[sputters and laughs] This is the funniest ask I've ever gotten, partially because I don't think you know what you're uncorking here, anon. I do try to keep negativity off this blog nowadays, but I'll oblige you this one time.

Naturally, given how central Lightning is to this game, most of my grievances are with how she was treated and written, though I'll quickly note my other problems with the game:

The fanservice obvs. :U

The combat. Why did we do things like replace the fully functional stagger gauge with the weird audio waveform readout? Seems like a strange choice when XIII-2 had actually made noticeable improvements in terms of accessibility during combat (larger health bars, more readable text, etc).

The incredibly discordant and hard-on-the-ears soundtrack.

I don't usually harp on graphics because I don't really care about how pretty or "realistic" a game looks, but when the dev company boasts that this game is the "most complete and polished" in the Final Fantasy series (not the trilogy, the entire series), and then we get... copy-pasted trees... well, let's just say that that's objectively not the case.

The fact that all of the previous main protagonists don't play more prominent roles in this final installment of the trilogy is abysmal, and this goes twice for Sazh whose "character arc" has been recycled twice now.

The fact that we lose this wonderful world we've spent the past two games exploring and growing attached to is also abysmal! I hate stories where we lose magic at the end, separate the found family, etc etc. and LR is guilty of all of that. It's such a kick in the teeth.

Here's what I did enjoy about this game:

Masculine outfits. They all look great on her. And even better is when you run by NPCs and half the time they can't figure out her gender! (Really furthers the enby!Lightning headcanon I have for this game in particular.)

The fact that you can have Lightning take a jab at Etro during Noel's main quest lmao.

The guy in Luxerion that sings the New Bodhum theme.

You get to pal around with Fang in the Dead Dunes.

...And that's it, that's all I enjoyed.

And now, what I really hate about LR and how they wrote Lightning in general is... Lumina.

Do not get me wrong. I don't hate Lumina for superficial reasons like her personality or aesthetics. If she wasn't inherently tied to Lightning, I think I'd find her rather interesting. Her voice actor did a stellar job with her!

Instead, to me, Lumina's existence is a really hilarious admission from the writers they didn't know what to do with Lightning's character post-XIII. Lightning—who was shown in the first game to be incredibly self-aware, genre-savvy, and emotionally mature—gets reduced to a character that needs to have her "emotions" trot out in front of her as a little girl that harps on and harasses her for things like, I don't know, allegedly pushing her friends away?

Friends that never offer to help her in the first place, I might add. If they really wanted to drive home the idea that Lightning was being aloof, they had ample opportunities to do so. But instead all we ever have is Lumina telling us what Lightning's intentions supposedly are. Lazy writing at its finest!

Lumina also accuses Lightning of trying to be "as cold as the steel in [her] sword," which is a notion later tied to Lightning "locking away" her heart as a child which is just... a really funny retcon when you once again consider how emotionally mature she becomes in XIII.

We did this character arc before. And we did it to much better effect! The whole Lumina/Claire fiasco is one of the biggest walk-backs I've ever seen for a character's development, it's insane.

(I've already spoken at length about how Lightning's character is not the self-sacrificial type, either; you can search my blog for the word 'sentinel' if you want those posts.)

It's just sad, because there are ways they could've played with Lightning's character that would have made sense and been in line with the things she'd gone through up until this point. If you wanted to mess with her emotions, you could've written her as bitter, exhausted, and traumatized after her extended stint in Valhalla. This could have been a natural and compelling consequence of her time as Etro's guardian. It wouldn't have resulted in a terrible rehash of her first game's character arc either lmao.

Anyway there's a lot more I could say but I'm just gonna end it here. LR bad but could have been pretty good with a little effort, the end!

All of this is so GREAT omfg. YES absolutely, there are many edits of these rockstars.

Micah would absolutely eat it up. He THRIVES on attention, and he'd obsess over the latest trends for his edits.

Xander would act indifferent, knowing this sort of thing comes with the territory. BUT as a former teen heart-throb (think former teen Disney Channel star vibes), he does get embarrassed and annoyed if any clips of his previous acting roles are ever used KSDLFJ. He does not like that time in his life to be brought up (unless a certain someone (Grayson) is the one to bring it up. I may be working on a short of this LOL.)

After chatting about it with @marydublinauthor, here's more Fun Facts.

Micah absolutely makes his own edits of himself too. Everly sees them and thinks they're weak. She makes even better ones that got tons of hits on a secret account.

In retaliation, he records her doing electrical work and just generally existing, and proceeds to make private edits. They laugh over homemade and fanmade edits together, and it gets very romantic and they make out.

There are ABSOLUTELY fanfics about them too. Everly thinks the Micah Tate x Xander Dalton smut is the absolute funniest thing ever. She reads those out loud to them in a sexy voice. She probably perches somewhere high where they can't reach her.

Micah loves it, Xander rolls his eyes, and Grayson blushes in the corner somewhere and pretends he's not hanging on to every word.

Anyway. BOY ranking them all is really hard bc so many characters in the series have permanently set up camp in my head by now and arent particularly inclined to leave any time soon, but if I had to list off just a couple examples that have caused me the most brain damage so far, itd be:

- Terra, hands down my number 1 most specialest guy in the whole world. Instantly became enamored with him from the moment I first set eyes on him and then proceeded to have all of my ribs carefully and meticulously pulled out of my chest one by one throughout the entirety of bbs and the entire rest of the series after that. Its so dire man I literally cannot look at any images of him now without physically having to hold myself back from making a long strangled whine Out Loud With My Mouth every time

- the entire Wayfinder Trio as a collective unit + Vanitas also tbh. Terra's obviously my Primary Favorite but the wayfinders as a whole also make my heart hurt so fucking bad man. My partner and I choose to interpret them all as siblings bc it leads to some exceptionally delicious and painful rs dynamics to explore imo and something abt it just makes The Miseries hit that much harder in ways that have literally had me writhing on the couch with a thousand yard stare rapidly cycling through the five stages of grief on loop. I'm also counting Vanitas as part of the unit bc he's just so closely tied to Ven in my brain that separating them (lol.) feels Wrong (lmao.), and. God. Vanitas might just be one of THE most tragic characters in literally any media I've experienced and I say this without a single hint of irony. The current total wordcount of the rps that I've written abt the wayfinders with my partner so far has probably shot past 50k by now. Why am I hurds

- Kairi. I was originally mostly ambivalent/neutrally intrigued abt her but kept getting increasingly more pissed abt her treatment and constant sidelining by the writing to the point where I got to kh3/mom and something in me snapped entirely, and from that moment onwards I decided to love her entirely out of spite. She instantly shot up to become one of my favorites after that and if I think abt her meta and story potential for longer than five minutes at a time I start frothing at the mouth

- Sora, naturally. I have so so so so many thoughts on this little darling boy that could easily double the wordcount of this ask just by themselves but the most important thing to mention here in lieu of that, for now, is that he's is the One (1) and ONLY child ive ever seen, whether real or fictional, that has made me experience emotions anywhere Close to resembling baby fever. I want to dribble him like a basketball but also gently pinch his cheek affectionately and also spoil him silly like a grandma seeing her beloved grandson again for the first time in months

- Xigbar. This fucko is the one I'm the most mad about ending up liking as much as I do, not because hes a bad character, absolutely far from it I fucking ADORE this terrible bodyhopping little cunt, but because it happened by complete accident after I realized he shares a lot of (surface) similarities with my favorite blorbo from another entirely unrelated franchise and I then got mad about realizing I have a very easily clockable Type (which I've affectionately dubbed the Guys That Suck category. I have more too obv but its the funniest one I have). He's also infuriatingly fun to write. Get me OUT of here

- Xemnas, Terranort and Ansem SoD. Everyone in the Nort Collective counts tbh but those three are the ones I lose sleep over the most, particularly the first two; Xemnas bc he makes me feel an unfathomably deep and haunting sense of grief (brought on by me finishing bbs and then realizing days later the exact way his creation connects to Terra's story and hearing the sound of fucking glass shattering at the back of my head instantly), and Terranort bc I'm fucking terrified of him and he also makes me want to eat gravel whenever I think abt him in context with him interacting with the rest of the wayfinders. He's also really fun to write and this fact Upsets Me. Ansem's listed bc you can never go wrong with the ol reliable mad scientist. The rest of the norts I would probably also be a lot more insane over once I actually get off my damn ass and start picking through the mobile games but that's an endeavor for Future Salty (i am very excited and terrified)

- the Lingering Will. I'm counting it as a separate entity from Terra and the rest of the Terra Collective on a technicality bc (LOUD TELEVISION STATIC AS I GESTURE FRANTICALLY AND FURIOUSLY @ THE JUMBLED BALL OF YARN LABELED "my thoughts on the physical and psychological effects of being a guy who got his soul and entire being shattered into like five million distinct pieces for over 10 Whole Entire Years" THAT I HAVE NOT EXPLAINED THE ENTIRETY OF TO A SINGLE OTHER SOUL ON EARTH) but. Eah. This fucking haunted hunk of metal has been eating holes through my brain tissue ever since I first saw the kh2 secret superboss and I'm distraught over it every single day of my life. This thing is like a weird bug to me. Do you understand. (tearign up) Do you get me. Do I have to pull out the Lingering Will/The Hollow Knight venn diagram

And as for the other fuckos haunting my cranium on the daily I can only mention a couple other honorary picks that honestly could also very well have made it to the main list if not for the fact that this post is already long enough as it is, and these following characters are therefore mostly delegated to Sleeper Agent Blorbos who I don't think about QUITE as often as the ones listed above but whenever I Do I get just as distraught and ailed over them. the tags list it as non-sgrub au which is technically correct but wildly misleading because this is really a pirate au that takes place on alternia. it’s in a vague seafaring-age setting and is on a planet where alternia is an empire that shares a planet w other empires

this is one of those fics that’s Just An Original Novel, basically. but really fun and well done! sollux and kanaya are the two supporting characters which is excellent for Me Personally even if canon sollux would probs be screaming crying throwing up about working for vriska. kanaya wouldn’t tho. sorry babe :/

the funniest part abt this fic is how fucking mean it is to karkat. everybody thinks he’s completely annoying and insufferable and he is basically just a pawn for political power who nobody except deluded cultists believe has any revolutionary potential. obvs i love karkat but i’m fine w this take on him if only because of the vast amt of fic that positions him as the single most important character in the universe. i think also i just like when fic lets characters be Genuinely Annoying instead of always trying to smooth them into likeable archetypes

there’s some really interesting stuff about troll religion in here and i think terezi gets the opportunity to be a little more self-doubting than she is in a lot of fic in a way that i found rlly compelling

i also love when fics find a way to work the beta kids into alternian aus somehow!! i was cheering and clapping when rose showed up

Oh my god this is the best show ever it has amazing characters and they all have development at some point(except for you know who). Rick and Mortys relationship is getting better and ricks anger is more under control and I’ve rewatched this show over at least 7 times it’s a master piece it’s beautiful it’s my comfort show it’s got peak humour and a unique storyline and design I don’t get how people don’t like it.

Stranger things:

His show is fucking amazing like seriously all of the season and amazing there’s no bad season steve is a angel like he’s so sexy and he got amazing character development throughout the show how’s he’s the Steve that we all know and love.the seasons are well put together and have the best cliff hangers that make you want to click onto the next episode even if you don’t have time to it’s a hard show to stop watching, the friend groups are amazing it has lgbtq representation It’s just a beautiful show.

Hazbin hotel: oh my god I cannot explain how exited I am for the show to come back the pilot was amazing and it shows all of the characters personality’s very well. The voices match the characters perfectly and a lot of emotion are put into the lines

Jon: when Steve attempted to drop his camera onto the concrete after picking on him for the pictures of Nancy. (Yes Steve was in the right bc he was protecting his girl but I had to protect my “best friend” too. All of season 1 we were just pinning lol) I caught the camera before it hit the asphalt of the parking lot, handed it to Jonathan, then punched Steve in the face. Then we had to run to the car 😂😂😂😂

Spence: after we said I love you for the first time, I had the smart idea to prove and science knowledge to him and try to flirt. Bad idea. I made the worst jokes in the history of jokes by saying,“so I’m guessing you’ve got a lot of dopamine and oxytocin in your system right now?” He laughed and kissed my forehead. I wanted to die.

HELLO I SHOULD BE SLEEPING BUT I FINALLY HAVR THE URGE TO ANSWER THIS SOOOOOU

THEYRE TAURS BC OF MAGIC!!! its a HUGE cop-out but i literally would have spent months thinking abt how taurs would have evolved, creature design, the species and sub-species, culture, etc instead of actually drawing stuff for it so.. we do what must be done yk.

i make up for it in building up how the culture adapted to all this shit but thats coming later- basically in the canon soul eater universe theres an actual witch coven which kind of regulates magic to an extent? and my wife was like: so what if before the witch coven was founded? so basically a rogue witch fucked up a REALLY powerful spell- what it was supposed to do idk yet- and managed to turn the entire world into taurs.

this is what helped fix the huge loophole that was bothering me w/ some taurs being species domesticated by humans bc i was SHITTING myself over the evolution. (fun fact: before this was a taur au, when it was just like 3 naga!crona doodles, i did worldbuild an entire specevo snakepeople universe on the spot for them)

the magics actually really cool because i took a lot of inspiration from all those posts abt it being a narrative force! idk a lot abt the soul eater magic system bc if it got explained it was in the manga which i didnt read lol so im making a lot of it up on the spot BUT: the way taurs FUNCTION 24/7 is entirely metaphysically based on what would be funniest/narratively significant/make a good character arc or SOME SHIT like that. would it be funny to give Crocodile Jim back pain on his way to work? L to jim if it is. (i have to force myself to stop pondering the woes of taur physicians every time bc that is Not Important for my autistic little au STOP THINKING ABOUT-)

this also answers the question of How Is The Species Decided. when the Taurificationing happened species was assigned based on pre existing traits in the human, personality etc, but from then on through birth its kind of decided by a ton of environmental factors (would it be funny if A parent and B parent produced a Z kid, would it make for a cool protag if an A kid was born into an entirely C family, the works) hybrids that dont already exist arent possible obv and a hybrid-species taur can be born to any species parent like everyone else

SOCIETY-WISE.. my au takes place a few centuries or so after the Great Taurification to give the society time to adjust. i have greatly considered seating and sleeping and cross species hygine products but im gonna talk abt this more in another post later bc it includes Art i think & also this is already long af and i cant add readmores on mobile

Series 2 Episodes 12 & 13: Army of Ghosts & Doomsday

Ok I'm just gonna cut to the chase I love this story.

First thing this episode does well: creates satisfying mysteries that lead into one another. Who are the ghosts? What's this big orb looking thing? (in the first ep) What's the genesis ark? Why does the Doctor keep wearing those retro 3d glasses? (in the second ep). It always feels like there's more to discover in this episode.

Secondly, I mean Daleks VS Cybermen it's the dream. Do the Cybermen ultimately get really cheapened in this story, being reduced to basically weaker Daleks? Yes. Am I fine with that because those corridor sass-off scenes get me every time? Also yes. I love the Cult of Skaro too, they're a fantastic way to explore the Daleks as the sort of experimentalists of the Dalek world.

Thirdly, we finally get the tragic end to The Doctor & Rose's story. Ngl there is a part of me that would've loved for Rose to have been sucked into the void and for The Doctor to have not got to say his final goodbyes, but he gets cut off and that's tragic enough ig. It's a decent ending to their arcs that does it's job.

And finally, I swear to God Jackie in this episode comes out with some bangers, funniest character in the episode by a mile and she really helps balance out the stakes. And obvs the scene with her meeting Pete is a banger, even tho they're standing way too far away from each other.

TL:DR/Overview: Yea it's p damn good. I think the biggest issue with this episode is the damage it does to the Cybermen in the show as a whole. I mentioned in my RoC/AoS review that you need to hone in on the specific horrors of the Cybermen in order to make them effective, and save a couple of lines that doesn't happen in this episode. I am willing to forgive it for this though, as I mostly enjoy everything else on offer. A tier.

Hera set up Persephone and hades knowing Damn well Hestia and Demeter made her a Candidate for TOGeM. Other than staying a Virgin forever and having temples idk what TOGeM actually does. Like we know why Demeter wants her daughter as a memeber but what’s the actual functionality of the group. Hera just seems like a bad friend/sister for setting up her friends daughter with an older guy just because she felt bad for using that guy as a bad up when he marriage gets bad.

what can you tell us about gimmicked light tubes compared to real light tubes and are real light tubes really used in deathmatches?

lolll i just answered another ask about gimmicked light tubes, but i'll expand a little more for you. but you have to remember, i am not a wrestler, i just watch too many deathmatches and noticed a real visible difference in the way they broke!

first, yeah. real, intact lighttubes are used in death matches. one of the funniest things i've ever seen was a bat with a massive bundle of tubes taped around it, wielded like a final fantasy sword. fucking incredible.

but yeah, fluorescent light tubes, straight from the hardware store. there is, from an interview i remember reading but have lost by now, a certain thickness that breaks "safer" than others, but i really couldn't tell you the specifics. i also feel like i remember something about taping the ends because it makes them shatter differently? once again, not a wrestler.

here, have nick gage getting tossed through a bunch of light tubes by rickey shane page, my mortal enemy. (rspring break 4, gcw, 2021, highly suggest you check out the match, but also the whole show. i can talk about it endlessly. the story, the destruction, the emotion. chefs kiss.)

so, here's where they "clearly gimmicked" bit comes in.

those light tubes are fully intact, and still full of all that mercury vapor (tho an extremely, extremely small amount), argon, neon, and all those other chemicals that make them light up. deathmatches are, at the core, spectacle matches. theyre big and crazy circus shows. obvs, wrestling is some carny shit.

light tubes are used, not to do max damage, but max out the spectacle. all those chemicals, and the whatever specific thickness of tube they use, shatters on impact into a puff of sharp, glittery magic. it looks huge, right? and it maximizes the blood visual without making massive, massive lacerations. you get a shitton of superficial cuts. big explosion and a lot of tiny papercuts. a good shower and youre off to church the next day.

(OBVIOUSLY i am aware of freak accidents, see: that time gage hit one bad and literally died. but real deathmatch guys make a big effort to be as safe as possible, given the circumstances. that's an outlier. he essentially fell and got stabbed by one, it wasn't broken over him.)

so the dynamite tubes.

the thickness of the glass is definitely different. the glass breaks into bigger chucks (which seems, to me, maybe a little more dangerous? oh well), instead of the tiny pieces you'd expect. you also dont get that great big puff of spooky dust, because i dont think even tony khan could afford the insurance on a crowd of people that big.
