Are the "deaths" of older Kirby characters unserious?

For all the Kirby characters that are believed to have "died", I wonder if the ones in earlier periods of the series are not actually seriously dead.

The newer, Kumazaki era Kirby characters that have died are much more legitimate. Sectonia is absolutely 100% dead without a doubt. Same for Max Haltmann and Star Dream, as well as Void Termina. I also believe Fecto Elfilis to be dead, since the Forgo half is gone and Chaos Elfilis absorbed into Elfilin. I'm sure that Elfilin will be all that's left of Fecto Elfilis, meaning the original unsplit creature is a goner.

But what about the pre-Kumazaki Kirby characters that are believed to have "died"? It appears they're much less certain. It's ambiguous.

Marx looks like he died at the end of Milky Way Wishes. That impact onto Nova absolutely looks more than enough to kill Marx. How could he have survived that? He also doesn't appear for a very long time after Super Star and its remake. He's been absent in a lot of Kirby games, which can also lead to the belief that he died after MWW.

Although he does appear in Mass Attack... but I have doubts on its canonicity.

... And then he comes back in Star Allies! Seemingly out of nowhere. It's kind of funny that the lore never explains how the hell Marx survived his encounter with Kirby and just randomly comes back, now deciding he wants to team up with Kirby to stop Void Termina.

I get the sense that HAL didn't really think much of Marx's "death" like they thought of Sectonia's death. Marx came from an era where lore wasn't really a thing, so it's harder to take his death seriously.

It's still funny to think how the hell he survived the Nova impact, though. I guess he was just really durable? And I mean, Kirby does survive big impacts, such as Star Dream's explosion after destroying it, so I guess if Kirby could survive them, Marx probably could as well.

I can, of course, bring up my headcanon that Marx was barely durable enough to survive the Nova impact, but he was gravely injured. The only reason he survived is because Magolor and the Lor Starcutter showed up at the right time to save him.

Also, didn't it look like that Dark Meta Knight died at the end of Amazing Mirror when the mirror got shattered? It kinda did. But just like Marx, he also comes back out of nowhere for Star Allies with no explanation as to how he survived and got to the point of helping out.

I'm aware he also appears in Triple Deluxe's Dededetour, but I've always been incredibly loose about considering side modes as canon. Or I guess it's extra proof that older character "deaths" are unserious.

What does this mean for other pre-Kumazaki Kirby characters that may have "died"? Such as Nightmare, the many leaders of Dark Matter (Blade, Zero, Zero-Two) and Drawcia? Are they still alive?

If Marx was thought to have "died" but then survived and is still around, who's to say that couldn't also be the case for Nightmare?

Nightmare has not appeared for a long time after Kirby's Adventure and its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. In fact I'm pretty sure the only other appearance he's made in the series is... a parallel version of him in Super Kirby Clash, and I think that's basically it.

But Marx was similar! He didn't show up for a bunch of games after Super Star. And then he just randomly shows up in Star Allies lmao.

Maybe Nightmare is still out there, recuperating for a long time after Kirby kicked his ass. Perhaps he could be planning his next attack as he tries to become much, much, much stronger than he was before.

And maybe Dark Matter could make a return. Maybe one of the Dark Matter leaders in the DMT games could be recuperating and planning a new attack, or a brand new Dark Matter leader could exist.

I think it'd be awesome of Nightmare or Dark Matter were to come back as villains in future Kirby games. There's huge amounts of potential for how powerful they could be in the Kumazaki era. They could easily expand on these villains' powers and motivations.

Imagine if Nightmare grew stronger and, instead of making only Dream Landers have nightmares, what if he was able to make multiple planets or even the whole universe have nightmares? They didn't really push his potential far enough, in my opinion. And Dark Matter could be a lot more ferocious and scary in the Kumazaki era.

HAL didn't really seem to confirm Nightmare's or Dark Matter's deaths the same way they did for Sectonia and Haltmann. Maybe they could still be out there. And maybe they could attack again?

Just a cool thought, in my opinion.

You're back, Mari by Anonymous. i hope you all expected this one. this is the mentioned one on no.17. im not sure how many trigger warnings i need considering this entire fic is so infamous i'd be shocked if someone didn't know. i don't want to risk spoiling it so just look at the tags. i was debating putting the sequel on here but decided against it. after all, the absolutely visceral reaction the pursuit au can garner from the fandom after just being mentioned probably has enough potential for a case study.

I can’t believe it’s gonna be a year since 2022 r/place? Like what the hell lmao 😭

Honestly I don’t expect r/place to come back this year for Reddit’s yearly April Fools joke because it’ll be predictable and it hasn’t been five years yet… although they could possibly add a twist to it (like how 2022’s ended with a white void unlike 2017). But I know people have been speculating and digging into the code and have found “evidence”. Oh well.

In any case, some thoughts from someone who was very chronically online during 2022 r/place and wrote long update posts daily:

1. If you’re part of a fandom and want to contribute to a mural, it’s very likely that some sort of central organisation has been set up on the subreddit and / or on Discord. And you should probably check it out before you do anything about the mural.

Organisation and diplomacy is key to r/place. Just because you personally want to expand doesn’t mean the central organisation wants to because it risks angering allies. Last year I saw people getting frustrated over “rogues” not following the instructions determined by the central organisation, which threatened our harmonious coexistence with a much bigger group (in this case it was Brazil).

I’m not trying to gatekeep but it’s honestly easier if you do want the crowd wants you to do instead of doing it on your own. Especially if you’re a smallish fandom trying to survive.

2. As a follow up to the above point, instructions from central organisations are often fluid and change very quickly. This is due to the ever changing geopolitics of r/place. Allies can become enemies, enemies can become allies. But I think usually people are pretty good at spreading information around.

3. It can be quite easy to get sucked into the virtual world of r/place. I severely needed to touch grass after last year’s craziness. It can be fun, but it can also be very taxing, both mentally, emotionally, and physically (if you’re the type to stay up late). So remember to take care of yourself!

I genuinely think r/place is fascinating. It’s like a microcosm of the world, with its geopolitics, borders, alliances, creativity, and all of that is over pixels on Reddit. Everyone is so serious over unserious things. It’s also extremely funny when you hear stuff like “Love Live wants to nuke Macedonia” and “Sexy Sex requires our help”.

I also like how people have different recollections of this event because naturally people are in different subreddits, timezones, experience things differently, but it all comes together to form a collective story on r/place. And it’s crazy how long the impacts can last for. Like I still fondly think about those four-ish days when Reddit collectively lost their minds. It felt like a fever dream. Truly one of the experiences of all time.

he'd still have these like lofty dreams and i think he'd still want to chase them somehow, but he wouldn't have the connections nor the charm normal ace has. he'd be, at most, some stand-up comedian who performs nights at some local venue and he's just an opener for the main act. maybe he'd sing and put in the work to be good at it, but a big part of this kinda career is the ppl you know so :pensive emoji:

i am a lore head and i won't even apologize for it i was writting essays in my friends dms on the wholeeee thing until Um techno's passing where i lost any and all motivation to tap in (he was my favorite). idk it was so special i can atest that the reason it was sooo build up was because it worked in a way you could both take things at face value (as in, dream looking for the disc using his minecraft abilities being translated to him having those abilities in-character) and also imaginate stuff (such as burning george's house and/or the pogtopia arc could both be dramatized and downplayed). IDK IT WAS SO FUCKING SPECIAL

i do agree that q's lore being of incredible visual quality and cinematographic helped create this sense of greatness but it lacked so much succint stuff. you couldn't do anything but strong lore beats with that kind of lore, so a mixture of normal rp-ing and big lore cinematographics would've been good, but he missed the equlibrium and made a lot of people very annoying in how they reacted to the "writting" of the dsmp (like, remember those people saying that certain characters should have certain endings for how their characters had done, while the ccs were just having fun? yeah the change between dnd kind of rping to the fake idea of this being a fully scripted and narratively consistent arcs was q lolol). ANYWAY IDKKK lots of thoughts about everything always

like people forgot really quickly that this used to be a mishmash of breaking bad and hamilton roleplay 😭 and most of the ccs are not actors or writers but they clearly had a lot of fun with it and again the relatively unserious medium of streaming made a lot of those moments actually more epic becuase it was serious but also not. i love your persepctive on this! its kinda funny you mention the dream irl abilities a little bit because i remember a few months ago friday got slammed for that here by an insane lorehead who was very much of the Everything Must Have A Reason crowd even though that was WAYY before any actual substantative plot HAPPENED.

i agree with the balance aspect and even though a lot more interactions between LN characters happened on other peoples streams (and was relatively more chill), i think the emphasis on these huge lore streams was a detriment to the story it was trying to tell whatever that was. i was confused more than sad that slime fucking died because as a casual dsmp viewer i only tapped into the big streams and nothing about the way slime was intro'd or integrated into the story through those streams really captured me the way someone might be swept into like crimeboys for example. it just wasnt the same. and also on the point of obsessive viewers FUCK michael i wish sapnap killed his ass

Woody Allen goes bananas

To flummox is one popular way to hook the viewer. Woody Allen, the director and main star of the film, was definitely ahead of his time when he chose the title for his release. Anticipation of the title drop, which then turns out to be completely unrelated to the plot, is an audience-engaging trick more likely to be seen in the latest Hollywood blockbuster, not in a ‘70s slapstick, but it serves its purpose. Bananas is a time well spent, but you might want to taste test before serving it at a family dinner. 

Cold open takes us to a fictional Latin American country of San Marcos, where the current president is about to be assassinated. From the very beginning, Allen establishes Bananas as an unserious tale of all-time comedy. Long story short, the main character Fielding Mellish is a clumsy, awkward blue-collar worker with a slight sometimes-not-so-slight obsession with women. He meets Nancy, a social activist, whom he tries very hard to impress. Tragically for Fielding, the woman breaks up with him for the sole reason that he is simply not interesting enough. This harsh reality-check pushes him to move to San Marcos, where he plans to get involved in revolutionary activities in order to win his sweetheart back. In a twist of fate, he gets caught up in the country's political turmoil. 

The main character does so not without a fair share of strangely funny scene sequences. Bananas is overflowing with jokes, puns, and taunts. It is a comedy of witty, at times unconventional humor, definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Yet, it is mostly a well-balanced mix of potentially savage banter and harmless playfulness. The director incorporates a substantial amount of situational jokes, as well as wordplay and good old-fashioned innocuous stereotypes. A sour bite is that Fielding Mellish’s neurotic behavior is the basis for many of the jokes, which makes these scenes a bit stodgy, but they are still highly digestible. 

The great comedic timing is one thing, but the nonsensical storytelling is another. These aspects extraordinarily correspond with each other, curating a one of a kind, occasionally dream-like, feature film. It becomes clear that Bananas is meant to entertain first and foremost as a laugh trigger, rather than a complex mind expander. Many of Fielding’s misadventures are served only as an appetizer, a mere midnight snack even, that are in no way necessary for the totality of the experience (not like the big Sunday roast, which is the highlight of the week). Scenes like the one in a New York subway, or when Fielding takes the viewer to meet his parents, do not exactly enrich the plot, apart from perhaps providing a pinch more of insight into the mind and life of the main character. What I’m trying to say is, Bananas is a true comedy to the core, and one has to judge it as one. Pointless would be to praise a brownie for its calorie-providing qualities, when it is mainly supposed to make you happy with sugar rush. The same applies to Bananas.

However, it must be said that Woody Allen has certainly found a way to offend everyone, no exceptions. Bananas strikes a joke towards the Christian, the feminine, the gay, the Jewish, and the Hispanic. While it would be immediately disregarded as a 2024 release, it should be taken with a pinch of salt as a 1970s watch. There is a kind of concession of judgment when no one is safe from the shellfire of comedy, more often than not that of acquired taste, too. However, I have to confess that once or twice I wondered whether the light chuckle I let out from time to time would get me canceled had the joke been told in a social setting. 

Last but not least, as expected of an esteemed banana-obsessed blog, where are the bananas that I was promised? Woody Allen gives us merely a name-drop, and doesn’t grant the yellow goodness even a second of screen time. Pretty scandalous, if you ask me. But nevertheless, I consider giving Bananas a green light. Maybe the bananas were the big smiles that we had along the way.
