14) What is something you wrote in a fic that you are hoping readers picked up on but you don't know if they did? And/or, what is something that you were excited that readers did pick up on?

To be completely honest, there's a TON of little things I put in that are up to reader interpretation or that I'm not certain if people will pick up on lol

A lot of you have probably noticed that I sometimes have Ash refer to himself using words like "thing" instead of "person," but this goes into even the grammar he uses sometimes. Technically, you should use "who" if it's a named animal or a person, and "that" if it's an unnamed animal or an object. The way I often have newer writers think about this is how dehumanizing it sounds to say "the woman that my father married" versus "the woman whom my father married" if you're talking about a step-mother.

I frequently have Ash refer to himself using minor grammar changes that would normally refer to an animal or object, even in points post-canon where he's stopped consciously calling himself an object. Ash, with the education he has, would of course know the difference, but I often have him use dehumanizing language for himself without him even noticing it.

Interestingly, the reason I thought to bring this one up specifically is because I actually comment on this in chapter one of my next multi-chapter AU that I'm working on, in which Ash is an author:

He wonders if his readers pick up on those little differences that he throws into his writing sometimes. When a character calls themselves that instead of who in a sentence. His agent notices, of course—that's part of Jessica's job, after all—and Ash thinks that after enough times of him switching her corrections back, she realized what he was trying to accomplish. It wasn't a typo—some characters just genuinely think of themselves as an object.

Ash would know.

lesbian ivy and her relationship to jason

(based on my experiences as a lesbian)

jason is canonically a well liked guy. he’s respectful, attractive, talented, etc…emphasis on respectful for this one. ivy constantly feels like nobody actually sees her — like she’s just a body or a pretty face to most people. jason is possibly the first person she’s ever shown interest in* who didn’t make her feel objectified.

*not counting matt cause she only flirts with him to get him to agree to things (the rave) and whether he actually sees her or not is debatable, but a whole other topic. also ignoring their kiss in the 2013 la production cause ????? it makes no sense

one kiss is when she makes a move and it’s after they had already been rehearsing r+j; so she’s already had to act as if he’s her love interest — and being a teenager playing a romantic lead can often lead to confusing feelings and showmances that aren’t actually based on anything real.

during one kiss jason does not jump at the opportunity to kiss her, or try to make her do anything more. he is the “golden boy” and probably the first person to treat her with respect in a situation like that — of course she’s going to convince herself she’s in love with him; society has made her feel like she should be because he’s the “perfect guy.” plus young people mistaking strong feelings of friendship and respect/platonic adoration for something romantic isn’t uncommon.

i think she sings touch my soul because she truly does feel seen by him and better with him in her life, but that’s not romantic. it’s just because he treats her like a human being.

also (as @theawkwardone6 said) after she slept with him she probably felt ashamed since she’s spent so long hating her reputation yet now she’s had sex with her roommate’s brother who she’s not even dating. she really wanted it to be love so she wouldn’t become just some anecdote again. she didn’t want it to be like all the other times she’s been with a guy and then they never interact again.

“if she’s a lesbian why would she get with so many guys? she says it herself in touch my soul.” the same reason jason sleeps with her — she’s trying to prove something to herself.

🏅 What is the fic you’re most proud of?

a while back i started writing a bare au in which they performed macbeth instead of romeo and juliet, i never finished it, but i handed what i managed to get done in as english coursework (it’s funny because i actually started writing it to avoid a different piece of english coursework).

my teacher gave me 30/30 for it so yeah that’s my answer!
