Guys. Guys only look at Merlin. LOOK.
Look at how he's so in tune with every movement of Arthur's that his eyes immediately trained on what's wrong with Arthur when nobody else noticed there was something amiss.
Look at how he instantly takes the mantle, steadies and strengthens Arthur by literally hauling him up on his shoulder the next scene, carrying him and his pain so willingly.
And you wonder why some fic writers (🙋) are never able to write Angry!Arthur about the magic reveal? Well, because this is what we imagine would've always been on the forefront of his mind. Not Merlin's golden, "traitorous" eyes, but Merlin's loving, healing ones.
Sick, sick, sick of them

in my head after the events of camlann merlin returns to camelot and, still riddled with terrible guilt and grief, confesses to leon about everything that had happened and everything he had done, magic and all. and instead of outrage or betrayal or scorn or judgement (or even death, as he had briefly considered) leon shatters him with a deeply apologetic expression and a whispered “my friend… you must have been so afraid, and so tired.” and merlin collapses into heaving sobs against him and doesn’t get back up for a long time.

I need to cleanse my brain after seeing such terrible takes on Arthur
People genuinely think at the core of their being and his that he is just an asshole who doesn't think Merlin is brave
(yet 5 minutes later drops everything because he has a dream or vision or whatever he thinks it was of Merlin and trusts him implicity to change their tactics at Camlann)
Like FOR THE LOVE OF CAMELOT I beg ya not to just get on the arthurs an ass train
YES he can be an ass and a prat but he is so much more so fucking much more than that and he loves Merlin to death (not even talking shipping here)
and if you can't see that and take his snarky or rude or hurtful things as gospel whilst being blind to the fact he was hurt when he said it AND DIDN'T FUCKING MEAN IT then there is no hope for you

to this day I still wonder what the director told colin morgan that made him say the "how long have you been training to be a prat, my lord?" line the way he did

forever and always obsessed with self fulfilling prophecy as a continuous theme in bbc merlin. from the get go merlin essentially knew every bad thing that would happen throughout the series (morgana’s betrayal, mordred’s betrayal, arthur’s death) but he constantly had a million different people telling him how to deal with his problems that he ultimately was the cause of all those problems due to his indecision to approach with empathy vs ruthlessness
merlin’s first instinct was always kindness but every time he was reminded of the prophecy he reacted with fear. if he remained true to his values he would have told morgana about his magic and she wouldn’t have turned to morgause, he would have never said that magic has no place in camelot and arthur would of brought magic back and kara would (probably) not be executed and mordred wouldn’t have betrayed them and arthur wouldn’t have died.
merlin’s fear and desperation to thwart the prophecy shaped every decision that caused the prophecy

I think what really gets to me with the finale is that Merlin was so close to getting Arthur to the lake. Yet, there was no plan beyond that. It's like even if they did get there, who knows if anything would have happened.
The idea that there was still more tragedy awaiting even if they made it, that yeah despite all of Merlin’s magic, he couldn't save Arthur's life.
It was always the possibility of the Sidhe, but there was no guarantee. It was all hope from the start, endless hope that failed them in the end.
Because well, it was always supposed to happen like this anyway... Arthur was meant to die so he could rise again, there was no alternative

Merlin learned a lot of things from Gaius... magic, healing, the way the Kingdom works... but truly the thing he learned the most from him is how to be sassy as all hell

Gwaine being the only one to check on merlin after gaius was kidnapped and framed to have been guilty of consorting with sorcerers, and by doing that he was able to give merlin a clue about gaius' whereabouts based off some red dirt with iron in it >>>>>>>>>

Alex Vlahos: And there you are, in your Saxon guise. Colin Morgan: Yes, yeah. We very rarely get to see me scarfless. Alex Vlahos: Yeah. I bet you enjoyed that. Colin Morgan: I felt quite naked.

Love how some villains say to the hero "I want to destroy/kill you" (or at least think about hurting the hero) and then when they are redeemed they say (or think) "If anyone dared to hurt you, I will destroy/kill them"

"But the reason why we retell the tales over and over is to create hope. We keep these themes and characters alive because we need them, because we need to make sense of what is happening and what needs to happen in our lives, and what better way to do that than with grand, tragic characters who already make sense to us? They explain the world to us and inspire us to keep going even though a happy ending may not be possible (Gilgamesh) and maybe because a happy ending may not be possible yet (Arthur).
“When Albion’s need is greatest,” Kilgharrah says in the last episode of Merlin, “Arthur will rise again.”
And he has risen when we needed him most. Multiple times. We were even the ones doing the resurrecting."
