Text
I wanna be writing rn but I started drawing their art festival outfits us I’m a procrastinator. Then all this Velma stuff happened and I can’t focus because i hyperfixated on scooby doo a lot as a kid so I’m kinda breaking down over what they’ve done.

Phineas and Ferb and What’s New Scooby Doo easily have the best cartoon themes ever, Ducktales (2017) takes a close third. I’d give the #4 spot to Darkwing Duck, and #5 to the og Animaniacs

“Wander and Mater, How I Made My Two Favorite Animated Characters Brothers, The TRUE Story!” Written by WanderFan2000.
or WanderFan2000′s CRAZY origin story of how she made Wander and Mater brothers all the way back in high school. The Story: It was the year 2016…
My favorite Disney animated series, Wander Over Yonder was starting off with the second part of The Dominator Saga, which in this case, this tale takes place on February 8, 2016. The date when the episodes, The Cartoon and The Bot aired. (I wasn’t exactly a He-Man fan, because as we Wander fans remember The Cartoon was Lord Hater created a cartoon to impress Dominator and the whole thing was definitely a love letter to the old 80s shows we grew up with like He-Man: Masters of the Universe and even Scooby Doo.) Okay, I’m getting off topic here, so let’s move onto the part where things got interesting.
It all began after seeing the Cartoon Wander on my TV screen for the first time and the MOMENT when I saw him riding Cartoon Sylvia, this is what I whispered to myself:
Tumblr media
“I knew it! I knew they (Wander and Mater) were brothers!” - WanderFan2000 on February 8th, 2016.
When the newest WOY episodes were over that night and during the next day at school, I kept thinking about Cartoon Wander, how he definitely reminded me a LOT about Mater…
Then in about one second: a brand new obsession was BORN!
The Drawings and Fan Art: After witnessing Cartoon Wander and ever so slowly becoming obsessed with the design, I decided to draw it along with Mater, (also in a space traveler form):
Tumblr media
The design your looking at here is actually the SECOND design for Mater in the WOY universe. Also, the buckteeth is a reference to Cartoon Wander as well.  But aside from the newly redesign I made for Mater, his brotherly adventures didn’t begin with him as a space traveler. They actually started when I settled on the final drawing design for the tow truck, which was the Little Golden Book form:
Tumblr media
I kept drawing this design a lot:
Tumblr media
Wander worried for Mater after he ate hot Wasabi.
Tumblr media
Wander and Mater having fun with each other.  But Mater didn’t start out as his LGB design, Mater started out with Wander, originally in his somewhat “3D” design I did for the tow truck:
Tumblr media
Wander and Mater doing a crossover in Mater and the Ghostlight.
The Disney Pixar Brothers: After drawing Wander and Mater as brothers for…quite a while in high school, I decided on giving them both a name. Hitting Wander was from Disney and Mater was from Pixar, I suddenly came up with a name that was PERFECT for them: The Disney Pixar Brothers!  During this time, I loved quoting the ending quote from Epic Mickey, because it genuinely fits for Wander and Mater, bounding as brothers:
Tumblr media
The Disney Pixar Brothers.
Tumblr media
Wander and Mater: The Disney Pixar Brothers.
I sure had fun with drawing Wander and Mater as brothers. But until noticing that it was still hard for me to draw Mater as a tow truck, I settled on a new design for him, a space traveler!
Tow Mater: The Space Traveler:
Mater’s OG space traveler design didn’t have a hat like he has now, but I couldn’t find ANY of my OG Mater space traveler designs, so I decided to show pictures his new current design.
Basically, Mater’s space traveler form consists of two things, his patched up hat to his dark blue shoes. Wander gave Mater his hat after encountering the Lemon Cars for the first time in an old BW city, complete with a Disney Store. (This was actually something I had going on in my brain back in 2016, because I have a CRAZY imagination!)
As I was giving Mater’s new form a go, there was no doubt he had a BUNCH of new adventures alongside Wander:
Tumblr media
Mater and Wander recreating a deleted scene from Cars 2.
Tumblr media
Definitely every little brother with their big brothers. XD (Also, OG space traveler design of Craig McCracken.)
Tumblr media
Mater and Wander doing a scene from Cars: Mater-National Championship. (I watched this cutscene on YT tons of time as a kid.)
A Bond Between Two Brothers, The Cancelled Novel:
During my new obsession with drawing Wander and Mater as brothers, I decided on one thing: write a novel about them. The novel was officially called: A Bond Between Two Brothers, which was going to be an origin story of how Wander and Mater become brothers. I still remember drawing a book cover for the story. I was ready to set out and write it, it unfortunately never came to be and A Bond Between Two Brothers was left on the drawing broad…But who knows? Maybe I’ll bring this old novel back someday…
Into The Dark Ages:
As many cartoons I came across, they always had those “dark elements” I love witnessing, whenever it’s Wander getting scared by the Phantomimes in The Heebie Jeebies or Mater getting captured in Cars 2. I knew I could definitely make some dark pictures featuring the brothers, better yet, pictures that would crush their spirits…
Tumblr media
I always had these ideas where Wander was in the Cars 2 universe, trying to rescue Mater from his captivity, but he ends up too late to rescue his brother, unfortunately, that can’t give me the idea of drawing Wander holding Mater as Mater gives a tried and defeated expression while Wander giving a terrified and scared expression at Mater’s captives. NTM, this is a trend that I still draw today.  The Conclusion:
As I mentioned before, Wander and Mater’s brotherly bond have DEFINITELY took them to new heights, even in my fan made series, they love to refer to themselves as brothers. It’s funny how one simple episode from WOY gave me the inspiration to make Wander and Mater as brothers.
Plus, even in this new decade: Wander and Mater will ALWAYS be brothers!  The End.

I don't think agree with that though. You can use a older franchise without it being made for the audience that grew up on it. The new pokemon series doesn't need Ash to be a adult in a "mature" pokemon story. A new teen titans doesn't need to be like the original or care at all about those who grew up on the originals. It's just a kids show using characters new to them in the same way the OG titans were new to us, even though even older fans grew up on the comics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You absolutely can change up old stories — and creators obviously do — I'm just saying no one should be surprised if adults are disappointed in the creation when it airs. And I think that disappointment is valid. Really, I think we're talking about two very different things here. There's a massive difference between adults becoming so obsessed with children's media that they try to cut the kids out of it completely and adults who say, "Hey, you made a really bad cartoon and I wish you hadn't because the original means a lot to me." What this conversation hasn't considered thus far are the good reboots that please both adults and kids (and getting enjoyment doesn't have to be because it's "made for" the adults in terms of grittiness. Adults enjoy standard cartoons too): Scooby Doo, Batman, and She-Ra to name just three. In most cases it's not really about the adults feeling like the cartoon isn't allowed to change, it's about the adults recognizing that the creators were trying to get by on nostalgia and nostalgia alone. They didn't handle the material respectfully and they didn't create a new story that could stand on its own. To be blunt, it's just bad, and both kids and adults recognize that. There are, as said, absolutely outliers here who take their nostalgia way, way, WAY too far, but they are actually outliers. Most adults love getting new content for a beloved series, whether it's updated for adults or still aimed at kids... provided that story is treated well. If you're not going to treat it well, why did you mess with something an entire generation loved rather than just creating something new?
Take Cruella, for example. Who is this movie for? By all surface logic it's for kids. It's a Disney film based on another, beloved Disney film. Anyone who hears the most basic premise for this prequel would go, "It's about Cruella from 101 Dalmatians? Yeah, that's obviously for children. Who else would it be for? Why are all these adults up-in-arms over a kid's movie? Get a life!" But, well, it's not a kid's movie. Not really. The live action aside, it's now PG-13 (as opposed to G) and it's 2 hours 14 minutes (as opposed to 1 h 19). Take a look at the official trailer:
youtube
Are there reboots, prequels, and sequels designed to breathe new life into an old story and update it for the kids of today? Absolutely and often those stories are great. But there's also a trend of taking what was previously kid's media and not updating it for just adults, but actively trying to appeal to both. Which is when we run into trouble. This trailer doesn't look anything like a kid's movie. From the cinematography to lines like "I guess they were always scared I'd be a psycho!" it's very much aimed at adults, but the subject itself, this character, is supposed to be for kids. It's a Disney movie, but Disney is no longer synonymous with children. Perhaps most importantly, Cruella is getting... mixed responses, to be generous. As said, a lot of adults' reactions come down to whether these beloved stories are treated well and when they're not, people are rightfully frustrated. We can't use "It's not meant for you" as an excuse here because who else is a trailer like this meant for except adults? It's less "I don't want kids to have anything. This is my story. Hands off. It needs to appeal to me and me alone!" and much more, "The creators clearly want me to be a part of this audience, I am arguably their actual target audience as opposed to the kids, and now that I've watched this I'm... I'm extremely disappointed. You took something I loved and did it dirty. I don't like it, I'm not sure if kids can even watch this... so who is this story for? It was pretty clearly for me, but now I'm being told my opinion doesn't matter because it's actually just for kids."
At the end of the day yeah, any creator has the right to change up old franchises to their heart's content — and often times those changes do exceedingly well. Personally, I'm very glad they exist. But if they do badly, if the original spark is discarded, if there's no new and epic spark to replace it, if there's confusion about who is even allowed to criticize the story (is it really for kids?) then those creators shouldn't be surprised when there's pushback. They knew what they were signing up for. They deliberately picked those beloved franchises because of the nostalgia. The flipside of that is, if they get it wrong, adults will criticize the show rather than praising it like they'd hoped.

Good Stuff: The New Animaniacs
The Trio are Backy, Shamelessly Wacky
Tumblr media
Let it be said that a cartoon can’t not get back a pep in their step after being gone for so long. Mickey Mouse got his revival series, Ducktales reworked its old hat anew, Cuphead brought the more vintage style of hand drawn animation back, and now both Looney Tunes and Animaniacs have refurbished their looks when nobody was looking. Then again, after so long, Animaniacs can’t do the same song and dance nor just be Looney Tunes #2. So with its gaze on getting unique relevance, does this hold up? Well it has a soul, but one of very different breath.
I know this’ll be cheeky, coming from somebody that grew up with the original during Middle and High School, it’s made clear that while the charm is still there, I feel like it’s deep down ashamed of itself for existing. It’s in part by the uhhhhhh clear fact they cut out most of the original skits.
Tumblr media
I love the Warners, Pinky, and the Brain much as the next guy but I always found joy in Animaniacs being more than them. It wasn’t all memorable, I fucking hate Mindy, but the variety was still welcome and unpredictably fun. The Warners were still the main act, but the show didn’t revolve around them. It’s kinda like the one Looney Tunes reboot where it was only Bugs Bunny for a season until they decided, “Shit, there are more characters aren’t there?” They acknowledge this change in one episode but that’s it. Outside Scratchansniff and Ralph, nobody else is allowed to truly come back. The show while still enjoyable feels incomplete. Maybe season 2 will introduce more, it’s up in the air. Otherwise, have too much and the welcome will wear. As for it being more topical and meta with these current times, I don’t have much to say beyond the winds are kinda taken out the sails when it’s lucky this is a years later reboot. Just saying, it could’ve gotten rebooted over and over, go the Scooby-Doo route of airing continuous specials or interpreted series, go the Spongebob route of staying longer than desired, or worse above all, suffer the same fate as the Simpsons.
Tumblr media
You think it’s something after being gone for 22 years? Imagine being forced to live over 22 years. Doing the same thing, for a company that clearly says death was never an option.
I think my personal takeaway is that while I enjoy it, it isn’t the same after seeing so many other cartoons. I’ve gotten good chaos, good commentary, irreverent fun, good characters elsewhere and where this Animaniacs certainly knows what it’s doing, I’ve seen the original and this is original, but again pretty incomplete with not as many hooks as before outside “They’re Back”. I’m really grateful the show is how it is now, but I’m not rabid with joy over this as I hoped. Maybe I’m the exhausted fool.
But in spite of my hangups, it all is a quality return to form. New look, but doesn’t feel like such a shell of its former self or an attempt to be so modern that it immediately dates itself. It’s still musical, chaotic, energetic, a pretty dignified nostalgia comeback. It’s not outbeating the OG, but that is okay.

3 out of 5, Glad to have it back.

AHS Sarahs as Scooby-Doo Movies/TV Series
Tumblr media
Masterlist
I love Scooby Doo and you know I love writing a good shit post. Will this be popular? No, but I gotta get it off my chest
Billie Dean Howard
What’s New, Scooby-Doo? (2002-05)
I feel like Billie Dean woud’ve watched Scooby Doo as a kid. This isn’t the one that would’ve been out when she was a kid, but if it was, she would’ve vibed with it. Before Billie Dean realized her psychic abilities she was a huge skeptic to anything paranormal. She grew up watching shows like this that debunked paranormal things, so she didn’t believe that her abilities were real. It took some convincing before she truly believed.
Yes I turned Scooby Doo into something deep. I do be overthinking.
Lana Winters
Scooby-Doo! Mystery, Inc. (2010-13)
I chose this for Lana because she’s our investigative gal and this is the only Scooby Doo series that had an overarching plot along with the different mystery every episode. Lana likes a good mystery and even though she wouldn’t watch Scooby Doo, if she did, she’d watch this one. She also feels good when she can guess what’s going to happen next, even if it is a show meant for children.
Cordelia Goode
Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999)
This is perfect for Cordelia! This movie goes back to Salem times for our witchy gal Cordelia. It’s got the witchy vibes and even a whole witchy plot. Zombie Island could’ve fit Cordelia since it’s set in New Orleans, but I think with the whole Massachusetts og witch setting it fits well.
Bette and Dot Tattler
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! (1969-70, 78)
The OG is perfect for these gals. Bette would like the groovy theme song and would want to watch it when it aired. Dot wouldn’t be too opposed to it. She’s not big on cartoons, but she’s alright with this one. Bette and Dot like to take bets on who they think the culprit is.
Sally Mckenna
Scooby-Doo! and the Legend of the Vampire (2003)
The whole premise of this mystery is that rock musicians are being taken from by a vampire from this rock venue in Australia and the Hex Girls are in this movie so it has big Sally vibes. I mean come on, it’s all about rock musicians! The Hex Girls are also great.
Audrey Tindall
Scooby-Doo: The Move (2002)
For some reason, I have this feeling that back in the day Audrey Tindall would’ve auditioned for a movie like this. It wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece and it was quite campy, but early career Audrey would’ve gone for it. Totally would’ve auditioned for the part of Daphne.
Ally Mayfair-Richards
Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! (2015-18)
Ally wouldn’t have let young Oz watch any of these except maybe this version because it’s the least scariest, in her opinion. She was always worried that the older versions would give Oz nightmares so she didn’t let him watch them until he was older.
Wilhemina Venable
Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)
Lowkey the spookiest edition in the Scooby Doo universe. This is the one with actual monsters so I’m going to put this for Venable. She’s a dark gal and in my head it makes sense. Venable wouldn’t be caught dead watching something like this though. Sadly, she’s a cartoon hater.

Would you ever write... a Scooby Doo and Phantom of the Opera crossover?
Ooooo, that would be a tough one to do. I would LOVE to say yes... but I honestly don’t know what I would really write, if that makes sense.
(now allow me to vibrate intensely in place and hyperfixate over two of my earliest and most influential fandoms for about a thousand words please and thank you)
As much as I love these two fandoms (and I REALLY do. POTO 2004 helped pull me out of a REALLY ugly spiral in middle school - I dare say my worst - and Scooby Doo was THE fandom I first wrote/posted fanfiction for), meshing them would be... difficult.
Some Scooby properties have already played with Phantom some - Stage Fright actually did okay on their Phantom monster figure, esp in that he was a spirit focused on ego and NOT obsessing over Daphne (like they’ve done in other films - thanks Music of the Vampire TT_TT) - though considering every OTHER misstep made in that movie, it’s a damn miracle they even got THAT right. And Be Cool Scooby Doo had an episode with a Ghostly Prima Donna that hits a lot of the same points - amazing opera singer who wreaked havoc on a theatre when scorned by the owners.
(And if you wanna get into the actor side of it, Lego Scooby Doo: Haunted Hollywood’s plot focused on the ghost of a Boris Karloff/Lon Chaney Sr mashup haunting the studio with his horror characters, with the unmasking being the Mashup Actor JUNIOR wanting to carry on his dad’s legacy, a la Lon Chaney Jr. Again, not a great movie, but the mystery/monster element was handled alright)
The meshing of the two doesn’t really inspire much plot to it that hasn’t already been done to pieces. If it’s just a traditional Scooby mystery at a music competition the Phantom is trying to control/ruin, well - just see the above examples.  Regardless of the rest of the movie/episode’s flaws, WB actually did okay with the Phantom-esque elements. If it’s a modern POTO retelling with Mystery Inc trying to stop the Phantom, then, well. It’s basically rehashing Sherlock Holmes and the Phantom of the Opera adaptations all over again (of which there’s at least five and a comic miniseries - no joke, those actually exist), but with wacky hijinks and a talking dog. Not much new or interesting there, IMHO.
It would be VERY tired, low hanging fruit to have Daphne get kidnapped as the Christine replacement, and Velma’s family history is firmly established in Germany from Frankencreepy (and while that movie has... many problems, Velma’s family backstory is actually pretty damn good on its own, barring some minor quibbles over details mentioned).
I guess you could do Fred as like... the descendant of Raoul and Christine? Christine was OG Swedish in Leroux, and Fred’s family is primarily blonde and blue-eyed by WNSD standards (I refuse SDMI on principle). There could be something about Fred being targeted by Erik for conflicting reasons, his spirit sent into extreme emotional flux with what was Raoul and Christine’s great-great something grandson, while another mystery goes on framing Erik for something else... There could be something there, but I wouldn’t be the one to do it; main reason being, I am NOT great at writing Fred.
For me, Fred is a difficult character to write, period; I have a better time of it with the live action Scooby movies Fred because I can play around with the flaws (read: bashing in the first movie) more. Fred in general is a tough character to write bc he’s played as the straight man, the generic leader (tho I forever mourn my lost draft of my post-SCOOB AU mashup with Orpheus in Eurydice - I actually had him there! *cries*).
More recent stuff plays around with him being an engineer - BCSD played him up as a neurodivergent mechanic, and I love that one to pieces - or a charming enough if frustrating at times himbo (WNSD), or in some cases an obnoxiously jealous dumbass who doesn’t know how to use buttons or listen to basic fcuking instructions (Moon Monster Madness, Music of the Vampire, also WNSD) or occasionally the dude SO obsessed with the Mystery Machine he may actually want to fcuk it (Frankencreepy, Happy Halloween SD!).
On the whole though, he’s not one ever really associated with music except when forced unrealistically (see again, Stage Fright for the sake of Fraphne baiting that they NEVER fcuking act on in these movies, to the point it’s legitimately frustrating and cheap to pull - Stage Fright esp so, bc Fred and Daphne spend the ENTIRE goddamn movie talking about having feelings for each other, KISS ON STAGE, and WHAT do they do?!? WHAT DO THEY DO?!??!?! THEY QUESTION THE KISS AND REVERT BACK TO STATUS QUO GODDAMNIT IT I’M JUST WHY) or when the gang is suddenly a band (WNSD, Legend of the Vampire, a background shot with him playing guitar in Witch’s Ghost, BCSD Screama Donna) or both (honestly all of the above, though BCSD played it for laughs best with Fred on the drums).
The closest we EVER got to Fred being interested in singing/music was an old ‘Behind the Characters’ short Hanna Barbera made for Cartoon Network, where Fred admitted he used to be in theatre and loved singing tunes from Showboat.
So him being the tie to Erik feels like a dead end to me. Not impossible, but still just... yeah, not a clean fit in my mind.
As for Shaggy and Scooby... they have enough problems to deal with without adding Erik on top of everything else. ‘Nuff said.
So yeah, unfortunately I have to say no on this one. There’s nothing I feel like I could do in them that wasn’t already tired (as opposed to the ROTG/POTO mashups I thought up forever ago), but hey, that could just be me.

Movie Review: Scoob! (Spoilers)
Tumblr media
Spoiler Warning: Alright so this isn’t the type of movie that really warrants two separate reviews, but because it was only released recently I feel a spoiler warning is warranted as I will be talking about specific points in the movie. So if you haven’t yet seen Scoob! and don’t want anything ruined before you do, go and watch then come back.
General Reaction:
So, I’m having a hard time really getting to grips with my enjoyment level of this movie. Because while I don’t think this was a bad movie by any means, I always wouldn’t rank it as one of my favourites particularly with this new wave of nostalgia-based movies that seems to be a thing in recent years.
Maybe the problem is I am not an avid Scooby-Doo fan, a lot of people may think that is sacrilege and I did grow up watching the original Scooby-Doo shows and movies, but I wasn’t as into it as I was other Cartoon Network shows or even other Hanna-Barbera properties.
On that note, something that fascinated me about Scoob! in its promo campaign outside of it being a stunning CG-Animation movie was the inclusion of other Hanna-Barbera properties. In the trailer it is simply Dynomutt, Blue Falcon and Dick Dastardly, the former two who I believe were spin-off characters of Scooby-Doo originally and Dick Dastardly who of course is Dick Dastardly. Wacky Races and its spin-off Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines were shows I was an avid fan of, but once you see the movie and you realise that Warner Bros. Animation is really pushing for a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe to stem from this with the amount of references and cameos of other characters and properties it is fascinating to me.
For instance, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 attempted something similar by effectively shouting about the fact that this movie was supposed to not only set up a third Spider-Man movie but also a Sinister Six movie and a Black Cat movie, then it was revealed Venom and Carnage were supposed to come into play, but then the whole thing got canned because the movie tried doing too much too soon.
Here though, they are subtle references that, unless you know the characters, don’t really register. I mean one or two are really obvious like having this universe’s version of Captain Caveman be somewhat of an antagonist here...I will be talking about him further down...but there are also just simply posters and name references that catch your eye if you know the characters. I don’t know every Hanna-Barbera character but the one that did catch my eye was a cardboard cutout of Hong-Kong Phooey.
As for the actual movie from a storytelling perspective, again I never really thought there was anything that grand about Scooby-Doo in terms of how they told a story. It was one of the first “monster of the week” shows in how formulaic it was and there was almost always a predictable formula in how each character would play their part.
In hindsight to that, I do appreciate both this movie and the first live-action Scooby-Doo movie for actually making that a satirical plot point, but in not having that much of a plot to base the movie on...I mean you can tell this is really an origin story of sorts in that if they are planning a cinematic universe this is that first rock, but unlike Iron Man they never had that hook that made you want to see the story continue.
I guess you could compare it in-house to what the DCEU did with Man of Steel. I didn’t really need more from after seeing that movie but I did want to see what this universe’s versions of some of my favourite DC Characters would be like, in a way this is similar.
It does sound stupid but the plot very much feels like a Scooby-Doo movie plot, in that the movie opens with that classic “monster of the week” unmasking, but the main threat of the movie is a real monster with some type of supernatural mystical twist.
But also, in adding the entire universe of Hanna-Barbera characters to that, you also have the most blatant in-movie Warner Bros. promo campaign with so many of the studio’s other properties being name-dropped it was borderline laughable.
In terms of the actual movie experience, this isn’t the first time I’ve watched a movie for the first time not in the cinema but knowing that the movie should have been released in cinemas rather than me simply not seeing it for any reason was rather surreal and, I do feel that this is the type of movie that warrants an audience viewing rather than just me watching it in my bedroom.
I also feel I would have enjoyed it a lot more with an audience, particularly an audience that doesn’t mind slightly dated, cheesy or somewhat really obvious plot points at times. I kind of predicted every major plot twist in this movie, although a couple of them I feel the audience is supposed to know from the get go otherwise why make it so obviously unless your pandering to a really young audience that don’t have two brain cells to rub together and tell that Fred with a really sinister grin full-naming Scooby is really the main villain in disguise particularly when you just saw him do the same thing ten minutes before.
But anyway, rather then going character by character in this spoilery section I’m going to break it down into what I liked and what I didn’t like. There was nothing I loved but also nothing I hated.
What I Liked:
But in terms of the overall message of the movie, Scoob! really hammers home that old-school notion of Man’s Best Friend, and not just with Shaggy and Scooby which is all I will say on that.
Tumblr media
Alright so this movie is obviously called Scoob! and focuses on Scooby as effectively the main character as well as his friendship with Shaggy. The two really are one character in that you can’t really imagine one without the other, and the movie really explores that in both good and bad ways...we’ll get to the bad.
As a dog lover and dog owner myself, this movie really spoke to me on that level and the bond that Shaggy and Scooby share I finally understood. In all other media for me it’s more a case of Scooby and Shaggy just being friends but here that bond goes deeper because you see them meet and you see them essentially become family.
Tumblr media
I really didn’t like the plot device of making them fall out only to have them make up later, it just is a very lazy trope at this point particularly as I’ve already seen it in a Scooby-Doo property before.
But they do kind of explain why it is necessary and why it happens because while they do have their friends at Mystery Inc. Shaggy and Scooby had no one before having each other, so when one feels like they’re drifting apart something flips and they get very possessive.
Also that ending, I mentioned this movie has a lot of things thrown in but while Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros. references are kind of in sync with this movie, how about Greek mythology to the point where they effectively summon the Underworld to Earth!
I’m a massive Greek mythology fan, and seeing the main monster of this movie actually being from Greek mythology and animated so beautifully is why this is in the good section, even if the Underworld actually looked like the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin.
Tumblr media
The voice cast for this movie is also unexpectedly brilliant. A lot of people may complain that the original cast who are still all alive, I think, weren’t asked back but outside of Frank Welker as Scooby I don’t think you really need them.
Zac Efron is one of those actors at the moment that can do no wrong for me, he can do comedy, he can do musical, he can do drama, he can do serious gritty drama. I really loved him as Fred here.
Will Forte didn’t fool me into thinking it was Matthew Lillard returning to the role because I feel his voice here wasn’t as squeeky or high as Lillard’s, but he still did a great job, Ian Armitage voicing the kid version was great too.
Tumblr media
Gina Rodriguez is a choice for Velma not just because like a lot of these characters the classic Velma’s voice is very distinct and almost iconic but to actively race-bend the character and make her Latina I thought added some much needed diversity to this movie and the Hanna-Barbera universe in general.
Jason Isaacs as Dick Dastardly was really a fantastic choice both for the actor and for the character. There were times particularly towards the start when he made Dick sound like Captain Hook and even his design here is very Captain Hook/Gru esk rather than the lanky Dick Dastardly design, and I was missing his classic hat. But for me Jason Isaacs is at his best when he’s playing a villain.
Tumblr media
On that note, Dee Dee Sykes and Dynomutt I thought were absolutely wonderful here, I’d actually say these two and Dick Dastardly were my favourite characters. All the D’s apparently.
Not only was it a teachable moment for me because I had to look up someone I was pretty sure was someone I thought they were in terms of me knowing Dee Dee originated in Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, but here was on Blue Falcon’s crew with Dynomutt and no reference to Captain Caveman whatsoever I was okay with.
Also, I cannot believe I am saying this but, this movie actually made me like a Ken Jeong performance. I cannot stand this man, I do not find him funny, I do not find him entertaining, yet something about him voicing Dynomutt who originally I swear what meant to have the brain capacity I associate with Ken Jeong, but to make me like the character was impressive.
The final thing on my good list to mention is that opening sequence, after the very heartwarming opening scene of Scooby and Shaggy meeting and a Halloween setting of the team first coming together to battle a monster of the week in a It inspired haunted house, they show a shot-for-shot remake of the opening credits for the OG cartoon which is rather clever.
The only other voice actor to mention in the good section for me is Simon Cowell, not only do they have Simon playing himself in such a brilliant way but also his son Eric also voices a character, very brief and not central to the plot, but really a cute moment. Also I don’t know why but Simon in voice over sounds almost like a parody to Simon in live-action.
Tumblr media
What I Didn’t Like:
Tumblr media
Alright so these are really knitpicks but I think they’re worth noting in terms of moving this universe forward.
Scooby Doo is a dog, a talking dog yes but a dog none the less...so why the heck does he talk so much. I mean granted this is a universe with a robotic dog and a biped martial arts vigilante dog...but they never genuinely explain how Scooby can talk and while it’s understandable in the original cartoons as it’s mostly groans and the odd mispronounced word...here he was having monologues...also as a puppy he should have had a puppy voice, just saying.
As mentioned, I never really got into this franchise when I was younger so outside of Scooby and Shaggy I don’t really know these characters...but was Fred always so weirdly obsessed with the Mystery Machine? I get being happy with your vehicle but I thought Fred and Daphne were supposed to be the ship of this property...not Fred and the van.
I really really really really really really really really did not like the cop out ending they had, I didn’t let them get away with it in Stitch Has a Glitch and I am not letting them get away with it here. This big dramatic heartstring pulling thing happens, yet it’s almost immediately rectified with no solid explanation other then “we need to wrap things up”.
So to see one of these properties not authentically translate I thought was annoying, by which I mean Captain Caveman. Looks wise he is on point and I am fully aware that Mel Blanc is not going to rise up from the grave to voice him again, but the very essence of him being a caveman in his speech was not there for me here.
It would have been better if they allowed some time to go past and let the heroes stew in their sorrow before somehow discovering a way to fix things, but no it is literally as soon as the bad thing happens we are supposed to believe this was thought out?
My final thing is this. The Hanna-Barbera properties I grew up with are Scooby-Doo which I liked, Top Cat which I loved, Wacky Races which I loved, The Jetsons which I wasn’t as acquainted with as I would have liked to be, The Flinstones which I loved, Hong Kong Phooey which I liked and Captain Cavemani which I liked.
Tumblr media
I’m sure Tracy Morgan is a likeable comedian, but then play on the comedy of the character and have him be like he originally was.
Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe:
I would love to see The Flinstones, Top Cat and the other Wacky Racers get this movie treatment. In fact if they market it correctly, Warner Bros. Animation could have a different genre movie for each property, be that comedy for Flinstones, action for Hong Kong Phooey, maybe a heist movie for Top Cat, sci-fi for the Jetsons, the list goes on.
Tumblr media
As mentioned before, I do not see that groundwork for a cinematic universe here. Rather than it showing signs of being like the MCU I think it does stick more in-house as the DCEU by simply giving me the want to see other Hanna-Barbera characters inhabit this universe.
Do I feel this is the start of something big? No, do I feel there is potential here absolutely.
Overall I rate the movie a solid 7/10, it’s enjoyable, it’s cute, it’s family-friendly and I believe that’s its USP. It’s not a groundbreaking movie but it does have that cinematic universe potential and, as mentioned, I do look forward to see if more Hanna-Barbera properties get the same treatment.
So that’s my review of Scoob! What did you guys think? Post your comments and check out more Movie Reviews and other posts.

Gonna get real for a second, if I may.
Just finished watching Infinity Train. Still over the moon about that whole thing and so stoked for the next chapter. But you know what's sad? As a Steven Universe fan, I know it'll be forever and a day until that happens and Cartoon Network probably won't even promote it properly.
Adventure Time is gone. Regular Show is gone. Steven Universe can only go so far with what little time slot their getting and barely any reruns. Now Infinity Train has ended, it's highly possible that we won't see those ten episodes air again unless there's like some sort of big event but it will most definitely be followed by a marathon of goddamn TTG. Victor and Valentino, I haven't watched much of it but I like the premise, only gets so much time, I think I've only seen Apple and Onion air a few times and every single time I check the channel it's either: Teen Titans Go, The Amazing World of Gumball or freaking Total Dramarama.
Seriously, what happened to the network that had the most diverse group of kids shows ever? Even Boomerang is shit at this point because they don't really air the classics like the used to! Stuff from back in the day like I Am Weasel, Puffy Ami Yumi, My Gym Partner is A Monkey, OG Teen Titans, Codename Kids Next Door, Chowder, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Dexter's Laboratory, Tom and Jerry, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, Ed Edd N Eddy, Scooby Doo, Camp Lazlo, OG PPG, and new titles like Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall, Regular Show, Adventure Time, Clarence, as weird as it is, We Bare Bears, OK KO (WHICH YOU B*STARDS CANCELED), Infinity Train can be added now and whatever else is going to be coming within the next few years.
I get it, y'all are trying to cater to kids since it is a kids network but come on. It's gonna get to the point where even kids aren't gonna watch the same thing if you constantly shove it in their face. Like bring back the cartoon bumpers, the funny movie marathon weekends, the Christmas specials that aren't just TTG related. Bring back the Cartoon Network city for more than just being in a crossover. BRING BACK THE GOOD CARTOON NETWORK BECAUSE RIGHT NOW, THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT IT.

Answering TV Questions, part 1
#1. Shows you watched growing up
Now, I watched a lot of things when I was growing up, so I’m going to limit this ‘shows that heavily influenced/impacted me as I was growing up.’
So when I was growing up, my household didn’t have cable, so primarily I got my entertainment from the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS Kids) and from VHS tapes. So I saw a lot of...
Arthur
Tumblr media
“Hey! It’s a wonderful kind of day!”
‘Arthur’ was one of those constants of my childhood - the books were everywhere, and the show ran for years on one of the few TV channels I had access to. It’s still on the air, with new episodes being made every so often, so it never gets stagnant!
I think it’s hard not to like ‘Arthur’... It’s just a simple show about kids growing up. Its simple premise and wide range of characters (everything from a horse-crazy Jewish tomboy to a gay intellectual teacher who gives puppet shows) allows it the freedom to tell almost any story it wants, and it expands on itself rather well, imo.
Liberty’s Kids
Tumblr media
‘Liberty’s Kids’ was an educational series that focused on the American Revolutionary War, wherein the 13 colonies forcefully separated themselves from England, becoming the United States. I enjoyed it a lot as a kid and tried to watch it every day.
Looking back as an adult, I admire how deep the show actually got. It portrayed the war as a ‘necessary evil,’ and it didn’t hold back any punches about how bad war gets. It also takes some time to focus on how wrong slavery and racism both are, but how prevalent they both were at the time. It showed suffering on all sides, and made sure the audience of children understood the characters’ struggles.
Veggietales
Tumblr media
One of the earliest uses of cgi in animation and, honestly? The early episodes were hilarious! This show amused me as a kid and impresses me as an adult because it was originally created by a handful of people who just wanted to make something for their kids to watch.
I really, really don’t like the way the show is made now, but that’s a whole other thing.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?
Tumblr media
A classic. My dad watched it growing up (he’s part of the og fandom), so I did as well... as soon as I was old enough not to be afraid of the monsters. ^^;
‘Scooby-Doo’ was also the series that introduced me to fandom culture, the world of fanfiction, and it gave me my first fictional ship. (It was Shaggy/Velma, if you were curious) It was my original portal to online fandom and, during my lonely and depression-filled middle school years, it made me feel a little bit less alone to know there were other people who cared as much as I did about a cartoon series.
Recess
Tumblr media
I loved ‘Recess,’ and I could pretty much quote/mimic any character for awhile. I actually talked like the Ashley girls for awhile in elementary school... which no one cared about, but I had fun doing it!
the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle
Tumblr media
This was another series that my dad watched as a kid and showed to me when I was a kid. I don’t really have much to say about it other than I still enjoy it to this day.
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command
Tumblr media
I watched the series a lot while it was on the air. I remember drawing a fan comic for it. But weirdly enough, I don’t remember much about the show now. I should probably try to find it to watch it again.
I remember there being a robot vampire creature that utterly terrified and fascinated me. I think it was one of the earliest monster creatures that I took an interest in, and the idea of a monster being part-robot, part-vampire really made me think about what other sorts of monsters could exist.
And Mira and Gravitina both gave me a love for alien girls with blue skin. Something about their designs still sticks with me.

Here’s the Cartoon Network schedule for Tuesday, October 10 to Monday, October 16.
Lots and lots of changes this week. Let’s just do a quick rundown:
Teen Titans Go! replaces OK K.O.! as Scooby-Doo movie time filler at 11:30a weekdays.
Ben 10 Classic takes over the reboot Ben 10′s 12:30p weekday slot.
The Amazing World of Gumball takes over We Bare Bears’ weekday slot at 7:30pm.
Clarence: Stormy Sleepover airs Friday at 9:00a.
Changes to the New New New New schedule condense the lineup to just the new episodes (and the TTG encore) again.
Saturday changes result in a lot of shows moving around.
Steven Universe loses Sunday 6am reruns to Adventure Time, surprisingly.
Sunday changes have shows moving around, too.
New weekday lineup starting Monday has more Gumball, more Titans Go, less OK K.O., and less OG Titans.
Here’s what’s new this week:
Ben 10 - Friday at 5:00p
OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes - Friday at 6:30p
The Amazing World of Gumball - Friday at 6:45p
We Bare Bears - Two new episodes Friday at 7:00p
Transformers: Robots in Disguise - Saturday at 6:30a

ScoobyWatch Part 1: Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!
I’ve been deep diving into the comforting childhood nostalgia of the Scooby-Doo franchise since May, revisiting some incarnations and watching others for the first time. Now I’m trying to collect my thoughts on all of them, one by one...
Tumblr media
Originally Aired: 1969-1970; 2 Seasons; 25 Episodes
Which One Is This Again?: The OG Scooby show, the one that started it all. Just four meddling kids, one talking dog, a groovy van, and a whole bunch of conmen dressed up as ghosts and monsters. It’s a simple formula, but over 50 years later we still haven’t tired of it.
Any Childhood Memories?: Soooo many... As a kid Scooby-Doo was one of my absolute favorite things, I had a Scooby themed birthday party one year, and at one point my sister and I combined owned Scooby beach towels, Scooby toys, Scooby fruit snacks, Scooby Valentines, the list goes on. And this series was my introduction to him. When I was a kid Cartoon Network still relied heavily on retro cartoons to fill out its schedule, and they ran these 25 episodes A LOT in the late 90s. Along with A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, this was probably the incarnation CN aired most often, at least until they were both phased out in favor of What’s New Scooby-Doo.
Current Impression: When I started this rewatch, I deliberately skipped over this version in favor of later incarnations that I was less familiar with. I figured I had seen these episodes so much as a kid that they wouldn’t hold much interest to me now. This might be my nostalgia goggles talking, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I still enjoyed it.
Coming back to this series immediately after watching some of the later incarnations, you notice some little things that got lost as the franchise wore on. Character quirks like Velma losing her glasses or “Danger-Prone-Daphne’s” klutziness, little things that flesh out the gang’s personalities and that Hanna-Barbara seemed to forget about in later versions where they delegated all the comic relief to Shaggy and Scooby.
Another thing I noticed was that this version seemed to try harder to convince you the ghosts are real. There’s a certain “spooky” aesthetic that I think got lost as the franchise wore on and its formula became cliche. The background art, the sound effects, the character designs for the creep of the week, at its best it creates a haunted atmosphere that’s never actually scary, even for little kids.
The animation may not be the best and several episodes contain racist stereotypes and humor, but this show still holds up better than many of its followups.

Maybe its cause its the Scooby-Doo cartoon I grew up with (other than Where Are You re-runs, and the two VHS tapes I have with a selection of episodes of said series. Along with some New Scooby-Doo Movies stuff) but What’s New is still like hands down THE BEST version of the gang... I mean, they actually have some real personalities to them, they quip at each other, the whole ass thing where the others just break off into groups before Fred can even say a word, McGuyver Daphane.... its some great stuff to come to after the 4 late 90s early 00s animated movies (and they themselves are HIGH-QUALITY SCOOBY-DOO)
I dunno, I just like late 90s through the early 00s Scooby-Doo best, cause the interactions the characters have with each other is great, the animation is top-notch, we get some actually developed personalities for everyone (not that the older stuff didn’t give them personalities, it was just not as nuanced. You get them reacting to something one of the others says or does with a look or a deadpan comment or some such, like a more realistic reaction. Like... the core of the character is still there, we just get to actually see more of it) and in that era we got two movies that re-united the OG voice cast (at least the cast for most of the 70s, which is pretty much the voice cast we know best of that era), which is really cool because we’ll never get that again.
Also, that era proved just how much people still liked and cared about this cartoon, which is probably still one of the most popular Hanna-Barbara cartoons... other than like, Tom and Jerry, who were created by them when they worked at MGM, so they don’t have the rights, but they are their characters.
I think that era generally inspires a lot of how I view the characters and want to write them as well... I mean, there is other stuff I’ve seen that I’m cherry-picking bits out of because the continuity is screwy and I want to make some sense, but I think a lot I’m going to take off of that period cause its just some quality stuff that I like.
