The Master citing Freedom as his goal was a great nod to the Sith code.
He's framing it as wanting to be able to simply live his life but that's not the truth of the Sith.
The Sith believe the force will free them, but not from persecution: from restraint, from holding back, from being lesser. They wish to use the force to free themselves of the rules of morality. To bend the world to their will, freedom to do what they please.

One thing I like about the Sith Code is that it reveals a core belief when you contrast it with the Jedi Code, specifically the way it’s written. The Sith codes uses a lot of me’s and my’s, showing that it’s a very selfish ideology. It doesn’t say that “Our Chains Are Broken” and not even “The Chains Are Broken” but “*My* Chains Are Broken”
The Jedi Code, by contrast, doesn’t even use pronouns. Like the Jedi, it’s very focused on something beyond the self. It doesn’t talk about what the speaker gains from their force abilities, but how the force is used to make the galaxy a much safer and more enlightened place.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion
Through passion, I gain strength
Through strength, I gain power
Through power, I gain victory
Through victory, my chains are broken
The Force shall set me free
one crazy and fucked up thing about screecher's reach is that after you watch it you realize that daal saying "give me strength" to the sith communicator was foreshadowing. strength is not normally associated with the light, it is actually a part of the sith code - "through strength i gain power," which ends up being the thesis of the short and it is HAUNTING in retrospect.

On one side, Star Wars has an Order of space Magic monks whose main mission is fighting for peace and justice in the galaxy. On the other, it has what is basically space nazis.
The anti-Jedi pro-Sith crowd baffles and scares me in equal messure.

Microcosm for how fascism has grown when not exposed to light, with a shortcut through Star Wars.
The creator of the Sith Code has outright said that he got inspiration from Mein Kampf. It is nigh dripping with fascist attitude.
It is written for the BAD GUYS. People who literally become monsters because they try to grasp and control everything around them. Even in the rare cases where it doesn't cause them to be physically changed (an issue I've come to have with Star Wars, but that's a tale for another time).
Fan response? "Cool, they just want to be free, we should all want that!"

*The Acolyte Episode 5 Spoilers*
I think it's funny that after so much of the fandom saying the Acolyte is anti-jedi and pro-sith the sith's point of view is literally just "the jedi oppress me cause I'm not allowed to murder whoever I want 🥺😡"

Lawyering through fandoms: Impossibility in contract law
When you become a Jedi, you have to give up all attachments as part of the Code. This includes romance as that is an attachment to your partner, which is why Anakin Skywalker kept his marriage to Padme Amidala a secret.
Under contract law, a party can raise an impossibility defense when an unforeseen event occurs after the contract is made which makes performance impossible. If this happens, impossibility can be used to excuse non-performance (basically, you don’t have to abide by the terms of the contract anymore).
Now, let’s say the Jedi Code is the contract you sign when you become a Jedi and the no-attachments rule is one of the terms. Well…Vader and the Empire destroyed the Jedi Order. Vader’s actions were unforeseeable since who the fuck expected Anakin to just wipe everyone out. Thus, we can say that anyone who signed up to be a Jedi no longer has to be bound by the Code since performance is impossible.
So, when this happens with Cal Kestis and Merrin:
Tumblr media
Cal is all good since he has an impossibility defense, just in case some Jedi veteran asshat sues him by claiming he’s gone against the Jedi Code. In fact, Cal even says that the Order is gone and he’s not bound to the Code anymore.
(There, I justified Merrical on a legal basis LOL)
