the vampire armand really is such a good book — and occasionally hilarious on top of that; it's remarkable how it depicts armand's religious struggles and paints such a compelling portrait
anyway, two quotes two pages apart which encapsulate the humour, the lestat petty (and tragic) obsession, the existential despair, the raw drive to tell one's own story, and on top of that, beautiful writing
Anne Rice, The Vampire Armand, chp 16
i've read it in the library today & just wanted to share

" Ah is that what you are sir? You that can paint like Bellini or Mantegna. Who can read all words, and speak all tongues, who has love, love without end and patience to match it? A Monster! Is that it? A monster spreads the roof over our heads, and feeds us daily supper from the kitchen of the Gods. Oh indeed, a Monster!"
The Vampire Armand - Anne Rice - (Armand speaking about Marius.)

Armand *internally* : I need this man carnally. I need to step up my game and slowly lure him in. I need to be gentle, charming and seductive.
Armand *externally* : You're Magnus' bastard.
Armand *internally* : Nailed it.
