John Galliano Gives a Masterclass in Posing for new 'Artisanal Collection'

I was holding out for as long as I could to do a review on this show my babies—seeing Miley Cyrus in a gold, chain-link Margiela ensemble at the 2024 Grammys was enough for me to move quickly to watch this show—and the wait was well worth it in my opinion. The show, lasting 30 minutes, flew by so quickly that I didn't realize how engrossed I was in this collection. However, it wasn't the clothes that did it for me this time. It was both the models and productions dedication to Galliano's storytelling that made this exemplary. An ode to the Victorian era and porcelain dolls—with an appreciation for Paris' underground club scene—Galliano is able to show what happens when you give fashion a meaningful purpose.

The show opens with a Freddy Mercury-esque singer celebrating his independence from a lost love that he begs to never come back. The performance—dimly light and surrounded by other equally talented vocalist—immediately transported me back to my high school days, being in musical theater and getting to witness the kitschy 1966 show 'Cabaret' written by Joe Masteroff. A show centered around the nightclub scene in Berlin during the rise of the Nazi party. While Galliano doesn't include Nazi's in his show, he does channel a similar feeling in a short film that would lead us into the second act of the show. The film—shot in Black and white—depicts models adorning and tightening corsets in an overtly sexual manner, a backseat full of porcelain dolls, and an esoteric message that recognizes the pain and cost that comes from fashion, of course this is my interpretation of it. Eventually a running model would make their way from the screen and onto the runway; leading the procession of models as they begin to pose in such a theatrical way I couldn't help but again appreciate the drama of it all. The first model opening the show walks with so much poise and elegance while maintaining such steady eye contact with the audience that it begins to teeter the line to both alluring and unnerving; leaning into this beautifully, haunting atmospheric world that Galliano has created and inviting us into. After reaching the end of the street the model gives a smooth spin- posing as he arches his back slowly and gazes up carefully giving a tip of his Gatsby—or newsboy—cap and gives a small pointe of the toes, giving me war flashbacks to my dancing days. As the model makes his way inside the Pont d'Alexandre III—where this year's Margiela show is being held—the models who follow after him would soon capture that same theatrical way of posing. Revealing beautifully painted faces that are a callback to the porcelain dolls shown in the short film and walking in a fashion that could be declared robotic, yet it still was captivating. This becomes a lesson in posing. Galliano gives his models a personality and character that makes this show exciting to watch, but the models are just one part in this show. What helps sell this fantasy completely is the makeup designer Pat McGrath.

Pat McGrath has long been a titan in the beauty world and it seems like people often forget what, and who, she has helped create in the beauty community, but McGrath's love of makeup would initially stem from her mother who—as McGrath would say in a 2017 profile for the Guardian—would stand in front of the tv until she would be able to guess what her mother had done differently with her makeup. This would be the gift that McGrath would be given from her mother. A careful eye for beauty and visual aesthetics. It is that kind of dedication for her gift that has made her standout amongst her peers in the beauty world and giving her the opportunity to craft makeup looks for Rihanna and work with brands such as Versace, Prada and Dior back in their Galliano days from 1997 to 2011. Making this collaboration with Margiela a match made in heaven because both Galliano and McGrath seem to have a mutual understanding of what the other aims to achieve in their visions. However, even though McGrath is recognized in the beauty world for her achievements, it is this Margiela show that really allows her to be recognized by the mainstream media while at the same time helping me to realize how little appreciation Black trendsetters like Edward Enninful—ex-editor-in-chief of British Vogue— and Pat McGrath receive in the fashion and beauty world, both of them having come up in these industries together. To see though the notoriety that McGrath is receiving from this show and the porcelain doll look she has created and perfected is exactly what I would like to see.

All in all, Galliano might have created one of the best shows of the season in my opinion. While still being relatively knew to the fashion world, there is one thing that I will always be able to comprehend and that is storytelling. Galliano's mission to showcase the human form as a canvas and to be admired like artwork was successfully accomplished. His usage of different body types to communicate this is something that I actively look for in fashion shows. Much like Jacquemus 'Les Sculptures' attempted to do so, Galliano fully committed to the bit closing the show with the lovely Gwendoline Christie who would play Brienne of Tarth in the hit HBO show 'Game of Thrones'. After seeing her grace my screen, the ten's were most definitely awarded. But don't take my word for it, make sure that you watch the show for yourself below.

hello hello! I wanted to ask about the pre-raphaelite movement and actresses of this time, specifically because olivia rodrigo’s hair and makeup. it reminded me of that ethereal, fae-esque look that some actresses had, with thick flowy hair adorned with flowers and, of course, dramatic stage makeup. the dress is way off, but from the neck up i can see this. what id dont know is whether or not this is more of a gilded age thing or edwardian trend. thoughts?

I can see what you're saying, but I personally think it's a stretch. That fae look tends to be a little more Edwardian vs Gilded Age in my opinion, especially with actresses like Lily Elsie, Marie Doro, and Maude Fealy (I think your image might be Maude but I can't tell exactly Edit: It’s Florence Barker). While I love the works done by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, they're kind of the exact antithesis of Gilded Glamour. Overall, I like her look, it just doesn't tick the MET Gala boxes for me. How I feel about the MET Gala is it's a place to show off a look that honors the theme and doesn't look like your typical red carpet dress. Like if you told me this image was from the Grammys, I'd believe it.

Venus/Jupiter aspects in the natal chart...

Will make someone generally likable, charming, generous, and agreeable- especially if it's a conjunction, trine, or sextile you're working with. They'll be the person who might be incredibly popular or someone whose creativity [Venus] is magnified [Jupiter]. They might be very beautiful or well known for their good looks. However, throw a square to Chiron in the mix and this individual might have a hard time believing it. Since Chiron is the place in our chart where we wear our inner wound and a square indicates conflict, the pain to either of these planets has to do with beliefs, how we're educated, and the overall philosophy of life. One could perhaps have a lot of doubt as to whether they are truly attractive.  They could be bullied or hated for their attractiveness or popularity. On the other hand, Jupiter Squaring Chiron can make someone have severe wounds concerning their spiritual beliefs. It's common to see this aspect in charts of people who were forced into a particular belief system or religion. In addition, it's also an indicator of those who were abused by organized religion. Wherever he is, there's going to be a feeling that something is hidden. Deception will be a big factor or just naivete or idealism. More so if the aspects in this house are squares/oppositions. With the Trines and Conjunctions, the energy here can feel incredibly spiritual and binding. [Don't bust out the champagne yet, I said FEEL binding- it doesn't mean it necessarily will be]. Sorry. North Node/Neptune might make you two dream of each other or have this strange 6th sense concerning them and their energy. Taurus Suns, 11th House Virgos, Cancer/Capricorn 5th Houses, and Libra 7th Housers are typically the “Parent/Mom/Dad” of their friend groups.

Believe it or not, when it comes to “jealousy” over material things, it’s not Scorpio. Taurean/Leo placements [typically risings and Suns and moons] and especially underdeveloped will be the types to hate on you for having something [Usually clothing, car, house, etc] they want. Scorpios, though famous infamous for the jealousy stereotype, will usually show this trait only in romantic entanglements. This is because Scorpio is a water sign. Those with multiple planets in the 12th House can make excellent actors. This is because their personality is in a mutable house. They can morph and chameleonize themselves very easily. Superb for taking on multiple personalities for their craft.

Men with Mercury in Leo, Capricorn, or harmonious aspect to Pluto tend to have very deep voices. There’s also a soothing vibe to them as well. James Earl Jones, Liam Neeson, and Anthony Hopkins all have these placements. 

Contrary to popular opinion, Gemini isn’t the only sign that can be a “jack of all trades”. In fact, Libra Suns often fit in in various roles/professions. This has a lot to do with their diplomatic nature. Because they are often the peacemaker and a bit passive than their cousins, they are often welcomed in many different circles. This allows them to excel with networking/social climbing.

are the placement[s] I see the most in those who have a deep skepticism of Astrology. Their belief system can be rather rigid [Saturn] which makes it harder/ for them to be open minded [Jupiter] to other schools of thought.

Each Planet/Sign rules a day of the week. Whichever day you were born can inadvertently make you take on some of the traits of that sign, regardless of what your “big 3″ are.

I see these placements in the charts of those who enjoy anime, foreign film, or those who have a knack for languages [lot of trines to Jupiter is also an indicator of the latter.]

 [I’m not even kidding. I had this aspect with someone and my Priapus touched their Jupiter and I wanted to tear the kid’s clothes off. All my friends had no idea what I saw in him. In Virgo, someone clean cut, organized or well-groomed might tickle your fancy. In Libra, someone fashionable and sweet-natured. OLIVIA RODRIGO at the iHeart Radio Music Awards on March 22nd 2022 wearing VERSACE

I'm usually pretty complimentary of Olivia's looks. I do like her outfit for this except that it feels like it's missing something. I think this look could've been great if there was a necklace added.

As we gear up for the Grammy’s, I wasn’t expecting a lot of glamorous looks at this event. I think Olivia did a nice job of opting for a more casual red carpet look, but she is poorly accessorized.

I love her Ariana Grande-esque ponytail. I think it’s another hairstyle to add to her arsenal, she has a very particular vibe that she really has honed the last year.

I really like the leather leggings she wore, I think they’re such a cool piece and very in right now. The Versace runway was full of those leggings. I also like the purple dress she wore. It just felt very true to her style. So while not my favorite look, it was a solid appearance.

There are some that were posted in another ask, so here’s a link for that...but I dug around my saved pictures and found some other options. I don’t think anything can truly top Zendaya’s Met Gala look from 2018 and there are a couple Dior looks that are more literal. But the rest are more homages to armour pieces. And Paco Rabanne is a brand that is pretty consistent with doing chainmail-esque pieces, so I can always count on their shows to have some sort of piece that resembles armour.

Maude Apatow’s dress from yesterday kinda reminded me of Taylor’s dress from the 2019 golden globes, (over which I am literally forever deceased). I haven’t watched euphoria so I’m not too familiar with Maude but I thought she looked great!!

Oh I can definitely see that similarity! Her skirt has more flapper-esque tassel vibes but the off-shoulder detail, black, and mesh-like bodice are all similar.
