Going the Extra Mile/s
There wasn’t a spare seat in the cockpit today, but I lingered in the doorway because I wanted to get a look at the giant migrating beasties that made the locals retreat underground for “cave season.” They were just as huge as expected.
“Well, this is definitely the right area,” Kavlae said as she adjusted the magnification on the secondary viewscreen. Gargantuan creatures like rhinos with too many legs ambled across a dusty alien landscape, easily big enough to crush our little courier ship underfoot. Kavlae zoomed in for a close look with her head fins flaring in curiosity.
I watched from the doorway, just as curious. These would make an interesting hazard. If the medicine we were delivering wasn’t so important, the captain might have passed on the job. But those people in the cave system were suffering an outbreak of something, and both their need and their payment were high. Besides, we shouldn’t have to get too close to danger. Someone was going to meet us and take the medicine back to the caves.
“What’s that?” Captain Sunlight said urgently. She pointed with a a yellow-scaled hand. “By the little one that’s bouncing around.”
Kavlae refocused the screen while Wio steered the ship, blue-ringed tentacles growing tense on the controls.
I edged forward for a better view. The remnants of something broken and mechanical filled the screen. When I saw handlebars, I frowned. “Is that a hoverbike?”
At the same time, Captain Sunlight asked, “Where’s the driver?”
Kavlae refocused and searched the area. Wio brought us in to where we could just see the herd on the main screen, but kept a safe distance. Yup, that wreckage was near the landing pad with the ramp down into the canyon. The missing driver was our contact. Not good.
“There! Closer!”
“Looks in rough shape,” Kavlae said. “Wish we had bio-scanners.”
I stood behind the captain’s chair, taking in the sight of the unmoving pile of clothes and fur. “Should I go tell Eggskin to grab a medical kit?”
“I’ll set an alert,” said Captain Sunlight.
Wio passed her the microphone for the comms without a word, already clicking switches anxiously.
I stood there with nothing to do while the captain announced to the whole ship that priorities had changed. The crates in the cargo bay would have to wait while we made an urgent rescue of the person waiting for them.
“…And we’d best be quick, because he may have been kicked by the megafauna, and they’re still in range. Eggskin, meet me at the cargo door.” She clicked off, handed it back, then directed Wio to land but hold the engines ready.
“I’ll keep watch,” Kavlae said. “That baby is probably the one that did it. The adults look too calm.”
“Call if there’s danger,” Captain Sunlight told her, hopping down and trotting toward the door.
I followed on my long human legs. “I’ll get an exo suit and go with Eggskin,” I volunteered. “I don’t know this species, but I might be able to help.” Veterinarian training, I’d learned, was more useful in space than a regular humans-only medical degree. It’s that familiarity with a wide range of body types that does it.
“Good,” said the captain, hurrying along. “Be quick with the suit.”
We arrived at the cargo bay, and I did my best to wriggle into my exo suit before she finished explaining the situation to the many worried faces. They were all wearing suits already.
Not because of environment, but because of contagion. This delivery was risky on more than one level.
“I have scanners and stabilizers,” said Eggskin. “Just say the word.” While there weren’t usually many injuries delivering cargo, and the good doctor spent more time preparing meals as the good cook, they were the acknowledged expert on medical care for sentient species. They were also a Heatseeker like the captain, just with scales colored a pale yellow-green and the full name “Skin of the Egg that is Translucent and Ready to Hatch.”
I’d realized privately that those scales were the color of fresh boogers, but I wasn’t about to say so out loud.
“Everybody suited?” asked Captain Sunlight, her lizardy face looking out of her visor.
“Ready,” I said. The rest of the room agreed.
“Eggskin, Robin, and Blip into the airlock,” the captain directed, hitting the controls. “Take the small sled, and get him back inside quickly. Stay in the airlock while we scan for contagion.”
“Got it.” We did as directed: one human, one small lizardy person, and one big fin-covered sea monster type person ready for action with an empty hoversled. This was not what I expected today’s delivery to involve.
The outer door opened to a bright, sunny desert, with giant creatures in the background and an injured local on the dirt ahead of us. Wio had parked close. Good.
Eggskin took the lead, rushing over with scanner in hand to check for life. I followed, moving to the other side while Blip pulled the hoversled into stretcher position. The guy on the ground was curled halfway into the fetal position, covered in red dust like he’d tumbled quite a ways after being kicked. It was hard to make out the species. Kinda mousy, about Heatseeker size.
“He’s alive,” Eggskin reported. “Impact injuries; unconscious; fixable. Be careful of his head.”
Blip and I worked together to lift him onto the hoversled. He didn’t weigh much, but he was limp and barely breathing. I cradled his head carefully.
A growing earthquake made me look up just as the ship’s loudspeaker said, “Incoming! Get onboard now!”
An excitable young rhinocipede the size of a motel was barreling toward us. We pushed the sled and ran.
When the door slammed, I felt the ship take off in a way we were usually insulated from when riding properly inside the ship. It was almost enough inertia to knock me off my feet, but not quite. Eggskin leaned against the wall and Blip took a better stance.
The guy on the sled wheezed.
“Scanning,” said the captain’s voice on the loudspeaker. The ship leveled out abruptly. “Okay, he’s safe; bring him inside.” The inside of the airlock opened up to a double row of concerned crewmates, leaving space for Eggskin to take the guy to our little medbay. I assumed someone had moved the spare chairs out of it already.
While we got him in there and onto the bed, everyone else took turns worrying and cleaning up the trail of dust. Blip put the sled away. I got to be medical assistant.
“It’s mostly broken ribs and a concussion,” Eggskin told me while they moved the various medical machinery into position. “Very lucky he didn’t puncture a lung. See if you can wet-wipe some of that dust off his face, will you? Don’t want him sneezing right now, or getting a scratched cornea.”
I did what I could to help, though the medbay really was top notch, despite being no bigger than the average bathroom. Soon enough the mousy little fellow was stabilized and healing, still unconscious but with less dust in his fur. He looked kind of like a chipmunk, though with long legs like a jackrabbit, or maybe a jerboa. No idea what the species name was.
That didn’t matter. The fact that he and his bike were out of commission did.
“How do we make the delivery?” I asked the captain where she stood outside the medbay, surrounded by others. Eggskin was keeping an eye on the patient behind me.
“That’s the problem for certain,” she said, starting to pace. “I’ve contacted their communications hub, but things are more dire than they let on before. Long story, but they just don’t have another driver they can send.”
Zhee’s opinionated bug eyes appeared over Blip’s shoulder. “So let’s just fly closer,” he said. “Lower it from the cliff edge.”
Captain Sunlight shook her head. Kavlae beat her to the answer. “The animals will swat us out of the sky,” she said. “It’s been tried before. And there are local laws about harassing the things to get them to move. It’ll just end in a panic dance that crushes the canyon wall.”
“And gets us sued,” Captain Sunlight put in.
Paint put up a hand like a child, though a scaly orange one. “Why can’t we send our own vehicle down the canyon? I suppose it’s too narrow for the car, but what about the bike?”
Captain Sunlight turned to the toothpaste-green tentacle alien behind her. “Mimi, do you want to tell us why we can’t use our hoverbike?”
Mimi threw his tentacles in the air. His deep voice was exasperated when he said, “I already apologized for using the parts without asking! The rusted thing is falling apart anyway, and we never use it! The ship needed exactly that part!”
The captain sighed. “Yes, I’m sure it made sense at the time. But that puts us in a bad position now. Someone’s going to have to go on foot.”
Mur wove his own tentacles together at floor level. “Will that be fast enough? This is a rush order.”
Captain Sunlight spread her hands. “It will have to be,” she said. “There are no other options.”
Paint looked around. “So who’s fastest? Trrili?”
The terrifying black-and-red insectlike form standing in the back shook her head. “Short distances yes; long runs no.”
Zhee nodded. “Long runs are for herd animals.”
“Well, we don’t have any of those,” said Captain Sunlight. “Who’s got good endurance?”
At the chorus of nos, I had a dawning realization about my various crewmates. None of their species ran marathons.
“Let me do it,” I said quickly. “I can do the Balto run.”
“Balto run?” asked Captain Sunlight.
“Hero from my planet. One of several, really. But it was even a medicine delivery a lot like this one! But through the snow, not a desert. Anyway.” I stood up straight. “I volunteer.”
“Good enough for me,” said the captain. “Let’s get the crates strapped onto a sled. I had hoped to send two people, since this is too important to risk on a random stumble, but…”
“Someone could ride on the sled,” I said, starting to smile. “It won’t make it any harder to pull. And they can help hit the bumpers so it doesn’t bonk into the canyon walls.”
Paint’s hand shot up. “Ooh! Me!”
Captain Sunlight pointed at her. “You’re it. Both of you get ready in five, with a day’s worth of the food and water of your choice.”
“Will it take that long?” I asked, hoping my shoes were up to the task without any horrible blistering.
“That depends on you,” said the captain. “Scoot.”
I scooted. This was exciting.
In five minutes, I was ready with a bag of supplies to be strapped to the sled in easy reach, and my most comfortable clothes. I’d gone to the bathroom and stretched. Paint was similarly ready, though without the stretching.
“Let’s gooo!” she said from atop the hoversled, where she had a cushion and handholds on the front crate. Also an exo suit.
I wasn’t wild about wearing mine for this whole jaunt, but it was surprisingly flexible as these things go, and it promised to keep my air fresh and oxygenated.
“Is your pocket communicator charged and functioning?” asked Captain Sunlight.
“Yup. Double-checked.”
“Then I wish you the best of luck.” She stood back with a two-handed alien salute, and everyone cheered while we waited for the airlock to cycle.
“Is this just like your hero?” Paint asked me.
“Surprisingly yes,” I said, giving the harness an exploratory tug. “Glad I’ve got real food instead of dog treats, though.”
“Huh?”
“Balto was a dog.”
The airlock opened with a bang — somebody should oil that — and we were off down the ramp at my best pace, with dramatic fanfare behind. The sled was easy to pull, thanks to good ol’ hover tech, and the bumpers would make sure it didn’t glide forward to knock me off my feet. Plus Paint was ready to help steer it as needed.
The sun was bright, but the dusty wind slid right off my suit. The giant stompy beasties were far enough away and not looking. The ramp down into the canyon had a decent grip, and despite the history of water carving the canyon, there was only an easily-avoided stream at the bottom.
“We’re probably lucky this is the dry season,” I called up to Paint, not out of breath yet. “I bet the river gets big when it rains.”
“Save your breath for running!” Paint laughed.
“Yeah, okay,” I said. “But eventually I’ll want to walk for a bit, and then it’s time for space shanties.”
I managed to keep up the pace for longer than I’d expected; yay me; then downgraded to a long-legged stride that I could keep up indefinitely. Well, close enough to indefinitely. My legs were probably going to be sore, but that was nothing to complain about. Blisters were more annoying.
Paint was keeping an eye on the narrow strip of sky far above, to make sure no hazards approached. “Do you think singing will attract their attention?”
“Oh. Good point,” I said. I walked in silence for a moment.
“What if you sing quietly?” Paint asked.
“Yeah, and Kavlae has probably got us in sight anyway. They’ll call us if they see a problem.” I thought for a moment. “I don’t know any songs about delivering medicine, so here’s one about food and drink.” I launched into The Wellerman, appreciating how my voice bounced off the canyon walls.
The trip passed quickly. I alternated between jogging and walking, occasionally taking sips of water and bites of energy bars. Paint made for good company. She had a pretty good singing voice too, and shared some great kids’ songs from her childhood, which I was going to be sure to get written down later. Especially the one about counting scales and losing count.
It had been about three hours when my phone beeped for attention. I slowed my current jog to a walk again and pulled it out. My heart rate kicked a little faster from concern. “Hello?”
“You’re almost there,” said the captain.
“What?? Already?”
“‘Already,’ she says.” Captain Sunlight sounded like she was rolling her eyes to whoever else was listening. “Anyone else would have dropped from exhaustion.”
“After only three hours?” I asked. “I used to go on casual hikes every weekend that were longer than this!”
Indistinct sounds made it through the communicator. “Impressive,” Captain Sunlight said. “At any rate, prepare yourselves to greet the outpost soon. I’ve told them to expect you.”
“Well all right, then,” I said. “Thanks.”
The captain clicked off, and I put away the phone. I heard Paint rustling snack bags as she tidied up.
The canyon ahead was a long straight patch, with a corner at the end that I suspected would put us into view of the outpost.
“Ready to run?” I asked Paint.
A container snapped shut. “Ready!”
“Onward!” I charged ahead, pulling a sled full of life-saving medicine on the easiest death-defying run I’d ever been on.

Scaramouche x (Male) Reader — Modern!au
notes: fluff, high school!au, first time writing with a male reader so bear with me if this ends up a bit stiff but it would be generally similar to how I write gn!reader, slowburn (?) but the burn isn't burning the way i want it to — sort of plotless as well (?) scaramouche crochets here

Monday, 7:00 PM
"Excuse me! Wait!" You call for the moving bus as it was just about to start moving. It halts after the driver hears you and the double doors hiss open. Your feet hop onto the steps, swiping your bus card against the scanner before moving through the aisles of seats before taking a seat on one of the spots near the second set of doors in the middle.
Exhaustion creeps up on you as your back hits the seat's rest, your back muscles start to relax when you release an exhale of relief. You throw your head back and the bus starts moving after the last passenger boards at the last minute. Truthfully, you were sort of glad that you weren't the last to get on.
As you re-focus on the movement of the bus, you manage to lay your eyes on the last person who boarded the bus. The boy looked strikingly familiar but you were far too worn out to think about it further. Before you knew it, it was finally your stop and you reluctantly forced yourself to get up and exit the bus. You would have opted to slump in your seat and let the vehicle take you anywhere but it would've been hell to walk from the last stop back to your area—which was 3 stops away.
Once you hear the lock of your front door click open, you take of your work shoes and make your way your bed. You couldn't be bothered to change into pajamas and allowed your exhaustion carry you off to dreamland.
Tuesday, 7:05 PM
The second time you ride the bus this week, you see the familiar guy again in the exact seat again. This time, you're not tired out of your mind to recognize him. On the seat across you sat the vice president of the your high school's student council, Scaramouche. His purple strands of hair fall stray on his porcelain face as he turned his head down to look at his phone, he had headphones that hung above his head.
Now that you think about it, maybe his popularity within your batch was reasonable. He was unfairly pretty for someone who was apparently too snarky for his own good. That sounded mean—you haven't exactly interacted with him enough to agree with those rumors.
You catch yourself staring too long when he suddenly feels eyes on him and raises his head up slightly to look in your direction. You immediately busy yourself with your own phone and desperately ignore the heat that made its way up to your face and the pink that the tip of your ears.
When you finally get off on your stuff, Scaramouche pays no mind to your leave and simply focuses on the pages of his novel.
Wednesday, 6:55 PM
You reach the bus stop absolutely soaking from head to toe. The necktie that came with your uniform hung slightly loose under your collar and your hair was drenched. Little could be done to avoid the pouring rain, only using the shelter of your backpack as a pathetic attempt to shield yourself from the harsh raindrops.
The bus hasn't arrived yet, and unlike the other stops, the one nearest to your school does not have any type of roofing that could cover yourself so you had to bear with standing as the cold water pricked at your skin.
You thought the rain had stopped for a moment when you feel the rain over your head stop but as you look up, a white umbrella hung over your head as an arm brought it up. You turn around slightly to reveal Scaramouche holding it the base.
"Oh— uh." You stammer in surprise, eyes going wide
Scaramouche shuffles closer to your side to find shelter under his umbrella. "You know, I think it's pretty stupid not to bring an umbrella when the forecast said so," he huffs as he observed the flow of the rain as it poured down onto the road.
"Didn't get to read it— or rather I.. don't read it." You scratch your nape, an awkward chuckle escapes you afterwards. The purple-haired boy only hums before the bus pulls up at 7pm. You both get on and sit on your usual seat. You would be lying if you said you were slightly disappointed with this arrangement but you quickly forget about it when the pitter-pattering of the rain on the window lulls you to sleep on the bus.
You wake up when you feel a gentle hand shaking you awake. Eyes fluttering open, you turn to see that Scaramouche was the one responsible for your return to a lucid state.
"It's your stop soon." He curtly states, he was standing up beside your seat's row with one side of his headphones behind his ear.
You look around the bus and out the window to see the familiar buildings of your area, feeling that the bus was slowing down as you pull up to the stop.
Your lips form a small 'o' before muttering a soft thanks to him before standing up with your bag slung over your shoulder. You wipe the small trail of drool that dripped from the side of your mouth, praying to the archons Scaramouche didn't notice it.
The bus comes to a halt and you slightly jerk forward from the intertia, the familiar doors hiss open and you walk over to leave. You don't know what possesses you to do so, but you raise a hand up to wave at Scaramouche just as you leave. He raises an eyebrow in surprise but luckily, he reciprocates the action.
By this time, the rain had stopped and you watch as the bus left to the next stop.
Thursday, 7:01 PM
To your surprise, Scaramouche was seated before you today.
You ponder at the entrance of the bus for a while. He's had you acting out of your usual routine and demeanor now so why not take it a step further? You plop yourself down on the seat beside him, placing your bag down on your lap. You sneeze in the other direction to avoid spraying on Scaramouche. A cold was already starting to build up from standing in the rain yesterday.
After a few minutes, the bus begins moving. You feel a cold sensation on your hand and see that Scaramouche was nudging a small bottle of drugstore medicine into your hand.
"You look like shit," Scaramouche says as he looked back at his book. "Drink this."
You were taken aback but respond with a quick chuckle before taking it out of his hand and opening the cap to drink out if it. "Classy choice of words. Thanks." You nudge his arm with your elbow playfully. He only responds with a scoff and the rest of the ride is spent in comfortable silence.
You went home that day in high spirits, you were slowly getting to know Scaramouche. Maybe he wasn't so bad after all, perhaps just a little rough around the edges.
Friday, 7:00 PM
You take the seat beside Scaramouche again, who had his headphones on again. He acknowledges you with a nod snd turns his focus back to the item he seemed to be crocheting.
Getting the cold definitely took a toll on your energy. You went through all your classes today half-asleep. Fighting a virus knocked you out the moment you sat on your seat. Before you could catch yourself, you fall asleep and your head rests on Scaramouche's shoulder. He stiffens at the contact for a while before relaxing. A 'tch' leaves his lips but he proceeds to adjust his position and your head's placement to make sure you don't wake up with a stiff neck.
Now it was his turn to look at you up close. As much as he's reluctant to admit it, he finds it slightly.. subtly .. cute how peaceful you looked when you slept. You often participated in class, something even he doesn't tend to do as student council vice president, and wonders whether you actually rest given the slightly dark eyebags under your eyes. His instincts get the better of him and his fingers reach to swipe the short stray strands of your hair away from your face to get a clearer view of your face prevent them from making your face itch too much. You gently stir from his action but never wake up, to his relief. He'd rather die than have you find out what he just did. A pink hue dusts over his features and he tries to turn his focus back to his book. He only wakes you up as gentle as he did last time when the bus pulls up at your stop. You say a quick thanks before leaving again, this time he peers over his shoulder at the window as you walk away from the bus stop.
From that week forward, the feeling of looking forward to bus rides together was a mutual thing that the both of you felt. Scaramouche felt more inclined to hand you little items that he made from crocheting everytime you sat down beside him. You often walked to the stop from school together and it was filled with conversation (mostly you talking and him listening, but he liked it that way). This became a little treasured routine between the two of you. It doesn't take long for the both of you to start warming up to each other and give fleeting touches that makes the other feel a blooming sensation in your chests. It drives you a bit crazy to think how much can change within a week, and probably from stolen glances in between class lectures.
Each time you fall asleep on the bus, you could rely on Scara to serve as a comfortable shoulder to lean on during rides home <3

@fluffbruary Day 16
“Finally!” Zack called dramatically, collapsing on Ivy, who shook him off with a disgruntled warning not to bother the driver. “That one was hard!”
Carmen spun the box containing the La Peregrina Pearl in her hand. “Mmm, not particularly. For one of the most famous jewels in the world, security was sadly lacking.”
“Only for you, Red,” laughed Player onscreen. “I’d say a hundred guards plus the no-oxygen room, not to mention the thumbprint and iris scanner would be enough for anyone else. Be careful with that,” he added. “It bid for more than 11 million dollars, you know.”
Carmen clicked her tongue. “It’s a good thing Countess Cleo will not be getting her hands on it then.”
“She would certainly love this,” Shadowsan agreed. “We must be careful for a while. The only thing the Countess treasures more than her jewels and clothes is revenge.”
“They’ll never get us, Carm’s too good,” Ivy scoffed. “Bro, if you elbow me one more time, I’m tossing you off this ship.”
“Chill, Ives,” Zack drawled. “Player, any idea what our next mission is?”
Player had his thinking face on, clearly having switched the screen to go through the hard drive. “Honestly, it’s a wait-and-see game at this point. They’ve been trying to switch up their missions and agents recently.”
“Probably because they know boss will come and get them,” Zack said. “And her suuuuper awesome crew. Hi-yah!” He did a terrible imitation of a kung fu chop. “Sensei, when will my training continue?”
“When you’ve displayed any aptitude for the martial arts,” Shadowsan retorted dryly. “In the meantime – or for the rest of your life, seeing as that seems more likely – I would suggest remaining the get-away driver.”
“The get-away sailor this time,” Ivy commented. “And it’s me, and not him! Ha.”
“Want me to make you a little paper captain’s hat sis?” Zack chuckled.
“I’ll smash it over your head, bro.”
“It might be a good thing to have a break between this and the next caper,” Carmen was telling Player as Zack and Ivy continued their argument and Shadowsan continued to bemoan all the life choices that led him to witness it, “We could have some rest. And you could pay attention in school. And do your homework. And go to sleep on time, for once.”
“You sound like my mom,” Player complained, leaning back with his hands behind his head. The tension always in his voice when he guided them on missions – responsible for his team, his family – bled out as he enjoyed a conversation with his best friend. “Besides. I have absolutely no doubt that you’ll find a way to get into trouble even without any capers. I’ll need to stay up late anyway!”
“Don’t sound so happy about that,” Carmen chided. “Seriously, Player, you need to learn to take better care of yourself. Have you eaten today?”
Player waved a plate of noodles and fork mockingly at the camera.
“Something other than that breathtakingly unhealthy stuff?”
“The unhealthy stuff’s what’s tasty, boss,” Zack chimed in. “I don’t get how you don’t like junk food.”
“I grew up on VILE Island,” Carmen replied amusedly. “Not much time for junk there unless it’s valuable or evil.”
“Coach Brunt set a very specific diet for Carmen growing up,” Shadowsan nodded. “I remember Dr. Bellum contributed – most probably why you were allowed any sweets at all.”
“Weird to think of that huge Coach being a mom,” Ivy commented.
“Carm doesn’t need any moms,” Zack snickered. “She’s got Player.”
“Player’s clearly the mom friend,” Carmen agreed.
Player made an outraged noise. “I’m the mom friend? Red, remind me who was just nagging me about bedtime and food like I’m in preschool?”
“Red, did you just get knifed? Where did she get you? Are you sitting down? Did you take the knife out? How much is it bleeding? Do you know how to clean it? You know the rate of people dying of knife wounds in Canada is 0.49 in a hundred thousand people? And you’re like that with someone who’s been trained all her life to deal with things like knife wounds,” Carmen imitated Player’s concerned fussing teasingly.
“You got stabbed!” Player cried indignantly. “That’s different!”
“You’re like that every time someone’s hurt, Player,” Ivy said. “Also, I don’t get how the stats help.”
“Yeah, what’s with that? D’you reckon knowing how many people die of that particular thing will help us recover from it?" Zack asked, puzzled.
Player flushed. Carmen knew perfectly well he ranted without thinking when he panicked, and that solid hard statistics was his favourite thing to recite. “It’s better than your typical habits, Zack,” she saved him from answering.
“Anything’s better than lil’ bro eating his feelings,” Ivy mocked.
“Ow, that hurts, Ives,” Zack said, sniffing exaggeratedly. “More than VILE’s ego after boss kicked their ass for the thousandth time, I’m sure.”
“Nothing could sting more than that,” Shadowsan smirked, for once joining in on the joking.
“Not to mention the rubbing of salt in the wound when we make the return of the goods public and donate the money to charity,” Carmen added lazily, putting her legs up on the couch, keeping an eye on the surroundings. The boat was still rather in the open, and she didn’t need Devineaux and ACME interfering with a successful caper.
“Speaking of which, we need to decide on whom you’re going to be giving the Pearl to, Red,” Player said, stretching his hands forward and typing. “On this one you’ve liberated. . . . Drumroll, please. . .” Zack and Ivy obliged. “Eight-hundred thousand euros from VILE!”
“Woohoo!” Zack and Ivy cheered, and even Shadowsan cracked a smile. Zack began beatboxing, and Ivy began to sing. “The best thief - in the world? Yeah, it’s Carmen Sandiego. Where in the world is – Carmen Sandiego? Where - will she go next – no one ever—”
“So, any ideas?” Player asked over the music and Shadowsan’s annoyed grumblings.
“Jules, obviously, for the Pearl,” Carmen said, leaning closer to the monitor in order to see her friend better. “And just pick a few non-profits from the list, Player. Though preferably an orphanage, for this loot.” Her face darkened and she turned away.
“Hey. Not your fault, Red. You can’t save everyone,” Player consoled gently, referring to the orphan who had gotten killed by VILE simply for being a bystander.
“No, but it would be nice to save someone,” she replied with unusual bitterness.
“You do. You save loads of people,” Player said insistently. “Think of how many people this money will help. Think of how many trees whose oxygen you’ve saved by making sure Tigress won’t be speaking for a week at least!”
That got a smile. “Fair enough.”
Player watched her carefully, even as he quickly arranged for the wire transfers. She seemed okay, but he’d have to keep an eye out. “I’ll book a flight to wherever Juuuules is,” Player extended the name teasingly. “You do realize you’re the only who calls her that?”
“It suits her,” Carmen said nonchalantly.
“Yeah, and you’ve got a crush,” Player said delightedly. “Black Sheep’s got a crush! Carmen’s got a crush!”
Carmen reached out and tapped the screen, mock threateningly. “Quit it, Player, or I’ll tell Zack all about your antics at the gaming tournament at age eight.”
Player mimed zipping his mouth. “Shut up. Got it.” He couldn’t resist another jab though. “You know you always drop whatever you’re doing to go see her, even on capers?”
“Are we talking about Julia Argent?” Zack said bluntly.
“And Carmen being very obviously smitten with her?” Shadowsan added. Carmen glared at him in betrayal.
“No, we’re discussing how the lot of you are interfering traitors, who are blighting my very good day,” she drawled. Her eyes caught on another boat. “And speaking of blights. . .”
Player caught on, tapping a key, eyes sharpening. “Well that’s a vile blight on the landscape.”
“It is quite a landscape isn’t it?” Shadowsan said, getting up and readying himself. “A perfect spot for taking down more agents.”
“Awesome!” Zack said, tumbling to his feet. “Time for our training to continue, Sensei!”
“Not the time, bro!”
Carmen slipped the Pearl into her pocket, zipping it tightly shut, before taking a flying leap from her boat to the other one, taking two out with a roundhouse kick.
“Grunts!” Ivy called. “Couldn’t send any of the better agents, could you? Haven’t seen the goat for a while.” She blindly swung a club and somehow managed to take one down. “Ha! There’s one!”
Shadowsan efficiently thinned the crowd. “And mine’s six.”
Carmen ducked the blow from the sword, before using a maneuver Coach Brunt had once taught her and managing to knock the owner out with it. “And there’s the last.”
Zack pouted. “I didn’t get a single one.”
“Aw, Zack,” Player said in the intercom. “Don’t worry about it. I didn’t either.”
“Hear that, Zack? You’re being compared to a kid sitting a whole continent away.” Ivy laughed under her breath, swinging an arm around her brother’s shoulder as they climbed back on their own boat.
“I believe this calls for a toast.” Shadowsan proclaimed.
“So it does,” Carmen agreed. “Player. ACME?”
“On its way,” he said in satisfaction. “Good day’s work, team.”
“I think this calls for some alcohol,” Ivy said. “Tada! This one’s supposed to be the best around here. Get the glasses, I want to taste it.”
“Cool, sis,” Zack grinned, opening the cupboard to produce the glasses. “Good thing you’re not here Player.”
Player knew he shouldn’t take the bait. He knew.
“Why?” He said anyway.
“’Cause a little guy like you couldn’t drink, and then you’d be all left out!” Zack said melodramatically. “It’d be really sad.”
“Carmen!” Player said in agitation.
Carmen laughed, watching her family bicker.
“Far from VILE Island, is it not?” Shadowsan asked quietly, sipping from his own glass.
“Quite a bit,” she agreed, taking her own glass and holding it in a toast to her best friend who was still angrily ranting at Zack. “And I couldn’t be gladder for it.”

Let's talk about what I've been up to.
I really wanna be more active on here, but I'm not very interesting. Here are some things about me that has been big in my life now. - I work nights as an airport shuttle driver. I don't get home until 4am. - I've been on HRT for a couple years now. It's been okay. I feel like there haven't been a lot of changes though. But I just got new bras the other day and now I have small cleavage. So that's fun. - I made affiliate with Twitch recently. I really need to set up all the options and make myself look more professional. - I'm looking into vocal surgery to sound more fem. I expect the best I can do is confuse people rather than pass. Maybe I'll look into facial feminization too. Who knows? - I got a 3DS capture card yesterday and going to install that so I can play 3DS games on stream. I haven't completely decided what I wanna play first. - I'm redesigning my sona to be a bat person. I have it mostly complete, but I wanna draw more angles for it first. Then I'll share. - I discovered that drawing digitally contributed heavily to my artistic fall. When I was going to design my sona, I tried to start digitally and couldn't bring myself to do anything. I just felt bad. So I tried traditional drawings, like how my ask blogs started, and I was able to do it. I wasn't nearly as overwhelmed with stress. I'll need to get a new scanner to be able to put them online. I got rid of the last one since I wasn't using it and I had to move. I felt there was no point in bringing it with me.
Anyway, I want to be more active on here. So feel free to send me questions and I'll see what I can do with it. This ended up being a lot longer than I expected. I just went, "I wanna post something," and made this. If you read this, thanks for taking the time. I am going to stream later tonight with @ask-melissa-and-the-band on Twitch. Come join me and watch as I scream about the sea dragon leviathan being terrifying in subnautica.

tw blood
Norm watched the links and ad the scans run but he could see the vital monitors to see how weak they were. Grace’s connection was weak, and he doubted she was connected or had the mental strength to use her avatar much more than a sit-up and chat. While a glance to Jake’s monitor, while his injury was worse, he had a much better connection with his avatar.
He had his doubts Jake would come here, he hoped for Jake’s survival he’s put doing something for drama on the back burner.
“How are they?” Trudy’s voice was soft, pushing a pack of wet wipes into his hand.
“Weak.” Norm spoke, gladly pulling one out to wipe the red from his hands. God, he hated blood. It was all under his nails still. He hated that. He did wish he had taken a better medical course, but what good was CPR here? He could bandage small cuts, perhaps even a few stitches if it came down to it but this?
This was far beyond him.
He knew bullets did far more damage than it looked to be because of the science behind it; the transfer of kinetic energy would expand the flesh around it into a cavity before the flesh would naturally try to elasticate back. That wasn’t even including the damage to the bone or other body organs that were close by.
The closer it was, the worse it was.
Perhaps the distance between them and the shooter was what stopped both of them from dying so quickly. Jake must have been hit by a bullet that had rebounded off a metal side. The first impact had taken the worse of the energy before his soft squishy body was in its line of trajectory. Something perhaps similar with Grace but she was probably more directly hit.
“Grace’s external bleed is… stopped, good work by the way.” Norm complimented, “But internally, it’s an inside bleeding mess. I think sun-down was wishful thinking.” He tapped along the screen, glad for once the RDA’s paranoid about driver health that the pod contained various body scanners. Enough that he could see the damage to her body and the slowly growing mass of internal bleeding.
Trudy’s hand patted his arm lightly. “Then let’s hope the Na’vi do some magical voodoo…assuming they know their way around a human body.”
“Mo’at does.” Norm was confident that of all people, the Omatikaya Tsahìk would know…but also on the basis, he knew Neytiri was a former student of Grace’s; the human body must have been touched upon at least once. Mo’at hopefully knew a lot more about gunshot wounds as well given the…unfortunate incidents among the RDA and the Omatikaya before the felling of Hometree.
“Still, you trust her to know how to fix that?” Trudy folded her arms over her chest, eyeing the link signal with discontent. “This was never supposed to happen. Damn, Quaritch.”
“It was Quaritch?”
Trudy nodded. “The Samson has an external camera. I was…reviewing some of the footage when I was checking over the damage to the windows.”
“I…completely forgot about that. Is it okay?” God forbid they'd get stranded here in the middle of the deadliest woods in the universe. So far.
“She’s a tough thing, designed to take a beating. I can patch her up.” Trudy nodded, with some assurance “We’ll need to paint her, so the native don’t try to shoot the out screen…or me for that matter. Do they have a ‘we’re on your side’ colour scheme by any chance?”
Norm shook his head but he liked the idea of that. It’d certainly set their Samson aside. “We could stripe it, white and purple.”
Trudy’s head cocked to the side thoughtfully. “I do like purple.”
Norm smiled. “We have some powder paint to use. Black, white and the primary colours. Mix then just add water then you’re good to go.”
“Sweet.” Trudy didn’t move, though not that he expected her to just move off and start painting at a time like this.
The vitals shifted on Grace’s monitor before he saw the familiar signs of her return. He gently tapped along to turn off the link before Trudy opened up the lid.
Grace looked worse, somehow but her expression was…better than he expected.
“Did everything go well?” Norm asked, “Are they going to help?”
Grace licked her lips tiredly. “We…extended the olive branch.” Her voice was a little raspier now. “I left them coming as a choice but…I think so?”
The answer wasn’t filling Norm was confidence but he reached for the pillows to set under her again. A wince passed her face as he got her comfortable.
“How’s Jake?”
Norm spared a glance over, “He…has a surprisingly stable link. Much stronger as well but… I can’t know where he’s wandered off to. Shame you didn’t tracker his ass the first time he escaped the ambient room. His human body is…another matter. He’s lost a lot of blood and it looks like damage through his kidney and spleen.”
“I thought you could live without your spleen,” Trudy remarked, if quietly.
“Right now, it’s a bag of blood. Never good to lose a bag of blood.” Norm sighed out.
Grace’s lips twitched though her eyes flickered around the room. “Let’s… let’s wait outside.”
Norm looked back at her in surprise. Outside? Where all the danger was. He hoped that wasn’t the blood loss talking; they weren’t equipped with dealing with a wild animal attack if the wrong visitor showed up. “Outside?”
“If…if they come for us, they can’t fit in here. Too big.” Grace licked her lips again, “Trudy, I need drink. Juice box? Whiskey?”
“I don’t think you should.” Norm interjected, “I’m sorry Grace but… I’m not sure eating or drinking anything should be a good idea when your intestines are a little worse for wear.”
Norm though held her glare but she didn’t argue—thank god because he doubted he could withhold much more. Half-dead, she was still scary when she wanted to be.
“Blood loss can make you thirsty but… let’s get you outside.” Norm looked around, glad to see Jake’s wheelchair was about so he grabbed that up and set beside the link bed. If Grace wanted out… why not let her. Let her feel the Pandoraian air on her skin at the least. It was a beautiful morning.
Carefully, and between them both they lifted Grace into Jake’s wheelchair, pausing for Grace to adjust but it was clear to see she was in much deeper pain now before wheeling her to the airlock. Grace clutched the armrests too tightly, seemingly not noticing as Norm fixed her mask on before they left and the much harder part was the shack emergency steps down—there was no ramp. So it was a colourful affair, to which a hurried grab of Grace’s blanket and soon, Grace was lying on it like it was a picnic blanket on her back.
“Ikran!” Grace called weakly.
Norm flinched as a massive, blue-winged beast suddenly appeared through the treeline, falling back into the foliage and for a second he thought it was going to go for Grace…. But it stopped and the blue person attached to it seemed to look very startled… waved to them then promptly slipped off his saddle, his queue disconnecting in the motion and carried on as gravity intended. The ikran shifted its wing and allowed him to side harmlessly to the wild grassy floor but stood very close which Norm would know would end with his death if he tried to approach. He could feel its eyes but didn’t dare look at it’s face.
Ikrans didn’t like eye contact.
“Wow, that’s one big dinosaur,” Trudy whispered, wide-eyed at being so close that Norm felt puny. He had seen them before but it had been through his avatar. They were big then but now… he was a ready-meal for such a creature.
“Let’s get Jake out.” If he could calm that Ikran the better.
Jake was less lucid though mumbling something about wanting a Toruk as they lifted him from the link bed. Norm felt nausea to see how much red had leaked into the gel bedding; highlighting each and every flaw in its surface or natural diverts and pattern but also, he could feel his hands once again become saturated with the wet red as well which only spread upon the blanket as they set him into his front. The red was more prominent alone his skin and what had soaked into his clothes.
Norm washed his hands as Trudy stayed with them before he hopped into his own, clean link and woke up his avatar, finally giving the body some food—a crappy protein bar but found Trudy sitting on the edge of the blanket watching as two woodsprites seemed to float down. Grace watched it settle on the front of her mask, smiling softly at it as it patted around it’s smooth surface.
-
Tsu’tey was not pleased, but he knew the Tsahìk had such a wisdom that carried more weight than just his distaste. Despite her loss, she was willing to save those who had part of the destruction of their home. Death of their people. He respected her and she was more aware than what he lacked.
He should have had more time.
He was not ready for the mantle.
But, for his people he would. He would respect to Tsahìk’s wishes but, he would do no more than what she was asking of him to fulfil that. It was do little to ignore the Tsahìk’s words when the people needed to see his leadership and support with Mo’at. Mo’at’s ream was to the spirits and to interpret Eywa’s will. If Eywa wanted them to live, he couldn’t refuse the Great Mother.
He didn’t have to be happy about it.
That was not what was asked of him and which, he was grateful for Mo’at’s patience.
“Jakesully’s Ikran’s descended, half a mile ahead,” Ka’ani announced.
Tsu’tey nodded tightly, quashing the visible anger on his face and Pa’li moved ahead quickly through the dense forests.
Up ahead, the distinct smell of metal and…fuel was familiar, and the distant quiet of voices. Sky people's voices and the screech of the Ikran, a distant outline showed the metal box, as Graceaugustine had said.
Then a sharp sound of pain was unmistakable.
He clicked his tongue, his hand coming to his bow before they punctured through the last line of trees to see a odd sight of a Dreamwalker, Normspellman who had visited Hometree once, beside an unfamiliar female sky person, a prone form face down on a blanket but the Dreamwalker had a hold of a familiar sky person.
Graceaugustine.
The presence of Atokirina was not unmissed, hovering on the still form of another bloodied sky person, Jake’s human form, but also they floated around Grace as well which he took more notice off
He had been glad to have seen her when she had returned, he couldn’t deny it was unsettling to see her like this. Human. Sky person. He much preferred her Na’vi Dreamwalker. That was familiar.
The Dreamwalker grasped the mask and removed it, all time for Graceaugustine to wrench up into the grass with an echoing cry of pain, but most of what was rejected from her body was red with blood.
“Don’t shoot!” the sky woman called, her hands up but Tsu’tey paid her no heed, if they were to kill them; they could have easily done without them even knowing.
“It’s okay, Trudy. Grace said they might come.” Normspellman said, holding the mask back to Graceaugustine’s face, her breaths fast inside and barely conscious as she lay against his body; so small in comparison.
Tsu’tey slipped off the Pa’li with confidence and wasn’t the only one as his people came to examine the area, two warriors going to check the metal box to see if there was anything of concern about.
“Mo’at allows their care. We will take them to The Tree of Souls to her.” He spoke.
“Oh, okay but you must be gentle. Their bodies are too weak for anything less.”
“Tsu’tey?” the voice was soft through the mask was slipped on properly onto Graceaugustine’s. Blood still upon her lips underneath as her eyes fluttered open. “You came.” Her language switched to Na’vi but to hear her voice in such a tongue brought back the familiarity of lost times. He hated how much he had missed that; when she had been his teacher… how much of a mother she was.
Tsu’tey forced himself closer to the other Dreamwalker, but focused to her mostly.
“It was by Tsahìk’s wishes,” he replied, “You do not have long if your belly fills with blood.” He was no fool of what meaning it portrayed and not to mention, sky people were small and didn’t have as much blood in them. Too late for conventional healing so he trusted Mo’at had a method to salvage Graceaugustine from meeting the Great Mother so soon.
Graceaugustine nodded airily without much thought. Tsu’tey nodded his chin towards the Dreamwalker. “Take that ahead. Ka’ani, you will take the… jakesully.” The name was hard to speak with the weight of the man’s actions upon it. He would rather leave a traitor to die but…the Tsahìk was clear in her interpretation of Eywa. An ever-present reminder for himself he had to keep echoing.
With a nod, the young warrior approached the Ikran first but Tsu’tey made his move, “You will take him.” Nodding to the other limp body. “We will not touch him.”
“Of-of course.” Normspellman hesitated, not sure if to let Graceaugustine go or not but Tsu’tey was not patient for him to decide. Glad to some degree sky people were small, Graceaugustine was easy to pick up like she was simply a child.
The cry from her lips at the movement made him wince but she went limp in his arms. The rise and fall of her chest accompanied by the slight fog against the clear of her mask was the indicator she was alive but Tsy’tey was careful to clamber back onto the Pa’li and lead the way through back.
-
Neytiri helped her mother as she stripped Grace’s Dreamwalker of clothes in silence until the empty shell was bare and laid upon the roots, her queue intertwined ready for what her mother planned with Great Mother but she couldn’t help but feel the conflict that rose as she watched Tsu’tey return at the outskirts where the clan was seated ready with some trepidation. Her mother was quick to meet them, directing them off to strip away unnecessary clothes.
Her eyes followed as Ka’ani came with Jake’s…Dreamwalker and she directed him to set him down. She removed the loincloth and cummerbund from his ribs and finally, his knife holster and set that aside, but she found it hard to look at him without the sense of overwhelming guilt and pain that settled beside each heartbeat.
She loved him and yet… she almost hated the sight of him. He had tricked her, despite her hope that he was not one of the Sky people wanting to hurt them or take from them… and he had wanted to learn and be part of the people. To be with her.
He had lied.
Her people had suffered for it. Many were lost and buried now. Once her sister… now her father. But she was thankful for her mother and that she had lived. She couldn’t take the mantle of Tsahìk so soon.
The guilt of loss, and she had a part to play in the encouragement; to be swept up into his play that she had willingly mated with him. A union approved by Eywa herself. She didn’t doubt the Great Mother’s approval but only her own …but would the Great Mother allow for spiritual separation if she prayed for it? A mate of a traitor was a heavy weight to bear as well but… she would choose her people. Not after what happened. They needed her.
Her mother returned swiftly.
“Go sit by Grace. She will need your guidance.” Mo’at spoke.
Grateful, Neytiri moved though her eyes followed as Tsu’tey walked with the small, human form of Grace, a sight unfamiliar but she was glad to see he held her with reverence despite her human body.
The other Dreamwalker had returned, this time carrying a different sky form—Jake—but Neytiri couldn’t bring herself to look at him before she helped set Grace down in front of her Dreamwalker and facing inwards towards the three of the great mother.
Grace’s eyes flickered open, hardly focused though she could still see the spark of curiosity that always lay within them.
Her eyes followed her near-bare body, though she could see Grace’s wound was somewhat covered; her mother’s sticky white paste worked wonders to keep such a wound closed but it wasn’t meant for this injury. She recognised the bullet wounds like she had seen through her sister’s body, much like the healed scar along the upper side of Grace’s Dreamwalker’s hip.
There was other bruising now around it but the west in comparison, she could see the pale pink flesh of Jake’s back to see red and purple building covering most of his mid-body, thin legs that looked…odd in comparison to the rest of his body but she turned her eyes away from him to focus her attention back, kneeling beside the form, plants coming to intertwine over all four bodies laid before the Great Mother.
“It’s time,” Mo’at spoke, her eyes following the descent of Atokirina that drifted down, coming to touch upon them.
Neytiri breathed, allowing herself to connect her kuru in to aid in prayer.
-
Jake felt like he was out of sync as he laid upon something soft, a low…rhythmic thumping through his mind but he found himself drawn into it like a song of bass. Mo’at’s voice a distance away as well as the voices of the clan but it felt…warm.
Peaceful.
It was almost like a heartbeat. Thumping through his brain, a warm tightness of plants seemed to envelop him like a blanket would on a cold night.
Like he was being lulled to sleep but he knew if he let himself go, he would die. He wasn’t ready for that…
It wasn’t dark, but it felt like he was floating, much like how the dream hunt had started and he found himself sinking back to that experience… feeling like he was flying upon a banshee but his shadow was wrong. No… not wrong. Different. Huge wings that lay upon an ashy wasteland. Orange and black. A Toruk. He could almost feel the air against his winds… but it went beyond that as the memory faded to darkness, the shimmy of light that was all too familiar of the link to waking up that clouded out his senses until he found himself gently moving through the darkness that swiftly followed
The beat thumped soundlessly, through the darkness was a dim light that grew before he found himself standing in Hometree.
Rationally, Jake knew it wasn’t the real thing but he felt the warmth and love for it because…it had become home.
He was not alone, Jake realised as he saw Eytukan standing there by the spiral, Atan and many other fallen Omatikaya too… but he held the Olo'eyktan stare if only for a moment before there was the same glimmer of the Toruk Shadow behind him but Jake couldn’t turn in time, but Eytukan’s eyes widened and flatten back before Jake felt the sense of light change before he was pulled back into the white shimmy of light behind him.
Then darkness.
But the sounds seemed to resonate now, still a beating heart but now, it all sounded different. Louder with each beat.
“Jakesully?”
He felt his ear twitch at the closeness, and a warmth to spread to his shoulder before he realised that he was being touched. His breath came out easy and the pain he had was…gone.
Relief.
Jake found himself taking a few heavy breaths before finding the strength to open his eyes, straight into the concerned eyes of Mo’at. She seemed to relax, as he looked around, his eyes falling upon his…human body but he found himself staring as he realised Grace had not moved; neither human nor avatar.
“Grace?” He croaked, voice still rough from over a day without water. Mo’at and Neytiri also hovered beside her as the Atokirina twirled and danced away like little jellyfish. His heart sank with dread, staring at her avatar intently in some desperate hope that she could pass through.… his heart beat faster until…
Grace’s eyes snapped open.

Manga scanning: a practical example
Lately I've been getting a lot of people asking questions about how to scan and subtitle. And it's kinda hit me: there aren't a lot of visible, accessible resources for this, are there? As time winds by, the masters of these arts have moved on and vanished from the internet. So for posterity, I want to talk about my own work process. (Remember to save a backup of this post somewhere if you like it...)
Maybe someone else has already written this up better than me, but it's nice to infodump about the process regardless.
The book I'm scanning is Inazuma Eleven GO: Saikyou Senshu 100-nin Zukan. It was a magazine extra drawn by multiple artists, and to my knowledge it's never been rereleased in tankobon format. Which is a damn shame, because it's full of hilarious gags! Time to bring it back to the world. So, how do we start?
0) Tools and programs
Before anything else, ya gotta have a good, clean scanner. My actual scanning is done with a basic 11x17 flatbed scanner with 1200dpi max. Default OS scanning programs usually suck, so I always download the scanner drivers and programs from the manufacturer's site!!
Other physical requirements are a microwave and some black paper. The digital steps are all done in Photoshop and XNView.
1) Scan the cover
Tumblr media
For scan settings, I default to 600dpi PNG. I used to scan things at 200/300dpi, and while this is quicker and more economical, it's not nearly as crisp! It can also cause some weird color banding, due to some scientific phenomenon that still confuses me! Basically, if a scan looks stripey, change the DPI. It's much better to work at higher resolutions and then shrink it down later. I don't have to fret over 100mb+ raw images anymore because I have plenty of external storage! Yippee!!
Tumblr media
Before doing anything else, I scan the cover while it's still in the best possible condition. Obviously, opening the book too far will cause creasing near the spine.
Since my edition was a well-loved secondhand copy, there is a LOT of creasing. But I don't feel like spending 3k yen to get a mint copy that I'm just gonna rip apart anyway, so this is where Photoshop comes in!
2) Retouching cover damage
Fortunately, there isn't any color fading to deal with here. The majority of these imperfections were touched up with Content Aware Fill. It's a very powerful tool that assumes what the selected pixels *should* look like based on the surrounding pixels. Use the Lasso or Magic Wand to select the imperfections, and try to avoid selecting pixels you don't want fixed. Content Aware works best on small spots, so you kinda have to break it up by color blocks, but it's still a million times faster and way less depressing. Seriously, cleaning and typesetting let my mind wander too much.
I currently have two Actions shortcuts to make this process even faster:
1) regular Content Aware Fill
2) Expand by 5px > Content Aware Fill > Deselect
Tumblr media
When Content Aware fails, this is when I have to go manual. Clone Stamp is my best friend ever. Carefully select a source with the Alt key, line up the dots over the touchup area (toggle Enter for better viewing), and keep brushing! This can be painstaking, but man, I love seeing and comparing the finished result.
Healing Brush is helpful when you have to clone a pattern but the color is different. It'll preserve the source pattern but adjust the lighting to match the surrounding pixels. It's a lot more finicky and will blur colors *too* much sometimes, especially near borders. This tool's really better on photographs, but it still comes in handy.
(I hear that Patch combines the functionality of these two! I wanna try it out next time...)
When Healing Brush can't blend colors well enough, using Clone Stamp in combination with Dodge (lighten) or Burn (darken), with strength adjusted accordingly, is the next best thing. Burn is GREAT on lines that aren't quite black enough! This technique works wonders when touching up gutter shadows especially. I will spend an exorbitant amount of time on retouching if it means I don't have to rip apart my nice books (that being said, it's important to really gauge whether it's worth retouching in the first place! I waste too much of my time on tiny details that nobody else cares about!!)
Tumblr media
If being able to see the printer dots bothers you, there's an easy fix: the Surface Blur filter. This is one I've only discovered recently and I'm still playing around with it. On one hand, it gets rid of the tiny white dots and can make scan images look absolutely magnificent. On the other hand, it has some trouble preserving sharp lines and small highlights. Since I don't like altering the original image too much, the scans I post aren't usually blurred -- but it's something you can try out at home!
Tumblr media
Hot damn! Look at the difference! Look at my boy Tenma! You'd hardly guess the condition the original is in!
Note that the final version does not have all the creases removed. At this point I had already spent a couple of hours retouching and decided nobody else was gonna care THAT much about the peripheral damage. If you do care that much, feel free to spend *your* time perfecting this.
3) Melt
Now that the cover's scanned... it's time to toss the book in the microwave!
vimeo
(Pictured is a *different* book, but you get the picture.)
No, seriously. Microwaving is the easiest way to warm up the glue enough to tear the pages out. Or more accurately, gently tug on the pages till they separate from the rest of the bunch. I start from the front cover and tease the pages out one by one. On thicker books, I'll alternate between front and back covers.
I set the initial heating count to 30-50 seconds, and sometimes I turn down the power level if I'm feeling apprehensive. Really gotta play it by ear depending on the book’s size and condition. After tearing out a couple dozen pages, the glue gets cool again and the pages start to resist again. Continuing like this results in the paper tearing!! This is when I chuck the book back in for another 10-15 seconds.
It's a little scary at first, but the toner on the pages heats up too! It doesn't bleed and it shouldn't be *too* hot to the touch though. So it's just something I've had to get used to.
This particular book kinda smelled when I heated it up! I blame either the paper quality or, y'know, being secondhand and maybe not being stored in perfect condition. But the stink was fortunately temporary.
Some people prefer ironing the spine (with a towel over it), but IMO that's more precarious and time-consuming. Maybe it works better for the middle pages though...? Worth trying out someday.
You could just slice out the pages with a knife or something, but with melting, it's possible to rebind the pages later! This is another thing I haven't done myself yet, but I'm excited to try it out with a nice archival glue. I'll update with the results eventually.
Tumblr media
So, with the "how" out of the way, "why" would you take apart a book in the first place!? It still feels a little sacrilegious. But scanning pages one at a time gets you the best possible results.
It eliminates three major issues:
1) Gutter shadow
As mentioned before, shadows at the "gutter" (the inside spine) naturally happen because the page isn't lying flat there. It looks bad. And it takes a whole lot of work to retouch.
2) Angled pages
The cousin to gutter shadow, angled pages happen when the spine is a leeeetle more open/closed at the bottom/top. So with a spread, you've got the left page at -1 degree and the right page at .5 degree. Both of these pages are going to have things cut off when they're cropped. And it's going to look very weird when you're flipping through pages and have slightly alternating angles. Rotating these pages so that they're at the same angle is a lot more trouble.
It's really hard to keep the spine open exactly the same way for an entire book! The weight of the scan lid can throw off careful positioning anyway!
3) See-through pages
Manga in Japan is CHEAP and is not printed on the best paper possible. If you have the pages all bundled together, you can see large splotches of black or white from the spread that's behind the page being scanned. Leveling the image can fix this, but it comes at the cost of destroying midtones. Which is to say, any gray in the image becomes off-white or almost-black.
I hope you're beginning to understand how much effort and technical detail goes into the scans you enjoy.
4) Scanning
Same scan settings as the cover (600dpi PNG). I always scan in color, even for grayscale images. And I don't trust the auto settings enough to let the machine fiddle with colors and cropping.
You know how scanners have a little arrow at the corner saying "align here"? Don't do that. The ones I've worked with like to shave off a few millimeters from the edge because they assume there's a margin anyway. So I place my documents about 1cm AWAY from the edge just to make sure the whole page is scanned in. This inevitably causes some slight rotation, which will be fixed later.
Tumblr media
A new technique I've learned to reduce the effects of aforementioned see-through pages: use a black background! The toner blends in with the dark backing. This reduces the luminosity of the whites, but that's something that can easily be fixed via leveling later. I do not have black paper around the house, so I resorted to fabric.
Tumblr media
For comparison, here's the first page scanned with both a white and a black background. Note that white is slightly brighter, but there are some weird shadowy lines in the background. If you look really hard, the line goes through the screentone on Tenma's hair! Maybe it's excessive, but these tiny details can be weirdly distracting.
This book doesn't have page numbers, so I had to be extra cautious about missing pages (or accidentally dropping the stack)!
5) Leveling
Typically this step is something I leave for last, but since it significantly reduces file size, that's going to make the next steps easier.
So I've mentioned leveling before. But what is it?
Essentially, Levels make black *blacker* and white *whiter*. This is one very easy step to make pages look SO much better.
Tumblr media
Switching over to XNView now, I'm setting these pages to about 40-220. Usually this would be a bit too heavy -- this could easily erase something light or turn something dark into pure black. But in this instance, the high dpi means individual screentone dots are visible and any grays are pretty well preserved anyway. So let it rip! XNView batch processing can run through all selected pages all at once and save the leveled copies to a new folder.
Tumblr media
There's a ton of dust left still. Leveling gets a *lot* of it, but again, the paper quality is not great in the first place so it's kind of unavoidable. Resizing and cleaning the page later will help somewhat.
6) Rotate
This is the one step I do fully manually. I haven't had much luck with auto deskew/crop before, nor have I tried any different methods for it recently. Please tell me if there's a better way of doing this step that won't sacrifice border pixels.
Tumblr media
Anyway, since I scanned slightly away from the edges earlier, the resulting digital image is slightly rotated at a random angle! For some ungodly reason, Photoshop doesn't have a shortcut for custom rotation, nor can you really set an action for it. XNView once again comes in clutch here. The basic steps are:
5a) Click and drag to create a bounding box. This will be used as a guideline to check whether the digital image is actually upright.
5b) Shift-O and test out values from -3 to 3. Ctrl-Z and repeat until it's just right.
After a while, you get a hang for approximate values, but "just right" means getting within .05 of a degree!! Even the untrained eye can tell when something's off by a mite.
5c) Adjust the bounding box's borders to the edges. If the box is aligned to one corner and the adjacent corners *aren't* aligned too, that means you have to rotate until all four corners are aligned. Then crop and save and move onto the next one!
7) Align
This is a new step I've never done before! Given the number and size of pages I'm working with here, I had to think and plan out this process in advance for once. Basically, instead of cropping and resizing each individual file, I load them all in at once so that they're perfectly aligned with each other. This is gonna require a lot of Photoshop automation.
Tumblr media
First off, I go to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack. There are four types of pages here: 1 comic on the left, 1 comic on the right, 2 comics on the left, and 2 comics on the right. This process will have to be repeated for each type so that the automation doesn't get confused. Then we check the "Align Source Images" box and let the process run... for a while.
So now I have a single file with one layer for each of the pages, and the comics themselves are all nicely aligned! Yahoo! The edges are mismatched though, so it's time to crop again. There's gonna be some cutoff but that's acceptable in this instance since I just care about the small comics. If I was doing bigger, full-page manga, I'd probably *add* some margin after cropping.
Tumblr media
The pages are approximately a 5:8 ratio, so I've decided to crop these down to 2550 x 4080. To make sure that the comics are at the same distance from the margin regardless of page type, I'm using Guides to roughly estimate the comic positions after cropping. I want them to end up at about 70px and 100px from the horizontal and vertical margins respectively. I could also change the size of the canvas instead of cropping if I really wanted to.
Tumblr media
Once I'm satisfied with the cropping, I use the Timeline/Animations window to flip through (at about 0.5 seconds) and check that all of the layers look right. There are a couple tears and visible background instances which are quickly fixed with Content Aware Fill and Clone Stamp. Since the background's black, I even had to temporarily change the Photoshop interface color lighter so that I could detect the imperfections better.
Then at last I go to File > Scripts > Export Layers to Files and... wait for a while again. Now we have separate files! And now I have to repeat these steps all over again for the three other page types!
Tumblr media
Lastly, it's time to rename the resulting files in order. I actually screwed up on this step. Photoshop exported all the files *backwards*, which gave me file names like "PSexp0025-InaGo01". This is an issue because it makes batch-renaming via XNView a whole lot harder!! Photoshop automatically adds a numbered prefix to all the auto-exported files, and XNView can't remove wildcards from filenames. The result is weirdly staggered out-of-ordered files. It took some careful manual work to fix this, but at long last, we have a whole folder of 90 beautiful pages!
8) Translate (FINALLY)
You see how long it took to get here!? This took at least six hours for 90 pages. After all that work with the raws, finally I can do something with them!
Guess what! If you have a digital edition, you can skip all of these steps! Instant gratification for five bucks! Buy digital editions when you can and give your money directly to the author!!
Anyway, further stages may be discussed in another post once we get around to them. Lassoing translators and typesetters is its own struggle. I hope you learned something new from this post!

Snively fic snippet! It's been a while so I thought I'd post something. I have so many little scenes that need beginnings or ends (or middles!) written before I can post. Yeesh. This one is short. It takes place when Snively is running the city post Doomsday. The Freedom Fighters manage to escape capture (not really a spoiler lol), leaving Snively unconscious and rained on by the sprinklers in a destroyed room.
Snively scrunched his nose, eyes closed. Water fell onto his face.
I wasn't outside, was I? I must have been. It's raining.
His mind drifted backwards through the years.
His feet were sore, his shoulders aching from the straps of his backpack. Five miles ago, he'd been unceremoniously booted from a hover truck. The dicey-looking driver saying: Kid, you ain't pay me enough to get any closer to the border. The animals might eat me alive.
Hogwash and swill. Snively knew the Mobians wouldn't eat him. Shoot him, maybe. But at least that was quick.
The teenage boy stopped to drop his pack, stretching his back with a moan. He was in the midst of a grassy field, edged by enormous pines. He squinted upwards into a grey sky. Gentle mist was turning to harder droplets. He picked up the pack, hurrying for the shelter of the trees. By the time he reached them, he was panting for breath, his hair plastered to his forehead.
He shivered from the damp, stopping again to rest. According to Father's military maps, through this patch of forest was an Overlander outpost. It was attended by scumbag types just itching to put holes into any furbearer that set foot over the border.
They might put a hole in you too. Or use you for some sick entertainment...
Snively brushed away his wet bangs. His nose ran over his lips. He wiped it with a soggy sweater sleeve.
Maybe... Maybe I should head back. I've only five years before I go to Uni. Only five years to live with Father...
Five years sounded like five lifetimes. He bit his suddenly trembling lip, hiccuping a pathetic little cry. He frowned and wiped away more snot. Stop it. Don't be what Father says. Sniveling bastard.
What would Julian think about him standing here like a shivering whelp, too scared to walk onward?
Because Julian was alive. And he was Snively's beacon, guiding him through Overlander territory - his homelands - and across the border where the talking fleabags roamed and ruled.
He situated the pack again, feeling a few pelting drops that made it through the pine canopy. He shook water from his eyes, set his jaw.
Julian's alive. I will contact him. I will go to him. I will not crawl back to Father. I will not fail!
With the trees rustling above, and the rain falling harder, the young boy walked to the outpost.
-----
He frowned with his eyes still closed, the patter of raindrops making his cheeks numb. Something in the forest had changed. He heard a steady crackle, a hiss. A rattling snake?
Don't make a sudden movement. He inched one eye open, puzzled to see flat gray above him. A sheet of storm clouds - no. He became aware of the smell of burning electronics.
He sat up, grimacing at a sharp pain in the side of his head. A touching hand came away wet with watery blood. The overhead sprinklers were raining on the sparking and smoking room. He carefully stood, tottering dizzily. His Securitybots stood on either side of him.
"Sir. What is your order?"
Snively headed for the exit, the doors twisted and destroyed by the wretched animals. "Follow and guard. The Freedom Fighters might still be around."
Before leaving, he hit a button by the entrance to activate the extinguishing foam. Normally, the doors would shut and seal the room, leading to a suffocating situation for anyone trapped inside. There were oxygen masks by the door just for that purpose.
He took the elevator up to the Command Center. Exiting with his pistol drawn and the robots ahead and behind. He pressed his fingertip to the scanner on the Command Room doors. The vast space stretched out before him.
Empty. No beasts. They had probably retreated. Regrouping, planning their next move now that they'd found him alive.
"Idiots," he growled aloud. "Yes, you thought...just like Julian...that poor stupid Snively was snuffed out like an irksome mosquito. That it would be that easy."
He stalked to the throne to access the damage. Just like old times.
At least, that's what the Freedom Fighters thought.

I dragged my suitcase along the long straight road towards the bus station. I arrived in good time and made my way past numerous taxis drivers who hustled for business. With every step which I took away from them, the price seemed to decrease. I walked around the car park for a few minutes looking at the destination placards on the coaches. One of the drivers asked me where I was going. I replied, “the airport” and he pointed me towards a small minibus with a placard which read ‘airport’ displayed in the window. I had confidence that this was the right airport because it’s the only international one in the country.
At 11am we set off towards the airport. Somewhere along the road we were cut up by a driver in a smart car. We ended up overtaking him, before he cut in front of us again and sped off down the road, in doing so, he gave our driver a mighty glare. The driving in the Balkans is very questionable.
Within 35 minutes, we arrived at the airport. I had to collect my boarding pass from the check-in counter because Tirana airport does not have the technology to read digital boarding passes yet. I collected my pass and made my way to the security check. All of my luggage got pulled off to one side and they put my suitcase through the scanner again. A security officer then aggressively searched my suitcase, pulling everything apart in the process. Eventually, he found what he was looking for, my guitar capo. He looked at it with intrigue and asked me what it was. I explained that it is a guitar capo, strumming an air guitar in the process. The Albanian gentleman beside me explained to the officer in Albanian what it was and also began to play the air guitar. Then, the gentleman next to him joined in. It must have been a funny site, watching three men play the air guitar during a security check. I was allowed to keep the capo and was then firmly told to “take my suitcase and go!” Without any hesitation, I made my way to border control. They scanned my passport electronically and waved me through.
I stopped for food before boarding my flight and spent my last €15 on a panini, crisps and a coffee. It was very expensive! After a short wait, I boarded my flight. The flight was pleasant and took just under 3 hours. As I walked through the airport, I struck up conversation with an Albanian man who asked me what I thought of Albania. I expressed my satisfaction to which he was pleased.
Albania is a fascinating country, I enjoying exploring the bunkers and learning about the history. The sunsets in Durrës are spectacular and I appreciate even more how special this region of the world is. I will return to Albania someday, and it will be to experience the beaches in the south of the country, an area known as the Albanian Riviera, but for now, there are other countries to explore.

Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (402): Sun 23rd Apr 2023
Idea for a heckle put-down if I ever try stand up: If you don’t shut up I’m going to make your face bloodier than the abortion your mother wishes she could have afforded
Another taxi ride to work today because I can’t get in touch with the mechanic to fix the bike. The driver did actually show up on time today but fuck me he was weird. He spoke like his voice box had been riddled by smoking and also he chuckled warily after every fucking thing he said 90% of which I couldn’t make out anyway. During the morning meeting the health and safety officer was given the floor to speak his mind in the importance of health and safety, something he’s been doing a lot more lately. This guy really loves health and safety, like he LOVES it. He has the delivery of a childrens tv presenter and he always looks like he gets some sort of almost sexual gratification out of giving people tips on how to remain safe at work. Mercifully I got sent down to shipping straight away so didn’t have to put up with any stowing bullshit today. Once again the lass in charge said to me “You’re trained to use the scanners aren’t you?” and for the 785th consecutive time I shook my head and said “Nope”. The lass sent me to my station and made no attempt to organise for me to be trained in the scanners ensuring that she will ask me if I’ve been trained in them for a 786th time. Half way through the shift the conveyor belt stopped working and no parcels were being sent down so I decided to go over to the lass and ask her if she fancied training me on the scanners since there was no work to be done anything. And so began the rigorous, intense, highly important training and five long minutes after starting the training I was declared fully trained. Holy fuck I can’t believe it. Five minutes. Six months they’ve been unable to set up some “training” (which was basically just showing me which buttons to press before scanning which package / trolley and this whole time it only would have taken five minutes! The same amount of time it would have taken me to work out what the twist was going to be in a Shayamalan film! Why they didn’t just make time to train me themselves is anyones guess. I spent the rest of the day wandering around the stow section loading boxes into trolleys and scanning them off which is a pretty sweet way to get paid for doing as close to Jack shit as possible. While I was “working” I started thinking about other stuff I want to cross off my bucket list. One thing I want to do is actually a three parter. I want to go to visit Baltimore in order to visit the house Edgar Allan Poe lived in, his grave and the pub where he was last seen alive. This will be quite tricky to organise because there are no travel agents that organise flights from Newcastle to Baltimore (bloody Brexit!). If I were to do this then I would probably need to go from Newcastle to London, then London to Paris, then Paris to Amsterdam, then Amsterdam to New York, then New York back to Amsterdam again then finally Amsterdam to Baltimore. I might have also found a way to start making the most out of my trips abroad. This year I plan on beginning to follow American football. Originally I had the Denver Broncos in mind to follow as their logo is the nicest and will look the best in tattoo form should I choose to get one some day. Sadly I’ve looked up things to do in Denver should I choose to travel there to see one of their games and it’s not as rife with adventure as LA was. I think the most exciting thing that happens in Denver is that every Thursday the local library gives away free cupcakes if it’s not raining. So what I might do instead is start following the Baltimore Ravens because not only would going to see one of their home games also give me a reason to go to see Poe’s famous landmarks but the team are named after Edgar Allan Poe ffs duh!

Do you care less about the maintenance of your Windows Dell computer an individual have could easily do it then? You might care less but happen care about Microsoft Windows maintenance that are on your Dell computer if you care about its functionality, long life, performance, and security. Information discusses how one can can do Microsoft Windows maintenance in the Dell computer without spending much as well as efforts. But now to the thing. Downloading is not a big thing today. hard disk sentinel Activation Code like dsl or cable limit your download time. This can be the most crucial thing because you want the game as fast as possible and fresh games possess a lot of giga bytes to see. Many users are attached to overclocking the CPU on the computer. However the outer frequency of computer has been improved, hard disk sentinel disk appears with an untenable situation of problems, such as frequent blue screen, seriously heated disk, and logic or physical broken courses. Here, I would like to let you some facts of personal pc. IDE interface of hard disk is dependent on the PCI. If rate of recurrence of PCI is being increased, it might bring about many unstable results. It's very totally distinct from memory. That works by mechanical structure. Therefore, since the increasing of frequency, some disks lost data, even worse, it leads to data permanent damage. 12. Your current products are using the FAT32 file system, don't make any partitions exceeding 32 Gigabytes. If your disk is large and you have to a involving partitions, please note that hand calculators use considerably 3 primary partitions (although the common usage for you to have just one) and also an extended partition, and then within the extended partition you can set any amount of partitions needed, a great deal the connected with available drive letters can be of 26 in total. However, an outside hard drive can be attached to both varieties of computers. They are usually connected by USB or fire wire. What is the Best Driver Software?
A many individuals are getting private car with driver on to the possibility that computerized programming can save you time, energy and truly a migraine. Among those bits of programming are Driver Scanners that look at your framework for dated, or broken drivers that need supplanting. In addition to the fact that they filter, however they'll likewise download and introduce them for you.
Refreshing gadget drivers can be a genuine agony to physically do. That is the reason these product titles are so well known nowadays. Since drivers are so buggy, and are refreshed habitually, keeping on top of all the most recent, and basic updates is an exceptionally overwhelming undertaking. How could you need to invest energy fixing your PC, when you could be on it partaking in the most recent game, or talking with your closest companion?
That is the reason I like programming like this. It makes my life more straightforward, and permits me to get things done on my PC without stressing over its upkeep. What can be as similarly testing in any case, is picking which programming to go with.
While I can't say conclusively which driver checking programming is awesome, what I can do is give you a few hints on what also search for while thinking about buying this sort of program.
Size of Data set:
A decent driver scanner will tell you precisely, or give a good guess, of the number of drivers it that backings. Many just help a little piece, in the lower thousands, while some can arrive at up to the many thousands. There are such countless makes and models out there, that the greater the information base, the more probable the scanner will uphold the drivers you want.
Driver Reflecting:
Driver Reflecting is where the checking programming tracks down a particular driver, and afterward the distributers of the item save that driver on their site for use in downloading.
This can be a troublesome element to find, however I view it as obligatory. On the off chance that a piece of equipment is particularly old, the first makers probably won't have the drivers on their site. So on the off chance that you can't find the driver explicitly from the first creators, then a driver program without reflecting will likewise make some intense memories tracking down the right driver.
How Frequently The Program Updates:
Since drivers are continually being refreshed, it's critical that your driver programming is refreshing with it. Most projects will utilize an on line data set to keep all the data about which driver renditions are right now the most modern. The recurrence of how frequently this data set is refreshed is significant in ensuring your PC is running at its max operation. My suggestion is too search for scanners that update their information base day to day.
Framework Similarity:
Obviously this is essential to consider in light of the fact that you believe the product should have the option to run on your form of working framework. What some don't consider, nonetheless, is its utilization on a different machine. It's normal for individuals to have more than one PC in their family nowadays, and buying a permit to utilize programming works everything out such that you can utilize that equivalent driver scanner on every framework. Consider assuming you have different working frameworks on various machines, that the scanner will chip away at each prior to purchasing full adaptations so you can capitalize on it.
Easy to understand:
I think most driver examining programming falls under this classification, yet it's still great to ponder while attempting to conclude what program to go with. You would rather not be perusing manuals to make the program ready. That nullifies the point of getting a scanner in any case! So take a gander at screen captures of the application in real life and check whether it looks simple to utilize.
Specialized Help:
A strong specialized help is required for each piece of programming, driver filtering etc. Ensure there is an email address, telephone number, and bookmark the page so that you'll constantly have the option to contact the designers assuming you run into any issues. Most driver scanners are accessible as shareware, meaning you can try out a portion of its highlights for nothing private car with driver prior to pursuing the last choice to purchase and open the full program.

According to Silverlight, they have a new version of the software, 8.0, that is more stable and has more features. I was then able to install the Silverlight upgrade 6.6 and it recognized the scanner. I had to save the drivers as a folder, open it and find the install.exe inside one of the sub-folders. Re-installing them cannot be done from the set-up.exe file. The remedy was to uninstall the drivers and software (thank you photolady for the link). To make matters worse, Silverlight 6.5 (which ships with the Plustek) and the upgrade, 6.6, can be unstable with Windows 10. The drivers for the Plustek are quirky with a Windows 10 64bit system. The software, Silverlight wouldn't recognize the driver and would give me an error that there wasn't a film scanner connected.Īfter extensive searching on both Silverlight and Plustek web sites, I was able to piece this together from the archives. Lide 30 scanner, a Lide 210, that has 64 bit drivers. I checked the Canon site, and emailed their support people, they agreed the problem is no drivers, and put my request in the queue for making them, they also gave me a reduced price on a replacement scanner, of about the same size and portability as the Does Widows 8 support scanners, and what drivers will work?ĭo I have to wait for support to catch up to get plug and play back? Are drivers for scanners compatible with other scanners? I have to do more research, if someone can point the direction of research that would be helpful. I do not plan on throwing out the scanner, I do have an Xp machine that just has a fix using restore console that needs to be done to it, it would be nice to get Windows 8 to use the scanner too.
CANON LIDE 20 DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 8 64 BIT HOW TO
I do not know how to set up a Xp sp3 environment that will accept the install of that driver as if it were running the thing as 32bit. Window 8 will not recognize that driver because it is a 32bit driver. Will run (I think I set it to run as Xp sp3), but needs to find a driver which for a 32bit system is packaged as lide20lide30n670un676un1240uvst7031a_xpen.exe and was found at Canon. I tried to use 'Windows driver update/find driver' tools, none found. I have a CanoScan LiDE 30/N1240U scanner, that worked fine under Windows Xp sp3 (32bit), Canon has drivers for that OS, but not for Windows 8 RT (64bit).

I've exhausted all of my options to make this work.

If anyone knows what the problem with this is, please let me know. Once again, I'm using an HP Elitebook 8760W with a Validity VFM - 471 driver. There appears to be some kind of problem with Microsoft's biometric program and how it interacts on login with my Finger print reader. I then go to my usual pin based logon and login. I swipe my finger again - nothing happens. I then select the option to use the finger print to longon. I swipe my finger print across the reader again - nothing happens. I hit enter to go to the password screen. I try to scan my fingerprint on this screen - nothing happens. This page contains the driver installation download for Fingerprint Sensor in supported models (HP EliteBook 6930p) that are running a supported operating. I don't understand why I would be getting this message when I am setting it up to use the fingerprint scanner. I reboot my computer and I get an error message on the main screen that say that it is having trouble identifying me. Hello says I'm all setup for the next login. I'm also able to scan in my finger prints with no problem. Fingerprint sensor was working, but now not and Biometric devices not appear in device manager also. Here is some additional info on trying this driver to work with Microsoft Hello:Īfter the driver is loaded, I'm able to bring up the Windows Hello fingerprint setup program. Hello, I have hp EliteBook 8570w, I am using Win10 pro. I wish HP would step up to the plate and update their software!Īny help with the Validity 471 driver would be appreciated. Has anyone been able to make the biometrics fingerprint reader work with Windows hello in Windows 10? All I can surmise is that this driver is not totally compatible with Windows 10. I don't understand why the Windows 10 Hello program won't work with a valid biometrics driver. HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G2 Validity Fingerprint Driver 4.5.321.0 Rev.A This package contains the driver that enables the Synaptics (Validity) Fingerprint Sensor in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. All I want to do is be able to log on with my fingerprint reader. I really don't want to use the HP software. Still no love with the Simplepass program. I later tried to install the latest software with Windows compatibility mode.

When I upgraded I had to remove the HP Protecttools in order to do the upgrade. The HP SimplePass program does not work at all. I can get Windows Hello to read the initial fingerprints but when I reboot it refuses to recognize the fingerprint reader. I have a Validity 471 driver installed that seems to be recognized by Windows 10 and shows as active in the Device Mgr. I have a HP Elitebook 8760W which I recently upgraded from Windows 7 64 Pro to Windows 10 64 Pro.Īll went well except I can't get the fingerprint driver to work with either Windows Hello service or the HP SimplePass program.
