”Why do you call yourself Windfighter?”

Yamato blinked. Looked up from the newspaper and looked at his kids. Both stared at him, Tim leaned forwards and Maria nonchalantly leaned against the back of the chair.

”Did I forgot to log out somewhere?” Yamato asked.

”Yeah”, Tim answered.

He was almost vibrating. Yamato wondered what he was expecting from the answer. He grinned.

”Are you suuuure you want to know?”

”Yamato”, Sora warned from the kitchen. ”Dear.”

”Couldn’t care less”, Maria answered.

But Yamato could tell she was curious as well. Tim almost bounced on the chair.

”Well”, Yamato answered.

Closed the newspaper and leaned back on the chair. Looked at the ceiling.

”It’s from a long time ago. I was just a few years older than you are now.”

He had been fourteen, close to fifteen. The best years of his youth. He moved the newspaper so it was aligned with the edge of the table, could feel Sora’s eyes burn his neck.

”Your uncle and I was on our way home, me from bandpractice and he from skateboarding, when we were stopped.”

”I’ve been looking for you.”

Whoever, or whatever it was, stared at Takeru and Yamato stepped between them, arm out to shield Takeru, looked at the person. They had long, tousled hair, dirt, leaves and sticks stuck in it. A colourful mask in the shape of a bird covered their face, wings made of feathers along their arms. Yamato wondered if they were real, if this was a digimon. They were floating in the air, a cloud gathered at their feet.

”Give me your powers”, they said.

Takeru grabbed Yamato’s guitar, pulled at it.

”Yamato, run away.”

Yamato planted his feet firmer on the ground. He had gotten better, less desperate to protect Takeru, more trusting. Knew that Takeru could take care of himself. But he couldn’t leave, couldn’t step out of the way. He needed to protect Takeru from whatever this lunatic was.

”Yamato!” Takeru repeated.

The creature’s eyes narrowed. It had to be a digimon. Humans didn’t float.

”I’m not letting you hurt Takeru!”

The creature lifted its wings, lifted further into the air. Yamato should have felt scared, felt fear drip along his back, but he didn’t. The sky rumbled, thunder roared above them from what had just been a clear sky.

”Then go down with him.”

The creature’s wings started glowing, a bright green that cut through the air, made Yamato’s eyes ache. He lifted a hand above his eyes, felt someone tug on his jacket.

”Razor winds!”

The wings cut through the air, the light thrown off of them. Towards Yamato and Takeru. Yamato reached behind himself to make sure Takeru was safe, Takeru pulled at Yamato to get him out of the way. But Yamato planted his feet even firmer, leaned forwards, towards the attack. It would hurt, he didn’t know how much, but at least Takeru would be fine, able to run away.

Then it hit. The air was knocked out of him, light spread around him. Pulsated. But it didn’t hurt. The creature stared, its wings started glowing again. Yamato lifted a hand, stared at the light pulsating around it. It felt like an autumn breeze, moved with his body.

”Razor winds!”

Another attack. Yamato closed his eyes, felt the breeze around him grow stronger. Explore every inch of his body.

”Razor winds!”

It wouldn’t hurt him. Yamato let his arms fall to his sides, took a breath. The breeze rushed into his lungs and he didn’t need to breathe any longer. Wind filled him up, blew around him, made him glow. He was full of energy, was about to explode.

”Sailor evolution!”

His clothes disappeared, his guitarr. Replaced by leathery armor in a soft green, almost white, color. Arrows at his hip and two small wings on his back.

”Windfighter.”

He felt dizzy, the world returning to him, but different. Everything had a whitegreen tint it hadn’t had before.

”My turn”, he said.

Grinned. Lifted a hand, drew circles towards the sky. Wind gathered, blew faster and faster. Held back by only his will.

”Tornado!”

He threw the winds towards the creature, watched as it was engulfed, thrown into the air and disappeared into the sky. Then the winds disappeared. Yamato took a stumbling step, seconds from keeling over. But Takeru’s hand was on his chest, supported him.

”Well then”, Takeru said, voice trembled, ”welcome to the family.”

Maria and Tim both stared at Yamato. He grinned.

”You’re lying”, Maria said.

”Maybe I am”, Yamato answered.

Tim stood up, bounced.

”Is it true, is it? Are you a magical knight?”

Yamato laughed, grabbed the newspaper and opened it again.

”Maybe I am”, he said. ”Or maybe I just had a period where I was really into bows when I was a kid.”

”That’s so lame”, Maria said. ”You’re cringe.”

”Of course I am – I’m a parent.”

Maria shook her head, stood up.

”Come on, Tim, let’s stop wasting time here.”

Tim hesitated, less inclined to disbelieve the stories Yamato told them. But after a while he turned around, followed Maria back towards the living room. Yamato wondered what exactly they were doing out there. Sora put a hand on his shoulder, squeezed it hard enough to leave bruises.

”I know”, Yamato answered. ”I won’t tell the Oracle if you won’t.”

”I’m sure he already knows”, Sora answered. ”We weren’t allowed to tell anyone.”

Yamato knew. He let out a sigh, put the paper down again.

”Sometimes I wonder about that time. What would have happened if it hadn’t been a warrior of wind who was after Takeru?”

”Yamato?”

Yamato looked at his hands. He couldn’t feel the power of the wind any longer, it had long since faded, even if it hadn’t completely left him yet.

”Would I have been someone else, gotten another element? Or would the attack have killed me?”

Sora smiled, wrapped her arms around him.

”We were stupid back then, weren’t we?”

”I’m not sure I would have done it differently today”, Yamato laughed.

Intertwined his fingers with Sora’s, leaned his head back against her.

”I knew they wouldn’t believe it”, he said. ”Not until it’s their time, and they would have found out by then anyway.”

”...but why do you go by Windfighter?”

Yamato laughed, let go of Sora and grabbed the paper. Opened it to a page he hadn’t read yet.

”Do you know how hard it is to come up with new and unique internet aliases? Windfighter works perfectly most of the time.”

”Fine”, Sora said. Kissed his cheek. ”Just remember to log out next time.”

Yamato’s heart skipped a beat. He dropped the paper, stood up. Let out a loud ’shit’ before he darted towards the livingroom. That’s what they were doing out there.

All that I wanted was just to be haunted by you by chasingfictions - After the events of "The Body," Jenny's ghost bullies Giles into moving in with the Summers girls. This one made me BAWL.

Appropriate conduct by The_Eclectic_Bookworm - an increasingly angry series of memos between Principal Synder & Jenny, Giles, and the other teachers of Sunnydale High. Absolutely hilarious.

i belong to time, you belong to me by chasingfictions - Dru knows when she meets Spike, that he will fall in love with a slayer. She forgets, until she doesn't. Beautiful, poetic, and very Dru.

One Girl in All the World by zedpm - a trans!Buffy AU, where she was born in a boy's body and is still the slayer. A beautifully done AU, with Oz and (surprisingly! Riley) as particular standouts. Minor Spike/Buffy.

The Holy Grail of Buffy Fics: Long, With a Focus on an Ensemble Cast. Absolute Masterpieces.

hit rewind by untiljanuary - Hands down, the best Buffy fic I've ever read. Buffy (from some time in season 6, but unclear when), is sent back in time to season 3. What makes it so interesting is that it's from everyone else's perspective! The author writes Cordelia, Willow, Faith, Angel and Spike in particular so well. Lots of interesting character work, though the plot hasn't deviated too much from canon so far.

Ships: Buffy/Spike, Angel/Cordelia, Willow/Tara, Anya/Xander. The Buffy/Angel ends on mutual terms.

two roads diverged (and that has made all the difference) by RoseyPoseyPie - a Buffy season 5/Angel season 2 crossover. Hoping to escape Glory, the Scoobies end up in Pylea with the Fang Gang. This fic is absolutely hilarious (the scene where everyone gets high and drunk together is a notable standout). The author writes Anya, Lorne and Cordelia in particular super well. Dawn and Angel's dynamic is also amazing.

Ships: Buffy/Spike, Angel/Cordelia, Anya/Xander, Willow/Tara.

don't know how to stick around, but I wanna by chasingfictions - a series in an alternate universe where Faith, instead of going to prison, joins Angel Investigations. Very Fang Gang centric, but really builds up their family bond. Darla, Faith, and Wesley were stand outs to me in this.

Ships: eventual Faith/Buffy, and minor canon pairings. Faith briefly pursues other girls, including Darla.

Best Spuffy Centric Fic

wouldn't it be nice? by SummerFrost - an alternative universe, where the will-be-done spell in season 4 goes a little differently, and Spike and Buffy start a slow crawl towards friendship that becomes... something. So soft and sweet. Has two sequels, and the season 6 one in particular is WONDERFUL.

Every Letter That You Write Me by othellia - the obligatory fandom soulmate AU. Young Buffy is absolutely adorable in this one, and Spike and Buffy's relationship is bittersweet, raw, and believable.

Choices by lafillesauvage - An AU. After Season 5 of Angel, Spike becomes human. Angel does not. Buffy still chooses Angel, and these are the consequences. Slightly excessive Angel bashing, but the characterization of Buffy and Spike, and little notes like Buffy's relationship with Giles being slowly fixed and Willow getting a non-Kennedy girlfriend are great! Buffy/Angel with a happy Spike/Buffy ending.

The Darkling by OffYourBird - the iconic time travel Spuffy fic. Buffy goes back in time and meets Spike... in the 1970s. His slow path to redemption starts differently, with tons of interesting changes in the timeline. Be warned, this one is LONG and smutty. Shout out for making me believe Giles/Anya could work as a couple!

Inside Man by HollyDB - An Angel season 5 fic. Spike calls Buffy. This shows all the things that change when Buffy has a spy on the inside of the Fang Gang. Follows canon up until the last episode, but provides fun context.

Short, Cute Cangel Fics

give them all that they can drink by eagle_eyes. The one where Cordelia is ace. Amazingly written, and the Cangel relationship is so soft and believable.

Another Chance by NikitaDreams - After the events of Angel: the Series, Cordelia travels back in time. Focus on Cangel and Connor. Lots of cute family dynamics.

Halloween Happily Ever After by GeckoGirl89 - cute, mutual pining between Angel and Cordelia in season 3. Angst with a happy ending. Really highlights how oblivious Cangel were to each other's feelings.

Just HANNIBAL right now (and for like the last seven years or so). Been vaguely thinking about picking up a second but nothing has caught my interest strongly enough.

I try to, and I enjoy doing so, but sometimes the brainworms win and I don't get stuff done even when I really want to.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Breathless

I don't love this story, but "Hannibal is effectively braindead after the fall, but Will keeps caring for the body and feels that Hannibal is there with him, up until the body dies and Will turns himself in because there isn't any point anymore" probably counts as the most angsty? If you are in the market for a "Hannibal receives a brain injury and he, along with everyone else around him, has to cope with that" story Tina's For Remembrance (Holes in the Floor of the Mind) is a much better pick. And as I continue to think about it, Means of Influence has a pretty angsty ending.

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of my stories have slightly bittersweet but still mostly happy endings. Part of the thing about that is I think it's really hard to envision a situation where Will is like 100% Happy Happy, his own mind hates him too much and every little scrap of happiness needs to be fought for and then vigilantly guarded. But I put both him and Hannibal through so much that I always want them to be as close to content as they each can be.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have gotten two flavors of Fic Hate. 1.) People calling the five year old kid OC in ATTACHMENT slurs like "r*tard" and saying "he belongs in jail" and etc.

Every time Hannibal or Will fuck someone who isn't each other at least one person decides to Yell At Me.

I think I've gotten the old "you didn't tag for bottom Hannibal!!" nonsense once or twice too, but who hasn't?

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

A little. I actually started Hannishark bc I was really intimidated by sex scenes and wanted to see if I could pull off a short monsterfucker story. I feel like I've gotten better at writing these but am generally more comfortable leaving them sparce on anatomical details and big on feelings/conversations.

10. Do you write crossovers? If so, what's the craziest one?

I've got a WRONG TURN crossover series that I'm very proud of here: Bear Mountain Road AU. You don't need to have seen any of the movies to read it, or anything, the movies' premise of "a clan of inbred mountain cannibals waylays travelers" is really just an excuse to put Hannibal (and Will and D, as child members of the cannibal family) In Situations. If I counts as a cross over, I've got a universe swap between the novels and NBC HANNIBAL here: Shiloh

I also have a vague idea for a SAW / HANNIBAL crossover but I've been sitting on that for so long, who knows if it'll ever happen?

Yes, several times.

48! Wowza! That's not counting fics I only post here (like my Writers Iron Chefs and the Bangathon)

338,089. That's kind of crazy, I'm not gonna lie. And some of those words aren't filthy :P

The Pedro Pascal Cinematic Universe!

4. Top 5 fics by kudos

Something New, One Very Good Night, Both Sides of the Door, A Sweet Response to Tragedy, and Good Company. 4 out of 5 of these are from I Think of You, which does warm my little heart. I did laugh that their popularity is completely out of order from the series.

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes yes yes! Every single one I get! I'll even yank your tags out and comment on them when they make me especially happy. It's the best part of sharing my stories.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

TECHNICALLY One Very Good Night had the angstiest ending before I continued the series. Same with Cognitive Dissonance! Apparently I get to an angsty end then just write a part 2.

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think that's tied with the real ending to my Whiskey & Westworld series, and all the gooey soft fun of my Javi G series. Both make my heart glow in different ways.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Knock on wood, nothing so far. I've gotten a couple of interpretations of my fics that have made me cock my head because I just don't think the person read the story, or if they did they skimmed over the character development part. But otherwise I've had a very nice time with everyone here <3

9. Do you write smut?

If you don't know by now, I'm not sure what you've been reading...

10. Craziest crossover?

100% Whiskey & Westworld. Golden Circle meets android theme park? Lusting over cowboys and having existential crises? It fit better than I ever thought it would and I still love the crap out of it.

(though as a side note, having Javi P be the person who helped Santi find his girls in the SW!Frankie AU is another fav)

HELP I'M TORN. It's a tie between Din and my Reader in I Think of You and Dieter and Murch in Best Laid Plans. I think about both of them so so so much.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will

I have a handful of small WIPs in a folder that who knows if they'll come to fruition. I think the greatest contender is probably the Post-Apocalyptic Frankie I tossed around because The Last of Us came out and it might just meld into a Joel story instead.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'm good at pacing and giving enough description to keep a reader engaged but not bogged down with details. People connect with my reader characters in a way that makes me super happy. And I write damn good smut.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I can't write outlines or my brain says "it's done :)" and I never write the story. I can't write out of order. I struggle with making characters have meaningful fights and arguments because I'm non-confrontational IRL and it makes me anxious.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language

Flavor! I love reading it! I tend to shy away from writing it because as someone who knows another language, it never feels natural to me to throw it in. Pet names are a nice way to use it, and I'll allude to speaking other languages in descriptions, but it's difficult so I tend to not add it much in my stories.

19. First fandom you wrote for

Gundam Wing when I was about eight or nine. Part of my username is in homage to that! My friends and I would write our fanfics and then read them all out loud at sleepovers together. Pre-internet, this was my Tumblr lol.

20. Favorite fic you've written

You know, I love all of my fics a whole damn lot, and my top ones are still hard favs. But I think for a story that came out of my heart in a really nice way and that I hold a little closer than the others, The Plan might just top them a tiny bit.

20 Questions for Fic Writers

Before I begin, there may be spoilers below!

1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 142! But a lot of them are one-shots.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? It's 355,968, surprisingly. I'm pretty sure I've seen individual fics longer than this. But also, I think that's a pretty big number for me considering..

3. What fandoms do you write for? Only and only, exclusively Avatar, The Legend of Korra.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Chaos: Chaos was my first ever multi-chapter fic. It stars Lin Beifong, no surprise there, thrust with this eclectic group consisting of her "found family". Primarily focused on Linumi (Lin x Bumi), the fic actually serves as a post canon fix it.

Soul: Soul quite literally is written from the soul. It mostly focuses on the relationship between Lin and Tenzin (ofc, it's LinxTenzin) and explores their connection beyond the physical realm. It's not just about two people who fell in and out of love over the course of time, but about two souls that ache and burn for the other.

The Pledge: This was supposed to be a Lin x Tenzin one-shot of Tenzin falling victim to some kind of out of body, false-memory-confabulation situation where he just quite literally forgets that he wasn't married to Lin. I really wanted to leave this fic as is, but a lot of people asked for a part 2 and the people pleaser in me didn't wanna disappoint. I didn't love how the fic turned out, but oh well. I love the first chapter though.

Abscond: Another multi-chapter! This one is Lin x Mako. It's a series of events that led to Lin and Mako finding commonality and having this flirtatious banter that neither could control. It's a little dramatic, but fun nonetheless.

Laws of Physics: This one's different. It's my Lin x Bumi modern AU, they're both college professors in their late 30s, early 40s respectively. Like chaos, it features almost every character (not all in great detail ofc), and it's been so fun to re-imagine everyone in this modern setting.

5. Do you respond to comments? Yes, always! I may be a little behind sometimes, but I always make it a point to respond. I love, love, love, love comments!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? There might be a tie here: So Many Signs: It's a post-breakup Linzin fic where they see each other for the first time at a gala. A hundred percent based on Exxile by Taylor Swift. Chimera: I'm not sure it fully comes across, but Bumi has this recurring dream about drinking with Lin where they play games and kiss- turns out, this dream is what's flashing before his eyes as he's drowning in deep waters to his death. Yeah, whoa. Why did I write this?

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Okay, I think they're all happy!

Okay, but jokes aside, I think It's Time To Make Time kinda gives everyone a very happy ending. Oh, and Ghost of Weddings!

8. Do you get hate on fics? I have gotten hate maybe once or twice on AO3. It's not typical. But it's there- and it's funny. Everyone on Tumblr hates me though lmao.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I have attempted smut a few times! I'll be honest, it isn't great. I've read some fantastic smut so I just know I don't fall in the "smut writer" category. I mostly write a lil bangity-bang-bang for Lin. That's about it.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Do crossovers between my real life and Lin Beifong fanfiction count? If not, then no I haven't written crossovers. But if yes, then it's Exhaustion. Way to expose myself lmao.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No, but I would love to! There's some really wonderful authors out there and I would LOVE to write with them.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? It's a three way tie between Linzin-Linumi-Linzolt. I can't pick. I do love other ships from other fandoms, but let's stick to what we know lol.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I'm going to be greeted with pitchforks for this one, but it may wind up being Waging Wars. I kinda forgot what my initial premise for the fic was (should've written it down, I know), so I'm gonna focus on stuff I have mapped out instead. I'm sorry. I will try my best coming back to it though, I promise.

16. What are your writing strengths? I think my ideas are pretty good. The way I can visualize or imagine up these situations often take me aback too.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? The writing part of it. The more I get out of practice, the more I struggle- which leads to taking insane amounts of time between chapters.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I guess if it fits the characters/story/universe, it's fair game. I've never done it though.

Yes! I can't rest easy until I've responded to all my comments.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Heh, I thrive on angst, so this is a very hard question. I can't choose just one. It's a tie between Monomachy (Maedhros and Fingon cross paths during the Third Kinslaying), Happy Ending (Maedhros daydreaming, it's just... bleak) and Alone in the Unknown (Maglor reaches his breaking point, Maedhros reached his a long time ago; this entire series is angsty, but this part is the angstiest of all).

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I went looking and was surprised to discover that I've written fewer happy endings than I thought :D But I still have some!

Peculiar Spiritual Connection - QP Russingon and their happy, carefree post-canon ending with just a smidgen of angst.

Greetings Without Farewells - Teenage Maedhros and Maglor, kid Celegorm and Fingon are happy in the bliss of Valinor.

What's in a Name - Debatable because the protagonist, Turgon, is decidedly not happy, but everyone else is, so...

8. Do you get hate on fics? Hasn't happened yet, thankfully. I hope it never will.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I actually started writing smut and am actively trying not to be embarrassed about it. As to what kind... What kinds are there? :D So far, I've written two kinds - wouldn't this be fucked up and wouldn't this be hot. Here's what I have:

Proxy - Maedhros/Fingon, unrequited Maedhros/Maglor. Wouldn't this be fucked up kind of fic. All characters are definitely fucked up.

The Hunters - Maedhros/Aredhel and they are both women. Wouldn't this be hot kind of fic. It would.

Kaleidoscope - Fingon/Sons of Feanor, M-rated but still fucked up.

Purification - Maedhros/Thingol. Actually, I think this is both wouldn't it be fucked up and wouldn't it be hot.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? My only attempt at writing a crossover crashed and burned. It was supposed to be SPN/Silm :/

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I hope not! I'm not aware of it at least.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! Very nice people have translated some of my fics into Chinese and Russian.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Once, in a different fandom. It was a reincarnation AU, and me and the other author took turns writing each life of the characters. It was very fun.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Every WIP is a WIP I want to finish but doubt I ever will. If seriously, it's probably my Maedhros on the Thangorodrim fic. I started it about five years ago and haven't finished it yet. And it's not a long fic! If I finish it, it'll be 5k at most, I think. I don't know, I'm just over Maedhros suffering. I want him to be happy. That's a lie, but I just can't deal with the whole Thangorodim torture.

16. What are your writing strengths? Dialogue. Twist endings. Breaking people's hearts.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Descriptions. Beautiful comparisons and metaphors. Also, I have a very narrow focus, meaning that there is only one fandom, one ship and very few characters I write for. I rarely diversify.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic. Not a fan. A few words are fine, but entire lines are too much for me.

20 Questions For Fic Writers

1. How many works do you have on Ao3? A total of 37, with 28 posted anonymously under a previous account, 6 posted under cinnamonbreeze (one is in a private collection), and 3 that I have orphaned. There's also probably about....100 others I have just simply deleted over the years.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 132,240 words.

3. What fandoms do you write for? For cinnamonbreeze, just Avatar: the Last Airbender. For the previous account, ATLA, TLOK, Borderlands 2, The Owl House, Fruits Basket, and Xmen: Evolution.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

The Break in the Bend - Jetko, originally a oneshot that explored what would have happened if Jet had joined the Gaang in the third season, and the progression of Jet's relationship with Zuko from meeting him on the ferry to post canon. And then I added a couple more chapters. I feel like I didn't really give this one a satisfying ending, so, like everything else, there's probably going to be more added to it at some point.

The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows - otherwise known as the 'Zuko Figures It Out AU.' This has been a fun wip so far, figuring out how things would go with one change to a canon event. Jetko

The Closest of Calls - the oneshot that ihas been expanded into a multi chaptered fic. It is also a Jetko fic, and just a little fic about how it might've gone if Zuko had saved Jet from Lake Laogai.

All You Wanted - I wrote this (and the first fic in the series, Everything I Never Had) while dealing with some family issues, and I think this fic is very clearly a form of therapy that I'd needed at the time. It is post canon, with Azula home and she and Zuko are in just about as good of standing as could be expected, but with a lot of issues between Azula and Ursa. It's Zuko's POV, as he navigates how he remembers his mother's parenting verses how Azula remembers it, and the complexity of it all. No romance, just the difficult dynamics of the Fire Siblings and their relationship with each other and their mother.

Love of the Loveless - unsurprisingly, Jetko. More surprisingly, it is NSFW. Not explicit, no actual smut in the fic, but explores Jet's unhealthy ideas about sex and coping mechanisms and his residual anger at the wealth of the Fire Nation in comparison to the poverty he experienced in the Earth Kingdom.

Do you respond to comments? I always love when an author responds when I leave comments on fics I read, so I try to pay the favor along.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably The Heart Shaped Glasses, a modern au oneshot centering around Jet, Smellerbee, and Longshot. Though, I likely have angstier endings in a bunch of fics I'd deleted

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I am allergic to unquestionably happy endings; I prefer ambiguous endings, ones that are open to interpretation. But....the happiest ending I can think of would maybe be Love of the Loveless or maybe In Your Seventh Heaven, a mostly canon compliant post Ba Sing Se Jet/Yue fic.

8. Do you get hate on fics? I think I have an angry comment on All You Wanted or Everything I Never Had for being critical of Ursa.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I have, but it's not very good, so I don't often. If I had to pick a kind, I guess character study disguised as porn.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I have not, and I don't think I have the creativity needed to do so.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?  Back under a different name, someone asked if they could, and I said yes. But before I ever found out if they did, I deleted that account and all my fics, and then understably never heard back from them.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Kind of? I've given feedback, and I've taken a lot of feedback while working on things. Had a lot of help on The Break in the Bend in particular.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? I don't have one. If you'd asked four years ago, it would have been Longerbee. Three years ago, it was Tyzula. Two years ago, JetLee. Last year and this year, Jetko. But I also latch onto crack ships real fast, churn out a fic for them, and then move onto the next.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? The Duke to Kanto. It is about how the life of the Duke, from joining the Freedom Fighters to where all the roads take him as a young adult, how he falls in love with Toph, and what happened to their relationship. I really love the first chapter of this fic, and would love to see it finished, but....the steam is gone. And it's hard to be motivated to keep going when there really isn't an audience for this niche fic.

16. What are your writing strengths? I've been told my ambiguous endings are well done, so I'm going to go with that.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Honestly, my confidence in my writing in general.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I'd feel more comfortable doing it if I was fluent in the other language, but I don't see why it would be a bad thing to do.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Xmen: Evolution.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Windows, a oneshot Maiko fic, that takes place in a single night after The Crossroads of Destiny, when Mai and Zuko finally reconnect after his banishment. There's a lot of flashbacks in it, chronicling pivotal moments in their relationship as children, and gets into the tricky situation that is Mai's friendship with Azula. It was my first fic I wrote during the pandemic, and I spent a lot of time really hammering out the details and making sure everything flowed and worked, and that the characterizations were accurate, and I think I largely succeeded.

uhm. characterization. dialogue. emotional shit? idk i think i do best when i have intimate moments with two people. tiny everyday moments and mundane shit. like that. if i get going writing sometimes flows super well and i think i can get consistently readable stuff done in one go. but that'd require getting going lol.

action. i suck at action. i also suck at it in the way that i can't actually make myself start writing. i got way too co-dependent when i still had people excitedly participating in the process and now i sit here sad doing nothing :'D but anyway. writing action and having some self-discipline lol.

depends very heavily on the context. in general i do think it should be all in one language for readability but there are exceptions. i've done it too lol but it was only like a line or two in finnish :'D

diru, twenty years ago lmao, it's like a different lifetime. i only learned of the existence of fanfic at the ripe old age of nineteen lol but yeah it's still been so long now.

3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

first four fics in the Long Story Short Series, and then It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags!

The first doesn't surprise me, just because those were the first stories I wrote so they've been up the longest. The second does.

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes. I love reading comments, and I always kind of feel like I'm having a conversation between the fic I wrote, and the comment, and then the response. It's nice.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

None? I honestly don't think anything I've written has an angsty ending.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

All of them? I'm not writing fic to depress my serotonin levels.

Not really. Or at least not yet. I've referenced 911 (OG) in a couple stories, but no real crossovers. There's one I kind of want to write where Carlos and Eddie knew each other from before, but I haven't figured out what the point of the story would be beyond - hey look they're both from Texas (and not even near each other in Texas)

I typically HATE crossover fics they just aren't my thing I do write AUs of X story set in X story's universe, just haven't published them (wait does that still count as a crossover).

I stare into the google docs hell and ask you how you could expect me to pick one but. BUT. Praeludium//Allegro. A piece meant to dive in how Sidestep is able to experience the moment someone dies through their mind.

Shorter pieces! They tend to be about ~2000-5000 words per part, that's usually when I feel I've done my best. I'm also. Decent at NSFW writing? Sometimes, at least.

Definitely long fics. I had a plan for freefall and have scrapped and adapted it multiple times now, pus it's just difficult to keep myself interested in specific but necessary chapters.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

It's fun! I've included Spanish and Russian excerpts into my fics before but I don't do it a lot. Considered writing fully in Spanish at some point for an Ortega POV but I'm not confident in my grammar abilities. Spanish verb tenses my beloathed.

Naruto. On a different old account best left to gather dust.

wait, so let me get this straight: jdream and jsam are an item. psam gets involved. jdream runs off w psam, jsam goes to jail. jdream/psam yuri ensues. jsam escapes. jdream gives up psam to jsam but convinces jsam to let psam live. they're all under house arrest together, and this is the point in the timeline where your fic takes place. have i got that right? birdhouse timeline dropping When

YEAH YEAH YEAH basically !!

for the timeline i'll give u uh the flowchart here, as well as a quick runthrough of what "path" in specifics plan threesome goes down (as well as a little update bc this flowchart is a little out of date now, it's missing some things. like plan threesome. lmao)

canon timeline happens (the c! universe) (~1 year)

jmah happens after c!sam (who becomes j!sam) time travels to day one of the prison (~1 year)

four square happens -- crossover event between jmah prisontrio and c!prisontrio shortly after inconsolable differences in the jmah!timeline (im so fucking sorry already for this mess) (~1 week, but happens 6 months after jmah daedalus)

mayfair immediately follows four square, and involves jmah dream + jmah sam being in a house together alone for a year. this is where their sexual relationship begins (~1 year)

mayfair+ starts when c!dream gets tped into the mayfair cottage. j!Sam builds a cell under the mayfair cottage. this goes on for a year as they acclimate to life together (~1 year)

mayfair+ff happens when sam + dream from kenjo's forced family AU get thrown in as well. ff!sam ends up being sexually involved in the jmah duo's deal shortly after he arrives, and c!dream eventually joins them. (~1 year)

birdhouse actually specifically refers to the umbrella of AUs that begin with coparent!sam being added to the mayfair cottage hell. this coparent!sam has already gone through the entirety of the coparent timeline, more or less, and has been going to therapy after p!dream left him shortly after they got married. he's pretty horrified by what's happening and his newfound ethical dream apologism gets tested against younger versions of him who are deadset on the whole "i am the warden thing." he quickly bonds with j!dream. (~9 months)

p!Dream gets thrown into the mayfair cottage ... sad. sorry for making u suffer king 😭. he's technically put under p!sam's supervision and the two of them have a complicated ass relationship as they try and work together to get themselves out of this mess. (~6 months)

about half a year after p!dream gets thrown in, we gave them XD certified magic babies. awesamdrabies timeline continues for a few years

when the kids are about 2, p!sam + p!dream (who have been in a weird on again off again relationship) have a blowout fight that ends with p!dream telling p!sam in no uncertain terms that it's over. j!dream, at the same time, is super depressed about the fact that j!sam doesn't actually love him. this results in them having an umm kinda sorta secret affair for a few months before j!dream freaks out one day and spills the whole thing to j!sam. this somehow ends with j!sam + j!dream getting together in an official relationship

a few months later, a series of unfortunate events leads to j!sam making a wish to "start over" with a new house with his son and j!dream, alone. this...goes poorly. j!dream falls into a deep depression and after a few months, runs away after a fight. in the conflict that results, he ends up reunited with the rest of the birdhouse crew (rescued specifically by p!sam) and j!sam ends up in jail. they go on the run together

when the kids are about 3-4, the coparents + j!dream + c!dream + the kids (faith + the triplets) roadtrip while j!sam is in jail. the coparents end up in a kinda sorta relationship again. j!Dream/c!Dream yuri is a staple since like literally four square but theyre traumatized so it's complicated. i'll make the birdhouse love diagram at some point. ummm because we said so p!sam and j!dream end up separated from all the others and have to make a life together on their own, and so they end up as. roommates. in a house . slash p

it doesn't stay slash p

j!sam ends up in jail for about a year and then tracks em for like, probably another 6 months to a year. j!dream/p!sam yuri happens and they've got like a somewhat functional relationship (#TRUST) but j!sam is also. tracking them down. anyway when j!dream sees him in town, he makes the executive decision to sell p!sam out to j!sam and reveal where they're living to him...and also lies. a lot. about the nature of their relationship for the last year. he knows that if j!sam knew the truth, he'd basically deeeefinitely kill p!sam immediately, and j!dream kinda wants that to. not happen. plan threesome refers to his um Desire for all three of them to coexist and fuck! that's been at the back of his mind for Awhile, so when j!sam is back he reacts by basically framing everything between him and p!sam being. well. a lot of manipulation + horrors where j!dream has been fucking with p!sam's head the whoooole time warden so you see p!sam is just a widdle victim and needs to be protected from the big bad dream

yeah his planning is still batshit. who wouldve thunk

I have 40k of a modern AU CarolMaria kdfic I started ages ago (last open rn is 2021 and it's older than that) and got stuck at the end bc I couldn't quite figure out the sequence of events. It has SO many scenes I love but I can never quite get back to it (the MCU's current storyline doesn't help either :/)

Another is a throwaway doc of a Monthy Python-style medieval comedy for TOG that I never sat down to brainstorm

15. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm good at creating visuals without needing suuuper lenghty detailed descriptions

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

I get too wordy and over-complicate my sentence structure, it's why I usually try to get a beta that has no issues tearing my writing apart to streamline it

I enjoy it! I routinely use different languages in my every day life so it feels natural to me. I think rendering everything to English can be flattening and strip characters of their richness sometimes, while I also understand there is a line between incorporating a character's cultural bg and making a caricature of it, so I try to get the right feedback before I hit post and I'm always open to talking it out.

Oh or Lupin (TV) cause I getting into Youssef's head when he's working with Assane promises to be so much fun, though it wouldn't be shippy

My current hyperfixation is The Untamed/Modao Zushi, but I write for whatever. I've got a lot of one shots for properties I think are neat like Welcome to Nightvale or Parks and Rec.

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

A Passion for Mushrooms, Mountain Flowers, The Seedling, Family's Just Another Word for Something Left To Lose, and In Town for the Wedding. Four in Hobbit/LotR fandom and one Naruto.

5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?

I really try to. I appreciate feedback so much. When I'm in a funk it really brightens my mood, so I want to respond and build community with readers not just drop a story. And sometimes I go months without checking my inbox which makes me feel awkward about replying. It's a mix.

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Interestingly, Family's Just Another Word For Something Left To Lose, according to some readers. It's ambiguous at the end and *a lot* of people think Kakashi dies, which is not at all my intent. I was paralleling the same scene with Iruka in the anime, and Iruka survives. It did not occur to me that the ambiguity would be what so many people took away.

The one I wrote that's intentionally angsty at the end is all i hear is your gear, which has no happy intentions and is all just about Crowley being a demon in hell.

7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

So much of my stuff is romance with a traditional HEA ending, but weirdly the ending I like most is A Spy in the Shire. It's a happy ending for this one oc dwarf, but in the broader context of the series I think it both emphasizes the Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies AU happiness as well as justifying the many sacrifices made in canon.

8. do you get hate on any fics?

yeah for sure. And I am sensitive about it. If it hits me when I'm already feeling low, I usually have to stay away from fandom spaces for a while and I often lose the motivation to write at all. It sucks. Some of it I can brush off more easily, like the Iruka/Kakashi shippers who come onto my fic to make fun of the way Mighty Guy looks and try to pick a fight. They are likely children and I just don't engage. But the people who criticize my writing or a specific story for reasons they are happy to detail can be harder to ignore.

This is of course a very different thing than the helpful folks who point out that I've once again mixed up desert and dessert. Y'all are lovely and I appreciate the help.

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

Yes, as the mood strikes. ...the kind I'm in the mood for? Almost always romantic stuff between a major pairing.

10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Listen. Ron Swanson and Wolverine would be very good friends, actually. My Parks and Rec / X-men crossover is not crazy.

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge.

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! One of my Naruto fics is available in Chinese and two of my Modao Zushi stories can be read in Russian. As I speak neither language, I can only assume the translators did an awesome job of making my writing smarter, funnier, and sexier than it is in English.

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but I find the idea of collaborating interesting.

14. what’s your all time favorite ship?

This is not how my brain works. I pretty much constantly have a Current Obsession and then pairings I still enjoy. Right now, Wangxian invented love, but I'll always enjoy revisiting a certain romance involving Mister Spock or the Leverage Pretzels and Beer OT3.

15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I desperately want to finish my Zombie Criminal Minds series, particularly because being able to revisit it will mark the end of my pandemic / outbreak related brain gremlins.

I'd like to do more with humor. I feel like I frequently manage to provoke a sensible chuckle, but I've read fics that make me crack up. Someday, I'd like to write a really Terry Pratchett style laugh-a-minute story.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Sometimes you gotta do it, because it's in keeping with the canon, but it's always best to do sparingly. If it's longer than a greeting or an honorific, I like to translate directly within the narrative or use a footnote.

Slayers. Yes, I was that anime kid in high school.

20. favorite fic you’ve written?

My favorite child? Well, I've never really cared for Pit Stop...

I suppose, back against a wall, I enjoy the world building in None So Blind. We just don't spend enough time in dwarven spaces that aren't complete ruins in the canon. Coupled with thoughts on fantasy accessibility and the classic trope of tripping a romantic lead into a pile of literal pig shit, I just like it. Good work, 2018!me.

Yes! I try to respond to every single comment! They took the time to give me a comment, why wouldn't I take the time to thank them for it?

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

That's tough, because I always try to give hellcheer a happy ending - they deserve it! But Release My Inner Fantasy, despite being almost purely smut, definitely has the angstiest ending. (although it might be slightly cheating since it is part of an ongoing series, and I do intend to give them an eventual happy ending)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Again, I love to write happy endings! So most of my fics are very happy at the close. But Hooked on a Feeling might be my most sappy-sweet ending. It's definitely one of my more lighthearted fics!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

honestly, no! the hellcheer fandom overall has been very kind to me. the closest I get to hate on fics is people wishing/asking me to do something different than I've already done (i.e. write an alternate ending because they didn't want A or B in it), which can be very discouraging. but I don't get that a lot!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do! However, I had never written actual smut in my life until this year, so I'm still pretty new at it

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Not really. The closest I've ever gotten to a crossover is crossover elements loosely integrated in a fic. Devil in the Woods, for example, uses bits and pieces from things like little red riding hood and beauty and the beast while remaining very much its own thing!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of! And I'd very much like to keep it that way

i don't think so! but i'd be honored if somebody did

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I haven't, but I have a lovely friend who betas for me on occasion and we bounce ideas back and forth so much it sometimes feels like cowriting ( @slumped-in-the-arms-of-fiction )

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I intend to finish every single wip I have going atm (As well as a few on the back burner lol). but sometimes it feels like i'm never going to finish them, especially when i'm on the very last chapters. why does it always work like that???

16. What are your writing strengths?

I feel like i'm pretty good at writing intimate scenes. and by that i mean scenes where not a lot's going on, where a small group of characters (usually two) can be together or have a conversation that doesn't do much for the plot but sheds a lot of light on the characters themselves (both to the readers and within the story between characters)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I'm very undisciplined with writing habits, i don't write every day or have certain goals. i struggle to describe people and scenery in a concrete way that is integrative with the story itself.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

find a native speaker and get (and listen to) their feedback. whether it's tenses, phrases, or cultural tendencies, let someone who's actually the expert be the expert.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

hellcheer! unless you count me scribbling in my journal when i was about eight, writing a boxcar children story because i'd heard that they employed ghost writers and i thought "i could do that!" i wrote like half a dozen sentences, convinced i was going to become employed by the boxcar children publisher.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

honestly? probably Devil in the Woods. it's the one i go back to the most when i need a comfort read.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Any of my fluffy fics? Maybe Lavmione in Lavender for Morning or Nottpott in Silver Surprise.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not yet (*crosses fingers*). I've had some mildly annoying comments (like saying how they disliked background Dramione in a Drarry fic I wrote), but nothing to make me wanna bash my head against the wall.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Umm... yes. I am currently in the middle of posting the smuttiest, most depraved series I have ever written for this year's Kinktober.... so check it out ig?

Not so much crossovers but heavily inspired by other stories. I wrote Dronarry in a Sandman AU and also Hermione/Daphne in a Twilight AU 😂

Yes! My Nottpott fic was translated into Russian. How cool is that??

I have done art collabs but never co-written a fic. Definitely something I'd love to try. Maybe it'll happen next year!

Idk there's too many to choose!! I probably read Drarry the most, but I think that's mostly because there's just SO MANY amazing Drarry authors. I can honestly be convinced to like any ship if I like the writing style and the story. I'm a huge rare pair and femslash shipper!!! The communities are just so wonderful 💖

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Never say never! But I'm really lacking motivation to finish my Squid Games AU Drarry fic. I love the concept, but the plot is just not flowing.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Emotion. I like my fics to pack a punch. I think I'm getting pretty good at it.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Longfic. It's hard for me to sustain motivation for one idea. I have too many running through my brain at once, and I always get distracted by the shiny new headcanon.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've seen it. I've done it. I'm ambivalent, mostly. I think it can be a great way to show cultural differences between characters. But I also think 90% of the time it unnecessarily confuses the reader because if you don't know the language, you're just going to skip over the dialogue. And if you do know the language, then you'll notice if it doesn't sound natural. Yeah... not a fan when it's just google translated and copy-pasted.

Artist Rules and Information

Key artist dates:

Artist submissions open: October 3, 2023

Artist submissions close: November 6, 2023

Claims: TBD (around November 15)

Early submission deadline: February 1, 2024

Final deadline: February 11, 2024

This challenge doesn't have traditional signups for artists. Instead, anyone wanting to participate as an artist must submit a finished piece by November 6, 2023. All finished pieces will be put up for claims about a week later.

Art can be digital or traditional, but it should be complete and polished. You can use your best judgment as to what that means, because different kinds of art demand different things. A beautiful, detailed sketch may be finished as is, or sketch lines could indicate a piece still needs cleanup. If there is a problem, you'll be notified as soon as possible. 

The most important rules: 

No dialogue. Sound effects and other text are fine, but characters speaking is not.

You must create a preview/teaser image/crop of your piece of no less than 200x200px and no more than 300x300px for claims. If your art is sexually explicit or graphically violent, your preview must be SFW. 

No sexual or sexualized depictions of minors. 

Do not post the work publicly before the story is posted. 

When your art is done, send it and your preview to sabinelagrande@gmail.com, with the subject "Oxventure Reverse Bang". Please include the following:

Tumblr and/or AO3 username

Series or one-shot (D&D, Blades in the Dark, Deadlands)

Do you want to opt out of explicit fic? 

Are you under 18?

At claims, authors will be presented with all the work produced for the challenge on a ranked choice ballot, and the mod will make selections based on it. You will not be told who voted for you or how they ranked you, only the artist who received your art. Authors will only see your preview at claims, without your name attached.

Minors will only be matched with writers willing to write G or T rated work. If you do not want NSFW fic about your piece, you must tell the mod at submission. If you don't notify the mod before claims, your author is not required to create a SFW fic.

All artists will be claimed before any duplication happens. If you submit more than one piece of art and art outnumbers the authors, you may be asked to choose one.

Your author may want to talk to you about your piece and your ideas, or they may not! Remember that the author has the final approval on the words and does not have to make something you like. 

You may excerpt relevant passages from the story about your art, but you cannot repost the story without the author's permission. 

These are guidelines, not rules, but they can be useful as a place to start:

Avoid drawing canon events as is. This can box the writer in and give them fewer possibilities. 

Get weird if you want to be weird. Go AU. Crossovers should stay between Oxventure series, but feel free to drop them in a blender. 

Don't restrict yourself to creating one traditional image of a full scene. You might instead illustrate a detail, like a tattoo, a hand, a wanted poster, etc. On the other hand, you can also draw multiple vignettes or a wordless comic. 

The right writer will be into your piece. Someone is desperate to write Deadlands in space. Someone dearly wants to construct a whole story around a picture of someone holding a letter. Do what you want and the writer will come.
