I know you're more of a boney animal blog, but could you pls let folks know about these poor Australian peacock spiders? In 2 months, the only place they live is due to be bulldozed in favor of urban crawl. https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/peacock-spiders-dance-for-their-lives-as-perth-sprawl-threat-looms-20240808-p5k0qa.html

Brenthia Moths: these moths can mimic the appearance and mannerisms of a jumping spider so convincingly that actual jumping spiders will sometimes attempt to court them
The markings, posture, and movements of a Brenthia moth (genus Brenthia, also known as a metalmark moth) all contribute to its disguise; the moths move around in short, jerky motions that mimic the movements of a jumping spider, and their hindwings are covered in black-and-white bands that strongly resemble the tucked-in legs of a salticiid spider, especially when the moth displays its unique wing position. The disguise serves as a defensive strategy, enabling the moth to avoid being preyed upon by actual jumping spiders.
In some cases, that disguise may work a little too well, as jumping spiders may actually mistake the moth for a potential mate and then attempt to engage it in a courtship/mating dance (which must be a pretty awkward and bizarre experience for the moth, tbh).
The resemblance between a Brenthia moth and a jumping spider may not seem terribly convincing to us, as human beings, but as this article explains:
When discussing animals mimicking their predator, it is important to remember that we humans are not the target audience. This means that the imitator may not look too convincing in its mimicry to us, but still manages to trigger a desired response from said predator.
Jumping spiders have also been known to respond to Brenthia moths by exhibiting a territorial display, which is yet another behavior that the spiders generally reserve for other spiders.
This study expands on the adaptive benefits of the moth's disguise:
In controlled trials, Brenthia had higher survival rates than other similarly sized moths in the presence of jumping spiders and jumping spiders responded to Brenthia with territorial displays, indicating that Brenthia were sometimes mistaken for jumping spiders, and not recognized as prey.
The illustration below shows the basic/general resemblance between a Brenthia moth and a jumping spider:

How about Maratus rainbowi? (a silly lookin type of peacock spider ^^)
The silly guy from Webbed! Magnificent. I'll be doing the poll on Maratus spendens, because Maratus rainbowi seems to be an inactive taxon. I've included a picture of a female, just for fun.

therians in the pokémon universe would be so funny because just imagine what the discourse would be like
“there’s too many Eevee therians, there’s probably a lot of people faking”
“you can’t identify as a Caterpie because *insert stupid reason*”
“any dragon type clado-therians?”
“there can’t be any Ghost type therians because of what that implies”
#pokemon#therian#therianthropy#my main theriotype is Peacock Spider so the pokémon equivalent would be something like joltik which is very cool#mozzyspurt talks

I have been working on an Angel Dust redesign/rework for a bit but I've sort of stalled at adapting his story while being respectful. When I fully figure them out, I'll make a more formal post with more final art.
I really love arthropods, especially chelicerates which are what spiders/scorpions/horseshoe crabs are. I had a whole college report on arthropods so I'm gonna get a bit rambly about them. First of all, spider butt is called a thorax and Angel's prob needs some resizing her to make everything more balanced. I wanted to give them 8 legs and have their arms represent pediplaps, the little "hands" spiders have. Then the actual fangs of a spider (called chelicerae) are on the sides of Angel's head. The eyes have no anatomical basis, but having 2 be larger than the others is a jumping spider thing, which is the kinda fuzzy spider I imagine Angel is supposed to represent. Anyway, Angel is very rarely in full drider form, usually just having 2 legs present.
I am considering retooling Angel's story completely so that it is about the importance of engaging with bdsm & fantasies in a safe way, (Using safe words, not using things that could actually harm your partner, aftercare). Angel would start out loving working at Val's because he gets to engage in a lot of fantasies he has and get paid for it... but he gets advertised as "no limits" and he prides himself on not using safe words. His arc would involve realizing he can still engage with these fantasies while being safe & cared for as he breaks away from Val. Verity (Hellbound Hostel's Vaggie) would also have a bit of an arc in tandem with Angel where she has to reckon with sex just being a part of being human and shouldn't be considered a sin on it's own.
I wouldn't be trying to write something that makes a statement on sex work, but more of a message on safe sex over preaching abstinence... but I'm not sure I'm really experienced enough to tackle that? Please let me know if you have thoughts or criticisms over any of this.
