The Voyage of Charles Darwin (Die Reise des Charles Darwin)
youtube
In 1978, a BBC TV series about Charles Darwin's voyage on the HMS Beagle was shown on German television. On December 27th of 1831, the HMS Beagle left the port of Plymouth, England. The small brig was supposed to survey the coasts of South America and return to England via Australia and Africa.
Originally intended to last four years, the journey ultimately lasted almost five years. Also on board was the young theologian and amateur naturalist – 22-year-old Charles Darwin. He actually wanted to use the trip to get to know and describe the diversity of divine creation. However, the insights he gained on the trip were the basis for his theory of evolution - a theory that shook the common world view of the time.
At the beginning of this year I was finally able to realize the plan to travel to Patagonia in Darwin's footsteps. It was a goosebumps moment when we climbed a hill and looked out over Wulaia Bay - the bay where Captain Fitzroy had his first encounter with local Indians (the resulting story is well known). Almost 200 years ago, the HMS Beagle may have also anchored where our expedition ship anchored. Patagonia remained a relatively untouched piece of earth. Its roughness has preserved it - and gives it its charm.

„With such moderate abilities as I possess, it is truly surprising that I should have influenced to such an extent what men believe. Indeed, I was considered by my masters and by my father as a very ordinary boy - rather below the common standard in intellect. As for the voyage with the Beagle, it was by far the most important event in my life - it determined my whole career.“
-Charles Darwin

These wolves are well known, from Byron's account of their tameness and curiosity, which the sailors, who ran into the water to avoid them, mistook for fierceness.

Plaque hunting should absolutely be a thing. I do it and I love it. Go someplace new? Hunt for plaques and learn a little local history! Walking down the same street you walk every day and have for years? Reread the plaques! Take photos, share ‘em! I love plaques so much! Not monuments or statues or anything like that. Just little epitaphs on pieces of metal or rock pinned to places that once held a great deal of significance to a small community.

HMS Beagle painted by Owen Stanley, 1841
On 27 December, 1831, the HMS Beagle set sail from Plymouth Sound, embarking on a voyage (the ship's second) that lasted over four years. Captain Robert Fitzroy was accompanied by a twenty-two-year-old Charles Darwin as an unofficial ship's naturalist, and observations made by Darwin during the voyage influenced the development of his theory of natural selection.

The land is one great wild, untidy, luxuriant hothouse, made by Nature for herself, but taken possession of by man, who has studded it with gay houses and formal gardens.

On this day in 1831, 22-year-old Charles Darwin set sail on the HMS Beagle for a trip around the world. For most of the next five years, the Beagle surveyed the coast of South America, leaving Darwin free to explore the continent and islands, including the Galápagos. He filled dozens of notebooks with careful observations on animals, plants, and geology, and collected thousands of specimens, which he sent home for further study. Darwin later called the Beagle voyage "by far the most important event in my life," saying it "determined my whole career."

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 29 May 2024
In this front garden the evergreen shrub Berberis darwinii (Darwin's barberry) has been allowed to grow much taller than usual as it is often prune into a hedge. It has been crown lifted and become a small tree and so the bark can be admired. This species was named after the naturalist Charles Darwin, who discovered it in 1835 during his voyage to South America.

Beagle, a channel between two oceans
“The most beautiful contrast ever seen between sea and ice” - Charles Darwin during his navigation aboard the ship The Beagle in the strait that would become the Beagle Channel.
Between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, between Argentina and Chile, the Beagle Channel forms a strait that extends from east to west for 240 km long and connects the two oceans. This arm of the sea cuts Tierra del Fuego in two: the large island to the north and an archipelago made up of a multitude of small islands to the south.

We stood out to sea, and on the second day again made the land, when we saw on our weather-bow this notorious promontory in its proper form – veiled in a mist, and its dim outline surrounded by a storm of wind and water.
