thinking about the “single-plank bridge” and how wei wuxian’s circumstance becomes all the more heartbreaking when we contexualise the kind of person he is. wei wuxian is never shown to be an isolated entity from the very start of his story. even when he lived on the streets, he had a way of connecting with those around him and wheedling shopkeepers into maintaining his daily sustenance. quickly after he came to lotus pier, he formed bonds with jc and yanli. wei wuxian was genuinely interested in people and forging friendships with those he liked. his junior disciples loved him. he was canonically one of the most popular young guys in the cultivation society. he frequently interacted with the common folk in yunmeng or anywhere else he happened to visit. at the guest lectures in the lan sect, wei wuxian was able to inspire multiple disciples (not just nie huaisang) into following his shenanigans. he is also able to befriend some of the wens, prime among them are ofc wen qing and wen ning. for a story as heavy in interpersonal conflicts as mdzs is, it is a given that people and their relationships will be centre stage and wei wuxian isn’t in the least lacking in these relationships. we see this even after his reincarnation that wei wuxian, even when he tries to stay disconnected, forms new bonds with ease. the juniors that are first wary of him soon come to deeply admire him and wei wuxian in turn becomes protective over them.
in short, wei wuxian is defined by his relationships as much as he is by his actions and convictions and thoughts. never once are we made to believe that wei wuxian’s ideal choice would be the “single plank bridge”, that he would be completely at ease with his isolation, that he would ever want to pick that option as a preference. in fact, the single plank bridge ideology has never been one that wei wuxian is shown to inherently gravitate towards or recommend/preach to other people. but that ideology is a last resort.
it is a choice made when his hand is forced, when no other comfortable option is allowed to him, when every door is shut in his face and isolating himself from the people he has known is the only avenue left with him. the single plank bridge is about sticking to his beliefs and not giving up, about doing the right thing no matter what because someone needs to take that stand and wei wuxian has never not been that someone.
i think that it is so crucial that the single plank bridge wasn’t so much a choice that wei wuxian made than a choice that was made for him simply because he refused to give up on the wens.
he was denied alternatives. he was denied help. sometimes, the anti-culture discourse overcorrects itself into painting every heroic act that happens to be sacrificial as a default ‘hero complex’ and self-sacrifical tendencies, ignoring the build-up of those difficult decisions and how, in this story, in mdzs, wei wuxian wasn’t foregoing the crowded broad road but that the crowd on the broad road had foregone him.

I see some people complain about some of the representation of minorities being too forced in WaT- and maybe it’s because I’m gay and mentally ill myself but I did not feel like that at all 😂
“Why was there a random trans man on Adolin’s story?” There’s random trans people everywhere in real life too, buddy
“Why is Rushu non-binary all of a sudden!???” I have like 5 friends who came out as non-binary all of a sudden in the past 5 years idk what to tell you
Don’t even get me started on the mentally ill- we’re all around you my dude

that said the idea of Zuko being the spirits go to guy for problem solving is so funny to me. something something AU in which Zuko was born a hundred years ago and when Aang vanishes the spirits are just like. gee. we need a temporary bridge between worlds until he gets back so they just make a beeline for zuko. yeah you'll do. we're going to slap you with immortality. go forth and problem solve for us.
zuko: do I have the option to unsubscribe.
spirits: no.
local immortal firebender doomed to wander the earth doing whatever the spirits want of him. they promise they'll release him if the Avatar ever returns. Zuko is increasingly suspicious that won't happen. he doesn't have any cool spirit powers- he just doesn't die. or grow. he would have appreciated not being perpetually sixteen actually.
he can't prevent the war from happening. that's not what the spirits want from him. but he watches it all unfold- and he tries to help whenever he gets the chance. he somehow still manages to forge vague connections to the rest of the world. it's not why he's there, but he helps a young woman from the northern water tribe escape her unwanted marriage by fleeing to the south. he hates going to omashu because that bumi kid won't leave him alone- what do you mean he's king now.
he watches the war get worse. he watches the dai li grow increasingly corrupt. there's so much he wants to do, but the spirits usually won't let him intervene in mortal affairs. he belongs to them. just when he starts to believe that he'll never be free, the spirits tell him he has only one last task left. go to the south pole. escort the three children there to the north pole.
it's a weird request, but zuko literally cannot refuse, so he goes. kanna greets him. she's gotten older again since the last time he saw her. her son is off to war. her oldest grandchild is almost his physical age. they went out fishing and haven't returned. when they do, they arrive on a sky bison- and there's an airbender with them.
it's the fucking avatar.
after a hundred years, the avatar has returned... and instead of instantly releasing him from his contract, the spirits want him to be his babysitter. what did he do to deserve this.
(well. his father being fire lord sozin probably didn't help.)

I really wish I could make it clear to people that asking for updates usually has the opposite effect, even when you add "please" to your sentence. I'm not saying this to be mean, and I know the comments are meant well, that they're a way for people to show they're thinking of the fic. However, my brain is a rude thing and will immediately put that fic in the "nope" category, even when or especially when I was already working on it. Leaving a heart emoji, a short 're-read kudos', or anything of the sort is far more effective at communicating that people are thinking of the fic, without making my brain shelve the fic for the next couple of days.
If I haven't updated a fic for a while, trust me, it's not because I've forgotten about it; I know when I haven't updated in months. It usually is because I'm struggling with real life, with writer's block, or am feeling burnt out with that particular fic. In short, I'm not postponing the updates on purpose.

hello i need to know everything about the obikin "had a great date only to find out that he's the groom's father at my childhood best friend's wedding" AU omg it's perfect for them!
yesss 🙏🙏
Im imagining like they honestly meet just a week before with no idea who the other is; anakin is in town a week early to help with wedding prep for the bride. obi-wan needs distraction from his part of the wedding prep because he’s up to here in family drama - they have a meet cute at the florist or a meet sleazy at a bar in town that ends with obi-wan coming back to anakin’s hotel room for the night and it’s great and anakin gets romantic about it cause it was that good.
Obi-Wan probably finds him very flattering if a bit intense and he sees no harm in keeping up a texting correspondence with anakin until the day of the rehearsal dinner and his son’s fiancée brings her friend over to meet the parents and that’s anakin. that’s the guy he slept with a week ago!!! and anakin is giving off ‘down to fuck again’ vibes no matter how distant and uninterested obi-wan is acting
probably because obi-wan decides to have the ‘that can never happen again’ conversation by shoving anakin into a linen closet during cocktail hour when they’re both a little tipsy…….

it's always bizarre to me when americans assume that everyone living in a foreign (often predominantly not-white, non-english speaking) country must be in favor of the government there. like dude we live in a country where it's nearly guaranteed that 50% of the population fucking hates the president at any given time. why would it be any different for other countries?
