one thing I'm thinking about with SOTW is the fact that Gwaine is loyal to Merlin first and Arthur second. Sure he comes with Merlin when she heads off to help Arthur in the Perilous Lands, but the friend he's helping is Merlin and only Arthur by extension.

And he and Merlin stay when Arthur leaves and he watches her perform magic, he watches her bury her grandfather with a careful hand, reverently settling his crown on the throne he died in.

When he's offered a chance to become a knight, he turns it down.

"That's not my dream," he says. Lies.

He is knighted by moonlight by a queen with golden eyes.

5.04 Another's Sorrow

Hear me out I enjoy this 'Gwaine calls Arthur princess and is loyal to Merlin first' fanfic thing just as much as everyone else but please can we not forget what canon Gwaine is really like?

Let me elaborate.

Gwaine does call Arthur princess once and likes to tease him but that is before he becomes his knight. His attitude towards him changes radically from this moment on:

As Arthur knights him, his carefree demeanour shifts abruptly. Look how serious he is, how solemn. He even closes his eyes, barely containing his emotions. This is Gwaine accepting the knighthood he had never wanted because it was being given to him by a man who didn't know he was actually a noble. With this gesture Arthur was giving him something he had always been looking for: a purpose, a meaning to his life. And he finally finds it in serving and protecting that man who believed in equality above all things and who had found Gwaine, a supposedly nobody, worthy of bestowing upon him the greatest honour he was capable of.

In that moment Arthur gave him a home, a family and something to fight for.

And in exchange Gwaine took his oath of allegiance to heart and became fiercely loyal and protective of Arthur.

This is his reaction when Dragoon threatens his king's life:

This is how he responds when Merlin asks him to look after Arthur because he fears that he may be in danger:

In the Disir's cave, of all the people present, it is Gwaine who gets super angry and jumps in front of Arthur the moment the Disir start attackig him.

And when Arthur is poisoned and Gaius tells them that it's deadly, there he is, on the front line, clutching his chest, utterly devastated.

So, yes, of course Merlin was Gwaine's first friend, of course he'd always remain loyal to him no matter what. But he loved and respected Arthur just the same.

And the fact that he dies thinking he has failed him will haunt me until the day I die.

merlin’s secret being a visual thing. when he is around arthur or gwen or leon or morgana or [insert whatever character here] merlin seems pale and thin, almost like a ghost or an apparition. when the sun lands on him he reflects it like a corpse, he eyes seem dark and dull. he has this ethereal beauty to him, this otherworldly visage that leads many to believe he is of fae blood. he just doesn’t seem to be 100% human. but when he is ONLY with lancelot or gaius (cough or gwaine bc gwaine DEFINITELY knew) merlin is heartachingly human. merlin shines in the sunlight, colors are brighter and more vibrant around him, and his smiles are wide and his laughs are boisterous. he takes on color and leaves everyone wanting to know him. but when other join in or interact with the two, merlin shifts before their eyes so quickly and suddenly that they aren’t sure whether or not what they saw was a trick of the light. the idea still leaves them wanting more and wanting to see the merlin who is just so full of life but that merlin only appears for a small select group of people. merlin who has a guard so high that it has an effect of other’s perception of him.

When you think about the tavern excuse in Merlin (the only excuse Giaus seems to know), it makes a lot more sense in the later seasons if you're going under the assumption that Gwaine is just covering for Merlin. Like lying when Arthur asks occasionally while having no idea what Merlin is actually doing because he ain't no snitch.

Just a random thought that occurred to me while I was reading some fanfiction.

i mean, yeah, it does work a lot better and it's more believable if gwaine were the one to tell it.

if i'm remembering right, "the tavern" was used in the beginning of s3 before we meet gwaine and unfortunately, gwaine's stay in camelot that season is short bc he got banished. so, there'd be no way for him to cover for merlin BUT after the whole fisher king episode it would make sense (to arthur, i feel) that merlin would leave camelot to visit gwaine at a tavern bc the two just click.

i have half a mind to guess that arthur turns a blind eye if gwaine were to somehow sneak into camelot just to visit merlin during s3. i know we all joke about arthur being an oblivious idiot when it comes to noticing magic and shit, but the man is observant to a fault. he's got a keen eye (unfortunatley his observations fail when something contradicts a person he believes to know fairly well, and he chooses to ignore it), and it is not that hard to notice the chemistry between merlin and gwaine.

so when gwaine does join the knights in s4 and merlin starts going to "the tavern" more often, arthur could just chalk it up as him and gwaine having a night out. sure, he has to keep up appearances and one day visits gwaine just to remind him that it's not good for his manservant to be hungover almost every week. like, he has a job, ga-waine!

and gwaine just sits there, nods, cracks a joke about how maybe he should lighten merlin's chores, whilst making a mental note to ask merlin about whether or not he'll need him to cover for the man later this weekend. he never asks merlin why he'd need to cover for him (i'm of the belief that gwaine, though never told, had some idea of what big secret merlin was hiding), and merlin never asks gwaine why he'd lie to their king for him.

it's just a silent act of trust and love the two share and by god do i wish this was used because sure, gaius using the tavern is funny and all, but i would kill to have at least one scene where gwaine confirms, that him and merlin were hanging out at the tavern, covering for his friend without question.

I love that in some fics where merthur is already together no one in Camelot, not even the nobles, have said anything against their relationship. They would parade around holding hands, kissing each other, and blocking swords (or spells) in order to protect one another in front of other royalties, nobles, and foreign dignitaries; but none of those from Camelot blinks an eye. Not even when others started questioning the nature of the two's relationship.

Back on my AU where Arthur died before Merlin could tell him he has magic and kinda merlin not being a sad wet cat for 1500 years (DO YOU ALL UNDERSTAND HOW FUCKING LONG THAT IS) agenda

Merlin trying his best to hide the fact that he is extremely well know. In a "there a documentary on you" and"multiple governments call you regularly, that's literally your job, about magical problem that only you can resolve which mean that you have to go on TV sometime" kind of way (Merlin : bless the lazy-ass person that nicknamed me The Immortal/Emrys .) While also hiding the fact that "heeeyyy you know, the things we wordlessly accepted to not talk about, the thing called 'The day I died' which hem didn't happen and 'Where the fuck I was when you died' we should hem, maybe talk about them"

It all go well until, one day, Merlin and Arthur are arguing in a supermarket (like seriously arguing, the kind of argument that happen when one get throw 1500 years in the future) and when and Arthur says something like "Watch your tongue/Remember who you're talking to/...!" and there is a collective *gasp*

It could go two way :

One. Arthur has an enormous "????" sign above his head, Merlin freeze and flee (if he falls to flee the scene with a confuse but mainly angry arthur, arthur would gaps his arm and force him to stay in place which would bring us to two.)

Two. Someone intervene because : ?!?! Bro/boy !? Shut the fuck up?! Do YOU know who you are talking to?!?! Apologise right now!

Merlin : no you shut up by the triple godnes please—

*Arthur and the person now arguing with other people joining in the argument*

At some point in end up being a "How dare you insult my friend like that?! He does NOT have magic" "What kind of weed did you smoke?! He is LITTERALY magic"

(the Knights and Gwen are in the supermarket too but none of them were with merthur when it happens except Leon who just saw the beginning of Arthut vs Random people fight and promptly walked back to his wife/Queen to report what he saw. The queen in question decided that she is too old for this shit, so is Merlin and it's time they get their shit together)

Am I the only one who thinks that Gauvain bears a striking resemblance to Eugene/Flynn rider?

I mean, in attitude as much as in looks.

They both have the same kind of humor and tend to act very much alike, they both seem disinterested but care about and protect the ones they love while being honest and funny.

In short, I love Gauvain and Eugene/Flynn Rider and I just thought they looked alike.
