Chapter 4: "You like Pac-man, right?"
"How dare you!"
You’ve just finished entering the final character to G0d$l@yeR_69 when you look up from the post-game leaderboard screen.
"Pardon?" you ask in confusion, slightly alarmed by the speed in which a masked man is walking towards you and the Pac-man machine. Even with the mask, the exaggerated furrow marring the man’s forehead is more than enough for you to discern that he is less than pleased. You square your shoulders, in case you need to defend the precious apparatus. Well, that and protect Lee-ssi, but mostly the Pac-man game.
"You're G0d$l@yeR_69?" the man squawks, voice irate. He gives you a once over and bristles further. You can almost imagine his fluffy hair rising like the feathers of an offended bird, and he… kind of sounds like one, too. You struggle to stifle your snicker when he gestures broadly to your grown stature, incredulous even as he finally discerns to himself, “You’re not some pint-sized punk!”
“And yet here you are, humbled all the same.” you respond haughtily, dusting off the imaginary lint off your burgundy dress. “Based on your reaction, I take it you’re ‘Jin the PacMan God’?”
You pause.
Wait.
Jin?
In fact, this offended cockatoo of a man actually looks… familiar. Broad shoulders, nice eyebrows, and –
Your blood pressure skyrockets as you realize exactly who is yelling at you. Unfortunately, your temper rises faster than your self-preservation.
"I'm sorry, BTS Jin is the same stupid kid who calls himself 'Jin the PacMan God?'" you blurt before you can stop yourself. "What self-respecting adult wastes so much time on an arcade game?"
He raises an eyebrow at you with a pointed stare, and you shrug. You don't fit into that category. You certainly don't respect yourself.
"A grown woman calls herself G0d$l@yeR_69?" Kim Seokjin jabs in return, crossing his arms, now looking more sulky than angry.
"Well, it's accurate to lore," you retort with an uncaring flip of your hair, doing your best to look bored rather than reflect the panic beginning to clog your throat. His genuinely offended gasp would have made you laugh if you weren't currently running through the possible exit routes in your head.
And then Jin says, "Well, you must be cheating!"
The egregious accusation dispels all thoughts of escape from your head. Your pride and integrity as a gamer have been insulted, and you narrow your eyes at the self-proclaimed pro-gamer before you.
You’re fully prepared to defend your honor.
It's on.
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
Jimin doesn't get it.
How could he be unlucky enough to get sidelined a second time in a row? He wasn't even late this time! But because there had been more men than women (a bit heteronormative for his tastes, but that's the current state of most official speed-dating events), he and a few others had to wait aside for a rotation. And then somehow, everyone had already decided to pair up before he even got to meet anyone!
Perhaps it's karma and he's being punished for telling his Jin-hyung that he sort of kind of definitely looked like a certain pink Moluccan bird species when he was all riled up and red-eared.
With a sigh, he leaves the building, shoulders slumped. He can't quite bring himself to call Jin yet, and so he decides to walk aimlessly for a while. Perhaps some fresh air will cheer him up.
It's a bustling street, and he nervously brings his mask up higher on his face lest he be recognized. No one seems to be paying attention however, and the people going about their daily lives remind him that despite his woes, life goes on.
An arcade catches his eye, and he shrugs to himself. A few rounds of killing zombies or racing fake cars will take his mind off things. It's a school day, so it's unlikely the place will be packed.
When he walks in, he hears a familiar screech, accompanied by the sound of a boot stomping on the ground.
"Yahhh! How did you do that?! That's not fair!"
What is Jin-hyung doing here? And what is he yelling about?
Curious, he follows the voice past the shopkeeper who looks torn between concern and amusement, to where Jin is ranting at someone obscured by his frame.
A p(r)etty sigh.
"I'm sorry this is so difficult for you to get through that coconut haircut of yours, but has it occurred to you that I'm just better?"
Huh, that voice is also familiar.
"That’s just prepos–"
"...Hyung?"
The voices cease as the two arguers turn to look at Jimin, and he feels his breath catch in his throat.
You look particularly lovely today, with a form-fitting burgundy dress that shows off much more soft-looking skin than the business or lounge attire you wear on the rare occasion he actually sees you.
And his Jin-hyung, next to you, all rose-colored cockatoo.
It's more than enough to set Jimin off-balance.
"Oh! Hi, LN-ssi!" he hurriedly squeaks, cursing his voice for cracking. What are all his voice lessons even for?
At least you can't tell his palms are suddenly sweating. Your eyebrows rise and Jimin realizes you never did tell him your name, that he just saw it on your mailbox and it stuck in his brain. Oh no, do you think he's a stalker now?
"You know this phony?" Jin cries, oblivious to the internal crisis his dongsaeng is currently experiencing.
Jimin's brows crinkle. Phony?
Your head whips to his hyung at his words, your eyes narrowing.
"I believe you saw proof with your own two eyes," you say icily, though your gaze has a fire that makes Jimin gulp. "Maybe you should get them checked? Sometimes they can fail with old age."
Jin's jaw drops, and as a constipated sound of outrage leaves him, you take the opportunity to brush past and march to the exit. Jimin, still confused, steps aside automatically to let you pass and you give him a reluctant nod.
"Jimin-ssi."
As you leave, Jin turns to Jimin to demand answers, but he barely hears it over the fluttering in his tummy.
It's the first time you've ever addressed him by name.
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
The twelve-year-old boy opens his hand, revealing hard candy wrapped in shiny, yellow paper.
"You like Pac-man, right?" he asks, smiling brighter than the sun.
You accept his offering, sure your own face is radiant enough to power all of Gwangju. You can't say you have strong feelings for the buttery treat, but you do for the little boy who fills your days with laughter and sweet memories. You could spend forever playing with him at the park by your houses…
Except your parents get the brilliant idea of starting their own restaurant in Seoul. You are heartbroken when the decision to move is made, but you do your best to support their dreams, even if it comes at the expense of your only friend.
Out of sentimentality and denial, you save the shiny candy wrapper, holding it when you're sad, as if it's a talisman that can ward off the lonely ache in your chest. It's hard being the new kid in a big-city school, and though you present your mother's strong facade when your new classmates tease you about your satoori, it hurts. You have to be strong.
After one particularly bad day, you decide to drop into the local arcade, because all it will take is one smile from your appa to disintegrate your cracking veneer. You're a big girl, basically an adult at a whopping eleven years old! You're not a baby anymore, you just need some extra time to set yourself right.
You weave through the attractions, passing racing games and claw machines when something catches your eye. A familiar yellow character smiles at you from a game cabinet, and for a moment you feel like he is still there with you.
You walk up to the Pac-man arcade machine with newfound resolve and a sunny smile to match.
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
“Sometimes I wanna drop by Gwangju,” Jung Hoseok begins, taking his seat at the dining table next to Taehyung, “But then I remember they already demolished the playplace from my childhood and think, huh, maybe not. Thing is, they sold really good tteok there.”
“Pan-fried tteok?” Taehyung leans back, remembering the taste of his own favorite rice cake flavors from Daegu. “My hometown had that, too.”
“Sometimes the cart owner-ahjussi would give us candy with our orders. I miss it a lot.”
Hobi's eyes take on a wistful look, and Taehyung pats his shoulder.
It must have been some really good candy.
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
"Honey! I'm home!" you call, setting your briefcase on the floor as your husband rushes up to you wearing a cute apron that has nothing on his sweet face and sweeter smile.
"I just finished dinner," he says, greeting you with a kiss on the cheek that makes your chest fill with the glow of a million fireflies.
"What, mudcakes again?" you ask fondly. You thread your fingers with his, uncaring of the dirt on his palms, giggling at the pout on his face.
"You said they're your favorite!" he complains petulantly, though he doesn't pull away.
"They are," you agree, squeezing his hand in yours reassuringly. You beam at him, and his cheeks turn pink. "If it's something you made, it's my favorite."
You're suddenly tugged towards him and you squeak in surprise as wiry arms crush the air out of your lungs.
"You're my favorite," he mumbles into your hair, and it's the happiest you've felt in your entire nine years of existence.
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
It's great to be back in Gwangju, away from all the insanity happening in Seoul. You can finally relax and live life rather than constantly look over your shoulder in the fear of running into another member of BTS.
Fuck you, fate! You're taking a break.
You knock on the old, familiar door, and it opens to reveal a kind, lightly lined face that breaks into a huge smile at the sight of you.
"Halmeoni!" you announce happily, stepping into your grandmother's arms and hugging her fiercely. She hugs you back just as hard, squeezing you with her deceptively spindly limbs as you melt into a hold that feels like childhood.
"We've been waiting!" she replies cheerfully before ushering you to the living room and calling your grandpa to come greet you. The house is the same as you remember, a comforting echo of days past.
"Oh! We ran into that boy you used to play with at the store earlier!" your grandma says just as you pick up your cup of tea. "The one you used to play house with!"
You laugh, thinking fondly of your childhood friend. Perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad if he had been your soulmate, rather than a group of the seven biggest idols in Korea. Or perhaps not – the things that are so simple to children don't always translate to adulthood, and those memories hold an untainted innocence that you wouldn't trade for the world.
You bring the cup of homebrewed tea to your lips, only to choke at your grandmother's next words.
"I invited him over for dinner!"
You stare at the twinkle in your suddenly menacing grandmother's eyes. In just one simple sentence, she has transformed from the kindly, loving fixture of your youth to yet another cruel, scheming matchmaker. Truly your mother’s maker. Leaving Seoul might have saved you from idol-related phenomena, but clearly not from your family's attempts at grand (and great-grand) children.
Instinct drives you to your feet and you grab your purse, tripping over the rug as you rush to the door.
"I have to go," you call over your shoulder, uncaring of the baffled expression on your grandma's face.
"But you just got here?" she says in distressed confusion, and your stomach fills with guilt at the sadness in her voice. "We haven't seen you in so long, dear."
You still, hand on the doorknob and so, so close to freedom and safety. Eventually, you sigh, shoulders slumping as the resolve trickles out of your body.
"Never mind, I'm going to take my stuff upstairs," you say in resignation, grabbing the carry-on still by the door and carting it to the guest room. The wallet feels extra heavy in your purse, and when you're safely within the confines of your room you sit on the bed and pull it out.
You reach behind the ID card in the plastic slot of your wallet and feel the soft, crinkly edges of a fond childhood memory.
You like Pac-man, right?
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
Hoseok still remembers the smile on your face whenever he gave you the extra candy he would get with his tteok in the park. As well as the thinly hidden devastation on your face the last time he saw you, and you told him your family was leaving for Seoul.
Despite him being older, he had always admired your courage and tenacity, the way you would charge head-first at the things you wanted. Your unwavering support whenever he was feeling down or uncertain. During hard times as a trainee, he would sometimes picture your determined expression and feel an extra spark of energy.
He really isn't sure what to expect, or even if he's in his right mind, coming to dinner to see his long lost… friend? Play-spouse?
Would you even remember him?
The door opens, and Hoseok's heart jumps at the sight of you. The tentative smile on your face fades into an expression of utter shock, and he belatedly remembers exactly who he is.
"Wh–what the–I–" you stammer, looking just as mortified as Hoseok feels. In his ruminations of childhood, he had completely forgotten his present state of being and how it might impact new encounters. "Can I help you?"
"Y-Y/N?" he asks tentatively. To his bafflement, you flinch as if he had screamed at you.
"How do you know my name?" you ask, stepping back with your hand on the door. You look five seconds away from slamming it in his face, and despite his misgivings, Hoseok's heart sinks. For some reason this cold reception feels worse than if you were a saesang.
"I'm… I'm here for dinner?" he says tentatively, proffering the seonmul he brought. The expression on your face is so reluctant that for a moment he takes a whiff of the bag in case the pastries from the most expensive bakery in the area have somehow gone bad.
With a spark of panic, Hoseok wonders if he accidentally went to the wrong address. The house is familiar, and you look similar to the little girl he remembers, but perhaps he's just let his hopes affect his memories. Why else would you look so shaken, other than a strange man showing up out of nowhere?
"But you're… you're not–"
"Y/N, what's taking so long?"
Relief fills him momentarily as your grandmother comes behind you, though it's tempered by the way you haven't relaxed.
"But this is… this isn't…" you stammer, face pale as you look between Hoseok and your grandmother. It hits him that you probably don't remember his real name, as you had been too young to pronounce it correctly when you had first met.
"You used to call me Hoba," he says with a smile, realizing that this is why you must be so confused – you've recognized him as Jung Hoseok of BTS, and thus not your playmate from so many years ago. "It's nice to see you again."
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
This cannot be happening.
Not only is the smiling boy from your fondest memories Jung Hoseok of BTS, but he just somehow had a break in his schedule the same weekend you're in Gwangju, and he ran into your grandmother at the supermarket? You left Seoul to get a break from these ridiculous situations and not to end up having dinner with one of your soulmates!
What kind of contrived, unimaginative bullshit is this?
"These are for you," Hoseok tells your grandmother with a formal bow, offering the pretty, pastel pastry box you had refused to accept earlier. She beams approvingly while you pinch yourself. Hard.
Through the pain in your arm, Jung Hoseok is still standing in your entryway, a sunny nightmare you can't wake up from. The old wrapper, once a magical talisman to ward off gloom, is lead weight in your pocket.
"Um," he begins awkwardly, looking bashful. It is not cute. He is not cute. "And this is for you."
He holds out a fuzzy yellow ball you immediately recognize, and you stare at it in shock. Your chest is doing something very funny, like tachycardic arrythmia. Yes. Hilarious.
Hoseok evidently takes your silence as disapproval, and wilts like a flower deprived of light. "Uh, sorry, you probably don't like Pacman anymore…"
"I do," you reply faintly, reaching forward to take his gift. Only to be polite. That's it. Certainly not because his dejection makes your insides roil with guilt. "Thank you."
"Of course," he replies, looking only marginally relieved by your lukewarm response. "Oh! You dropped something."
He dips low to grab something, and to your horror, your wallet is open –
"Wait, is this–"
"I JUST LIKE THE CANDY!" you blurt in a near scream, feeling your entire body light on fire. This would be humiliating in the best of situations, and Jung Hoseok discovering you kept the wrapper from an old candy he had given you, like a sentimental loser, is decidedly NOT the best of situations.
His resulting smile almost blasts you off your feet, and you wonder if overexposure to sunlight can lead to cardiac arrest.
“Y/N-ah,” Jung Hoseok says, tentatively, but with soft affection. It is more devastating than you could have ever imagined. “I missed you too. Have you been well?”

Bad For You - coming soon ↳ Official Teaser
Jungkook wants what he can’t have and it’s driving him nuts. He’s never thought of Natasha more than Namjoon’s annoying little sister, but that’s all changed now that she’s returned from university. Especially now that she plan to stay at his apartment until further notice. Having Tasha around takes his mind off the importance of this season, something he cannot have happen since last season ended so badly. A distraction like her might either become the biggest mistake of his life, or perhaps the best one.
Natasha know better than to sleep with the up-and-coming, all-star, fan-favorite hockey forward for the Denver Dragons. And it’s not because he’s just as much a player off the ice as he is on it. More importantly, he’s her brother’s teammate, best friend, and the guy whose place she’s crashing at. He’s been off-limits since the day she met him, but it didn’t stop her then, and it sure as fuck isn’t going to stop her now…
↠ pairing: jungkook x o.c. (dual 1st person pov) ↠ position: forward, right-wing ↠ trope: brother's best friend, forced proximity, age gap, forbidden relationship ↠ installment: 1/7

Thinking About You - coming soon
Taehyung has a secret. He's got a big, fat schoolgirl-esque crush on one of the hockey moms of the Dragon's sponsored junior league hockey team. He finds it utterly repulsive that merely catching sight of Florence sends a flurry of butterflies to the center of his stomach, an entirely foreign sensation he's not sure he enjoys. As if that wasn't bad enough, he also recently discovered that he transforms into a bumbling, incoherent mess in her presence, a behavior that is completely unlike him.
Everyone knows Kim Taehyung is the most popular guy on the team, especially in the eyes of all the puck bunnies chasing after him. He's a smooth-talking, swoon-worthy, wet-your-panties-by-simply-grinning-at-you type of ladies' man that women just can't get enough of. And based on what Florence has heard, he used to eat that shit up, using it to his advantage at every available opportunity. But now, his attention is solely fixated on her, and what's even more astonishing - on her son.
↠ pairing: taehyung x o.c. (dual 1st person pov) ↠ position: centerman ↠ trope: widower, single parent, fuckboy finally settles down ↠ installment: 2/7

Loyal To You - coming soon
Jimin has been eagerly anticipating the holidays for a while now. Not because he has anyone special to go home to or any familial commitments. He's been craving time away from the relentless demands of his career and the ice, a first for him. From the moment he first wore skates at the young age of three, hockey has consumed his entire existence. Yet now, he yearns for a much-needed break from the sport that has been his lifelong passion. Being a professional athlete has its perks (money, women, fame), but it also comes with it's fair share of downs. And lately, life has handed him a lot of downs. Upon arriving at the charming bed and breakfast where he intends to spend the next three weeks, he's instantly captivated by the attractive owner. Julie doesn't seem to recognize him, and she doesn't expect anything from him either. In that moment, he can't help but envision a different life distinct from the one he knows, one where he can be just Park Jimin instead of player #33 of the Denver Dragons.
↠ pairing: jimin x o.c. (dual 1st person pov) ↠ position: forward, left-wing ↠ trope: hidden identity, instant attraction, the big secret ↠ installment: 3/7

Made For You - coming soon
Namjoon has lately found himself thoroughly intrigued by the team photographer for the Dragons. He and Avery have shared a friendship for quite some time, frequently crossing paths at the favored bar of DD Organization and often catching glimpses of each other nearly every day at the arena. He's taken aback by the fact that he's interested in her, considering that they are such polar opposites. He's usually quiet and reserved, channeling his energy into the game and his responsibilities. In contrast, Avery radiates a lively and outgoing presence, greeting people with warmth and capturing candid moments with quick snaps of your camera. When Namjoon finally musters the courage to ask her out, a small comment from you about seeing him as one of your closest friends shatters his spirit before he even gets the chance. Apparently, fate has dictated that they are destined to be just friends, or perhaps he simply needs to sway her perspective...
↠ pairing: namjoon x o.c. (dual 1st person pov) ↠ position: defenseman ↠ trope: coworkers, opposites attract, friends to lovers ↠ installment: 4/7
Tumblr media
Lost In You - coming soon
Hoseok is a wild card, and the Denver Dragons Organization has just about had it. It's time for him to simmer down before he's off the ice for good. Their plan? Marriage. Yes, that's right. Hoseok is getting married to a snotty socialite, and the whole arrangement is meant to heal his status in the eyes of the rest of the world. He knows damn well he is the only person to blame for this PR stunt to be his last chance to redeem his shitty reputation. Coach made it very clear that not a single other team expressed any interest in trading for him if he kept heading in his current direction. Between all the fights, the public intoxication charges, and the constant news stories about him, it was bound to happen at some point. He just needs to make it through the next two years without losing it again. A feat that he finds nearly impossible when he's forced to be around Blair, his wife.
↠ pairing: hoseok x o.c. (dual 1st person pov) ↠ position: alternate captain, defenseman ↠ trope: married for convenience, enemies to lovers ↠ installment: 5/7
Tumblr media
Searching For You - coming soon
After a complicated fallout with his now ex-fiance, Yoongi has made a recent vow to avoid anything and anyone associated with love. He has no time or use for it. Having weathered numerous failed relationships, his most recent resulting in calling off his wedding the night before, he possesses no need to subject himself to that kind of pain or heartbreak ever again. Especially not with someone as joyful and optimistic as Sage.
People often avoid Yoongi because of his cranky behavior, but Sage questions how much of it is his true personality versus a defence mechanism. It doesn't help that just simply observing Sage's perpetual good mood only seems to piss him off even further. But nevertheless, she's taken notice of him, and has undertaken a challenge of sorts to brighten the mood of the grumpy hockey player who often visits her bagel shop and get him to open up. The problem? He doesn't like to lose, and neither does she.
↠ pairing: yoongi x o.c. (dual 1st person pov) ↠ position: goalie ↠ trope: grumpy sunshine, sworn off relationships ↠ installment: 6/7
Tumblr media
Trapped By You - coming soon
Seokjin has had very few moments in his life that have rendered him utterly speechless. Unfortunately, this seems to be one of them. Ophelia is the last person he anticipated seeing on his doorstep so early in the morning. One night stands are supposed to be just that - one night of fun without the moral obligation to see that person ever again. But here she was, nearly four months later, changing that 'rule' with her smudged mascara and a handful of positive pregnancy tests.
Ophelia always assumed she would have a baby at some point in her life; maybe a few years after getting married to the love of her life, when the timing felt right. But right now felt so wrong. She didn't love Seokjin; they barely even know each other. It wasn't supposed to happen like this, and most certainly not with the Captain of the Denver Dragons.
↠ pairing: seokjin x o.c. (dual 1st person pov) ↠ position: captain, centerman ↠ trope: one night stand pregnancy, strangers to lovers ↠ installment: 7/7

Like a Lotus Flower: The Overarching Narrative of Agust D
Min Yoongi is an idol. Min Yoongi is a songwriter, a lyricist, a composer and a producer. Min Yoongi is a rapper, a dancer, and a performer. Min Yoongi is an ambassador to global brands. Min Yoongi is SUGA, is Agust D.
Underneath all of this, Min Yoongi is a storyteller.
Storytelling is at the core of every creative endeavor he undertakes, be it his verses in BTS's songs or his solo music videos. His songs are an effort to paint the story of BTS SUGA's extraordinary life and Min Yoongi's very human struggles, and all the places where they meet. However, it's never been clearer than it is in the Agust D trilogy and its accompanying media.

This article, in return, is an effort to summarize and explore all the parts that make up the lore and the myth of Agust D as a character—the music, the lyrics, the videography, and the concert tour.
Let's weave through all these components as we try to unravel the story of Min Yoongi's three personas.
Disclaimer: All lyrics, pictures, and quotes in this essay do not belong to me. Translations are paraphrased by me, with the help of doolset lyrics, Genius and Google Translate. For more accurate translations, please visit above mentioned sources. All interpretations of themes, topics, and concepts mentioned below are mine and may not match the artist's intent.
WHAT HAPPENS IF BANGTAN RISES?
Agust D—the sharp-edged alter ego of BTS' SUGA—has been a beloved figure among fans ever since the release of his first self-titled mixtape in 2016. If you don't know who he is, let me introduce you—very shortly and then very comprehensively.
Min Yoongi is a Korean rapper and producer, who rose to fame as 1/7th of the idol group BTS. Known mostly under his stage name SUGA, he's climbed every social and musical peak you can think of. His group has been streamed more than 40 billion times across all platforms and holds many world records that will remain nigh impossible to break for years to come.
To fully grasp the scope of SUGA's solo works and the themes therein, we need to understand the history of BTS. SUGA's work is always deeply personal and to comprehend its depth, knowledge about his situation is beneficial. The music, themes and topics he explores in his music are going to be wildly different depending on where he was at anz point in time, both as an idol group member and a person.
Progress to some steps which are a bit more difficult
BTS hail from a once small production agency Big Hit Entertainment. However incomprehensible it may seem now, BTS's entertainment agency was for a long time on the brink of bankruptcy. After BTS debuted in 2013, they were Big Hit's only active idol act for a long, long time, and they didn't receive acclaim and success instantly. The road to the BTS we know today has been long and winding and hard. Their first significant success—a win at a weekly Korean music show with their single I Need U—came in 2015, two years after their debut. It is, in retrospect, a small victory, but one that felt monumental at the time.
It's hard to pinpoint when BTS truly hit it big, but to me, it's this—the release of their 2016 album Wings and their massive hit Blood, Sweat & Tears, their very first foray into international stardom.

2016 marked another milestone for BTS—their first major award win. As of today, BTS hold the record for most received Daesangs, major awards, but when they won their first, they stood on the stage and wept.
However, before BTS started sweeping Korean awards and made their big break overseas, just on the brink of getting big, 23 years old Min Yoongi released his first eponymous mixtape.
Fame, Money, Success
Agust D the mixtape, released in 2016, is SUGA's first solo endeavor and first proper introduction to Agust D the persona.
It's anyone's guess what Min Yoongi thinks of being an idol at that point. It's a fair assumption, though, that it's not all sunshine and roses. His group is struggling for success, his agency is struggling to survive, and according to his lyrics, Min Yoongi is just struggling.
At the time, SUGA and his group member RM (then known as Rap Monster) were facing criticism and ire from their hip-hop contemporaries. Allegations of selling out, inauthenticity, or mockery of their idolhood were not strange to them. Their very public altercation with an older rapper is well documented—videos of the rapper's hostility towards them at a radio show are widely available online.
It's not surprising the theme of selling out, the price of fame and success, and artistic integrity plays a big part in Agust D's first mixtape.
Agust D oscillates wildly in his approach to it, however. In the title track Agust D, he addresses the allegations head on with ferocity and anger that will come to characterize him for a long time.
They say I made it too easily Fuck you, I'm a pain in the ass of those far from success [...] All you fried rappers should be thankful that I'm an idol  "Agust D" - Agust D, Agust D
Even the video plays on this anger—it starts with Agust D shackled and bound in a decrepit trailer, breaking free to wreak havoc on his immediate surroundings.
The next song on the record and the second single, give it to me, carries on in much the same vein. It's also the first exploration into another prominent theme—greed. Agust D makes it no secret that he yearns for money, fame, and spotlight.
Money, fame, anything is fine, just bring it to me Fame, flash light Gi-give it to me "give it to me" - Agust D, Agust D
The MV also seems to be a direct sequel to the previous video—the freed Agust D makes his way into the wider world, bruised and bloodied, but unafraid, hungry for success, and ready to take on a challenge.

This hunger for wealth and accolades will come into play once Min Yoongi acquires them, but it's easy to see why it would be such an important thing to him then. In the face of adversity, failure and poverty, money and success are a symbol that he's made it. That the naysayers were wrong about him, and his artistic integrity didn't take a blow for no reason.
Min Yoongi is already dead (I killed him)
The dark side of Min Yoongi's situation is explored further in the crown jewel of the mixtape, the track The Last. It's a dark, grimy mirror to the cheeky Agust D calling his contemporaries lazy and fake.
While boasting the same gritty atmosphere as the rest of the record, this song's mood is undeniably different—darker, more raw, more painful. The Last is no less a diss track than Agust D or give it to me, but this time, it's aimed at Min Yoongi himself.
Behind the idol rapper  Is my weak self, a bit dangerous  "The Last" - Agust D, Agust D
The hunger for success that was presented as a virtue in give it to me is now a vice. Agust D goes as far as to call it monstrous, something that threatens to swallow him. He admits that his callousness is an armor to hide his weakness.
With time, I'm turning into a monster The monster I exchanged my youth for, success, demands more My greed used to be a weapon, now it swallows me, ruins me, leashes me "The Last" - Agust D, Agust D
This song sets not only a precedent for the rest of Min Yoongi's art, but introduces another red line that intermingles throughout it—the death of self. Agust D declares Min Yoongi, his original, his creator, to be dead by his hand.
Whether this alludes to literal or metaphysical death is up for speculation—the part of the song that could have answered this is redacted, maybe to stimulate the listener's thoughts, maybe to shock them. But when Agust D grits these words out, you believe him—Min Yoongi, at least in some way, doesn't exist anymore.
Such is the price of success.
This is the first real look we get at Min Yoongi's exposed, bleeding core. It's not often that an idol gets so candid about their mental health or the bad and the ugly of idolhood, and this song unsurprisingly came as a shock to many. Even sound wise, this is far from k-pop's usual bubbly and colorful shine. It's proof that Agust D is not here to play, and a testament to Min Yoongi's desire for authenticity.
This is further cemented by the final piece on the record, the crooning ballad So Far Away. A duet with Korean singer Suran, it explores the idea of a life without desire and ambition. It's a stark contrast to the start of the mixtape, where Agust D boasted about his success and accomplishments, and threatened anyone who dared question him. It's also a painful resolution to the wounded admissions of The Last.
Agust D, by design, is a creature of contradiction, and Agust D the mixtape is a piece of history of one of k-pop's most interesting figures. A first step in a fascinating journey of self-discovery, it's a record that only Min Yoongi could have created, and only in this particular pocket in time.
It will take him four long years to follow up.
I'm a king, I'm a boss
The day is 20th May 2020. The world is deep in the throes of a global pandemic and Agust D makes a comeback.
Min Yoongi is in a completely different situation. Since the release of Agust D, BTS shot to global superstardom. In his previous mixtape, Agust D confessed how embarrassing his song Ssaihanuwar is. The song brags about BTS having sold 30.000 record copies.
Honestly, Ssaihanuwar is embarrassing We sell half a million copies a year now "Agust D" - Agust D, Agust D
At the time of the second mixtape's release, BTS's latest album Map of the Soul: 7 sold more than 4 million copies in its first week.
It's almost ironic. In 2016, Agust D grappled with his desire for success and the understanding of how it's destroying him. Now, he seemingly has it all. The greed he called so monstrous and all-encompassing has won.
I got a big house, big car, big ring
D-2, the second mixtape of the trilogy, is in many ways a direct response to the first. In Daechwita, the lead and only single from this record, he exchanged western-style marching drums from Agust D for Korean marching music, traditionally played to accompany a king's procession. It's a statement to his listeners—he's an undisputed ruler of his genre, and his arrival should be met with proper reaction.
This is also visually represented in the song's music video, where SUGA plays the double-role of a corrupt, crazed King and a Rebel on a path to destroy him. He gives visual form to a topic so prominent in Agust D—the fight between greed and integrity. The King is arguably the same Agust D we've seen destitute and furious in his previous two videos, Agust D and give it to me. Now, he's driven mad by power and wealth, parading around with his opponents' decapitated heads.
I got everything I wanted—what else do I need to feel satisfied? I got the clothes, then the money, then the goal—what comes next? I realize my situation—there's nothing above me to strive for "Daechwita" - Agust D, D-2
Meanwhile, the Rebel mucks about with the commoners, making connections. The two protagonists are clearly one and the same, both sporting a matching raw scar across one eye, but each features on a different part of a spectrum. They contradict each other. Their conflict is even given a resolution this time—the Rebel shoots the King, killing him.
The status is reset. It's now the Rebel's turn to succeed. The King is dead; long live the King.
The cycle continues.

If Daechwita is a response to Agust D, the next song What do you think? is a response to give it to me—a humblebrag exploring life, creativity and artistry after unprecedented fame.
In 2013, SUGA asked for 'a big house, big car and big rings'. In 2016, Agust D begged for fame and the spotlight. Now he has it all. He doesn't need to ask—whatever is brought his way, he can afford it. The question of integrity seems meaningless in the face of his overwhelming success.
The ten zeros in my bank account, I paid for that money with my youth I'll get a big car, big house, big ring, or whatever, take my black card [...] I don't fucking care if idol music is music I'm high, higher, I'm so high you can't even see me "What do you think?" - Agust D, D-2
Art is what he dictates it is. The masses seem to agree. And so another question arises—what comes next if you have achieved all of your dreams?
To live, to live, to live
The comfort of success gives SUGA the space to ask existential questions—what is the meaning of life if not hardship? Why am I here, if I've reached all my goals and more?
D-2, compared to the eponymous mixtape, is both much more external and brooding in this exploration, be it in the track Strange (featuring his bandmate RM), 28 (featuring Korean singer NiiHWA), or in the probably most important track of the record—People.
While all previous tracks on the record sound like something Agust D would have made—coarse, gritty, and cutting—this bittersweet, melancholic ballad marks the first significant sidestep into a stylistic change.
Am I a good person? Am I a bad person? However you look at it, I too am just a person "People" - Agust D, D-2
This gentle approach feels new to Agust D, even though it subtly recalls themes from his previous work. The Last especially comes to mind, with its lyrics about how monstrous his lust for success is. People, on the other hand, offers comfort—not only to the listener, but to Min Yoongi himself.
It feels like something Agust D in 2016 couldn't have done.
D-Day's coming—it's a fucking good day
Two years after the release of D-2, BTS soft-launched their hiatus. The members are set to start their military service, and before they leave their fans for an extended period of time, they decided to focus more on solo activities to make the transition smoother, shorter, and less lonely.
It's no surprise that Agust D, too, announces his latest installment, titled simply D-DAY. The announcement follows an earlier one about an extensive tour across the United States and Asia, spanning over four months and 28 shows total.
Slaves to hatred and prejudice
The release of D-DAY is accompanied by three singles. The pre-release track People pt. 2 is, unsurprisingly, a spiritual and literal successor to D-2's People. The jazzy pop ballad, featuring Korean singer-songwriter IU, follows in People's footsteps, exploring the themes of human connection or loneliness. The music video, almost shockingly, shows Agust D at his most vulnerable—dressed in comfortable clothes and barefoot, but ultimately alone, haunting a luxurious mansion.
Tumblr media

On the last record, the soft comfort of People was for the faithful listeners only. Now, it heralds Agust D's return, unashamed. It's a first sign of integration of the three personas—the furious Agust D, the proud and accomplished SUGA, and the wounded Min Yoongi—into a single entity.
However, the edgy Agust D returns only a few days later with the release of Haegeum. As the main single of the album, Haegeum speaks mostly of freedom and self-indulgence, and how closely the two play together. A critique of both the sensationalist press and the public that consumes controversy mindlessly, the song is a less traditional diss track than Agust D or Daechwita, but it's no less scathing.
Endless influx of information that prohibits freedom of imagination and seeks conformity All these painful noises that blind you, and even infringe on freedom of thought All the controversy incessantly triggers confusion in judgment  And is fabricated over and over again "Haegeum" - Agust D, D-DAY
The video, an important piece of the Agust D puzzle, is an indirect sequel to Daechwita. The protagonists, the King and the Rebel, are now represented by the Detective and the Thief. The detective carries Agust D's scar, and his legacy. The Thief's face, however, is surprisingly bare.
The story starts out as any other noir fiction does—the Thief murders and steals, and the Detective works tirelessly to catch him. We find out very quickly what the twist is—the dirty money the Thief stole belongs to the Detective. The healed scar across his eye betrays him—he's the Rebel from Daechwita, and his success corrupted him yet again.
Knowing this, you are seemingly meant to cheer for the scar-less Thief as he outsmarts the Detective and disposes of him.
Tumblr media
Credit: Agust D 'Haegeum' Official MV - HYBE LABELS
However, it's important to note that Agust D doesn't seem to make a clear distinction in who's the hero and who's the villain. When the Thief succeeds and returns to the scene of his crime, he eats using the same red chopsticks he used to kill a man. We're reminded that while he doesn't bare Agust D's scar, his hands are dirty as well.
You understand, then, why the Detective laughed in the face of death. Agust D had, once again, failed to kill this part of him. The cycle of greed and corruption will keep repeating forever.
The never-ending trials that failed to kill me
The third and last MV for the track Amygdala is released 3 days later, completing Agust D's cinematic universe. It doesn't feature elaborate settings, but presents a very human story—the story of Min Yoongi's real trauma. Disheveled and washed out, the rapper sits in an empty room, suspended in nothing at all. In front of him stands a closed white door, a way out, as if to taunt him.
We get to watch as he relives his most agonizing memories over and over again—including his traffic accident that nearly crippled him, and sentenced him to years of chronic pain.
I can only hope that all my choices were the right ones Because they too are in the past now Could it be that all these trials are for my benefit? "AMYGDALA" - Agust D, D-DAY
Everytime Min Yoongi attempts to escape the room, his tries are thwarted—the room tilts until he's forced to crawl uphill, or it begins to rain, making his climb even harder. The door remains out of his reach, as if he's never going to be free of the ache.
It's here that we witness the birth of Agust D and the origin of his most defining feature. His scar. In the end, it's quite simple—the greatest hurt is the one we inflict upon ourselves.
This MV doesn't end happily, or actually at all. The Min Yoongi trapped in his own psyche isn't able to get out, isn't able to stop reliving his past, and isn't able to change it. The video ends with Min Yoongi, or maybe with Agust D, lying wounded and defeated on the ground amidst a storm. Unable to heal from his trauma.

It's an end to a story, but not the end of Min Yoongi's story.
For this day, I've wandered through the maze
D-DAY, technically Agust D's debut album, is released only five days before his world tour kicks off—making the album forever tied to its live accompaniment. It would have been preposterous to expect SUGA to create a tour that doesn't tie to his established lore, or that doesn't have any deeper meaning, anyway.
At first glance, the production is quite simple—a plain, rectangular stage with a large projection behind it. Before the show starts, the screen plays a looped recording of rain on a dark background, accompanied by the occasional thunder—the atmospheric backdrop makes it quite clear that from the moment you enter the venue, you are part of Agust D's vision.
It's then that you notice the peculiarities. The stage, a metal grid segmented into fifteen individual parts, hangs suspended on chains from the venue's ceiling.
Conceptually, the production directly ties into AMYGDALA, the MV. The show kicks off with a literal bang—a sound of screeching tires and a crash. Agust D is then carried, lifeless, onto the stage accompanied by the haunting wail of a haegeum.
Tumblr media
Credit: SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' in JAPAN - Big Hit Music
He's laid down on the floor in the same position we've seen him in before, both in AMYGDALA and in Haegeum. We are now in the moment where the music videos left off. Physically in the room with him, we are a part of Agust D's mind, and about to witness him rise from the dead to tell his story.
The concerts cut through the entirety of Agust D's discography, from Agust D to D-DAY. As each show progresses, the segments of the stage lift one by one, exposing the technical production beneath. This not only bares the raw production elements to the audience, but also takes away from the performer's space—to perform, and to exist.
By the time the setlist progresses to AMYGDALA, there's only one stage segment left for Agust D to stand on. The exposed flame machines fire all around him as the narrative really hammers it home—this is Agust D's own, personal purgatory, and you're here to witness his pain.
Tumblr media
Credit: SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' in JAPAN - Big Hit Music
As the song nears its end, Agust D collapses on the stage, once again lifeless. The death of self, first explored in The Last all those years ago, comes into play once again. The artist fulfilled his purpose—your entertainment. Emptied out and driven into a corner, he falls lifeless to the ground and is carried off again. The show goes full circle to its start, as if nothing had ever happened.
Much had happened, though. Over the course of the show, Agust D unearthed his entire musical and artistic history for you, the viewer. From the opening tones of Haegeum to the last notes of AMYGDALA and everything in between, the artist exposed his inner core to us. Just as the stage slowly lifted away, so did all pretense—Agust D, SUGA, and Min Yoongi became one.
Future's gonna be okay
With the last segment lifted out of view, the stage exists no more. The inner mind of Agust D has been taken apart, the pedestal is gone, and what's left is Min Yoongi on the venue's floor, eye-to-eye with his fans for the last three songs.
It's no coincidence that The Last is the closing cut of the show. Besides its title predicting its place in the setlist, it's also a key track of Min Yoongi's career. Ending the show with such an emotional, deep track only confirms his understanding of the fact. It's a message not only to his audience, but to himself as well—he performs the song he wrote about his struggles, faced with tangible adoration from his fans, as if to say, 'This is the fruit of my labor. This makes the suffering worth it.' But it's also a reminder of where he came from.
When the show ends, Agust D usually power walks backstage with barely a glance back. He doesn't linger with the audience—the past is the past, including these moments of joy.
It's in the very last show of the tour that the story comes to its conclusion. As the show ends and the band plays, the door from the AMYGDALA video appears behind Agust D. In the music video it was as impenetrable as a solid wall. Now, he opens it without issue and walks through.
It's not only the end of a show, or the end of a tour. It's a closure of a decade long chapter of Min Yoongi's life—through his effort, and with the help from his audience, he is finally healed.
Tumblr media
Credit: SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' The Original - Big Hit Music
The journey of Agust D has, at least for now, come to a close. We've seen Min Yoongi go through struggles and hardships, and have witnessed him maturing into an artist capable of facing his own demons and overcoming them. The anger, at least in that one triumphant moment, can be laid to rest.
SUGA addressed the future of Agust D in the 'Thanks to' section of D-DAY, the final installment:
"After I wrap up the Agust D trilogy, I don't know when he will be back. But when I have more to say, and thousands of emotions, and when the devil in my right hand wakes up again, that's when he'll return."
It's hard to say what kind of emotions or music Min Yoongi chooses to convey next, whether as SUGA, or Agust D, or even as someone completely new. What I do know is that when that time comes, I will help hold that door open.

Chapter Ten
Summary: How many men will it take to save you? To be honest, you’ve gotten pretty used to saving yourself. Even though you’re far from a delicate thing, Los Angeles is a dangerous place you can’t seem to escape no matter how hard you try. The top 7 members of Bangtan should never have crossed your path, but they soon find they’d do just about anything to help you escape your past and make it safe for you to stay. But will you?
Genre: mafia au, poly ot7, angst, some smut, honestly a lot more fluff than i expected, POC reader/oc
A/n (from sopebubbles): Starting with this chapter, Fighter has officially become a collaboration between sopebubbles and beastie. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for repeatedly rescuing this story from the garbage on the many occasions that I decided I completely hated it. Without her we would have stopped at chapter 4. From here on out the chapters will be written by both of us or her alone. You're in great hands because she's much smarter, funnier and more creative than me, with an EQ that is frankly off the charts. So please be nice to my emotional support beastie. And thank you for sticking with this story. I promise from her on out things will get better for our girl. 🧼
Warnings: blood, some angst, but honestly the fluffiest chapter we've had so far!
Word count: 5.2K

You wished you could say the happy bubble from the dinner you had with the guys made you feel safe, but you woke up with the full weight of your reality on you. Namjoon may have said you could stay as long as you wanted, and you may have shared a few lighthearted moments, but if you weren't going to outstay your welcome or if you were ever going to know any peace, you'd have to get rid of Joaquin. And you weren't going to be able to do that sitting on your ass and feeling sorry for yourself anymore. You dragged yourself out of bed to find some work out clothes before going out in search of Jungkook.
You found him, as one normally would at this hour, by the pool, practically falling asleep in the warm morning sun. You cleared your throat to get his attention.
"Morning, Val," he greeted you without opening his eyes.
You nudged him with your bare foot. "Let's get back to training."
Jungkook opened his eyes the smallest amount to squint up at you. "You can't train."
"Yes, I can. I'm ready, and there's no time to waste."
"No, Val. You got like thirty stitches yesterday, and I'm not going to get yelled at by Yoongi for you ripping them. Forget it. Take a few days of rest," he told you and closed his eyes again, angling his face away from you.
Jungkook didn't understand your urgency. In his mind, you had all the time in the world to accomplish your goal of taking out your enemy. And Jungkook agreed he needed to die. In fact, he was more than willing to take care of the issue himself. Namjoon had already declared that the man would die before your safety would be jeopardized again, so it was only a matter of time, practically a done deal. In the meantime, you needed to heal and get strong. It seemed obvious to him. But he didn't know how stubborn you could be.
You tried to hide your sigh of frustration as you marched back into the house. You passed through the kitchen, having no interest in food. Yoongi was still asleep. You weren't sure what Namjoon's sleeping habits were, but there didn't seem to be any sign of him in the house. He could be in the gym, but you decided to risk it anyway. You crept down the stairs only to find it dark and quiet. Evidently Jimin didn't rise early either. Satisfied that you would go unnoticed, you continued down to the gym and closed the door behind you.
You took your time to stretch and release the tension stored in your muscles. You did some leg exercises to get into a calm state, skipping over your ab work out for the time being. When you were finally feeling steady, you stepped up to the heavy bag and began practicing combinations. Jab, cross. Jab, jab, cross. A steady rhythm as you worked up a sweat. You tried not to picture his face, you really did, but as you put more force into your movements, you couldn't help imagining fighting your tormentor. His voice began to play in your head and before long you could feel his hands on your body. In the last week he had shown you just how much more powerful he was than you now. There was a time that you could really fight him off of you, but not now. You wouldn't be okay until you were stronger, and you wouldn't be stronger unless you worked harder. Why didn't Jungkook—or anyone—seem to understand that.
You lost all sense of how long you'd been down there or how much noise you were making as the volume of your grunts grew louder. It wasn't enough to wake up Jimin—or Taehyung, who was sleeping soundly in that Jimin's bed—but it was enough for Yoongi to find out where you were after he'd checked your bedroom and found it empty. Once he caught a whisper of it, he only had to follow your angry cries to the basement. He traced the sounds curiously down the hallway until he discovered them coming from the gym and rushed inside.
"Val, what the hell are you doing?" He shouted at you as you continued to punch the heavy bag, but you were so lost to fighting your invisible demons that you didn't hear him. At first, he was cautious about approaching you, not wanting to get caught on the wrong end of your fist, but as soon as he saw the blood staining your shirt, he didn't hesitate to act. He walked behind you and wrapped his arms around you, calling your name. Mistaking him for an enemy, you thrashed against him and tried to fight him off, but Yoongi didn't give up. He held you tighter against his chest and pressed his cheek against your head.
"Val, you have to stop. You're hurting yourself," he said calmly in your ear.
"No," you grunted, still trying to twist your body away from him. "Tengo que…tengo…" You struggled to get your words out as your mind tried to process Yoongi's arms holding you down and the scenario that had been playing in your mind. "Necesito…"
"I know," Yoongi said softly, his lips grazing the shell of your ear. "I know you do. Let me help you. Let me help." Your body started to relax against Yoongi's and go limp as he spoke gently to you. As your weight sank into him he felt your sob before he heard it. Your knees buckled and you went to the ground taking him with you as you began to cry, words falling from your mouth that no one would be able to understand, but he didn't need to in order to know how much pain you were in.
"Shh. It's okay, sweetheart. I've got you," he soothed, rocking you back and forth. It took a couple of minutes for you to calm down, until your tears fell silently. Yoongi looked to the door where Taehyung and Jimin looked in, pulled from bed by the sound of your outburst. Yoongi made eye contact with Taehyung, exchanging a pained look, but you weren't aware of their presence and they figured it was best that way, so Taehyung took Jimin by the hand and led him back to his room. When they were gone, Yoongi turned you around in his arms and wiped your cheeks with his thumbs.
"It's okay. You're alright, now, hm?" You swallowed hard, feeling embarrassed looking at him, and nodded. "You tore your stitches, sweetheart. Let's go upstairs so I can fix it, okay?"
"I'm okay," you responded reflexively. You hadn't felt any pain, but it was only that you hadn't noticed. When you looked down you could see the red stain on your shirt. "Ay, chingada," you muttered.
"It's alright. I'm an expert at getting blood out of things. Let's just patch you up first, okay?" Yoongi got to his feet before helping you up and led you slowly down the hall and up the stairs to his clinic.
After he sat you down he moved quickly about his space to gather all the necessary supplies, and you removed your shirt. You were glad it was only Yoongi who found you—at least as far as you knew. Yoongi knew more about your broken parts than anyone else. What were a few more cracks at this point? He couldn't possibly think you any weaker than he already did, could he?
You didn't realize that Yoongi thought just the opposite. That maybe you were just a bit too strong to know when to take care of yourself. He knew you were strong because you wouldn't have survived this long otherwise. But maybe what you needed wasn't strength, but gentleness. You needed healing and care and all the things you wouldn't or couldn't give yourself. If only you'd let him give them to you.
Yoongi pulled up a chair and sat to examine the damage you had done. Once he cleaned the blood away it wasn't too bad, but he would still have to restitch you. He sighed heavily to himself as he began to remove the old stitches.
"You know, this would have healed very nicely and maybe not even left a scar if you had just been patient and let it heal," Yoongi told you softly as we worked, cutting and pulling the bits of thread from your skin.
"What's another scar?" you mumbled, looking away from him.
"It doesn't matter," he admitted. "None of them do."
You scoffed at the way he said that as if he believed it, as if the marks didn't disgust him. He looked up at you with serious eyes. His thumb stroked one of the ones on your side right where your waist was the smallest.
Your breath caught in your throat. You had no idea how to respond to that or his touch or the way he was looking at you. You didn't know what to do with the warmth that spread through your chest at all of it.
"They don't. They don't matter at all. What matters is that you're healthy and strong."
"I'm trying to get strong," you muttered as your eyes got watery again.
Yoongi shook his head as he took his hand away and focused on threading his needle. "This isn't the way, Val. You need serious rest. You need to spend at least a week recovering from all that you've been through. When you're truly healthy, then you can focus on building up your strength again. Your body can't work any other way."
"You don't know what my body can do, Doc," you muttered bitterly. "And I don't have time to sit around on my nalgas and wait for something else to happen."
"You're safe here, Val. Nothing is going to happen to you. You have as much time as it takes."
"You don't understand!"
"No, you don't understand!" He snapped back. "You remember when you told us your story when you first asked for our help. You said you got to the point where you realized you had to heal and get strong before you'd be able to leave. That's this point. You have to give it time or it will never happen."
"Oppa," you said softly and he looked up into your eyes. "It never happened then either. I've never been able to leave. I've never been safe."
His eyes filled with sadness but he didn't look away from yours. "But you are now. Everyone in this house would do anything necessary to protect you. We'd each kill him ourselves just to keep you safe. What you have to do is rest and heal. We'll do everything else," he promised.
"Why?" You asked in a small voice.
That had Yoongi searching for words, not that he didn't know the answer, but he didn't know what to say. Confessing to you would be ridiculous right now, confessing for others, even more so. He was pretty sure you wouldn't believe him.
"That's a silly question," he mumbled and went back to stitching.
"Oppa," you started without knowing where to go.
Yoongi shook his head again. "Just promise me you'll rest. That's the only thing for you to do. Watch some Netflix. Read a book. Do anything but work out for the next week and I promise it will be worth it."
"Okay," you agreed quietly and sat still while he finished your stitches.
When he was done, Yoongi looked down at your hands and sighed. "Bare knuckles?" He asked, lifting one of your red hands. A few knuckles were bleeding, but not too much.
"If I get my hands on him it will be with my bare hands, oppa," you reasoned.
He couldn't tell you how much he hoped that would never happen; how he hoped one of the boys would take care of it for you; how he would even do it himself so you didn't have to. But you didn't need to hear that from him and you wouldn't. "I don't suppose you'd ice them."
You gave him a small smile and shook your head. "They're used to it, believe me."
Yoongi frowned and traced his thumb so lightly over one of your knuckles. "You know, just because you're used to living a certain way doesn't mean you have to keep living that way." He looked up into your eyes. "You can do more than just survive, Val."
Your smile flickered. You weren't sure if you believed him. "Maybe when all this is over."
He nodded. "Let me put a bandage on and I'll get you a shirt."
You stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. "I actually really need a shower," you admitted shamefully.
"Right. That's a good idea. I can give you a bandage if you think you can put it on yourself. Or you can come back down when you're done. Or text me and I'll come up," Yoongi rambled, trying not to think about you in the shower, even though you were already half naked in front of him.
"Actually," you looked away from him, fixing your eyes on your feet. "I'm afraid I'll get a bit side tracked. It's just something that happens and today I'm feeling a little…"
You let your words trail off, but Yoongi understood. Jimin had described the way he found you yesterday to him before you came down to dinner.
"Sure. I'll come up in about thirty minutes and finish patching you up. Does that sound okay?"
You nodded shyly. "Thanks, oppa. I don't deserve you."
Yoongi caught your hand as you slipped off the exam table. "Don't ever say that, Val. You do. I'd do anything for you, even if you didn't deserve it, but you do."
Your cheeks warmed as you turned away and slipped your bloody shirt on to make the journey upstairs. "I'll see you soon," you mumbled before you left in a hurry, avoiding his eyes.
Yoongi had such a kind heart and pure soul it almost made you forget whose house you were in and who he worked for. Yoongi didn't belong here. You thought he must have seen you as so incredibly broken, like a wounded bird that needed healing before it could be expected to survive in nature again. You hated his pity as much as you loved the warm feeling you got when he treated you so tenderly. No one had ever handled you so gently or cared for you so openly in your whole life. You'd have to do what he asked and heal quickly, if only for him to see how strong you could be too.
Tumblr media
You tried really hard to keep your promise to Yoongi to rest and heal. It wasn't easy though. You'd always had plenty of energy and enjoyed being physical. It wouldn't have been so bad except that they also insisted on keeping you inside the house, so that Joaquin couldn't get to you. Just twenty-four hours after Yoongi had fixed you up once again you were already climbing the walls.
You crept down the stairs to the basement after casually checking to see if Yoongi was in his clinic, but he was absent. You were just going to take an innocent look into the gym. If Jungkook was there you could keep him company while he worked out. When you got to the bottom of the stairs though, you found Jimin watching a Korean show on the giant screen—at least you thought it sounded like Korean. You could see the back of Jimin's head over the large, L-shaped couch that dominated the room, and you assumed he was alone. You tried to quietly slip past the central space toward your destination.
"Where do you think you're going?" Yoongi's voice sounded accusatory from behind. You winced automatically.
"I think I left something in the gym yesterday," you lied without turning to face him.
"No, you didn't. I've checked," Yoongi smirked. He had been laying down on the soft, comfortable couch, but he sat up to look at you as you turned around.
"Okay, then." You gave in easily, not wanting to look like you were planning to break your promise—which you weren't.
"Why don't you come watch with us for a while," Yoongi offered, making a space for you between him and Jimin. You were going to decline, but you really didn't have anything better to do, so you went and sat between them.
"I can put on subtitles," Jimin offered, already clicking a button on the remote to make the words appear on the screen. You chuckled and he looked at you curiously since it was a dramatic scene.
"I can't read English, Jimin," you admitted. His lips parted in surprise and a little embarrassment at his assumption, but he quickly clicked through to find Spanish subtitles. Truthfully that wasn't a great help either, but you really didn't care. You'd learned English mostly by watching TV since you were rarely allowed to go out except for training when you lived with Joaquin. You didn't think you were going to pay much attention to the show anyway, but the drama sucked you in quickly, with a little help from Jimin and Yoongi telling you bits about the characters and things you had missed already in the series. Luckily they weren't too far into it yet. Occasionally they would explain things about Korean culture that were relevant to things on screen so that you would understand better. But mostly you just watched, eyes never leaving the screen as you paid more attention to the actions and facial expressions of the characters than the words that went by too fast for you to read.
You were so absorbed in watching, you didn't see the way Yoongi smiled at you, pleased to have found a way to distract you. He could get you to binge dozens of kdramas and escape into fantasies while your body rested and healed. He wondered if you would like anime? He could spend hours watching with you to make sure you didn't lift a finger. He didn't mind one bit watching your face while you focused intently on the story either. His eyes traced every feature, observing every slight shift in your expression as you did your best to work out what was happening.
Several hours into watching, while you had your attention fixed on the show, Yoongi hopped up the stairs to go to the kitchen for snacks. You still hadn't shown a clear preference for salty or sweet snacks, but when he thought about it, he hadn't really known you that long. Merely a week. He didn't really know your preferences on anything, but he desperately wanted to learn. He popped a bag of popcorn in the microwave and gathered a package of Oreos and his favorite chips from the pantry. He poured the steaming bag of popcorn into a bowl and grabbed a soda and a bottle of water from the fridge before he trapsed back down the stairs with his arms full.
He plopped back down on the couch, leaving a foot or so between you, where he laid out the things he'd brought, seeing what you would choose.
"Take whatever you want," he said quietly when you only looked at the items but were too hesitant to take anything. You considered a moment longer, your eyes flickering up to his once to see if there was a wrong answer before you grabbed the water bottle. He watched as you grabbed a handful of popcorn, lifting it to your mouth while you turned your attention back to the screen, completely ignoring the cookies. He settled back into the couch and opened the can of soda with a pop.
"Did you bring anything for me, hyung?" Jimin asked with a too-playful smile while Yoongi sipped his drink.
"You have legs," the older responded.
"Yah! So does Val!" Jimin cried, indignant.
"Val is recuperating and shouldn't move too much." Yoongi got a great deal of satisfaction out of the smug smile you gave Jimin before sticking your tongue out at him childishly. Jimin rolled his eyes and leaned his body away from you.
Jimin hadn’t exactly made his mind up about you. When you’d first started dating Taehyung he had apathetically failed to form much of an opinion of you. He thought you were attractive, but he found most people attractive. Jimin enjoyed having sex and could find something charming enough about anyone to fuck them at least once. But that was clearly not going to happen since Taehyung was insistent on keeping you to himself, and Jimin was quite sure that sooner or later his lover would lose interest in you, so there was no need to invest time into getting to know you. You were just a girl.
“She could at least share,” Jimin mumbled in Korean, earning a side eye of disapproval from Yoongi.
Considering his relationship with Taehyung, maybe he should have been jealous of you, but that wasn’t who Jimin was. Jimin wasn’t in love with anyone other than himself. Even as inseparable as he was with Taehyung, he couldn't say really say that was love. He liked Taehyung and had a sense of loyalty to him, but those things did not add up to love in Jimin’s mind. If Taehyung wanted to buckle down and make his life about some girl, that was his prerogative. It didn’t threaten Jimin one bit. And, of course, he cared about the well being of the members of Bangtan--they were like family to him. But love? Jimin has never been so sentimental.
And you? Well, even with you and Taehyung unattached, it seemed you would be staying around in Jimin’s life for quite some time, but he still didn’t know what to think about you. He did care about Taehyung’s feelings enough to be upset when you first broke the man’s heart, but Jimin had the keen ability to be objective about nearly everything, so he knew you had meaningful reasons to push the man away, and he couldn’t blame you for them. Still, Jimin did care about Bangtan, and he did worry about the threat you posed to them and his own status.
You grabbed the popcorn and scooted closer to Jimin, nudging him with your elbow, “Pobrecito, don’t worry, we can share.”
Yoongi whipped his head toward you in disbelief and then looked to see the smirk pull at Jimin’s lips. “Val, did you just–”
Jimin eyed you suspiciously as he grabbed a handful of popcorn. There’s no way you could have picked up Korean after binging a few episodes and you’ve only been with Bangtan for a week tops.
Jimin decided to test your Korean, keeping his eyes carefully to the screen so as not to alert you to his careful calculations. You had been around such a blend of languages lately, maybe you wouldn’t notice. “Do you like sweets?” he asked, slow and clear so you might understand.
“If they’re Mexican,” you said in English, apparently not registering the Korean. “Nothing can beat a good tres leches.”
“Aye, do you guys always talk this much when you watch TV?” You chastised. Yoongi laughed and settled comfortably on the couch. No matter how impressed he was with you already, you kept finding ways to endear him even more. And truth be told, no matter how many skills you possessed or languages you knew, the thing that warmed his heart most was listening to you happily munch on some popcorn and gasp when the villain turned out to be the hero’s brother.
Tumblr media
After a few days of rest, Yoongi and Jimin had gotten you through several of their favorite shows. You had stayed up late with Yoongi to finish Sky Castle, which had made his normal late night much more enjoyable, but left you with nothing much to excite you for the next day. You had never been in the habit of sleeping late, usually woken up by the sun, especially in the summer, when it rose so early. You went out to the pool to see if you could bother Jungkook for a bit, but he was unusually absent. So you settled for wandering aimlessly around the first floor of the house, examining with your ignorant eyes every piece of art that Namjoon had meticulously curated.
After a few minutes you were perfectly convinced you did not and never would understand art. Surely everything Namjoon collected was not only expensive but also of the highest quality—at least to the type of people who were able to judge those things—but whatever meaning they had appeared utterly lost on you. Standing in front of a large canvas painted with two broad strokes of differing tones of blue, all you could think of was the way the dark ocean met the clean blue sky at the distant horizon in your native Veracruz. Memories void of any faces or events but full of the sounds of children playing and waves lapping the sand, the warm sun on your bare, smooth back, salt water tacky on your skin and the rough sand between your toes.
"What do you think?" Namjoon asked from beside you, making you jump and throw your hand up in front of you defensively.
"I don't think anything. I don't know anything about this stuff," you mumbled, embarrassed by your ignorance.
Namjoon tilted his head to the side and glanced down at you. "You don't have to know anything about art to have thoughts about it," he reasoned.
You smiled ironically at him. "I don't have any thoughts about anything, Namjoon."
"If only that were true, right?" He took a breath and stood firmly next you, as if he wouldn't move until you told him exactly what you thought. "Do you like it?"
You shrugged and frowned slightly. "The colors are pretty."
"Yes, they are. What were you thinking about while you were standing here?"
You looked back at the painting briefly before looking down.
"Nothing."
"You were standing here for at least three minutes, you must have thought of something."
You smirked at him and it almost made him smile. "You were watching me for three minutes?"
"At least."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to know what you were thinking."
"Don't you know I've had many blows to the head. Not many thoughts up here."
Namjoon sighed, somehow affectionately. "Come on, Val, humor me. Tell me you hate it. I won't care."
"It's stupid," you groaned. But Namjoon merely lifted his eyebrows patiently. "Fine. I was thinking about the ocean."
Namjoon hummed. "Which ocean?"
"The gulf, in my hometown."
"In Veracruz?" You merely nodded. "That's not stupid," he told you with a shake of his head. His mouth opened as if he were about to ask another question, but his attention was diverted when the front door opened.
"We should have called," Hoseok said quietly as he gently closed the front door.
"Namjoon, is awake by now. He's probably in his office," Seokjin replied, not having noticed you in the hallway to the side.
"I'm right here. You're early. Is everything okay?" Namjoon announced himself and you followed him into the foyer. Both men's eyes fell on you and you couldn't seem to help giving them a smile.
"Everything is fine. I just wanted to discuss some changes to tonight's plan with you." Although Seokjin clearly addressed Namjoon, he hadn't stopped looking at you. "Good morning, Val," he added with a nod of his head and a smile.
You bowed to him more deeply. "Good morning, ahjussi," you smiled. When you looked back up at him, his smile was gone, Hoseok was laughing and Namjoon had clamped a hand over his mouth. The oldest man made a high, indignant sound and puffed his chest with a deep breath. Then he deflated a little. Squinting his eyes and pointing a finger at you, he lowly responded, "Jungkook taught you that, didn't he?"
You shrank in on yourself slightly and gulped. "Yes."
Hoseok continued to laugh.
"What did I say?" You cried to him. You'd gathered that it was a term for a man older than you, which Jin was, but obviously Jungkook had left out some crucial nuance.
"You…called him…old," Hoseok replied between hiccupping laughs.
"No, I didn't!" You swore innocently.
"That little brat." Seokjin's neck and ears had turned bright red.
"I didn't mean it!"
Namjoon found your chagrin endearing and took pity on you. His large, warm hand rested reassuringly on your shoulder as he told you, "he meant Jungkook, not you. Just…if Kook teaches you any words, you should probably check with Yoongi before you say them to anyone else."
"Okay," you pouted. "I didn't mean to call you old. I don't even know how old you are."
"And you don't need to know. Not that old. Sunbaenim is just fine," he told you irritably. You nodded at the familiar phrase.
"Got it, sunbaenim."
Hoseok, it appeared, hadn't gotten his giggles out.
"Let's go into my office," Namjoon told the elder as the last of the tension diffused around you.
Hoseok looked between you, Namjoon and Jin for a moment before the leader settled his mind and gave him a nod.
Seokjin seemed to agree. "I don't need you in here. Entertain the child," he teased.
It was your turn to make a squeak of protest, but you figured it was fair and said nothing as the two men walked toward Namjoon's office. Hoseok turned to you and smiled, but said nothing. The silence grew increasingly awkward the longer you stood there.
"Where have you been the last few days?" You asked finally. You hadn't seen him since the dinner you had several nights ago.
"I've been busy with business."
"And your business doesn't bring you here?"
Hoseok shook his head. "Not always."
"Oh." You frowned and scuffed your toe on the tile.
"Why? Did you miss me?"
"No!" You replied too quickly. "With everyone in this house? How could I?" You went quiet but he didn't answer. "I thought maybe you were avoiding me," you admitted to the floor.
"I'm not." But his voice wasn't convincing. You could hear the apology coming before the words left his mouth. "I'm sorry for the other day."
"It wasn't your fault."
Hoseok's breath caught in his throat when he realized you thought he was apologizing for you getting taken again. "I–it–I was apologizing for the kiss," he finally managed.
"The…oh." In the fog of that day you'd almost forgotten about it. You just knew from others that Hoseok had been blaming himself for something that couldn't be his fault. The kiss almost didn't register for you, although now it seemed you could recall it perfectly and your cheeks showed it.
"I shouldn't have done that, without your permission, and I'm sorry."
"I think you already apologized and got yelled at by Namjoon." You tried to smile at the awkward moment. You didn't mind, even now thinking back on it, but it was as unexpected now in your memories as it was then.
"Namjoon is very big on consent, and that's right. I just…couldn't help myself."
"It's okay-"
Tumblr media
"No. It isn't. And Namjoon said I can't come over unless it's for business until I learn my manners."
You smiled, and bumped your shoulder against Hoseok's, not saying anything but hopefully conveying that you two were really okay. The thing you wouldn't admit...couldn't admit, was that you had missed Hoseok. And Seokjin, too. And that didn't make any sense to you. It didn't make sense that all the members of Bangtan, all these relative strangers, despite their kindness and hospitality, gave you butterflies when you thought of them. Even Tae, in the way he wasn't around, was showing you kindness and respect that didn't make sense to you. For the first time, you were just existing, in a space, without expectation...and it just, it didn't make sense.
Before you got too lost in your thoughts, you turned to Hoseok, "Want to watch some dramas with me?"
His heart-shape smile gave you those butterflies again, "Absolutely."

It's White House Day
and BTS is joining Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at today's Press Briefing, which starts at 2:30 ET:
And there's one link. Here's another:
And in about an hour we'll have concept photos again (OMG) - but as happy as I am about those, I'm more excited to hear what our guys have to say - and even though the Oval Office meeting is closed to the press, BTS (read: Our President Kim Namjoon mostly) will be giving some remarks in the press briefing as well and you know what that means. THE JEON PARKS WILL BE THERE AND STALKERS WILL NOT. Getting inside the press room is not for the faint of heart, and doubtless some journalists are ARMY but not all ARMY are credentialed journalists with White House okay sooooo...
Tumblr media
Safety first, kids. And Namjoon is much... broader, these days. I need a new Presidential edit. Someone screenshot me some stuff. I'm not gonna be able to watch, as I have some rather invasive treatment crap going on that requires my full attention at that time -- but I'll be home this evening and hopefully able to tell y'all how great the guys did because SURELY it'll be on Youtube so President Biden can get a bunch of likes. We hope. I know they're gonna do wonderfully. I'm excited for BTS. I hope Jungkook isn't still mad and Jimin is happy and stamps got collected and everyone is all good and everyone remembers their English. BUT WHAT IF BTS CURSES IN THE PRESS BRIEFING WHAT IF YOONGI SAYS "WHAT Y'ALL THINK WOULD HAPPEN WHEN BANGTAN RISES, MUTHAFUKKAS" AND THE BEAT DROPS AND JIMIN FLIPS AND JUNGKOOK STARTS RAPPING AND NAMJOON TEARS HIS SHIRT OFF

Welcome
Hello everyone. I appreciate the nice words from you all in my asks and inbox.
Tumblr media
I know a lot of you are new to BTS and I can totally relate to all the confusion when you are just trying to figure out what’s going on, what’s gone on and why do they do that and what were they thinking?? (haha).
Please feel free to ask anything, use the anonymous feature, no question is a dumb question, there are probably a lot of people who have no idea what this or that is, whatever your question might be. I will absolutely do my best to answer to the best of my knowledge, though I am by far no expert.
And for those DIYers who want to figure it out yourself, here are a few resources to help:
The BTS Lexicon. This is just one of several fan-based websites that serves as a glossary of all that is Bangtan.
US BTS ARMY is the United States based BTS fan base website and has a lot of different information.
TheRiseOfBangtan YouTube channel. Describes as “This is the official Youtube channel for the fan-made documentary series ‘The Rise of Bangtan.’”
And of course:
BANGTAN TV the official BTS YouTube channel.
BTS_twt the official Twitter account of BTS that the members will sometimes post to themselves.
BTS Weverse official Army membership website and its sister site: Weverse Shop. You can find shows to purchase that they’ve produced: Run BTS, In the Soop, Bon Voyage, etc. as well as Weverse Magazine (the magazine is a website and is free).
V Live the official BTS platform for live broadcasts and their variety show Run BTS.
Just to make it clear, I am Jimin and Jungkook biased and a supporter of their relationship/friendship/bond/snoogie honey bunches of love thing they got goin’ on. But I also love all 7 and love to see them back together doing anything.
Peace out!

BUSINESS
Photography Lab Shop (camera repairs and film developing)
Person A goes to a film shop to get some unique photos developed, thinking that it just went straight through a computer and nobody would see them. Unlucky for them, Person B, a worker at the photo lab, has to look at them in order to process them. Let's just say that they get to know Person A very well through these photos.
Fashion Designer
Person A is a successful stylist for one of the major fashion magazines of the world. Through their experience they have been able to see the world. Person B is a recently graduated college student with a degree in Fashion Design. Desperately trying to fulfill their dream, Person B does whatever possible to land a job working for Person A. Apparently real life is messy. Really messy.
Hotel Owner
Person A runs a hotel in a small town that is only busy during the holidays. In the off season, where travelers are few, it is a struggle to stay afloat. Person B is on the hunt for a change after running away from their wedding minutes before walking down the aisle. In need of a place to stay, Person B claims Person A’s hotel a safe haven. At least for as long as you can bare the silence and lack of human life.
Tech
Person A is the newest big-shot game developer, the fate of the industry resting on their shoulders. However, their sky-high success is disrupted by person B, the newest tech and gaming rising star, threatening their precious reputation of fame in the industry. Will the two become rivals for good, or will they possibly develop the best thing yet?
WORLD
Dystopian AU
Person A is on the run from the law after stealing jewelry from the officials living peacefully in luxury. One of the very few perks of being outside of the system is thriving in the underground markets. One problem is that even the underground isn’t safe from people like Person B, the very one in charge of finding you. Turns out, its difficult hiding from the person who knows you better than anyone.
Royalty AU
The throne holds a responsibility that no heir wants to experience, least of all Person A. Having been trained since birth to fill the role as ruler, Person A dreads the day that is to come. However, another pressing matter arises - Person B. Person B is under oath to serve the royals but perhaps it went farther than it should have when love stepped into the picture. Can Person A forfeit their throne to be happy? Will Person B allow them to make that choice?
Soulmate AU
Everyone is born with a timer that begins the moment you meet your soulmate. For some it can be devastating waiting for who knows how long. Person A is one of those people who feels that time is moving incredibly slow. Person B is someone who has given up on caring for what appears on that watch. In a search for the near impossible, Person A does whatever it takes to find Person B.
Travel AU
Person A is desperately searching for new places to explore. Person B is complacent and desires to stay in the same small world they have built. Two unlikely characters with an unlikely chance of meeting. That is, until Person A makes a bold decision to make an offer online for someone to be their travel companion. Person B begrudgingly decides now is the time to try to see what everyone else seems to adore.
LIFESTYLE
Advice
Person A works at the local paper in town as an advice columnist on any and all topics (that they can handle). As a fairly small town where almost everyone knows everyone, Person B does their best to send in the most ridiculous questions to be an extra pain without giving away their identity. Person A struggles to find joy in the job with such a ridiculous load until it is discovered who is behind all the stress.
Fashion
Person A has started a fashion podcast on campus in which they discuss the latest in fashion and the most affordable options for those broke college students. A rival podcast is soon started by the less than friendly Person B, in which they do the same thing but with expensive options instead. This wouldn’t be a problem had not Person B been the Student Government Vice President.
Relationships
Person A claims to be a brilliant matchmaker responsible for the success of numerous relationships. However, they have never experienced a long term relationship of their own. So, with a horrible idea planted and a fairly successful blog, Person A coerces Person B to go on “fake dates” to scope out the latest and greatest in dating. What happens along the way is completely documented....for the most part.
Home & Garden
Person A and Person B are newlyweds who happen to be recently graduated college students with little to no money and a fixer upper of a home. With majors in videography and biology (things unrelated to renovating) the two of them set off to create a perfect home while documenting the process. Unfortunately, life gets in the way and complicates things. Nonetheless, Person A and Person B put to use whatever knowledge they have.
EDUCATION (college au edition)
Journalism Major
It’s basketball season for the universities, and with that Person A is tasked as the senior writer on the sports section of their university newspaper to watch all the basketball games of their schools team, and to interview their top all-star player, Person B. However, this may prove to be more than difficult when Person A and Person B have hated each other for years. With no one else taking the job, Person A must proceed.
Fine Arts Major
Everyone dreams of having their finished work placed in a museum, especially if that said museum is visited by thousands upon thousands of people. Person A is given the opportunity during the final semester to work alongside those at the exhibition to showcase their work. Unfortunately, Person B is a stubborn art critic who isn’t keen on having just anyone’s work on their walls. This forms an undesirable stress that you refuse to back down on, even if it’s for the sake of a class.
Dance Major
Person A’s focus and strong suit was contemporary. The interest in trying anything else was limited...until forced by the professor for a project that required them to be paired with a dancer of a different style. Person B was your assigned partner who was passionate about Hip Hop. With Person B’s persistence and Person B’s stubbornness, perhaps a great result is to come.
STEM Major
All of those memes and jokes about STEM majors are accurate...the lack of sleep and a life is a true struggle. Person A is a teacher’s assistant with a full load of classes for an engineering degree. They strive to be of great help to any of the students who ask. Unlike the other TA, Person B, they give it their all. Person B, however, is less inclined to be as helpful as Person A is. After several late nights of going over papers for the class, Person A comes to learn a few things about Person B.

T H E T A K E O V E R - Chapter 1 (Tension)
Tumblr media
The recruits of Bangtan Academy were trained to be super soldiers, to be the strongest, fastest, most cunning fighters in the world, now they are being put to the test! You were at the bottom of your class, but you noticed the cracks in the system first, what are you going to do? Run or try to save the world?
BTS Apocalypse Dystopian Invasion AU. Mystery Thriller. BTS member(s?) x reader
Warnings: military, guns, torture
Hi, here's a little in between chapter for you! Chapter theme: tension, and also you and Namjoon sitting in a tree, k i s s i n g.
Word count: 3.6k
---
Military aircraft after military aircraft land in the grassy plains surrounding your school. Large booming noises signal their approach as they land. Helicopters whirling turbines chop through the sky.
And then soldier after soldier descends out of the cabins, dressed from head to toe in black and carrying large weapons. The soldiers fill the compound, and then start advancing to your school.
---
Your class watches the chaos unfold outside, faces glued to the gymnasium’s windows. Shouldn’t we be doing something? And where the hell is Namjoon? you think. You still can’t find him anywhere!
You start to move to the spot where your drill instructor stands, but the gymnasium doors’ burst open.
Soldiers fill the empty space, guns drawn.
Your class turns around, hands up.
You do the same, you’re scared, but you’ve been trained in these types of situations. You don’t scream in fright or try to run away or fight them. You wait obediently, you were all on the same team after all.
Red lasers pointing at every chest, a dot centered on yours, you wonder why the soldiers are acting like this, but they have to have a good reason, they're simply following orders.
The soldiers quickly move your class into the gymnasium’s locker room. A line of large military men push and shove your class inside, even your drill instructor. Was this a command from even higher officials?
You’re cold and wet and confused along with the rest of your class, but you stay silent. The only noises in the halls come from yells amongst the occupying soldiers and the chirping of beeps on each soldier's vest radio. You keep quiet and remember your training...observe, assess, strategize, negotiate, and then…
None of this makes sense! Your class stays locked inside, abandoned by the soldiers now that you were caged in. Some classmates step on benches to peer through the frosted locker room windows, watching as military vehicles move around campus. Some go to their lockers. You didn’t have such a luxury, as this was the men’s locker room, so you have to endure sitting in your wet swimsuit hoping the temperature will eventually rise.
A pair of hands pinch your sides. “Namjoon!” you hiss, pulling him into an empty row. “Where the fuck were you?!”
“What are you talking about?”
“Don’t,” you glare. He’s being secretive and you don’t like it. “I know you went somewhere.”
“You noticed?” He admits, “Looking out for me?” His expression changes and he presses his body closer to yours, knocking your back into a locker. The noise has you both looking around, quickly moving to another location.
Hidden again, you spin around to face Namjoon. “What the hell is going on?”
“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out,” he says, “Stay here.”
You grab his arm. “Don’t leave me alone,” you whisper.
“Stay low, don’t make yourself stand out, until I come back. Can you do that for at least a couple of hours?” He pats your head and you shove him away, only half serious in your anger.
He’s doing that thing he does when he’s working on a plan, eyes scanning the room, lost in thought, not really there with you. You sigh, resigning yourself to putting your trust in him. Namjoon has never lied to you before, and he’s second in class for a reason.
You huff, “Yes...”
---
He lied.
The sun was setting and Namjoon had yet to return.
This is annoying. Why won’t anyone say what’s going on?! Not even your instructor has said a word as he stands guard at the entrance, remaining impassive.
You busy yourself by trying to break into lockers, searching for something to wear over your damp swimsuit. With your ear pressed against a locker door you slowly turn the dial until you hear a click. You smile to yourself, whirling it in the opposite direction.
“What are you doing to my locker?”
You close the door immediately after opening it. “Oh, this is the MEN'S locker room…I forgot?”
“Yeah sure. You’re going to have to explain.” Your classmate places his arms on either side of your head, trapping you against the metal doors. Your face goes hot at his close proximity, and you quickly duck underneath his outstretched arm, jumping away from him.
“I was just looking for some clothes to change into, okay? it doesn’t look like they want to let us out any time soon.” You turn to escape but he grabs your hand to stop you. His expression softens.
“Sorry, I only have one set of clothes, I can give you my shirt. I’ll ask my friends if they have an extra pair of pants.”
You turn your body to the side and lean your head on the adjoining locker, watching as your classmate reopens his locker and pulls out a duffle bag. Jeon Jungkook, the top student in your class; he’s fast, strong, and excels at strategy and combat, along with pretty much everything else.
You couldn’t hate him even if you wanted to, someone with the most coveted top spot would most certainly have haters, but Jungkook was a kind soul who charmed his teachers and fellow classmates, loved by the whole academy.
You never really talked to him. What would the top student and bottom in class have in common anyways? If he wasn’t receiving another award, standing in the spotlight, you mostly pretended he didn’t exist, but now, you can’t help but stare at the contour of his muscles through his under armour. He’s cute, very cute. Of course he is, he's Bangtan Academy’s golden recruit. Jungkook gives you his black shirt, which you gratefully pull over your head.
“Are you hungry?” Jungkook hands you a cereal bar. Cute and sweet, and very out of your league.
“Oh, thank you.”
“What do you think is going on?”
“I have no idea, maybe some kind of attack? We are close to the border.”
“Did you see how they looked at us?” You did notice, their cold expressions as they pointed their guns at you to move. Anger, no, it looked like fear.
“Did you want to come with me to meet my friends?”
You shake your head. “I’m looking for someone.”
“Right,” he pauses. “I haven’t seen Joon since this morning.”
You cross your arms over your chest, playing dumb. “Who?”
Jungkook looks at you knowingly, smiling. “You know...Joon is one of my best friends.”
“If he’s your best friend then why don’t you know where he is?” you snap.
“I thought you weren’t looking for him.”
You clamp your mouth shut and narrow your eyes at him. He’s cute, sweet and annoying, you think. “Gotta go,” you gesture a half-hearted salute and turn to leave.
“Wait!” Jungkook grabs your arm, but you’re annoyed and tired of waiting. If Namjoon was going to lie then you didn’t need to keep your promise either, you were going to find out what’s going on yourself! And the last thing you need is his friends getting in the way, especially someone as conspicuous as Jeon Jungkook. So you don’t feel bad when you grip Jungkook's forearm and press down on the muscle. He releases you as you pull your arm back, aiming for his jaw.
But Jungkook is faster than you. He’s faster than everyone, and has you in a chokehold before you know what hit you.
“Jeez, I didn’t mean to make you mad. Stop fighting,” he grunts, finding it difficult to hold you still.
Easy for him to say, when his windpipe isn’t being crushed. Luckily, you could hold your breath for a really long time, remember? So, either you were going to pass out or one of your kicks was going to hurt Jungkook enough for him to let you go.
“What’s going on?”
Or perhaps there was a third option. “Ji-min,” you wheeze.
Jimin rushes forward, Jungkook loosens his hold, and you elbow him hard, shoving Jimin out of your way as you run back to the entrance.
You walk through the crowd, away from the pair and towards your objective. They surely wouldn’t follow you, right? You glance back and don’t see anyone. No, of course not, why would they? You’re not even on their radar, two top students like Jungkook and Jimin, and you, practically an outcast. You scan the locker room one last time, hoping to see your big dumb idiot friend, tell him off for talking about you to Jungkook, What had the been talking about? Making fun of you, probably, but the second in the class is nowhere.
You keep moving calmly, silently steaming with anger inside at Namjoon for making you worry about him.
You know the showers are in the back of the locker room, connected to the bathrooms without a door, and through the bathrooms, you can make it to a hallway and into the girls locker room, or even outside of the building!
You quietly pass through the showers and to the door leading to the connecting hallway, listening to the beeps of radio outside. There must be soldiers standing guard somewhere close...
You open the door slightly, peering down the hall. You can see as far as the main entrance, where they set up what looks like a...decontamination box? What? That can’t be right, but that’s what it looks like. A line of soldiers outside are slowly making their way into your school, through the box, their uniforms sprayed down with chemicals, walking single file down The Academy’s halls, and towards your dorms, where you lived. An uneasy feeling settles in the pit of your stomach. What is going on?
A man grabs you, “How did you get here?”
You push him off you, and when he grabs you by the throat, you slam your arm down into his bicep, punch him in the stomach and in the nose. It was a reflex, after years of taking defense classes. You might have been much smaller than him, but it seemed like you were quicker. As long as he didn’t land a solid hit you could easily take him down!
And you did, letting him fall onto the ground at your feet. You felt sorry for him, but you had no time to offer your apologies. Not now, not when others noticed the scuffle and were closing in on you.
You run through the halls and straight into another soldier, bounce off his gear and fall to the ground.
“Err, welcome to Bangtan Academy?” You place your hands up in surrender covering your eyes as six rifles are pointed at your head. Fuck you, Namjoon.
---
“You! What the hell do you think you're doing, cadet?! Do you think because you’re the headmaster's daughter you can-” It’s always the same shit. For years, your teachers would throw the fact that your father was the headmaster right in your face. Why weren’t you faster, stronger, smarter? You were the headmaster’s daughter, weren’t you? What’s the matter with you? If you failed a test, classmates made fun of you, if you aced a test, they assumed it was favoritism.
“Are you listening to me, cadet?! Do you think you run the school!?” You wish they could be at least a little creative in their insults, you lost count at how many times you've heard that phrase before.
You inwardly groan, you hated being the center of attention, and right now everyone was watching you get chewed out. “-NOW GET BACK IN LINE SOLDIER. I’LL KNOW IF YOU STEP ONE TOE OUT-.”
“Uh-huh, you didn’t notice Namjoon was missing either.” Oh shit, why couldn’t you just keep your big mouth shut?
The soldiers call for backup on their radio remotes, and just like that, they are leading your drill instructor away with them, locking the door behind them. You feel a special kind of satisfaction watching him leave confused, but now Namjoon was in trouble too, fuck.
You find Jungkook who doesn’t seem to be phased by your earlier violent reaction. Good, because you weren’t going to apologize. You tell him if he finds you pants you’ll let him know what you saw.
“Why are they going into our dorm rooms?!” Jung Hoseok, third in your class and owner of said pants, whispers.
You sigh. “I don’t know, but I think Bangtan Academy is being taken over...” So where does that leave the rest of you? Where is Namjoon?
---
The sun set hours ago, replaced by the moon high above the sky. You and your classmates haven’t eaten, haven’t been told what’s going on, and you haven’t tried to escape again, resigning yourself to sitting in a corner, trying to send short messages to Namjoon - ambivalent texts in case anyone was monitoring your phone lines - who continues to ignore you. You clench your fists, he’s leaving you on read, at a time like this?!
Eventually soldiers move your class along with the rest of the academy to an old wing of the school. This hall was where they put old equipment and outdated computers, broken and left to collect dust. You felt like one of those ancient machines, used up and discarded. It just didn’t make any sense, sure you and the rest of the students lacked experience, but you all were stronger, more capable, and studied all the latest experimental military tactics. ‘We can help! Why aren’t they utilizing us?’
You can’t sleep. Students made makeshift beds out of old gym mats and curtains. You try to sleep, you try, you really try. You check your phone one last time, still awake, listening to your classmates snore, remembering him…
-
“This is disgusting.”
“It’s moonshine.”
“Kim Namjoon, you did not just let me drink this sewer water you and your friends concocted.”
“Hey! Hobi made it. He’s a genius when it comes to chemistry. It’s good!”
“It tastes like battery acid,” you grimace, taking another sip.
Namjook tsks, “So dramatic, I’ll just take it back then.”
You would shove him if you weren’t both sitting high above the ground, hidden in one of the school’s Gingkos. So you glare at him instead. You sit on a branch together, he says it’s so he can make sure you don’t fall, but you knew out of the two of you, your sense of balance was exceptional, and his, well, it was good if you didn’t count the times he managed to trip over his own feet.
“We should go back down, lunch is almost over.” You raise yourself up standing, arms stretched out gripping a higher branch as you move the length of the bough.
“You know, you should come sit with me and my friends for lunch,” Namjoon says. You hum, walking back and forth along the branch. He stands up too, leaning against the trunk. “Come here.”
“It’s better for your reputation if we don’t.”
“I don’t care about things like that.”
“You should care if you want first in class.”
“Maybe I don’t want it.”
You flick him in the forehead, leaning against him. “Don’t say that. I wish I had that option.” You look up, into his eyes, noticing the way his jaw clenches. He’s tense. He looks down at you, contemplating his words, you already know what he’s going to say. You don’t want to hear it, placations and reassurances, that’s not what you want from him. You want Namjoon to kiss you instead.
Kissing Namjoon, getting lost in his rough affection, forgetting everything else, this was easier than talking things out and bringing up each other’s pasts. He already knew yours, and you already knew his. Exceptional at birth, scouted to represent the nation, never asked what he wanted, Namjoon was meant for greatness whether he liked it or not.
Greatness, greatness was something you had always wished for, because greatness meant adoration, respect, maybe even love. You wished for it desperately when you were young and hopeful, when you still wanted approval from your father. Now your dreams were all but reduced to whispers in your consciousness, panging reminders of the childhood you endured. Namjoon knew, he practically grew up at The Academy too, watched the shift in the way you regarded your father, so when you kissed him hard to silence whatever words he was going to speak, he kissed you back harder, and let you use him to forget.
---
You hear screaming. It’s loud enough to wake others. You immediately think of the worst. But no, those screams are higher pitched, too unlike Namjoon’s voice. You hear a familiar voice call out through the makeshift barracks, “Where’s Hoseok? Have you seen Hoseok?!”
---
The thing about these halls is you have walked them a thousand times. You know the connected alleyways, the rooms with broken locks, the windows that are easiest to open, and the ledges that can hold your weight.
You make it back to the main hall. Compared to the earlier bustling, the halls are empty, quiet, dark, ominous. So much has changed at Bangtan Academy already. The sun hasn’t hit the horizon yet, you can make it outside!
“Hey, where are you going?”
You keep your head down, keep walking, past the military vehicle that enters, and the guard that yells at you. Soldiers walk by you, but they don’t bother you, maybe they don’t know what's going on either, maybe they are too tired and have bigger problems to deal with. You walk quickly until you make it to the only road leading into The Academy.
The cars’ engines startle you as you walk alongside the highway. The retreating screeching sounds reminds you of the screaming, who could it have been? Not Namjoon, and you hoped it wasn’t Jung Hoseok either. Hoseok was a genuine person, and you appreciated genuine. You still felt guilty for wishing it had been the torment of another, no one deserves the kind of pain that such a horrible scream could produce.
You didn’t have a plan, planning was Joon’s thing, but you did have years of instinct and intuitiveness that saved you on multiple occasions from getting caught and punished by teachers, and now your intuition was telling you to run.
You take out your phone, pull up Namjoon’s number. You don’t have a pen or pencil, and you’ve never been good at memorization. But this time you have to, you must remember the ten numbers as if your life depended on it, because you’re starting to feel like it might. After reciting the numbers over and over in your head like a song, you’re confident enough to continue. You turn off your phone and chuck it in the bushes.
You walk on the road with the song in your head. The sun rises and you sing, the clouds move through the sky and you sing. The sun starts to set again and you sing.
A gas station comes into sight. You would find it strange how so many cars are lined up to get gas, but you’re starting to realize strange is something that is going to keep happening.
You make it inside the gas station, walking towards a frantic attendant with a line of people. “Psst hey, can I borrow a pen?” He throws a pen at you while helping the next angry customer.
You can feel the tense nervous energy around you. You take the pen and write the numbers large on your forearm, praying you remembered it right.
You walk through the aisles. It’s so busy, no one will notice if you swipe a couple of things. Some chips, candy bars, granola bars, a large bottle of water. You managed to find a fanny pack and a phone. You drink the water while you fill the fanny pack with food, and then hide it on a shelf behind groceries.
You wait in line, behind a mom and her son. Her purse is draped over her shoulder, she’s paying attention to her child as he whines for candy. She won’t miss a couple of bills.
“Can I have a prepaid phone card?” You smile at the overworked cashier as he rings you up. You want to ask him what’s going on, but the large line makes you decide against it. Taking your purchase, you make your way out of the store, but not before throwing the fanny pack and water bottle in your plastic bag as well.
---
“Please pick up, please please please.”
Namjoon doesn’t pick up.
You grip the phone in your hand and try to not let your anger rise. You send him a text, “It’s y/n, pick up idiot!”
You call again and on the first ring he answers.
“Oh my god, fucking finally, what the fuck Joon?”
“Where are you-”
“Where have you been?! What the hell is going on-did you find anything out? They took our rooms, and all these strange things are happening and-”
“Cadent y/l/n tell me where you are right now.”
Why does he sound like that? He doesn’t greet you with the affection you’re used to, his tone is harsh. It reminds you of your father.
“No.”
“You need to tell me now.”
“You tell me where you are.”
“I’m at the school. You need to come back right now.” His voice sounds calm but there is pain underneath his tone.
“No, I won’t.”
“Then I’ll go to you. Give me your location.” You hold the phone closer to your ear, you can hear low whispers in the background.
Your heart beats wildly. He’s your best friend, but something inside you says to run.
“No. Joon, I’m scared, please tell me you’re okay.” You confess to your friend, the seconds tick by and you wonder what kind of trap this is. You can’t stay on the phone any longer, they might be tracking your location.
The line stays silent, and then, “Your father wants to speak to you.”
“Goodbye.” You break the phone and run.

Uh-oh, who do you think was screaming? Let me know your theories <3

please i wanna know all about the rise of bangtan drama 👀😂
LMAOOOOO ok twitter follower
let me preface this by saying i did not know this youtube series existed before i started seeing tweets about it, so clearly the “documentary” in question is simply NOT apart of the universal army experience that a lot of people are making it out to be. i have never even seen these videos pop up in my recommended on youtube…so there’s that 🥴
BUT ANYWAY, i guess after bts announced they’d be coming out with a new docuseries with disney+ about their career, the editor of this completely FAN MADE youtube series made these really odd tweets implying that their work felt threatened by the prospect of a new official documentary from bts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
come to find out that their series is literally made by compiling clips of official bts content including their ALREADY EXISTING docs, movies, youtube content, interviews, etc.
….so as delicately as possible and without trying to dismiss her work (because content creating as a FAN is very time consuming), the amount of views and acclaim she’s received on these “episodes” she’s made have clearly gone to her head. even more bizzare, a lot of people who like her videos are behaving as though hybe and bts owe her some kind of recognition or credit because she “did it first” …but she owns literally none of the footage she uses, so they’re completely forgetting that if none of the content she recycles clips of in her series existed, she wouldn’t have a series at all because that’s literally all her source material lmao. all it would take is a couple copyright strikes on her videos to get it all taken down, that’s what’s so baffling to me.
she deleted those tweets and made a couple threads on her personal account trying to explain that she thought she was helping bts with her series because it’s “from an army perspective” but like…they certainly didn’t ask her to do that, so her place as a fan needs to be clearer. she essentially makes long fan edits and calls it a documentary series (someone even made an IMDB page for it and this thing is listed under all of the members’ individual profiles…i cannot) and people are praising her a little too much imo. i guess her series pushes some narratives that are questionable and her editing puts them in a kpop box and glosses over a lot of important issues surrounding bts in that industry, so i’m very confused why people are calling it a staple for new armys and how it helped them learn about bts when they could have just watched all the official content bts put out themselves if they needed a proper introduction. it makes no sense to me and it’s very alarming and also just. hilariously bizarre. i don’t condone the bullying but girl, respectfully, what the fuck. 😂

Part one Part two Part three Part four Part five Part seven Part eight Part nine Part ten (M) Part eleven Part twelve Part thirteen Part fourteen (M)
Tumblr media
You can only see a swirling mass of black and gray in front of you, the hues moving so fast it’s hard to get a grip on what’s happening. Your whole body feels heavy, and you find that it’s impossible to move no matter how hard you try to.
You try to call out for help, but no sound leaves your lips. There’s a sudden weight on your chest, the pressure knocking the air out of you as it grows heavier and heavier for each passing second. Your lungs are burning, and just as you think you can’t handle it anymore, your eyes snap open into the darkness of your room.
You take in a shuddering breath, your body hot and overheated. You can feel the hairs around your face clinging to your skin, and judging by your still racing heartbeat – you just had a nightmare. Although it’s much lighter than in your dream, you can still feel a pressure on your chest as you gulp down air. You peek down, breath getting caught in your throat as you find golden eyes staring right back at you.
Yoongi is lying down on your chest; tail flicking back and forth quickly behind him. The moment he realizes you’re awake, you feel his head bump against your skin, soft fur tickling your chin as he rubs his head back and forth. He doesn’t let up until you pet him in return, your fingers running down his back as you wait for your terrible feeling in your stomach to lessen up a bit.
The shrill sound of your alarm makes you jump, and Yoongi makes a low grumbling sound as you pick him up and place him down beside you on the bed. You curse under you breath as you realize you must’ve slept through the first two alarms. You’re running late, and you know your boss won’t take kindly to that.
You quickly snatch up some clothes from your closet and bring them to the bathroom; trying to clean up the best you can while not making yourself even more behind on time. You stumble into the kitchen still half-asleep, making sure to prepare breakfast for your Yoongi before you leave. You snatch up a few granola bars for yourself, hoping that it will be enough until lunchtime.
You’re about to run out the door when you pause, quickly turning back to the bedroom and peeking your head in through the door.
“Yoongi, I’m going to work now. See you later tonight!” You don’t hear any response, but you see something twitch in the darkness, and that will have to be good enough.
By the time you make it to the bus you’re wheezing, and it’s not until you’re halfway to work that it slows down enough for the morning to fully hit you. Yoongi must’ve realized you slept through the first alarms, and that’s why he had tried to wake you up. Resting your head against the cool window, you stare mindlessly at the passing stores and people. You try to reason with the fluttering in your stomach that he probably only woke you up to make sure he got food before you left, not because he was worried about you showing up late.
You sigh as you step off the bus, hurried steps carrying you into the high-rise building you work in. Your plan had been to talk to him before you left for work, but with how the morning played out, you suppose it will just have to wait until later. You can feel the tense atmosphere the moment you step out from the elevator and onto your floor, hushed whispers carrying through the hallway. You can’t see your boss anywhere, and so you barely manage to sneak into your seat unseen before you hear raised voices coming from an office.
“Thank god you’re here,” Jihyo shoots you a look over her computer.
“What’s going on?” You whisper back as you shrug off your coat. You see your other coworkers muttering quietly between themselves around the office with grim expressions on their faces.
“Some files had been breached yesterday,” You suck in a breath. This is really bad. Even if it’s an old case, it could put the hybrids involved severely at risk.
“Which ones?”
“I’m not sure, but I think one of them might be an older high-profile case,” You wince. This might get really bad for the company if the perpetrator isn’t found and punished for it. While your company is private, it’s still closely linked to the official sector in providing guidance and research for when they’re understaffed or need extra hands on a case. While you love your job and have never been in it for the money, you surely thought the pay would have been a little better based on the amount of work you do. But alas, you can't find it yourself to leave either.
You feel like your shoulders are touching your ears by the time it’s lunch. Your stomach has been growling on and off for the last hour, and it’s with pink cheeks that you and Jihyo hurry out of the building to find some food.
“So, how’s the kitty doing?” Jihyo asks as you walk down the street, carefully avoiding bumping into other people milling around. Coming from a smaller town, you don’t think you’ll ever quite get used to the hustle and bustle of living in such a large city.
“Oh uhm, Yoongi is doing okay,” You wince, quickly adverting your eyes down to the ground as you realize the name slipped out.
“Yoongi?” Jihyo’s eyes are burning into the side of your face.
“Oh, I did one of those .. name generators! Yeah, I used a name generator to find something to call him. It was totally random,” You laugh nervously.
“Okay,” Jihyo drags out the word, obviously not quite believing your little lie.
“Either way, do you mind if me and Sana stop by tonight to hang out a little? She has been nagging me to see you again, and you know I don’t mind hanging out with you one bit,” She bumps her hip into yours.
You’re about to nod when you remember why you absolutely can’t. Sana knows Yoongi is a hybrid, and you’re sure she won’t let it go if she comes over one more time. You feel bad for keeping it secret, but Yoongi was adamant about you keeping it for yourself, and you don’t want to say anything until you know what to do.
“No!” You blurt out, Jihyo sending you a weird look at the outburst.
“I mean, I think Yoongi was really shaken up last time and I think it would be best if she doesn’t come over for a while,” You give her a faint smile.
Jihyo stares at you for a second before she gives you a nod, a small sigh leaving her lips, “I guess you’re right. It’s probably not the best idea.”
You continue walking in a comfortable silence down the street, sparing a moment to admire the vibrant colours that have started to spread through the trees. It probably won’t be long until everything is painted permanently in yellows and red, and you’re definitely looking forward to it.
“How about I come visit you instead?” You offer as you step into a quaint cafe, mouth watering at the sugary smells that hits your nose.
“That’s a great idea!” Jihyo grins. “You can come home with me after work tomorrow!” You hope she doesn’t hear the soft sigh of relief that brushes past your lips.
“Sounds good,” You give her a grin of your own as you start picking out the pastries you want. Crisis adverted, for now.
It still takes your brain a while to catch up when you walk into the living room and find a very human Yoongi sprawled out over your couch. He’s wearing the same clothes as yesterday, but you have no idea just how long he’s actually been using it. Despite the lightness in your wallet, you decide you’ll need to go out and pick up some stuff for him soon.
You watch him for a second as he sleeps. His lips are parted in a soft pout and he has an arm thrown over his eyes, blocking out the setting sunlight through the windows. You would’ve figure he would have preferred to sleep on your bed while you were gone, but as you reach out a hand into a sliver of light, you can feel the warmth on your skin.
It’s obvious that he enjoys snuggling up in the sunlight in either form, and you hate to admit that you find it all kinds of adorable.
“Yoongi?” He doesn’t stir when you call out for him. You walk over to the couch, hesitantly laying your hand on his arm to make him wake up. You give it a little shake, and Yoongi grumbles in his sleep as he finally removes it. You see his eyes dilate much more than a normal human’s would when he opens them, a shift of gold passing through them as he blinks sleepily up at you.
“Oh, you’re home?” His voice is husky but soft, cheeks a little puffed out as he reaches up to scratch his ear.
“I just came back,” You resist the urge to coo at how endearing he looks. It doesn’t matter how cute Yoongi looks though, you still need to have the talk that’s been weighing on your mind for the whole day.
“Do you mind if we talk?” Yoongi watches you silently for a few seconds before he shifts on the couch, giving you room to sit down. You collapse against the pillows, reveling in how nice it feels on your back compared to the stiff office chairs.
“First of all, I’m not kicking you out,” You ignore the tiny voice that whispers not yet in the back of your mind. Yoongi tries to give you a disinterested look, but you can see the tension drain out of his shoulders at your words.
“But if you are going to keep living here, we’ll need some rules,” You tuck your knees up to your chest, picking at a loose thread. This is the part you’ve been dreading all day.
“Rules?” Yoongi’s tail flicks irritably, obviously not pleased at the direction the conversation’s going.
“Yes, rules. Just .. I don’t know, clean up after yourself. Let’s give each other some personal space. And tell me if there’s anything you need,” Yoongi tilts his head, the corner of his lips twitching.
“Those are rules?” He snickers. To be honest, you had no idea what you were going to say. You had hoped you would come up with something great, but this is why you never improvise anything. It doesn’t end well.
“Oh!” You suddenly remember the most important part, the rule he already broke yesterday.
“You have to sleep on the couch when I’m in bed.” Yoongi’s laughter stops abruptly.
“Why? It’s big enough for the both of us,” Yoongi glares at you, ears nearly hidden by his hair by how low they are against his head.
“What?! It’s not!” It really isn’t.
Your bed is only slightly bigger than a twin sized bed, and it’s definitely not big enough for you to sleep at a comfortable distance. The only way it would work would be if you were, well, cuddling. You shake off the mental image as soon as it arrives, but the idea is enough to make a pink flush rise in your cheeks.
“So you’re saying I can’t?” Yoongi asks again, a displeased frown on his lips when you shake your head.
“Yes Yoongi, you,” you gesture to the man in front of you, “can’t sleep on my bed when I’m in it. You can use it when I’m at work, but otherwise you’ll have to stay on the couch.” His ears suddenly perk up again; the low annoyed rumbling sound that was slowly building his chest disappearing completely.
“Fine,” He grumbles, but you notice the way his dark eyes seem to glimmer with the same mischief you’ve seen in videos, when cats purposefully knocks something off a table. You’re not sure you’re going to like whatever he’s thinking about.
“Oh right, before I forget! I’m heading back to Jihyo’s tomorrow after work. I won’t stay very long, but I wanted to let you know,” You smile gently.
You understand that he might not like the dog hybrid considering she did run into the apartment barking and snarling at him, but what you don’t understand is why his whole body stiffens up so much at the mention.
“Okay. I don’t care,” Yoongi snaps at you before you can ask, a harsh glare settling on your face. You feel yourself shrink from the look before you catch yourself. If Yoongi wants to be unfair and mean, then that’s on him, you’ve done nothing wrong.
It stings of course, when he’s so back and fourth and acts like he would much rather be anywhere else but here. But, you know there is more to it than that, so for now, you just bury down your hurt feelings and move on.
“Are you hungry?” You clear your throat at the awkward mood in the room.
The narrowing of Yoongi’s eyes tells you all you need to know, and you find yourself dishing up a quick dinner in no time.
You do make sure to make a little extra, putting it away in the fridge with a note explaining that he can have it for dinner tomorrow while you’re gone. He might be a little mean, but you’ll never let him go hungry if you can help it.
“Sana was so excited last night, she could barely sleep!” Jihyo laughs as you slip on your coat. You wrap one of your older scarves around your neck as you follow her outside. The edges are a little tattered, but it’s one of the softest scarfs you own, and you’re struggling to just throw it away.
“She’s so cute,” You grin.
Truth be told, you had considered cancelling tonight’s plans. Yoongi had been acting ever more distant yesterday after you told him you would be coming home late, and when you found him curled up on the couch this morning, you felt bad.
It’s obvious that he doesn’t like the dog hybrid, and you don’t want to push him away even more by meeting up with her. But at the same time – you want to be able to hang out with Sana and Jihyo, and you can’t just cut off the only friend you have because Yoongi got off on the wrong foot with them.
You quickly climb into the car that’s waiting for you, sinking into the expensive seats with a soft sigh. Your feet have been aching for days from all the extra walking, and getting to rest them for a little while is heavenly. Even though the break is nice, you can’t help but feel a little misplaced in Jihyo’s pricey car. The difference between you is staggering, and you always feel like someone will pop out of thin air and tell you off for enjoying something you obviously don’t have the money for.
Your eyes can’t help but grow little big every time you pull up to Jihyo’s house, the pristine white building probably more of a mansion than anything else. You can see something moving by the front door through the tinted windows, the car pulling to a stop in front of the stairs leading up to it.
The moment Jihyo steps out of the car, Sana is wrapped around her like a koala.
“You’re home!” She squeals, burying her face in Jihyo’s neck while your friend pats her back lovingly. You swallow down the lump in your throat, tearing your eyes away from the display of affection as you climb out of the car on the other side.
The moment you round the black vehicle Sana collects you into a tight hug too, tail wagging furiously behind her.
“I’m so glad you came to see me!” She rubs her head along your chin, the furry ears tickling your skin as she tries to bury down into your neck like she had with Jihyo. She whines when the scarf is the in way, and Jihyo playfully rolls her eyes at the hybrid’s pout when she pulls back.
“Come on girls, I’m starving,” Jihyo takes a step towards the house, and Sana quickly follows her, tugging you along.
The food is delicious, but of course, you didn’t expect anything less from the chefs Jihyo has working in her kitchen. You eat until you’re full and then some, the savory dishes better than anything you’ve had in months.
“I’ll have the them wrap some up so you can bring it home,” Jihyo hurries out of the dining room before you can protest.
Normally, you would refuse to bring home anything, but now .. Now you have another mouth to feed at home. You know Yoongi would love the chicken dish that even made your own mouth water, and you don’t have the heart to deny him that experience. Especially not since you know the fridge is starting to become awfully empty, and there’s still a week until your next paycheck. You feel awful for accepting the food, but you would also feel awful if you didn’t. Mostly, you just feel like you’ve .. failed.
“Do you wanna see my room?” Sana jumps up from her chair the moment you put down your fork, her fluffy ears standing up straight in excitement.
“Sure, I would love to,” You smile and Sana doesn’t waste any time before she grabs your hand, leading you up the stairs to the second floor.
You’ve been to Jihyo’s house many times before, but not after Sana moved in. You’re surprised when you see Sana leading you towards what used to be Jihyo’s art room, but as she pushes the door open, you can see that it has been converted into a beautiful bedroom instead.
“Sit here,” Sana steers you towards her bed, gesturing for you to move to the middle of it. It’s soft and bouncy, and you’re pretty sure your mattress at home would feel like rocks in comparison. The dog hybrid shuffles close, her knees knocking into yours as she sits crossed legged in front of you.
You see her nose twitch repeatedly, her eyebrows furrowing in concentration as she leans in closer.
“Is he still at your apartment?” Her normally soft voice sounds vaguely like a growl as she locks eyes with you.
“W-who?” You stutter. Of course, you know she means Yoongi, but you didn’t realize she would smell him on you. You didn’t even touch him yesterday!
“The cat – the hybrid,” She snarls, the hairs on her tail rising as she sniffs out the mixed scents.
“Yes, my cat is still at home. But he’s not a hybrid!” You honestly feel silly fighting with Sana when you both know he isone, but you promised Yoongi you wouldn’t expose him.
“We went out for lunch today, I probably bumped into a hybrid while we were out,” You pat her hand, trying to settle her growing uneasiness.
You can tell Sana doesn’t believe you, her keen scene of smell telling her otherwise, but you just need her to get off your back for a little while, just until you know what to do.
“There you are!” Jihyo enters the room just as Sana is about to say something, her lips falling shut with a cute pout at Jihyo’s interruption.
“Where did all your art supplies go?” You ask Jihyo as she climbs onto the bed too. Sana scoots over until she’s cuddled around her, arms around her waist and head resting on her shoulder. You ignore the upset glare Sana is giving you. You can’t really say anything to make it better without exposing yourself and Yoongi.
“Oh, my dad built me a little gallery out in the garden instead!” Jihyo rambles excitedly about her new supplies, and you try your best to follow along even though you don’t really understand much of what she’s talking about. You watch Sana look up at Jihyo with such open fondness that you almost feel like you’re intruding. It’s not hard to see that both of them are just as infatuated with each other as the other, and it makes your heart ache with want.
The whole reason you wanted a pet was to come home to someone who actually wanted you there – someone that would be excited to see you after a long day at work and give you some companionship. With Yoongi however, you’re not sure if you can even refer to him as an acquaintance. To think of him as a friend seems way too farfetched.
“- right?” Jihyo looks at you with a big grin, and you shake yourself out of the thoughts you got lost in.
“Right,” You confirm with a nod, desperately trying to figure out what you actually agreed on. Sana whines as you take Jihyo’s side, and it isn’t until five minutes later that you find out that you actually agreed with Jihyo that chasing squirrels isn’t a fun hobby.
The girls keep bickering for a while, and you resign to leaning back on the bed and watching them until they’re done. The atmosphere at Jihyo’s house just feels so lively compared to your own, and you hate that you don’t know how to make it better. You feel your smile slipping as you watch Sana cling to Jihyo, the hybrid using her puppy dog eyes to win argument.
You love spending time with your friends, but lately, all it seems to be doing is reminding you of what you don’t have, and what you can’t provide for the cat hybrid waiting for you at home.
You clear your throat; the guilt that’s building up in your stomach is making you feel a little sick. Jihyo and Sana stop their little play fight immediately, turning to you with big smiles.
“You guys, I think it’s time for me to go home. I’m still exhausted after Sunday,” It’s technically not a lie, you are tired, but you still feel bad for cutting the night so short.
“Of course! I’ll go get the food, I’ll meet you downstairs in a minute!” Jihyo calls over her shoulder as she hurries out of the room.
You feel a hand on your shoulder stop you as you’re about to follow her, Sana’s big eyes looking at you uncertainly.
“Are you okay?” Her nose twitches, and you see her ears flop down, “you smell sad.”
“I’m okay,” You reach up to pat her head, forcing through the best smile you can muster. You’re only being upset over things you can’t change, there’s no reason to make the hybrid feel bad because of it.
It’s still a little weird that certain predator hybrids can faintly smell your emotions, but you’ve encountered it enough through your work that it doesn’t throw you off too much when you’re reminded of it.
Sana frowns, shaking her head as she moves closer.
“You’re not. I’m gonna cuddle you until you feel better,” The dog hybrid wraps herself around you much like she did with Jihyo earlier, shoving her face into your neck and rubbing her head under your jaw. You chuckle as her breath tickles your neck, and although you feel like it’s probably more for her than it actually is for you, you still welcome the hug. You only extract yourself from her grasp when Jihyo calls out for you, Sana whining as she loses her cuddle buddy.
“I’ll see you soon okay?” You give her nose an affectionate bop.
“You better.”
.
Your arms are shaking as you finally make it inside your apartment, the bags of food Jihyo gave you weighing far more than you ever anticipated.
“You’re back,” You startle when you turn around and find Yoongi standing there, arms hanging loosely by his sides as he watches you. His voice sounds bored and disinterested, but the small twinkle in his eyes at your return gives him away. Maybe he is a little excited that you’re back after all.
“Help,” You grunt out as you try to slip off your shoes, trying your best to not fall over.
Yoongi takes a step forward to help you before he freezes, eyes narrowing in you as he inhales. His delicate features twists into disgust as he takes in the smell, his nostrils flaring as he glares at you.
“You stink,” He hisses as he quickly scoops the bags away from you, stalking into the kitchen before you can even make a sound. You feel a little dumbstruck by the interaction, leaning down to get a whiff of your coat and the sweater underneath it. You don’t smell anything out of the ordinary, but maybe you should change just in case.
You end up quickly changing into something else; joining Yoongi in the kitchen to help him put away the food you got from Jihyo. You can see that the food you prepared for him last night is gone, and you’re sure he must be hungry by now.
Yoongi shoots you another disgruntled look as you come up next to him, his tail flicking back and forth behind him. You focus on folding and putting away the bags you got the food in, ignoring the annoyed puffs of air coming from Yoongi every other second.
He suddenly takes a step around you to grab another bag, his chest rubbing up against your back as he grab the handles. You suck in a breath in surprise, unconsciously holding it until Yoongi returns to his spot. You can still feel the phantom warmth cling to the back of your shirt, your heartbeat speeding up from the sudden contact.
Yoongi’s irritation seems to calm down a bit after that, but your heart surely doesn’t. The cat hybrid keeps randomly brushing up against you as you move around the kitchen, hands grazing your arms and shoulders as he reaches for something above you, or a firm grip on your waist to move you out of the way.
You finally usher him into the living room to get some space, confused by the unusual amount of contact when he normally wants you to stay out of his way.
You take a deep breath before you bring the heated chicken dish into the living room, placing it on the table in front of Yoongi.
“Jihyo gave us some leftovers,” You explain, and he only raises an eyebrow in return. You know it’s definitely not just leftovers, but you’re too tired get into it, the whole day a whirlwind of different emotions.
“Just eat,” You mumble as you sit down next to him on the couch, reaching for the remote to turn to the TV on.
“Wait,“ Yoongi’s pale hand shoots out to wrap around your wrist. Your eyes snap up to his face in shock. His jaw is clenched, ears flat against his head as he looks down at you.
“I just .. It wasn’t enough – You still stink,” He hisses and you barely see his eyes narrow in on your neck before he pulls you close. Your words get caught in your throat as you feel Yoongi’s nose rubbing along the skin, his harsh breath making goosebumps rise all over your body.
His arms are locked around your back, gluing your arms to your side as he moves his face all over your exposed skin. You hear a low rumbling sound coming from his chest, and it reminds you of those broken purrs he made the evening Sana and Jihyo came over.
“Yoongi?” You squeak as the shock finally settles. You can feel his soft locks brushing against your face as he moves to the other side, hands digging into your back to pull you closer.
“You still reek of her,” His fangs lightly scrape against your shoulder as he hisses out the words, and you bite down harshly on your lips to hold back a gasp. Sure, maybe you’re a little touch starved, but this is Yoongi. Weird thoughts aren’t allowed.
“Her?” Your mind feels muddled as the sounds from his chest grows louder. You can almost feel his body vibrating from the force of it from where you’re pressed up against his chest.
“The dog,” He growls.
Sana.
You want to smack yourself. Of course Yoongi would think you smelled bad after Sana had been all over you with hugs and close proximity. Her scent was probably still lingering strongly on you. He most likely didn’t want the smell in his territory, and that why he’s .. scenting you.
If there was something you never expected that would happen between yourself and Yoongi, it was this. Territory and scenting goes hand in hand, and the fact that he was scenting you? He was practically marking you as his. The realization makes you blush, your face growing redder and redder for each broken purr that sounds from Yoongi’s body.
You try to reel in your thoughts. This is Yoongi. He’s definitely not marking you or claiming you in any way, he’s just getting rid of what he deems a foul smell that’s lingering on your skin. You’re sure of it.
Yoongi’s purrs suddenly stop, his face freezing against your skin as it finally smells like it’s supposed to do. He abruptly pulls back, and you almost tumble of the couch with the force he pushes you away with. He practically runs to the bathroom with small curses muttered under his breath.
You fan your face, the cold evening air outside suddenly sounding very tempting in comparison to the stifling heat inside your living room. When Yoongi doesn’t emerge after five minutes, you realize he’s probably as embarrassed as you are. It was most likely his instincts that made him scent you, and based on the hot and cold attitude he’s been giving you, you’re sure this is a blow to his pride.
A glance down at the table reminds you that he hasn’t eaten yet, and you doubt he will if you stay on the couch. You decide to sneak away into your room, not minding going to bed a little early.
As you settle into bed, you hear soft footsteps out in the hallway fading away into the living room. After some mindless scrolling on your phone, you hear those same footsteps moving into the kitchen.
You make sure to set your alarms, snuggling down under your covers as you stare up at the dark ceiling. Your chest flutters as nothing in the darkness can distract you from the memory of Yoongi’s skin against yours, and his surprisingly strong arms caging you in.
It felt .. nice, and the realizing that you wouldn’t mind if it happened again makes you quickly hide away under your comforter.
Go to bed, you scold yourself, quickly blocking out any thoughts that reminds you of golden eyes and slender fingers.
It definitely takes longer than normal to fall asleep, and you barely have even a thread of consciousness left when you hear your door creak open.
It’s silent for so long that you think you’ve dreamt it, but slowly but surely you feel the side of the bed facing the door dipping as another weight settles on top of it. The presence next to you feels bigger than the nights before, and you swear you feel another persons’ heat seep through the covers.
Again, everything grows so quiet and still that you don’t think much off it, sleep pulling you under quickly.
You dream of silky hair brushing against your cheek and strong arms wrapped around your waist, the soft echo of a husky voice whispering Mine burying itself deep in your heart.

Hello! Hope you enjoyed the sixth chapter of desolate! I mean .. we're getting there lmao 👀 IMPORTANT: I have three big papers due at the end of May, and while I've been distracting myself nicely from writing them so far, I've reached a point where I can't ignore them anymore if I want to actually pass my classes lol. Therefore, I won't be updating this story weekly anymore. I will be updating this bi-weekly, so that means that Abundance will be updated the weeks when this is not. This will also give me some time to make the chapters longer and I'll get the chance to plan more ahead, so it's honestly for the best! The faster I'll be able to finish my papers, the faster I can go back to updating both stories weekly. :) Hope you understand, and thank you all so much for the support so far, it makes me so happy! <3 I have a posting schedule on my page that will be updated as soon as I figure out the best day for updating, but I'm guessing it might end up being tuesdays or wednesdays. I will also post small sneak peaks of coming chapters as a little something extra. Hope you’re all well and my inbox is always open if you want to chat about the story or just fics or life in general! See you all soon! <3
