holy unmitigated fuck, this site really can be a cesspool. i’m not interested in elaborating on that further, but i will say that:

i hope anyone who decides to leave (temporarily, permanently, or for an unknown period of time) to prioritize their own mental/physical health, well-being, and/or security is met — exclusively — with understanding and support.

i hope that anyone standing on this gd trash barge truly knows that they owe nothing to anyone — not content, not responsiveness, not emotional endurance, not their presence; and that any decision to pause/stop providing any or all of those things is valid.

i hope that anyone who leaves this site, for any period of time and for any reason, knows that there are people out there — many people — who wish them nothing but the best; that their presence here meant something positive to more than just one somebody; and that they matter — present tense — whether or not they stay on this platform.

i hope that anyone — on or off this site — is able to protect their peace; that you all have access to whatever it is you need to feel okay; and that you can make your health and safety your first priority as often as possible.

most of all, i hope you are firmly on your own team, as difficult as that idea tends to be in practice.

There’s a biweekly meeting for a semi-voluntary thing I do at work that I haven’t attended since they moved it to a time that is totally fine if you’re in Boston (HQ), but 7:30 pm if you’re in Berlin. I’m the only EU-based representative on the meeting.

Every time it comes into my inbox because they change the meeting room or add a new agenda document, I decline it with an “outside EU working hours” note and every time they don’t do anything about it.

It’s been six months.

Art Spiegelman is still alive. He is not a millionaire. Buying his books helps him. Borrowing them from the library helps him. PIRATING THEM DOES NOT. IT ACTIVELY HURTS HIM BECAUSE IT ARTIFICIALLY DEFLATES DEMAND.

I know you want to read the story. However, you are not ENTITLED to read the story, just because you want to read it now and you don’t want to wait for the library hold to come in. You don’t get to just have immediate access to marginalized creators’ work for free because you think that consuming their trauma is the unpleasant homework you have to do to become Unproblematic.
