Hob responded to the DM he got from @.TheArtofDreaming because it was by far the most interesting response he had gotten within 48 hours of posting that video with him saying he would do a fake relationship call. Wordsmithing aside, the fact that Dream had just laid out what was pretty much the exact kind of gig Hob had wanted when he made the silly thing was just serendipitous. Honestly, at first pass Hob had not at all expected @.TheArtofDreaming to be AMAB. It had been a pleasant surprise. Not that Hob had lied about his sexuality–no, he was as 3 of a 3 on the Kinsey Scale as one could get–but after Eleanor it has just been… harder. With people who presented more feminine. Not for lack of interest, but there was a lot of baggage to sort through. In contrast, texting with Dream was easy: he was engaging, responsive, thoughtful, and quick-witted. They were both passionate about what they did, for work and for play. So, yeah, lunch seemed like a great idea and maybe he could end up being friends with one of his favorite museum’s curators! Maybe he could even get a behind-the-scenes tour someday. Oh, what simple goals that naive Hob had set.

Basically the start to the next chapter of If I could tell the stars about you which is honestly taking me too long to finish.

Kyle was surprised when Alex had asked for a ride to see Michael, well technically to pick up his car from the junkyard but the former was an inevitable consequence. He didn’t think Alex would have even considered taking his advice and talk to the cowboy. Sometimes he was too careful for his own good. Maybe it was the training of a soldier that lead to him to always calculating risk before he jumped. But when Kyle really thought about, it was more likely growing up in the Manes household that had resulted in his cautious nature. 

“Two minutes,” The airman muttered from behind his makeshift setup on the kitchen counter. Kyle made himself comfortable in the stool opposite him. Seeing his friend behind a mountain of paperwork and glued to his computer screen was not a rare sight for Kyle. He had lived with Alex Manes for a little over a year and had discovered how little sleep and how much coffee the man could survive on.

“So, you made up with Guerin?”

Alex looked up from his laptop then, but he shrugged and murmured a vague denial stating simply his car broke down. 

Humming with a sly smile, Kyle decided to push it, “Is there something else going on?”

“No not really.” Kyle would’ve believed him if it wasn’t for the red creeping up to his ears and the aggressive spinning of his pen.

“Is he not as straight as advertised?”

The pen clattered to the ground. “Ok, I’m done.” Alex stood up shutting his laptop, “Let’s go.” 

“Ok, ok I’m sorry.” Kyle followed his friend out the front door, laughing at the reaction he’d elicited. “Do you think he’d punch me again if he saw me?”

Guerin lifted himself from under the hood of a minivan as he observed the duo pull in. The cowboy took a deep inhale preparing himself before calling them over to Alex’s car. Kyle got a look 'be nice' before getting out to meet him by the Jeep. He followed Alex with caution, not actually believing Michael would punch him again,  but that there was still an awkward tension in the air.

“So Guerin. Sorry about the…” He gestured to his cheek. “Shouldn’t have reacted that way.”

Michael shrugged, “Probably shouldn’t have punched you first.” 

Alex was inspecting at the open engine, pretending he wasn’t listening to their conversation. Michael walked over to his side, “The timer belt needed a replacement. The water and oil have also been topped up, so you’ll be good for a while.”

“Thanks Michael,” Alex smiled, “I really appreciate this.”

“No worries,” Michael smiled back passing him the keys, unconsciously lingering for a moment where he met Alex’s fingertips, before they both brusquely pulled away and Alex got in. Kyle glanced at the cowboy staring at Alex, a pitiful look on his face. The airman completely oblivious as he tried turning the engine on. 

“All good?” 

“All good,” Alex repeated before getting out. “Thanks again.”

“If you keep saying thanks, I’m going think you like me,” instantaneously regretting the words coming out of his own mouth. Michael walking away from the jeep, he tried to brush off the failed attempt at a joke, “Only have to say it once.”

Alex’s dark eyes widened, rubbing the back of his neck he too desperately needed to change the topic, “How much do I owe you?”

Kyle furrowed his brows, watching the interaction between the two realised something that they hadn’t yet. In between all the awkwardness, fighting and avoidance, they actually like each other. He decided to take his leave as the two finally settled the bill. Michael looked like he’d almost forgotten the doctor’s presence till he said his goodbye.
