Audio Drama Sunday - 13th August ✨

Happy #AudioDramaSunday, lovely people! I’ve listened to so much audio drama this week and my house is so clean as a result 🫧 

SPOILERS BELOW!

🌲@hellofromthehallowoods Starcrossed Gods!! I felt so brave daring to listen to this again. My heart 💔 Marolmar is written so well! Every sentence contains something to flinch at, it makes me sick to hear it all again. I’d also repressed the memory of how gut-wrenching Nikignik’s shouting at the end was, and how much it hurts to hear people trying to sing with a closed up throat. ANYWAY, I’m fine, thank you for asking. I’m not sure if the live show was released early due to logistical reasons, but I am fearful that it’s to provide context for what’s about to happen in the regular episodes (AKA tears and tears and tears for me). 

🦀 What an absolute delight to hear from the @thesiltverses cast again! These season recaps are so funny and it’s so heart warming to hear it when the cast of a show are clearly also its biggest fans. I’m SO excited for S3!!

🦮 @malevolentcast (34) what an episode!! If I recall correctly, this is the first time we’ve had an episode entirely without Arthur & John’s perspective? The Butcher is a worthy character to hold that mantle. Do I feel like I understand him more? No. Did I love being along for the ride? Absolutely. It’s also so weird to hear Arthur talking to John out loud when he thinks no-one can hear. I hope he makes it out in time! 

📻 @monstrousagonies (107) So thrilled to have this show back and I hope Hero is feeling much better! The first letter was so cute!! I’m sure there are lots of us who can relate to choosing love and kindness when we’re used to the opposite! Whichever bridge that little one finds, I’m sure it’ll be the loveliest by far!! 

🌒 @monkeymanproductions gave us the low-down on just how incredibly talented the Moonbase Theta, Out cast are in their Cast Special. Spoiler: Very. It was very wholesome to hear DJ Sylvis hyping everyone up and the episode is full of great AD and other recommendations! 

🎙Welcome to Night Vale is back!! I felt particularly targeted by the ad copy in this episode, but I’m sure that was their intention! This ep’s weather was particularly up my street too! I loved the harmonies! 

🎞 Tiny Terrors OOF hey so I found out what was up with Angela… and I didn’t like it one bit! I also need to know what the hell was happening at the end there. Jess, girl, you’ve got to stop getting yourself in these situations. It’s too much (for me to listen to)! 

🌍 @lastechoespod (8) I can’t believe it’s the last episode! Ishani Kanetkar was wonderful as Trast. I wish we could hear the final decision, but I guess I’ll just have to relisten and try decide for myself . . . 

🧛‍♂️ @re-dracula Uhoh, someone’s arrived in Whitby . . . I love Mina so much and Isabel AdomakohYoung is doing amazing job as her VA. She captures the good-hearted intelligence I love so much about the character!

 💫 Wolf 359 (38-46 + Special!) Oh MAN this podcast has my entire heart. Isn’t Memoria one of the best episodes of anything ever? Oh, Hera, I love you sooo much!!!!! I also loved the Lovelace cliffhanger at the end of 46 and the special was so different but so good! (Although listening to 2 hours of anything is a challenge!! I need a 20-30 min ep or I can’t fit it into my life) 

🎩 @ethicstownpod (7) OH MY GOD. January fans are looking a little bit bloody silly right now! What. The. Hell. Is. Going. On???? Please, if you haven’t yet started listening to this show, now is your time! It’s SO good and has so many twists and turns!!

Looking Back On: My Chemical Romance, “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys”

“Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys” is next to be discussed. I should start this section by apologizing for breaking the Clarion’s “no more articles about My Chemical Romance” rule. It wasn’t going to survive with me around. I’ve written here before about how my friend Mag really dragged me into the emo scene in 2011. 

“Danger Days,” my MCR album of choice, simply must be included in this article. First and foremost, “Danger Days” and the podcast “Welcome To Night Vale” are the two major things that inspired me to be a radio DJ throughout high school. That choice has impacted my life in so many ways that it’s not even funny. The album is amazing; comic books, apocalypse and anti-capitalism fit so well together. 

I won’t focus on the comics as they take place 10 years after the album. Dr. Death-Defying’s intro in “Na Na Na” is hands down the best intro to an album ever. It accomplishes more world-building and tone-setting than most full books in just a few sentences. 

The song blasts us into the world of the Killjoys (the rebels fighting for freedom in the story, who are personified as the band members) so well. It sets the immediate goal of saving The Girl from the evil Korse who kidnaps her at the end of the song. “Bulletproof Heart” is so romantic and such a powerful song. 

“SING” gets a lot of crap for being ‘too poppy’ for “Danger Days” but I disagree. The music video follows the Killjoys breaking into the evil BL/ind organization to save The Girl from Korse. A struggle ensues in which they all die; however, they do succeed in saving her. 

The rest of the album takes place before the kidnapping and deaths. “Planetary (GO!)” is a party song with its poetic lyrics about the folly of fame contributing to the song’s dance party concept. 

“The Only Hope For Me is You” has an intro that feels like a hazy dream as the synth sweeps up the song. It is a power ballad and highlights the war (the Analog War, according to the comics) that the characters are fighting, with constant mentions of guns and bombs. The song shows that the Killjoys have nothing left but each other. 

“Jet-Star and the Kobra Kid / Traffic Report” adds so much to the world. Are they dead? Who knows! Keep listening to find out! 

“Party Poison” is such a good rock introduction to the chaotic character of Party Poison. It starts with a clip of the character talking about bombing since, according to him, life’s too short not to fight. There’s a reason that he’s the leader of the rebellion in this war. “Save Yourself (I’ll Hold them Back)” is a good sneak peek at what the Killjoys will become. 

“S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W” feels like a lullaby to The Girl. I should explain a little more about her character here.  The Girl is nameless. When the Killjoys took her in, they didn’t want to give her a name but let her decide for herself. She’s the main protagonist of the comics. 

“Summertime” feels like a somber prequel to “Bulletproof Heart,” like love before the war. “Destroya” takes us right back to speed. A duet between Gerard and Frank, the song includes moaning, which makes this the most awkward song to play out loud. However, it adds to the story. 

“The Kids From Yesterday” has a music video consisting of footage from MCR’s last tour, but I feel like the song is the Killjoys coming to terms with the fact that they’re gonna die.

“Goodnight, Dr. Death” is the official end of the album, where the titular Doctor is murdered as the national anthem plays. The last song is “Vampire Money,” which was written as a response to people asking Gerard to be in “Twilight.”

They're a dull black that it takes him a moment to realize must be chalkboard paint, because near the tables there are words and doodles, and all over, even the erased sections are stained with faint colored marks like the walls have soulmarks.)

In fact, until the late 1940s, national networks prohibited the broadcasting of recorded programs because of its inferior sound quality. It was only after World War II, with the development of high fidelity, that recording became more common. On the air… Panic! How Orson Welles Created a Radio Legend The story of War of the Worlds first appeared in two magazines in 1897: Pearson Magazine (in the UK), and Cosmopolitan (in the USA.). It became a real book from the publisher William Heinemann a year later, in 1898. The science fiction novel, written by HG Wells, is one of the first to imagine a struggle between humans and aliens invading Earth. In the evening of October 30, 1938, the radio adaptation was broadcast live as part of Mercury Theater on the air, narrated by Orson Welles. It could have been another adaptation, another radio show, but it is now etched in the history of radio drama forever. The original story takes place in England, but playwright Edward Koch decided to make the decor more attractive to American listeners and changed it to take place in New Jersey. Everyone involved in the production agreed that the first part of the adaptation would be made to resemble a news program, in order to appear more realistic. With the brilliant interpretation of Orson Welles and the excellent work of the production team, who managed to create what looked like a regular radio broadcast interrupted here and there with newsletters, they got exactly what that they had negotiated. And then some. Those at home who missed the opening announcement, which contained the only warning that it was a fictitious radio play, believed that the stories being told were really happening and took to the streets in panic. If they had stayed during the second half of the drama, which was broadcast in a more conventional style, they would have realized how stupid they had been. People got so angry at the repercussions of the play - and, I bet for being mistaken for fools, bless them - that the Federal Communications Commission had to make changes to the way broadcasters clarified the veracity - or fiction - of their radio dramas. Focus on drama. Later, when asked about the panic caused by the show, Welles was asked to say if he shouldn't have softened the drama, to which he replied: "No, you're not playing murder with sweet words." Congratulations to our man Welles. Of course, upon hearing this story, we would like to believe that we are wiser and more informed these days, but with all the false news that is spreading, we should all be ready to humbly descend from our great horses. The continuation or cancellation of these broadcasts is determined directly by their listeners, rather than on the agenda of a radio station. Even people on a very limited budget can create a podcast from scratch from their home and be successful. With just a laptop and a microphone, you're ready to bring great audio content to your home's merchandise. There are free programs like Audacity which allow you to record, erase and move audio tracks to create a flawless recording capable of engaging thousands of people. The possibilities extend to creativity. With the tools we have now - phones with great cameras and good technology are getting cheaper and more widely available - such productions could very easily be done in video form, but there are many advantages to choosing to produce - and - consume audio instead of video: audio is easier to record and edit than video, and it requires less storage space. It is also much cheaper to create an entire production based solely on sound effects than to create anything to tell the same story on video: the accessories, the decor and the costumes represent a lot of work and, above all, a big spent. For consumers, audio does not require as much attention and does not require as much of our time: with audio, we do not need to sit and watch. The soap opera allows us to be productive while we consume it, and it can even be used as a supplement for chores, and vice versa. My household chores, commuting, and exercising have become much more interesting since I discovered radio theater and audio books, as this now means that I can also read / learn. I take as much time to do chores as I do to finish listening to my favorite book, TED Talk or radio comedy. I am productive in two ways, and whatever the task at hand, I lighten up because I have something to have fun while I do it. The audio allows me to continue.
