I am losing my goddamn mind but in a way that is enitirely specific to me.

Many, many years ago, I watched a Buffy fan edit on YouTube, set to a song I had never heard before. It turned out to be “Once” by Bradley Caleb Kane, a song which did not at the time exist on Apple Music or Spotify. I listened to it on YouTube for several years because I really loved this song. I couldn’t figure out why this artist didn’t seem to exist. This elusive Brad Caleb Kane was not even a musician with songs on any major streaming platforms.

Several months ago, I went on Spotify and on a whim decided to search for the song Once. Behold! It now existed. I excitedly added it to my playlists and proudly became one of Brad Caleb Kane’s 399 monthly Spotify listeners.

I naively thought this was the end of my journey. 20 minutes ago, I was scrolling through Black Sails tumblr and saw someone talking about episode xi. WRITTEN BY BRAD KANE. I thought I knew that the two lead writers/producers on the show were Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine. Surely I hadn’t missed the name of one of the major people behind the creation of the show I loved? Especially someone whose name I recognized? No such luck. Brad Caleb Kane was a producer on all 38 episodes. He wrote 7 of them.

I go on this man’s Wikipedia. He was IN BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. He played Tucker Wells, Andrew’s brother (ha!), in the episode The Prom and also voiced Jonathan’s song in Superstar.

My experience with this man has come full circle. I discovered his existence through Buffy (but not the fact that he was literally ON IT), only to detour through his apparently very minor music career and my SECOND FAVORITE SHOW (behind only Buffy): Black Sails. This is serendipity or something.

Long story short, I think I’m unwittingly Brad Caleb Kane’s biggest fan. I have somehow followed his multiple careers as an actor, musician, producer, and writer all without knowing it and loved all of the content I have been fed. This is now a Brad Caleb Kane stan account.

Right I’m having a rant bc it’s the middle of the night and I can’t sleep and I’m pissed off.

So basically my mate started dating this girl a few years ago and the whole relationship (abt 2 years) she was v jealous of me and his ‘relationship’ she spent the whole time accusing me of trying to steal him away. Now she knew i like girls, me and him were basically siblings, we have been friends since we were like 8 etc etc.

So this was neither here nor there when we were in high school. She’d just come and sit between us at lunch n shit. But at our high school prom she started acting v childish and strange. She wouldn’t let us get a photo together. Wouldn’t let him sit at the table with our friend group, any time I tried to talk to him she’d come over and start kissing him and wouldn’t let him drink at all. Which all pissed me off but whatever.

Now about a month after they both moved away for uni (to the same city) he came home to help me out with a project and we decided to go to the pub after. She saw this on my story and called him bawling her eyes out saying he was clearly off sleeping with me, so I took his phone and told her to grow the fuck up and hung up. Later that night I posted on my story a video of me and him drunk in the train station singing theatre songs (we done drama together) and she snapped me going ballistic saying I was singing love songs to him (Gaston from beauty and the beast) then blocked me on all socials.

Anyway they broke up like a month later bc he realised she was being super manipulative etc and I’ve not heard from her since. But she anyway she must have a burner account bc my friends started sending me ss of her posts a while back saying she looked to be copying me a bit. (For contest she’s a v femme K-pop stan, MUA, long blonde hair, lives in dresses type girl. And I’m a more androgynous metal/rock type person with short split dye hair who lives in band T’s n cargos)

So it started off a bit strange but I didn’t question it, she started wearing maiden and Metallica tops while admitting she doesn’t like the bands. Then she started copying my hobbies and always posting like 10mins after me. But tonight it’s gone a bit too far, I posted a selfie of me in graphic liner and eye shadow that matched my split dye (red and very dark, almost black, purple) with a maiden top and the caption “headache hours”. And who’d guess it, an hour later a picture of her with the exact same makeup, colours n all, a Metallica top and the caption “my head hurts”.

Idk what to do at this point. It’s obvious she still thinks he likes me and is trying to win him back but he has no interest and if I say anything to her she’ll know our mutual friends have been showing me her posts. But it’s getting a bit fucking creepy now.

fun facts about high school me

i was very obsessed with edie sedgwick. i didn't fuck with andy warhol but i loved her and dressed like her once for a costume party.

i also dressed as a jackson pollock painting for halloween

other fixations i had: sylvia plath, kurt vonnegut, beat happening, jack kerouac and that era of literature, the velvet underground and everything about that scene minus andy warhol, the perks of being a wallflower (lol)

my life goal was to either be like ernest hemingway (write, travel a lot) or carrie bradshaw (write, live in a big city)

i had a pop punk / hardcore phase, but tumblr ruined that for me (thank god)

i didn't go to prom because i was too anti establishment to do something like that and also prom is expensive!!

i did tech for my school's theatre department and i hated it so much lmao

i was the editor in chief for my school's newspaper. that was much better than theatre imo

(not so fun fact) some guy two years older than me became very obsessed with me and then hated me 1. bc i did not like him back 2. he treated me like a manic pixie dream girl and then got upset when i was a normal teenage girl and 3. he thought i knew he plagiarized a story he wrote from an anime (i did not know for the record) so he tried to ruin my life for years. the only reason it stopped was because i got too old for him to care about.

i didn't date for most of high school bc i just didn't like most of the people i knew then. i did have what we would now call orbiters online, mostly on my old tumblr account.

i did okay at school. i was bad at math and science, but good at everything else.

i had kind of basic taste in tv shows. i loved how i met your mother and glee (one of the first fandoms i used tumblr for lol)

i avidly used last.fm which played a big role in me getting my first boyfriend

i wanted to be a redhead so bad and dyed my hair red for most of my high school years

i used to meet people off tumblr all the time and it was not a big deal because it was just other teenagers

a lot of my friends were very into this local band who went through a few different phases and they're now a famousish band. i don't like their music tbh but they were always nice guys. they performed at my friend's 16th birthday party and i once found photos from that party floating around on tumblr and it was surreal.

i got in a very big fight with my senior english teacher because she said ayn rand and her books were not political and i was like wtf are you talking about

i unfortunately got covid so i had to miss my graduation 😭 i completely recovered now but i was rly bummed out for a couple of days, esp on the day of. i retraced my days and figured out by timelines that i contracted it on my last day of school and thats so 💀 one of my friends said the school left me a parting gift 👹 apparently some people with covid went to grad anyways but i didnt want to be one of those people even though i rly rly wanted to go anyways

my clubbed performed a dance! i also had a short solo towards the end and it was jusy rly fun so at least there's that good memory left from my school ig ansjdffkv hehe thank you for the virtual flowers 💓

"I just want to talk."

"About?" You asked, crossing your arms.

"About you. How are you? Are you finally satisfied that you have someone who treats you better?" Tom asked. You stared at Tom with a confused and offended look. You let out a scoff before shaking your head at him.

"Yeah, you always say I'm never satisfied, but I don't think that's true. You say I'm never satisfied, but that's not me, it's you. Cause all I ever wanted was to be enough. But I don't think anything could ever be enough for you," you tell Tom. Tom stared at you with regret in his eyes. You were right. He should've treated you better than he did before. He should've appreciated you but now you were with someone new and happy.

"Y/n," Tom turned around to see Andrew walking over to you. You smiled softly at Andrew as he wrapped an arm around your waist.

"Hey. What's up?"

"I was wondering if you'd like to leave a little early. I wanted to show you something before the night ends," Andrew tells you.

"Okay. I'm pretty much ready to leave. Bye, Tom," you say before walking out with Andrew.

"Later, mate. I'll see you later," Andrew tells Tom.

"Yeah. See you guys later," Tom said as he watched the two of you walk out together.

Reader’s Corner: A Sign of Affection, Dragon and Ceremony, and My Next Life as a Villainess Side Story

My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong, As I Expected @ comic, Vol. 17

The final arc of Oregairu (this is the 17th of 19 manga volumes) shifts heavily toward the dramatic, immediately evident ipn the cover which makes Hachiman, commonly memified as Batman-like hero, 8-man (“Hachi-man”), look like he’s in an action manga, while Yukino and Yui look on sorrowfully. Yes, it’s a bit overdramatic, but so, too, is the material from the light novels upon which this manga is based. I’ve been critical of the too-long, overserious final arc of what’s otherwise a remarkably witty and wonderfully thoughtful series. But the manga takes a slightly and surprisingly different beat. Volume 17, in which little happens on the surface (Yukino continues to struggle with impending cancellation of the prom while Hachiman wonders whether or not he should help) but where all the main characters are hitting the climax of their feelings and considering how to move forward, is a satisfying and lovely read. And it’s all because of the mangaka. As all works are apt to do, My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong, As I Expected @ comic has developed over time, from the rougher artwork and writing trying to find a voice early on to a beautifully developed piece that now stands on its own, as Ponkan⑧ and Naomichi use the strengths available in manga format to take light novel writer Wataru Watari’s wordiness (both his greatest strength and weakness) and make emphasis where necessary, using panels drawn as metaphors to explain or break up confusing and long passages, and incredible artwork every few pages (ex. a shot of Yui in the future as a housewife) to do the same. They also avoid having the heavy drama overwhelm the general tone of the story by including cutesy, kawaii, and romantic panels, creating a nice balance to an arc that is and needs to be dramatic, but not overly so. I should also note that even though I can’t describe myself as a Yui stan, I’m happy to see the opportunity she receives to shine in these chapters, most surprisingly through Haruno’s perfect description of her character, a nice moment in the midst of emotional chaos. And there’s no doubt, chaos is the center of this volume, an untangling of complex emotions by teenagers who are struggling to do so, and if that sounds rather dull, well, in Ponkan⑧ and Naomichi’s hands, it’s not—it’s thrilling. I cannot wait to see how these two conclude this masterful series in the final two volumes. ~ Twwk

Visions 2021 Illustrators Book

You may follow artists who illustrate in anime-style art on Instagram, Twitter, or deviantArt, but are you familiar with Pixiv? The Japanese site has exploded in recent years, and mostly feature Asian artists who illustrate in styles familiar to anime fans. The Visions 2021 book captures the art of many of Pixiv’s most notable artists, including Lack, Kawacy, and 江戸屋犬八, with each receiving a two-page spread in this several hundred-page artbook in which almost every single piece that is featured (mostly somewhere between 3-7 per artist) is breathtaking, worthy of examination and admiration. I’ve long held an account at Pixiv and frequently talk to artists about featuring their work here on our blog and on other sites, and so am absolutely thrilled to see many of their original works (there are very few fanart pieces in Visions 2021—I saw just one, in fact, for Spice and Wolf) in a physical copy. Landscapes, especially, sparkle in a way they don’t on a digital screen. Fans of Pixiv will also be excited to see the caption material for artists, which include profiles and both English and Japanese (or Chinese or Korean) translations of their names. The profiles also often explain their what kind of work they do, with some having reached the heights of the industry, including two of our favorites, Loundraw and Yoshitoshi ABe, and Ponkan⑧, who we praised in the review above. Those unfamiliar with Pixiv will marvel at how insanely detailed and powerful these illustrations of mainly anime girls can be, and how they run a gamut of different styles and genres, made all the more evident by a lack of thematic order (pages are ordered alphabetically by artist name). There is some gore, body horror, and fanservice, but the works aren’t explicit, and veer toward what I might describe as “tasteful ecchi,” if there is such a thing. ~ Twwk

A Sign of Affection, Vol. 4

The next volume of A Sign of Affection is here and it is precious as always! This continues to be a manga that doesn’t languish on my stacks; I start it shortly after it arrives because I love it so much. This trend continues as I was already squealing within the first few pages! While Yuki continues to be amazing and sweet as ever, Itsuomi really shines in this volume. He’s more relaxed then ever before. Yuki really sees him in his element and much of what takes place in this volume reminds me of a certain scene from Kimi ni Todoke when Kazehaya tells Sawako he wants to “feel his future” with her. I don’t know if that is what Itsuomi is thinking or not (because yeah, I agree with Yuki that he is still a mystery), but gosh, I love how he is just so respectful of Yuki! And his thoughtfulness! Both him and Kyouya bring the swoon-worthy vibes! There’s lots and lots of wholesomeness in this volume and with an ending that had a good turn of events. I’m not sure if I would say there’s a plot twist, as well, but now I am super curious to know what will happen next because I wasn’t expecting that! 5 out of 5 stars, and as always, a desperation for the next volume! ~ Laura A. My Next Life as a Villainess Side Story: On the Verge of Doom!, Vol. 1

This spinoff manga of the My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! light novel series asks a fun what-if question: What if Katarina didn’t regain memories of her past life—and thus the knowledge of Fortune Lover and her impending doom—until she was already in the academy? This presents quite a few problems for her: Not only does she have to somehow reverse all the bullying against protagonist Maria that she had started (while everyone around is confused why her personality changed so much), but she now also only has one year before her supposed Bad Ends! This is a very enjoyable spinoff that twists the story just enough to make some interesting changes. For example, one of game!Katarina’s lackeys becomes a significant character as Katarina tries to convince her to stop bullying Maria. At the same time, this spinoff works because Katarina is still her same ditzy self, and her bumbling around to find ways to prepare for her Bad Ends are both familiar and just different enough to still be funny. Much of the original main cast is also here, though it is worth noting that here, they have not been influenced by a younger reincarnated Katarina, which again provides all sorts of interesting differences and similarities as Katarina interacts with them. Overall, this was a really fun spinoff and one I definitely recommend for Bakarina fans, although it’s best to be familiar with the original series (whether through the light novel, manga, or anime) to get the most out of it. ~ stardf29

Dragon and Ceremony, Vol. 1

Wandmaking apprentice Ix is at a crossroads, figuratively and literally—his master has died, he lacks the credentials to become a full-fledged craftsman on his own, and stand at the road, unsure where to go. There he meets Yuui, a young woman hiding beneath a hood who approaches him with a wand in need of repair. Their serendipitous meeting sets off an unexpected journey which by the end of volume one of Dragon and Ceremony leads to most satisfying and beautiful conclusion. This is a well-written novel. Though it relies on a very standard fantasy setting and wandmaking conventions that will be familiar to Harry Potter fans, there’s a subtlety and strength in how author Ichimei Tsukushi guides the story. He mixes humor, mystery, and fantastical elements, but the main object for us as readers is to enjoy the dual leads as we get to know them and see how they grow over the course of the novel. Tsukushi also makes wonderful use of religion in his story. Too often presented as an almost comical villain in other similar series, without much depth, here religion is presented more broadly and deeply, and it plays a significant role in the wondrous conclusion to the tale. Speaking of the ending, volume one concludes in such a way that readers will long for more, to see in what direction this story will develop. It feels a lot like the early volumes of Spice and Wolf in that the series feels as if it can go in a variety of directions, and that its main characters could come together or stay apart, which adds to the magic of an already magical volume. I, for one, am entranced. ~ Twwk

Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki, Vol. 4

I’ve been addicted to Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki lately, finding the series about the titular nerd receiving to become a normie to be highly engaging and surprising in the best of ways. Volume four, however, is a slight step back from the heights of volume three, which ended with Hinami being challenged for the first time for her world view, the way she approaches life, and just generally in how she treats others. In this follow-up, Tomozaki is now given what amounts to a volume-long assignment of trying to get the horrible, terrible, no-good Konno to actually want to participate in the upcoming school sports festival. I like how this volume, more than previous ones, feels very video game-like, not just by the constant analogies made, but by how the author structures the plot to make it feel as if Tomozaki is in an RPG and planning to fight a tough boss. However, some of the flaws of the series are getting tiring by this point, including a complaint I have about many shonen / harem works: The MC is a character whom we’re supposed to like and buy into, even though he’s actually leading several girls on (but it’s okay because he has no idea they like him!). Tomozaki as narrator is far too smart to not realize, or simply take the time to think about, whether Fuuka (and may others?) likes him. Also, the turn that happens near the end of volume four, a veering toward the importance of another character in volume five, feels a bit forced and isn’t terribly compelling (at least not yet). Still, for all its flaws, I finished the book in about two days. I remain addicted, and imagine I’ll stay that way unless the low points grow more prominent than the engaging remaining elements of the series. ~ Twwk

The enhanced one supposedly used his powers without permition AND to harm someone, to KILL someone, so he is going to be arested at the Raft without a trial. There will be no investigation, there will be no need of evidences, so no one will ever find it was his son, and not the poor enhanced boy that is now locked at the Raft having to use a straightjacket, that killed that person.

Does that sounds fair for you? It doesn't for me.

SO basically i feel like she finally moved back to irving little over a yr ago. she hd a brief stint starring on a reality tv show tht filmed in one of the larger beach houses where her dog gained a handful of fan accounts dedicated to him……. u maybe will see why in the first bullet point of her personality section………… FKGHKSHFGGKFSHKHG. honestly she ws received pretty well too (mostly bc she’s so fking dramatic n like a caricature of a person) bt it wasn’t anything to warrant actual Fame (despite what willa herself might think). she’s mostly jst like. chilling honestly. accepting scripts n flying out fr auditions still. she’ll nab the occasional part bt she’s looking for that One Thing that rly feels like her big moment….. otherwise i cn just imagine her treating irving like a little dollhouse compared to the roaring mansion of NYC n having fun playing around in it. strikes a pose w a hand on my hip…. and now to personality.

PERSONALITY:

got a very large n lithe greyhound n named him marlene dietrich bc she was a black n white hollywood starlet famously known for her affairs n “bedroom eyes”. willa was like ugh. icon status instantly. didn’t rly foresee the responsibilities tht came w owning a dog tht loves exercise n complains abt him being like “ugh he wants to run soooooooooo much 🙄 like where are u literally going”. having said tht loves him dearly n he can often be seen wearing little clothes. a baby’s bonnet. a quilted leather waistcoat. a custom dog boa. he’s very glamorous. willa calls him a gay icon despite no evidence to support this theory. she also says he can sniff out evil in ppl so she brings him sometimes when she’s first introduced to a friend’s new bf n if his nose quivers a certain way she’s like “marlene has spoken. it’s done”. her friends r like omg? what’s done? willa gets up n walks away without elaborating. marlene’s little paws clicking along the floor w attitude.

literally dressed as marie antoinette for her high skl prom even tho there was no theme pertaining to this. jst loves the spotlight. can fake cry and WILL to get out of a parking ticket or teach someone to watch their tone or even simply for the theatrics of it all. the Most dramatic………….. rly fits being an actress like when people find out what she does it’s very like oh that makes sense.

says she doesn’t get hangovers. she’s just like “i revoked that it doesn’t happen to me”. alludes tht this is bc she’s an all powerful deity that was Chosen to be Blessed bt really she’s jst great at bouncing back n acting fine even w a blistering headache. it’s about believing the performance so much that u even convince urself.

probably an incredibly big fan of dramatic short lived love affairs. she wants the glamour of it all. the scandal. the randomly breaking up w someone in a public place n sliding on sunglasses after delivering the words over a freshly ordered coffee (tht she’ll leave without drinking bc that’s star power babey she waits fr no man or no hot beverage)…….. has no preference gets w any n all regardless of gender……… romanticises things so they hv a better spin or story in her head n doesn’t rly take things seriously like jst has fun in her fantasy world…. she’s like ugh chuck i know u wanted to marry me but i’m a beautiful bird in a cage n u literally need to undo the latch n set me free……. the guy’s like……. my name’s chase n we’ve only been on two dates….. willa’s like…… please don’t take this so hard i can tell ur besides urself but people r starting to stare……. gets up n leaves. no-one was staring. chase is confused n honestly probably semi concerned fr her welfare.

always has to b the hottest n most glamorous person in a grocery store…. probably goes to them when she doesn’t even need anything jst holding a basket nonchalantly over her forearm glancing over at a cashier in her wizard of oz corset seamed interpretation on a dorothy dress thinking he wants me soooo bad it’s not even funny….. seduces him over the check out counter jst for him to ask her to come back to his so she can lean back scandalised n cry “IS THAT THE KIND OF WOMAN U THINK I AM, PAUL?! YOU’RE A GHASTLY LITTLE MAN, YOU ARE….” with all the gusto of a telenovela. attracts the shocked glances of all surrounding elderly.

speaks fluent french. probably on her brief stint on tht reality show i mentioned earlier was like “ugh can you believe Deneurve of this guy?” n in her head was like this catchphrase is sensational it’ll catch on fast the twittersphere is abt to implode but it didn’t become a thing except for in a small isolated community. despite this she’s like “yeah it went viral….. go figure. just another day in the life.”

honestly like a lot of fun bt also a huge handful at the same time. keeps her real Serious emotions in a locked box bt is always overflowing w melodramatics n rly giving her all at the drop of a hat where Performing is concerned. probably Loves parties n sees them as another form of production in which she wants to b the lead. rly just. loves herself. except does she? 🤔 lifts my hand up like rihanna n winks. find out next time. lucky by britney plays as i slowly disintegrate in spiderman rp…..

unrequited flame: willa burns thru people like matches. bright n fast. honestly i feel like she struggles to take romance seriously so it cld be fun to play around with someone who’s been singed by that in the past…. mayb they hd actual feelings whereas willa was just messing around n having fun…. living la vida loca so to speak…….. we can discuss a time frame or specifics to expand upon this but. sexy angst perhaps.

childhood sweetheart: i think it cld be rly cute n sad if there was someone that kind of echoed the dynamic her mum n dad had except she was the celeste n they were the marlon…. (open to any gender)…….. so like. willa was always very larger than life commanding attention in a room n they were more to the sidelines but they just kind of got each other n brought out the best in one another. added angst to the fact tht willa wld maybe want to avoid them as much as possible now bc it dredges up feelings she doesn’t want to confront where her parents r concerned n also in a way any possibility of them winding up together feels like sellotaping an expiration date to both of their foreheads in willa’s brain

1. Do you like Ferrero Rocher chocolate? Yes. I mean it’s not the best-tasting chocolate out there but for some reason I also can’t stop having them once I’ve started? Hahaha. Pretty expensive though and I wouldn’t typically buy a pack for myself.

Closing 2020

When lockdown started on March 24, I remember all too well breaking down in tears. It was the last day of year 11 and I knew I wasn’t going to be seeing most of my friends ever again. It was also my cousin’s and one of my friend’s birthday too. It felt mean; I wasn’t going to experience prom, or feel that sense of relief of finishing my GCSEs.

Unlike a lot of people I know, I’m a homebody, and I thrive in the comfort of my own home.

And lockdown gave me an opportunity to focus on my writing. And I found the chat bot community too (which accounts I run are not being said lol. ifykyk). I found people I connected with, and definitely close friends. I want to say a little something to everyone, so forgive my sappiness for a moment. If I miss anyone, now I love you all so much. You’ve all made 2020 so memorable, for all the right reasons.
