except malc isn’t around (yet). however, there is another hooded perpetual with weirdly strong psychic powers wandering the palace. this isn’t great for emp’s mental state but who said any of this was great for emp’s mental state.

now that first question. the short answer is ferrus and fulgrim at least start the au by being firmly On Vacation

ferrus and fulgrim, once they’ve spent some time working things out between themselves generally just kinda. hang around? they’re slowly working on undoing the damage they did to their respective legions, kind of leading the charge for emotional rehab here like ‘ok there’s got to be a way to learn these lessons without Dying Horribly. right.’ they are preoccupied with this for much of the plot, in part because unlike most of the other Primarchs, Fulgrim in particular (and Ferrus by virtue of sticking close by to him) is Not Allowed to interact with Juno. At All.* (*until she’s older). In fact he’s top of The List (which is a thing that does exist). (this could be the subject of a whole nother post however, so i digress)

Fulgrim is actually quite upset by this; he’s put some degree of effort into repairing his relationship with Ferrus, and wishes gman would afford him the same opportunity. gman said i don’t owe u shit, which he’s right about, and though fulgrim understands this that doesn’t mean he’s happy about it. especially when it means he’s effectively out of the running for ‘baby niece’s favoritestest coolest most spoil you rotten uncle’ like forever (don’t feel too bad fulgrim. you’ll never guess who juno’s favorite is. none of you ever stood a chance.)

luckily fulgrim has other children to occupy his time.

N’kari was really important to fulgrim post-fall, as a touchstone and companion. The two were still very close even though they had not seen each other for some time at the start of this au, so when N’kari has an unsanctioned hybrid clutch with a khornate daemon and is panicking about it he goes straight to his bestie who uses his imperial-green-card-by-marriage to shelter him from the two angered deities.

So aside from their legions, Fulgrim and Ferrus’ downtime is largely occupied with assisting N’kari and Skarbrand raise their menace twin girls: Deimos and Phobos! They are somewhere between 7-10 years younger than Juno, and idolize her greatly, though she mostly knows them as these annoying kids who follow her around while she’s exploring the warp in her early twenties. Anyway that’s where all of Fulgrim’s ‘childless lesbian double income auntie at christmas’ energy goes; he spoils those brats rotten.

Every lesbian hobby show needs a Yamada Ryo. Woman who shows up to the shoot with eyebags and crippling debt and a gender that is the equivalent of a clunker car pieced together from the corpses of five others and also possibly stolen and therefore catnip to the ladies. Baleful bitch who acts like she's been through about ten works of the same genre before and is both profoundly annoyed by and hopelessly codependent on pastel girlypops who croon about love and dreams. Disagreeable fellow who has slouched in from the mouldering skeleton of a gay club in the sewers to round out the four humours required for an ensemble cast and more importantly for her paycheck. Bastard boyfriend who will almost certainly ruin a few more careers before she is finally meets her end by slipping into a pool (not hers) that she has filled with Substances and Women. Washed-up poet who communicates mainly in grunts and jibes, but will occasionally deliver the rawest monologue on art ever and rewire a young star's brain before making her pay for shit she didn't even know was on the menu while she flees from the crow mafia. Every wretched stereotype of a queer you've ever heard rolled into one who's rolled her way into a 4koma world where everyone is precious and sympathetic and love ultimately wins. She's like if a plastic bag was a vital part of the ecosystem. I adore her.

You know, people complain about insincerity in media--the constant quippiness, the constant irony, the refusal to engage with tropes or characters without a fat layer of postmodern self-awareness in the way--but I actually think that's a problem in fandom too and may even have influenced the problem on the creator side, through fans working their way into companies and creators trying to engage with fandom.

You look at discussion of Star Wars, for instance, and it's just a steady stream of smart-aleckness. Leia is a disaster lesbian. Darth Vader is a drama queen. It's good to have a sense of humor about this stuff--after all, it's only a show and taking it too seriously definitely has its own set of problems--but it feels like that jokeyness has started a feedback loop between creators and audience where the fans keep taking it less seriously and TPTB keep presenting it less seriously. Until it all seems more like Regular Show than a regular show.

Fandom sees Jim Kirk, a serious-minded leader of men who is occasionally used for comic relief like any good character, and for comedic effect fixates on his womanizing and disregard for orders (only when necessary--which does admittedly come up a lot in a series full of stories being told for dramatic impact. Nothing too dramatic about Kirk following orders and completing his assignment without any trouble).

J.J. Abrams sees this pop culture snowballing of Kirk after years and decades of exaggeration and turns Chris Pine into a horny cowboy.

Fandom unfamiliar with the original series watches the reboot, assumes horny cowboy is the natural state of Captain Kirk, and exaggerates that even further for laughs.

Abrams sees that fans like when Kirk is a horny cowboy--it's all they talk about, after all--and ramps it up by having him casually breaking the Prime Directive and lying about it in the second movie (and having a threesome with alien space babes, for what it's worth).

And so it goes*. That's a pretty extreme case, because most characters don't get decades of pop culture warping their perception, but I feel like... at present, with this miscegenation between fans and creators, where people can show their fan art directly to writers on Twitter... it's exacerbated some.

There isn't that distance that used to impose a certain formality on fans and creators. And so I think the way fans view characters and canon can very easily infiltrate how the creators handle them, even without some crazed fanboy actually getting to pen a Disney+ show or Marvel comic.

Or maybe not. I just see a lot of shows and comics that seem like they want to be fandom catnip ahead of and above being a good story or even an artistic statement the creator is trying to make.

*Digression for Star Trek fans. Ignore if you're not a Trekkie.

Thankfully, I've seen some pushback against Horny Cowboy Kirk in Beyond and Strange New Worlds. Beyond I think portrayed how Horny Cowboy Kirk would chafe against the demands of captaincy and need to evolve closer to Shatner Kirk to keep going on the path he wants to be on. While SNW just shows Kirk as a dutiful, if risk-taking, officer on the fast-track to command thanks to his obvious competence and passion for the job. Which is, you know, what you'd expect from Kirk pre-TOS, but it's good they didn't overthink it and say that he was, I don't know, a drug smuggler all this time (Star Wars. Poe.)

So, credit where credit's due. It's not all bad.

- Mafin rewatch (Sueños de Libertad)

Isidro is possibly the father of the year. Maybe I’ll change my mind when it turns out he’s kind of homophobic, but for now that man gives some seriously good advice. I get why Fina is the way she is, oh not the mood thing, but the stability, the self-assurance. When you have someone holding you up like Isidro does, giving advice like he does, about how the best approach is to find the good sides in yourself and commit to those - I mean, yeah, it’s not hard to understand he could raise a daughter like Fina. It’s also such a nice contrast with the next scene which is the de la Reina’s sitting down for a meal and it’s just the absolute opposite. They too talk about work, but there’s no emotion and there’s no support, it’s more like open hunting season and holds none of the open vulnerability and sincerity of Fina and Isidro's conversation.

Aw man, fuck up my heart with that look Marta gives when Damian talks about how nothing makes him happier than having his kids get married and start families. All that effort she puts in and still she can’t truly make her father proud. That shit is got to sit lodged in her heart like a very jagged piece of broken glass. Also, I think this is the first glimpse of a personality hiding behind the mask.

Jesús and Andrés are two stupid boys fighting over what they think of as toys, women. I do not care for them.

Marta is a sarcastic bitch to Elena and I approve. Okay, second glimpse of a personality, nice. Broken and sarcastic, playing my tune.

That thing Spanish people do with their tongue between their teeth as they pronounce certain sounds, is it just me being gay or is it kind of hot? Granted it’s mostly Marta who is hot when she’s doing it, so I might have answered my own question.

Petra, stop fucking touching Fina! It is not your right to be that handsy and I do not care for it. Keep your scruffy looking nerf-herding paws off of her!

Fina established as a clumsy queen from the getgo tickles me. The way she practically smashed that perfume bottle through the counter as she tried to make a good impression on Marta (and failing) gives her the kind of humanity my otherwise perfect lesbian needs to be nuanced. No one likes a perfect being who looks like her, smiles like her, has that self-assuredness of hers, unless there is also some flaw too her. The fact that this is a character who is so perfect in many ways, but at the same time could probably tear down an entire china shop on her own without the assistance of any bulls - it makes her really loveable. And as a woman who have broken her toe by kicking it into a threshold and given herself a black eye by walking into a doorframe, well I feel represented. Oh, don't get me wrong, there are more flaws to Fina than this, but we're not there yet. One step at a time.

The face of a woman who does not understand the power she holds over other women. And I don't just mean that as a crack at her being lesbian catnip, but the character doesn't actually understand the impact she has on the women around her. She's so used to being compared to the men in her life that I think she doesn't see or understand what a role model she has become for a lot of women, especially those working for her.

Fina being so dismissive when Carmen tells them she’s crying because of Tasio is gold. She just has no time for these fools and I love it. Her silent nod when Carmen says “why bother with a man who doesn’t love you back” - perfection. She is the Oprah gif personified. As I regularly channel my inner Xena while I’m in a professional setting, I think from now on I’ll also try to be channelling my inner Fina when it comes to my personal relationships. As blunt, but reassuring as she is, I think we should all strive to me more like her with our friends and family.

“That won't be a problem.”

Her negroni is nearly gone now, and she hopes it isn't too obvious how much she anticipates finishing it and bringing Vi home with her already. She would worry about it more, if Vi's heavy-bottomed glass of whiskey wasn't already empty.

She finds Vi amidst a collection of canvases, hurriedly dry brushing a still-life of a pear with a broken-handled, evidently old paintbrush. A red-headed woman shares a bench with Vi and leans into her shoulder as she sketches on a blank canvas. Something in Caitlyn's chest unfurls, a prickling feeling running up and down her spine. Her eyes narrow against her will. Ever the spoiled only child, Caitlyn has never been good at sharing her toys.

She originally doubted Jinx's advice on getting her attention, but if it disturbs the woman touching Vi, Caitlyn will do anything. She claps in front of Vi's face.

“What the fuck?” Vi curses, pulling back from her canvas.

The red-headed woman drops her pencil and stares unabashedly at Caitlyn. A sick sense of satisfaction builds in her at the sight, which is needlessly cruel. Vi doesn't belong to her.

Caitlyn doesn't know if she's thinking about the other woman, or herself.

“Oh, cupcake! I take it Jinx told you to do that?” Vi gives her an easy smile. “Welcome to the painting studio. This is Sarah Fortune. Sarah, meet Caitlyn.”

The redhead– Sarah, provides a pained grimace for Caitlyn. She definitely hates her, but Caitlyn can't find it in herself to care when she's really only here for Vi. “Hi, Caitlyn.”

“Hi,” Caitlyn says. “Jinx told me it was the only way you would look away from your work. How are you both?”

“There are plenty of other ways to get someone's attention,” Sarah huffs, reaching for her pencil. She turns away from the two of them, reoccupying herself with her sketch.

Vi hesitates, not seeming to understand why Sarah and Caitlyn are immediately at odds. Of course she wouldn't, she has no conception of how goddamn attractive she is, in her paint-splattered overalls with nothing but a sports bra underneath, carabiner fastened to her belt loop, hair tied back under a bandana. Soft nicknames. Will find each other across the vast emptiness of space again and again, because fate wills it so. If I took a bullet for you it would be the best thing I ever did. and like yes this dynamic is clearly 100% platonic. but what’s truly hysterical is you can see it bleeding into the specific way that Sana tortures herself over Campbell because she either lost or never truly had a conception of love beyond self-sacrifice and she cannot fathom what she would ever sacrifice of herself that could measure up to what he is willing and able to sacrifice for her and it’s like. that’s so interesting I wonder whose love you’re able to accept because you feel like you have something to give them. I wonder who you could give your life for. I wonder who you’d give up your honor for. I wonder who, no matter how many hits she takes, no matter how much of her soul she stains for you, will never feel like she has paid back what you’ve already given.

Summer 2023 Anime Overview: Undead Murder Farce and My Happy Marriage

Undead Murder Farce

Premise: Our story takes place in Victorian times/the Meji Era. Tsugaru is a half-oni (demon) and half human as a result of a mysterious man doing horrible experimentation on him. He’s approached by Aya Rindo, an immortal woman who has been reduced to a head (transported in a birdcage by her combat-saavy maid Shizuku) because the same man beheaded her and stole her body. They agree to team up to find the man and hopefully get Aya’s body back. As they look for the man, they travel Europe and to solve mysteries related to monsters and inhumans.

Undead Murder Farce was definitely my show of the summer season. It’s a fun mystery series starring three asshole weirdo protagonists, it’s bursting with monsters and demons and bizarre people, full of references to Victorian literature and rakugo and all kinds of nerdy stuff, it’s got stylish, slick direction from Mamoru Hatekayama (you know him from Kaguya: Love is War, and Rakugo Shinju) and it’s really gay.

The trio of Aya, Tsugaru, and Shizuku all have really have a snarky comfortable friend dynamic and their banter as they solve vampire murder mysteries, try to outsmart Arsene Lupin and a gang of Victorian literary monsters, and investigate a werewolf village and it makes for an entertaining watch. Aya will never stop making stupid jokes about how she’s just a head in a cage, and we love her for it.

The “let’s stuff in every Victorian public domain character we can” arc is where the show really starts to shine (though unlike some others, I do still really like the vampire murder mystery arc a lot—I just love the idea of a vampire murder mystery, and we really get a good feel for the cast. It’s definitely the weakest arc of the series, though). UDM gets to whip out all its literary nerd credentials. The case involves: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Arsene Lupin, The Phantom of the Opera, Carmilla, Frankenstein’s Monster, Aleister Crowley, Phileas Fogg and two surprise characters.

And yes, they remember that Carmilla is gay, which automatically puts in above 99.9% adaptations of the character. They do make her older and WAY more of a sexpot than the novel version, which, eh,  but she’s 100% the ultra-campy Blueprint Problematic Lesbian Vampire she deserves to be. Like in the novel, she exclusively feeds on and seduces women and she gets into a deeply sapphic rivalry with Shizuku, who she tries to subdue and toy with using her vampire powers. (As you can expect from the character, there is the assault stuff that comes with that territory, though they don’t go too far with it, she kisses Shizuku's neck and messes up her shirt a bit).

But also, we find out Shizuku is used to making love with someone who has “centuries” on Carmilla and is “far more experienced ”, which can only be Aya. This is further confirmed when Shizuku shows jealousy over Tsugaru and Aya’s transactional kiss in the next arc and Tsugaru has to reassure her. And then Shizuku just CONTINUES to stumble into sapphic situations. She gets surrounded by naked ladies and bonds with them like twice in the last arc. It’s great. Everyone thought it might be be Aya/Tsugaru at the beginning, but turns out UDM is For the Gays and it straightbaited you. Amazing.

It's not just Carmilla that UDM shows off its nerd (and gay) credentials with—there’s the interesting choice to make the Phantom of Persian descent, which is clever as a reference to the Phantom’s time in Persia in the original novel AND adds an extra layer to the “unfairly treated as an outcast” element of the character. (Lupin and the Phantom also team up in the story and give off such strong gay energy (Lupin especially) that a lot of people ship them). And like in the novel, Frankenstein’s Monster is smart and even functions as the more level-headed one in the villain gang.

All of that stuff is catnip to me, but the best part of UDM is following it’s convoluted mysteries and seeing Aya strut her stuff figuring the them out while everyone gets in cool fights. It’s very good at what it does, and it’s a fun romp with some interesting themes about being on the margins of society and what makes an outcast simmering underneath. I had a great time with it, and I’m aching to see more of these scrappy misfits and their adventures. If you’re here for a campy but intelligent mystery series about lovable weirdos with a side order of gay, absolutely check this one out!

My Happy Marriage

Premise: Miyo was born without supernatural talents despite her father's expectations, and after her mother passes away, her father and stepfamily treat her abusively and use her as a servant. Miyo's family sticks her with an arranged marriage to Kiyoka Kudou, a man with a reputation for being cold and cruel. However, she quickly finds he’s not what he seems, and she slowly begins to gain confidence in herself.

My Happy Marriage is a straightforward Cinderella story, but one that actually focuses on the psychological effects of being abused and the slow recovery and healing journey of its protagonist. Even if she's not with her abusive family anymore, Miyo still has completely shit self esteem and even just running into her Evil Stepsister ™ in the street sends her reeling back to where she started, consumed by fear and sadness. The story is about her finding a place where she’s loved and supported, and slowly gaining confidence, and her and her husband learning to communicate. She’s still shy, domestic, and very devoted to being proper for her husband throughout, and sometimes needs help, but her learning to let herself be loved and learning to find her own strength and power is the focus of the story. It shows how many obstacles you have to bravely face just to move forward after trauma. And in the end, Miyo finds her own way to save the day. I think that’s really valuable.

Though, like in the original Cinderella story, there is the issue of the pure, domestic woman being contrasted with evil, conniving, social climbing women (though at least there’s no “and they’re also ugly” thing going, and they have her dad be shitty too). It wasn’t bothering me too much--even the ‘training to be a proper wife’ stuff Miyo decides to do since it wasn't out of place in the Meiji era setting-- until Miyo met her sister-in-law. Sis is a divorced woman and a little more “modern” and forward than Miyo and I was excited at first, because hey, a woman in this story who doesn’t fit either the ‘demure’ or ‘evil’ archetypes. But then it turned out her tragic backstory was that she’s a shitty cook and therefore failed to be a proper woman for her husband’s family and her in-laws drove her to divorce, which she 100% blames herself and her lack of domestic skil and 'unwillingness to compromise" with her mean in-laws for. She’s not challenged on this attitude at all. I can easily see a future plotline where she reunites with her ex-husband and he reveals he didn’t mind the cooking or something, but as it stands, it’s pretty disheartening and I don't see why it was a thing.

Still, Miyo’s arc is cathartic and well done, and the animation absolutely beautiful throughout. It’s nice seeing a story focusing on recovery that focuses on the small triumphs that come with learning to see your own value after being told you’re worthless. The supernatural element is a fun touch. It’s already been renewed for a second season and I’m definitely here for the rest.

Lay All Your Love On Me - You walk into medbay to find Bones overworking himself (no surprise there) and try to convince him to take a break. In the process he discovers that you are a very good hugger, and word spreads fast. Basically, it's four chapters of gratuitous cuddling with Bones, Kirk and Spock, sue me.

Banter or Bullying? - Spock has gained some insecurities from the constant teasing he gets from other members of the crew. On his way to a meeting, he overhears you talking to Scotty about him, or, more accurately, gushing about him. You help him realise that the things he gets teased for by some people can be the very same things someone else finds most endearing about him.

Huddling for Warmth, Logically Of Course - You and Spock get stranded in a cold, snowy landscape when the transporter malfunctions. The logical solution is, of course, to share body heat. If you happened to fall asleep in Spock's arms, I wonder how he would react...

Cuddlebug - Spock gets high on catnip and craves cuddles! Unfortunately, he also seems to think you're 'his' and won't let go. Oh well, might as well enjoy the attention while it lasts! (Crackfic)

There are a number of reasons why a story might be in here, including: it is a crossover or AU, it doesn't connect well to the main timeline, or I felt that it wouldn't have added anything meaningful to the main story, but I thought it would be fun to write anyway. These stories are not canon to The Lonely Warrior, but if you like Einar and want to see them being put in Situations, then this fic is for you!

Charlie & PB remain annoying af. But I have hopes their relationship will be less gag-inducing once Charlie’s secrets come to light. And maybe his real personality. Surely he isn’t really like this… that fake scrunched up smile… but they keep playing romantic music when he’s all clinging and pathetic as if we are supposed to find this behavior charming…. Fingers crossed for secretly badass nerd dom Charlie to emerge…

I can imagine Charlie hiring some thugs on a motorbike but I can’t imagine him wrecking a race car on purpose. So it seems Way is the biggest suspect for that… maybe he’s tired of always coming in behind ya, PB? Isn’t that kind of the plot of Talledega Nights? If you’re not first yer last. But then again would he risk burns on his idol?

i keep noticing that devil's double has very much way too many dudes in the cast (and also calico, as well as bel & rem, who have one gender they share between them) whereas starlight wishes is exclusively women and one lizard. which represents what eras of Me i made those settings in but is also really funny.

okay here's the lore i made up in my head.

first of all Who (do i think) Are They:

Aysa Klyonina: Aysa has like A Presence within the in-game narrative and we have some info about her: friend of Yulia, lives in the the Trammel with her, and is an engineer who helps her with calculations (in P2, Yulia has the title of Mathematician, and Aysa being an engineer means she puts the math to practical designs/execution). she's a woman in STEM ♥. as i've drawn [here], methinks aysa as an (unreciprocated) crush on yulia. i think their cohabitation started as Women Hanging Out Together (platonically/professionally)/like if the Trammel was a lesbian commune but it's one house & then Aysa developed her little crush. while i've depicted Yulias as [CLUELESS] i think it evolves into YOU HAVE THE POWER TO GET YOURSELF OTHER BITCHES for she is a staunch monogamist (something her girlfriend doesn't have to be) in a committed relationship.

Rat Catcher: the Rat Catcher only appears in Burakh's 3rd death cutscene and has no apparition outside of it, in the narrative that is meant to represent a "real world"/lived experience. while her name implies she catches rat, she's apparently only worried about one, a big one, that burakh let loose coming in. she's a metanarrative device. However comma she has to me Pied Piper vibes; while P2 doesn't have rats and instead has gerbils, i think this is so sick and twisted, and i think they should have normal rats, and she should handle rats, and she can play the flute to rally the rats. she has pet rats (normal rats) that she trains for the theatre and to act as messenger. while her Starling model makes her look a little bit #afraid i think she is mischievous in the same ways Mark is: indeed i think she is his sister. i looove making up family bonds between characters i did it for dandy & catnip already. she's a silly. she handles rats. she's a metanarrative device that dwells in the layer that's "under" the main game, within the mechanisms of the game such as death. but unlike Mark she deals less with the ambiguous/meta[phorical/physical], the sneakiness, etc. she's way more normal about it, i think mostly she vibes. she is aware of her place as a chthonic type of figure, but unlike her brother who heavily plays on it, she just Lives Here. this is the rat catcher. she strikes me as an Olga because it's passe-partout, it's common, it's unsuspecting. she's like a little mouse in that.

HOW DID THEY MEET?

by doing her calculations for the making of the very town, Yulia deals with the underliements. the subterranean Narrative-Wise of the town. it is by accompanying her in these endeavors that Aysa met First Name Rat Last Name Catcher (FNRLNC). the very first time, i think they just spotted each other as aysa & yulia were taking measurements around the Theatre and FNRLNC was on her smoke break (i also think all three are smokers, yulia the heaviest of them three). just smiled & nodded & carried on. Aysa & FNRLNC kept running into each other as Aysa was on the field taking More measurements and trying out some prototypes/designs out there. by digging into how the un-roads are intertwined you run into this woman it just is how it is. they struck up conversation. possibly asked for a cigarette or offered one. i think aysa is kinda shy/reserved, one of the reasons her and yulia work well together is because they kinda behave like nervous animals, but FNRLNC is more extraverted, a little bit quirky outwardly. i think she started finding aysa cute first, maybe flirted openly, but aysa was like 🧍‍♀️ (<- clueless because since she can't flirt she doesn't know how others would do it). FNRLNC was like It is what it is and didn't push further. i think yulia & aysa came across multiple rat nests when doing the roadlayings, and who you gonna call.... ratcatcher!! i think when aysa saw her breaking out the flute and pied-piper them outta the way she became like Damn........... (she loves a woman with a strange and unusual talent) and that's how it started.

she would get out of the house pretending she needed to check on a water pump, or a sewer grid, or a bridge, whatever, and go hang out with FNRLNC. smoking. FNRLNC showing her her pet rats & aysa being like "(deathly afraid) aw so cutes". you know..............

Reading This Week 2024 #38

hello hello! audiobook reading persists into this week and for the forseeable future. basically any time that i have the bandwidth to be reading a physical book with my eyes i think "oh i should be working on my thesis" so audiobooks are what is keeping me from just sinking into a pile of work and never emerging

Finished:

Bloom Into You, Vol. 4-5 by Nakatani Nio, translated by Jenny McKeon this manga continues to rule, giving me my cute romance fix

Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie, narrated by Adjoa Andoh i'm liking that while this is like the sequel to Ancillary Justice, this was a pretty self contained story. Breq i love you. love the further exploration of ancillary-ship and imperialism and had a good chat with a friend about similarities to elements of Murderbot (we looked up publishing dates so if there was any inspiration taken, Imperial Radch came first)

Squire written by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh, art by Sara Alfageeh i felt a little undersold on the friendships the protagonist made in this, but the art was amazing the whole way through

Survivor Injustice: State-Sanctioned Abuse, Domestic Violence, and the Fight for Bodily Autonomy by Kylie Cheung, narrated by Dana Wing Lau a weird thing that's happened since i've dedicated my research brain to sexual violence is that any book written with an even slightly wider audience in mind very quickly becomes a bit tedious bc I've read all of this before. however i do think the portions of this that are about domestic violence and controlling how people vote, and the prevelance of sexual violence across all political parties in the US was the most worth the read part of this book for me

The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 2: Fandemonium written by Kieron Gillen, art by Jamie McKelvie holy shit?? excited to read the next volume (tho i think i'm going to switch the the Big volumes that collect 10 issues at a time insted of the ones with 5-6)

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo, narrated by Emily Woo Zeller really excellent YA lesbian historical fiction/romance set in Red Scare era san francisco chinatown. really nicely balances the protagonist finding herself, finding community, and finding love, with a realistic depiction of what life was like for a young lesbian during an intensely homophobic era

Rethinking Rape by Ann J. Cahill reading for my thesis! my undergrad college gets a shout out in the acknowledgements

Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa, narrated by Harrison Knights ya romance remix of pride and prejudice where "Elizabeth" is actually a trans boy, Oliver Bennet. i think it's sweet but i have one issue with the book generally and one issue with the narrator. first, since i'm familiar with pride and prejudice and have read/watched a few different adaptations at this point, i'm finding the pacing of this book a bit odd. like the disastrous darcy proposal happens 75% of the way through instead of closer to the middle. this throws me off because it means there's gonna be less time afterward to build toward Oliver and Darcy actually understanding each other than i think they deserve. my issue with the audiobook is that Knights has some very distinct character voices, and yet sometimes reads lines with the wrong voice, and no one at the publisher noticed? you can't read one of Jane's lines with the lispy voice you gave Lydia and not expect me to be completely thrown out of the book. however, i do like hidden identity stuff, so the parts of the book where Oliver knows Darcy both as himself Oliver and when he is closeted/girlmoding as Elizabeth is like catnip to me up to a certain point

she had a toy catnip pickle that she loved like it was her child

she had. the softest toe beans ever. if you were lucky she stood on your hand and you could feel them <3

she had the energy of a very graceful, delicate femme lesbian

she would walk like how a ballerina walks, with precision but also lightness

I'm not sure what she had exactly, but she was really old and just kinda had. every old cat problem possible. in her last few weeks she didn't leave my parents room and barely ate, and we decided that she wasn't enjoying life in that state (she was pretty badly sick)

the morning we decided, I went to say my goodbyes and I love yous and she got up (again, first time in days), got on my chest (her fav spot to lay on ppl w/boobs), and made biscuits and purred

I liked to think she knew what was going on and that was her way of saying goodbye and that she loved me <33

before she got sick, when you got her to a certain point of happiness when petting her or cuddling, she would start vocalizing when she purred out (bc they purr on breaths in and out) and we called them the chirpy purrs

my cat does this sometimes, and I love that. it's like he learned it from her

ok i haven’t done one of these in a while - little oc fun facts

Estelle Kelley, age 23, she/her lesbian you know the basics

-Proud mother to four cats. Technically 5 but one belongs to her brother. Their names are Moth, Bumblebee, Pillbug, and the new kittens Sappho and Achilles

-Cannot stand coffee but still goes to Beanies every goddamn day :/

-Plays the violin and will attack if you call it a fiddle, she thinks it sounds less nice that way

-Speaks quite a bit of French, mostly uses it to cuss at customers during the day

-Doesn’t drink except for a small glass of wine at Christmas dinner, which she pretty much instantly gets drunk off of: the lightest of lightweights

-Still can’t snap her fingers :(

-Hates driving. She owns a car and will drive if she has to, but she will be complaining the entire goddamn time

-Favourite food is basically any dessert with coconut in it lmao, favourite drink is iced tea with an absolutely OBSCENE amount of sugar in it

-Pretty much permanently scented like catnip
