I cried watching Coco, I felt very seen and it made me nostalgic for this ephemeral mexicaness that I could not have. When I talked to my parents about it, they were like “eh, it was ok.” Followed by a bunch of nitpicky complaints about it.

We all moved to the US at the same time, but of course, I was 11 and my parent were in their 30s. their Mexican identity was fully formed, but mine was not. So decades of synthesizing, and absorbing, and rejecting, and surviving American Culture have made me something else. This whole time that I've been changing and growing, and coming to terms with my internal diaspora, my parents were "Mexicans Living in the US".

I went to watch Blue Beetle with my wife and, again, felt seen, even got a little choked up talking to her about it afterward. “His family is so much like yours” she said, and I agree, but I can’t help but think that if my parents watch it they’ll focus on all the things that make them different from us; all the virgin of guadalupe stuff, all the floridian stuff, all the spanglish, and say something like “it was fine, the machine gun grandma was funny.” And nothing else.

In a lot of ways I’m jealous; My parents don’t crave representation from their media because their Mexican identity is complete and intact, because they can watch Mexican shows on cable and feel fully reflected. But I’m not from here or there, and I’m only represented when the contradiction is on screen.

don't cry. pour a small-seeming serving of any pasta noodle you'd like in a deep microwave-safe bowl, just barely cover the noodles with water, microwave for roughly 2 minutes 30 seconds, stir, microwave for 2 more minutes, carefully drain the pasta water from the pasta, liberally mix shredded non-mozzarella cheese into the hot noodles, and pour small amounts of milk in (maaaybe a school milk carton's worth or two at most) to taste and to make it creamier, okay?

Anyway. WIP! I feel like this'll be fun if I keep going but I have a tendency to lose all motivation if I leave it so I usually do things in one shot. However, I need to go to bed.

I feel like this is a lot of research that people will never see unless they themselves are Mexican but one of the reasons I make/draw things like this is so people feel seen. I looked over a couple things for this, quite fun! This is supposed to be a chiapaneca dress, but I am not used to this more "realistic" style so the dress actually needs to spread out more. It's so pretty though! Will either be very fun or very torturous to colour

This is Paloma! I haven't started on her wings and at this point I'm not sure how to add them in. She's Mexican and was a fashion designer. I'm using that as an excuse to continue putting eyeliner on Alexis, who she is friends (?) with. She's older than him.

I have seen somewhere that Spanish Spanish and Mexican Spanish are slightly different, the two should still be able to communicate. I don't know what you call a "big sister/miss" in Spanish, or if that's even something you do. I guess Senorita would be it? I'm trying to convey that Alexis is showing respect to her though, so that feels like it's not it.

I'm debating between wing styles also. I think colourful wings (Like a parrot) would be pretty, and not as common as dove wings (Which are her namesake). Also it was while I was looking those up that I found out the Mexican flag has an eagle on it! The golden eagle wings sound pretty interesting, if a little bit drab, but having her be tied to the national bird would be fun I think. And lastly, wood pigeon wings, which are also her namesake, only in Latin.

I like Dick being romani as much as the next guy, but his situation in particular is one where im like. yeah, it's understandable if you'd rather not. firstly bc he was just white for most of his 80+ years of existing, and secondly bc the origins of making him romani are just straight up racial stereotyping... It's a hornets nest.

but as for why i keep it in my image of him. he's just so deeply detached from his heritage in a way that i find kinda comforting. im not romani specifically, but due to my family background, i have little to no connection to any cultural heritage on my moms side (and neither does she, really). Dick's relationship with his heritage isn't explored well from what I've seen of it, but the concept itself is meaningful. the concept of being detached. finding out there's a part of you, a part of your family that's different from what you thought it was. different from what you thought of yourself. different from what people think of you. you don't know it at all. It doesn't feel like it's yours to claim. a disconnect. It's isolating, but knowing you're not alone in your loneliness is an important concept, I think. I like the idea for its potential rather than the execution of it. I don't think I'm explaining this well, partially bc the whole thing brings up a lot of my own messy feelings.

TLDR: the actual stories about Dick's being romani aren't done well, but the bare-bones concept of it is something that resonates with me.

i'm going to the USA twice in 2024 and i'm so excited. i love americas big wide straight roads... tho i hate them in cities. very unecessary. i love ur big supermarkets (britain could Never). i think the landscape is beautiful. i love being in restaurants in rural areas and my wife and her family order and then i order and the waitress is like !! and i'm like yes! unexpectedly english! what a suprise! which is Really helped by the way I speak sounds like two steps away from a 1940s radio presenter. i also love how big the rivers and mountains are. i love getting actually good mexican food. i'm so excited!!
