Acknowledging that those in the Seam are brown - Katniss being mixed cause of her white mother, but presenting as brown - and the Covey being indigenous/Roma coded is important in many ways, many of which, have been discussed before.

I want to focus specifically how it demonstrates how insidious Snow is for demonizing not just the Covey, but Covey women. He, a white man, is the most powerful person in the nation and chooses to perpetuate D12 as the worst district because that’s where Lucy Gray’s family was corralled into, the home of a rebellious victor’s Covey lover and of course, the girl on fire.

He’s already ugly for being misogynistic but his misogyny intersects with his racism and its impact is so devious. He truly believes that Lenore Dove doesn’t truly love Haymitch and actively paints a brown woman as self-interested and cunning. And surely Haymitch would’ve submitted after the horrific death of his mother and brother but no, he had to target Lenore Dove too. Haymitch fed his lover and it killed her, the same way Snow wished he could’ve killed Lucy Gray - directly and painfully.

I just saw a video of someone saying they don’t like the addition of the Covey in the prequels they thought that Lucy gray and Lenore dove felt like manic pixie dream girls and that the covey felt kind of just one note which I don’t necessarily disagree with, but all the comments were tearing this person apart and saying that it makes them a colonizer to say they dislike the covey because they’re indigenous coded and based on Romani people. What’s your take on the addition of the covey, and then this situation?

I don’t take extreme issue with the Covey I think there are other things about the prequels that are worse. I do wish Lucy Gray and Lenore Dove felt more developed and distinct from each other. For Lucy Gray you can make the excuse that we’re learning about her from snows perspective and he has idealized her and only thinks about her in terms of himself, but then Haymitch treats Lenore Dove almost exactly the same. I feel like you can acknowledge what a group or character is meant to represent and still acknowledge that maybe the execution wasn’t done very well especially when the author isn’t of the culture they’re representing? Idk to me it feels like this comes back to people acting like SC is above criticism.

Authors are not gods, they are in fact willingly sharing their work with the public and part of sharing a story is expecting people to analyze it. Be it good or bad, that’s the reason that universities focus on critical thinking when studying literature. Nobody is above or below being critical of any work.

I think the covey are far too simplified as a concept and the way they’re actually represented in the books. Sure you could say they’re Romani coded but if you’ve also studied Native American history they can fit into many different Indigenous groups that also tend to have nomadic lifestyles and are very family oriented. It takes a village to raise a child is something that every Native person I’ve ever meet shares a sentiment with and they have very close familial ties. I’d also like to note that I currently live around the Canadian Rockies and the university that I went to is built on Treaty 7 lands. I’ve had the privilege of being able to see a portion of their cultural practices and what they are still able to do in today’s world when they have been confined to a single plot of land.

All of that being said what we do know about the Covey does not properly line up with what we do know about both Romani and Native groups.

1) Romani people are known for being nomadic yes, but they also intermingle with people from the areas they travel through which is why they always look so diverse. Romani people are also most heavily associated with living in Europe so if we are to base the covey on them solely, then by extension they would have ancestors that came over from Europe to North America at some point and then started intermingling again. Most Roma groups are actually settled and do end up staying in communities that they like, meaning they don’t stay nomadic forever; but they’re not forced to stay in one spot, they choose to.

2) If the covey are based on Indigenous people why make Lucy Gray so adamant that her people aren’t a part of district 12 when everyone else in the seam is also by the books standards, Indigenously coded? Why add a second layer of segregation to a group of people that are already marginalized and make the split between them even further. There are also no cultural practices that the covey perform, even something as simple as smudging, that tie them directly to any Indigenous practices.

Neither of those two groups line up with how the covey are actually presented in universe. The characteristics of the covey includ: musicians, naming their children after poetry and colours, and feeling superior to everyone else around them because their life style is better. A portion of that last one can be somewhat excused in bosas because it was all form Snow’s point of view and he was trying to convince himself that it was okay to fall for Lucy because “she’s not district, she’s special, she’s covey,” so from his perspective he’s very bias towards them to try and justify his own feelings.

Lenore Dove does not get the same grace because she is literally ‘not like other girls’ personified, only we know Haymitch isn’t a classist asshole from the capital so he isn’t making up excuses for why it’s okay to like Lenore like Snow did with Lucy. Lenore is ‘not like other girls’ because: she has geese that hate everyone and have apparently attacked people? (Normal geese aren’t inherently dangerous, and Canadian geese are more dangerous but only during mating season when when their eggs are hatching so Lenore’s geese are just assholes), she paints anti capital slogans in town but doesn’t tell Haymitch about it despite being ‘the love of her life’, she hates Maysilee because she has a pet canary and she doesn’t deserve her mockingjay pin because reasons. She’s we don’t actually see any of this, it’s all told to us, but it doesn’t make her sound likeable and that isn’t he kind of person I’d want representing any marginalized group.

Looking at the covey and saying they’re Romani because they’re musicians is also an outdated racist stereotype. The Hunger Games isn’t the Hunchback of Notre Dame that was published in 1831. While Romani people do have musicians and they do tend to play music where they settle, one of their defining features is their language, not their music. It’s complicated to place the covey because they really aren’t one concept of a group and I don’t think Collins should have ever boiled them down to a specific group like she tried to do.

All of the covey characters that we get introduced to are very similar to each other because I don’t think Collins was actually trying to convey them as people, rather as concepts and especially as ways to strip originality from her own books. Lucy Gray being the creator of the hanging tree song is the biggest offender to me; we couldn’t let something stand on its own and imagine that it was probably a war song during the first rebellion against the capital and that was why Katniss’ mom had such a quick and negative reaction to her child singing it at a young age. It could have been a song that insights rebellion (like it was shown to be in Mockinjay), instead of just a song that was performed once and only in front of peacekeepers.

Collins then tired to explain that away with Lenore singing forbidden songs in the town square, including hanging tree, in front of an audience of people. It’s a retcon of a retcon and that’s wild to me.

I dislike the covey, yes, because they’re poorly done and their existence is so shoehorned into the books to try and make them feel like the most important people in the whole series without having any real meaningful impact on the og novels and it’s just annoying. Not to mention they completely disappear by the 74th games so their existence doesn’t have any true impact on the story outside of: the songs Katniss sings aren’t forbidden rebellion anthems by the capital which was why they’d been powerful. Instead they’re just something that made Snow upset personally once, and Haymitch gets to be eternally enslaved to a dead child because all of his reasons for rebelling were actually Lenore’s and not his own hatred of the capital.

The two youngests rushed home like never before. They probably looked close to crazy, the expensive, luxurious neighbourhood not used to seeing someone rowdy and quick - the rich had enough time for everything it seemed.

But neither of them two could stop and care about their outlooks. Their breaths fanged against their face masks as they hurried up the little hill to one of the expensive villas secluded from the busy city.

The maknae held the flimsy plastic bag closely in his fist, the medication inside along with a few more things they had picked up by the pharmacy they thought might help, even if they had practically no idea as for what exactly was happening back home.

But even now, there were waves of distress going continuously through the strong bond the alphas shared, and so they both pushed their legs a little more, worried about what went down. And you. Mostly you, to be honest.

When Taehyung hurried to push in the first entrance code, quickly unlocking the metal gate with his key, the younger didn't even wait for him to open it fully, already pushing himself through, running over the few tens of meters to their front doors.

He wasn't even worried about the ice hidden amongs the white spects of snow as the alpha did a absent-minded scent check of their entire property. But he couldn't smell anyone who didn't belong there, and so he was left calm.

Perhaps if he and the other alpha hadn't rushed in just the way they did they would have noticed the rustled snow just by the right side of the pack house's garage opening, the disturbances leading further to the back.

Jungkook rushed to unlock the second entrance, the system emitting a loud beeping melody at the intrusion, as both him and Taehyung clambered inside, only kicking of their shoes and locking the door behind them.

They left their jackets, hats and masks on, only tugging them off as they made their way further inside to where the scents were the strongest - and it reeked of pheromones, worry and distress.

The usually clean and airy bedroom their packalpha occupied was left a mess. Mostly scent wise though, having both of the alphas breathe in sharply as they took in the sudden scent difference. As they finally adjusted after a few short moments, Jungkook could finally feel the blood thumping in his ears subside after he saw you.

You were tightly curled up against Jimin, laying with your legs almost up to your chin, cradled to him so close as the man kept on rubbing his chin up and down your neck, cheek, top of your head, cheek and neck against, restlessly.

Hobi sat with his back facing to the door, only quickly turning, just the way they had all done the moment they had entered the tussled room, before he focused back on rubbing all your pressure points by your feet, hoping to take your attention from your hurting tummy.

Yoongi sat behind Jimin, not able to lay down and calm down, his hand holding onto your wrist in a tight hold, his thumb pressed right up against your pulse. It wasn't like you were dying, he would keep on reminding himself, but he couldn't help himself.

Jin fretted over you from sitting on your other side, his hand softly comforting your leg in gentle motions as he cooed and kissed your shoulder every once and again. And Namjoon, the always so collected packalpha, sat just by your head which partly rested against his lap, his hands combing through your hair, his palm always quick to cover your tightly clenched one on his hoodie whenever the pain would get to you, shushing your soft, hurting whimpers.

Both of the youngests couldn't help themselves, seeing you so vulnerable, hurt and of need of comfort. They took quick rushed steps to you, one of them kicking the doors back closed in a hurry, before they both clambered close.

But even in their frantic state they made sure not to touch the bed in any way. No matter your state it was still your nest, even if it now has been ruffled and practically turned over. That didn't matter.

„Did you brought the medicine for her?”

Yoongi didn't even ask, all politeness thrown out of the window a while ago. They had a bigger matter at hand - you needed help, and they were meant to do just that. His hand has already outstretched towards the rustling plastic, thought his other thumb stayed tightly pressed to your wrist, the alpha still wanting to watch over you.

Thrusting the bag to his older, the youngest's eyes couldn't help but gloss over, watching you and you shook and whined. Taehyung was no better, while quiet, his mind has been going overdrive with trying to figure out what to do. He was already leaning over with the glass tipped to your lips, his thumb swiping over the few droplets of water that escaped just by the corner of your mouth, his watchful eyes set, closely examining you.

When your little hand, seriously, since when did they seem so pale and cold, pushed against his chest, he was quick to recoil with the drink, his sleeve wiping just by your lips to dry them off. You stayed quiet for a second, breathing shallowly, your eyes closed and brows furrowed.

Finally, as you opened them, they took in first the two youngests, anxiously waiting by the side of the bed for your permission. You didn't have the strength to say they could enter, but they could all understand at your little whimper, your eyes meeting both of theirs as you tugged and pulled a bit at the blanket just bellow you.

Immediately, Taehyung rushed up, his coat long dropped on the floor as he crawled over his hyungs to get to you, his cheek profusely rubbing and scenting your entire face, neck and shoulders, having you whimper after a particularly strong tussle.

Jungkookie was no better, his arms wrapping around your middle in the upmost gentleness, not squeezing at all, as his nose stayed tucked right up against the crook of your neck. Only when the packalpha's fingers wrapped around the back of his neck, the spot where he could he scruffed if needed by him, did he recoil, his soft growls and rumbles sounding as his both palms kept on rubbing up and down your thighs and knees as he stayed seated quite literally at your feet.

You rested you head against Yoongi's lap before you knew it, so tired and exhausted. You still felt nauseous, but not like throwing up at the moment, and so you laid down once more. Jimin was quick to quite literally almost velcro himself right up against your back, his fingers caressing your arm as he pecked the skin just behind your ear.

The absence of religion in THG has been fascinating to me recently. A big theme of the books is “what are humans capable of when left to our own devices”. When you have no predetermined moral code or higher power to abide by other than your government and the base need to survive- what are you able to justify? Obviously I think of Gaul after Snow kills Bobbin in the arena- “that is humanity undressed”. The only times we hear about any kind of religion is from Lenore Dove and Lucy Gray when she sings the Old Therebefore (and now I guess Burdock in sotr), but they’re Covey, not district, they didn’t operate under the oppressive society of Panem, strictly speaking. They were nomadic and connected with nature, they passed down stories through their generations, so it makes sense that they would have heard about things like heaven and angels. But Katniss doesn’t know what angels are- she sees the paintings of them on the ceiling and describes them as chubby babies with wings. What happened to cause its disappearance? Did the founders of Panem know that religious extremism was the root cause of the destruction of North America and so they erased it? Or were there just so few people left? Or did the founders think that it was the Capitol people should worship instead of a god? When you don’t have a heaven to go to when you die or someone “judging” you when you get there, is there no incentive to be morally just? Perhaps the Capitol thought so. Perhaps the founders became authoritarian over the districts because resources were scarce and they felt justified to exercise extreme control “for the good of the country”? Is it heaven enough for the district citizens to just get to rest after living a life in fear and poverty and oppression (jfc talk about questions that make you hyperaware of your privilege…)? Collins really did a masterful job of exploring this society without the influence of religion, and we know it was intentional because of these little tidbits from LD, LG, and Katniss that show the echoes of the past ideologies.

--> Really witty banter - it's snarky too. I'd cast Gray as Regina George. You get used to it, and you end up giving it right back at him. He'd probably ask if you had any plans for the night, you'd respond 'no' just happily thinking that he was going to ask you on a date, but instead he'd call you a loser and walk away. There will be times when you will outdo him. Relish in these moments, because he will pause, and smirk, and admit that you beat him. Take a mental picture.

--> Sleep cuddling - for someone who isn't big on PDA or really any form of public declaration, he really can't let go of you if sleeping together. This man will roll over in his sleep to latch on. Its a strong grip that will wrap around you. It's comforting trust me. He's the one to rise early too. In those moments, when you're still asleep and he's just waking up, he'll reflect on how much he truly cares and feels for you. If there's a subconscious need telling him that he needs to be touching you, then he's listening to that.

--> It took him ages to confess - 400 episodes or so and counting? 👀 Anyway. He let these feelings simmer for a long time. He kept making excuses and had no intention of embarrassing himself if you didn't feel the same way. It really took Lucy shoving him in your direction for him to actually confess anything at all.

--> Still awkward at planning dates - He hasn't cracked this code yet and he's not about to go asking Natsu for any advice for grand gestures.

--> His clothes = your clothes - if he's going to leave them lying around everywhere then what's the point in him getting them in the first place? You start wearing his clothes. They're comfy, and someone might as well get some use out of them. That little black jacket of his with the fluffy white trim? It now belongs to you. That one he can let you have...he has a soft spot for seeing you in that jacket.

--> Jealousy - he is not openly jealous, but there will always be a colder than usual aura around him if anyone tries anything will you. He'll make it subtle, of course, by getting close to you in front of the person, putting an arm around you, touching your hair, doing anything to make it known that you're together, but not letting himself get sucked into the PDA vortex.

--> Secret dates - eclipse arc really awoke something in this man. He'll start suggesting dance classes together, or even just around the house so it's more secret. He'll beg you to keep it a secret (just think of Troy from Community doing secret dance lessons - that's Gray). It soon becomes a fun activity that you can do together.

-- Snow adventures - set this man to make some snow structures. Easily done with the use of his magic, of course, but sometimes you want the genuine feel of working in the snow, having your fingertips go numb, and then running inside for a hot chocolate. Other times you can get him to make an ice slide and have fun on that if you can't find anywhere suitable for sledding. The best part is that he won't feel the cold, so you can just steal more of his clothes. The Snowbaird fanfic rec list!

Before we start, some notes:

As we all know Snowbaird is fucked up and toxic 😌😌 but there are;;; levels to it so for easy navigation I have color coded this fic rec! Blue is for fics that are less toxic (now that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s NO toxicity but it definitely stands on the sweeter side of the Snowbaird spectrum) whereas red stand for "god these fucked up bitches 😍😍" (though for me a big no no is loveless Snowbaird, so even the more toxic fics in this list they do love each other!) - Ive also added an orange category for the mid level fics/ones where I couldn’t quite decide where they would rank- still, do keep in mind that those rankings are based on my personal judgement (plus I’m going off memory for some of the fics) so they may not be fully accurate.

Im also adding a "heavy smut" mention to some of these fic - that means the smut takes center stage in the fic and is pretty much unavoidable to properly read the story, a lot of the other fics on this list will still contain smut, but to a lesser extent/in a way where it’s not an integral part of the plot - remember to read the tags and curate your reading experience!
