reading the authoritarian personality is making me reconsider the stakes of that “should you lie to your children and tell them santa exists” debate. I never had really strong feelings on the subject but now I’m wondering if you should actually tell your kids santa is real for the express purpose of teaching them the lesson that authority figures you trust will lie to you, so you need to evaluate information on its merits instead of believing that authority = truth
