So yesterday I watched all the historical scenes of Crowley and Aziraphale in chronological order and then feverishly came up with a new interpretation of the "you go too fast for me Crowley scene" so here it is:

Ok so now we know from season 2 that the Dirty Donkey pub where Crowley holds his heist-planning meeting is right across the street from Aziraphale's bookshop. This means that when Aziraphale goes to meet Crowley in his car he literally just walks across the street, but it also means that when Crowley offers to drive Aziraphale somewhere he isn't offering to take him home. The previous implication of that interaction was that Crowley was going to drive Aziraphale back to his bookshop, but Crowley knows that the bookshop is only a 30 second walk away so that's obviously not the case. In fact, Crowley doesn't actually ask Aziraphale if he wants to be driven home, what he actually says is "can I drop you anywhere?" and then "I'll give you a lift, anywhere you want to go".

So now we know that Crowley isn't trying to drive Aziraphale home, the conclusion we have to draw is that he's asking him if he wants to go somewhere else with Crowley. This is kind of a covert way of wording things, but Crowley is still testing the waters at this point in their relationship. He pulled this same tactic in 1941 when he said he would give Aziraphale a "lift home" and then ended up taking him somewhere else which led to them spending the entire evening together. "I'll give you a lift" has essentially become code for "let's hang out". This also explains why Crowley looks genuinely disappointed and upset when Aziraphale turns down his offer (and why Aziraphale acts apologetic about it).

But, considering that we know Aziraphale has fallen for Crowley by now AND that they went out together in 1941, why the "you go too fast for me Crowley" line? My explanation is this: in 1941, Crowley nearly got in big trouble with Hell simply for having been seen with Aziraphale, and not only did he not seem that bothered by it but he is now asking Aziraphale if he wants to go out again even though they've both been directly confronted with the risk this poses for him. I think it scares Aziraphale that Crowley is willing to risk so much just to spend time with him - he's not ready to confront the truth of what that means yet, and he's also not yet at the point where he'd be willing to take the same risk with Heaven. As usual, Crowley is a step ahead of him in terms of his commitment to their relationship, hence "you go too fast for me". Keep in mind that Aziraphale was very caught up in the moment in 1941 and has had a lot of time to reflect since then about the potential consequences of a relationship with Crowley, and he's just not ready yet even if he definitely wants it.

As a side note, I think it makes a lot of sense that this is the point when Aziraphale agrees to give Crowley the holy water (and why Crowley is more determinedly seeking it in the first place), because now both he and Crowley more fully understand the the danger Crowley will be in if Hell finds out what the two of them have been up to.

AW2 Spoilers. About Warlin Door and what he means in the story.

gonna start this off by saying; i fully think Door is Saga's dad. and the game gives lots of implications and context for it.

Tim Breaker told Alan he'd been having dreams about Door for years, and even drew a picture of what he looked like. When asked by Alan about being related to Sarah and Deerfest still being a thing, he mentions that she helped him find a case about a man going missing in the 80s who apparently got struck by lightning at Cauldron Lake, who looked just like the sketch that he made of Door.

When Saga goes to see Odin, there's a paper that talks about the times he's lost his eyes. It mentions that he had it taken out 3 times. It says that the third and last time he had it was in 1988, and that "he who stands on the threshold took it from me".

There's a manuscript that gives the exact details on that very event. Odin and Tor were apparently "facing something even more powerful, something harder to define even." The person they were facing was described as "the dark one who yearned to stand in between, who has always stood in between, who would soon stand in between". It details that the brothers made a deal with this "dark one" to help him, in exchange for him leaving the family alone. The "dark one" makes sure they remember the deal by taking Odin's eye as collateral, and then he leaves in a flash of lightning Odin has been without his eye ever since.

Saga mentions that she never got to know her father, that he died before she could ever remember him, and her mother, Freya, didn't tell her anything. Odin tells her that her mother did the right thing by leaving and taking Saga with her.

Saga asks Tor about him being her grandfather and why they were distant. He apparently wasn't a good father to Freya, which he admits he was wrong to treat her like that. But also mentions that Saga's father was also causing problems for the family.

When Saga asks Tor about her dad, Tor says that "Some doors are better left closed." He explains that her dad was a "complicated bastard" and "always thinking too many steps ahead". He says "there was trouble, and then he was gone.", then says he "didn't handle it well". And that event is what caused Freya to finally separate from the family all together.

When Alan meets up with Door for the fourth and last time, Door seems upset with him, being genuinely irritated by what he's doing. Alan's confused and doesn't understand why he's suddenly like this. Door says that Alan is lucky to have so many people fighting for him, mentioning his wife. Alan states that he needs to get to Alice because she's in danger. To which Door says;

"She is, because of you. And so is someone important to me, someone you pulled into this. You keep opening doors, peeking in. Reaching through to get what you want, and that puts you in my path."

When Saga goes into the dark place and finds Tim, he gives her a page that describes how Door travels through it. She profiles Door, trying to figure out who he is. He ends up just saying this;

"A door that stands between two rooms is in both. A door that can lead anywhere is everywhere. That door is the center. He governs the currents of reality."

Saga is confused because of all the powers she's seen recently and doesn't "know who is playing who". She then goes; "Opening too many doors. This isn't important right now, I can look into it later."

So not only is Saga the granddaughter of the god of lightning and the grandniece of the god of war, she's also the daughter of an entity that can seemingly travel through realities without a problem and can go to any world he chooses. So it's very possible she MIGHT have this power, and that it needs to be unlocked.

This still doesn't really explain why Door seems to have a connection to Tim, why he tried talking to Dylan and telling him about the other worlds, or why he chose to keep Alan entertained from losing his mind in the dark place. There's also nothing to give context as to why Odin and Tor truly didn't like Door, because it can't have just been that they didn't like his powers. Or maybe that was it, Door was so powerful that they knew he would end up hurting Saga, intentionally or not.

It could be that Door is the true owner of the dark place, and that Alan getting mixed up in all this was terrible luck, because it did just end up hurting his daughter, to which he shifts the blame fully to Alan for writing her into the story.

Maybe Door created the dark place originally as some sort of prison for evil entities like Scratch and Baba Yaga and all that stuff, and now it's all back firing because Alan got trapped and had to use real world events to try and escape.

Tor was not kidding when he said the family was fucked up.

you, and lucas were gathered at your house, waiting for the rest of the party to get there. you all were going to be at your house this time because mike's basement was getting a small renovation.

you both sat in an uncomfortable silence, not being used to being alone with each other. "i heard there's going to be a big storm coming soon." lucas pointed out.

you nodded your head, continuing the subject about the weather. but the weather wasn't the only thing on your mind, you wanted to ask lucas about mike.

since you moved to hawkins, you were unable to stop thinking about the freckled face boy. you've known him for years now, but you were still unable to understand his mind. mike was reserved and quiet while lucas is unfiltered and loyal, lucky for him, max and him had similar personalities.

mike didn't seem that was interested in you in the slightest bit, and it made you wonder if your physical differences were unappealing to him. was your hair too long, too short, too thin? were your eyes too wide or too large? or was it the color of them.

"lucas, do you think i'm pretty?" you asked out of the blue, completely shocking lucas with the question.

"uhm..."

you quickly restated your question, not wanting him to get the wrong idea, " i'm not asking if you find me attractive, i mean do you think that other people can find me attractive."

his face quickly softened, "and why would other people finding you attractive matter?" he genuinely asked.

you mentally facepalmed yourself. "i just want to know if i'm at least equally pretty as the other girls' you boys like."

"then yes, i think you're very attractive, (y/n)." he replied. but his reassurance just wasn't enough, it just made you more confused. what made you attractive to lucas that wasn't attractive to mike?

you looked over at him and smiled, "not as pretty as max, though?"

he let out a sigh, "i've never seen a girl so beautiful." he admitted.

and you just sat there. wishing someone would talk about you like that. wishing someone would look at you the way that lucas looks at max. wishing someone would create a giant radio just so he can talk to you from miles away like dusin with suzie.

mike had just made into your house, walking over to your living room where you and lucas were sat. "yes, i think you're very attractive, (y/n)." he had heard lucas admit.

the entire party was supposed to be meeting at your house, but lucas' confession was more than enough to make the dark brown-haired boy turn back around and exit the house.

mike thoughts are all over the place, not being able to organize them. he couldn't be upset about lucas liking (y/n) because he never brought up his feelings for (y/n) to anyone.

but what about max? everyone noticed max and lucas growing closer to each other. how could lucas lead her on and then move on to (y/n)?

maybe (y/n) wasn't the girl everyone perceived her to be after all.

after a while, the rest of the party had flooded in, all except mike. they didn't think too much of it, stating that he probably had to clean up or something.

they all sat in your living room, watching a continuous amount of horror films and throwing popcorn at each other.

after a while, it all started getting late and it was still a school night. before lucas left, he went up to (y/n) with a question in mind. "hey, (y/n)," he said as he walked over to you.

you hummed in response. "when you asked me if you were attractive, you said that you wanted to know if you were pretty like other girl us 'boys' like."

you nodded your head, not seeing what he was trying to get at. "were you talking about a specific boy"

blush quickly spread across your face. "you were talking about mike, weren't you?" you only shrugged, "yeah, but it doesn't seem like he's interested in me, which is fine." you stated whispering the last part.

"don't worry, (y/n). mikes just weird, he needs some time to open up."

you weren't so sure if you agreed with you thanked him and waved him goodbye as he rode away on his bicycle.

the next day at school was weird to say the least. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that mike was keeping a safe distance between you and the rest of the party.

while the rest of the party didn't seem to care about his behavior, you were absolutely livid. you were distracted the entire day, not being able to figure out why he was ignoring you all.

"i think we should go over to mikes house today." you randomly blurted out as you and the party ate lunch. "he didn't invite us over though." max stated matter of factually.

you rolled your eyes at her response, "that's not the point. he's ignoring us for no apparent fucking reason at all!"

"mike's just being his usual bitchy self, he'll be running back to us when he finds out that were literally his only friends." dustin brushed it off, finishing his lunch.

for the rest of the day, you tried to keep your mind of mike, yet it was almost impossible.

the last bell of the day had just rung. you were quickly stuffing your notebooks into your backpack, then rushing out of the classroom.

you went to unchain your bike, seeing that the rest of the party had already unchained theirs. just as you were getting done, mike walked out of the building. you looked over at mike, seeing him rolling his eyes at you.

you scoffed, completely shocked by his action, "the hell is wrong with you?"

he glared at you, still continuing to ignore you.. "mike, can we please talk?" you asked.

he cocked his head to the side. "what's wrong?"

"there isn't anything wrong, just wanted to tell you something while i have the courage to."

he shook his head. "(y/n), i already know."

you looked up at him in surprise, "you do?"

how does he know? did lucas tell him? no, he wouldn't do that! lucas is my friend.

"yes. and (y/n), i have to say... i thought you were better than that."

you were truly shocked by his response, how could your crush on him make you less of a person? "mike. i-i'm sorry?"

"i thought that you and max were friends! how could you do that to her," he turned around to lucas, "how could you do that to max?" his teeth were gritted, and his ears were starting to turn a cherry red.

"mike, what are you... what are you talking about? me and lucas, we didn't do anything to max!" you were now overly confused, so was the rest of the party.

he walked closer to you, making you step back more. "yesterday, i overheard you and lucas talking, i heard him telling you how attractive you were. how could you do that to max?"

his statement caught you off guard, "that's bullshit! you of all people should know that i would never do that to anyone, especially not max." you got on your bike and rode away, not taking a glance back once as you rode off.

lucas walked over to mike and pushed him. "you're so stupid, man."

max and the party had an extended amount of questions about the entire situation, but quickly understood what happened when lucas explained it all.

after confronting (y/n), mike was left confused and somewhat guilty. at dinner, his family notice how quiet he was. "mike, are your friends coming over tomorrow? i got some dvds from family video, wouldn't want them to go to waste." karen said, chewing away at her steak.

he just shrugged his mom off, continuing on to his thoughts.

"you of all people should know that i would never do that to anyone."

a little while later the party ended coming to his house, except for you, of course. lucas explained to him how everything was a misunderstanding and (y/n) just needed reassurance. reassurance because mike made you feel like you weren't pretty.

he felt so stupid. why couldn't he have just told you that he liked you?

mike went up to his room and grabbed his walkie talkie, switching to the right channel to talk to (y/n).

"(y/n)? (y/n), you there?" he asked softly.

you lay awake on your bed staring at the ceiling. once you heard your walkie talkie going off, you picked it up and extended the antenna. "(y/n) here." you responded.

mike took a deep breath before continuing to talk. "hey... i just wanted to say that i'm... i'm really sorry. i shouldn't have jumped to conclusions and i- i should've asked you what happened," he was quickly cut off from his rambling by you.

"mike, it's fine, you were just being a good friend to max, i get that. it would have been better for you to ask what happened, but it's fine, thanks for apologizing."

mike smiled, glad that she wasn't angry at him. "i uhm... i heard you had a crush on me." your face heated up instantly, "yeah, i guess you can say that."

"well, my mom brought some dvds from family video, would you maybe... possible want to come over and watch some movies at my house tomorrow?" mike asked hopefully. you smiled even harder than before, biting your lip. "that would maybe possibly sound good. see you tomorrow!"

"yeah, see you tomorrow mike!" lucas snickered into the walkie talkie, laughter being audibly heard in the background. mike groaned loudly, throwing his handheld transceiver across his room.

here's how I think the bots would react to u if u were overstimulated/overwhelmed

Rabbit: would immediately try distracting you with more chaos in an attempt to make you laugh. this has a 50% success rate and if she realizes it isn't working she'll just hug you silently till you stop crying, afterward offering things like snacks or sharing her own shortcomings. if necessary, the comfort movies will be used.

The Spine: notices your discomfort rather quickly and takes you away from the situation. he'll do the best he can to give you advice or try to help in some way (if you're crying/hyperventilating) and generally keep your surroundings quiet. he can be a little awkward with this as it isn't something he's typically used to, but helps u anyways because he's a cool robot :]. will try to take your mind off things with coversation of movies, music, dinosaurs, anything he can think of, listening intently to whatever you say. if you say you need anything (blankets, tissues, etc) he'll get it for you, but chances are if you know each other he'll already have those ready for you.

Hatchworth: wouldn't really pick up on your discomfort until you had to leave or you physically started crying/hyperventilating. means well though, and once he notices you're not doing alright he'll take you somewhere small to hide (a fort, under a table, behind a bookshelf) and ask you questions about why you're sad and why you do this. he has no malice behind his queries, he genuinely wants to understand how/why you do this and if he can help prevent it in the future. by the time you finish explaining things to him you'll likely to have calmed down, and then he'll offer a mystery sandwich. you must accept, even if you don't eat it.

Zer0: your mood is his mood. if he finds you upset or overwhelmed, he has a magic way of always understanding. he will provide you with hugs and silent comfort, possibly even crying a bit himself. a great bot to go to if you need physical comfort, or just to know someone else understands. will offer you his favorite dinosaur toys that he definitely didn't steal from Spine.

The Jon: taken aback at first by the sight of you, but will waste no time in bringing you either outside or to a pillow fort he made, staying close to you the entire time and keeping some sort of physical contact (i.e., hand on your arm, touching shoulders, just to remind you he's there and not going anywhere). will listen intently and happily talk to you for hours, not minding if you have a hard time responding (he'll wait patiently for you to respond). I mentioned that he does this in my headcanons list, but he'd definitely give you lil platonic kisses all over your face and hands. would also shower you with stuffies and things he finds around the area you two are in, trying to smile in hopes it will be infectious. if desired, he'll tell you whimsical stories and adventures of his time in Biscuit Town.

Upgrade: would offer if you wanted to rule alongside her (everyone knows she's a princess) in her kingdom, and would ramble on about your new royal duties and what her imaginary kingdom is like. she wouldn't really care if you listen or not, but you are expected to at least nod or acknowledge her. she'll let you have varying amounts of power over the kingdom depending on how sad you are.

I know a lot of minors aren't taught internet safety, so here are some internet safety tips. I learned these growing up, and by not being safe as a minor. Please note some of these have exceptions if a trusted adult is involved.

First, throw away the idea of the internet as a safe place. It is not safe. It never was and never will be safe. There are far too many people and things running around on the internet for it to be safe for anyone - adults included. But we can modify how we use it to minimize risk - that's all "internet safety" is. So, that said:

Do not give or display personal information (especially not to people you don't know offline). Use an alias, even on email accounts. Don't tell people how old you are, or where you live. Don't post your face, or pictures of anyone or thing that could be used to identify you. Keep any account with personal information private, only viewable to people you know in person. Make sure a trusted adult or friend is aware of what you do online - someone who knows things in case anything happens.

If you need to break some of the above rules due to dangers you face in person, stay anonymous. Blur your face and other identifying info. Make throwaway accounts. Only share what's necessary to help you, and nothing more. Be careful about where you seek help. If possible, find an organization with online resources or a hotline.

Stay away from adult spaces and pay attention to content warnings. Filter tags and phrases (ex: minors dni, nsfw, [insert your trigger here]). TW/CW tag content you post, too. Don't follow NSFW accounts, and certainly don't make one - there is no exception. Any sexual expression is best kept between you and your friends, in a safe, offline place. And any adult who tells you it's okay to be in 18+ spaces as a minor does not care about your safety.

Also, ideally, follow age ratings on media - social media and apps included. I know, this one isn't fun. Even Tumblr is 17+. You can have some really positive experiences on apps like this, so I wont tell you to gtfo. But you can just as easily have some awful ones. If you ever feel unsafe or distressed on a platform, please know you have every right to leave. Nothing is more important than your safety and wellbeing.

Lastly, I'm upset to say this one, but please dont fucking harass people. If you don't like someone, block them. And if someone is harming someone else, report them and let others know to block them. Harassing people online can, genuinely, kill them. I saw it happen the other day. (I mean this in the least hostile way possible) If you can't understand why this is wrong - that your actions and views may not always be justified - it is not safe for you to be online. In tandem with this, don't engage with upsetting things. Delete your discourse blog. Trust me - it's better to spend your energy on things that are actually fun and positive.

In summary: Stay anonymous. Keep private information private. Curate your online experience. Stay out of 18+ spaces as a minor. Be careful with who you trust, and treat people how you want to be treated. And while you do all this? Have fun! Remember, the internet (probably) isn't going anywhere. If you need a break, take it. Be kind to yourself - and others. The more people do this, the safer we all can use the internet.

This might be controversial but I'm saying it anyway: we need to stop blaming healthcare staff for poor care even when it seems like it's genuinely their fault, because despite what it seems, 90% of the time when doctors dismiss you, nurses are rude to you, and professionals 'don't know enough' about your conditions - these things are caused by systemic issues and not personal failures. They do care, they've just been broken by the system and unfortunately - despite their best effort and then some - they don't have endless patience and smiles left in them.

Let's use an analogy more people will relate to: say you work in a restaurant. Your manager has, for some reason, booked the restaurant out at double capacity. There are people who booked weeks in advance queuing for their tables, and there are walk-ins, too; not just people looking for a nice time, but road-tripping families with hungry kids who can't find anywhere to eat, people who have been sent here because the place they booked at unexpectedly had to close. They're hungry and many are in a bad mood.

If you're good at you job, I'm sure you could manage - despite the stress and vitriol - to handle things in a friendly and apologetic way. I'm sure you'd be able to politely turn people away with recommendations on alternative places to go, apologise when you were late with meals, and still do your best to refill cups and take payments with a smile.

Imagine your manager starting booking at double-capacity every single day.

Imagine watching this become standard practice throughout the city, then the region, then the country. Nobody has anywhere else to go. Let's pretend most of these people have no kitchens and can't cook at home; you are the only source of food for these people, and they need to eat. Every day you spend 10 hours dealing with hundreds of people sobbing, fainting, wasting away in front of you, but you still only have 30 tables and 4 line cooks. Every day you go home knowing you managed to get some people fed, but others are still waiting. You had to go home knowing they might be dead by tomorrow, but if you didn't leave, you might be.

How long do you think you could stay kind? Keep smiling? Keep empathising? All of these people, you know, have every right to eat. They need it. They come here because it's where people come for food. It's your job to feed them. But how long do you think it would take for you to start feeling like people are entitled, when they raise a hand and ask for more water? They're thirsty, and they've waiting a long time. They deserve that water. But do you not think that in your head you'd be screaming, you're thirsty? I haven't had a drink in 8 hours! there's a line out the door of people collapsing from dehyrdration! You're lucky to even have a seat! Do you not think that when someone came to you and said, please, do you have a seat, I haven't eaten all day and my stomach hurts, that you would think about the chaos inside - the chaos they can't see, the starving masses they can't see, the dying and dead they can't see - and tell them to go home and deal with it? How much sympathy could you have, knowing you had barely enough food today to keep everyone in the building alive, and people are complaining that it isn't enough? You know it isn't, but all you have.

Can you image going home, opening up your phone, and seeing an internet full of people talking about how mean you are, talking about their bad experience, saying if they hate serving me so much, why do the job? Would you think of quitting? Would you think of quitting, knowing they wouldn't replace you, and then think of all the people who would be getting one less drink, one less seat at the table, think of the colleagues who'd get one less break, ten more tables to wait?

The point is, you have a right to good healthcare, and the staff trying to give it to you are just as upset that they can't. Try to have some empathy. Your health issue is probably the only one you've dealt with today; the doctor that's telling you it's probably not a big deal has probably just seen ten people with a worse problems, and that doesn't make yours matter less, but she's been given 8 hours to help 100 people and you can't blame her for lacking patience when she knows her next ten minutes could save or doom a life. The nurse that rolled his eyes when you said you were in pain has seen so much pain today. He's jaded, broken, traumatised, a shadow of the genuinely good and caring person his is at his heart. Do you think you would be kind, patient, taking your time, empathising with everyone, if you'd been through the kind of abuse and trauma they have? No offence but some of y'all can't even be kind to people talking about their problems online without telling them to stfu until palestine is free

Please can we stop blaming each other. I know how easy it is to blame the person in front of you, especially when they're rude or dismissive and when you're suffering. I'm not saying it's okay or that you should be okay with it, and I'm not claiming that there are no genuine bad eggs in medicine, but let's not have patients blaming staff and staff blaming patients. Give people grace. Let's support each other in our shared suffering instead of lashing out. The healthcare system is abusing all of us. Stand together. Support the strikes. Empathise.

"You know, he didn't want me to come today," Paul tells him. He says it as a joke—to demonstrate the state of George's protective paranoia—but John doesn't laugh. A perplexed, little frown creases between his brows, instead.

"What do you mean?"

Paul feels embarrassed for a moment, his cheeks warming starkly against the cool autumn air around them. He's realises it might have sounded like a bigger deal than it really is, what with John going all serious on him.

"George thinks it's this whole thing like—" he stutters out, trying not to go too obviously red. He takes a breath, focusing on the burning end of his cigarette instead of John. "Well, he has this daft idea in his head like it's going to be Hamburg all over again or summat, you know. Like we're going to become best mates in an afternoon, and then you'll disappear, and he'll have to deal with me."

It's not exactly what George said, but Paul can tell it was what he meant.

Do you want me to come with you? George asked him, in that same conversation about the book event.

I dunno if I'm going, yet. I'll probably have to work, anyway, but if you want to see him you should go, Paul had told him.

And then George said: I'll go if you wanna go—his voice all gentle, like he was trying to reassure Paul of something.

George always fucking did that—talked about John like he was only ever Paul's friend. It frustrates Paul. Makes him feel embarrassed for bringing John up in conversation, when it isn't that he's desperate to talk about John, or whatever George seems to think. John's a thing they share. Paul brings him up because he figures George might like to talk about him, too, from time to time. But then George always turns sarcastic, or wary, and it ruins the mood of whatever story Paul wanted to reminisce about in the first place.

And really, Paul doesn't always want to deal with it; so he didn't say anything else about the book event, and he didn't say anything this morning, when he decided he was going to go.

"Why would he have to deal with you?" John asks, his voice even enough that Paul figures he—thankfully—hasn't noticed Paul's unplanned embarrassment about his flub.

"I don't know," Paul shrugs, taking another drag of his smoke. "He's not my bloody keeper."

He notices John watching him carefully, out of the corner of his eye. He holds out the cigarette in offering, not sure what it is John expects.

For the DVD commentary game

Ooh, I actually have lots to say about this one! For starters, when I was outlining this fic I was very precise about the reveal of information. I knew this scene was going to be the reveal of their relationships: first Paul's wife, then John's lover, then what happened in Hamburg with each other.

But I didn't originally have an introduction to that yet, they just went straight into talking about Paul's wife. I wanted it to be a bit more fo a shock than that though, and I didn't feel like the fic had addressed George enough up to that point (something I felt like John would've asked about, but didn't fit in anywhere else). So I wrote that they start by talking about George, and once Paul accidentally hints that maybe what happened in Hamburg had more of a significant effect on him than John believes, John gets curious/desperate enough to bring up the wife Paul hasn't mentioned at all.

The other thing is that later on in the fic, we learn just how devastated Paul actually was by what happened after Hamburg when we get that flashback to Paul crying when he realises that John's genuinely never coming back, and George finds him. This is like one of the first scenes I had for the fic, and again - I planned this very precisely - so I couldn't really get into just how upset he was yet, because it's going to come up later. I could only hint at it.

The good thing about this fic is that Paul is the denial king, so his POV is tailor-made for that kind of unreliable narrator nonsense. Paul never really acknowledges his feelings, but I could give an idea that they were there by using George's protectiveness. Paul says George had to deal with him, but we don't yet know what that really means.

And then, bringing George into it created this whole backstory of George as the one who had to put Paul back together after the heartbreak John caused him. Like, my brain went into detail about this. There's a whole mini-fic of George's post-Hamburg POV in my head. So George knows what seeing John again will mean to Paul, and he is rightfully concerned about how that will turn out given that from his POV John ditched them both and then Paul was so devastated he almost quit music entirely.

George kind of doesn't like John anymore because of this, which is why he doesn't join in on Paul's John stories the way Paul likes. But Paul doesn't like to feel judged, so naturally, he doesn't want to actually be honest about his desire to see John - even if George sees right through it. George is trying to leave space for Paul to be vulnerable about all the John-related feelings this is surely bringing up to the surface and Paul is going, no thanks! because he knows George won't approve, (and he just doesn't like talking about his feelings).

John is obviously not aware of any of this and is just trying to figure out what the fuck he'll have to deal with me is supposed to mean.

So lets start with the divergence that leads to Pharma being born.

It is in a story that set off a bigger AU and funnily enough it is definitely Springer's fault since he is doing the timeline meddling he promised.

It starts with this random green guy (Springer) saving Drift and Gasket and their friends before disappearing like some storybook hero recommending that Drift take his friend to a doctor. The group splits up to lay low and Drift remembering Ratchet takes Gasket to him. Ratchet fixes him up but catches something bigger he agrees to treat. It requires Gasket stay a few days and Drift stays beside him hovering protectively and Ratchet lets him sleep in the small attached apartment. Slowly the two of them relax and confirm Ratchet is actually honest and sincere.

Drift keeps insisting on cleaning which flusters Ratchet who isn't used to the help.

Drift feeling bad for him after he hears that people aren't coming which is causing issues because the statistics show it isn't being used so his backers are uninterested. He tells Drift not to worry, he'll keep it open with his own money if he has to. Drift after thinking decides to make sure everyone knows and graffitis the place with a "safe place" mark. Ratchet arrives in the morning and is upset but then Drift explains. His clinic is viewed with thinly veiled distrust and used mainly by the desperate as most similar clinics are covers for organ dealers. Ratchet hears that everyone thought he was a chopshop and is genuinely distressed.

Ratchet doesn't clean it and sure enough some people start coming. Drift starts helping with simple repair and assistant work. Gasket doesn't want to do nothing so Ratchet, insisting he still needs rest, trains him on intake and he works the front desk and records. Gasket is a trusted face and his warm demeanor is helpful in further reassuring everyone it is fine.

He is also the one who calls Ratchet out on any classist or unintentional Functionist comments he makes because Drift is kind of starry eyed phase currently and just taking them. Ratchet learns and he in Drift start to get more comfortable with Gasket giving them a knowing look though he is keeping a sharp eye on Ratchet.

I'm going with Drift was religious so when things are going well he uses his first paycheck to actually go make a "proper" offering at the temple and pray there. Ratchet makes some comment and they argue a bit which makes Drift spiral with worry about getting them kicked out.

Ratchet has a "oh shit" moment realizing that he has power in this dynamic when Gasket, who doesn't fear anything and has been carefully making sure they had backup since the clinic gave him a moment to breath, which makes him uncomfortable.

He gives Drift keys to the clinic and the deed to the attached apartment nearby guaranteeing that he cannot just kick them out and gets a contract to confirm it legally in a very unfavorable to Ratchet contract that he makes sure Drift has a copy of is registered in the system. Drift is wary and investigates himself, talking to Orion who introduces him to a lawyer named Minimus independently to review it and he finds out he legitimately has a home that cannot be taken from him.

Rachet is trying not to be too much and he and Drift eventually start arguing in a softer way when Drift is finally comfortable that it won't destroy anything. Things are taking a romantic turn and they are seeing each other and Ratchet starts spending the night. They still have some disagreements but are figuring out how to navigate them by themselves. Ratchet, though he still doesn't believe, is more comfortable with religion because it reminds him of Drift.

Orion Pax teases him about his new beau once but makes sure to keep a respectful distance as Drift and Gasket are a bit wary, though Drift warms up to him more when he recognizes him. Orion is actually the one who eagerly shares Megatron's writing with Drift. Decepticons are on the rise and Drift has taken an interest going to some speeches and meeting up with people to talk about it.

He even takes his time to write a response himself with his opinions which Gasket and Ratchet encourage. It gets some attention and he takes an active role in the local population with Gasket's philosophy about helping those closest to him, Drift starts organizing locally and helping others using the clinic apartment to help treat and teach and talk to people since it is a safe out of the way place. Ratchet doesn't disagree, not entirely, and covers for them when the cops come by which pretty much solidifies the "Doctor of Dead End's" reputation as decent.

Things escalate, of course, and Orion Pax drags Ratchet into his Matrix scheme. Senator Shockwave is introduced and takes an interest in Drift recognizing his name as their "local celebrity". Prowl and Chromedome also recognize it since Drift is apparently on a list now. Ratchet promises to be careful, but then Shockwave is taken and Orion Pax and his group are on the run. Things are cracking down and getting dangerous in Dead End, more than it already was. Ratchet isn't caught but he is interviewed and the cops come to turn over the clinic harassing them.

Things start to take a violent edge and Drift punches a cop and gets shot. He's alright but he is arrested and eventually released on bail. Then things escalate further and Alyon happens and Ratchet gets called to deal with the new sparks. He tells Drift what happens and he is encouraged to go.

This is the last time they see each other for a long time, because things escalate in the Dead End into a violent crackdown as the Dead End is being purged and Drift is caught in it and takes up arms, closing the clinic and joining in glad Ratchet isn't there.

Ratchet meanwhile is helping unload and care for the newborns getting them dispersed safely across various cities in Cybertron and discovers he is pregnant which is very illegal. He doesn't know if Drift is even alive after the Dead End Riots and hasn't been able to get ahold of him or find news so he keeps the baby and Pharma is born, registered as being from Alyon. He is holed up in Nyon's Acroplex working a new clinic that is even more illegal and definitely doesn't trust Zeta. Orion has the sense not to let Zeta in on all their secrets and doesn't say anything about Ratchet's location leaving Roller with him. Drift meanwhile is helping lead part of the infant Decepticon Movement and refuses to drag Ratchet into it even if he could find him.

And I will right more later. The quick summary is in the link though. This would basically be the end of Part I. It is a bit late so if anyone is interested I'll do a Part II later.

ive never actually talked about this oc on tumblr cuz i got the distinct feeling tumblr either wouldnt like it or wouldnt care (this is also why i dont talk about a lot of ocs very often and its usually just afhiri... low self esteeeeeeeem)

but i'll use this pose to give a lil rundown. trigger warning i guess for a generally terribly unhealthy and toxic relationship dynamic with weird shit like cannibalism and blah blah

this oc was specifically created because i wanted to explore orin's character more. i wasn't satisified with what she got, and i also am not really a dark urge fan/player so i don't have a durge to explore with orin (and i don't think i could do this now because i've fallen in love with a particular default durge interpretation i see on twitter a lot)

i wanted to make a werewolf in general cuz they're my favourites. cirok IS a werewolf but it's... not a typical werewolf and genuinely so fucked up. and i really liked the idea of a changeling with a werewolf, so i gave orin my more Typical werewolf

when orin is a young teen she finds a werewolf who is about the same age as her. orin decides she wants it, like a pet, and is able to convince the cultists who actually looked after her/raised her to essentially keep it as a pet and care for it... 'care' for it

they are raised together with the werewolf being orin's constant companion in every sense of the word. orin demands they are together whenever she can. they have a very close bond, which isn't quite owner and pet, but it skirts that line a lot.

orin trains the werewolf to be a cannibal and only eat people, this is partly for control reasons and also because it's fun to orin. the werewolf is specifically ordered not to hunt animals, and is punished when it does. so whenever the werewolf does hunt, it hunts the streets of baldur's gate for people to eat. it ends up developing favourites :)

orin also trains it to be tough and loyal in other ways. like orin practicing her blade work on it, which not only strengthens its skin with scar tissue, but also improves its pain tolerance, and tests how far she can go before it will act out. as they reach adulthood, it never tries to stop her - meaning she could kill it whenever she wants, and it wouldn't defend itself

going back to the cannibalism, the werewolf, in all of its love and devotion to orin, has determined she must be the most tasty meat of all. she's a changeling, the only it's ever seen, so it simply assumes she must taste unlike anything it's ever had. and because it loves her so, her scent alone is enough to drive it to a desire to devour her. orin uses this to toy with the werewolf, and will allow it to lick her, taste her blood, and various other things like placing her hand in its mouth to tease it. it would never bite orin without being ordered to, and sometimes she does allow it. when she's feeling particularly mean, she will taunt it about how much it wants to eat her, to see if she can break its resolve.

orin has also taken to drinking the werewolves blood, thinking it has forged a bond between them that transcends everything - they are connected through flesh and blood and it can never be severed.

the werewolf worships orin in a way that she could never get anywhere else. she has created the perfect creature for her, something that will always listen to her and respect her, that'll do anything she says, that will love her always no matter what she does, that will always provide whatever she may desire. if orin ordered it to die, it would. if orin ordered to eat itself, it would.

one of my favourite facts is that orin doesn't want it to ever leave the werewolf form. while this is technically impossible, and she will be visible angry and disappointed and upset if she witnesses the werewolf in it's usual form, she's found she enjoys a half transformed state a lot. so the werewolf has taken to forcing itself to be half werewolf, and half whatever it is when it isn't a werewolf. this form can and will look different! it's hard to keep up and is painful for the werewolf.

on that note, no. i don't know what the werewolf is when it isn't in its werewolf form. its race/species doesn't matter. i will never decide on this i don't even wanna think about it. Unimportant Information!

also because it is a dnd werewolf, it can be in Just A Wolf Form. sometimes it does this on its own accord and for orin. she doesn't mind it but prefers either full werewolf or the half transformed state. however sometimes u just wanna pet a wolf yknow. yknow???

Chapter 16 of Nona the Ninth

So I'm realizing now that these John chapters are occurring during times when Nona falls asleep in the story, so they may be Nona's dreams. But Nona has to describe her dreams to Camilla every morning, and so far she's only talked about dreaming about the pool scene, she doesn't talk about having these dreams about John, so I'm not sure they're actually her dreams, or if there's something going on here where Harrow and Nona are both in the same body and are having different dreams, like what happened in the last book, but I don't know

I wonder if she had some telepathic sense of Honesty getting all upset on the other side of the door

Well, I don't think that would really have inconvenienced Ianthe that much, but it would have been inconvenient to actually be down with the crowd during that, so

I was going to wonder why someone would specifically breed a dog to have six legs, but honestly, people specifically breed dogs to have a lot of random features purely to match someone's aesthetic idea of the The Ideal Dog, so sure, I can believe there's a breed of dog in this universe that was bred specifically to have six legs

It's interesting, because Hot Sauce could totally have let Honesty come with them and also go see the broadcast, but she didn't. I wonder if she sees the other kids as too young, but doesn't see Nona that way even though Nona is a lot more innocent than Honesty and Hot Sauce even specifically told her not to go to the park earlier, when she brought everyone else there except Kevin. Or maybe she just thought she had a better chance of coercing Nona into letting her go or coming with her if Honesty wasn't there?

So she does seem to know House genuinely, at least a little bit, and doesn't need whatever telepathy thing to understand it, but it's just a broadcast and Ianthe isn't actually there, and she doesn't mention having trouble again after this. Maybe there is something about seeing someone that ties into this power somehow? But the way Nona describes it doesn't really make sense without something supernatural happening

I wonder what kind of history New Rho has that there are 17 official languages. The only two real countries with more than 11 official languages are Bolivia and India, Bolivia having that number due to officially recognizing a large number of indigenous languages, and India having that many because there are like 700 different languages spoken in India, so only 22 of them being official is actually relatively conservative (and the country with 11 official languages is South Africa, which obviously also has colonial history). But I was under the impression here that most of the linguistic diversity of New Rho was due to people being temporarily resettled from other planets, there's basically no way that those languages would be official languages in this context. So is this then saying that there were 17 widely spoken local languages in New Rho before all the resettlement happened? Or does the fact that it's called New Rho mean that it has some colonial history (I mean, independently from whatever colonial history it has with the Nine Houses), and therefore was in the same situation as Bolivia and South Africa? If there are any indigenous people in this city, Nona hasn't made any comment about it

Earlier, it seemed like We Suffer thought that the negotiator was coming to negotiate with BOE specifically, Ianthe, or, I guess, John, seems willing to negotiate only with the local government, and even then, this agreement that she is suggesting seems to be designed to be broken instantly so that John can then do whatever he wants as punishment for that. Was there actually planned to be negotiation with BOE? Or does John not yet know what happened to the Sixth House and BOE are hoping they can force a negotiation with that info?

I also have to wonder how she's avoiding issues caused by the resurrection beast. I don't think it's someone pretending to be Ianthe, because she has the right eyes, and there isn't realistically anyone else who could have arrived in the shuttle

That's very much not a description of Ianthe's hair. Is she wearing a wig? Did she create different hair for herself with necromancy? The idea that Ianthe's natural hair was not aesthetically pleasing enough for this broadcast and had to be replaced is actually quite funny

I wonder if this is like, they know about the Sixth House and are hoping that they'll just be able to show up somehow, or if they know they left of their own volition and think they might be here for some reason but don't know that they're kind of being held hostage by BOE, or if this is just a general kind of thing they say when trying to reclaim old territory

I still have no idea how they use European royal titles in the Nine Houses. Before becoming a Lyctor, Ianthe was a princess, now she is a prince. What is the difference between a prince and a princess in this context? Certainly not gender. Is prince a higher title than princess? It's not clear

Is... is she still dead? Did John not actually resurrect her? Are we doing more Weekend at Bernie's where he's just parading around her never-rotting corpse and being like, yo, what's up, this is my daughter?

Or maybe, if she's actually alive because it's not possible for her to die, but just still missing her soul, John can't actually do anything about that?

Anyway, I'm sure if Gideon were actually alive she would have things to say here, and those things would probably be "what the fuck Ianthe" and she therefore wouldn't be part of the broadcast

Anyway anyway, I guess that's what happened to Gideon's body. I imagine John probably sees other people having possession of it as a national security risk at the very least, since it can be used to undo his blood wards

Apparently Kiriona is actually just the Maori equivalent of "Gideon", I can see how that would work out if there's no /g d/ and r is a rolled r or a tap. But you'd think that if John wanted to preserve the Maori language in some way he would have actually done that 10,000 years ago instead of, I guess we're supposed to take away, having everyone speak NZ English?

Also, John seems to be labeling her his heir, which is odd even aside from the fact that she doesn't seem to be alive, since John hasn't had an heir for 10,000 years and probably doesn't expect to ever die. I guess maybe after two people tried to kill him and one almost succeeded in the last book he is starting to feel a little more mortal? Only, to actually be his heir, I think Gideon has to be alive first

Honestly, at this point I think it's equally likely (maybe more likely!) that this was meant in "multiple people in the same body" sense rather than the "gender-neutral" sense. But it really should be "them" in this context, the way that "her" in the previous paragraph in the same context is also a object pronoun, and the way that we usually say "it is me" and not "it is I" like you're fucking Dracula or something

Wouldn't Camilla have gone out to pick up Nona and figure out what happened to Pyrrha before this? I can understand if she didn't want to go out when the broadcast was happening, but I don't get the impression that the Building is that far from the school - if Pyrrha left before noon to get Nona and then didn't come back for a couple hours, wouldn't Camilla go looking for her at that point?

i blame you for making me think about tommy and carol bc i've never really given them much thought before. they were clearly written to be these obnoxious high school stereotypes and not much more than that, so i love how you're looking through that and making them more dimensional. what do you think they'll grow up to be like? are they gonna leave hawkins after high school, will they stay there forever, will one of them leave while the other stays? will they grow apart after high school, or will they always keep that toxic codependency going? please gimme all your thoughts <3

ANNA! "i blame you for making me think of tommy and carol" are my FAVORITE words to hear sflkjgfdlkg that's like music to my ears. the more people i can get thinking deeper about tommy and carol the better fdkjgfl.

they fully were written to be those obnoxious high school bully stereotypes, but boy oh boy, there is SO much nuance in how the portrayals of these characters actually came across onscreen.

when i think of tommy and carol and their futures, i honestly can see things going a couple different ways - which mostly stems from the fact that there are a lot of little headcanon details about them i like to change up in my head that then directly impacts which route their futures would take (the biggest fluctuating details being their sexualities; how their future plays out will be fundamentally different to me if it's just tommy that's gay, if it's carol that's the lesbian, if they're both some flavor of fruity, or if neither of them are.)

if i sat here and went through each slightly different future i imagine for them we'd be here forever fkdljgfd sooooo for now i will just tell you about my personal favorite.

first, a little backstory because i think it's important to know where they came from to know why they are the way they are because that ultimately drives where they end up:

i personally like to think that tommy hagan comes from a big family - a big family of all girls, too. he's one of five, the middle child, with two older sisters and two younger sisters. i also like to think that his mom is a single mother - and when it comes to his dad, my hc isn't super nailed down for him. i do think he was there when tommy was younger, but his father left, maybe around when tommy was nine? ten? but either, his dad was cheating on his mom and ended up leaving her (and their kids) to be with this other woman (maybe because SHE got pregnant?) OR tommy's dad hit his mom, and that went on for long enough until she finally stood up and kicked him out. out of those two options though, i like to lean towards the first one, beeeeecaaaause it makes tommy's motivations and behaviors THAT much jucier sdlkfds. BECAUSE combine tommy's middle-child-syndrome with this early abandonment and of COURSE he's got issues. OF COURSE he has to find every way to get attention because he doesn't get enough of it at home and OF COURSE he gets upset and lashes out when people he's close to leave him because he's got abandonment issues (so when steve, his friend, his best friend, suddenly drops him and carol, of course tommy gets upset). also, random tidbit that didn't really fit in anywhere else dkfls but i think i mentioned it in my response on that initial post that started all this but i DO think tommy is an angry guy. BUT i do not think that manifests in the same way as it would for a lot of other guys. he's NOT outwardly angry all the time, he's NOT always looking to pick a fight, he's NOT a physically violent guy. i think his anger stems from very specific circumstances - i.e. circumstances where his control is slipping - and while he doesn't resort to physical violence (aside from maybe a shove here or there, because that's the most we ever see onscreen in a moment when he is genuinely upset and angry), he lashes out. verbally. he says MEAN shit - and because he's friends with carol, his tongue has sharpened over the years (and also, growing up with all sisters means he's well accustomed to the ways of female warfare lol - aka the vicious mind games and cruelty of the tongue that is more common than physical violence). SO that means he knows how to go for the jugular with just his words, and that, sometimes, can be even worse than a punch to the nose.

carol, on the other hand, i like to think also comes from a single mother household, but unlike tommy, she is an only child. i like to think that she and her mom moved to hawkins when she was... maybe 12 or 13, so middle school age. she wasn't super popular at her old school, is the thing. i don't think she was necessarily super bullied or anything, but she didn't really have a lot of friends and she probably didn't get a lot of attention either. so when she comes to hawkins, she sees it as a chance to reinvent herself. she doesn't let herself fall into that new girl trap, and she's outspoken from the get go - perhaps a little to her own detriment, because while she does make friends, they ALSO scares a lot of people off because of how cold she seems (which is ENTIRELY a self-preservation thing for her). and then somehow, someway she catches the attention of steve harrington. steve harrington, who, at this point, is already well on his way to being the golden boy King Steve that we see in high school. and she clings to that, because that's her ticket to the top. i think maybe she gets a little crush on steve at first - except it isn't actually a crush. she just likes what he can offer her - the popularity, the attention, the feeling of being needed, and she misreads that as having a crush on him. (and if you subscribe to the carol is a lesbian hc, which i sometimes do! this "crush" would be FULLY because that's what's expected of her; all the other girls like steve, all the other girls think he's hot and awesome and perfect, so that must mean she should to, right? - but that's a different future route that i'm not taking here so. putting this back on the shelf for now lol).

ANYWAYS. yeah so carol gets folded into steve and tommy's mix. she befriends them, she gets close with them, they become a trio. inseparable.

tommy and steve have been friends since grade school. maybe they were sat next to each other because their last names both start with H, maybe even as a small child steve already has lots of friends because he's nice and he shares his toys and he's got kids coming up to him all the time asking him if he wants to play and he always says yes. but then one day it's steve that's toddling up to tommy and asking him if he wants to play. steve chooses tommy. and the rest is history. and as they grow up, steve starts growing into his looks and he gets good at sports and joins all the teams and he excels, so he's got people fawning over him and flocking towards him for any sliver of attention he's willing to give them. but at the end of the day it's tommy that gets steve's full attention. it's tommy that steve tells everything to, it's tommy that knows steve best, it's tommy who steve trusts, it's tommy who is steve's best friend. and tommy REVELS in that. it's that attention he's been craving his whole life. this, naturally, leads to tommy feeling possessive over steve. and he doesn't realize that this possessiveness is a little more deeply rooted than just wanting to keep steve's friendship until steve starts to look at girls.

the first time tommy sees steve with a pretty girl on his arm, he gets this sick, curdled, twisting feeling in his gut. at first he thinks it's because he's jealous of steve. jealous that he has a date and tommy doesn't. but when steve comes back and tells tommy that it didn't work out, tommy gets this relief that floods through tommy. he doesn't really understand it at first, and definitely doesn't examine it too closely either, just sort of shoves it down deep and doesn't worry about it. but then steve finds another girl, and this time things DO go well, and, naturally, as steve's best friend, tommy becomes the person that steve tells everything to. he tells tommy all about the dates, all about the kisses he shares with these girls, all about when things go a little further... tommy listens, because of course he does, but the whole time he's thinking all these horrible thoughts about the girl and that ugly feeling is back knotting up his insides. and omg when steve tells tommy about losing his virginity - OH BOY. he goes into detail, because that's what teenage boys do, and tommy listens but he's sitting there with this whole STORM of emotions swirling through his head - the twisted need to know more, the urge to scream at steve to shut up, disgust because he doesn't want to think about steve with someone else, turned on because its steve talking about having sex, deep shame because hes forced to face the fact that he's wishing it was him with steve instead of that girl. this, perhaps, is even the first time tommy is like. FULLY faced with the true nature of his feelings, the ones he's been shoving away and ignoring this whole time.

i think tommy struggles with it. being gay (which he refuses to consider himself) is obviously not accepted in that time period. and he knows he'd get absolutely pummeled if anyone caught wind that he'd even thought about another boy like that. whiiiich is where carol comes in.

i think at this point tommy is probably already with carol - when steve started showing his interest in girls, tommy didn't want to get left in the dust, so he tried to find himself a girlfriend too, and it just so happened that carol was right there and it was so easy because carol was just so easy (WOMP). i like to think that maybe they started as a hookup. tommy wanted to lose his virginity, and carol was right there, and well, there were rumors about her, and all tommy had to do was ask, and she said yes, and then it sort of snowballs from there because (even though their first time was probably fumbling and not actually the greatest overall, tommy still liked it, and if he liked sex with a girl there's no way he's gay, right?) then he asks her out and she says yes again, and they start this relationship that maybe didn't really stem from any true feelings at first, but like they sort of caught the feelings along the way, like they learned to love each other along the way.

and the thing is - i do genuinely think that tommy and carol loved each other. i do. i don't think that their relationship wasn't real, even if tommy is actually gay. i think they had a lot of fun together, and i think that the feelings were there. they just weren't enough. because despite things going pretty well with carol, tommy was still thinking about steve. he was still actively having those feelings even while with carol. (which - maybe he was just projecting those feelings onto carol.) regardless, though, there is a love that exists between tommy and carol - i just think that over time it morphs into something different than what they both initially thought it was.

NOW. when it comes to their future (WHICH HELLO THIS IS WHAT YOUR ASK WAS ABOUT AND IM ONLY JUST NOW GETTING TO IT SKFJDS S O R R Y AND THANK YOU FOR STICKING WITH ME THROUGH ALL OF ^^^ THAT PREAMBLE SKDJFL)

since we are talking about my favorite potential future for them, it looks a little something like this:

they stay together. all through high school. when steve leaves them, things get a little rocky between tommy and carol, because steve was the glue that held them together, ultimately. but they both sort of realize that they're all each other has left, now that steve's gone, so they temper things. they marry out of high school - or that's when tommy proposes anyways, because tommy's barely three quarters of the way through his first year of community college when there's a pregnancy scare (which - honestly, everyone's surprised that didn't happen earlier) but yeah, carol's late, and when she pees on the stick it's positive. when she tells tommy, tommy proposes - because that's the right thing to do. he's not going to ditch her, he's not going to make her do that on her own. carol says yes, because what other option does she have here? but when they actually go to the doctor about it, they find out that the test was a false positive; carol is not pregnant. they stay engaged though, carol still wore her ring, and tommy stayed with carol, and neither one of them said anything about it. they followed through with it three years later after tommy graduated with a business degree and a cushy job at carol's dad's company.

at this point, they've known each other for almost a decade, and they've been together for most of it. so they know each other pretty well. which means - carol knows about tommy's... interests. she's fully aware. has been since high school, actually. she clocked tommy's crush on steve reeeeal quick, and actually confronted him about it once - which forced tommy into a corner and when he'd tried to deny it she's just scoffed and told him to quit fucking hiding from it. and he did. he'd admitted it to her, which was still difficult for him, but he'd gotten a bit better about admitting it to himself over the years. and in response to it, carol told him she didn't care.

which was really the best god damn way it could've gone. she told tommy that she didn't care that he gets off to guys, that she didn't care that he thinks about them, that he wants them. in fact, she told tommy that she didn't even care if he wanted to fuck around with them on the side. so long as he came back to her in the end, she didn't care.

and so, most nights tommy will slip off his wedding ring, he'll make the drive to whatever innocuous city is far enough away that he wont run into anyone he knows, and he'll seek out the company of other men. and when he's had his fill for the night, when he's satisfied that itch, he'll drive back to hawkins, and he'll try to be quiet as he enters the house and changes into his pajamas, and then he'll slide into bed next to carol and he'll go to sleep.

it's... it sounds like a pretty miserable existence, the two of them trapped in this seemingly unhappy marriage. but it's actually not. not really. it works for them. like i said before, they do love each other. it's just not that same sort of love that was there when they were kids, when they first started out. it's changed, it's morphed, it's turned into something more familial, rather than romantic.

maybe one day they will finally move out of hawkins. maybe that will be the beginning of the end. maybe once they're out from underneath the thumb of the town they grew up in, out from underneath the pressure of playing the expected role for all the people they knew there, they can start to live their own lives. maybe they'll finally get a divorce. maybe tommy will finally outwardly acknowledge his sexuality. maybe carol will finally find something she's good at and thrive with it. maybe maybe maybe.
