Today marks the 3rd anniversary of my fic The Infinity Cube. I can still remember posting the first chapter, hoping at least one person out there liked it, and I can still remember how it felt to reach the end, a feat that wouldn't have been possible without the support of so many kind souls 💗 I wanted to make something for the occasion and having seen so many amazing web weavings out there, I thought I'd give it my best shot 😊

i'm on the train and bored and still have an hour to go, so TIME TO RANT ✨️
and i'm choosing to make a list of bttf scenes i would have done differently/things i would have added because i like disagreeing with bob gale as if i owned this franchise
this is maybe an unnecessary change, but personally, i would have preferred if there were more instances of marty trying to warn doc about his death in part 1. we see it when doc demonstrates the model and then later twice on november 12 (before he writes the letter and then before marty has to leave), but i feel like it would have been more emotionally impactful if he had tried it more than that and only at the very end given up and written that letter.
SHOW DOC PLAY SAX. LIKE BRO. they could have had a concert 😭 imagine doc crashing the dance and playing sax with marty on stage (take this bullet point with a grain of salt, i'm only half serious. but still seeing doc play sax would have been badass)
the most obvious point of all obvious points, add the goddamn lone pine mall hug. the entire fandom agrees it's canon, and i remember a post going around speculating that they did indeed record a hug and keep the secret footage somewhere at universal lmao. but all jokes aside, this hug was SO necessary. every sane person would be waiting for it when watching the movie. marty is literally on the ground, bawling his eyes out, thinking his friend is gone, and us heartbroken audience members don't even get a hug to soothe our souls. i haven't paid much mind to doc and marty's relationship when i first watched bttf, but even past me was expecting a hug. good thing bobby fixed it in the musical
MORE JENNIFER. don't knock that girl out for 75% of the movie, please. she deserved better, and i wish bttf 2 would have put more emphasis on her as a character and how she's like and stuff. i hate to see it, but she's such a surface character that we barely know anything about (in my opinion), and that's just sad. she could very well have gone to the cafe 80s with marty and kept him grounded and stuff.
honestly, i maybe even would have kept that deleted 1985a scene with dave. we don't get to see marty's siblings at all in that timeline aside from a mention from biff, and it would have been interesting to see.
this is quite a jump in time, but i wish bob gale would have expanded on the scene in bttf 3 in which doc tells marty that he wants to stay behind in 1885 because of clara. this might be my fanfic brain speaking, but i see so much conflict potential. it would have been wild to see doc and marty argue, maybe even fight for the first time in the trilogy, and picture the emotional turmoil both of them were going through. if i had been marty, i would have snapped, not gonna lie. like, yeah, i get that doc found the love of his life but after all the lectures he'd given marty and after all those times marty was willing to rip apart the fabric of time just to keep doc alive, that man just goes "sorry marty, i met a woman i fell in love with, thanks for saving my life so i can live it out HERE. you go back home and idk clean my lab" >:(. this will forever be a pet peeve hahahaha
WHY does doc just FLY OFF on that DAMN TRAIN? i have to admit, it is an epic ending and feels sort of celebratory, but how can he say that he had to get his dog BEFORE even MENTIONING marty, giving him a photo, shake his hand as if they were work colleagues and nothing more, and then LEAVE? WHAT??? at least talk to him for a bit longer, tell your best friend where you've been, whether he will see you again and that you cherish him for god's sake. if you already had to give him false hopes by getting on the train only to fly off on the hoverboard later 🙄

Okay, but what if there was a show about the Ministry, like Keeping Up with The Kardashians style, and the staff needed to get to know Papas and Sister better.
Staff: So... Can you tell us a little bit more about yourselves, we didn't get a chance to, you know, talk to y'all much.
Nihil: I can play sax.
Sister: I can fuck up a limitless number of cars.
Staff, bewildered: Well that's... Impressive. You... You have a lot in common, that's sweet.
Secondo: I can harvest crops of fields that others have plowed.
Staff: Oh so you're a farmer? Terrific!
Secondo, winking: Well... If you wanna call it that...
Copia: I can ride a tricycle.
Staff: Oh, lovely! How old are you?
Copia: 54!
Staff, under their breath, looking away awkwardly: The fuck kinda thing we've just got into...
Terzo, smirking: I-
Nihil, interrupting him instantly, staring into his soul: Don't you dare.
Terzo: Fuck off, didn't even say anything yet! I can play kazoo.
Staff: Great! This show needs more music!
Nihil, visibly relaxed: Thank Satan...
Terzo: Did you really think that's all? Jokes on you, I can also take my head off.
Nihil: Shit!
Staff, shocked: Wh... As in... Like metaphorically speaking?
Terzo: Wanna see and decide for yourselves?
Staff: Is that a challenge?
Terzo: Is it accepted?
Staff: W... well...
Primo, barging in: Guys, is that a fucking talent show or?.. I didn't get the memo, sorry.
Staff, still shocked: Oh fuck is that a mask???
Primo: Well hello to you too, I guess! That's my face, what do you mean?
Staff: *faints*
Nihil: We nailed it, guys! The show is gonna be a success!

Invisible Bonds: The Power of Destiny
Author's Note: This fanfic contains possible strong language and explores themes of unconventional love. The relationship between the protagonists will be handled with sensitivity, without explicit scenes.
chapter four chapter six

Chapter Five
You and Jungkook have been in his car for about thirty minutes. You're afraid, you don't know how this meeting between friends will go, considering that you and Jungkook are soulmates. He's so calm, driving the car with one hand and holding your hand with the other. Bonding makes us more likely to hold on to each other, so the feeling of holding Jungkook's hand now is the same to cover yourself with a warm blanket in winter. You're happy to be with him even though you weren't confident. Your friends don't know about your crush on Taehyung or how you wanting to grab Jungkook because of the of your connection. For a moment, your nervousness about the situation surpasses the sensations, and Jungkook seems to sense it.
"You know our friends already know me, right?" Jungkook says patiently as he drives.
You sigh – how will you explain that your nervousness goes beyond our friends, as you're emotionally confused, and this will be the first time you're acknowledging your soulmate – without sounding like you're scared.
"It's not that... they know us individually. Not as soulmates, and I never really thought you'd show up, so I kind of gave the impression that I'd never be with someone who has a full understanding of everything going on with me." You speak so quickly that you're surprised Jungkook managed to keep up with your train of thought.
"I don't have that much understanding yet. I haven't figured out how much you liked Taehyung before all this happened, don't even know if I should be concerned." Jungkook says, and you look at him. You want to meet his eyes, see if this makes him uncomfortable. You stare at him.
"It's been a while since I've been attracted to Taehyung, and that's all I'll say on the matter. He's marrying his soulmate, and I have you." You speak as if it's that simple, trying to deceive your own heart.
"Am I your consolation prize, then? If you can't have him, I'll do?" Jungkook speaks seriously, and you become concerned that you may have hurt him.
"It's not like that. You're my destiny, and I'm just saying I won't run away from my destiny. You're not a second choice." Jungkook parks the car in front of Hoseok's house, and it seems like all his good humor has vanished.
"Don't try to fool me; I know I'm currently one of the reasons for your unhappiness." Jungkook says as he lets go of your hand. It causes an inexplicable ache in your heart. You decide to unbuckle your seatbelt and climb onto Jungkook's lap.
"You have unrestricted access to my feelings, you know better than anyone that I'm not unhappy. I want to explore this soul connection with you. So, no..." You say all this while holding Jungkook's face between your hands. Without self-control, he unbuckles his own seatbelt and pulls you closer, holding onto your waist. You look at him, wanting him to know that you enjoy being close to him. So, you gently bring your lips closer to his.
"You don't want to give me the impression that every argument we have is going to end with you on top of me." Jungkook says in an amused tone and then kisses you as if he wants to sink into you. You, again, kiss him lightly because you know very well what this could lead you to.
"Jungkook stop being so naughty, can't you see I'm trying to create a romantic atmosphere?" You say, lightly hitting Jungkook's arm. He smiles, looking happy. He looks so happy that you feel a great comfort inside your heart.
"Better than looking at you is seeing the first snow together as a couple." Jungkook says, a warm smile on his face.
"How do you know it's going to snow?" You ask, setting aside the fact that he referred to you two as a couple.
"If you look outside now you'll notice it's snowing." Jungkook says pointing to the window. It really is snowing, I bet the purpose of this gathering of friends is to watch this moment with them but now I just want to stay here, with him.
"Do you want to go back to your place and cuddle?" Jungkook asks, gently brushing his nose against yours. You run your fingers through his hair, feeling extremely tempted to accept his proposition.
"As romantic as that sounds, our first impression as a couple can't be lovebirds who can't be apart. Plus, you got a great pie for us to share with everyone." You say, kissing the corner of Jungkook's mouth, feeling less and less inclined to leave his lap.
He ends up agreeing with you, and you open the car door. At that moment, the least expected thing happens. Taehyung is passing right by Jungkook's car and seems surprised to see you. I mean, he's seeing you on someone's lap for the first time.
"It's not what you're thinking..." You say, trying to get out of Jungkook's lap, who, by the way, is enjoying watching you struggle to get back to the passenger seat and finally leave the car.
"I highly doubt you know what I'm thinking, Y/N." Taehyung says with a dry tone. His expression is very serious, which catches you off guard.
"If you weren't committed, I'd think you got jealous, Taehyung." Jungkook says as he gets out of the car after grabbing the pie from the back seat. You lean against the front of the car, observing Taehyung and Jungkook.
"I was just taken by surprise. Until a few hours ago, you two struggled to accept all this, and now you're cuddling in the parking lot." Taehyung comments. This comment has a hint of indignation, or even repressed anger.
"I'm sure you've experienced that feeling before, especially since Haewon and you used to be inseparable. But we promise to behave." Jungkook adds, a mischievous glint in his eyes. Jungkook passes one of his hands around my waist and you with your eyes half closed look at him.
"I'm glad you guys are getting along. It just doesn't seem like you..." Taehyung says, definitely disappointed — you can't quite understand; what could be the reason for him to act this way?
"Just like you turned into a new person when you met Haewon. I guess it's part of the soulmate package." You point out the hypocrisy that is, precisely Taehyung telling you this.
"Do you guys want a moment alone?" Jungkook asks, you don’t know whether to be mocking or genuinely.
"I think this is not the right time to judge those who behave differently while they are romantically involved with another person." You say trying to end the conversation.
"Let's head to our friend gathering then, and maybe we can talk about this later, Y/N." Taehyung suggests. Not quite sure how to respond, you nod and take the pie from Jungkook's hand. He kisses your cheek and holds your free hand. Taehyung watches silently, and the three of you make your way to Hoseok's apartment.

Them Changes
I’ve had massive brainrot for this song and well, this popped out
Pairing: scaramouche x gn!reader
Warnings: angst, song fic, no comfort, spoilers for his story, it’s just sad alright
Word count: 1.2K
Italics indicate the past, color is lyrics
Tumblr media
The crowd inside the dingy bar murmurs, creating a full roar of sound as the band prepares their next song. The young man at the mic hastily wraps a hand around it and takes a deep breath.
“This is a song I recently wrote.” His eyes stay on the ground underneath him as his words echo softly in the air. “I didn’t think I’d ever experience this but, please enjoy.”
Soft purple eyes cue the drummer to come in with the soulful introduction. The crowd starts to bop and whoop along with the rhythm as soon as the bass and guitar come in soon after. His fingers fiddle and sweat over the keyboard in front of him, nerves suddenly hitting him. The singer breathes before singing the first line, thinking back to when he brought up the song and inspiration to the group.
“Scara, are you sure? This seems really, uh, personal.”
Scaramouche rolls his eyes and snatches the music away from usual lead singer and guitarist Childe, who giggles at the tsundere act. “I’m just saying, we can still play it.” The red head eyes the music a little longer and furrows his eyebrows. “This is pretty difficult and the harmonies are pretty intricate,” he comments. “You wanna do this at the next show?” He passes the music over to Kaeya, another guitarist and vocalist as he smirks at it.
“Of course I wanna do it. I don’t typically write but this just..came to me.”
The first words flow out of his mouth like butter and immediately entice the audience.
“Nobody move, there’s blood on the floor
“And I can’t find my heart”
Never in his life had he ever wanted to experience the pain of heartache. After thinking for years that he was a heartless robot, you had come along and completely turned his world upside down. Abandoned by everyone he cared for most in his life, Scaramouche didn’t think he would find someone like that again. That was until he met you. It was as if whatever was missing had been filled by your presence and he’d be damned if he let you go.
“Where did it go?
“Did I leave it in the cold?
“So please give it back,
“Cause it’s not yours to take”
“Hey Kuni?”
Lilac irises look up at you as the man in your arms kisses your neck. “Yeah?”
“I really do love you. I hope you know I’m not kidding.”
He pouts and snuggles closer into you, mumbling into your soft skin. “I’m sorry I didn’t quite catch that. You’re gonna have to speak up, dear.”
He grumbles at your giggle and captures your lips in a sweet kiss. “I said I love you too. Idiot.”
You smile at him and rub at his arm. “I’m not gonna leave, I promise. I have no intention of letting you go, okay?”
He squeezes your hand and rests his forehead against yours.
“Yeah yeah, you’re not allowed to.”
“It must’ve fell when I lost my mind
“Deep in the cut, drowning in its pain
“Somebody help, cause I can’t find my way
“Nobody move, nobody move”
His hands fly over and across the keyboard playing beautiful and complex arpeggios as he sings with his band mates. Eyes still shut from memories and getting lost in the moment, the sax coming in wakes him from his stupor. Slowly scanning the crowd, he finally spots you in the audience. The expression on your face is exactly what he wanted. He knows that you know this song is about you. A weird sense of pride overcomes him as a single tear falls from your eye the longer you keep eye contact with the man on stage. Both of your hearts lurch for each other but you can’t do that. Neither of you can. You grip at your chest as he keeps singing, a little more intensely. And as you listen, you truly start to understand the depth of your actions.
“Somebody tell me how I’m supposed to feel
“When I’m sitting here, knowing this ain’t real
“Why in the world would I give my heart to you?
“Just to watch you throw it in the trash
You really did love him. With all of your heart you loved him. But you couldn’t help but feel like you weren’t right for him. Something about you wasn’t right or was holding him back. You could sense it. Of course you loved seeing him play but seeing him now on the stage is the Scaramouche you knew had always been there. He had confided in you about his mother and past friends and that struck a chord with you. Although he had developed into a better person after those unfortunate times, maybe that’s what needed to happen?
You had always refused to believe you were the problem and so you went against his wishes and spoke to his mother. She seemed nice enough and easy to talk to but the lack of love in her voice and lifeless eyes told you everything you needed to know. She had always assumed that Scaramouche was better off alone, but you felt the opposite. He needed those who loved him in his corner and he lost all of them. His mother didn’t take that too lightly and forced you away from her abode, with the threat to leave her son.
You thought the two of you were unbreakable. The way he yelled at you upon your confession of visiting his mother without his consent left you in tears. Your biggest fight to date and it left the both of you in shambles. However, it left the both of you stronger and so you worked out the issues and got back together. His heart appeared to be stronger than ever.
“I have this song I wanna write, but I’m not sure what I want it to be about. Do you wanna hear it?”
You recognize the music immediately as the song he wanted to write about your love and you forget to breathe. There’s no one else in the venue and it’s just the two of you, in his studio as he plays you the music. You want to hold him, you want to kiss him.
But you gave up that right when his mother forced you out of his life.
“I’ve been traveling so long I don’t think I can hold on
“Where were you when I needed you the most?
“Now I’m sitting here with a black hole in my chest
“A heartless, broken mess
He didn’t dare look out into the audience, knowing that you’d be crying and he couldn’t bear to see your face covered in tears. He secretly wanted the satisfaction of breaking your heart like you did to him, but he let out his frustrations by soloing over the end with Kazuha on the saxophone. The crowd roars in applause and it seems that you have dispersed into the crowd. Where his heart is supposed to be, skips a beat at knowing you’re also hurting. He turns away from the crowd and walks off stage to let out his angry tears at the one person who loved him for all that he is and still had to abandon him. He’s thankful for his band, he muses.
But he sees your tear stained face staring at him and all his anger and resolve disappears.

We watched Civil War early on in the month and although some of the camera stuff wasn't on (watching any photography-focused movie with a person who was a photojournalist for over a decade, when oneself also has decades of photography experience is like watching VH1 Pop Up Video) the music was a fun mix, and reminded me how much I love the band Suicide, and the use of 'Rocket USA' was solid.
Speaking of music from movies, 'Sara Loves Her Juicy Fruit' has been on my monthly playlists before and is from Creep 2. It came up naturally in a suggested playlist and I dug it and couldn't figure out why more of this "Albert Natural" band wasn't out there then learned it was just a movie-only song very much riffing on like, Phish (though my partner clarifies it really is more in the style of Umphrey's McGee).
Realising there are a lot of covers in this one.
Related media to some of the songs:
We all know 'Baker Street' but have you heard the demo, which has guitar in place of sax? It's got a different, but also very good, vibe. Not as sad, more dreamy, I guess?
The_miracle_aligner overall has many classic language covers of songs that bop, but this cover of 'All Star' also I think is one of those covers that helps underline how genuinely a bop a song is. I've linked the orchestral version by Eric E. Britt before, I'm sure.
Hey, you know how I first heard The Polyphonic Spree? In a flash game called The Quest For The Rest, by Amanita Design. The first scene of it is thankfully archived on Archive dot org, and it was so wild to play it um, literally 20 years later.
Anyway here's a link to August's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.
And embedded, if you like that:
'A Message to You Rudy - 2015 Remaster' - The Specials
'Come On Let's Go' - Broadcast
'King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1' - Neutral Milk Hotel
'Owner of a Lonely Heart' - Yes
'Everybody's Gotta Live' - Love
'Sara Loves Her Juicy Fruit' - Albert Natural
'Treat Me Right' - Norma Tanega
'Bone' - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
'Hopscotch' - Pinc Louds
'The Secret To Life' - FIZZ
'Pure' - The Lightning Seeds
'All Star in Classical Latin' - The_miracle_aligner
'A Beautiful Morning - Single Version' - The Rascals
'Baker Street' - Gerry Rafferty
'This Is Gonna Hurt' - Dirty Nice
'Water Underground' - Real Estate
'Repetition Kills You' - The Black Ghosts
'Section 12 - Hold Me Now' - The Polyphonic Spree

Reflections: Cillian Murphy’s Limited Edition
Season 3, episode 9
✨the penultimate episode✨
———————————————————————
*I am a music prof (predominantly classical vocalist), and I LOVE listening to Cillian’s music choices! That being said, sometimes I won’t like a song simply because of a vocalist (it’s a professional hazard - sorry!) 👩‍🏫
** The following are my own observations/opinions. We may not agree, and that’s ok! That’s what makes music fun! 😊
*** I wouldn’t say I’m well-versed in Cillian’s music preferences, but I do enjoy them (for the most part). I always wind up adding to my own playlists after listening to Cillian’s recommendations.
———————————————————————
I apologize in advance for the following “tired teacher” rambling 🙃
🎵Set 1 (Westward Bound - Music for the Sun King)
Westward Bound: nice, calm, and atmospheric. This is what he should put at the *end* to help you fall asleep 😴
Saturday Sun: a little soulful, a little jazzy, and very much perfect for the weekend. 😎
Music for the Sun King: it does have a reminiscent vibe of *the* “Here Comes the Sun King” by the Beatles, and I get that with the lower instruments. I like how this continually evolves.
🎤Talking Break
How did this (penultimate Ep) happen???
“Pepper in some highly uninteresting, obtuse facts”
🎵Set 2 (Southern Man)
Southern Man: oooh - I love her voice!!!
🎤Talking Break
“A tiny, tiny little piece”
🎵Set 3 (Trees Against the Sky -
Trees Against the Sky: what a fun, polyphonic/contrapuntal song!!!!! I love it!!
Aliante giallo.pt. 2: I’m sure it’s instrumentation, but I feel like I’m on vacation on the Mediterranean. 😎
Idag: while there’s nothing too shocking in terms of construction, this is just an enjoyable song!
🎤Talking Break
Cool that there’s Swedish music 👍
Cillian… your Italian needs some work 😬
I wanna explore more of Alessandroni’s work
It kinda bothers me that he doesn’t verify these facts 😅 I’m sorry - academia has ruined me.
I promise I thought that was my phone alarm going off! 😂😂😂😂
🎵Set 4 (heat on, lips on - Blood)
Heat on, lips on: so it’s interesting how many songs make use of “noise-like sounds” - that was a whole movement back in the ‘50s, and it was certainly an acquired taste. Nice that it’s seen in more than just film music or experimental music.
Zarubezh: is it strange to say this sounds like Lo-if meets urban soundscape meets studio vocals session? 🤔
Blood: such a wide variety of timbre - you’ve got mellow to bright represented!
🎤Talking Break
Interesting how it samples politicians. Not uncommon, but always interesting.
A poem!
Sketch IV_II: definitely get why it’s a “sketch”, as well as why it’s used as atmospheric sound to the poem.
Cillian loves a good pop song - noted!
And I guess his boys do, too!
🎵Set 5 (Someday - How Do I Know)
Someday: I feel like this song is used in so many ads 😅 I can’t disconnect this song from consumerism.
How Do I Know: this is a good pop song! Which is so funny because, once again, it’s a fairly monotone vocal line. The driving rhythms in the instruments is really what sells this.
🎤Talking Break
It’s cool that he knows the producers as well. I always forget about the producers, and I definitely shouldn’t.
🎵Set 6 (Won’t Give You Up - Rocket USA)
Won’t Give You Up: this is groovy in all the best ways. 😎 fun sounds, fun harmonies. And it’s also got a sax! 😂
CORRECT. nerves are important for performance! BE NERVOUS IF YOU’RE NOT NERVOUS!!!
Rocket USA: speaking of nervous, this makes me feel anxious with this background 😳
🎤Talking Break
Cillian’s performance nerves are backwards.
“But it ain’t”
🎵Set 7 (Twist - Dollars and Cents)
Twist: the popping sound kinda hurts my ears, but I also kinda love this. It has a good bit of layering going on, and it’s well-done. All the elements have a similar timbre, so the sonic construction really works here.
Dollars and Cents: why does this have a bossa nova feel to it??? Lots of interesting instances of dissonance/failure to resolve.
🎤Talking Break
Ask a reasonable question!
I’m with Sydney - the idents need an album.
“EP of dismal sounds”
“If ident mind” - omg is this a dad joke or just a dad pun? 😂
🎵Set 8 (Put It On - Holly Holy)
Put It On: I like this!! And I don’t think I realized it before, but Cillian must like sax AND island music.
Ain’t No Love: ooh this feels more early rock, but not! And I love larger vocal groups - they are so fun!
Morning Sun: a strange transition, but this is nice. It reminds me of “House of the Rising Sun” in a way because of the melodic contour. Large leap up, then small intervals back down.
Holly Holy: this sounds like something George Harrison would like.
🎤Talking Break
There’s an album called Clint Eastwood?!
Holly Holy by Neil Diamond. This is starting to make sense.
We’ve got Yorkshire Man!
I’m glad he explained sheep counting.
🎵Set 9 (Old Molly Metcalfe)
Old Molly Metfalfe: the descending ostinatos (mimicking the song proper) are intriguing, mysterious, and annoying. 😅 I do appreciate that he’s singing a cappella, but he goes under the pitch a little bit, particularly on the descending lines. Whoops - my voice teacher is showing. 🙃
🎤Talking Break
Oohhhh Catalonia…
🎵Set 10 (Paradís - Hyperballad)
Paradís: this feels like it has some modal construction rather than straight major/minor. And polyrhythms - y’all know that’s one of my favorite things!
Hyperballad: Björk is back! Idk if I said this before, but her vocal line is almost chant-like interspersed with repeated motifs.
🎤Talking Break
Nice… archive!
I’ve never heard Kate Bush’s speaking voice, and to everyone’s shock and surprise, it’s a lot like her singing voice!
🎵Set 11 (The Big Sky -
The Big Sky: this is a “pump you up” song - definitely gets you ready for the day! This is too energetic for a nighttime playlist, Cillian! 😂😂
🎤Talking Break
“It’s a total coincidence”
Ok, voice nerd here, but I love hearing him drop into vocal fry. That being said, it is a more taxing way to speak, so please use wisely. 😊
🎵Set 12 (The Storm -
The Storm (01-16-52): OK BUT YES TO EVERYTHING I AM IN LOVE 😍😍😍 It’s big band jazz meets city blues meets cool sound effects✨fave song of the episode✨
Bad Luck and Trouble (49-50): ok, did I speak too soon??? This is country blues (different from city blues because it’s a male vocalist and more rural sounding). ✨This might tie for favorite song✨
🎤Talking Break
Interesting final selections!
Just one more 😢
“Mind yourselves”
🎵Set 13 (Journey in Satchidananda -
Journey in Satchidananda: harp and sax should play together more often, that’s all I gotta say! Also, more music needs sitar. Way to go, this is 🔥🔥🔥
Twenty Trees: orchestral, percussive, and electric. The pulsing is a little strange, but I like this.
———————————————————————
Phew! Finally got this written! One more to go - I have mixed feelings about that, but onward we must!

Listed: Kid Millions and Sarah Bernstein
Tumblr media
Kid Millions and Sarah Bernstein both have long CVs in experimental music, Millions as the drummer for Oneida and Man Forever and Bernstein as an avant garde composer and performer with the VEER Quartet, the avant-jazz Sarah Bernstein Quartet, and solo as Exolinger. They’ve been improvising together for roughly a decade, building mesmerizing sonic architectures out of free-form drumming, wild violin pyrotechnics and cryptic spoken word. Of their latest, Live at Forest Park, Margaret Welsh writes, “Bernstein and Colpitts weave sound together into an unsettling fever dream-like warp, growing larger and smaller. All you can do is lay back and surrender to the waves.” Here are some things that inspire the two.
Kid Millions
Billy Harper Quintet — In Europe (Soul Note)
youtube
While I admire and enjoy all of the Quintet albums I’ve heard, this particular one captures something ineffable and transcendent. The Quintet’s personnel changes throughout Harper’s career but this particular session has the tunes, the passion, the reaching and the constant surprises that make it my most listened to album in the last ten years. Fred Hersch is especially sympathetic and powerful on this too. I really want to see this group ASAP. Billy Harper is still playing!
Pete La Roca — Basra (Blue Note)
youtube
La Roca is a drummer who is unappreciated but his playing and compositions stand out. This album gets the slight nod over the legendary Turkish Women at the Bath because it was recorded well. He’s in the same league as Elvin and also wrote some incredible tunes.
George Adams & Don Pullen Quartet — City Gates (Timeless) (but any record is cool)
youtube
I’m leaning on big tenor sounds these days, and George Adams stands in the same universe as Billy Harper because he plays the range of the instrument — there are gorgeous melodies set alongside blistering free blasts. Don Pullen is incredible as well. Near the end of his life he started to write more songs with hooks, but he shreds like Cecil Taylor. I’m digging the stuff that straddles the line between songs and free these days.
Henry Threadgill with Brent Hayes Edwards — Easily Slip Into Another World (memoir)
Tumblr media
This is a brand-new book, and I’m finding lots of inspiration and great advice within the pages. His discussion about how young musicians need to find their way within the tradition, among their peers, and on their own terms applies to all traditions, rock included. In order to really engage with the music, you have to play all the time, with other people. You have to play covers, and you have to play in front of audiences. And you need to be fired. I certainly have!
Marcus Gilmore
youtube
Such an incredible, deep, drummer. You should go see him ASAP!
Sarah Bernstein
Music/poetry films I like:
When It Rains — Charles Burnett (1995)
youtube
Charles Burnett’s work speaks to me as a whole. The films I’ve seen slip into a continuous flow of poetic story/documentary. When It Rains is a 13-minute short film that takes place on a festive New Years Day, but January’s rent needs to be paid. Musicians are among the characters and sound, and it plays like a jazz improvisation. A particular highlight is seeing instrument-maker Juno Lewis on-screen playing his double bell trumpet. The story’s ending will have vinyl collectors smiling.
The Connection — Shirley Clarke (1961)
youtube
Before discovering this movie, I knew director Shirley Clarke from her later film "Ornette: Made in America," also a must-see. The Connection is a film version of Jack Gelber’s play for the burgeoning Living Theatre. Most of the actors from the stage play, and all the musicians, are also in the film. The band is swinging: Freddie Redd composer/pianist, Jackie McLean alto sax, Michael Mattos bass, Larry Ritchie drums. The musicians also act in the story, and even the turntable — playing Charlie Parker’s Marmaduke — provides a key recurring motif in the film.
Poetry In Motion — Ron Mann (1982)
vimeo
Poetry in Motion, By Ron Mann from bob stein on Vimeo.
The other movies on this list are ones I’ve seen relatively recently, but Poetry In Motion I watched in an art-house cinema as a teenager, and it had a big impact on me. The documentary shows 40 poets and performers, including Jayne Cortez, Dianne Di Prima, Helen Adam, William S. Burroughs, Amiri Baraka, Allen Ginsburg, Jim Carroll, John Cage, Robert Creeley, Miguel Algarin, to name a few! Also check out Ron Mann’s first feature film: Imagine The Sound (1981), a superb profile of Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon and Paul Bley.
Desolation Center — Stuart Swezey (2018)
youtube
The concert footage is so good. Highlights are Einsturzende Neubauten and Survival Research Labs literally blowing up the desert in Joshua Tree. Also Sonic Youth, Minute Men, Swans, all in DIY festivals and shows taking place in outdoor remote locations in 1980’s SoCal.
Amazing Grace — Alan Elliott/Sydney Pollack (2018)
youtube
Aretha Franklin and choir hold a live concert recording session of her gospel album Amazing Grace over two days in 1972. This is not a documentary with talking heads or explanation, rather the action is all in the music and spirit. Aretha Franklin’s genius and deep interaction with the listeners and choir is riveting and inspiring, even more so with repeat viewing.

omg illicit affairs anon here and happy to report how I feel on every taylor song!!! my fav album is evermore so I would die for any song on there and will defend it to my death.
matty is literally who taylor wrote all this songs for wdym?? Harry Styles? never heard of him... style is clearly for Mr. Matthew Timothy Healy and I won't here shit otherwise! I love to live in my delusion and pretend peace is ab me and matty bc he's so famous... no I am not mentally well thanks for asking!!!!
mirrorball? I think it's safe to say I'm a mirrorball stan considering I have a tattoo for it on my ribs... FOLKLORE IS POETRY I LOVE IT (I also rated the whole of folklore and mirrorball is no.3)
my tears ricochet? I CAN GO ANYWHERE I WANT, ANYWHERE I WANT JUST NOT HOME!!! proud owner of an og folklore cardigan here I love my tears ricochet!!!! it's number 6 on my overall folklore rating which sounds low but folklore just has too many bangers you know??
tis the damn season? seeing this on the eras tour set list did send me into cardiac arrest, thank you!!! this is one of those sad bangers that gets me HYPE to feel depressed but slightly jam at the same time. I was prepped to have 0 evermore songs but to have THIS?? I cried watching the live stream at 3am (International swiftie grind)
false god? unlike any other taylor song but it BANGS!!! I want her to play it and john from the 1975 to play all the sax bits ty!! lover is my 3rd favourite album and I haven't been able to listen to it since... the news :(((
I also am a debut stan I am happy to say, people give it wayyyy to much hate!! picture to burn?? should've said no?? I'm only me when I'm with you?? our song?? it's a no skip album and I'll take that to my grave.
overall miss taylor swift deserves every award and I want her and the '75 to stand there and preform their entire discography to me and you in our cottage ty, as payment we will name some cats after them!!
love you bestie <33333
EVERMORE AND SPEAK NOW ARE MY TOP TWO (WITH 1989 and FOLKORE TIED FOR A THIRD). evermore has the worlds best song (champagne problems) and the deluxe tracks???? right where you left me? its time to go? like okay ms. swift...
PLEJDGLDF as a h*rry stan and a 75 stan, my delusional brain goes back and forth through periods of daydreaming about 1989 being the harry album and the matthew Timothy healy love letter. ALSO i am right with you with the whole daydreaming thing. maybe mine is champagne problems being about me and matty and me not being ready for a relationship with him bc i love angst and drama. (i am the drama. also the rumor that went around when it first came out that champagne problems was about justin and selena? that broke me..)
MIRRORBALLLLLLLLLLL SENDS MEEEEEEE FOR A LOOP. its the song i lay in bed to and just stare at the ceiling, literally on my disassociation playlist. (i wish i was joking). and omg.. the tattoo.. its literally on my list of ones i want to get. (besties and twinsies)
me adding u to my rob list bc i longed for a folklore cardigan. ALSO. I GET TTTT IT SO MUCH. folklore is a banging album.
the way i literally threw my phone when she started playing it. i was in SHOCK. its literally top tier from the album. i was so ready for her to disrespect evermore completely, so i was very much satisfied that it was on the setlist.
FALSE GOD IS SO SEXY TO ME. the sax ... the soulfulness. i sway when it comes on bc its just so good?!?!? also ur so right for wanting john to play the sax on it. i think i would keel over and die. (Also just wanted to update you that i listened to lover on the way home from work ln and it .... it wounded me but i was BRAVE)
debut is soooooooooo chef's kiss. i am not a country fan at ALL. but i will get down and dirty to her old music idc. our song <3 im an our song STAN. i loved the music video.
me and you inviting only miss swift and the 1975 (plus their touring band) to our little cottage with our cats. it sounds like heaven to me. (matty is only allowed in when he's performing though, we have to humble him somehow)
love you SO MUCH. i hope ur having a wonderful day <3

clockwork hearts by feint is and will remain one of my top 10 songs
i don't know if i'd include the hyvemind remix too but it's up there, that's for sure
it's just such an emotional and emotive and relaxing and thinking song. the sax sections speak to my soul in novel ways.
it's also not flashy and low-key enough to be also a running theme and not exhausting to listen to over and over again (when the luster is gone, love with the familiarity is all you get)
it's eternally driving me

Review: Master of Kung Fu Epic Collection 2: Fight Without Pity
Tumblr media
This feels like it was written specifically for me.
I love James Bond. No, seriously, I love James Bond. My dad introduced me to Bond movies when I was 8 or 9, so I especially love the ridiculous, campy Roger Moore films. Classic Kung Fu films and contemporary Hong Kong films are also a passion of mine. In this volume, there's a 3 part arc where Shang Chi (a Bruce Lee stand-in) and his MI-6 colleagues have to infiltrate the island base of a mad assassin who has built an evil playground of killer robots and talking trains and who has a device that can selectively cut holes in the ozone layer. These comics may have been written 10 years before I was born, but they speak to my soul.
That's not to say that all of the issues in this volume are campy. In fact, writer Doug Moench (one of my favorite writers of the 70's and 80's) takes what could have been a very cliche concept and makes it something amazingly weird and compelling by constantly experimenting with different storytelling techniques and by splicing genres. There are much more serious stories, but, as David noted, the final issue of the collection is basically a 1930s comedy with Groucho Marx and W.C. Fields stand-ins. You also get the sense that Moench was drawing inspiration from Kurosawa films. He plays with perspective, and there will be 9-panel pages where two events are occurring simultaneously and the panels will switch back and forth between the two.
Even though these experiments are not always successful, I respect Moench's ambition to try to do something different. There's also a good mix of stories in this volume, so even if you don't like the weirder issues, there are several straightforward (but very good!) issues like the Annual, which teams up Shang-Chi and Iron Fist.
A big draw for me was also Paul Gulacy's art. There are times when it looks rough, but it's always dynamic and perfectly suited to the material.
I don't know if I'm in a fair position to judge this, because it's so perfectly tailored to my interests. It is worth noting that because Fight Without Pity is so heavily genre-based, it comes with some of the baggage of those genres (and the Sax Rohmer material which Marvel licensed). Black Jack Tarr insists on calling Shang-Chi "Chinaman" even though Shang-Chi asks him to call him by his name. From what I gather, Fu Manchu is true to the source material, but it's a very cliched stereotype. To be fair, Moench was very aware of the problems with the source material (I believe he called the Sax Rohmer novels "racist pieces of trash" during his interview with the Epic Marvel Podcast) and does his best to mitigate a lot of the issues. I don't think any of it would be enough to put someone off, but parts of it can be occasionally uncomfortable. Personally, I find this volume to be incredibly compelling, and Master of Kung Fu is, in my opinion, one of the gems of Marvel Comics in the 1970's.
Here's to hoping that Master of Kung Fu Epic Collection 3 finally sees the light of day!

nickname: most people call me rog. my papa calls me ruggers tho from the rugrats
height: 5'7
last thing i googled: danny kaye .....
song stuck in my head: the best things happen while you're dancing from white christmas. i just finished watching it and i think that number made me fall in love with danny kaye all over again sigh
amount of sleep: ahahaha not enough.
dream job: the one i'm in college for at the moment is a geology based park ranger, which is cool. the one i kinda gave up on when i was younger was being a jazz musician, i've played the sax for about 10 years now and was planning on that being my future until i kinda spiraled and realized i probably wasn't good enough to make it in the music industry, especially with a dying genre of music (unfortunately it's not the 1940s anymore and jazz is not that popular).
wearing: it's bed time babey ! grey sweatpants and a hoodie from oregon. and a pair of christmas socks with santa on them
movie/book that summarizes me well: i know this one was recent but soul (yes the pixar one). when i first watched this i was in a super bad depressive episode and had just given up on any chance of being a musician for my career and when i watched this it really changed how i saw the world. even the mundane became something worth living for and seeing that there was hope out there and music can still be an important factor in my life was so relieving to hear in that moment. any pixar movie is right up my alley tho.
current fav song: 3AM by AJR. i don't know how many times i can say i love this song, but i love this song. the stripped back instrumental with just a uke, a guitar, and piano, ryan's beautiful vocals, the yearning and the fear in the lyrics. god it's such a masterpiece of a song. realizing you really like a girl, but it may only be a fling to her, and you don't want to be rejected, hey you should feel lucky she chose you right? but what if the feeling isn't reciprocated? as someone who has had many crushes that were unreciprocated, this song just speaks volumes to my soul. holy shit.
aesthetic: i honestly don't know. whatever a plethora of button ups and t shirts with jeans and a toontown hat is ????
fav author(s): jeez i haven't read in so long. my favorites are agatha christie (i have a whole collection of her books), courtney peppernell (she does some good poetry), shannon messenger (i read keeper of the lost cities as a kid and her let the sky fall series as i got older and i MET her once she's super sweet) and neil gaiman (his stuff is amazing).
random fact: i am low-key terrified of amusement parks after dark. idk why i feel like something bad is going to happen as soon as the sun goes down, even with the pretty lights and the rides and the music, ever since i was a kid i've felt EXTREMELY uneasy and nervous and jittery, especially walking down main street at disneyland at night. idk.
tagging @sam-winchester-kinnie (sorry sam no obligation to do this obvs) @freshwatercatfishjpegimage @generic-blog-name-69 @ anyone i may have missed or anyone who wishes to do it :) i am big sleepy atm

Here’s the thing.
So one thing I’ve learned about myself over my many years is that one thing I really enjoy and appreciate is when I go see a band or singer at a live gig, and they play and sing every note and every word of every song exactly the way they played and sang it on the original recording. I love the electricity, unity, and sometimes even transcendence of a live show. But I also love to sing along. I am comforted by the predictable “oh” or “ooh” sung just the way I’ve always heard it, every breath in place, every inflection on point. I don’t want to get lost; I want to hear the songs I love just the way they were intended to be heard when first they were committed to tape, vinyl, or--what?--digital file.
Other people appreciate a jazz or jam band playing riffs on common themes, because they never know just where the melody will go. They groove on the surprise around every corner of a solo, or of scat-singing, the way the vibe of the night or season or age of the players will make every song brand new every time it is played. They love the extended, extemporaneous sax solo at a Springsteen concert. They enjoy a greatest hits medley. They want to wander in the forest of the music, once in a while brought back to the already-blazed path, but don’t require the security of sticking exclusively to it. They trust the players to guide them, and that experience of hearing beloved music is, I’m sure, as joyful for that sort as the word-perfect singalong quality of my favourites is for me. It’s just different ways of enjoying the experience--personal tastes, personal quirks.
Maybe we both love, say, Amazing Grace. I want to hear it sung plainly, simply, with the traditional melody and phrasing and lyrics. They want to hear it with a slithering backbeat, angular phrasing, lyrics updated for the 21st century. But we both have the same, or at least similar, ardent love and appreciation for the source material, because the soul of the thing is there no matter what is added in, stripped down, or un/tampered with. But maybe that new remix just isn’t my vibe, so I’ll skip it. I’m glad it’s probably going to introduce new folks to Amazing Grace, and maybe they’ll be moved and touched by the rebooted version, and it will make an indelible mark upon their heart, and that’s gorgeous--I love that--that’s what art is for. And maybe it will bring them around to my simple, barebones voice-and-piano version, and that’s nice, too, but it’s OK if that version doesn’t speak to them the way it does to me, that they find themselves moved more by the funky, updated version. The soul of the thing is still there, speaking to us both.
Just because I know from my own experience and self-knowledge that I probably won’t enjoy the new, exciting, interesting--yes, probably more contemporarily relevant, I’ll admit--version, and have decided It Just Wasn’t Made For Me, so I’m not going to seek it out, doesn’t mean I begrudge anyone else enjoying it (in fact, I hope they do!); or that I am crying fanboy tears that this version isn’t note-for-note, word-for-word, the same as the version I prefer; or that I think my way of interacting with or consuming the source material is the “correct” way. It’s only that it’s the correct way for me. It’s just what I like.
I like to sing along.

Hey Stupid, I love you
Luke Patterson x Reader
Tumblr media
A/N: This wasn’t a request, I’m kind of struggling on requests for a minute because of writers block, but Hey Stupid, I love you by JP Saxe started playing on my playlist and then I wrote this inspired by it. I wrote it in like an hour, I’m sorry if it’s not the best but yeah! Please send me requests, I don’t know when I’ll get them done but I’m working on it! Also feedback. Yeh.

How were you supposed to feel as you watch Julie and Luke laugh with each other as they practiced? He was leaning over the piano she was seated at, his guitar slung around his back and you couldn’t look away from them. It was blessing to be able to see the boys, even touch them now thanks to Julie and you freeing their souls, but this? Watching your boyfriend pay more attention to Julie than you felt more like curse. This was dumb. He was your boyfriend. He loved you. Right?
“What are you thinking about?” Luke called across the room after he looked at you, curled on the couch and staring into space. Your head snapped to him and you saw the warmth in the smile he gave you, melting away any doubt in the moment that Luke didn’t love you. When he looked at you like that, you didn’t need to second guess.
“It’s nothing.” You assured him and Luke’s brow pulled together. Usually when you said it’s nothing, you were overthinking something and he wanted to know what, he wanted to help. He put his guitar down and jumped over the table to sit next to you.
You leaned against him gently, your back hitting his chest as he wrapped his arms around your shoulders to pull you close. Julie, seeing the moment between the two of you, took that as her cue to leave and grabbed the music sheets she was working on. Luke waited until she was gone before speaking. “Okay, come on. You can tell me what’s going on.”
Letting your hand grab his, you looked up into his eyes to see the worry he held for you. You chewed your lip trying to figure how to voice your insecurities without blaming Luke. “I don’t know, sometimes I just see you and Julie and I-I-“ you struggle on your words but Luke stays silent, knowing you need to talk about it. “I just think sometimes you want someone as amazing Julie instead of…”
You were silent for longer this time and Luke knew you weren’t going to finish that sentence. So he did for you. “Someone as amazing and kind and caring and beautiful as you?” he caught the smile tugging your lips and Luke laughed, pressing a kiss to the side of your temple. “Y/N, I don’t want Julie, I want you. Okay?”
You squeezed his hand, moving slightly to kiss his lips. “I know. I guess I forget sometimes.” You shrugged at your words, pretending it was nothing but Luke knew better.
“Well don’t.” He laughed and you did too, moving into his hold more. “But in case you do, I’ll be right there to remind you.”
“I know, but it hard when I see you standing there paying attention to your band instead of me and all I want to do is run up to you and kiss you.”
“Then do it.” Luke blurted out and you smirked at him, seeing the blush cross his lips. “I’m just saying. I want you to do it as much as you do. Interrupt my practice all you want.”
“The others would hate me.”
“No they wouldn’t, don’t be stupid.” You scoffed playfully at his own playfulness.
“I’m not stupid! You are!”
“Oh really? I’m stupid? Remind me, who’s doubting my love for you?” His voice was quiet when he rested his head against yours and your eyes fluttered close at his closeness. “They love you too much to hate you, just like I do.”
You hummed and it sounded more like a laugh at the end. “Say it again? You know, just to remind me.”
Luke smiled, feeling his cheeks hurt from how hard they pulled. “I love you.”
Your mouth opened for you to return the saying before Reggie and Alex popped into the studio causing you and Luke to groan. “You guys couldn’t have given us two more minutes?” you asked them as they put their hands up.
“Hey, we just live here, you two are the ones getting cozy on the couch.” You shot Reggie a mock look he returned before grinning at you and picking up his bass. You moved so Luke could get up and he did right before pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
Julie had came back at some point as well despite you having not seen. She shared a glance to Luke and you, asking if everything was alright and you nodded, appreciating her checking up. Luke grabbed his guitar, playing a few notes before sending you a wink.
You smirked, remembering what Luke assured you that you could do. “Hey stupid!” you called out, receiving three curious head turns and one grinning boy. You jumped off the couch and over the table, right into Luke’s arms he had held out for you as you planted a kiss on his lips perfectly. One of Luke’s hands cupped your face and the other stayed around your waist to hold you closer, your own arms finding their way to wrap around his neck and shoulders. The kiss lasted only a few second before you pulled away like a kid at Christmas. “I love you.”
