Good evening from the UK everyone! Hope you’re all well. I’m on the last night of my little reading retreat and have barely done anything - just reading and relaxing which is perfect! Thank you @chrissireads so much for taking me away from it all. Today I’m doing a #peachesandcreamstack inspired by @neverawaste who featured a lovely stack on her page. All of these books are still on my TBR. Is anyone surprised? 🙈 The Fatal Tree - Jake Arnott The Sweetness Of Water - Nathan Harris His Bloody Project - Graeme Macrae Burnet Vagina - A Re-Education - Lynn Enright The Sellout - Paul Beatty The Transgender Issue - Shon Faye Tom-All-Alone’s - Lynn Shepherd Milk Fed - Melissa Broder I’d love to know if you’ve read any of these books or authors and what your thoughts were. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookstack #orangebookstack #creambookstack #thefataltree #jakearnott #thesweetnessofwater #nathanharrisauthor #hisbloodyproject #hisbloodyprojectgraememacraeburnet #vaginaareeducation #lynnenright #thesellout #paulbeatty #thetransgenderissue #shonfaye #tomallalones #lynnshepherd #milkfed #melissabroder #booksstillonmytbr #booksistillneedtoread https://www.instagram.com/p/ChFwPT1LhP9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Instead of shouting out a company this week, I want to introduce y'all to some of my favorite authors. There are plenty of David Sedaris' and John Irvings of the world, but not enough Chimamanda's, Paul's, Junot's, Jhumpa's and Imbolo's. I plan on getting my hands on some Ta-Nehisi Coates soon as well. Nine years after completing The White Boy Shuffle, I picked this up and knew the high-brow snark would be a welcome change. Paul Beatty is a master (pun intended...just read it). If someone wants to mail me their copy of Slumberland I’ll gladly accept. #paulbeatty #thesellout #thewhiteboyshuffle #bookreview #instabooks #igreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CGujK_2jtsVWe4bssHeND7jZHVPg7aNwOj1BcA0/?igshid=hhtqupti8rw4

I loved reading this book. It’s a fictional story that pokes fun at race through a black character that attempts to reinstate segregation. It’s so outrageous that you’d often find yourself laughing out loud and shaking your head. But, I suppose, that is the point of satire! (📷: @keelybeereads) #TheSellout #PaulBeatty #BooksfortheSoul

What if I post here more in 2018?
I shouldn’t make any promises, given that I only put up two posts all of last year, but maybe right this minute (and maybe only right this minute) I’m at least making it a goal for myself to update this blog more frequently. It’s so sad and spare, and the only way to solve that is to add to it.
I finished The Sellout back in July of last year, and since then I’ve been mired in a trio of books: Substitute has remained only compelling enough to read in super short bursts, and Mary Beard’s SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome has been only slightly better, so when not digging into them, I’ve been picking away at Stephen King’s IT. In fact, I’ve lately been reading IT pretty much exclusively, but I hope to get back to the others somewhere down the line.
Why I chose to take a break from two long tomes with a third even longer tome is a question I don’t have a good answer for, except to say I saw the film adaptation of the King book back in September and got a hankering. I’ve had a thing for the author’s particular brand of refined pulp and his fine ability to spin a good yarn ever since I read Misery in early high school, and IT was one of the few of his thicker books that I hadn’t yet tackled. Why do all his major works seem to be major in size, too?
Anyway, maybe making a more concerted effort to report back here will keep me reading all three books a little more frequently. And maybe I can even find some more interesting things to say about them and how I’m reading them—rather than merely noting that I am reading them.

Paul Beatty, who was born June 9, 1962, is a poet and novelist, and professor of writing at Columbia University. He won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Man Booker Prize for his novel “The Sellout”—the first time a writer from the United States won the Man Booker. His novel “The Sellout” chronicles an urban farmer who tries to spearhead a revitalization of slavery and segregation in a fictional Los Angeles neighborhood. 📚 #gsbauthorquotes #gsbquotes . . . . . . . . . . #gasstationburrito #onthisday #literaryhistory #bookstagram #books #bookworm #author #authorquotes #authormemes #writer #writerquotes #paulbeatty #thesellout #slavery #satire #manbookerprize #history #memory #emotion #emotionalbaggage #whatwecarry #blackvoices #blackauthors #blackwriters https://www.instagram.com/p/CBPKcKEhZux/?igshid=tknpskbt9dkv
