Listening: It's important to put music on while there are people kicking around the house to fill in the gaps, a lot of that has been Vienna Teng, so, Green Island Lullaby :
youtube
Also as another note, I am closing in on the end of The Magnus Archives, and I like some of the stuff of this last season. It gets to get a lot more into absolute horror when it doesn't have to reasonably fit into the real world and I appreciate a lot of that, I've always liked my short story to veer a little abstract.
Watching: After my parents left for Amsterdam I was like "hey I should watch something" and put on Funeral Parade of Roses/Bara no Soretsu, which is such a banger of a movie if you love queer art films from five minutes after we invented the concept of editing and horrible tragedy. We should make more extremely heavy movies that include within themselves comedic making-of documentaries.
Also, courtesy of @canmom's Animation Night, Mars Express, a very beautiful robot sentience animated movie by Jérémie Périn. It follows a Space Cop who ends up working with a renegade engineer who jailbreaks sentient slave robots. Extremely space-noir. Extremely detailed world of future-tech, thoughtful design, and a by-the-numbers but well-executed plot. If you like cyber neo-noir you'll love it, also check out Animation Night on twitch.tv/canmom most Sundays at 20:00 UK time, truly a gem, the first place I watched PMMM.
Reading: All but finished with Iron Widow, it's a shame that it's not a very good book because it feels like much more aggressive editing could have saved it. There's so many words and maybe 30% of them don't have to be there, this book loves to tell instead of showing, or to show and then tell you all about what it's shown you. Again, very compelling setting and themes, the way that being in a mech transcends your material form while simultaneously making you very responsible for other people is a great idea!
Zetian is a clumsy protagonist in-world, which is fine if frustrating. She's not calculating enough to pull off Taylor Hebert long-term plans and careful considerations, but she's not impulsive enough to get into interesting problems for very long, there's lots of opportunity to create intrigue that just get snipped in the bud because she decides not to care, which means a lot of threats just aren't very credible.
Playing: Hades! I got tutored through a full clear and had the boons system laid out to me and I have now got a clear with every weapon except the fists, and that's only because I haven't gotten around to it yet. I still don't think I enjoy the way the narrative of Hades is presented, but I am appreciating the gameplay, I enjoy enginebuilder-likes like this, you know, Inscryption, Noita, that kind of thing.
Making: Not much, too busy.
Tools and Equipment: I picked up a LowePro Creator Box, which is their line of mini-camera storage cubes intended to help turn normal bags into camera bags. Transporting camera equipment is a huge pain in the ass, because you have to keep it all padded, but dedicated camera bags are frequently awful as, you know, bags. Lowepro does make some camera bags that are also okay day packs, but these boxes are really nice for just dumping into an existing backpack or carry-on to safely travel with a camera and a couple lenses. This is the Large size.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a line of outdoor backpacks that even let you access your box from a side hatch directly, but I don't have one of those. This makes it much easier for me to, say, hoof my camera to work when I have somewhere I want to go later in the day. There's some gigantic cubes for larger bags as well which I guess are for if you're doing wildlife photography on foot, or running a full production in a remote area.

Exploring the Freedom of Self-Drive Car Rentals
In today's fast-paced world, flexibility and independence are highly valued, especially when it comes to travel. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway, a business trip, or an extended vacation, having control over your transportation can significantly enhance your experience. This is where self-drive car rentals come into play, offering a perfect blend of convenience, freedom, and cost-effectiveness.
The Rise of Self-Drive Car Rentals
The concept of self drive car rental has gained immense popularity over the past few years. With the advent of digital platforms and mobile apps, renting a car has become simpler than ever. Companies like Zoomcar, Drivezy, and Myles have revolutionized the way we think about car rentals, providing a seamless and user-friendly experience.
Benefits of Self-Drive Car Rentals
Flexibility and Independence: One of the most significant advantages of self-drive car rentals is the freedom it offers. You're not bound by taxi schedules or dependent on public transportation. You can travel at your own pace, make spontaneous stops, and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Cost-Effective: Self drive car rental can be more economical compared to hiring a chauffeur-driven car or relying on ride-hailing services for longer durations. You save on driver charges and tips, and if you're traveling with a group, the costs can be shared, making it even more affordable.
Wide Range of Options: Rental companies offer a diverse fleet of vehicles to suit various needs and preferences. From compact cars for city travel to SUVs for rugged terrains and luxury cars for special occasions, there's a car for every requirement.
Privacy and Comfort: With a self-drive rental, you have the entire vehicle to yourself, offering privacy and comfort. This is particularly beneficial for families and couples who value their personal space.
Enhanced Travel Experience: Driving through scenic routes, stopping for picturesque views, and exploring hidden gems at your leisure can significantly enhance your travel experience. You're not just a passenger; you're in control of your journey.
Key Considerations for Renting a Self-Drive Car
While the benefits are numerous, there are some important factors to keep in mind when opting for a self-drive car rental:
Documentation: Ensure you have all necessary documents, including a valid driving license, identification proof, and sometimes an international driving permit if you're in a foreign country.
Insurance: Verify the insurance coverage provided by the rental company. It's crucial to understand what is covered in case of an accident or damage to the vehicle.
Vehicle Inspection: Before hitting the road, thoroughly inspect the car for any pre-existing damage and ensure it's recorded in the rental agreement. This helps avoid disputes when returning the vehicle.
Rental Agreement: Read the rental agreement carefully, including terms related to fuel policy, mileage limits, and late return charges.
Navigation and Connectivity: Ensure the car is equipped with a reliable GPS system or have a good navigation app on your phone. Also, check for connectivity options like Bluetooth for a hassle-free drive.
Top Self-Drive Car Rental Companies
Several companies have established themselves as leaders in the self-drive car rental market, offering reliable services and a wide range of vehicles:
Zoomcar: Known for its extensive presence across India, Zoomcar offers flexible rental plans and a user-friendly app for bookings.
Drivezy: Another popular choice, Drivezy provides a variety of vehicles, including bikes, at competitive prices.
Myles: Catering to both short-term and long-term rentals, Myles has a diverse fleet and a strong focus on customer satisfaction.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car: A global leader in car rentals, Enterprise offers a comprehensive range of vehicles and exceptional service standards.
Conclusion
Self-drive car rentals are transforming the way we travel, providing unparalleled freedom, flexibility, and convenience. Whether you're embarking on a road trip, exploring a new city, or simply need a car for daily use, self-drive rentals offer a practical and enjoyable solution. By considering the key factors and choosing a reputable rental company, you can ensure a smooth and memorable driving experience. Oracle - Intro : Sibyl
June Drabbles 2022 Days 26 & 27 - Universe & Neon Sign
A/N: So we all know by now that I completely missed the mark on finishing all of these in the month of June. One of these days I will complete a challenge on time. Maybe. But I have had a lot of fun writing these drabbles/stories, and with only a few more to go I’m powering through the rest of them. This one is actually a bit different from the rest, because it is for something that I have been plotting and planning (and stressing about getting right) for roughly a year, but when I saw these two prompts I took it as a sign (and you’ll see why that’s appropriate) to finally get the ball rolling on this soulmate au series. I’ve never written the soulmate trope before, and I am nervous to try... but I’m also excited and I hope that you enjoy where it’s going... and that you don’t hate me too much. ;)
Word Count: 2,800
Warning: death, violence, language, theft
Summary: Years of job hopping and point pinching have finally put Ezra in a position to take a step up - literally out of the gutter-gunked scud puddles of Cirian Central, but also out of the slow sinking pit of debt and dying dreams that he’d been languishing in for too long. But just as his luck takes a turn for the better, something else lands hard and haphazardly in his lap - fate. And not just his own. So will he follow the fortune... or the fortune teller?
Tumblr media
A deluge of grimey water splashed against the dingy window that Ezra leaned against, looking out as the storm drains from mid were emptied onto the rooftops, sidewalks and unsuspecting heads of those on the lowest level. He grimaced as a nearby man got drenched by two levels worth of rainwater, debris, fuel oil and Kevva knows what else. I know what else. This entire planet is a pus-stained scab on the Cirian sector. The unfortunate, muck covered man was either uncaring of or unfamiliar with the drainage system in that portion of the city, but Ezra had plenty of practice when it came to dodging the showers of street slick that rained on the ground level every quarter cycle. Central was his home planet, after all.
Or at least it was where he hailed from. He hadn’t called it home since the first time that he left it - as a sixteen year old stowaway on a trash transport headed for the Bahkroma System, forged documents aging him by three years stuffed into his pocket. But if he was being honest with himself, it hadn’t been home since well before then. He had no nostalgic notions, no rose-tinted memories made there to feel fondly for the place. Docking on Central between jobs was never something that Ezra looked forward to, and he always sought to leave again as quickly as he could. For a while he did everything in his power to find work that would keep him off-world for several standard years at a time, taking odd jobs on benches and freighters and places where he could negotiate lodging into his pay. His plan had been to save his points for all the equipment that he would need to start the career of his dreams - digging for aurelac, toxic environment and all. He got hired to his first crew a few days after his twentieth birthday, and in two decades he hadn’t looked back.
Though there were several other mining trades he could have gotten into that wouldn’t have required the life support suit and filtration hose, none of them paid nearly close to what he knew prospectors on the Green Moon made when they sold their gems. He understood the math of it. The deadlier the job, the higher the payout, and there weren’t many professions more potentially hazardous than the one he wanted to make his own. News of the rush had only amplified his drive, Ezra’s eyes growing wide as he read about pearls rumored to be the size of fully grown channel-rats. The location of the theorized rhizomatic deposit that the prospecting guild had dubbed The Queen’s Lair was unknown, but Ezra chose to believe that if it was real, he would find it.
I’d finally be free of the debts I’ve carried all these years. They weren’t insurmountable - he was still paying off loans that he’d taken to upgrade some of his equipment - but the fact that he was tethered by such a seemingly in reach number of points made them feel steeper than they were on the record. It was why he had started sneaking small, lower grade gems into the hidden pouches that he’d sewn into his suit, smuggling them back to Cirian to sell to the fence he met at the pub he frequented when he was forced to stay there between stands on the Green. It upped the risk even more, but the math continued to check out, Ezra’s earnings going up as well. Not exactly what I envisioned, but… If I find the Queen’s Lair it won’t matter. He watched the last drops of filthy water slide down the glass and sighed. And I’d finally be able to afford more luxurious accommodations than the inns down here in this scud-crusted sludge puddle. If he had his druthers though, he wouldn’t stay on the mid or top tiers, either. If given the choice of anywhere to spend his free time, he’d pick Kamrea or Cardovan or Lao. Anywhere but Central, really.
At least it’s only a couple of days this time. Just a handful of cycles. He grinned to himself as he pushed the door open and stepped out of the bar, a few mugs of mash mead sloshing around in his belly and his brain to give him a pleasant buzz. He hadn’t met with Geyser this time, and Ezra briefly wondered if his blackmarket connection hadn’t gotten himself caught. But when no one came to slap cuffs on him as he took a seat in one of the open stools and ordered a drink, he determined that Geyser likely got drunk in some other sinkhole and forgot that they were meant to meet, or else he’d struck a deal with another thief for higher quality pearls or fewer points. It didn’t matter much to him, not with the offer he’d just accepted to join a crew that was setting out to find the Lair - and not returning until they had unearthed it. This could very well be the last time I ever find myself here.
With that thought, and a handful of pebble pearls he would have sold to Geyser still burning holes in his pocket, he strode down the dark alley and out towards the glow of artificial lights. He had no idea what time it was, but down on the third level it didn’t matter if it was night or day. It didn’t matter that Cirian Central had two suns or that its moon was the brightest and largest in the sector. The substructure of the cities that covered the planet’s surface blocked out the sky at ground level. Even if it didn’t, there was an ever present haze from steam valves and factory vents that hung in the air that acted like an opaque filter, muting everything to a dim shade of gray. The only light that far down came from the various signs that flashed in vibrant colors boasting bars, brothels, brokers and anything else transients and vagabonds like him might need. The constant buzz of the flickering neons created a white noise that was only broken by the wet slopping sounds of the drain pipes from above, footsteps of people that came too close, or the hacking coughs of Fringelings like him, leaning in doorways and against dripping brick walls as they smoked their fire hash blunts down to their fingers.
It had been a few years since he’d smoked one, and for a snippet of a second he thought about trying to barter with one of the men for a little bit of leaf, rolling the smooth but cloudy gem grains in his pocket between his fingers. He knew someone would take that trade, even if they had no idea what the street price of aurelac or fire hash was. But if he wanted to feel the effects all he’d have to do was stroll down Stinger’s Alley and suck in the smoke. And that’s not what I want to do right now anyway. He needed to find accommodations for the next two nights, and once that was taken care of he would be back in one of the bars, celebrating the change in his fate that was just on the horizon with another mug or three of mash mead. The purple lettering of the Astral Hotel’s sign hummed in the distance, the S and both Ls smashed so that when lit it actually read A tra Hote, and since Ezra had stayed there a few times before and knew exactly what to expect - the damaged neon tubes advertising the place were quite an accurate representation of what it was like on the inside, too - he headed off in that direction, the grainy gems still rattling between his fingers.
But before he could cross the street, a woman emerged from a curtained doorway and stepped directly and intentionally in front of him. Her wide brown eyes were shining and shaking as they locked onto his, and though it would have been easy to brush the look off by assuming that she had inhaled too many vapors from the fire hash and steam valves, Ezra got the immediate feeling that she was stone sober. Her shoulder length hair had likely once been golden blonde, but now, like everything on this level of the city it had started going silvery gray, and she kept it tied back with a red head scarf, that and the beaded bracelets clacking together on her bony wrists as she reached for him the only splash of brightness that didn’t come from the buzzing lights. What in-
“You don’t know how to find her, do you?” Her hands clasped around his arms, the woman stronger than she appeared, and Ezra was so stunned by the sudden contact that he simply froze. What? Who?
Blinking, he shook his head and wrinkled his brow, and then gently lifted his arms to try to shrug her off without touching her. “I think you might have the wrong person, ma’am. I’m not sure who you’re referring to, but-”
She only doubled down, fingers gripping the worn fabric of his waffle-knit pullover. “The woman you’ve seen. In the flashes.”
She scanned his face for a reaction and he knew that he gave her one, his mouth dropping open as he sucked in a breath. How does she know about… I’ve never- He blinked again, and a pair of eyes that were far more familiar to him than any he’d ever looked actually into came to the forefront of his mind. Her. The woman whose laughter he felt in his heart when he was happy, whose anguish he tasted when tears stung his own eyes. The woman he’d never met and always assumed had been nothing more than a figment of his imagination. The ghost in his dreams. But they aren’t just dreams… Sometimes I see her while I’m awake, too.
“The woman who always dies in your arms.”
That drove the buzz right out of his blood and left a chill in its place.
The woman who always died in his arms - who he was never able to save. She’d drowned and he’d been too late to pull her from the water. She’d been shot and he hadn’t acted quickly enough to patch her up. She’d been poisoned, stabbed, struck by a vehicle, attacked by an animal. No matter how many flashes Ezra got of her smiling, safe, sleeping or even sighing into his ear, they were outnumbered by the ones that ended with her death.
“How in Kevva’s name do you know about that? About her?” Because I’ve never told a soul. Not a single scud-sucking soul.
“I know a lot about you, Ezra. We’ve been here before.”
His heartbeat quickened and his tongue suddenly went dry and thick in his mouth, the air in his lungs going stale. “If this has anything to do with Geyser, I-”
She waved one ring encrusted hand to cut him off. “I don’t concern myself with black market activity. What you choose to do with the pebbles in your pockets is unimportant.” He bristled, even as the woman took her other hand away from his arm. “What I need to tell you is far more pressing than five and a half points in cloudy aurelac.”
Is this a setup? Ezra glanced up and over her shoulders, eyes darting left and right to make sure that no one was watching or lurking on a nearby stoop. Shoving his right hand in his pocket, he felt the creamy texture of the unpolished pearls against the pads of his fingers. There were exactly five and a half points worth. How is-
He was hit then with another flash.
Inky black darkness that swallowed the tree line. A crackling flame that spit and snapped with wet wood, sparks swirling upwards with the smoke. A stripped down, hopper-style landing pod that didn’t look operational. And a woman imprisoned in a glass booth that was lit by harsh white neons. Her body was covered in some kind of pink powdered substance, and a golden mask obscured most of her face. But her eyes opened, and Ezra knew them. Another flash and there she was, draped in the crook of his left arm, face tipped up towards his and gasping for air.
But this time his ghost didn’t die.
This time he yanked the emergency hose attached to his gear and sealed it over her mouth and nose. This time he wasn’t too late or too slow. This time he had what he needed to save her. To save you.
When he blinked again you were gone and he was back in his body on the streets of Cirian Central, breathing hard as the clairvoyant woman clutched at one of his arms with both of her thin hands. “Come inside unless you want to get slime soaked,” she urged when he finally looked down at her. What? “The drains, Ezra.” She pointed upwards. “They’re due to-” Shit.
He nodded, letting her pull him through the curtain and into her shop just as the drain valve twisted to slop greasy gray water down on the place where he’d just been standing. But that wasn’t what mattered. And at this point, the moon rocks in his pocket didn’t matter either. She… she’s alive. She- “She didn’t die.”
The woman sighed as she closed the door that he hadn’t seen, locking it behind herself and drawing the curtain shut. “Yes, that’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.” Turning to look at him over her shoulder, she flicked the light switch to turn off the buzzing sign in her window. Ezra watched, shaken and dumbstruck as the tubes forming a hand and the words psychic readings fizzled out and went dark. “You saw her.” She slowly spun to face him fully. “But you don’t know how to find her, do you?”
Find her? He swallowed, brow furrowing and heart thudding hard. “You mean to tell me that she’s… that she is more than just a vision? That she is-”
“She is as real as you and I are.” Outside, another slosh of filthy liquid rained from the mid level as his host pulled a chair from the corner of the room closer to its twin near the window, gesturing for him to sit. He did, and she sunk into the one she’d just moved, leveling him with her stare. “But unless you do exactly as I say, the fate that you just witnessed will change and you will lose her again.” She leaned closer, the look in her eyes even more desperate. “Possibly forever.”
It didn’t make a lick of sense. Lose you? Again? He had never had you. He didn’t even know who you were.
That isn’t entirely true. I know her eyes. I…Something churned in his chest and then it felt as though he’d split open if he couldn't get his arms around you. I do know her. She… she’s my-
“Tell me one thing, soothsayer.” Something still wasn’t adding up though. He shook his head as he tried to even out his racing thoughts and slow down his breathing. “Why pray tell, does it matter to you if a point pinching aurelac swindler like me finds his soulmate?”
“First of all my name is Faye.” She answered without flinching. “And it matters to me because I believe that if you don’t follow the path that leads you to her… I will never see my daughter again. They are both alive, Ezra. My daughter and the woman who has been haunting your memory.”
“My memory?” He balked. “You mean the visions? The dreams?”
“Do they feel like dreams to you? Do you often dream without sleeping?” She reached forward, covering one of his hands on his knee with her own. “The things that you’ve seen? They are not dreams. You lived those moments, Ezra. All of those possibilities. In a hundred different worlds, in a hundred different universes. And all of them have ended the same way. But I see a path that ends in a different place - a place that leads to my little girl and to the piece of your heart that you’ve been living without - and now that you’ve seen it, too…” She squeezed his hand. “How can you look away?”
The answer was simple but he kept it to himself. He couldn’t. I won’t. But he was going to need some more clarity. “Tell me what you’ve seen, and what will be required of me before I embark on this path of yours, Faye.”
Tell me how to find her… Tell me how to find her in time and I’ll go down any path you point me towards.

Chapter One: Intruder
First - Previous - Next - Masterlist - (ao3)
The portal was a strange experience, It felt different than whe Max used it; but she had been using a miraculous longer than he ever had. The gateway opened into a spacious courtyard closed by a large wooden gate with an iron portcullis. Along the stone-brick walls were gardens filled with vegetables and herbs. A little weedy… how odd, they don't appear to require any trimming. Even the grass isn't overgrown. Despite being built centuries ago, the temple appeared to be newly built. Maybe some of the Guardians were restored with the temple. On the other wall were racks and racks of weapons of all difficulty levels. Not even rusted! At her feet, the dirt was magically stained into an intricate symbol. The Order symbol? Maybe.
Finally preceding to the main doors she had to pause, the doors were ornately carved wood inlaid with gold. The carvings depicted the story of the founding of the order. Detailing the many wars and summits necessary to protect the miraculous and the world. Taking hold of the equally intricate, brass door-rings, Marinette pulled open the doors with surprisingly little difficulty.
The doors opened to a square-shaped pathway with arch-like pillars lining the right side opening to a lawn. A pool of clear water with a blossoming cherry tree on it’s bank, despite it being fall. Does it bloom year long? In the pool was the same symbol found in the courtyard. Along the left side of the stone path were plain wooden doors with a single, unique symbol carved where there would be a peephole on more modern doors. Upon closer examination, she could read the symbols. Must be the Guardian Language. The symbols each represented a miracle box. Opening the first door, Marinette found a queen sized bed covered by luxurious bedding. Through another archway was a small area to prepare food with a cabinet containing only fifteen tiny dishes and one set of larger dishes. Passing through the final archway, she saw a miracle box set on a table with a guardian staff leaned against it.
Marinette made her way back to the pathway to look around some more. Spying a door without a marking, she decided to head that way. Through the door she beheld an oriental style dining hall with all the places set with delicate pottery. This has to seat over a hundred!  At the end of the hall was a dais that sat thirteen, the middle chair being the most elaborate. Maybe for the main guardians? Were there thirteen of them?
“Tikki, who were those chairs for?” she asked.
“I don’t know, we were never allowed out of the miracle boxes.”
Moving on through an arch at the left of the dais, she came across the kitchen. There were iron kettles and fire pits large enough to cook animals the size of a horse. By the window in the sun, several flowers and herbs hung to dry. Only half of them are dry! It’s like this place was frozen in time! Picking one of three doors leads her to another hallway lined with hundreds of doors; each one an individual living space. The rooms contained a simple bed, a washbasin, and chamberpot. The lucky ones got a window.
Going back to the kitchen and exited through the only door she hadn't gone through. There were three doors, one on the left, one on the right, and one at the end of the hall. Opting for the left door, the teen found herself in a large training room. Along the walls were five of each weapon, all dull.
The door across the hall lead to a treasury. Precious metals, gems and tapestries lined the room all painstakingly organized by size, value, and intracity. Separate from the other rooms, Marinette found what she suspected to be the “Grand Guardian’s” quarters. The rooms were even more luxurious and spacious than any others she had seen, (minus the treasury). That would be her room, judging by the marking of her miracle box on the doorway. Exhausted from the day, The new guardian fell onto the bed, not even bothering to get changed or tuck herself in, and fell sound asleep.
–––––––––––––––––Damian–––––––––––––––––
Sticking to the shadows, Damian leapt through Gotham skillfully avoiding cameras and using none of his usual equipment. Relying on his techniques that he learned in the League of Assassins, the vigilante had a distinct advantage against the members of his family. True to his training, he would disappear. Mother would be proud, no… Thalia wouldn’t, he clearly wasn’t her son anymore. At least until he was useful again.
It was simple to make his way to the run-down apartment that looked like it was abandoned. Entering through the window, Damian called off the security system and turned on the lights. He would need several things. Heading to a cabinet, the heir took out several debit cards, each in a different name with a substantial fortune he deposited personally from banks around the world. His closet was filled with clothes of all kinds. Some were for Damian while others accompanied disguises of various complexity. He filled his suitcase with the disguises.
He left the safehouse the same way he came and donned a simple and elegant disguise, Fredric Destero, a twenty-year-old businessman. Frederic promptly walked to a paid car garage to collect a car attached to Fredric’s alias. Despite sitting in a garage for four years the car had a full gas tank and charged battery. It wasn’t an expensive car, it was bought for the purpose of escape. And escape he would.
It was a short drive to the train station, filled with silence. Damian could only think of two reasons to not disappear from the modern world, and one of them would be able to find him easily and know that he didn’t want to return. The other reason was his pets. He would miss them. Maybe I could find a way to come back for them. He thought about turning back however, when he caught a glimpse of Batman starting his patrol as if nothing were out of ordinary, Damian finalized his decision to leave. A ticket to New York was cheap and the train ride would be short,(only an hour or two).
Upon arriving at the New York station Damian promptly boarded the subway that headed to the airport. JFK Airport was huge and if he hadn’t been there before, the teen would have easily been lost. However, Damian –er Friedric headed to the ticket counter to purchase a plane ride to some remote area. Opting for the soonest flight, the teen would be headed to Tibet in… twenty minutes! I probably should have given myself a larger time window.
Running through the airport is a good warm-up after sitting on a train for a few hours. He just barely made his flight. Good thing I have to be quick, almost thought I Wouldn't make it. He was sitting next to an older woman. She was talkative. Tt.
“Have you ever been to Tibet, young man?” The woman said, “ It’s my first time. For a family vacation.”
“Yes, I have visited some of the ruins and sanctuaries there.” Can I have a peaceful flight? Maybe? Turns out the answer was yes and no. She stopped talking when she fell asleep; but, she fell asleep on him. All and all, it was the most uncomfortable flight he had been on, even with his brothers.
Getting off the plane was a long and tedious process, and crowded. I am never flying again. If I can help it. Now where to go. In hindsight, he should’ve had a better plan. Instead Damian decided to hike into the mountains to live off the land? That was his half made plan until he came upon a large temple with it’s gates wide open. Against his better judgement he entered.
The place didn’t look like it was abandoned but, no one was in sight! Not a noise was made that didn’t come from some animal or nature. Until there were footsteps. The ex-assassin quietly followed the footsteps to a dining hall of some sort before he could see the person. She was elegantly dressed in what appeared to be the traditional clothes for the temple and her raven hair was tied up into a bun using red ribbons. When she turned to look in his direction, she only appeared to be sixteen years old. When the girl caught sight of him, she stood alarmed.
“Who are you and how did you get in? I thought the gates were closed.” Was that French?

The Report Card – Fantasy High Sophomore Year Ep 14
Brennan Says It’s My Turn With The Daddy Issues
So we’re in hell--literally, not emotionally (at least for the moment). We being Fig, Riz, Gilear, the Hangman, and the blood-imp valet that Fig created last week who is ostensibly named Wretchrot but also picks up the nickname Baby this episode because of shenanigans. Wretchrot brings them all to where they’ll be staying, says a bunch of wild stuff in his weird Rita Repulsa voice, and drinks Fig’s blood which is what he is made of. Riz is bullied by the Hangman and misses the other half of his Nerd Squad.
Anyway, Wretchrot takes the group on a little tour of Gorthalax’s stuff starting with the library which includes books that steal souls and also legal texts (redundant). Fig looks for a book on devil dating advice while Riz looks for something on the Hellish legal system On a 17, Fig finds a Manual for Succubi and Incubi about extracting souls via the penis. More helpfully, on a 16, Riz finds out that coups are baked into the ruling system of hell and killing someone to ascend to the throne is pretty par for the course.
Next up is the hall of treasures where there are suits of armor themed to the 7 deadly sins including kinky, gimp, Lust armor they briefly consider equipping either Gilear or Kristen with (Ally breaks at that). There are also these Venitian style masks through which the people who failed to kill Gorthalax to take his place are forced to watch him do his thing.
They pass through a hall of mirrors which they realize is a kind of security system as it shows things as they really are. Wretchrot appears in the mirror as a drop of Fig’s blood. The Hangman appears as a huge puppy!!!! (OK, a hellhound but all canines are puppies). Riz holds up the photo of Kalina to the mirror and, in the mirror, can’t see her in the photo. However, he does she her in the mirror itself. She waves at him and then appears “in person”.  Fig doesn’t know this is going on and asks Riz if he’s emotionally OK with the fact that they just whip out the photo of his dead dad on the regular. Riz says it’s fine but he quickly becomes less fine when Kalina asks if he'd like to see his dad. He starts to answer her out loud but she tells him that, by talking out loud, he’s tipped off Fig potentially so he should lose her and then meet her alone. The Hangman guards everyone while Riz and Fig split up, to find stuff to test in front of the mirror. Well, that’s the stated plan anyway.
Back in Arborly, Adaine is getting to check an item off of her Teen Girl Life Experiences checklist: Spilling Tea About Your Friend’s New GF. She gleefully does the whole, “I can’t tell you but I’ll tell you if you guess right,” routine before outright confirming that while crustacean shenanigans were happening in the house Fig and Ayda were sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G! Everyone in the group goes feral over the news, especially the Gay Squad. She vaguely recalls that Ayda also told her some information about a rune or something but everyone agrees that she retained the most important information.
They decide to call Aguefort about their coins and the rune (Kristen wisely having all the infected people leave the room). Aguefort tells them that the coins that they have comprise Kalvaxus’s hoard but not his original hoard as it has been spent and invested and put into the economy. Classic Ship of Theseus problem (ie: If you have a ship and you start replacing damaged parts of it, by the time you've replaced all the parts, is it even the same ship?). He also reminds them that spending the gold as quickly as possible is a good idea to avoid the dragon madness curse which is on all dragon gold (a weak but very hard to break curse). That prompts Adaine to describe the rune she discovered to him and he tells her basically the same stuff Ayda did last episode. She wonders if dragon madness could be the larger, static curse under which the trojan horse curse (the spellbook) is hiding. Gorgug wants to give all of the gold away and Fabian is not about that life at all.
Back in hell (literally and emotionally now) Riz prepares to meet Kalina. With a 25 Investigation, he finds a sliver of mirror that he can bring with him to keep from being tricked. He’s also mindful of being paralyzed while he’s with Kalina at the edge of a hell cliff so he anchors himself with a rope tied around his waist. Kalina is her usual aloof, darkly charming self when they speak and Riz is pretty flustered, asking if she was his dad’s familiar (no). Kalina says that Riz didn’t really know his dad and the question he isn’t asking but should be is how did his dad meet her in the first place.
She takes him to a little secret passageway which she says goes to a liminal place where he can see between the levels. She gives him the help action to get a good look (which makes Murph extremely nervous) but he only gets an 11 which means all that he sees is a cold, white light coming from the opening. He tries to use his mirror to look inside but on a 13 dex save, his footing is shaky and some rocks fall down the side of the cliff (he’s fine). Kalina says that he’s gonna have to man up and walk down the tunnel if he wants to see what’s going on. She fully reveals that she’s incorporeal and can’t actually touch him to mess with him if that helps at all.
Riz is clearly struggling with the choice but he ultimately decides that he can’t pass up this chance and that he can trust Fig to rescue him if things go south. He leaves her a note and then steps through. Within the tunnel, he can feel things watching him and hear a chittering that’s weirdly somehow coming from him. In front of him is a smoky room lit by a cone of light--think interrogation room in an old detective show. In a chair, covered in blood and shit and tattered clothes is Pok Gukgak, gagged and chained. Riz reaches for him but, as he tries to step forward, he reaches the end of his rope. Someone unseen splashes Pok with water and tells him to “confess” and “tell us what you know.” Riz pulls out his gun--his dad’s gun--to shoot out the light. As he does, a thought comes unbidden: You know what the kind thing to do with that gun would be. That shakes Riz so he lowers the gun and starts to untie himself. He’s stopped by Kalina (speaking in his mind) who tells him that if he steps in the light, he’ll be on another level of hell in the Iron City of Dis for real. Not just looking in. Riz pulls out his mirror shard and confirms that it really is his dad in there being tortured. He leaves the tunnel.
Kalina says that she knows Riz is all hopped up on doing his quest and stopping the Nightmare King but if he just stops, if they all stop, none of his friends will have to die and, bonus, maybe there will be a little rescue mission for his dad in it for him. Riz wants to know if Pok knew what her true nature was and he seems to think he cheated on his mom with her (“I know what happened between you two. I can do the math.” Which seems logistically improbable but OK). She reminds him that Pok was a spy which means it’s naive to think that every thing he did was good and taunts him about his clue hound nature before vanishing.
Riz meets up back with Gilear and Fig and he spills about everything. Gilear wants Riz to have lunch and drink some water before he does anything rash. Fig says that they don’t need Kalina to rescue Pok. They know crazy-person Bill Seacaster who’s also in hell. She lights a beacon to help him find them (if you remember, the Hangman has been attempting to contact him for Fabian). One thing I didn’t mention before is that Fig brought up the idea of temporarily installing herself as the ruler of Gorthalax's section of hell so she’d be a powerful enough devil (or devil-adjacent entity) to get them into Sylvere. Wretchrot said it was probably a no-go since she’s half mortal but, now, on a 29 Riz re-reads his legal book and realizes that Fig wouldn’t actually have to kill Gorthalax to take his place, she just needs to defeat him, which she technically has by putting him in a gem and they put that together almost before Brennan is done narrating. They have a new plan.
The other Bad Kids are discussing what Arianwyn is up to and Gorgug suggests that maybe she’s not actually working with Kalina. Maybe she’s playing along but actually has ulterior motives. Kristen looks at Arianwyn’s notes and on a 24 “Empath Roll” (Brennan converts this Ally-ism to an Insight check) sees that at a certain point, Arianwyn started making leaps in her research that were too lucky and suggest someone was helping her--possibly the entity she was researching. Adaine thinks about calling her mom using Sending or her new Sinod of Spire spell but Ayda calls Adaine and asks if she can come over. Of course she can. She comes with her recently summoned tropical fish familiar in a bubble of water--it has the very Albus Severus name of “Garthy and Adaine the Fish” which Adaine is thrilled about but also suggests shortening to GAF (and also considering reconstituting it into a cuddlier form--though the image of her dumping Boggy into GAF’s bubble is super adorable). Meanwhile, Kristen is thrilled to welcome her to “the family” because being gay is the same as visiting an Olive Garden (this is a shirt now because Ally said it which is too much power to give to Ally). Ayda kinda sucks some of the fun out of teasing her about her relationship with Fig by being extremely forthright about it but Kristen and Adaine brighten at the thought that Fig will be a lot more fun to tease.
But, back to business. Ayda has not slept because she’s been working on getting to Fig. The whole group is like, “Bitch, are you OK?” and give her an ice cream sandwich which is proper Good Friend Protocol if you have them on hand I think. Ayda is super worried about Fig and is just about ready to unmake everything standing between them (Normal lesbian move according to Kristen). They talk her down for the moment in favor of sending Fig a message: Fig you sneaky bitch. Ayda’s here. She wants to invade hell. You good? PS: OOOOOOOOOOOH. PPS: Ask Kalvaxus about dragon madness. Fig completely misses the fact that they know what’s going on with Ayda (you’d think they’d be more in sync which each others’ texting shorthand) and sends back a message saying she hopes they have fun with her but, “not too much fun,” and also that she, “is king” with no further explanation. Wild.
Ayda, who is still super keyed up to get Fig, thinks she can figure out the Planeshift spell but she needs more time to work on the spell which she could get...if they steal her dad’s time stopping pocketwatch. Considering they watched Aguefort grab the sun out of the sky the other day, they’re not super down to have a possibly adverse encounter with the man but they hear her out. While they do that, Gorgug takes his now working phone and just straight up calls the guy, explaining the situation (including Ayda’s involvement) and asking to borrow the watch. Aguefort is a little taken aback by the fact that Ayda would want any kind of contact with him at all because about 300 years back, she told him to never contact her again and that she would leave notes to her future self detailing why, which is why he hasn’t really been in her life. He lets him borrow the watch for a week (after which time it will return to him) and asks him to tell Ayda what they talked about, leaving the door open for a possible future relationship between them. When Gorgug returns with the watch and the news, Ayda breaks a little and reveals she didn’t even know she was that old. Presumably because her notes start about 150 years ago with an apology that her past self wanted a fresh start and destroyed the last several batches of notes. She hates herself for doing that and Kristen gently tries to get her to cool it with the negative self talk. Then, they hit the button on the watch and they have a week to work.
The Wizards work on Planeshift. Fabian and Kristen go to the shrine and Kristen--mirroring her vision from episode 1--sits down to draw the unknown goddess from the mural. Her Spirit Guardians emerge and start to kinda deride her for the sincerity of her action. She in turn decides that she’s done with this wishy-washy “above it all” attitude and dismisses her Spirit Guardians for good (making her, as far as I can tell, the only cleric in Solace with a 100% turnover rate on her Spirit Guardians). She finishes the picture and it feels somehow significant, to her and to Tracker too (who can look at it without wolf-raging out). Gorgug uses the time to “get smarter” which bumps his score from an 8 to a 9 (which has no mechanical implications). Ayda is also working on a side project but she’s keeping it a secret from Adaine.
In hell, the tribunal is called back in session. Fig comes in ready to claim her hell passport and the throne along with it. On a big ol’ 30 persuasion check--and because the law is on her side--Vrath is reluctantly convinced to confer upon Fig the title of arch-devil (via a full lip kiss which is some Poison Ivy bs) The new title comes with an upside pentagram mark on her forehead, full fire immunity (very convenient considering her new constantly on fire gf), and resistance to poison. However, Vraz is about to force the Hangman to stay in hell due to a legal technicality when who walks in but BILL FORKING SEACASTER, who invokes the law of the blade and immediately starts stabbing their way out of there and hustles the group to his ship (Goldenhoard’s reshaped corpse) which was indirectly named by Fig we learned after the thing that would annoy him the most--The Goldenrod.
Bill gives Fig (who is feeling iffy about her archdevil decision) a pep talk before fully signing up for the rescue mission of the dad of his son’s BFF. We also learn that Alastair Ash is interning on Bill’s ship! He’s pretty happy to see Fig and Riz but if he sees Fabian he’s fully gonna kill him. Right around now, the Bad Kids not in hell remember they can talk to the group via the Hangman and check in since the week of stopped time is up. The Hangman is like, “YOU NEED TO COME HELP US RIGHT AWAY!” They (everyone but the HangVan) Planeshift onto the deck of the Goldenrod which is being targeted by monsters and devils commanded by Vraz. Alastair makes good on his threat and starts trying to shank Fabian immediately (which Bill is hilariously blase about). Ayda opens up a portal to the sea and tries to flood Hell from the top down but Fig stops her, saying that they need to get to the second level to save Pok which seems like it will be quite a task with all the monsters Vraz is throwing at them. Luckily, Bill has money for days (and that money is somehow worth something in hell) and has a whole fleet to back them up for our big Hell Pirate Battle next episode!
Detention
Gorgug for Bad Gossip Etiquette
Look, obviously Kalina was the worst person in this episode. Like, duh. But, also, it feels like cheating to punish the Vader of the series for doing something bad. Like, yeah! That’s what she’s supposed to be doing!
So, instead, today’s dubious honor goes to Gorgug for the much less damning but more relatable sin of making his girlfriend aware of tea but not spilling it. Say it all or say nothing!
Honor Roll
Gorgug for Being More Insightful Than His 8 9 Int Would Suggest
Back to back double awards.
Wisdom is not the same as Intelligence and I actually have no idea what Gorgug’s Wisdom score is on paper but he showed a lot of in this episode.
I think he’s been the first person to suggest that whatever’s going on with Arianwyn might not be as cut and dry as it seems and then, of course, he decided to, instead of trying to Ocean’s 11 Aguefort to just slip out and have a quick heart to heart with him. One that affects him surprisingly deeply. And him bringing up his own experiences with no knowing who his birth dad was was just the chef’s kiss on top of it all.
I don’t think Brennan actually intended them to Oceans 11 Aguefort because that would be crazy, but Gorgug is the one who stepped up to solve the problem for the group with a little compassion and I think that more than earns him the spot.
Random Thoughts
Trailer for Season 5 is dropping Thursday so get hyped!
“Are you looking for the Teen Zone of the bottomless pit?”
“The fief of this dom.”
“You’re a little nerd. Tell the cool girl what you know.”
“If I had new parts, where would they go?”
I love Fabian’s confident assertion that Ayda would “love shrimp river”.
Line of the night goes to Ragh for, “Frankly, bringing up the rune in this context is homophobic.” And Adaine’s followup of, “I apologize. As an ally, I’m always learning,” was also great.
I love that the girls instantly understand Fig’s earlier hot tub comment with the new context but the boys are still clueless.
Watching Emily and Murph have their own little side adventure was so great. They are so fun together and they were clearly having a blast.
I wonder if Gorthalax can tell than Fig just got his title. Either via the title itself or his patron status.
Fig bringing up Riz’s dad to be like, “Are you OK?” caught me so off guard and it seems like it caught Riz off guard too. I hadn’t really thought about it but the fact that Fig had is just another example of her being extremely bighearted and doing a bad job of hiding it.
Emily’s impotent “rage” as all the party members loudly gossiped about her and Ayda and she couldn’t do anything about it because she wasn’t in the scene was *golden*.
Kalina leaves Riz so he can watch his dad but, if you think about it, that’s all placebo because she couldn’t do anything to him whether she’s appearing to him or not and she can watch through his eyes regardless anyway so it’s just like, “Do you want me to be visibly watching you or invisibly watching you?”
Does Kalina have, like, a range? Like, if she can literally just see out of the eyes of people that she’s infected, that limits her to a certain cone of vision and range of movement. But it seems like she can appear to a person and move independently around them to some degree, see things they can’t, point things out, and move away from them. How far away? How independent can she be? What are the logistics here?
Also, on the topic of logistics, it seems extremely hard to know someone for as long as Pok knew Kalina and not realize they’re non-corporeal. Like, even if you’re not a touchy person, eventually you’re gonna bump into them (or, in this case, not bump into them).
Man, the dice really hated Murph this week and, honestly, good. His scenes, imo, work so much better if he doesn’t get to Ally his way out of them with a Nat 20. Him being toyed with by Kalina and unsure and lost is the more interesting version of this sequence of events.
I feel like he made some big swings and misses this ep though. Like, asking if she was Pok’s familiar? Why would that have been a thing? I’m surprised he didn’t ask if he was the goddess’s familiar--though I guess they might not want to let on how much they know but bringing up the concept that she’s anyone’s familliar I think is kinda of giving the game away.
“I have a hard time making conversation with my friends, let alone you” Riiiiiiiiiiz.
Kalina brought up Kristen to Riz specifically, which I find interesting. (She also said that Kristen used to worship Sol which isn’t strictly true, she worshiped Helio, but same family and that was likely just a slip of the tongue from Brennan. Just wanted to point it out).
Who does Kalina even work for? Like, it seems like she’s working with the Nightmare King but if she’s the mystery goddess’s familiar like we all think then that’s weird because it doesn’t seem like the NK and mystery goddess are together. Like, a part of me is just dumping everyone antagonistic to the Bad Kids into the same “Bad” bucket in my head but there’s no way all of these people have totally aligned goals.
“Dragon madness 69”
It’s brought up again in this episode that some of Arianwyn’s research was requisitioned by Pok earlier which I want to ascribe significance to but I’m not in a theorizing headspace right now so I’ll just point it out for anyone who does want to play Gukgak.
I’ve been kinda wondering about the logistics of Aguefort and Ayda and how old that dude is but I totally forgot Chronoancy was a factor which I guess indirectly answers any and all questions about that. It also adds some dimension to his character that time travel is a thing that kinda makes you feel unmoored from time, which I think goes some way (though not all of the way) in explaining why he’s so feral. And, speaking of Aguefort insanity, he was also at the party Zelda was at last episode in the form of an owl as the beer pong mascot. Which Gorgug has Thoughts about.
I really really want Adaine to talk to her mom in the Synod of Spires. Have you guys realized that, for as much of a driving force Arianwyn’s been this season, she’s had almost no dialogue? She has talked I think 3 times total in all of FH: During Adaine’s intro, Apologizing to her when Aelwen was arrested, and the Message Adaine found from her last episode. That’s it. We know almost nothing about her. What is her deal? Also, Siobhan just always kills during all of her one-on-one scenes and I’m biased.
Love the return of the Bad Kids being unable to make a phone call and stealing the phone from each other to tag in with their own nonsense.
Wild that Gorgug was able to get through to Aguefort since he has a history of pissing that dude off by saying the wrong (well, “wrong”) thing.
Shoutout to Gilear for being the Designated Dad of the Hell Trip and making sure the kids were eating and stuff. That was a very endearing moment.
Also, while we’re on the topic of Gilear, he also cleared up that Sandra-Lynn never seriously propositioned him in an irresponsible, “Let me give you a Magic STD” kinda way which was something I’d been thinking about so I’m glad he said something (though the kids kinda aren’t even though I think we’re way past the point of TMI here).
“Hiss at her litigator.”
Riz, who Fig is Looking to be the Voice of Reason re: Her Arch-Devil Upgrade: This is super rad.
I’m very curious about whether Brennan fully planned for Fig to decide to take Gorthalax’s place because, on the one hand, my brain didn’t go there at all but, on the other, getting Emily Axford to install someone--possibly herself--into a position of power is like getting Siobhan Thompson to steal a book I feel.
Fig Upon Being Told That Ayda Told Everyone About Them: Fuck.
I feel like Kristen is gonna wish she had her big moment of emotional catharsis AFTER this big hell pirate fight and not before when she can’t summon her Spirit Guardians.
Man, we haven’t gotten a big, enthusiastic, “Papa!” from Fabian in a while have we?
No crits in either direction this episode which is wild considering Fig got a THIRTY at one point.

15 Underrated Game Boy Advance Games
https://ift.tt/3vFzwrI
When the Game Boy Advance hit shelves in Japan on March 21, 2001, Nintendo was still riding the incredible success of the original Game Boy. After more than a decade of the Game Boy’s handheld dominance, though, gamers eagerly awaited the next evolution in portable gaming. The GBA delivered that evolution.
In fact, many features we now take for granted in portables like the Switch can be traced back to the GBA. The addition of shoulder buttons, full 32-bit color graphics, and eventually even built-in backlighting with the 2003 release of the Game Boy Advance SP were all lauded as welcome innovations and improvements. Sadly, the GBA’s time in the sun was remarkably short. Pressured by the upcoming release of the Sony PSP, Nintendo released the GBA’s successor, the Nintendo DS, less than four years after the launch of the GBA.
Yet, GBA games continued to be released all the way into 2008. The GBA is still fondly remembered for its excellent ports of games like Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and for helping launch new franchises like Mega Man Zero and Golden Sun, but its library was much more than just those major titles. Dig a little deeper into it and you’ll find that the GBA was also home to some truly excellent hidden gems that are still worth checking out 20 years later.
15. Urban Yeti!
2002 | Cave Barn Studios
Keep in mind that in the early 2000s, developing games for the GBA was much cheaper than making a console game. Steam wasn’t a thing yet, and cell phones could barely run Snake. So, if you were an ambitious young developer with a goofy idea and a dream, your best bet for making it happen was to put it on Nintendo’s handheld.
Urban Yeti! is the type of weird, charming experience that typically only finds a cult audience on PCs nowadays. You play from a top-down perspective as the titular Yeti who is looking for his mate in a small city. Most of the time, the game plays like the first two Grand Theft Auto games with even more chances to punch random pedestrians. More importantly, finding a boombox starts a dancing freak out that clears the screen of enemies, and “missions” take the form of minigames inspired by titles like Toobin’ and Root Beer Tapper.
It’s weird and short, but always hilarious, and it’s unfortunately become increasingly obscure since its release.
14. Lady Sia
2001 | RFX Interactive
Most of the platformers on the GBA were either fantastic SNES ports or dreadful licensed fare, but a few original titles do stand out. The first thing you’ll probably notice about Lady Sia is that it looks great. Its big, bright graphics were a perfect fit for the GBA’s small screen. The gameplay is also surprisingly deep and utilizes combos, magic attacks, and even the ability to shape shift into a sasquatch during boss fights. Yes, this is the second game on the list to feature a playable Bigfoot, but we promise it’s the last.
Lady Sia was fairly well received at the time of its release, and a sequel was even planned in 2003. Sadly, it was canceled due to a lack of funding.
13. V-Rally 3
2002 | Velez & Dubail
The GBA was released at a time when the vast majority of console games were going full 3D. The GBA, however, was obviously built with 2D pixel games in mind. Those perceived limitations didn’t stop some developers from pushing the limits of what the handheld was capable of, though, as evidenced by the V-Rally 3 team managing to cram fully polygonal cars into the GBA.
Graphically, V-Rally 3 is undoubtedly the best-looking game on the system. Its surprisingly detailed outdoor tracks could easily be mistaken for an N64 game. You can even play the entire career mode in first-person. Thanks to some surprisingly smooth handling, though, V-Rally 3 proves to be much more than just great visuals. It may not look like much compared to modern racers, but it’s still the undisputed pinnacle of racing on the GBA.
12. Car Battler Joe
2002 | Ancient
Car Battler Joe is a decent RPG mixed with awesome car battling sections that elevate it above most of the GBA’s library. The story isn’t great (your father is missing and you have to find him), but the hook is that in this world, cars are a rarity. As such, you have to build your own Mad Max-style vehicle from spare parts found around the world and eventually battle other vehicles as you work to finish your quest.
That concept alone is begging for a sequel or spiritual successor. Sadly, most people have long forgotten about Joe, and even its re-release on the Wii U eShop in 2015 didn’t garner much attention.
11. Kuru Kuru Kururin
2001 | Eighting
Kuru Kuru Kururin is one of those puzzle games that sounds so simple in theory but ends up being surprisingly complex and a lot of fun. You play as a rotating stick (or “helicopter” in the North American version) that must make it to the goal at the end of a series of mazes. You control how quickly the stick rotates, and you’ll need to master that mechanic as the difficulty ramps up significantly in the later levels. This game remains a remarkably addictive experience until the end.
Though Kuru Kuru Kururin‘s core concept boasts nearly universal appeal, the game was only released on the GBA in Japan and Europe. A localized version finally made its way to North America in 2016 through the Wii U eShop, but Nintendo of America seems oddly stubborn about acknowledging the series. Neither of its two sequels ever made it out of Japan.
10. Sabre Wulf
2004 | Rare
Most gamers say that Rare peaked during the N64 era with a string of successful platformers and shooters, but old-school Rare still managed to squeeze out a handful of classic games for the GBA after the company was sold to Microsoft in 2002. Everything gamers love about classic Rare games is on full display in Sabre Wulf: the cutting-edge graphics, tight controls, and the trademark offbeat British sense of humor.
Unfortunately, Sabre Wulf didn’t find much of an audience. Prior to the release of this title, the Sabreman character hadn’t starred in a game in almost 20 years. The updated gameplay apparently didn’t appeal to older fans, and wasn’t innovative enough to attract younger gamers. It’s aged better than many other GBA games, though, and it’s certainly well worth a playthrough now.
9. Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars
2002 | Konami
While it was never as successful as Hideo Kojima’s other games, the Zone of the Enders series is still fondly remembered for some of the better action games of the PS2 era. Their unique mecha combat and Kojima’s flair for cinematic storytelling helped those games stand out from a competitive pack.
Unlike its console brethren, The Fist of Mars is a turn-based strategy game. That means it’s not nearly as fast-paced as the other Zone of the Enders games, but there is an aiming reticle for targeting enemies, so this is more action-oriented than the typical strategy game.
While Kojima wasn’t directly involved in the development of The Fist of Mars, the writing is surprisingly strong, hitting all the right dramatic and philosophical notes that mecha fans have come to expect from the genre.
8. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2003 | Griptonite Games
EA released a couple of solid beat ‘em ups for consoles to coincide with the release of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the GBA versions are actually even better than those largely beloved adaptations. Like The Two Towers tie-in released a year prior, The Return of the King is basically Diablo in Middle Earth.
There are a whopping eight different playable characters pulled from the movie. Despite the technical constraints of the GBA, each of those characters plays completely differently. Aragorn is the classic warrior, Legolas is the able-bodied archer, and Gandalf uses magic to fell waves of orcs. They’re even all completely customizable with their own weapons and equipment.

Castlevania: Why the Game Boy Advance Games Are Worth Revisiting
By Chris Freiberg
The GBA version of Return of the King still stands out as one of the best Lord of the Rings games ever made, and future games inspired by Tolkien’s books would do well take a few cues from it.
7. Summon Night: Swordcraft Story
2006 | Flight-Plan
Thanks to lower development costs, the GBA featured many experiments that led to unusual combinations of genres. For instance, whereas many dungeon crawlers are typically slow, plodding affairs, Summon Night: Swordcraft Story sped things up through fast-paced, real-time battles inspired by the Tales of series. Battles in Swordcraft Story story are an absolute joy since you’re doing more than just scrolling through menus.
The sequel, released just a few months later on the GBA, is also worth checking out. Sadly, while the Summon Night main series is still chugging along, the Swordcraft Story subseries looks to be abandoned at this point.
6. Klonoa: Empire of Dreams
2001 | Namco
For a brief period in the early 2000s, the Klonoa series felt like it was on the verge of becoming a household name. All of the games were praised for their tight, diverse platforming, and the series’ word of mouth was generally strong, but the games just never seemed to reach a large audience.
Empire of Dreams is a side-story set between the events of the two console Klonoa games. It features the same use of the “wind bullet” to capture enemies and the same creative level design as its console big brothers. While it can’t pull off the 3D effects featured in those games, impressive multiplane backgrounds and advanced rotation effects do help it stand out among the GBA’s crowded library of platformers.
5. Rebelstar: Tactical Command
2005 | Codo Technologies
Don’t be fooled by the Rebelstar name: this is actually an X-Com game through and through. While there’s no base building or resource management in this GBA title, that classic tactical combat against an alien threat that defines the X-Com series can be found here in all its glory. Then again, what else would you expect? Rebelstar was created by the same guy behind X-Com, Julian Gollop.
Of course, this being a GBA game, Rebelstar’s visuals aren’t quite up to par with an X-Com title. In fact, some may find its more cartoony style jarring when paired with this style of gameplay, but Rebelstar certainly makes for a unique experience compared to the other tactics games out there.
4. Yggdra Union
2006 | Sting Entertainment
The final days of any gaming platform are a dark time typically defined by sporadic releases and shovelware. Yet, every now and then, a bright spot appears for those gamers who haven’t yet moved on to the next generation. As a deep mix of tactical RPG mechanics and card battles bolstered by some of the best 2D graphics on the portable, Yggdra Union is one of the better games released in the GBA’s post-DS era.
While the game’s story isn’t great, the regular banter between party members is charming, and there is a lot of content to keep you busy if the gameplay manages to hook you. A Switch port was even released in Japan last year, so keep your fingers crossed that it makes its way stateside.
3. Drill Dozer
2006 | Game Freak
Game Freak will always be known for the massively successful Pokemon franchise, but the developer has occasionally dabbled in other genres. The best of those experiments has to be Drill Dozer: a game about drilling. Need to go forward? Try drilling. Backward? Also drilling. What about jumping? Yeah, that actually involves drilling, too. It sounds repetitive, but there are so many different ways use to Jill’s Drill Dozer that the mechanic actually never wears out its welcome.
It might be tempting to check out Drill Dozer via emulation, but it’s actually worth tracking down the original cartridge for this one since it’s one of only two GBA games to feature a rumble back in the cart. It adds quite a lot to the experience.
2. Astro Boy: Omega Factor
2004 | Treasure
A handheld game based on an anime that hasn’t been popular in the United States since the ‘60s sounds like a recipe for disaster, but legendary Japanese developer Treasure could do no wrong in the ‘90s and early 2000s. Like most of the games in the Treasure catalog, Astro Boy: Omega Factor features fast arcade gameplay, massive screen-filling special attacks, and some of the most beautiful sprites the GBA could produce.
Though Treasure was once a prolific developer, responsible for classics like Ikaruga and Sin & Punishment, the company has gone quiet in recent years. The studio hasn’t even released a game stateside in the last decade. However, a re-release of this gem could mark a great comeback for the legendary developer if the licensing could be worked out.
1. Ninja Five-O
2003 | Hudson Soft
Ninja Five-O should have been a system seller for the GBA. The game feels like a lost classic from the 16-bit era. It’s a beautiful combination of Ninja Gaiden and Bionic Commando bolstered by tight controls and an over-the-top story about a magic-wielding ninja who is also a cop. Anyone who has managed to track down a copy swears up and down that it’s one of the very best experiences on the handheld.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Yet, Ninja Five-O was set up to fail from the start. It’s unknown how many copies were made, but it was nearly impossible to find one at the time of its release. Even though the game was developed in Japan, it was never even released there. Media outlets also barely covered it. Yet, the legend of Joe Osugi has only grown over the years, with complete copies of this game regularly selling on eBay for around $1,000. Even an authentic standalone cartridge will set you back several hundred dollars. You know what, though? It’s actually one of the few rare games that may be worth the price. It really is as good as you’ve heard.

COVID and the Terror of Uncertainty There are two worlds, in a way never before imagined, one of people and jobs, of life and experience, the other a shadowy world of deceit and terrorism. As the month of March 2020 comes to an end and April begins, the entire planet is being tested. As expected, as promised as any idiot might guess, political leadership has failed and the organizations intended to coordinate the planetary response to biological threats has shown itself to be politicized, weakened or possibly worse. On March 30, 2020, the Berman Law Group of Boca Raton, Florida, filed a $20 trillion lawsuit against the government of China for creating and disseminating the COVID 19 virus which has, well, we don’t really know. One has to remind one’s self of our times. A few years ago, what was termed an “Arab Spring” emerged, largely manipulated by militarized subsidiaries of Google and Facebook, funded by totalitarian regimes aligned with the US. “Spring,” as it turned out means something different to the people of the Middle East. The social reformers of the West delivered head choppers and Islamists, stolen oil and looted factories and not so much democracy as promised. Then, as so easily predicted, those who brought the disease thus offered the cure, “coalition” bombings, occupation, drone assassination and unending suffering. In Ukraine, “spring” meant false flag snipers and downing an airliner followed by a descent into politics more familiar to those who studied the last century and the fascist attempt to rule the world. Nothing is as it seems, nothing seen can be believed, nothing read is true, nothing taught exists, all is flimflammery and bluster, buffoonery and mayhem. Well, what does one see? Living in the United States, one sees a lockdown of a nation for one, two, three or more months. What one doesn’t see is where, exactly 200 million people are, how they live, where the money comes from to feed them and what the sinking feeling of hopelessness is doing to them. For the “haves,” well financed retirees or medical workers not yet infected, life may be changed, even grim but it will continue. Quite recently, a number of publications began spreading the rumor that 21 million Chinese mobile phone users had simply disappeared, meaning that they had died of COVID 19 and were now in mass graves. This type of story is common and such things spring up almost daily. The reason isn’t simple, a sea of absurd lies is manufactured by “think tanks” in order to drown those gems of embarrassing truth that escaped the Google censors or the control of the corporate media. Here in the US, the concern is generated by driving past miles of closed factories, stores and restaurants. The government plans to send out small checks to cover up to 5% of economic losses of the working poor who were always no more than 3 weeks from homelessness. Now they can’t be thrown out on the street, not for awhile anyway, law has prevented this but the lost income will never be replaced, income that paid insurance, health care for children, bought food and clothing and that American lifestyle of fast food, cable television and continual texting. Those jobs, the restaurants and shops, many of the factories, no longer exist. No bail out can save them in a permanently retracted economy that will never be able to reabsorb millions of workers whose livelihood was governed by economic fakery. Where two weeks before stores were emptied, now the money that financed buying carloads of toilet paper has dwindled away. No one talks of this. No one reports this. No one asks where 200 million Americans are, how they feed their kids, how they spend their days, and how fear is playing on their vulnerability. There is no social welfare state in America. The benefits for retirees, Medicare and Social Security, are being chipped away by “conservative” politics. Health care for veterans, and there are many millions of former military whose lives were destroyed while America destroyed the Middle East, has disappeared, unspoken of and unreported. Veterans are being told they are being removed from health care and can no longer be treated, including and especially the totally disabled combat veterans. Supplies don’t exist, the pharmacies are out of medications and it didn’t start with COVID 19, it began with Donald Trump. Veterans’ health care, the largest health care system in the world, disappeared when no one was looking. It is dead and gone. It will never be reported, no organization will complain to congress because, you see, if you aren’t a bank or oil company, one of those with their hands out for $6 trillion in free money from the Trump regime, you don’t exist. A few paragraphs ago we mentioned the massive lawsuit against China. The assumption that China created COVID 19 is based on an important research paper written in 2015 that tied a research facility in Wuhan to a study on a bat virus that created something capable of infecting the world, a disease exactly like COVID 19. This is the origin of the “blame China” ploy, just like the blame Russia for fake gas attacks in Syria or when the Kiev regime shot down MH17. All that was needed was a fake court, fake evidence and controlled media. With the accusation against China, all that is needed is for China to be tied, in this case for supplying a virus, to a dangerous terror group, to a global pandemic. The terror group, as we discovered was the USAID, a CIA affiliate that used the Wuhan virus to create something frightening at the University of North Carolina, not in Wuhan. A lawsuit and trial will condemn China in a rigged American court. Experts, so many experts, who saw China defeat the disease in weeks while it has run rampant across the US, have come to believe that the US was always the origin and that COVID 19 had been around for some time inside the US before showing up in China. What is strange is that some questions are never asked. Why so many die in Northern Italy? The best hospitals in the world are there, no transportation hubs, no ties to “Wuhan” and no bio-warfare labs? Are they being experimented on? Then we have Detroit, another anomaly. A city of all private homes, a city filled with poor, a disease spread rapidly through a community that uses no public transportation and that has been housebound by weather for months. No one looks for a “patient zero” or “super-spreader,” a term used in studies on bio-terrorism. The other untold story is the restructuring of America’s employment environment, no trade unions anymore, no contracts, no benefits, no guarantees, the war on the worker that Reagan began and Bush (43) won behind the smokescreen of 9/11 and the fake War on Terror. You see, injured workers seldom qualify for benefits and those laid off because of economic slowdowns are denied benefits though processes of fake accusations and legal trickery. It gets worse, if you are injured on a job, let’s say a piece of heavy equipment breaks and you are seriously injured. Not only will you likely never receive wage compensation, but you are likely to be denied needed medical care as well. Medical treatment is often withheld, other than enough to make sure you don’t die right away, until a “hearings process” is exhausted, which can take up to two years. During that time, a physical injury will often lead to permanent crippling and care, when it becomes available eventually, is palliative only, often opiate pain relievers. This is what is meant when it is said that the social welfare “SafetyNet” in the US has disappeared. This is where 200 million Americans without hope now live, to fend for themselves and watch television, being told day and night to hate China and wait for a check with Donald Trump’s signature that might buy tires for a car that was repossessed.

A dream game of mine
These are the ideas I often come up with for a dream game, and it just combines so many elements from different things I've played or watched videos of into one huge and crazy thing that would be amazing to see and play. It's pretty much a pipe dream in this lifetime of mine but I can't help but imagine it. So without anymore stalling, here's all my ramblings about it.
I would just really love a game like Skyrim is, but just... more. Like Skyrim has a bunch of the adventure/exploration elements I love in a game, but I didn't think it had enough diversity in scenery and it all felt cold because of the part of the world it was set in.
I would love a game that was like Elder Scrolls Online in size with all the different provinces you can go to with all that land to explore between the snowy areas, desert areas, and forest/jungle areas and all the settlements that would be scattered throughout. And all the scenery in that game was beautiful to me. And along with that, add the crafting/blacksmithing stuff from ESO too, because that was the main thing I did when I played the game. I created everything I used from different swords and armor.
And speaking of swords and armor, I'd love the game to have what ESO does, which was have there be different styles of weapons and armor you can craft after you read the plans or whatever for it. Like a steel sword can be one style, or you can craft it in another style but it would have the same stats, just a different look. Same with armor too. Or a greatsword could be more on the skinny side, or you could make it be a massive weapon like what the Buster Sword is.
Whatever weapons you favorite will be visible on your character and you can choose where you want something specifically placed. For example, a Ranger could have their bow across their chest and back and their quiver of arrows at their back either behind either shoulder or at their waist, or on their thigh while they have a dagger on one hip and a sword on the other. You can't have too many weapons on your body though. There would be a weapon wheel you can bring up that lets you choose between what weapons you have favorited.
The weapons and armor would be highly customizable too. Like with armor, you could mix and match different pieces or furs to make something unique to you, and for weapons you could add different accessories to them like jeweled hilts or carved bow shafts.
As for the exploration, I think it would be a phenomenal thing to focus on in a fantasy game. With so many environments like what I mentioned above with forests to snowy areas, there can be some absolute magic to be discovered like beautiful lakes or ponds, or something like my Heaven's Clearing area I created in my RWBY AU. Mountainous areas with waterfalls cascading down the rocks? Giant trees in a gorgeously lush forest with a treehouse village? A snowy village deep within the mountains? An ancient and run down fortress in a canyon with only one small valley to access it? Sprawling cave systems in the mountains? Tropical beaches? A beautiful oasis hidden in the middle of a vast desert? Explore and you can find stuff like this and more.
Examples of the sights you could see. I don't know the artists sadly. I found these all on Reddit at r/imaginarylandscapes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if and when you find this stuff? Build there if you want! It could be like Fallout 76 with the C.A.M.P. thing, but you have such an extreme amount of freedom to build kind of like in Minecraft, and have the building be like a mix between Minecraft, 7 Days to Die, and Ark. Build what you want from a nice, cozy little cabin in the woods, or a big estate on the mountainside with the waterfalls going under the house. Make it as big and as grand, or as small and as cozy as you want it to be with loads of decoration stuff you can build, and with different variations to the decorations. Different styles of beds, candles, wardrobes, chests, doors, windows, whatever. Just give unmatched variety. And of course for all of them, you would have to go out and find the materials, like for a simple cabin you would have to go out and either buy the lumber, or cut it down yourself. Or if you want to just dig into the side of a hill or mountain and mold your home from there, you absolutely can, given you have the equipment to dig it all out. Or you could just be a nomad and camp around anywhere you wanted while you travel and not be held down to one place.
Character customization would let you be able to make the character you want for a fantasy game like this is in my imagination. Loads of different hairstyles, body types, eye/hair/skin colors, customize your height to be the size of a Goliath (in D&D) or a gnome and so on. Pick from a variety of races from human, different races of elves, dwarves, halflings gnomes, goliaths, orcs and tabaxis', mix races, and more. And in game, you can really pick any type of clothing/armor style you want from even more choices. And along with that, you can of course pick different classes for your character to be from a fighter/warrior, to a ranger, to a magic user, to a bard, or whatever. You pick your skills from a huge list of stuff for each class and you go around and do what you want to do as that character. And like with Dragon's Dogma (one of my favorite games), you can change your class instead of being tied into one class at really any point in the game that you felt like. And you can multiclass too and combine any two classes you want to try.
Magic in the game would be more... magical. Like you start out with basic spells if you're one of the magic using classes with sorcerers getting a bit more, but it all starts out as just looking very dull. And when you train and level up your magical abilities and find new spells out of the huge selection of them in the game, the magic gets more and more bright, vivid, colorful, vibrant, and flashy too so you can actually see the results of all the levels you poured into your magic.
It wouldn't just be exploration though, considering weapons, armor, and magic would be in the game. There would be so many different jobs and ways to make gold to choose from, and there would be multiple long running quests you could accept that would be like something from D&D. And a thing for that is that the game can either be single player and you can pick a party of NPCs to join you through your adventures, or you could switch it over to multiplayer and invite a few of your friends in to explore the world together or do these quests and split the rewards from both the journey itself and the reward for completing the quests. The questscan have different styles, like serious ones and some where there can be some fun, like a Borderlands mission.
And as something in between these quests, you could have different jobs you can choose from like I mentioned. You can start your own mine or lumber yard to sell ores, precious gems, or wood to anyone (NPC or player) that wants/needs it. You can do guard duty for someone, you could scout an area out for any dangers for someone wanting to build a house or for military, or chart out unknown parts of the world and draw a map of it (provided you take a cartography skill) and sell them to people. You could even just be a simple hunter and hunt game to provide meat and pelts for yourself and for trade. Or be a bard and make some music between more somber songs or uplifting ones, or ones where you just tell the tales of events that have happened in the game. And for that, the game would have a huge score of music. And there would be bounty hunting quests as well, and sometimes they can lead into something more.
You have the choice between if you want to be a combat focused character or a trader/craftsman focused character or something along those lines. In single player, you could hire an NPC bodyguard and they would be extremely competent (unlike the referees in WWE games :p) in battles in order to protect you. Or in multiplayer, your friends could provide your protection while you create trade routes or gather materials, or explore the world for treasures. And it could be the other way around with you being the bodyguard and your friend being the one you're protecting too.
Choose your own backstory from a huge list of options. You could have a backstory as a simple farmer, a guard, a soldier, a trader, a blacksmith, a mercenary, or a craftsman to name a few. Each backstory comes with a specific set of gear depending on the backstory and an area of the world you start out with and in. Like a mercenary would start with light armor and a battle axe, having just completed a job in the colder regions so you would have fur cloaks and armor or you could have just completed a job in a more tropical spot of the world.
And romance too! You could have your character romance any NPC in the game no matter if they're male or female, unless they're already married. Or if you want to do a bit more, romance them both! Start a family with them, and hire bodyguards to protect them while you're out adventuring, if your spouse doesn't have any combat skills of course. Or hire bodyguards anyway to secure your childrens' safety.
See a dog you want to adopt? Adopt it! Same with cats or any other animal you might see up for adoption or for sale from somewhere. Each province have different kinds of pets you can get, so traveling the world for your perfect hunting/travel buddy or housemate may be something to do. And you can name your pet too. Or you could even capture and tame a wolf or tiger or something in the wild too if you wanted. Also, you can pet your pets. Give them attention!
For travel, you could either carry the bare essentials on your character and just walk either alone or with a companion by your side, or you could save your gold for a horse or go tame a wild one to ride through the world. And on top of that, you can buy different types of wagons to carry all the things you need to set up a larger camp for yourself or for your companions. Larger wagons mean the need for an extra horse. And you can also buy or craft accessories for your horse and wagons, like different saddles or canopies respectively.
And also for travel across the seas, you can either pay for passage on a ship or save up gold to buy your own and hire your own crew to go on voyages. Along with that, one thing you could do is become a pirate if you chose to in case you didn't want to just spend your days on land, or become a trade vessel to transport goods from place to place, or you could even just have it become a passenger ship and take gold to take people across the sea. Search for buried treasure and pillage other ships as a pirate, or discover an island to claim for yourself and your friends.
One thing that would be in the game would be hunting, from small game all the way up to dragons. The hunting is something I enjoy so much in Red Dead Online that I would love to see it in a game like this with so many animals and creatures. Of course there would be stuff like boars, deer, bears, and animals like that but there would also be fantasy creatures to try to hunt, and the biggest, baddest, most difficult, and most rewarding would be dragons if you chose to hunt them. But you could just stick to hunting normal animals too, because that can be very rewarding in its own way like with what I said before about hunting. And of course, you could go fishing at one of the many rivers, streams, ponds, or lakes in the game too.
There would be two separate modes you could do between a more casual experience or something more hardcore. The casual mode would be that you don't have to worry about eating, drinking, sleeping, or worrying about temperature to survive while the survival mode would include all those things, plus the need to watch out for poisons, venom, or diseases or anything like that so players can enjoy the game how they want to enjoy it.
One thing about the game is that there is single player and multiplayer of course, but the multiplayer would have private servers and public ones for if you only wanted to play with friends, or if you wanted to take it online and interact with a bunch of other players. And on top of that, there would be separate servers for players who only want to have a peaceful time with other players where they can't attack each other at all, and servers where PvP is fully on for the players that want the danger of dealing with other players that want to take them out so there aren't those types of people in the same servers. Choose your server, choose your experience.
Another thing that would be a part of the game is full, unrestricted mod support. Create mods for the game to craft it into something truly special either with different weapons, armors, spells, quests, races, or anything. Download any mod you want at your discretion, no matter what it is. And the mod support would span all platforms the game is on with absolutely no restrictions regardless of platform or the content of the mods.
To make the game even more special, you can create a new character at any time you want, and your previous character will still be wondering the world while you're starting anew. And if you end up finding your other character, you can form a team with them and easily switch back and forth between the two. That would make it possible to create your own adventuring party rather than hire NPCs or relying on your friends. Or, you can just have your characters be completely separate. And if you wanted to, you could possibly romance your own characters if you can't find the right NPC in the huge world.
The hud would be something very simple, with a health and energy/mana meter, a mini map, and radar. Each thing here can be toggled on or off so you could just have your health and energy/mana showing while turning off the radar and map, or you could have it all be turned off to have nothing on your screen for a more immersive experience. You can switch between third and first person to increase that even more.
Basically what I want is some huge fantasy exploration/adventure/action/RPG, something so huge with so many things to do that it has such an immense amount of playability and replayability. Something set in an hugely detailed and gorgeous world with multiple large provinces/climates/biomes. It would take an insane amount of time to try to explore every little part of the world, along with completing all the quests. And there would never really be a shortage of quests because they would keep being added every once in a while to the game through free updates, along with the ones added through mods.
That's all I have to share about this huge, crazy, borderline impossible dream game of mine right now. I might add more to it if/when I think of more. I hope you all enjoyed the read if you decided to read it. I'd love to hear what you guys think, and I'd love to hear your own ideas if you have them.
