and @buriedwith-blog. I also had a ship with a Kelly from AVED.

What are you willing to RP when it comes to shipping?

Heck pretty much all of it. I love the fluffy stuff, the angsty stuff. I'll write the spicy stuff now and then but I suck at it. I just adore shipping and Mia loves all the flirty and physical stuff from it.

How large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?

I mean I don't mind an age gap. As long as they both met when they were fully into adulthood and it's completely consensual. Mia is 26 and I don't see her going for anyone younger than 21. And 21 is pushing it for me. But I'm probably good with 10 years, maybe 15 years. Big age gaps don't make me uncomfortable unless like the older person knew the younger when they were under 18. That makes it weird for me.

Are you selective when shipping?

I can be. It just depends on how well Mia and the other muse gets on. I've ship her with some pretty random characters, like freakin young Magneto from xmen and Jesse from Breaking Bad lol. So when it comes for fandoms I am not picky. Mia's the type that would find someone she would want to bang from any fandom.

How far do steamy moments have to go before they’re considered NSFW?

When hands start going lower and the panting and moaning starts. It usually goes under a read more or a fade to black.

Who are other muses you ship your muse with?

Not gonna lie, I've shipped her with a few Ash's in my day. Younger Ash and even older Ash (talk about an age gap lmao). Someone writing Ash even wanted him to be her long lost dad. That was when there were a bunch of Ash blogs around and they all wanted a different dynamic with Mia.

She also had a thing with a werewolf character. She made out with the main dude from the 2016 Blair Witch movie (Heather's brother). She had a relationship with a Rafe from Uncharted (i totally forgot about that one.) Also a Roman from Hemlock Grove.

I also had a super fun platonic ship going with a Ricky from trailer park boys. My girl has gone through it with various ships.

I don't mind if it just comes naturally in RP. It's funner that way. But it's also okay to ask. That makes it easier sometimes. But like it is super easy to ship with Mia. Even if it's just like a one night stand of friends with benefits. Girl likes to just make out sometimes without commitment.

unpopular opinion: i actually rlly like him being dead in most continuities. i like him ofc and all the newer slice of life tales where him and clef get to be funny middle aged gay men are rlly sweet but narrative meat wise dont compare to kondraki haunting the narrative the way hes so good at doing. i love how he looms over resurrection as this horrifying precedent as to what happens when you defy the foundation and obviously portraits and all its associated tales are really good.

first headcanon that pops into my head- That Stan 'comes out' to Kenny before he does Kyle by talking about boys he thinks are hot. He doesn't think about it that much in a 'secret sharing' capacity, more in the capacity of Kyle not liking to talk about people's bodies and him and Kenny just running their mouths a bit, but Kyle does see it more as Stan not telling him things and is hurt by it.

favorite line from this character- 'Oh God, I hope I didn't hurt any beavers.' is the one stuck in my head rn but really I like most of his lines.

one way in which I relate to this character- Getting stuck on something small that bugs me and snowballing it to a nonsensical degree to make a point. The traveling across the country because a movie pissed me off is the brand of nonsense I engage with when people don't tell me I'm being a dumbfuck and need to let things go.

thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character- The episodes where Stan gets up his own ass lol, but in a specific way. I actually didn't mind the ChatGPT ep in this regard and found it funny even though I did find it a backslide in growth with communicating with Wendy that's been pretty consistent (if sporadic) in my view though I know it bothered a lot of people just on a strict behavior standpoint. But the stuff that GETS me is eps like Butterballs where he's so wanting people to like him that it makes him a massive shitlord hahaha. The only one I find good enough to rewatch is Trapped in the Closet because caring about the good of the people was still part of that where most of the time it's really just down to 'I don't want to seem unlikable, look this is making me superficially popular which must mean people like me'.

What made you ship it?

I read Two Sides of the Same Coin in spring of 2021, which I found when I went through every fic in the “Bottom Tom Riddle” tag. It was a revelation! Both because it was a joy to find a fic that felt in line with my conception of Tom, which is rare, and because I had not thought about Narnia since I was a child. But I loved Narnia as a child, and why couldn’t this pairing work? They’re three years apart, they’re both in London or at least Britain, they’re schoolboys with rough personalities who undergo an unexpected journey into a magical world at roughly the same age (10 for Ed, 11 for Tom) and come out of it very changed. Only, Tom comes out as a worse person, and Ed makes out for the better. It immediately begs the question, what would happen if Tom had an arc more like Edmund? What might change if they knew each other, or even became friends?

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Everything. This is an OTP. Truly there is not a thing I dislike.

To be more helpful, I think one of the things I enjoy most is that their common ground is non-magical London, rather than either of their magical worlds. I’m a sucker for realism and making magical canons more “boring” by grounding them in the mundanities of daily life. Ed and Tom don’t belong in one another’s worlds, and I see either Tom or Edmund as primarily a visitor to the other’s magical space. However, there’s no obstacle to them existing together in our world. It’s that adjustment back to the mundane that challenges them, because they have to find ways to take joy in spaces they thought they’d left behind, perhaps even thought were beneath them—but it’s that vanity that earned their poor reputations to begin with, so I get to ask how to reconcile their pride and their experiences of magic with the world that they share and which also makes up a core part of their identity. They’re not going to lose the essence of wartime London, you know?

I also adore that they both have complicated relationships to age. Edmund, of course, because he reaches adulthood during his first visit to Narnia and then de-ages upon return to England. Tom because he attempts to evade aging through horcruxes, removing himself from the process entirely. They’ve got somewhat opposite experiences, but those feelings must set them apart from their peers and create a fertile discussion space.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

It’s a niche ship, but I do think there’s a trend in the existing fic to play Tom as more straightforwardly evil and Edmund as being seduced back to the dark side through him. I’m never interested in a flatly bad Tom, so it is perhaps unsurprising that in my opinion, Tom/Edmund is more compelling as an examination of how friendship (or merely relating to one’s peers) might steer Tom towards a different path in life. I’ve done this when Tom was young so far, and that is largely where I have ideas for the ship, but I do think there’s potential for a version wherein they meet in middle-age, when Tom returns from travels abroad and before or during the early stages of what becomes his first wizarding war. Developing a connection with a Muggle at that point would be very tricky for him, very weird, and middle-aged Edmund would have zero tolerance for that version of warmongering.

Lightning round: Snily, Jily, Blackcest

Snily: Don’t ship, they both deserve better than to be mired in childhood mistakes. I hope they can long-term be friends, in a world where they both survive, but friends with more distance and wider social circles than just each other. See each other once every month or two type of friends, for a quick lunch date wherein they talk about work and family and hobbies and don’t chew over the past at all.

Jily: Boo, hiss. I ship Jily and a messy divorce. They are utterly uninteresting together, and both have more compelling romance options elsewhere (Lily with Alecto Carrow is my rarepair, but really the idea is Lily/no one from her teenage dramas; James should blithely ignore Sirius’s desperate pining while they wank each other off after getting soused at the pub.)

Blackcest: I want to like it, any variation of it, more than I do. Oh! Wait. I definitely ship Walburga/Orion, in the sense that I really prefer their marriage to have had genuine love even if it’s not fully romantic/sexual or free of other issues. They can have their issues and their affairs, but they should have unwavering trust in some part of each other, and Walburga must truly grieve Orion’s death.

I really appreciate what you’ve said, in part because Jim and Leonard are unquestionably the healthiest pairing I’ve ever written. I am Old in both fandom and reality years, and I’ve simply hit a wall with my tolerance for bad relationships in both realms. Infidelity, emotional abuse, contempt, aiming to hurt in arguments, excessive drama or jealousy portrayed as romantic, sexist heteronormative nonsense, lopsided emotional investment or effort or affection - lord god, I am TIRED. Where is the respect? Where is the appreciation for differences instead of resentment or a drive to make the other change?? Where is the actually liking to be around each other???

I’ll be the first to admit that Leonard and Jim are totally over the top in their romantic sentiments and attachment to each other, but to be fair, they are both complete maniacs who were absolute emotional dumpster fires when they met. And that’s okay! Baggage-laden lunatics need love too! It is important to me, though, that their romantic relationship begins later in their arc, when they’ve both grown a lot independently and together and can approach that kind of love in a healthier, more balanced way. They’re still codependent to a degree I wouldn’t necessarily advocate for in real life, but it’s a codependence which uplifts rather than dragging down, balancing out their more extreme character traits and supporting them both to be the best versions of themselves.

Even with my extreme biases at work, I wouldn’t dream of saying love should look exactly like what Jim and Leonard have. Great relationships can take a lot of different forms, and even the best may go through rough patches - but, man, if your baseline isn’t one of mutual respect, emotional safety, a collaborative approach to challenges, and genuine enjoyment of each other’s company, please take this old crone’s advice and just go ahead and throw the whole thing out. Life’s too fucking short.

I'm gonna focus mostly on Wangxian since they are the only pairing I've actually published anything for, but aspects of the neverending (unpublished) Tolkien fic are likely to creep in here, too.

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

The fic as of yet only titled "Wangxian 1929" has many aspects that are inspired by stories I was told as a child about the lives of my maternal grandparents, including how they met. There are also a number of details inspired by events from my own childhood and young adulthood and Wei Wuxian's love of astronomy and cosmology is really just an echo of my own interests. I probably can't talk about much of it here because only one chapter has been published (though many more have been partly written), but in that story it is really Lan Wangji's often quite isolated and lonely day-to-day experiences, ones characterized more by his inner life than his interactions with others in the world outside of him, that most reflect my own experiences.

The neverending and unpublished Tolkien fic, if I were to honestly strip it down, is probably really just a very self-indulgent dialog with myself about theodicy and the frustration that comes with perfectionism as an artist, particularly when they are tied together so as to ask: how can a thing be both good and not perfect?

C: What character do you identify with most?

Regarding Wangxian I can see in myself almost equal parts of WWX and LWJ. I greatly identify with many of the quirks of WWX's brain as well as his very intense internal sense of justice (and admittedly his enjoyment of being the center of attention), but I also greatly identify with LWJ's stubborness, his idealism, his introversion, and his social akwardness.

I probably shouldn't tell anyone who I identify most with in my Tolkien fic…

I have a real soft spot for the sunshine/grumpy pairing. This doesn't necessarily apply to Wangxian--or at least not to older Wangxian--but I think there can be some similar dynamics at play, especially when they first meet and are young and LWJ is so angry at himself for feeling what he feels. But the waiting for them to get together angst, the long slow ratcheting up of yearning. That's just chef's kiss and I don't think I can ever read enough of it. You know that comic where the creator talks about the joy of seeing their OTP fall in love and get together 1000 times in 1000 different ways thanks to fanfiction? That's me with Wangxian.

Ooh, is this "ask about Shiha's thoughts on ships" hour? Do you feel like Sora/Takeru would be compatible? They're my boyfriend's OTP, and I've never really gotten to the point where I ship them, but I've always been curious about their potential. :|a

Tough question! I think the most difficult part in making this ship work is really going to be the three-year difference between them. With Adventure and 02 being so insistent on portraying things accurately to the real-life situation of how kids are, a whole three years is a big deal at that age, and it's especially so in the context of Japanese seniority culture where even one year is considered by society to completely recontextualize how you're supposed to treat others. I think, as far as both Adventure and 02, the "power difference", so to speak, is huge enough for it to be intrusive; Takeru in Adventure, at such a young age, obviously looked up to Sora as a much older sister figure. Three years is enough for them to not even be in the same school block after elementary school, and I think the only time where that difference stops being nearly as intrusive will be once they get to adult/university age -- or in other words Kizuna's time period, but unfortunately we haven't seen them interact during this time so making judgment calls is hard (I mean, they didn't even interact that much in 02, so reassessing their dynamic in regards to Takeru's higher maturity level compared to Adventure is still pretty difficult).

Now, if we were to completely throw out the context of how they came to know each other (because I honestly think the biggest obstacle would simply be that their circumstances in canon make it very difficult to diffuse that power relationship) and think of them purely in terms of personality and theoretical compatibility in an AU or something, I think the biggest obstacle would be the fact that they're both very closed-in types with a poor track record of being honest about their own feelings, which might lead to potential issues in communication. But because this is an AU, we can also think about circumstances where both of them might have learned to get past that issue. In that case, then since they otherwise both have very temperate and moderate personalities, I could see it potentially working out in adulthood.

1: Sexuality headcanon = I know she had a husband/briefly flirted with Putty... buuut since she didn't seem too invested in said marriage (+only flirted with Putty to get back at Florence), I'm not sure if she's really that into guys (or, just romance as a whole)? 🤔 Idk... for now I'll say she's prob somewhere on the Ace scale rn.

Leonard/Fun, flirtatious folks who remind him that regardless of how he feels, he’s still young. As you can see, he’s quite shippable. Even if your muse is none of these, it’s still On. 

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO WRITE WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING? Honestly, pretty much anything. The only thing I don’t really care for is cheating plots, but that’s a personal preference, not necessarily a hard no if it’s plotted right.
