Happy Friday. Once in a while I’ll stumble upon unknown artists that deserve world recognition, like @itsmerchant and @thejazzemu. It makes me wonder if high quality music is really all it takes. Oh life. Their music deserves millions of monthly listeners.
How does one break through? I thought I knew, but I don’t.
Regarding “Munchies” - lyrical inspiration: food. The focus on junk food lyrics in GoBoy 5 actually led to me eating far more junk food than usual for a solid year (as explained in post 83). Taco Bell, McDonalds, Ben & Jerry’s, Doritos, etc. I only stopped after developing a couple health issues related to diet. Those health issues cleared up after a few months of strict paleo dieting.
The term “munchies” is associated with cannabis. I definitely went through a heavy smoking phase from ages 20-22. I probably smoke every 6 to 12 months while on vacation nowadays.
Recorded about ten takes of me orgasming / climaxing into a microphone for the verses. What you hear is the best take.
The verses were originally meant to be melodic. No matter what I tried, I wasn’t able to get the verse melodies to sound good, so I deleted them, put this song on the back burner and moved on to “Face Tattoo.” A few days later, the idea arose of adding food related sound effects, followed by orgasm / climax sounds. That seemed to work.
Regarding the sound effects, I worked as a sound designer for the film industry once upon a time (as explained in post 82). While there, I learned how to create/manipulate sound effects. That skill was utilized in “Munchies,” along with songs like “Magic Unicorn,” “Mermaids,” “Coffee Song” and “Food Song.”
Originally, this was going to be a 2+ minute song. With it’s gimmicky, simplistic nature, I didn’t think it deserved a 2+ minute runtime.
Beat + bass + melody. That’s the style of GoBoy 5 (this paragraph is an excerpt from post 80). While I’ve appreciated this minimalistic style for years, “Tell My Mama (Song 42)” was the first time trying it. I went whole-hog with GoBoy 5, in which most songs primarily consist of a beat, bass and melody.
In April, 2021, almost all of GoBoy 3, 4 and 5 songs were restructured to be under 2m 30s, including this song. In an attempt to increase replay value in this streaming era, most of GoBoy’s songs are now purposely around 2m 20s.
A bass boost was added to songs 37-99 in Nov, 2021, while I had covid (this paragraph is an excerpt from post 38). As a result, this song feels more powerful. The bass boost isn’t a simple plugin nonchalantly added to each song. It’s a process that took about 3.5 hours per song, or one whole month to complete all songs. Admittedly, I pushed the bass boost a little too far for some of them. The bass in some songs sounds like a freaking earthquake (unnecessarily pronounced low frequencies 20 - 50 Hz). Might dial that back someday. The bass boost was also applied to every song on GoBoy 6 and beyond.
