WHY was this modernized? What was the reasoning behind it? It doesn’t explain anything. If it took place in 1984 like it was supposed to, yeah, I totally would have gotten what was going on. Out of that context it just.....it did not fit, and set in the present day, you’ve got no sympathy for these characters. If you even are supposed to. But the book takes place in the 1984 Nicaraguan Revolution and that would have made everything make a LOT more sense. The girl was supposed to be part of an anti-war group and setting it in the present just makes her seem like a selfish American idiot. And we’re not given ANY context for what the guy has done, it just kind of alludes to shady business practices. So???? It also apparently inspired a Sonic Youth song which like----WHY MODERNIZE IT? What was the thinking there?

Stars at Noon (dir. Claire Denis) x VIFF 2022.
While American novelist Denis Johnson’s 1986 romantic political thriller very much took place during the 1984 Nicaraguan Revolution under Sandinista rule, Denis’ film adaptation is set during the pandemic with less specific geopolitical details and never mentions its country of origin by name. Things start as a steamy foreign romance before unspecified political troubles begin to escalate.
Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn play stranded lovers who are constantly having sweaty sex in the sweltering Central American heat for 137 minutes. It’s not entirely clear why these white foreigners find themselves in such dicey political turmoil before heading toward the Nicaraguan border for Costa Rica. Their plight unravels when we are forced to care about their hazy situations on the run from multiple governments.
Screening at the 2022 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations series at The Centre for Performing Arts on Oct. 8.

the "why have i been activated" line made me laugh my ass off more than anything. i feel this guy. even after the ultimate conditioning and reprogramming i would definitely also be like this. no personality, no soul, still complaining about having to wake up early every time i wake up early.
