Threw her character development out the window! She had so many redeeming moments but then they started backpedaling and making her crueler than she was even at the start.

basically she's always been the stereotypical high school bully character but also there have been areas where it seemed like she could be redeemed or she could have any sort of character development at all but it's always scrapped so she can be a bully again. she also had her miraculous taken away for the reasoning of ""hawkmoth knows your identity now so you cant have a miraculous"" but several other miraculous holders have had their identities revealed yet they're still miraculous holders

She was set up for a redemption arc, but the writers gave her a damnation arc instead. They changed her from a more complex character to a boring, one sided one. Not to mention that she is ""punished"" by being sent to live with her emotionally abusive mom, while the man who raised her is ""rewarded"" by getting to raise her half-sister instead.

since she‘s your pfp i‘m sure you know what i‘m talking about but they really just build up to an amazing redemption arc over 2 or 3 seasons and then went with rocket speed the other way like what why where‘s even the point

She never got a redemption arc, despite the narrative building to one by introducing her as a main character’s childhood friend, and building on her bad relationship with her mother. Instead, she became a cartoon villain, and her secret sister randomly showed up and got the redemption arc that was clearly meant for Chloe.

Her character development got undone because the creator hates her. I don't even like her that much but that was absurd on a level that I do not often see. AND she got replaced.

Reduced from multifaceted bully with potential to reform to puppet for the other antagonist plans.

She had a redemption arc in season 2 but then the creators decided they prefered it if she just... got even worse than she was at the beginning. Also, they created her half-sister, who could be named ""Nice Chloé"" because she's literally Chloé if she was nice and a lesbian

ANYWAY. when ur gf breaks up w you out of the blue and never really gives you a very satisfying explanation or anything that lets u understand WHY it happened—you’d fill in those gaps from time to time. especially when said ex gf talked very loudly about how the committed casual sex she’s been having w some unknown guy whose identity you aren’t aware of is SO GREAT AND AWESOME AND EPIC

so yeah when tvl adrien is insecure about their break up that throws ALL of tvl Marinette’s logic and apprehension out the window and her One Track Mind will do or say anything to reassure him. also he had just recently explained that he DOESNT have a gf and also she found out that he knows he’s a senti. which had been a secret she was keeping from him. so that like. lowered her guard slightly too. mix everything up together and you get her VERY eager to prove to him JUST how desirable he is in her eyes

i find god tiers especially angsty bc they CAN die, but it has to be heroic or just, they have to either do something awful, or fail at something good. the only way they can die peacefully is if they sacrifice themself for the greater good, but that means they'll never die during the resolution, they'll never get to die seeing everything work out, they'll never get to die in the happy ending.

I also did find the homestuck epilogues of "god tier powers becoming stronger than people were built to handle" interesting, it implies that sburb doesn't really have much consideration for the kids after the game, whatever long term effects sburb has on them doesn't really matter to the game.

A friend of mine also had a lot to say about the epilogues being a sort of suicide note for dirk. paradoxically, dirk is afraid of not existing, but he also hates himself so much that he wants to destroy himself. he forces everything back into the narrative, then spends the epilogues being awful trying to get everybody against him, trying to justify why they should just kill him.

I haven't finished candy nor have i started hs^2 but, I found the epilogues fascinating so far despite some of the humor

Yeah, i dont think the concept of immortality is bad, i just never found immortality appealing because of the consequences of it, maybe is more of my experience but i see people focusing on the angst of losing someone, which yeah it would be like a big bad consequence of being immortal, but theres so much more

Having to move out if your identity is secret, not aging, maybe even a lost of how times flows because youre immortal, the ones you mentioned are also big ones. I just think immortality sucks, not the concept itself tho

About the epilogues i cant really mention a lot because, i havent finished reading them, but i really like the concept of ultimate self, i think the execution could be much more interesting but thats my personal opinion and tbh we havent seen all there is of it

okay im going to be vulnerable and admit though ive owned house of leaves for a few months i was spurred to start reading it the other day after watching that video on myhouse.wad . no one make fun of me. that being said.

im not necessarily going though it super in depth and more just trying to unravel some stuff for funsies with some various help from old forums and what strikes me as sometimes glaringly missing from discussions on the book is the way it relates to women. like the fact that the house itself is treated as though it has a female identity will get talked about but theres not rlly discussions about the ramifications of that--how will and holloways posturing--named as explicitly about 'male dominance'--is essentially a fight over who gets to get the girl. wills early venture into the house is literally likened to karen kissing wax, like theyre BOTH infidelities, and thats not nearly the first time karen herself treats the situation like the house is her romantic rival or at least rival for wills attention (im not far enough in to have too solid a grasp on the implications of the name delial--but lets just say i have a suspicion?).

anyway whats maybe even more interesting than that is the way its kinda ALL about gender--its men who keep entering the house desperate to know what its about, its men driven to write about it and uncover its secret knowledge, and it drives them fucking crazy. like...you can read that--VERY EASILY--as men 'discovering' the ""hidden"" interiority of women, like, the very idea that women are complex people with their own ideas and emotions and inner worlds. the fact that the house has a secret inside is huge fucking news and just about every man in the novel reacts to it as such, but the reactions from women are like...not that. idk im not done with it by any means but the similarity between the conversations between karen & wax at the end ch VII and johnny & thumper at the end of VIII really apparent. when thumper is listening to johnny, seeking to understand him, being really invested and interested and not reacting with annoyance or disdain or boredom like he expects, it genuinely really knocks him out to the point he nearly cries--and then he bottles it up, writes it off, even when she echoes karens exact words flirting with wax he doesnt register it.

the text displays a consciousness around gendered expectations here, particularly bc thumper is a sex worker, that she cant be expected to intellectually engage w it, but she can and does...and then johnny doenst know what to DO about it, how to engage w a real moment of understanding between the sexes or whatever so he very consciously falls back on gender expectations for men and refuses to feel that connection, severing the tie he inadvertently built w her and consigning the moment to unknowable blackness. the void is invented by people determined to treat it as foreign--which often means treating it as hostile (holloways gun, johnnys suspicions when thumper didnt call him back).

that she ends with the comment 'you just need to get out of the house' is like...almost laughably on the nose especially w the way chauvanist culture has proliferated on the internet. like in the book too, dont get me wrong, its just so startlingly accurate to whats going on it seems like she really must UNDERSTAND in a way johnny fails to capture in his narration but still comes through due to her being kinda fucking great--sorry i REALLY like thumper in this actually she may be my favorite. its sort of difficult for me to look at the line and divorce it in my head from the phenomenon of the incel--read a certain way, you have johnny ranting and raving about how he just cant ever figure out what the collective 'woman' is thinking and all this time hes spent driving himself crazy about it, and thumper listening and understanding and very sympathetically and honestly saying 'that wouldnt be a big deal if you interacted w women instead of holing up inside trying to theorize about it.'

i dont necessarily think its a mistake that johnny is the kind of person he is, a partying womanizer or whatever, bc sex becomes his only interaction w women (his failure to talk abt the book w kyrie in favor or fucking her) just as entering the house becomes wills only interaction w it (or at least he rages when he cant have that interaction, he values it above others). the book is pretty clear about both of these acting as forms of penetration. as johnny gets more invested in the text he interacts more and more w the women zampano used as interpreters and comes more and more into contact w women and less and less able to deny their interiority.

the reaction from men that women are people is simple and plain disbelief, followed by disconnected, invasive, rigorous study, study that is likened to war, to surgery, to expedition--anything but understanding. its kind of baffling idk maybe im just not looking in the right place to see people talking about it but this sorta feels like...the point. hell even earlier in ch VII on page 91 you get will and holloway excitedly talking about calling the press about their huge discovery that no one will believe...and then just, karen, living her life, treated like an enigma. i literally have this written in my notes as "men discover women have internality; their wives decline to comment"

t&b has shown how barnabys tragic backstory is just public information but out of all heroes the hero going through the most shit because of their hero position is undoubtedly karina...

sure, barnabys past is mostly public, and he has no secret identity, but even if he was young he became a hero, karina was a child. karina also didnt just become a hero like other child heroes, she also became an idol.

being a child celebrity is a horrible experience as a fact, and the only other person who may understand karina on this matter is ryan, who definitely looks like a kid in the teaser added to the beginning movie, and who is referred to as an experienced hero, something kotetsu gets referred to bc of a decade or so experience... and considering hes about barnabys age, he had to start as a kid

the other child heroes have very distinct and separate public/private personas, which is true for karina too- but she has responsibilities due to being an idol. she has to play up a certain kind of persona, wear a certain kind of clothes, she cant even choose her tagline for herself.

she is sexualized and objectified to sell the idol blue rose, and she does that every time shes in her hero suit. the reason i say ryan may be able to understand her is that while we dont know anything about him for sure, he most likely started as a kid and went through a similar career path as barnaby (in the sense of his private self being public knowledge), but it has worse ramifications to go through that as a kid

still, it doesnt come even close to the way blue rose is marketed as an idol. at times, t&b comes close to making some sort of somewhat self-aware commentary on it... but never quite manages, and t&b2 really let karinas character down and let her not have any meaningful character development and perhaps taking back agency for herself

its wild to me how she should have the most against hero industry- it never protected her, on the contrary, it facilitated her exploitative career. had mr. legends match-fixing become public knowledge, for example, she couldve been given a moment to shine.

shes very smart and also one of the best heroes, having tied with keith for KOH earlier, and it feels unimaginable to me that she couldnt have easily accepted it. blue rose is part of the dark side of the hero industry, the marketing and the lies (her entire persona is based on lies, and she is suffering for it for many reasons, and she cant change it because her manager is against it)

similarly, ryan has undoubtedly seen it all happen somewhere else (why else does he keep acting like sternbilds heroes are such an unique case with how they support each other etc), and i think he wouldve accepted it as easily

blue golden, i feel, has more insight into the hero industry than kotetsu & barnaby, because kotetsu is such an idealistic person at the core and while barnaby has been mistreated by the hero industry, its easy to chalk it up to mavericks direct interference than the entire industry itself

karina never was a tool to be used by a villain- she just happened to become an idol to be marketed since she was a child. the issues of the hero industry run far deeper than just some ouroboros interference. i dont think karina (or ryan) would find mr.legends shittiness a surprise or have any qualms about accepting it immediately

just because youre a hero or someone who works for the hero industry doesnt mean youre a good person. mr.legend and maverick certainly couldnt arrange the entire match-fixing by themselves: there had to be a lot of people involved with it. t&b2 really downplays this aspect... and LL auduns character potential isnt realized...

hes a vigilante... according to who? the hero industry?.. which decrees that only the biggest companies in sternbild may be able to sponsor heroes? what if your NEXT power was past the required threshold and you had the pure idealistic heart of a hero but you cant find a sponsor?

even the 1st season touches on how commercialized the hero industry is, but i feel like that whole aspect was forgotten for s2. it feels like they forgot the whole corruption angle entirely, the way apollon media is one of the sponsor companies but it owns OBC which broadcasts and owns heroTV...

karina doesnt have meaningful personal connections to ouroboros, but she doesnt have to. she just knows firsthand how cruel the hero industry can be, and how everyone involved within it is just a person. the title of a hero doesnt make anyone ideologically good.

she has worked hard for what she has achieved as blue rose, but still her achievements are overshadowed by others, and i remain of the opinion blue golden shouldve won KOH, since karina has tied with keith in the past and if ryan is good at something, its being a hero (lol), so he wouldnt have been a hindrance to her in this goal

but im getting sidetracked... theres just so much potential about karina that the show never acknowledges so that she can talk about crushes or something instead of anything serious...

& last but actually least -competitive pay + benefits is the tentative(?) title for the office au! i hadnt looked at this doc in a while... the only coherent thing in it is a 'bonus chapter' thats not even in the mockumentary format???

Halloween Asshole

so this one's a phanphiction premise (they all were. i am a simple man.) and its based off this headcanon i call "Halloween Asshole" which apparently i just wrote down a year ago and expected to remember what it means. hmmph. luckily, i mostly do. so for that headcanon it was basically that on halloween ghosts become pretty fuckin testy for some reason. like, the energy and the veil and whatever makes them easily ajitated and keyed-up. higher energy, but its an aggressive energy, and their inhibition retreats a bit. this usually works for if you plan to spend halloween goofing off and haunting people and retaliating if theyre mean to you.

but for this fic specifically, it was about how danny gets affected by that too, and halloween isnt always on a weekend. so he has to go to school all normal! and he just has to put up with this extra energy like its not even there, and manage the emotions hes not feeling on purpose. being irrationally angry sucks, especially when it feels like youre going to blow up at your loved ones.

when i saw u talking abt this fic on tumblr and when you started uploading the first few chapters, i was so so excited for this story. cant believe i hit a reading slum exactly as you uploaded most of it </3 but! im back now and i immediately went back to binge read this over the last two days, it has been so much fun :D first of all, yeah the concept is genius obviously. season 8 really dumped the wildest things on all of us and just expected us to be normal abt it huh. really glad somebody picked up the souleating storyline again, it had soo much fun potential and yeah you hit all of it. the themes?? and narratives?? in this story?? have been driving me insane theyre so good. going from what it means to be human to is this really me if im always wearing a facade to my identity not as a human or watcher but as a hermit sososososososo good. i have developed all the feeling for the way you portray mumbos and grians relationship like. yeah. yeah they really are that close huh. of course they end up soulmates with the most unfortunate timing possible. of course they do. i dont think ive ever felt as soft as when reading the preening scenes. ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS TOO THO like skyduo!!!!!!!!! siblinghood is real they invented it. impulse scar everyone!! adored scar taking jellie to the void with him bc ofc. ofc he would. and the scene with jimmy ooo he really is Your Guy huh. "Jimmy held his secrets so close to his chest that people never even knew he had them" ough ough ough ough ough my man my boy my lad. i think having read the listerner!jimmy fic before that also added soso much. grian really saw the dream smp and said no thank u <3 and i think that was very correct of him BUT YEAH overall? amazing writing epic characterizations so many little lines that made me stop and just rethink how i think abt these characters haha. i am afraid i must plagiarize all of your ideas in my brian 😔 ur watcher concepts are simply too good to not be canon I HOPE U HAVE A GREAT TIME WRITING THE SEQUEL I CANT WAIT TO SEE IT

IM SO GLAD YOU LIKED THE THEMES!!! i go a bit insane everytime anyone comments on them because it is by far my favorite thing that i did with the fic, which was explore that concept of humanity/inhumanity/self-identity.

mumbo and grian's relationship...they make me ill! they make me ill. it's like...idk as much as LOVE desert duo, when it comes to my own writing i seem to just write mumbo and grian over and over again. they're just so. yeah. <3 im glad you like the preening scenes there will likely be more of them. it's just such an easily intimate type of scene you know? and the fact that grian up until this point has most done it alone (minus pearl helping sometimes), which is pretty uncomfortable and tedius when he can't easily reach his own back. and im so glad you appreciate scar taking jellie into the void he would never abandon her <3 it was one of my fave funny/lighthearted parts of the series

SLDFKJSLFJSFKFSF YEAH. YEAH JIMMY IS MY GUY. in a fic about grian and mumbo i manage to still insert jimmy solidarity brainrot into it. he'll be in the sequel too--not in any major role but i promise you he will There at some point because empires minorly factors into it. I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU LOVED THAT LINE. i know that i say every line someone quotes is my favorite but that might actually be one of my favorites in the whole fic. the Lonesome Dreams backstory for jimmy was in the works for a long time before I ever wrote the fic, since i came up with that before i even came up with htbahb. so I absolutely intended everything from that fic to be implicated in that line <3 also you're right, i think lonesome dreams does add to it. i may or may not put it in the series, but lonesome dreams is also planned to work with other series as well, so idk

AND YESSS THE DSMP REFERENCE i had a lot of fun with it. i chose blue and gold for the door because it reminded me of l'manberg uniforms and was less obvious than green for dream. i also like my other slight dsmp-adjacent throwaway in mcc too, where when mumbo joins the server tommy comments in chat about seeing him as a father figure (mcc19 does take place after that one collab video...just sayin')

i am having a great time writing the sequel!! i actually have an update (not...chapter update. status update) to post no it later this week :eyes: because i finally reached a point where i can make proper progress on it. aka i was able to work out a lot of details and planning and am in the midst of writing it as fast as i can
