Sometimes i wojder wtf is wrong with harry in 6th book because in quidditch game where he became captain, malfoy doesn't play and he told to substitue slytherin seeker that how much malfoy paid you to play for him and he even doesn't know why he said it and before game, he sees malfoy with two girls and asks where are you going? Like he's gonna answer bruh😂
First, I love the parallels between Harry and Draco in book 6 - like Harry suddenly playing more like Draco in the game where Draco isn't there (because yelling something to distract a player is SUCH a Draco tactic).
Second of all, I will never be over the fact that in canon Harry's actual reaction to Draco not playing is to lose interest in Quidditch, even though Ginny, his supposed love interest, is on the team and it's one of his main ways to spend time with her; that feels like something out of a rabidly pro-drarry, anti-hinny spitefic, but it's in the actual books. What?!
Third, I think Harry straight up asking Draco where he's going is super interesting. Like yeah of course Draco won't tell him. But it's part of a pattern where Harry is weirdly comfortable talking to Draco. Just like he'll ask him stuff in book 3 or book 5 when he wants info. Their conversations are obviously very antagonistic but on an almost subconscious level they feel comfortable around each other. Just like they're often very physically close to each other when they argue - to the point that they can whisper to each other - and don't mind (even though Harry is not generally very physical or comfortable around people he's not super close to). I can't imagine James and Snape or Ron & Draco interacting in this way. They're so drawn to each other. It's fascinating.

Meta: Snape and Forms of Address
I was doing some speech analysis for my own writing research and thought I'd share it with all of you. Essentially, I wanted to examine when Snape uses titles (Professor, Mr./Miss) versus full names versus last names only versus first names, and what this might signify.
Using Titles
The most obvious instance that comes to mind is Snape addressing Voldemort as "my Lord," which is also his last usage of any form of a name chronologically. This title was probably required by Voldemort, however, as all the Death Eaters use it, despite their different personalities. Similarly, Snape's use of "the Dark Lord" falls into this category; as Harry observes in OotP, the Death Eaters use this name for Voldemort. Snape reacts in a strongly negative way to Harry's use of "Voldemort," saying by implication that he does not feel secure in using this name. (It is interesting to note that Dumbledore constantly uses "Voldemort" around Snape, and while Snape never corrects him, Snape also never deviates from "the Dark Lord," which Dumbledore also never corrects.)
Snape has a high awareness of titles of respect, both for himself ("This may not be an ordinary class, Potter, but I am still your teacher and you will therefore call me 'sir' or 'Professor' at all times," OotP) and others. Snape himself is never said to call anyone "sir" (or "ma'am"), but he does use "Headmaster" sixteen times (ten as indirectly referring to Dumbledore, six directly addressing Dumbledore), "Headmistress" once (to Umbridge), and "Professor" eleven (once for himself when he's trying to compel the Marauder's Map, four times as direct address, six times to indirectly refer to someone). All of these forms of respectful scholastic address take place in books 2-5. Snape sometimes refers to Dumbledore as "the headmaster" when he is speaking about him to an adult with children apparently not present (as when he speaks to Fudge in PoA), but he only addresses Dumbledore as "Headmaster" when he is expecting to be observed, and he only uses "Professor" as a way of referring to his colleagues when speaking to or in front of children. Conspicuously, while he generally speaks of Lupin as "Professor Lupin" in front of the DADA class in PoA, he speaks to Lupin as only "Lupin" whether students are present or not. In a reversal of this formality dynamic, Snape uses "Minister" when speaking to Fudge, but "Mr. Fudge" when speaking about him. (This might have something to do with the fact that, in the first case, Fudge was helping work against Sirius Black, while in the second, Fudge had just allowed a Dementor to Kiss Barty Crouch Jr.) Filch is "Filch" to his face when students aren't there, "Mr. Filch" when being referred to. Hagrid is always "Hagrid," but that's what everyone seems to do.
When it comes to students, Snape is generally inconsistent about calling them "Mr./Miss" or simply using their last names. "Draco" is the only student we see him use a first name with, and that begins in OotP, after a good deal of "Malfoy" and "Mr. Malfoy" in the books before that. Ron gets both "Weasley" and "Mr. Weasley." Seamus gets both "Finnigan" and "Mr. Finnigan." In general, girls always get "Miss," with the exception of the Ravenclaw girl Snape catches in the rosebushes in GoF (and possibly Hermione, who is referred to as "Granger" in Snape's report to Fudge in PoA, though this might be by parallelism with "Potter" and "Weasley" in the phrase "Potter, Weasley, and Granger." "Finch-Fletchley" is mentioned once with no courtesy marker, as is "Stebbins," but once is too little to establish a pattern. Snape uses "Crabbe and Goyle" without any markers, but everyone does that. Neville and most of all Harry are conspicuously addressed without any "Mr." at any point.
Full Names
Used mostly for emphasis. "Harry Potter" gets this eleven times, mostly to evoke Harry as a concept rather than an individual, often tied to his fame — "the train isn't good enough for the famous Harry Potter," CoS; "famous Harry Potter," PoA — or to speak of Harry in Snape's capacity as Death Eater — "If I had murdered Harry Potter," HBP; "the Order of the Phoenix intends to move Harry Potter," DH; "Have you seen Harry Potter, Minerva?" DH. If Snape's saying "Harry Potter," he is Not Doing Well.
Similarly, Snape uses "Sirius Black" either to report ("Everyone from the Minister of Magic downward has been trying to keep famous Harry Potter safe from Sirius Black," PoA; "it certainly helped dispose of Sirius Black," HBP) or to remind Dumbledore of his trauma ("Sirius Black showed he was capable of murder at the age of sixteen," PoA).
"Barty Crouch" gets an exclamation of surprise using his full name, but only after Snape uses the more familiar last: "Crouch! Barty Crouch!" (GoF). He also gets the full-name treatment in a report to Dumbledore. "Mad-Eye Moody" gets a very unusual usage of a nickname, but his nickname seems to be taken as a first name by nearly everyone. This again happens in a negative context: "Now, Mad-Eye Moody might have joined your fan club," GoF.
"Lucius Malfoy" gets the full-name treatment in the middle of Snape's fight with Sirius in OotP, where it parallels Sirius's own use of Malfoy's full name.
"Albus Dumbledore" and "Emmeline Vance" get the full-name treatment in Snape's conversation at Spinner's End in HBP, which is full of full names and cautious distances.
"Dolores Umbridge" gets her full name used when Snape is talking to Harry, thus showing his distance from her (other professors get their titles or their last names).
Lily gets one "Lily Evans" during Snape's initial distress over the prophecy, one first-name only, and one "Lily Potter," in that order, thus showing the progression of Snape's thinking, as many Snape commentators have pointed out.
Interestingly, Snape gives himself his full name twice, once to invoke his authority over the Marauders' Map and once to distance his inner personhood from betraying Dumbledore in the clause "[Dumbledore] has never stopped trusting Severus Snape, and therein lies my great value to the Dark Lord."
Last Names
Using last names is very much Snape's default. Both Lupin and Karkaroff attempt to address Snape by his first name, thus establishing a less formal relationship than he wants with them; he responds by using their last names instead, though he acquiesces to using "Igor" with Karkaroff when they are not in class. When Sirius calls him "Snivellus" in OotP, Snape responds using his last name too.
Snape's last-name preferences date from childhood, where James and Remus are "Potter" and "that Lupin." Nor are they restricted to enemies only; the last words reported as Snape's in the story (as opposed to his chronological last words) are "Don't worry, Dumbledore. I have a plan..."
First Names
The people Snape addresses or refers to by first name alone are few in number: Igor Karkaroff (the first to be so, in GoF); Draco (the only one in OotP); Narcissa, Bellatrix, Lucius, Nymphadora Tonks (the lack of nickname here has been discussed elsewhere); Alecto, Minerva (the last to be so, chronologically); Lily (the last to be so, in terms of what we see in the story).
Oddly, Snape uses "Aunt Bellatrix" when talking to Draco in HBP; perhaps he is putting things in Draco's terms here? Though it's "Aunt Bellatrix has been teaching you Occlumency, I see," not "Your Aunt Bellatrix..."
Draco gets his first name used the most, 17 times. Narcissa gets it 10 times, all in the Spinner's End conversation; Bellatrix gets 9, 8 of which are in that conversation; Lucius gets 5, three here and two with Dumbledore; Minerva gets twice. The others get once.
Nicknames
"Wormtail" and "Mad-Eye Moody." (And, arguably, "the Dark Lord.") Snape using your nickname is not a good sign. Perhaps this stems from his feelings about his own?
Concluding Thoughts
Snape's uses of different name forms do not follow a straightforward rule, but several things are clear. The name he uses for someone is always intentional, showing the sort of relationship he has with the person in question (or that he wants to project that he has). Snape and McGonagall, for instance, enjoy a mutual "Professor Lastname" status in their dealings in front of students (rarer, for McGonagall), but "Severus" and "Minerva" without students apparently present (which we see in DH — markedly, this is one of the only times Snape responds to his first name by switching everyone to a first-name basis, although he usually reacts to antagonism by taking the distancing road of a last name). Students sometimes get a "Mr." to show they're not "Potter," sometimes merely as a normal form of address when they're not misbehaving (which ups the chances of no "Mr./Miss" for everyone, though not Hermione). Sometimes, though, a last name is just quicker to say. Full names mean more distance; the person is treated as a concept. Nicknames are not friendly. First names show either projected friendliness or genuine friendliness, to an equal or a student (never to Dumbledore); most cases could go either way (though I think Snape has no real fondness for "Alecto").

Magic and Malice
Magic and Malice https://ift.tt/42HlkMs by Hiitsmeyourwife Don't take this seriously, or do. I'm American and living in a hellscape. This is my way of escaping reality with my favorite idiots. I'm enjoying funneling my anger and frustration into this. Hermione is angry, and so am I. We both want to burn down governments. She's better at it than me. She's sarcastic; her mind is a weird place to be. She can be abrasive, but she's also loveable and human too. Sometimes. She's got plans and color-coded stuff. She's intelligent and knows people who know people. There's a lot of swearing. Mostly unserious, but also serious. Some drunkenness, a lot of arguing, and a sprinkle of humor. Yes, of course, this is Dramione. It wouldn't be anything else. You may notice some parallels between real life politicians and governments. This is entirely a coincidence, and none of this is based on real characters. This is obviously fiction. For legal purposes. The actual characters were created by JK Rowling and I just write them into scenarios that keep me up at night. I promised I wouldn't start a work in progress before I finished the previous WIP. Stop All the Clocks (This Is the Last Time I’m Leaving Without You) by firethesound
Summary: Living with Draco was difficult; living without him is unbearable. But if there’s one thing Harry learned from the war, it’s that even when one life ends, the rest of the world goes right on living.
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating: E
Words: 44,706
Warning: Major Character Death; Harry/OMC
This hurts like hell. It's a story about how Harry coped with Draco's death after one mission went wrong. There were two parallel timelines: one of how they got together, and the other after Draco was gone. It raises the question of whether the saying "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" is true. Is the time together with your true love worth all the pain when you lose them? Especially if the loss comes suddenly or the time isn't long enough? But perhaps it would never be long enough if you're truly in love with someone.
I'm not sure I could ever bear to read this again, but if you want to read something heavy and full of sorrow, you should definitely read this. (The part of their time together is wonderful, and sometimes made me laugh and feel warm at heart, which makes the hurt of Draco's death even more heart-rending. It's kind of like the movie Inside Out shows, all the memories of happiness were tinged with sadness when life changed.)
I dream of you, to wake by harryromper
Summary:
“Typically coma patients are made comfortable and left to regain consciousness in their own time," Draco points out carefully.
“Typically, yes. But when has anything about Harry been typical.” Hermione sighs, rubbing at her eye with the heel of her hand. “The Healer-in-Charge has consulted with experts at all the major wizarding hospitals. They all agree. Whatever’s happening inside of Harry’s head right now is killing him.”
Draco Malfoy is a world-renowned dream-walker, and he may be Harry Potter’s only hope.
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating: T
Words: 13,665
The more you walked into Harry's dream alongside Draco, the sadder you felt for Harry. It's a beautifully written story with a situation bordering on hopeless, but there awaits a happy ending.
Prelude and Fugue by shes_gone
Summary: It took over an hour, from the time Harry arrived at work, for him to realise just how different today actually was.
Pairing: Harry Potter/Ron Weasley
Rating: E
Words: 16,094
My favorite fic of Harry/Ron! It's a time-loop story with an ingenious plot and one of the loops is really heart-breaking.

hello!! good morningg, i hope you’ve had breakfast! if not, i hope you eat well <33
ooh yeah, he’d probably have his own struggles with bullying and have the fear of the hogwarts students inflate his ego just so he can look tough and not let people get attached to him as much, so they won’t get hurt (BB NO!!). ooh yeah by 4th year he’d def stop. actually i had a silly hc that somewhere around the final days of 3rd year (or the start of 4th year), mattheo and harry finally see eye to eye (like for example; harry sees mattheo bully someone and he stands up for them and they glare at each other since mortal enemies ig),, and that’s where they start this small, mini rivalry that’s a bit subtle in my eyes.
YEAHH THE WEASLEY FAMILY THING 🥹 mattheo would be so jealous, since he grew up as an orphan, got bullied, feared by hogwarts and not a single drop of love from his family (who are both absent in his lives). i think that maybe mattheo visits the malfoy manor sometimes, and sure he feels some praise but not as pure and genuine as the one harry gets. mattheo would probably say smth like “that bloody golden potter boy, everyone loves him. what makes him so special? he survived Voldemort? I did too. why didn’t i get love? why didn’t i get a loving family? what made me so different when we experienced parallel lives?”
WE SHOULD TBH ‼️‼️ characterizing mattheo is a hobby now ugh!! ofc u can use my hcs, we basically worked on them together HAHAH i love talking abt this too!!
anw, i hope ur taking care of urself! stay safe and always stay hydrated, rest comfortably as well! mwa <3 - c: anon
GOOD MORNING ANGEL !! hope you had something as well ml , take care of yourself <33
YOU’RE SO RIGHT ron would mutter about the slytherins under his breath to harry while hermione just scolds him for always talking about them 😭😭 and then after mattheo and harry finally came eye to eye , ron would just go “bloody hell, harry! have you seen the way he looked at you? if looks could kill you’d drop dead right there!!!” pleaseee i love ron ☹️
my personal hc is that mattheo grew up in the orphanage and always returned there for the summer break since the 1st year until his 4th year , practically until the rise of the dark lord . his father wouldn’t want his heir to go back anymore so he organized for mattheo to live with the malfoys for the remaining time of his academic life since their place became voldemort’s sanctuary (?? idk if i recall it correctly 😭😭) as well . i also think that narcissa would take mattheo under her wing from that moment bc you could see how much she cared for draco and i think she’d care just as much for mattheo , lucius would be more careful around the boy bc the boy’s father is his lord after all and he doesn’t want any trouble
mattheo so would hold grudge against harry bc of the family issues
i LOVE analyzing mattheo’s character he’s really interesting . also , who do you hc as mattheo’s mother? in the og fic it was bellatrix if i remember right but i don’t really see her as his mother

Part of what made my brain do a little "ah ha!" at the Harry and Ron and Snape and Lily comparison is that in either case the friendship could be read as wholly platonic or not (though much more has been made of Harry and Draco's dynamic, especially when he became a boy wholly obsessed during sixth year when he just knew he was Death Eater and no one would listen to him which also makes me go ah ha! for how that tends to parallel with a young Snape and how he must have felt similarly where Remus Lupin was concerned but that's a whole other thing, point being Harry and Snape tend to parallel a lot) and how much easier it tends to be for people to see Snape and Lily's dynamic as something strictly romantic (and unfortunately quite predatorily sexual from a far too young an age to be comfortable for me that anyone is reading sexual intentions in the interactions of small children even if only because some people tend to take Voldemort's perception as fact rather than an intentional canon point that Voldemort doesn't understand love beyond desire) over Harry and Ron's friendship.
Importantly, I think that a romantic relationship doesn't always have to carry sexual connotations. There are plenty of people who form romantic, non-sexual relationships. Just like there are many different kinds of love, romance and romantic relationships can look like different things to different people. For me though, the initial fascination was Harry's loss of his friendship with Ron and the way he took it so hard could be for all of the reasons I speculated and we could still read his feelings for Ron as either purely platonic or gay or something more complicated and the specifics of that don't in anyway change the fact that Harry also just feels miserable not talking to Ron because he was his first real friend and connection to the magical world and I just think that perfectly encapsulates what my greatest issue is with the idea Lily's only importance to Snape was because of a possible romantic interest, that without that romantic interest losing her would lose some of its impact.
I think sometimes when discussing romance, especially heteronormative readings of it (which JKR is the worst at for all she wants to rage against the dangers of "evil trans people" in public spaces, her idea of heteronormative romance is about as dated as her second-wave feminist views on gender and gender roles and toxic even by 90s standards of how "males and females" should relate to each other and probably leave her conflicted in the same way she is about Snape as a character because omg let me tell you second-wave feminism at its core had this idea that women could achieve equality by rejecting feminine coded/domestic spheres and carving out a place in the male coded/patriarchal space so you have Hermione with her radical rejection of all things feminine coded by her standards and her sheer disdain for it all because she's not like the other girls and Umbridge who is super pink and frilly and feminine and EVIL and then Snape and you begin to see just how messy a space JKR's head must be trying to unpack gender as we understand it today and as this new gen of readers she's confronted with experience things as a reality and because she's always been petty af let's be real her anxieties and lashing out with transphobia is a thing she just doubles down on because god forbid this white woman with an upper-middle-class traditional English education who got famous off her rags to riches narrative all the same is not going to check her privilege and accept she has anything left to learn, ok sorry rant over!) people get so caught up in the "romance" part they forget all the additional nuances of what it means to have a relationship with someone and that how we form bonds and connections are often more complex than just so long as we love the person in our loves romantically the loss of them is something more profound.
I just think of all those people who fall in and out of romantic love but who continue to share a connection or bond because they know each other on the kind of deeper level you do when spending years in each other's lives. Alternatively, I think of people who spend years together, in each other's lives existing at first only ever as friends and maybe they fall in romantic love at some point but that is only a new component of a connection that has been ongoing for a significant part of their lives and even if it had never happened it wouldn't have made the loss of each other any less profound or painful.
I don't know, maybe I'm not making any sense because I'm already a few morning coffees in, but I just think of how we sometimes get caught up in the cliches of great romantic love stories and forget how human connection outside of that goes much deeper and can be much more complex. Because Snape and Lily are a boy and girl, and to be fair likely because JKR subscribes to very dated and heteronormative views on gender relations, people ascribe romantic feelings to their relationship and even when it isn't read as a negative and people just ship it, I get the sense that perceptually what Lily meant to Snape can sometimes begin and end at "he loved her romantically and even though it was unrequited her loss was profound enough he loved her, always." And that's not to knock anyone who enjoys the romance of that idea, I can fully understand getting caught up in the beauty of the idea of someone loving you so faithfully and fully as someone who grew up watching my parents love each other that way and wanting that too.
It's just to say, love is more than just romance (just as romance and romantic relationships exclude sexual desire or sex and still be equally valid) in the sense that Snape could have loved Lily as a friend or romantically and Harry could have loved Ron as either but what they meant to each other went beyond just platonic or romantic, there was a connection formed between them that included other more complex feelings and significance that tied them together and made the loss of that connection something felt and painful.
I don't know, I just feel there's some very interesting material there for conversation in those kind of parallels. In large part because looking at a friendship between Harry and Ron and paralleling it with Snape and Lily also forces people to step outside heteronormative perspectives and think about issues like that and other things like do we ascribed romance easier to one over the other or do we read the intentions of Harry differently than Snape in his friendship to Ron, etc? There's a lot there for me and I'll probably be thinking on it all week now, so thanks!
looking back at the harry potter books with like… actual time frames you realise that the most ron’s ever gone without really talking to harry was like two weeks but everyone always makes such a bigger deal out of it because harry is the one who makes a gigantic deal out of it. i think the fandom should make fun of him more for how dramatic he gets when fighting with ron.
you read the books and each time ron doesn’t talk to harry the narration is like. harry woke up feeling miserable. he turned to talk to ron but then remembered they aren’t talking and that made him start wallowing in his own sadness. there’s no point in going to the great hall, he can’t eat. he spent the potions class looking at ron who decided to sit with seamus instead of him. he was so busy staring at ron wishing they could make up he didn’t notice his cauldron exploding. snape is screaming but ron is still not talking to him. he has detention? big deal. if ron was there they would have detention together

See How They Run by @harryromper

Harry/Draco (2021, Mature, 51k)
Harry’s living above the shop in Knockturn Alley, working as a private detective after a failed stint as an Auror, when he gets an invitation from Luna Lovegood to the last place he could have imagined: Malfoy Manor.
Harry’s done a masterful job of keeping the Malfoy he shags occasionally entirely separate in his head from the Malfoy who was raised at the Manor to oppose everything Harry stands for. And Harry maintains that very careful separation by not considering it at all: like a blackness in a dream you fear looking at in case it swallows you whole. But he can feel it there sometimes, even when he’s with Malfoy. The past looming over them.
I’m on an exciting longfic reread streak and it’s been the best low-pressure way to stay active in fandom while taking the edge off after a long work day. I’m finding great comfort in old faves and trying not to plan too much ahead - it goes more or less like “hmm I’m craving a specific trope tonight, I wonder what juicy treats I can find in my bookmarks” and that’s how I ended up going to bed at 2am after indulging another delicious murder mystery by one of my favorite authors (if you haven’t checked all HR’s works you’re missing out, start with Turn From Stone and come scream about it with me!!)
Fuck buddies my beloved! I will die on that hill and this fic captures everything I love about this trope with Drarry, especially when they’re not friends or even colleagues but somehow keep fucking finding each other. Complicated oblivious pining, a confusing mix of want and guilt, lots of denial and feral animosity masking their ache to connect. Here Harry and Draco are quiet, distant and restrained around each other, which is so very different from the usual take on their sneaking around.
They’re in no way less intense about each other but are still haunted by their past and incapable of talking it out and going beyond falling into bed together (repeatedly 🌝). The fast sexual burn + slow emotional burn never gets old and is perfectly executed within the tense murder mystery atmosphere. Sharing a weekend under the same roof and facing a crime investigation together, they’re finally pushed to acknowledge each other and their feelings. Slowly but surely we start getting tiny bits of electrifying sexual tension, sharp and intense and sprinkled with soft moments of tenderness and vulnerability, I can’t express how much I adore this! 🤌🏼
Beyond this delicious Drarry romance, this fic has amazing settings and characterization all around. It’s very cinematic to follow a murder mystery set in Manor Manor - the space feels oppressive and vibrates with tension as this awkward schoolmates reunion brings together complex and secretive characters, each facing their own demons. As those layers are revealed, multiple dynamics are cleverly woven into the main plot making the story captivating from all angles. There’s another complicated side ship I won’t mention for spoiler reasons, there’s Harry & Ron’s fractured friendship after Harry leaves the Aurors to become a private investigator, there’s a brilliant and heartbreaking murderer reveal. All those parallel dynamics give the story a human element that I loved, even if in a dark and devastating way.
As per HR’s usual, this is a brilliant thriller that feels very much like a Poirot adventure; the crime book vibes are immaculate and the story keeps you engaged at all times with a lovely pining Draco, clever twists, A+ foreshadowing and a disturbingly dark edge to remind us of the lasting war horrors and marks of trauma. It feels very original (the hunt ritual is one of my favourite moments and concepts in fic, so well done!) and also true to the HP universe as a realistic post-war scenario. I promise you’ll be hooked from beginning to end, and what better way to start your weekend? Happy readings!

Hello Marion, I just finished your wonderful new christmas fic <3 <3 <3 and came to your tumblr to learn more about grief. Specifically how and why one feels set apart and not belonging to the world anymore (yes, I can relate to that!). Are there any ressources you could share? Love and thanks <3
hello anon 🤍 i’m sorry it took me a little while to get to this message! this time of the year is always a bit intense and i wanted to have the time to actually sit down and have a think about this! i am glad you enjoyed Aere Perennius but also sorry it resonated with you!
(this will get long. i am a chatty bastard, i apologise in advance!)
i have always been very comfy around death! i think it’s partially the catholicism, partially the folklore of where i grew up and partially this very specific way to look at death as something natural and normal that we have in my culture!
but loss is disorientating! i think heartbreak and sadness are always the feelings we think of, but the hardest thing about loss, for me is how confusing it is sometimes.
like how do you continue going on when something that large has happened? and why isn’t the world as upset about it as you are? it is awful, it is harrowing, it is life changing and it’s hard to accept that can exist at the same time that the sun keeps rising and setting and the earth keeps turning.
i feel like i have to mention that i am not a specialist in the human psychology whatsoever, so take whatever i say as my personal opinion based on my own experiences! i did have a fair amount of therapy specifically to deal with an unexpected and traumatic loss that i often refer to as The Big Grief (i believe i use this wording in Aere Perennius at one point actually!), and i think the hardest part of grief that causes that feeling of alienation is the loss of normalcy. everything feels tainted, almost
your life had someone or something in it and now it doesn’t! maybe you’ve always had that someone or that something, or maybe you never really got to know that someone or that something the way you wanted to. you feel robbed of Moments and Experiences and Time with Them. to me, that’s the biggest thing!
(spoilers for Aere Perennius under the cut, because it’s easier to use fiction for examples:)
grief and loss are major plot points in AP, and i think that, at first, you think it’s about Draco and Narcissa specifically but the consequences of loss go well beyond that, which you learn as the story moves along.
it was important to me that we got a little bit of dealing with loss from Everyone. Draco’s is bright and fresh and stark and it’s still a constant sore spot. in contrast, Harry is settled in his grief — he knows it well, his grief is an old friend. Luna’s mirrors Harry’s in a way, with the caveat that she has her dad still, and that her grief isn’t public (she isn’t famous and her mother’s death isn’t essentially a public holiday for a large group of people, and i really wanted to explore what that was like for Harry)
but you have quieter grief, too.
Pansy is stoic as all hell about her grief. i say this with love and i hope people will know what i mean by it, but i think Pansy is very british about her trauma. but she did find herself a support group and she is fiercely protective of Draco and Blaise
Ron and Hermione are even more settled in their grief than Harry. it isn’t obviously there! but it is there! it’s more recent but the loss Hermione’s parents and Ron’s brother were direct consequences of war. i imagine they have leaned on each other and on the Weasleys to heal from that.
and you have my dear boy Blaise, too. he was the hardest to write, in the end. Blaise is the opposite of Pansy. he won’t talk about it, i’d go as far as saying he doesn’t want to let himself even think about it. and despite his own discomfort, despite how much he finds it easier to hide, we know he would do anything for Draco and Pansy.
in a way, the Golden Trio and the Silver trio kind of work in parallel. the Gryffindors were (at least partially) willingly part of a war that cost them a lot, and had immediate consequences. the Slytherins came out of a war surprisingly intact all things considered only to lose everything after and in unexpected ways!
AP is a multipack of grief and loss! you kind of get every flavour, really 😂
as i feared, this turned into a wee bit of an essay now and i don’t even know if any of this makes particular sense or is pertinent to your question. grief and loss are very common subjects in my fics and i clearly have a lot to say lol
loss can be moving away from a city you loved and made a life in, loss can be a mutual decision to end a friendship that is no longer serving either of you, it can be a loved one’s death, it can be witnessing someone you love become ill, it can be dealing with illness yourself, and it can be growing out of your own skin and becoming a new person. either way, it’s never easy. we are creatures of habit and adjusting is always an adventure.
in terms of resources, i’m afraid i don’t have much. therapy helped me a lot and i honestly miss my therapist every day! a good support system is wonderful — not even in a therapy way, not even in a ‘i need to talk’ way! get friends who make you laugh, who see things and send them to you because they’ll know you’ll enjoy it, etc. also, at the risk of sounding cliche, putting my feelings into my writing and my art and my crafts has helped a lot, too. like harry says, grief is forever. but it doesn’t mean you can’t have joy at the same time, too. let them meet each other. grief and joy are not opposites, they are both cause and consequence. you just gotta get real cosy with the knowledge that they exist in a circle/cycle. and hey, we’ll be alright! that’s what i always tell myself!
sending you lots of love, anon x

Hello everyone! I’m back for my (omg time flies) third yearly drarry rec list, in which I share with you my 30 favorite drarry fics I read in the year, divided in three parts. What a year 2020 was. It was challenging, scary and confusing, and it was also an amazing reading year for me, I read so, so much more than I ever had before, and I’m really excited to share these masterpieces with you! The banner art is by @dragontamerdame who is one of my favorite artists and was kind enough to let me use this beautiful piece, which you can (and totally should) reblog right here. Now, with nothing else to add and in no particular order, here’s my
FAVORITE FICS I READ IN 2020 PART ONE
1. Who we are in the shadows - @quicksilvermaid - 100k - E - What happens when you’re forced to become the very thing you despise? Ex-Auror Harry Potter, tossed out of the Ministry for something he had no control over, has been looking for a way back to his former life. When he comes across Draco Malfoy in the criminal underbelly of Wizarding London and in need of protection, Harry figures bringing him in to face the Ministry's justice is his ticket back to everything he's lost. But nothing is exactly as it seems. Not even Harry himself. And as he gets drawn further and further into Malfoy's world of honour and deception he finds himself questioning everything he thought he knew—about his childhood nemesis, the Ministry job he misses so much, and most of all, about himself. What happens when you’re forced to see that you were wrong?
THIS FIC!!! It was the first one I read in 2020, and it immediately became my favorite fic of the entire year, and one of my favorites of all time. I have since read it two more times, the entire 100k of it. There are absolutely no words to describe how amazing it is, how much it floored me to read their characterizations, their jobs and the roads life took them on to end up where they end up, the connection between them in a time when they don’t even know how to relate to anyone, their sorrow and struggles which, despite being so rooted in the magical world, are painfully human, just... wow. It’s a masterpiece. It changed the way I view their characters, forever, and I suspect I will read it many, many more times in the years to come. It’s that kind of story. If for whatever reason you haven’t read it, this is your sign to take that chance and embark on this amazing journey.
2. Every Kingdom - @thistle-verse - 7k - E - Every kingdom needs a prince. Every prince needs a good and useful knight. Draco and Harry play their parts and renegotiate some borders while they’re at it.
So, so lovely. Even though I don’t read them very often, alternate universes fascinate me so much, and I am in awe of the author for being able to pack so, so much story, so neatly into 7k words. This features a princely, lonesome Draco, a charming, golden Harry, and a blossoming love that could change everything. It’s beautiful, and I recommend it deeply.
3. The Bucket List - GallaPlacidia - 32k - Draco will die in six months if he can't get Harry Potter to fall in love with him. Since that's not going to happen, he might as well spend his last days working through his Bucket List. Tap-dancing lessons? Rock climbing? Poetry-writing? Threesomes? Cocaine? Getting to know his adorable cousin, Teddy Lupin? Draco will try them all! Feat. Cheerily pessimistic Draco, devoted bitch queen Pansy Parkinson, and a Harry who can't help but notice that something seems DIFFERENT about Draco, these days.
I’m positive that many, many of us got acquainted with GallaPlacidia’s writing this year, and I, too, fell in love with it. This story aches in the most beautiful of ways, the humor happens to be somehow light in such a difficult circumstance that it ends up hurting when you laugh, it hurts when everything is right because it’s also wrong, it aches when it’s supposed to be a happy moment and feels tender and sweet when it’s not. I can’t even imagine the challenge of writing this kind of story, and they pulled it off beautifully. It’s a lovely story, one you will take with you long after you finish it, and, personally, I think it’s a great introduction to the author’s writing.
4. halcyon days - @the-starryknight - 1.3k - T - Sleepy mornings caught while the sun rises are reserved for silly word games and soft touches and feelings.
Oh my god, the amount of tenderness in such a low wordcount made me weak in the knees. I almost couldn’t take it. Being able to convey such a deep emotional connection in a short story seems like such a daunting task, and the author makes it seem almost effortless. I guarantee that this will make you bring your hands to your chest and sigh with how lovely it is. Reading it will be the best ten minutes of your day.
5. Clouds That Veil the Midnight Moon - @drarrytrash - 37k - E - According to Harry’s personal narrative regarding the incident, he’d hooked up with Draco Malfoy for purely self-destructive reasons, or out of convenience, or by some unlucky accident. Looking at him, sprawled in the moonlight, Harry is devastated to recall that he’d hooked up with Draco Malfoy because he’s hot. Draco is a secret werewolf and Harry is doing his best and they've got criminals to catch, darn it.
Reading this, I found myself laughing out loud, nodding profusely with how freaking spot on the characterizations are. The dialogue is amazing, so hilarious and real and Harry’s inner monologue is so, so him. I love everything about this story. I have a soft spot for werewolf fic, and this one hit everything I love about it, the case is interesting and engaging, the incidental characters, the OCs, Ron and Hermione, everyone and everything is absolutely perfect and I had an absolute blast reading it. You HAVE to read this and see for yourself what I’m talking about.
6. Sex Ed for Aurors - curiouslyfic - 8k - M - Some things, you need to learn on the job.
Oh my god this is so freaking good. The premise is, basically, that Harry is accidentally doused with a lust potion while in the vicinity of Draco, and suddenly wants him more than anything. I loved this take on that trope, we’re in Harry’s head, and it’s absolutely hilarious and endearing to experience the near childish glee he feels whenever Draco looks his way, when he smiles, when he feels he’s made him happy, meanwhile Draco and Ron are horrified and doing whatever they can to correct it. This is so funny and such a good time, I can’t recommend it enough! While you’re at it, you should definitely read megyal’s remix of this, which is also a blast.
7. plasticine porters with looking-glass ties - @bonesliketambourines - 15K - E - Lately, Harry thinks things don’t seem the same between him and Draco. His head is in the clouds when he thinks about what their relationship is now, and where it might be headed—he’s happy with their friendship, but he wants something else. A potions accident over a lunchtime visit to Draco’s lab (what does he get up to in there, anyway?) changes things, though, and accelerates their relationship faster than either of them had ever expected. How are they going to get through this new development together?
Atmospheric, beautifully-written and delicious. Their relationship is tender, just on the edge of something more, when they’re forced to quarantine together and face the effects of a potion that makes them see and feel things differently, which makes for the most intense, visual, gorgeous sex scene I think I’ve ever read. It’s just absolutely phenomenal.
8. i wake up falling - warmfoothills - 9k - M - Draco’s always leaving, one way or another. Harry’s usually 240 thousand miles too late.
In trying to come up with a way to summarize this story, I’m feeling the overwhelming urge to cry again, just like I did when I read it. It’s just so, so, beautiful, every single word of it aches in the best way, the longing feels deeply authentic and just, the setting and the jobs and everything is so unique and gorgeous. Every single work by this author is beyond beautiful, but especially this one is incredibly close to my heart and I think everyone should read it. It’s a gem.
9. In Every Universe - @skeptiquewrites - 27k - M - They sent Professor Harry Potter to search for Unspeakable Draco Malfoy. Draco has stolen a Firebird, an experimental magical device from the Department of Mysteries that lets you enter parallel universes as yourself. As Harry traverses from universe to universe, he begins to think Draco might be the one searching for him. A story about whether knowing what's possible makes it possible.
Stories where the characters find themselves somehow hopping from one reality to another are always so, so fascinating to me, and this one is incredibly creative and well-written, so entertaining all around. The mystery of it kept me on my toes, and every single reality was a joy to read. 10/10
10. Life goes not backward - @shealwaysreads - 8k - T - Harry still isn’t used to gifts, but this one is different. A story of coming home, finding safe ground, and the wild courage of putting down roots. Leaving one life behind isn’t always a sacrifice, and sometimes the greatest good comes from embracing the people you love.
My god, there are not enough words to describe how much this story means to me, how beautiful it is, how every single time I’ve read it, I’ve cried. Bella has undoubtedly become one of my absolute favorite writers in fandom. She has such a way with words, there is not one of her stories that hasn’t touched me, that doesn’t feel like an actual, full-length novel no matter the word count. I read so many of them this year, so many of the masterpieces she’s gifted us, but this one especially is so tender, so dear, that I ended up choosing it as my favorite of hers this year. Harry’s charactertization, the unbelievable warmth of their relationship, absolutely everything about this is gorgeous. Go read it, right now, and then binge all her other works!! You won’t regret it.
---------------------------------
Each of these fics is incredibly close to my heart and I enjoyed them immensely. In the midst of everything changing, I really found comfort and solace in the amazing works of the people of this fandom. I hope they give you the same amount of warmth and comfort they gave me, and I’m ALWAYS here to gush about any of them ❤️ Happy New Year!

Can we do multiples for this? If so, #8 and #12 for Drarry please 🥺👉🏻👈🏻
Sure!
8. Unpopular opinion about them
I am not a fan of drarry being depicted in canon universes as either 'cool masculine action hero harry'/'damsel in distress fragile draco' or 'sweet but kinda dumb and blundering harry'/'calm cool and collected ice prince draco' or 'enemies who still loathe and distrust each other postwar to very reluctant openly hostile allies to lovers.' All these dynamics are fine if you want to read/write them but the thing is...at least to me...they aren't drarry. And by reducing the characters to those dynamics you end up missing out on a lot of the nuance that makes the characters special and the ship interesting and you kinda flatten them into something pretty generic.
Contrary to popular fanon Harry is not dumb. He was supposed to be in Slytherin for a reason. He's very clever and observant and resourceful. And while he can be very kind and compassionate he also can be deadly when he needs to be and has a real temper that many people, even those close to him (though interestingly not Draco), can find intimidating at times. Draco also is a very good Occlumens and definitely matures a lot, but he's also not someone who is innately cold and dignified, much as he might wish to be. He's hot and firey and emotional too - just like Harry - but presents that in different ways. And yes in later books Draco often overcomes and masters his fears and emotions - because he has to - but it's not easy for him, and sometimes it all comes bursting out. And that makes him interesting and complex and human.
However Draco is also not a fragile damsel in distress. By the end of the series he is no longer the sheltered boy who once dramatically claimed to be "dying" because Buckbeak scratched him. He's been branded with the Dark Mark, been tortured by Voldemort himself, and used Unforgivables on others in turn - even if under duress. He's had to survive living with Voldemort and his followers in his house while he and his family were out of favor and virtually defenseless. He showed himself to be far more clever and resourceful than many would have given him credit for during book 6. In book 7 despite knowing intimately the terrible fate he was likely condemning himself and his family to if Harry & Co escaped, he didn't reveal the fact that he saw Ron & Harry had freed themselves from their bonds in the cell and didn't identify Harry and his friends, which bought them the time they needed to get away. He also held his own in a duel against Harry - who is extremely skilled - due to his quick reflexes, powerful magic, and strong ability to use nonverbal spells. Draco is tough and powerful in his own right, especially after the war and wouldn't just collapse into frightened hysterics at the slightest danger or find himself unable to fend off an angry group of younger students during 8th year.
He and Harry are equals and foils and parallels and opposites all at once. That's what makes their dynamic so interesting. They can stand up to each other and they never are afraid of each other - even when logic says they should be - and their skills and abilities and temperaments are extremely complimentary.
Also I love a good 'toxic dark bitterest of foes to lovers' fic but again, that doesn't feel like postwar drarry. They couldn't bring themselves to hate each other at the height of the war. Harry spent most of book 7 worrying about Draco. Draco risked everything for Harry at the Manor. They're not going to suddenly start a bitter feud after all the pressures pitting them against each other are gone. Postwar Draco would feel guilt and regret over his actions. And Harry, who lied for Draco after the Astronomy Tower Incident in book 6, is unlikely to suddenly decide he's angry Draco didn't end up in Azkaban. (Which is not to say he might not be suspicious of or curious about Draco's activities - but it wouldn't come from a place of hatred or openly vicious aggression.)
What's so fascinating and unique about this ship is that for all they are rivals and later enemies on the opposite sides of a war they don't hate and distrust each other the way you'd expect. Yes there's enmity and hostility. Yes they have to fight each other sometimes. But they also understand each other so deeply. And whenever one of them is actually in danger they always, always save each other.
It is this complex and contradictory relationship that makes them so interesting to me. And so unique compared to a lot of other ships and ship dynamics.
(I also wrote about an unpopular opinion for Draco here.)
12. Crack headcanon
There was a 7 year long 'will they or won't they' betting pool among an ever widening circle of students traumatized by having been subjected to their shenanigans.
Send me a character/ship from any fandom and a number.

what do you think of snape and draco
Vivi's Opinion on Snape
Very much NOT a character for me. I can love a bitter sarcastic asshole, but not when said bitter sarcastic assholery is directed to little kids that literally never asked for any of this.
He contributed to winning the war. Immensely. No, he's not an incel or a stalker. No, he's not "the Stalin to Voldemort's Hitler", what the actual fuck, people who use that comparison seriously please stop and reevaluate all your life choices thank you.
I do actually enjoy writing Snape because... thanks to him I get to absolutely tear a new one to Harry and Hermione right there in my fanfiction and you can't even say I'm doing bashing because it's not bashing, it's Snape. Thank you Severus for providing me with the opportunity to vent my bitterness about those characters in a totally inconspicuous way.
5/10. Not my cup of tea, might be yours. Helped protect the Hogwarts kids a lot, but what good is it to protect someone if you're gonna keep on bullying them afterwards? (If that reminds you of how James Potter saved Severus from the Whomping Willow only to have Snape's Worst Memory afterward, yes, yes I was making a parallel to that. Congrats Snape. You've successfully become what you most hated.)
Vivi's Opinion on Draco
Kill it.
I'm not kidding. I despise this thing from the deepest, darkest fathoms of my soul. To the point that I can't see it as a "human" character like I can conceivably do with Ron, or Hermione when she's not being Plot-Powered, or Harry sometimes occasionally.
You see, there's something I hate more than a bully... it's a bully that gets away with it. But not just get away, oh no. A bully that gets worshipped in spite of it. Because I saw it happen up close. I was down there in the mud and the bully was someone I thought my friend. That's probably why I feel an amount of sympathy for Barty Crouch Jr. I know the feel, dude. In a slightly less insane-obsessive-murdery-zealous way.
I will feel sympathy for Barty Crouch Jr who had a father that sucked so hard Voldemort managed to be a better one.
But Draco Malfoy? He had everything. Good parents who also happened to be fascist, eugenists assholes but were still good parents. A life of privilege, of never wanting for anything, of throwing tantrums and always getting his way.
Life then becomes kinda hard for him for a bit. Because Voldemort sucks. Voldemort sucks and still he was a better parental figure than Barty Crouch Sr can you believe, how the fuck. Anyway Draco Malfoy's life becomes kinda hard for a while. But he's still happy to try and give Harry&Co to Voldemort because hey he still wants to get cookie points in case Voldy wins.
... and the fandom then thinks that "he was a child" constitutes a reasonable excuse for all this shit.
Okay. Okay.
Fine, he was a child. Children can be horrid, hideous little bullies, yes, absolutely. He was a child, he didn't know better, so he threw slurs around like they're candy, yes, fine, that is true. He was a child... that gives him a pass for year 1 to 5, yeah, I can get that.
... I've yet to meet a child that smuggled a group of wanted terrorists inside his own school so they could have themselves a little murder party though. I've yet to meet a child who tried to murder someone multiple times and almost got multiple people killed as a result, though.
And most of all... most important of all... I've yet to seen a child who effectively does all that, and is immediately covered with sympathy and fanarts and woobie AMVs for it.
I despise Draco Malfoy. I loathe him, and everything he represents, and everytime I come accross someone who tries to justify his actions I feel this ulcer burn in my stomach. I've had to read with my own two eyes "bullying is never a choice" in regards to Draco Malfoy's behaviour. Oh really. Oh, really. My bullies never really made the choice to use their little bully legs and go out of their little bully way to plant their little bully ass in front of glasses-wearing, non-threatening, could-get-carried-off-by-a-mild-breeze-looking little Vivi... Every single day. Every single day, at every single recess, for five fucking years.
No. Absolutely not, of course. Of course they didn't have a choice. They absolutely never meant it when they called me names or threw stones at me. Nah, sometimes you see a good opportunity to be a bitch to someone and you just gotta use it, man, it's not like you were making a choice, your entire body spontaneously decided without your input that it was gonna harass someone and you couldn't stop it because, well, it's not like you had a choice right?
-1000000000/1. Revolting. Disgusting. Repulsive. Another reason why I don't like Harry is that he didn't let the bastard burn in the Fiendfyre. But then we'd get thousands upon thousands of """fix-it fics :)""" where Hermoanie Granger time-travels back to the Battle of Hogwarts to save her one twu wuv Dwako Malfucked from his fiery demise and I admit that this AU is not one I'd want to live in, blargh. Meh. Maybe I could've written a parody where Hermione, while saving Dwakkie-poo, catches fire and burns to a crisp along with him. I mean, Dramione is already the tale of a girl setting herself on fire to keep a bastard warm, so I'd just be speed-running it to its logical conclusion.

I lied. It'll get finished at some point, but first, whatever this is. Words: 4858, Chapters: 1/?, Language: English Fandoms: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Categories: F/F, F/M, M/M Characters: Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Ron Weasley, Harry Potter, Dennis Creevey, Neville Longbottom, Padma Patil, Parvati Patil, Theodore Nott, Draco Malfoy, Luna Lovegood Relationships: Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley, Theodore Nott/George Weasley Additional Tags: Overuse of italics, Hermione Granger is So Done, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Enemies to Lovers, The Ministry of Magic is Corrupt (Harry Potter), Ron Weasley Bashing, Wizarding Politics (Harry Potter), Draco Malfoy is insufferable, Cormac McLaggen is a fuckstick, Angry Hermione Granger, Eventual Smut, Eventual Romance, a little bit toxic, Hermione Granger is Bad at Feelings via AO3 works tagged 'Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy' https://ift.tt/n9fzmb1 February 04, 2025 at 01:04AM

Your highness,
I still have not finished to read the long cursed Harry Potter fanfiction, but since is a long story, i tough it would be nice to start recounting to you the tale of the first 15 (of the 100 of the first book of the fours book serie) chapters i had the "pleasure" to read.
It does not still reach level of cursed, but surely put some interesting bases.
Like i told in my previous letters, this is an old fanfiction, of the time before the serie was finished and the order of the Phoenix was out. It was when Cassandra Claire was powerful in the fandom, and certain plot point are for this inspired by her Draco trilogy.
It is so a post Hogwarts fanfiction, a Mary Sue fanfiction, a cheap porn fanfiction, and a cursed fanfiction.
Its name is Hogwarts Exposed.
I have not even any idea were to start, but:
-Ron has become a warewolf during one of the last year of school. Yes, everyone think the warewolf think make you gay, and this is used as a gag, and the parallels between warewolf and HIV are strong. We will never get out of that trope. Hykes. He is now a teacher at the school
-Harry after disappearing post war is now returning to teach. Big "he and Hermione were togheter than no more now they will return togheter" energy.
-Hermione is also a teacher. She is raped by madame Hooch, that also bit one of her nipple off. While Snape in a weirdly sexual tension scene recompose her nipple, we discover she is not the first victim. That summer madame Hooch had raped an 11 years old and left her to die in the forest. She was found and saved.
-They 11 years old, Caitlin, is one of our Mary Sues. She is adopted after a few weeks by Hermione cause shared trauma and perfect togheter.
-The real big Mary Sue is Jamie. Now. Everything is with her. She is the perfect mix of Harry and Hermione, and the author will hammer this every fucking scene, she is beautiful, she is fun, she is perfect, she have a magic pony puppet, and, above all, she is 15 and a nudist.
And you think, a nudist? Yeah. This is were the cheap porn part come in. Jamie like to be nude. In her room she is always nude. So many description of her body while she walk nude. Sometimes she does not remember she is nude and go out in the garden like this. In 15 chapters she convince Caitlin to become also a nudist, Caitlin convince Hermione to become a nudist, all the Griffondor house start becoming nudists. It is told in some chapters it will just to be considered noone will dress no more.
And where the cursed start? Well. Madame Hooch, of course, with a plot just started, that we know will surely rape someone else. And, more importantly, the neverending ephobilphilia. Jamie want to give her virginity to Harry cause he saved her when she was little. Harry have plenty of tought about her AND Caitlin (the 11 years old). At the end of chapter 14 he propose to Hermione, that make Caitlin also his daughter, just to add a bit of more layers. So many description of the Mary Sues without panties. So many discourse about "wizards age differently so Harry and Hermione for how much they are 24 are in a 15 years old body". Also, like always, unfortunate holocaust parallels, cause people have no idea how to NOT write them apparently.
This is just the start. You can start feeling the whatever will happen simmering behind all of this, but is still soon. I know there will be other rape, sex, orgy, scat, violence, dismemberment, and lot, LOT, of really strange and kinda bigot and probably racist things.
I will write again.
Dearie me, it seems your research has indeed run deep. I shall rate this a 9/10 for the holocaust references and the effort u have put forth

UNREQUITED MASTERLIST
-
PART 7
Everyone around the table discussed their holiday plans. You managed to slip out of the Hufflepuff table and you were sitting comfortably with the Gryffindors. Hermione and Harry gushed about missing Mrs. Weasley and her positive energy. They talked about last Christmas and how festive the Burrow was.
“It’s more festive than Hogwarts, if you could believe that!” Fred would exclaim every year. You knew it was probably true. You felt like the ambience of the Weasley home made the holidays feel even better than the expensive decorations of Hogwarts. That’s what the holidays are about, anyway: family, celebration, comfort.
This year was a bit different. Usually you’d spend your holidays with Cedric and his father. You’d wake up on Christmas day with Cedric silently reading at the foot of your bed- he always woke up at the first sign of light during the holidays. He’d have two mugs of hot chocolate, topped with crushed candy canes and whipped cream. He’d never touch his, no matter how tempted he was to do so, just so he could take his first sip with you. You’d exchange presents in your room, savoring your alone time before Mr. Diggory would barge into your room with Christmas pancakes and you three would happily skip downstairs where you celebrated for the day. Then, when the snow fell, you’d make them watch Muggle holiday movies and Cedric would question exactly why Muggles always made their lives more difficult than needed.
But now you don’t have Cedric and it would be awkward to spend it with his father. It wasn’t the same. You decided to stay in school for the holidays, not really knowing where else to go.
Fred waved his hands in front of your face, “Helloooo, Y/N?”
“Yes, Fred?”
“We asked what you’re doing for the holidays.” Hermione asked, taking a sip of her drink.
You shrugged, picking at the food on your plate, “I’m staying here for the holidays. I usually spend it with the Diggory’s but well, y’know..”
“Nonsense! You can spend it with us!” George grinned.
“Mother and father wouldn’t mind.” Fred added on.
“I wouldn’t want to intrude.” You blushed, a sheepish look on your face.
“Hermione and Harry intrude every year.” Ron chuckled, wincing in pain when Hermione hit his arm. “If you’d let me finish, Merlin, Hermione. You’ve got a heavy hand. Anyway, we love their intrusion every year. You should come.”
“Are you sure?” You asked, making sure that they weren’t just saying it out of pity.
“Well, of course!” Fred said. “There’s nothing like a Weasley Christmas.”
You nodded, happy that you didn’t have to spend it alone. It would be a bit odd this year not having Cedric beside you. But things were changing and you knew you had to adapt. Things were never going to be the same. Things were different now.
Speaking of different- things between you and Draco changed ever since the day you saw him with Myrtle. You two didn’t speak on it, but deep down you both knew something about each other that neither of you expected to learn. There’s this energy between you and Draco that you couldn’t put your finger on. Every time he walked past you and your friends, he’d offer a warm smile and a small wave of acknowledgement. He stopped teasing the Trio and even snickered at some of the twins’ jokes at times, but only when nobody but you was paying attention to him. He’d greet you when he sits behind you in Potions, not scared to ask you for help when he needs it. Sometimes you even catch him staring in the Great Hall. You’ve gotten used to his lingering eyes.
That’s why it felt like there was something missing when you searched for the blond in the Great Hall during dinner and found him nowhere. Usually he’d be sitting beside Crabbe and Goyle, picking at his food and offering patient laughs at Crabbe’s jokes. Tonight, however, he was missing from his usual spot, his absence obviously taking a toll on the Slytherin table. You searched for him, twisting and turning your body to see if he decided to sit somewhere else for once. Draco was nowhere to be found.
George finished his joke and the entire table roared in laughter, bringing you back to your present conversations. Ron had to clasp a hand over his mouth to stop him from spitting out his drink, finding his brothers’ jokes so hilarious. Hermione sat beside you, her head thrown back in laughter, directly parallel from Harry, who hid his face in the crease of his elbow. Fred sat across from you, eyebrows furrowing once he noticed that you weren’t present in the conversation.
“You alright there, Y/N?” He whispered, trying not to cause attention. The rest of the group continued on, oblivious to your conversation.
“I’m fine.” You lied, giving him a tight-lipped smile. “Just tired.”
You knew Fred didn’t buy it. He knew you too well but he nodded anyway and cleared his throat, “You should go up and rest, Y/N.”
You thanked him silently, knowing that the rest of the group heard it. You didn’t have to explain yourself to the rest of them now that Fred has your back. You said your goodbye’s and was met with farewells as you walked out of the Great Hall. You didn’t even know where you’re heading. Hell, you didn’t even know if Draco was still on school grounds. You didn’t have classes with him today.
You turned the corner, seeing a few people scattered all over the place. None of them sported the blond hair that you’re searching for. You saw a few Slytherin robes tucked in the crevices of the castle, kissing noises echoing in the space. You grimaced and stayed away from them.
“Are you looking for Draco?”
You turned your head like a deer caught in headlights. Your eyes fell on Luna, who sat on the floor with a book on her lap. Her eyes twinkled under the lights, her voice soft and pure. You replied, “Am I that obvious?”
“No,” She reassured. “I’m just observant.”
You blushed, unable to form a coherent sentence in response. “Yeah, uhm… have you seen him?”
“Yes I have. He went towards the Astronomy Tower after Charms.” She stood up, dusting off her robe as she pointed to the direction of the tower. “I haven’t seen him pass by since then.”
You nodded, not knowing what to say back. “Alright. Well, thank you, Luna.”
You took a few steps towards the direction of the Tower, mentally cursing yourself for staring at Draco so obviously. Luna called for you one more time before you disappeared from her vision. You turned and she smiled at you, “Don’t wait too long this time around.”
Her words rung in your head. What did she mean by that? The whole time to the tower, you pondered what her words meant. You were so focused on thought that you almost missed the entrance to the staircase, having to walk backwards to get to the right destination. You walked up, trying to be as quiet as possible, just in case there was a teacher there ready to get you in trouble.
Once you reached the top, you felt a sense of relief wash over you when you saw the head of blond you’ve been searching for, leaning against the barricade, the same way he was the first time you saw him up here. There were tear stains on his cheeks, eyes bloodshot red. His lips were bright pink, quivering ever so slightly. You didn’t know if it was because of the cold or because of his emotions. Or maybe both.
“Draco?” You called, emerging from the stairs.
Draco faced you, eyes widening when he realized you found him. He quickly wiped the tears from his face with his sleeve, subconsciously tugging on it as he approached you towards the middle of the room. “Y/N, what are you doing here?”
“You weren’t there at dinner.” You stated simply. You watched him fidget with his robe, uncomfortable that you found him during one of his most vulnerable moments. “I got a little worried.”
“I’m fine.” He dismissed, sniffling. He bit his bottom lip, walking back to where he first stood. “You’re like the fifth person to walk up here. I guess it’s not as secret as I thought.”
You let out a chuckle, following his footsteps and planting yourself beside him. You watched him hold back tears, nostrils flaring to keep his tears at bay. “Are you okay, Draco?”
He looked at you, a lopsided smile making its way to his lips. His eyes, however, were screaming, begging for help. It was a miserable sight. “Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be?”
Out of habit, you placed a hand on his shoulder, giving it a light squeeze. He tensed under your touch, freezing as if your touch burned him. Draco looked at your hand on his body as if he’s never been touched like this before. You rubbed your thumb against his robe, watching as he relaxed under your touch. He let out a breath of relief, closing his eyes for a brief second.
“It’s okay if you’re not okay.”
“Okay.”
A comfortable silence fell upon the both of you. You recalled your hand after a few moments, not missing the way he followed it, missing the comfort it provided him already. Draco stared off into the skyline, eyes counting the stars that were bright enough to see. He counted them like sheep to help him calm down. You stared at him, admiring his features.
Draco was really handsome, you knew that, but this was the first time you got to take a good look at him. The curve of his nose, his cupid’s bow, his eyes- beautiful in color but sorrowful in story- and his cheeks, blushed pink in it’s high points. His jawline was sharp but he didn’t look intimidating like this. He looked peaceful. It almost didn’t look like the Draco Malfoy everyone knew of.
“You loved him, didn’t you?” He asked after a while of silence. He cocked his head to the side, waiting for you to answer. “Cedric, I mean. You loved him?”
You pursed your lips, not knowing where this conversation was going. “Yes.”
“Do you still love him?”
“Yes, I do.” You responded, not missing a beat. “I think a part of me always will.”
“Hm.”
“Why do you ask?” You wondered out loud, inching closer to him.
“I was just curious.” Draco paused before continuing his sentence. “Did you ever tell him?”
“Not exactly,” You confessed, picking at your nails. “One of my biggest regrets, actually. But I like to think he knew that I did.”
“I don’t think he knew.”
“What makes you say that?” You inquired, truly curious as to why Draco would say that. As far as you knew, he didn’t know you or Cedric in that way. It was odd that he was speaking about it like he knew the story. You didn’t mind- it just took you by surprise.
“I think-” He paused again, rephrasing his sentence. “I know that if he knew how you felt, you two would’ve been together.” Draco bit his lip. “I don’t think anyone who’s in love with you who knew you felt the same way, would hide their affections. They would scream it from the top of their lungs.”
“Oh.” You didn’t know what to say. Was that a compliment? You didn’t know. You couldn’t be too sure. The way he worded things was trivial. Although, maybe that was the point. Keep his mysterious side going, per se, rather than coming right out and saying what he is he wants to say, leaving you to guess his meaning.
Draco cleared his throat, “Any holiday plans?”
“I’m spending it with the Weasleys.”
You half-expected him to grimace at the Weasley name, but he let his lips quirk up a bit. He looked down, shuffling his feet. Draco could only imagine how lively their household must be. He knew the Weasley’s were a neverending bloodline and they often brought over friends to celebrate the holidays with them. He was sure it was a clear contrast from the holidays at the Malfoy Manor- quiet, reserved, tense. Nothing like what the holidays should feel like.
“That’s lovely.”
You nudged him with your elbow, “And yourself?”
“I’m going home.” His voice sounded strained, as if the word “home” was painful to say. Then he chuckled bitterly, sarcasm dripping from his tongue. “You never want to miss a holiday at Malfoy Manor.”
You gulped, “I’m sorry, Draco.”
Before he could reply, you were interrupted by the sounds of kisses and giggling. Two Ravenclaws made their way up the stairs, oblivious that you and Draco were already there. They giggled under each other’s touch, ties being undone, and sexual tension running high.
“Bloody hell,” Draco cursed, annoyance in his voice. “They always come up here.”
You didn’t even think before you grabbed his hand. In surprise, you looked up at him and his face mirrored yours. His hands were cold, too cold, almost. He stared at your intertwined fingers, breath hitched in his throat. He could feel your heat radiating off of your hand. He’s never held anyone’s hand before.
“Come,” You pulled him along, trying to ignore the tingling sensation. “I know a better place.”
You let his hand go once you two were half-way down the stairs. When your back was facing him, he stared at his hand, unable to wipe the smile on his face. You held his hand. Nobody ever does that. You took a glance at him, blushing when you saw the goofy grin on his face as he stared at his hand. Draco never smiles. He has a beautiful smile.
You led him to the secret passageway, looking around to make sure there was nobody around to see you. You instructed him to stay back as you opened it, as you’ve done a million times before.
“Is this where you were going the night I caught you?”
“Yeah,” You confessed, shutting the door behind you once he entered. “Me and Cedric used to come down through here when we just needed to get away.”
“Where does it lead you?”
“The middle of the meadows, a bit outside of the castle grounds.” You said, taking a right turn. You knew this place like the back of your hand. “It’s private. Peaceful.”
The rest of the time, you two were quiet until you got to your destination. You sighed in content, plopping down on the field, a look of serenity etched on your face. He joined you, a few meters away, sitting criss-crossed. Draco watched you get comfortable, as if you’ve done this all your life.
“I didn’t know there was a way here that’s different from the main road.” He said. “I thought I saw you here a few days ago but I figured it wasn’t you since I didn’t see you come down.”
“You were here.” You mumbled, moving closer to him. “I thought I saw you. What were you doing out here?”
“My father needed to see me.” He looked down, clearing his throat to change the subject. “I didn’t know you knew Myrtle.”
“I could say the same about you.”
“Yeah,” He chuckled. “I don’t usually tell people that.”
“Of course, the Slytherin Prince has a reputation to uphold.”
“You know it.” He joked but his tone told you something else. He sounded tired, almost as if he didn’t want to be that anymore. “I have a question.”
“Mhm?”
“Don’t hex me, alright?”
You froze a bit, knowing what question will come next, but you let him ask it anyway. “No promises.”
“What house are you supposed to be in?”
“I think you know.”
“Why didn’t you want to be a Slytherin?”
You sighed, staring at the sky for a second before answering. “My father was a Slytherin. He came from a pure blood family but then he met my mother. She’s a Muggle and it caused problems when they fell in love. He was disowned from his family. He made me take my mother’s maiden name, fearing for my life. He made us hide. It was one of my first memories. They killed him and found my mother. I was left with the Diggory’s so I was safe the night she died. I lived with my mother’s sister in the Muggle world but spent my summers with Cedric so I stayed in touch with my Wizard side.”
“Why did they want him dead?”
“He didn’t want to serve the Dark Lord. He-”
“Stop talking.” Draco quickly cut you off, suddenly getting up from his spot. “Stop.”
“What?”
“Don’t…” He breathed out, already making his way back to the passageway. “Don’t tell me that.”
“Draco?”
“Y/N.” He said sternly. “I said stop talking. The less I know the better.”
You kept your mouth shut the rest of the night, the tension thick in the air.
