The Little Prince, The Rose, & The Aviator
AKA We just got confirmation that Oscar's main allusion is in fact The Little Prince so I wanted to gather all evidence that supports it in show thus far.
cross-posted from twitter
Tumblr media
A brief summary for those who aren't familiar:
The Little Prince is a story about a young boy that travels to many worlds & meets many people. It is told out of chronological order from the perspective of an airplane pilot that the prince meets close to the end of his journey.
It explores themes around childhood and growing up, love, loss, friendship, loneliness, and hope, among other things. All ideas very prevalent in RWBY.
Tumblr media
Part 1: The Little Prince
The first theme I want to touch on is that struggle of trying not to lose yourself as you grow up.
"Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is exhausting for children to have to provide explanations over and over again."
Oscar is the youngest of the group, and yet he is one of the characters most often shown trying to reason with the adults in the room.
Tumblr media
Yes, we've mainly seen it with Hazel, Ironwood, and Oz... but while the rest of RWBYJNR are also 'just kids', he spends so much energy trying to reason with them and mediate conflicts there as well. All while still being the youngest of the bunch.
Tumblr media
Another way this shows itself is in Oscar's resistance to merging with Oz. The merge is a very clear metaphor for how the people you meet and the things you experience can often change you. And how, when you're a kid, it all feels like its completely out of your control.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the hoverbike scene, I want to shift to a different part of The Little Prince. The infamous moment with the fox and what it is to be 'tamed'. To be tamed is to create ties with others. To become important to them and for them to be important to you.
Tumblr media
When Oscar is having a talk with Oz in v8 about how he finally felt like himself, the person he wanted to be, and felt like he was finally "part of the team"... There is a fox plushie lying on the ground as he passes by.
Tumblr media
But we see that Oscar was right to feel this way later on.
Because just as he was "only a little boy like a hundred thousand other little boys" when he first met everyone... he had since been tamed, and tamed his friends in turn. And they fought tooth and nail to bring him back when he was captured by Salem.
Tumblr media
Part 2: The Aviator & the Rose
In RWBY, most characters have a main allusion that is central to their arc and then secondary allusions for what roles they fill in relation to other characters. (Ex. Yang's main allusion is Goldilocks, but when thrown into the plot, she also becomes the Beauty to Blake's Beast, just as Blake was once the Beauty to Adam's Beast).
If we apply that metric to other characters here, we know that Ozpin's main allusion is The Wizard of Oz and Ruby is Little Red Riding Hood... so when placed within Oscar's story structure of The Little Prince, they become The Aviator and The (Ruby) Rose, respectively.
Tumblr media
The aviator is a man that struggles to hold onto his childlike wonder. He tries, but he lives in a world of grown-ups so it becomes difficult with time. The little prince - much like Oscar with Ozpin - helps him remember some of the things that he's forgotten.
When the little prince meets him, the aviator is grumbly after crash landing his plane in the desert & is trying to fix it before he runs out of water.
Funny then, that when Oscar is crash landing a plane it is Oz that instructs him on how to do it.
Tumblr media
When the aviator explains his circumstances, the prince laughs and exclaims that he "fell from the sky too". Which is an interesting tie in to the canon RWBY fairytale mentioned in Before the Fall, The Boy Who Fell From The Sky...
Tumblr media
...as well as another fairytale we've seen mentioned in the show proper: The Girl Who Fell Through The World. A tale that was first talked about by Oscar, later expanded upon by Ozpin, and finally lived by Ruby Rose herself. (Yes her team also experienced it but it's very strongly emphasized Ruby and Alyx were paralleling each other in ways the others were not).
One thing about the little prince and the aviator is that by the end of their journey when it's time to say farewell, it's quite clear they've tamed each other as well. So much time spent by the pilot wishing to fix his plane and get out of the desert, but when it's finally time to say farewell, he does not want to go. This is not something we've gotten in show yet, but I'm willing to guess is going to be the basis for when the war is won and Oz is finally set free. Leaving the two of them to finally have to say goodbye.
And I realized I couldn't bear the thought of never hearing that laugh again. For me it was like a spring of resh water in the desert. "Little fellow, I want to hear you laugh again..."
Moving onto the Rose.
In the story, the little prince is enamored by her as soon as he sees her for the first time. As he gets to know her, she is described as many things. Some that fit Ruby well (miraculous, naïve) and some that she subverts (vain, self-centered).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby might not be caught up on physical appearance, but she is convinced that she's the only one in all the world that can do what she has to do. It's a childish way of looking at things, and to believe you can't accept help from others is - in its own way - selfish.
Tumblr media
In the book, the rose asks the little prince to tend to her. She's very needy with her demands and while the prince loves her dearly, it is a strained relationship. In RWBY, Oscar sees Ruby wilting very early on and decides to tend to her without waiting for her to ask. Of which we have... SO MANY EXAMPLES AND I DON'T HAVE A HIGH ENOUGH IMAGE LIMIT TO POST THEM ALL SO YOU GET 2.
Not pictured here, but still worthy of note: Oscar mediating when Ruby is being undermined in v8, Oscar talking the responsibility of telling Ironwood the truth in V7, the "food always makes me feel better" / "I made you a casserole because you were sad" scenes. The List Goes On.
Tumblr media
Part 3: Other Easter Eggs & Evidence
There are also other fun little pieces that drive home just how much these characters allude to the book as well as the inspiration it's had on the show in general.
The first thing the little prince asks the aviator for is a drawing of a sheep that he can take home with him so that it can eat up the sprouts of baobab trees before they overgrow his entire planet and destroy it (and his rose) in the process...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tree in the Ever After has maple leaves, but the shape of its trunk is very clearly not a maple. When compared to these illustrations, it seems to have pulled inspiration from baobabs... and what does the tree in the Ever After do?
Its roots consume the rose.
Tumblr media
One of the lessons that's brought up repeatedly in the book is that:
"One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.”
This is brought up in a few different ways:
The little prince left his rose back home, so when he looks to the night sky, separated from her, he says:
"The stars are beautiful because of a flower you don’t see . . ."
When Ruby is in the Ever After, with no one to tend to her, she is in a town filled with paper stars.
Tumblr media
It is brought up again in reference to the desert, which we have a wonderful tie-in now thanks to the animatic shared at RTX recently:
“What makes the desert beautiful,” the little prince said, “is that it hides a well somewhere . . .”
Tumblr media
And again by the aviator in reference to the little prince himself.
What makes the little prince special is his loyalty to a flower. Ruby Rose, who inspired Oscar to keep fighting, who reminded him he was brave, and who's mission he has worn on his literal shoulders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two other lines in that passage I've highlighted I also want to mention.
"As the little prince was falling asleep, I picked him up in my arms, and started walking again. I was moved. It was as if I was carrying a fragile treasure."
This line about the little prince being a treasure (treasure is an rg song truthers rise up 🙌)
And the emphasis on lamps being symbolic of the Little Prince himself which... we've seen for Oscar A LOT.
"What moves me so deeply about this sleeping little prince is his loyalty to a flower - the image of a rose shining within him like the flame within a lamp, even when he's asleep... (...) Lamps must be protected: A gust of wind can blow them out..."
Tumblr media
Also Ruby has been referred to as a "spark" by Oz before and when Oscar is worrying over Ruby at Brunswick farms, Maria tells him to "keep that fire fed" which is exactly what lamp lighters do. Just very deliberate use of that imagery here.
It ALSO ties into earlier in the novel where, among the little prince's many travels meeting plenty of confusing adults he doesn't understand, he encounters a lamplighter. And of all those that confused him, he found he could at least relate to this one and see value in his work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also a matter of how the prince's first appearance is at sunrise:
Tumblr media
That he is cited to live on a planet "scarcely bigger than himself" and "being in need of a friend". How we see Oscar very alone on his farm back in Mistral, just like the prince, only tending to his daily chores by himself, we never even see his aunt.
Tumblr media
And while there are a few other bits and pieces i'm surely forgetting, the last big one I want to talk about is how both the beginning and end of the book start with a venomous snake.
The aviator shows us a drawing of a boa constrictor eating a wild beast...
Tumblr media
...versus Oscar's first appearance coming immediately after he wakes from a nightmare of Tyrian, a venomous scorpion faunus, being sent to capture his rose.
Tumblr media
And the story ends with the little prince in a desert getting bit by a venomous snake that sends him back to his rose and away from the aviator... thank goodness RWBY loves to subvert its fairytale origins, amiright?
Tumblr media
"(The little prince) fell gently the way a tree falls, there wasn't even a sound..."
tl;dr Oscar is for sure The Little Prince, Ruby has always been his rose, RG canon, Tryian vs. Oscar in the desert real and #GREENLIGHTVOLUME10 SO WE CAN SEE IT HAPPEN ALREADY >:OOOO
Thank you for reading 💕

Okay, I don't usually time myself while drawing these pages, but one of my roommates informed me that I spent over 12 hours on just the first panel.
O_O;
So, anyway, background cameos include:
Some fairy beavers (John Dough and the Cherub), the Woozy (The Patchwork Girl of Oz), some Bunnyburians (The Emerald City of Oz), an ork (The Scarecrow of Oz), a kalidah (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), the zebra and the softshell crab (The Emerald City of Oz), a winged monkey (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), Professor Grunter Swyne (The Tin Woodman of Oz), Mickey Mouse (Plane Crazy by Ub Iwerks and some other guy), the siamese cat that Toto chases at the end of the 1939 MGM film, and some field mice (various Oz books).
The alligator, squirrel, king snake, and 7 birds aren't from anything.

I see a lot of folks noting the things Ted Lasso has in common with Sleepless in Seattle after Ted said it's the superior Nora Ephron film.
And, yup, I did a rewatch of the film (it's one of my favorites) and took notes too just like a lot of you lol.
There are the obvious things of course. The whole soulmatey-destiny-cosmic-forces vibe, signs (that the heroine is a skeptic of), a focus on planes and boats, an Oklahoma reference, Dr. Fieldstone (who begs people to just talk to each other and admit their feelings). There are Wizard of Oz nods too: Somewhere Over the Rainbow plays after the first radio show, when Annie hears Sam for the first time, Annie and Walter's dinner at the Rainbow Room, Sam mentioning growing a new heart, the reference to a friend named Glenda.
But being the tedbecca clown and yoga enthusiast I am (*proudly adjusts clown wig before stretching*), here are a few other things I noticed:
When Victoria is traveling, she offers to bring Noah a snow globe from the place she's visiting.
The quote: "What we think of as fate is just two neuroses knowing that they are a perfect match." "Y'all's baggage just matches right up, don't it?"
When Annie stops at the diner, she orders tea.
Jonah's Seattle Mariners hat matches the believe colors, and (I know but I stretched before this reach) at the end of the movie, when Sam and Annie hold hands for the first time, he's wearing a yellow jacket and her coat is blue.
And, my favorite (I honestly gasped), the host who seats Sam and Victoria when they first meet for dinner is named...Derick.
Now for my Affair notes:
Sleepless in Seattle paid homage to An Affair to Remember, so let's think about that movie in relation to Ted Lasso, too.
(Before I really dig in, we all know from both movies about the Empire State Building and February 14, but do you remember the teaser trailer for this season was dropped on Valentines' Day?)
Now, in Nora Ephron's Sleepless, the movie and especially the ending of Affair was touted as the most romantic thing ever.
To summarize it: The heroine (Terry) and hero (Nickie) meet while they're involved with others and take a quick "friends to lovers" journey. They realize their feelings and vow to resolve the issues keeping them apart (relationships, careers), and then meet in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. When that day comes, Terry's hit by a cab while rushing to meet Nickie...and Nickie waits in vain in the rain and thunder and lightning until he gives up, thinking she doesn't love him. She won't tell him about the accident because it left her unable to walk. Nickie visits Terry in her apartment and is just about to leave forever when he sees one of his paintings (that his agent gave to a woman in a wheelchair) and realizes what happened. Love and happiness ensues.
So:
-Ted and Rebecca aren't involved with others when they meet, but they are very hung up on their exes, and they have to work through their issues before they're ready to be in a relationship with someone.
-There's been debate for a while in the general Ted Lasso fandom about the show foreshadowing a car accident. Ted even almost steps in front of a car a few times.
-Rebecca's "thunder and lighting" haven't happened yet.
-Ted's not a painter like Nickie, but the Hockney drawing that Rupert gave Rebecca is important to her journey. And this show likes parallels, so I've been thinking about how a drawing/painting/piece of artwork involving Ted might play a part in an eventual tedbecca. I've wondered if he might get her a copy of one of Hockney's lightning prints because he knows she likes the artist.
I don't know.
I'm not thinking Ted and Rebecca will vow to meet at the top of the Empire State Building or anything like that. But I have long thought any revelation of feelings between Ted and Rebecca would be in the very ending of the show, just like in Sleepless in Seattle.
(*puts on clown shoes*)
Now I'm fully into the idea that a car accident, thunder and lightning, and possibly a painting...all in homage to An Affair to Remember...will play a part in the realization of feelings and ensuing confession.

Rhett and Fe catch the first flights to Aus that they can to be there for Amilia and Jake and Rhett (the little softie he is) is the first one to bring up Bob and the Baby are probably together
This is so sweet, like you drop everything, the kids and all to go help Amilia through her grief and recovery process. Chelsea goes too, as does Rhett. Bradley and Reuben say back with all the kiddos. Between the two of them they handle four kids plus Phoenix and the twins. So it’s six V’s three.
Rhett goes for Jake more than anything, the guys pretty friendly with grief, he’s lost Bob, his sister in law, his dad. So Rhett has experience in losing loved ones.
“You gotta let yourself feel it man—“ Rhett just sits on the back porch with Jake. “If you try to drown it out that griefs only gonna grow gills and learn to swim after you.”
“It feels weird to mourn someone I never knew.” Is all Jake is able to say. “I’m more concerned about Oz—we wanted kids, now that’s all just up in the air because what if she needs more surgery? Treatment? They don’t even know if they got it all or if it spread and—“ it’s the bottom lip quiver that does it for Rhett before he’s putting his beer down and slinging an arm around Jake.
“It’s all fucked.”
Meanwhile, you and Chelsea are making sure dinners all sorted and Amilia is as comfortable as she can be. She hasn’t spoken since you arrived. You can tell by the look in her eyes she doesn’t have energy. It had all been sucked out of her.
“She’s always been the one obsessed with health.” Chelsea doesn’t even look up from where she’s cutting potatoes. You just listen while you watch Jake and Rhett through the window. “Just goes to show it can happen to the best of us.” Chelsea hasn’t really had a chance to process her sisters diagnosis yet. One minute she was at home and the next she was on a plane.
But it’s ultimate Rhett who gets Amilia to speak first. He takes in some dinner for her and sits on the edge of the bed. The breakfast Jake brought her still sat untouched on the bedside table, so did lunch.
“At least they aren’t alone.” Is all he says in the silence of her bedroom. “Bob always said he’d adopt if he could, he wasn’t sure if he’d ever settle down because of work and the uncertainty of it all.”
“We hadn’t even thought of names yet.” It’s the first thing Amilia says. “Maybe Bobs already picked on out.” And in the dining room, Jake hears a small but audible laugh escape from his wife’s room. He smiles to himself wondering what Rhett was about the say that brought that sound back to life.
“Hopefully it’s better than Bradley Bradshaw, thats for damn sure.”

Young Tintin Headcanons Because I Can and I'm a Sentimental Person
Also, Tintin's mother is blind. That's my own headcanon
Tintin learnt Braille through his mother reading him Braille books while he sat on her lap. She also taught him to write formally using Braille and it's because of her that he became such a good journalist.
He loved to make paper planes and kites out of everything: newspapers, discarded letters, anything he could get his hands on. He loved to study the way birds' wings curve to catch the air and spent hours reading about how planes fly.
Every day, after school, Tintin and his mother would go to the market, buy some fruit (strawberries, oranges, apples, whatever was available) and would eat them in the park. Even when it was raining, they would eat then splash in the puddles.
Tintin's mother was kind off eccentric, but in the appreciate-the-little-things eccentric. When it stormed, she would open the windows until rain began to puddle on the floor. She would also lie in the floor a lot, either on the grass or on the carpet becay se she liked the feel of the ground below her. Tintin learnt to do the same, noticing the minutia of life that was truly special that so often gets overlooked. He loves the clouds especially.
Tintin used to ask a lot of questions (and then follow up with "why?" 5 times.) His mother never grew bored of it and always answered to the best of her ability. When she didn't know something, they would go to the library and Tintin would read aloud to her what he found.
One of Tintin's friends went to America and bought back "The Wizard of Oz" soundtrack on a record for him. His favourite song was "Over the Rainbow", but it wasn't until after the war that generalised just how sad the song was.
Tintin's hair started off a really warm, golden blond that had a couple of copper streaks when the light hit it. As he got older, his hair got darker until it grew into a solid ginger hue.
Museums. Enough said. Entire days spent wandering around, exploring the artifacts and paintings. Art museums, Natura history, modern history, science, anything. If it was a museum, Tintin had been at least once.
Tintin grew to really appreciate music. He had piano lessons, but stopped due to money and a certain war and never picked it back up again, but he loved listening to music on the radio or gramaphone, either dancing or lying on the floor staring at the ceiling. He especially loved Debussy and other impressionist musicians.
One of the reasons Tintin is such a phenomenal writer is because he became accustomed to describing the world around him and the little things happening to his mother. Describing without relying of visual explanations was difficult, but he managed to convey that sunshine was like fresh bread.
He read many classics, such as Tolkien, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Beatrix Potter, A A Milne, Mary Poppins, A Little Prince, etc. He was a very well-educated boy, despite hating school because everyone there were bullies and also he got bored very quickly writing simple sentences over and over again.
His baby teeth were crooked: his front two teeth were larger that the rest and overlapped with the other teeth. His adult teeth do the same, but much more subtly. You only notice if you stare hard enough.
Freckles. So many. That is all. Freckles.
He loved to dance. Just waving his arms about, twirling around in the living room, moving his body in any way he could to music or even just because.
He was in the Belgian resistance (Dutch-Paris network, 20th convoy and le faux soir) but if I say any more this will become too long and you will all hate me
Remember how Haddock asked Tintin if he could fly the plane and Tintin replied with "I interviewed a pilot once?" It was more of an interrogation between a British RAF pilot who had been shot down and a determined 11 year old Belgian boy in a dark basement somewhere on Rue Franklin as the pilot waited for his escape to Switzerland. Tintin had a book on planes and pestered the pilot to teach him how to fly planes until they had regular meetups in a broken garble of French and English.

I am thinking a lot about how the montage of the rest of the Richmond folks' happy endings is implied to be just Ted's dream; that is, none of that has happened yet, or may not ever happen. Given how fantastical the aesthetics of Beard's wedding are (something that should not imo be a point of joy; yes Beard loved Jane but she was awful to him, and how much worse will she be with a child in the picture? Nightmare scenario) and given the allusions to Wizard of Oz, my brain has seized upon the idea that it was all a dream. And given our final view of Ted, the implications of that are not hopeful, for me; there's something so mournful about the last shot of Ted. He is alone and isolated from the community he built and if he doesn't know what became of them I have to wonder if he ever connected with them again at all.
And it leaves me wondering, too, if perhaps the entire show was just Ted's dream. If he woke up on that plane, at the end of a trip to somewhere - perhaps to London, where he didn't actually get the job - and came home to a crumbling marriage and all the same problems he ran from intially, and none of it was real. Just a dream, to comfort himself on a long flight. There's no Dr Jake at the house when he gets there, Michelle is alone in the stands (tho Dr Jake was like. Not a good fit for her and he may just have been kicked to the curb), and Ted looks sad.
Ted is Mary Poppins, of course, appearing, changing everyone's lives for the better, leaving when they've grown enough to stand on their own, but it makes me ask questions I've never asked before.
Was Mary Poppins happy? Did she find fulfillment? Did she grieve knowing that it was her calling to love people and watch them abandon her over and over? Did she have a home, did she belong anywhere? What does it mean that we idolize her, we praise her, but we will not let her rest with us? Isn't it lovely, that she is so selfless, so that the rest of us don't have to be? Isn't it lovely, that there's one person who does all the dirty work while everyone else is happy? What about her? What about her.

Re-wrote that one chapter of Ozoplaning to have the characters react to hearing about their friend’s peril like real people bc I'm endlessly salty.
It was indeed the Ozpril, just as the Soldier with Green Whiskers had said. Even at a distance, Jellia could spell out the name on the gleaming body and, as the silvery plane came swooping toward them, she could not repress a shout of joy.
About ten feet from the crystal boulder on which she had been sitting, the Ozpril came to a gentle and perfect landing. Scarcely had the whirr and sputter of its engine died away before the door of the cabin burst open and down climbed the little Wizard of Oz, followed by Dorothy and the Scarecrow. The Cowardly Lion, last of all, had difficulty fitting his paws on the rungs and, after a trembling descent, rolled over on his back, his four feet straight up in the air. The trip had not agreed with the Cowardly Lion at all. Weak and dizzy, he made no attempt to rise. Jellia gave a cry of delight and rushed to greet her saviors. She greeted the Scarecrow with a tight hug, gave Dorothy a kiss on the head, and seized the Wizard by his hands.
“Here you are at last!” She laughed.
“Jellia, my dear!” He cried happily, “So this is where the Oztober took you!”
The Soldier with Green Whiskers came soon after Jellia, first greeting the Scarecrow with an enthusiastic handshake before swinging little Dorothy all around in his arms. He could scarcely remember a time where he’d been so relieved to see his little ruler, even with all his years of service! While these happy greetings took place, the Scarecrow began looking around in all directions, as if searching for something.
“My, but what a place!” He cried, “Beautiful! Just beautiful!”
"What's so beautiful about it?" Growled the lion without turning over. "Is there any grass? Are there any trees? Is there anything to eat?"
Dorothy made her way over to Jellia, intending to check up on her friend, when suddenly she gave a yelp that caught the attention of all the adults present. The Tell-all-escope, which she’d picked up before leaving the plane, had caught sight of Jellia which prompted it to speak.
"You are now looking at Miss Jellia Jam, formerly of Oz, at present the new Starina of the Strat, by edict of Strutoovious the Seventh. Miss Jellia Jam, Starina of Stratovania! Period! Stop, drop or point elsewhere!"
No one said anything for a moment, the Tell-all-escope having taken all of them by surprise, until Dorothy broke the silence.
“What’s a Starina?”
“Oh…it’s what that awful Strut calls his queen!” Jellia sighed.
“A queen!” Dorothy gasped, “Are you really? Oh Jellia, that's wonderful! I don’t suppose you’ll ever want to come back to Oz then, will you?”
"Well, well!" Cried the Scarecrow, who made his way over to the little maid. "Does one bow before a Starina, or does one merely kiss her hand?"
“Neither!” Jellia snapped, pulling her hand away. “Starina, Starina…I don’t ever want to hear that awful word again! I just want to go home as fast as I can!”
“Now, now, my dear.” The Wizard wagged a finger at her, “Be patient. We’ve all been flying for quite some time and we need our rest.”
“Not all of us!” The Scarecrow chimed in.
“I for one have been holed up in the cockpit of the Ozpril for around sixteen hours!” The Wizard continued, ignoring the Scarecrow. “Give us some time to rest and have a good meal and we’ll set off first thing in the morning.”
“We don’t have time for that!” Omby Amby suddenly cried, “I’m sorry sir, but we’re all in terrible danger!”
“Danger?” The Wizard repeated, “What sort of dangers could be lurking in a place as lovely as this?”
"That's what Nick thought too…” Jellia said somberly.
“Nick?” The Wizard repeated.
“Where is Nick, anyhow?” The Scarecrow said, having spent much of the last few minutes looking for his companion, “Wasn’t he in the Oztober with you?”
“He was…” Jellia nodded, “But he…he…”
The little maid covered her face, having become too choked up to continue. This did nothing to inspire confidence in the others, who turned to the Soldier with Green Whiskers instead. Having everyone’s eyes on him made Omby Amby clam up somewhat, opening his mouth before closing it just as quickly.
“Where’s the Tin Woodman?” Dorothy asked. “Has something happened to him?”
The Soldier tried to speak once more but the fear in his little ruler’s eyes caused him to lose his nerve again.
“Where is Nick?” Demanded the Scarecrow. “Tell us!”
It took several minutes of prodding before Omby Amby worked up the nerve to tell them what had happened. Indeed, it took both the Wizard and the Scarecrow shaking him on both sides before the soldier told them the whole story.
“The Tin Woodman has been captured!” He cried. “The leader of Stratovania has taken him hostage in the Oztober and intends to invade our country and overthrow Ozma and rob the Emerald City of its treasures!”
A hush fell over the Ozians as the soldier’s words sank in. Dorothy, who’d covered her mouth in horror, looked over to Jellia who could only nod in confirmation. The Scarecrow stumbled backwards, looking positively sick. The Wizard held his head in his hand and stared at the ground beneath him. In the end, the one to break the silence was none other than the Cowardly Lion.
“Dear me!” He began to cry. “Poor Nick! Poor Ozma!”
The lion’s shout snapped the Scarecrow out of his trance and he quickly turned back towards Omby Amby.
“How could you let this happen?!” He demanded.
“Me?” The soldier cried, “What was I to do?”
“Why, you’re a soldier!” The stuffed man yelled back. “It’s your job to protect Oz’s royalty, is it not? You should’ve protected the emperor at all costs!”
“B-But see here!” The soldier stammered, “He had a thousand airmen with him! I couldn’t very well fight them all off on my own, now could I?”
“You didn’t even try, did you?” The Scarecrow practically spat. “And now the emperor of the winkies could be lost to us! You should be ashamed of yourself!”
Omby Amby said nothing to this, simply casting his gaze downward in shame.
“Don’t talk to him like that!” Jellia Jamb said, making her way over to the two. “There was nothing he could’ve done to save Nick and blaming him now won’t bring his highness back!”
The Scarecrow turned to Jellia, ready to argue with her, until Dorothy took his hand into her own.
“Jellia’s right. Standing here blaming each other while our friends are in danger won’t solve anything! We have to catch up with the Oztober!”
All eyes turned to the Wizard, who could only hold up his hands in defense.
“W-Wait, now see here! I’d like to remind you that i’ve been flying for sixteen hours already! Do any of you realize what sixteen hours of flying does to a man?!”
“But Mr Wizard!” Dorothy cried, “We haven’t a moment to lose! Ozma’s in trouble! A whole horde of airmen are on their way to Oz right now! We have to hurry before something terrible happens to her!”
“And Nick!” The Scarecrow added, “Who knows what they’re doing to him right now? He could be hurt! They might’ve dented him or scratched his plating or thrown him to the sea or-! Or-!”
The Scarecrow held his head in his hands as horrible scenario after horrible scenario filled his sawdust brains. Though he could feel no pain, the straw man was practically going sick with worry while little Dorothy looked ready to cry. And why shouldn’t they be so upset? The most important people in their lives were in terrible danger and neither of them knew what to do. Jellia approached Dorothy at least, placing her hands on the girl’s shoulders to try and steady her. For his part, Omby Amby stared at the Scarecrow as he began to pace around, uncertain if he should try to approach the stuffed man or not. The Wizard heaved a sigh.
“Quite right…I suppose it can’t be helped.” He looked over to Jellia. “My dear, do you remember what direction the Oztober took off in?”
“Why, yes!” The little maid yelped. “They went off in the same direction we came in, and the one you came in, but backwards!”
“Then that’s the direction we’ll be going.” He turned and walked back to the Ozpril.
“Wait! We’re going now?” The Cowardly Lion cried. “But we’ve only just gotten off the plane and air travel disagrees with me so!”
“Oh, where’s your courage?” The Scarecrow snapped at him. “You ought to think more of our friends and less of your own cowardly hide!”
“Scarecrow!” Jellia yelled, putting her hands on her hips.
The stuffed man said nothing to her, only stomped off to join the Wizard in the Ozpril. Jellia sighed, the Scarecrow really wasn’t taking this well. Though she could sympathize with his worry, his anger certainly wasn’t helping matters!
“Jellia?”
The Oz maid turned her attention to Dorothy, who looked up at her with a frightened expression. The older woman took the princess in her arms.
“Don’t you worry, my dear. The Tin Woodman can handle himself and Princess Ozma has faced threats far worse than some silly airmen. Everything is going to be alright, I promise.”
Dorothy said nothing more. She merely smiled and walked back onto the Ozpril, hand-in-in with Jellia Jamb. The Cowardly Lion soon joined them, trudging back up the stairs of the Ozpril with a groan. Omby Amby was the last to join them, pausing on the top step to look back on the kingdom of Stratovania. As the sun began to break over the horizon, Jellia’s words echoed through his thoughts.
Everything is going to be alright, I promise.
“Jellia…don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
That was all he said before rejoining the others on the Ozpril, shutting the door behind him.

Chapter 12: Finale
The sun seeped through the curtains, pastel yellow beams flickering in Javier’s eyes, awakening him to a new world. The mundane sepia had switched overnight to technicolor like a scene straight out of The Wizard of Oz.
A grin curled on his lips at the measured puffs of air skimming his chest, your legs twined in his. Nudging his nose at the crown of your head and breathing in the scent of you, his fingertips stroked the planes of soft skin exposed by your camisole nightdress. Making a warm fuzzy feeling wrap around him, perfectly content to stay right here forever; tucked safe and sound under the weight of you, immersed in the intimacy of it all.
It was a feeling he never before experienced, not even with Lorraine and made him wonder how he lived without it.
You stirred with soft morning mumbles and his hold on you tightened as if to tell you he was still there. Lashes fluttered against his skin, heavy eyes opening as you nuzzled further into his chest. Looking down, he found sleep-happy eyes blinking up and a grin which mirrored his own.
“Morning,” he grumbled against your hair, placing a kiss at the top of your head. You returned his affection, tenderly dragging your lips along his pecs and tracing your fingertips across his ribs.
“You sleep alright?” You asked.
He nodded. “Best I’ve slept in decades.”
“Really? Cause, I never took you as a cuddle sleeper.” You teased and he snorted out a laugh.
“Neither did I,” he said while wiggling his numb fingers, “But don’t get used to it, my arm can’t take it every night.”
“I can live with once a week,” you giggled. “What time is it?” Javier craned his neck to look over at the bedside clock.
“A quarter till 10.”
“Shit,” you hissed and rolled away from the warmth of his arms and out of bed before he could pull you back in.
Javier shifted, sitting up. “Got plans?”
“For once, yes,” you scoffed, wrapping the silk robe around your body and tying the sash in a lazy bow. “I told Marie I’d get brunch with her a few days ago. You know to give her the low down about the party.” You chuckled, more to yourself then to him as the closet doors squeaked open. “Man is she gonna eat this up.”
Javier leaned forward, the comforter cinched between his lower torso and chest. “In a good way?” His lips twisted in worry, you’d surely told her all about his mess up and he suddenly wondered her opinion.
“Oh, in a very good way,” you said, glancing behind your shoulder for a second before returning to sift through the hangars. “She’s wanted us together since she met you at the bookstore. Well, actually I think at that time she wanted you for herself, but she got over that the moment we started hanging out.” You pulled out a pair of biker shorts, heading to the dresser to grab a t-shirt.
“So, you’re gonna tell her we’re together?”
You turned on your heels, suddenly appearing small as you wrung the t-shirt in your hands. “If that’s alright.”
Javier immediately reached for your hand, pulling you towards the end of the bed, realizing the question came out all wrong.
“Of course,” he assured and a smile ghosted your lips as you gave in, sitting on your knees in front of him. “I just didn’t know. I’m new to this, it’s been awhile since I’ve been a…boyfriend.”
The word felt foreign on his tongue and almost silly to say. Was he too old to be someone’s boyfriend? What’s another word? Partner? Ew – no, that reminded him too much of Steve. Or even worse – Joe.
“Oh, so you’re my boyfriend?” His brows arched with a twitch of a smile, he liked it when you said it, especially with that teasing lilt as you leaned in closer.
“If that’s okay with you.” The words fanned across your mouth, his lips nipping yours. You hummed through the soft, lingering kiss and his arms wrapped around your body, feeling the silhouette through the slinky thin material. His lips trailed to your neck.
“Javi, we can’t,” you moaned, but did little to stop him as your fingers raked through his hair while his kisses trailed to your collarbone, sweeping your shoulders. Insatiable, he couldn’t get even despite having you two more times last night – once after eating cold lo mein, taking you right then and there, desperately hard and fast across the kitchen counter – the second time slower and more intimate before drifting off to sleep.
He groaned as he palmed the soft flesh of your thighs, his teeth grazing over the skinny silk strap. “I’m gonna be late.”
“How long till you gotta leave?” He asked while roaming up to cup your ass and squeezing. Your head rolling back as he toyed with the string of your thong, pulling it tight to your swelling clit to give you an ounce of friction. “Baby, how long?”
“I’m thinking. You’re making it incredibly hard to focus.” He chuckled darkly, smiling into your chest as your hips rolled and brows pinched in thought. “I need to shower and, oooh. Makeup, Javi.”
He teased the soft material at your seam up to your clit and when your hips bucked into his growing cock, his voice turned raspy – sinfully deep.
“Hmmm, seems like those are optional,” his tongue flicked over your clothed nipple and you shivered as a tinge of wetness imprinted the fabric. “Smell perfect to me,” he flicked the other. “So beautiful, you don’t need any makeup.” His hand slipped into your panties and your head burrowed into his neck with a soft mewl. “But, you’re so wet, don’t you think this needs to be taken care of?”
“You got a point,” you said with a breathless giggle, and Javier could feel you smiling against the tender skin of his neck. He sunk one, then two fingers into your tight cunt, your walls clamping around them and soaking his fingers as he languidly pumped in and out.
“Is that a yes, baby? He asked, swiping his thumb over your clit. “Want me to take care of you?” His fingers curled to hit the perfect spot, and you whined at the precision of his strokes and the flickering friction he supplied to your bundle of nerves.
“Please, Javi.”
There was no way he could ever deny the keen in your voice, the desperate hold you had on both his heart and the digging clutch to his shoulders. His lips captured yours in a searing kiss and he poured every ounce of passion and love into it, frantically searching out your tongue and tangling himself into you – drinking down every moan and pant of his name while working you up to a quick climax.
“Need you - inside of me,” You whimpered as his thumb continued to swirl around your oversensitive clit. A quip about your time restraint latched onto the tip of his tongue, but disintegrated at how needy and determined you looked, lifting and shifting your hips, eagerly sinking down on his cock until you were flush against him.
Every hair on his body stood at attention when your slick-soaked walls clenched around his bare cock, moaning your name, his arms wrapping around you, palms exploring the expanse of your back. Grinding down on his cock, you chased a second orgasm, slipping your hand between the sweat of your tangled bodies to draw tight and fast circles on your clit.
His brain short-circuited at the sight, making his mouth ramble. Babbling out praises as moans flew from the O-shape of your mouth. Massaging your breasts, he pinched your nipples and the word Mine popped into his hazy mind. It was all his and he was all yours, and the unbelievable thought pushed him closer to the edge.
“Come on, baby,” he said in a husky voice, “Wanna feel you come, need to feel you come on my cock.” You gasped as his large hands dug into your hips, guiding you up and down on his cock. “Look at me,” he ordered and your lust-blown eyes met his loving gaze and your cunt fluttered, clenching him tighter and tighter as a gush of slick coated his cock. His lips surged to yours, hardly meeting you in a kiss before he was groaning into your mouth, the wave of ecstasy pulsing through him and filling your cunt.
The sound of your ragged breathing binded to his, mixing with the chirping of birds outside.
“You’re gonna be the death of me,” you said with a breathless smile.
He chuckled, “The feelings mutual.”
---
Marie looked unamused as you frantically waved through the tables of people in the busy restaurant. Thanking the hostess for pointing in the right direction before scurrying off.
“I’m so sorry. I’m late, I know.” You sank down into the wicker chair and shoved the big-rim sunglasses atop your head.
“You better have a good excuse,” Marie sarcastically huffed, and you couldn’t help but smile, knowing she was soon to be falling out of her chair with excitement.
The waiter rushed over, introducing themselves while pouring coffee in your cup. As Marie ordered you scanned the menu, picking an item in a matter of seconds before handing over the flimy paper with a gracious smile.
Marie took a sip of the bitter black liquid, eyeing you conspicuously over the rim of her mug.
“What?” You brushed the sides of your mouth, “Is something on my face?”
You’d stayed in Javier’s arms for far longer than you should’ve but it was hard to leave his embrace, the soft kisses and I love you’s made you weak, powerless to wiggle away and head out the door.
She shook her head, “No, something seems weird with you,” she tapped on her lips. “I don’t know what it is, but you look…different.”
“How so?” You cleverly asked, wanting to hear her answer. Playing coy, you swirled your spoon, the liquid blending into a neutral tan. The metal sang as you tapped it on the ceramic brim before picking it up and taking a sip.
Her lips quirked as she examined your freshly fucked aura, leaning back in her chair at the hard to hide smile that was basically pulled to your eyes. You saw the wheels turning in her mind, ideas she couldn’t believe and debated on voicing aloud, in case she was wrong.
“Okay, fine fine. I’ll tell you. Javier and I are together,” you said with a giddy clap and a little wiggle, unable to contain yourself any longer. Even hearing yourself say it out loud was enough to make you swoon.
Marie’s hand clasped over her mouth, but did little to hide the drop of her jaw.
“Shut up, shut up. Oh my god, shut up.” She squealed and squeezed your hand. “Tell me everything, and when I say everything, I mean everything.”
You spilled about the party first, the longing stares that led to his emotional apology/plea in the kitchen. She dabbed her eyes at his confession in the moonlight of your door, sadly just as you were into the dirty details the waiter dropped off your food, but Marie quickly picked up right where you left off. Hanging onto every word and shoving food in her mouth like it was popcorn at a movie.
“So that’s why you were late,” Marie said with a wiggle of her brows while ripping into a piece of bacon.
You bit your lip then giggled like a schoolgirl who just got caught. “Can you blame me?”
“No.” She huffed. “I should be lucky you didn’t just stand me up. If Javier was naked in my bed, you wouldn’t see me for years.”
You barked out a laugh. “Oh, trust me the thought came into my mind. But, what can I say? I’m a good friend,” you said with a cocky roll of your eyes.
“The best,” Marie smiled, knowing you’d finally found your match.
---
The crunching of gravel was the last thing Chucho wanted to hear on this particular Friday, but there it was.
He’d finished up his chores for the evening barely twenty minutes ago, deciding to crack open a beer and sit next to his wife’s rocking chair on the front porch as he waited out to see if Javier would show. Wiping the sweat from his brow, Chucho turned to the empty chair next to his as the rim of his son’s jeep peeked from behind the bend, the harsh yellow beam coating his windshield, and covering (what he expected) was the fallen face of his son.
“Guess it didn’t go well,” he said into the thin air. A strong gust of wind swayed the chair back and forth and he took the creaking wood as a sign that he was right.
When he didn’t hear from Javier all week, he hoped that things had gone well or were improving, and while he’d never turn his son away and cherished the time together, he hated to think it was really over between the two of you.
Chuco’s knees popped with a groan as he stood up, stretching above his head before planting his hands on his waist. He waved to his son, but as the shade of the oak trees covered the sun, his hand stalled in the air and he squinted at the passenger side and what appeared to be a shadow.
A gasp of his wife’s name fell from his open mouth when he spotted the smile on Javier’s face, the one which matched yours and a salty residue surged in the back of his throat like a tidal wave. Gulping it down, his hand cut through the windless air as a smile stretched across the wrinkles of his sun-tired skin. As the jeep parked, Chucho barreled down the concrete steps like an excited child, much like Javier did when his father returned from a weekend expo.
“Hey Pops,” Javier yelled over the car, “I hope you don’t mind, brought a guest with me. You remember her, right?”
Chucho said your name, like a prayer, one that’d been answered as his son wrapped his arm around your shoulders and stole a loving glance that reminded him of how he once looked at his wife, so many years ago before turning back to the glassy-eyed older gentleman.
“Hey Chucho,” you smiled, a smile which no one could steal away from your lips and Chucho’s heart bursted at the seams.
“So, I assume the party went well?” He asked and when he looked at his son, he realized the weight he carried around on his shoulders like a pack mule had lessened, his eyes were clearer and while there would always be a small pain of memories which could never truly fade, a new hope glistened in them.
“You could say that,” you giggled and Javier kissed the top of your head, mumbling about the bags before heading over to the trunk. You stepped towards Chucho and he couldn’t help but wrap his arms around you.
“Thank you,” he whispered and looked up to the cloudless sky.
---
Javier squeezed your thigh under the table as Chucho came into the room with a platter of burritos he’d popped in the oven; his aunt Paula had brought over a gallon sized ziplock bag of them earlier in the week.
While passing a few side dishes and the foil wrapped burritos around in a circle before digging in, Chucho asked a few questions to find out how it happened and got the PG version, much like everyone else aside from Marie.
Chucho wiped the sides of his mouth, “Have you told Joe?” He asked.
You nodded, putting up a single finger as you swallowed. “We did on Tuesday. I was already going over for dinner, so I brought Javier along. He was pretty shocked at first not gonna lie, my sister-in-law was over the moon though.”
Javier chuckled internally at the memory of Joe’s face when opening the door to find his little sister and his commitment phobe ex-partner holding hands. While Joe fought to keep upright, Ruby pulled the both of you into a squealing hug then spun around to rub it in her husband’s face, boasting all night about how she totally knew it.
As Javier grabbed a container of leftover casserole and you kissed your niece and nephew goodbye, Joe morphed into a protective older brother and patted him on the back with a warning, If you hurt her I’ll kill you. It lasted only a second, turning back into a friend and letting him know how happy it made him to see not just his sister but Javier like this, like a piece of his old self had been found after missing for so long.
“So, he knew before me?” He teased his son, and Javier snorted while shaking his head.
“Yes, but we wanted to wait till we saw you,” he said while looking over at you.
“Well, I’m happy for you two.” He took a drink of his Coke, “You know, I knew he liked you even though he refused to say so.”
“Oh, really?” You asked, nudging Javier.
“Dad,” Javier said like he was a teenager again.
“No, please. Tell me more,” you cradled your chin in your hand and leaned over to listen to an all too eager Chucho, who talked and talked until the plates were clean.
Chucho and Javier gathered the dishes as you trotted off to shower. Once the shower was running, Chucho turned to his son who was spraying the dishes.
“She the one?” Chucho asked, and Javier shrugged with a telling smile.
“We’ve been together less than a week, Pops.” He handed Chucho the clean dish to wipe down.
“Doesn’t matter, I knew the moment I met your mama she was the one.” Javier continued to work at the stack of dishes, but his lips twitched with a smile – he could recite his parents love story like a child’s favorite book having heard it so many times. “You know, I still have her ring.” That grabbed his attention, and he stopped scrubbing, setting down the plate with the rest, hearing a clattering clink as he looked over at his father. “Look, I know it’s too soon,” he said before Javier could interject, “But, if the time comes and that’s what you want, I have it. You could even get a new diamond, something a little bigger if you wanted.”
Javier knew his father had bought the ring using every dime he had saved at the time which wasn’t much, the ring wasn’t anything grand just a single diamond on a silver band, but his mother didn’t care – too young and in love, she wore it with pride everyday until she passed.
“You’d be alright with that?” Javier asked, knowing his father kept the ring next to their wedding picture on her nightstand.
“It’s what she would’ve wanted,” Chucho said, “You know, she was never a huge fan of Lorraine.”
“Really? She never said anything.” Javier couldn’t believe his father nor his mother never said a word.
“Don’t get me wrong, she liked the girl but I think she knew that you weren’t right for eachother. That there was someone better for you out there, someone like her. Hmm, if only she could’ve met her, she would’ve loved her.” Chucho’s voice cracked, tears glistening in his dark brown eyes.
“I know,” Javier said with a small nod then turned back to the dishes. The two worked in a somber silence until the last dish was dried down and put away. When the shower shut off, Javier knew he had but a minute before you appeared and looked to his father.
“I’ll take it,” Javier said and his father’s eyes grew big, he grabbed his son’s shoulder and gave it a small shake. “Don’t get too excited, it’s not gonna happen anytime soon.”
Six months later, Javier proposed.
A/N: Thank you to everyone who has read this series, I seriously have loved working on this. I struggled to finish this up because I didn't feel ready to say goodbye, so I decided to write a sequel (Javi's Having a Baby) so be on the lookout for that!

Soooooooo my theory that the relic of choice aka the crown is in the tree combined with Chpater 8 and someone’s post that suggest the Cat is the crown’s keeper, like Jinn is to the lamp, I now wonder. Is the Ever After a place that Oz put the crown in, OR is the Ever After the void area where the relic lives. Jinn / the lamp was in that desert place so is the Ever After just. A much more invoked plane? OR is this some Brothers Grimm creation that Oz got the location of.
Bc I’m now almost 100% the crown is here and also that one post convinced me the cat is the keeper of the crown. So that just leaves what the Ever After is and how it came to be. And also the real story of Alyx and Lewis
