My worst problem with this season is the characterization, personally. Everything just felt so out of place. This is most prominent in the Rayllum plotline, in that, like - yeah, I get it, Callum is being harsh and standoffish because he's upset, but it's been two years and we barely saw a single moment of confrontation about it. "Did you find Viren? / So you just left for two years for nothing?" was a good moment, but I feel like they really needed to have an actual argument about it. Rayla has always been headstrong and tends to rush at her problems, and she gets defensive so easily - and if she's grown into a person who isn't like that anymore, we need to see that development in REAL TIME, not just see the end result. The whole conflict just felt so unbearably bland and devoid of any real emotion, and it wasn't explained well enough in-show to justify it happening at all.

This also has to do with the animation. I rewatched seasons 1-3 right before I started season 4 because I wanted to see it all linearly and have 1-3 fresh in my memory, and the difference in animation quality is so… evident? the movements look so STIFF and the expressions are soooo bland and lacking in real emotion. it's just so obvious, especially in contrast with the previous three seasons, how stiff and lifeless this season's character expressions/movements are.

Also in regards to characterization. I was so FRUSTRATED with how they handled Callum's possession by Aaravos? Not in the moment, the moment was FANTASTIC (though even there it felt like nobody in the room was even barely reacting to it the way they would have or should have), but also as it continued on. When Callum tried to talk about it to Ezran by the fire and Ez thought he was referring to Rayla leaving - like ??? if a mystical star being that even all the arch dragons couldn't hope to take down threatened to take my brother from me, I WOULD NOT BE THINKING ABOUT HIS RELATIONSHIP ISSUES. And Rayla's approach, too: she says "No one can control you" - Aaravos literally did and YOU WERE THERE. YOU SAW. it felt so swept aside and like it barely meant anything to anyone, except Callum (and even then it was only brought up significantly like two times after it happened.)

It all really just comes down to writing. Everything felt like setup for season 5, and there are ways this could have actually been done good, but you cannot justify and ENTIRE SEASON of what amounts to practically filler after three straight seasons of nothing but plot-driven episode structures.

(Also, and these are more minor things, I hated the retcon-esque nonsense or the way things were brushed aside in-season. Like Callum going through ALL that trouble to decode the mirror: the payoff for all of that SHOULD have been Callum discovering how the mirror works on his own and getting to see him interact with Aaravos privately and directly (mirroring Viren's interactions with him, and Callum has been HEAVILY themed to reflect Viren for a LOT of this season). Or the fact that Zubeia literally said "every arch dragon has a CLUE to where Aaravos is, but no one truly knows the location" only to immediately transition to "this one specific arch dragon has a literal map to where Aaravos is." like. fucking hello????)

Random thought but I miss Patrick winking at Eliza (3x3) and generally being mischievous (all of season 2 and episode 3x6 with William.)

He’s way more professional with her in season 4, for obvious reasons. He’s still fun, and they have fun, but it’s different, which is a testament to how respectful Nash is, contrary to how he’s sometimes talked about by viewers who are simply not paying attention. Also, I don’t think it’s JUST that she’s his employee. I think he caught feelings and is trying to recalibrate how to act with her (less schoolyard teasing and even more sincerity).

In Season 4, Eliza softens and teases Nash more than he teases her (after she wins at the races, the end of the telephone episode). He lets her lead, really, in that regard, because he's not going to cross a line given the power dynamic in their relationship when she works at Nash & Sons.

So we've seen rivals (season 2 with the shift in 3x3) to friends and colleagues (3x6 and Season 4) and now LOVERS (Season 5) ????

I really wonder what Season 5 Nash will be like.

Edit: to add: the natural chemistry and attraction that’s been there didn’t lead to romance yet because they’ve had really clear boundaries: being rivals AND then being colleagues meant really clear lines they didn’t or couldn’t cross- even if they toed them sometimes. There were rules of engagement. Those boundaries will be gone session 5- so their friendship can flourish into something else.

I think the funniest (read as: most upsetting) things about the Five/Lila/Diego side plot is that literally NOBODY got a happy ending out of it??????????

There are definitely outcomes to that bombshell of a plot line that would have been more favorable than others (my favorite probably being the one where it doesn’t happen at all), but let’s take a look at the facts shall we?

Diego, Lila, and Five all die (along with the others of course)

Diego dies with no true resolution for the fact that his wife and the mother of his children cheated on him with his brother

Diego also ends up some sort of weird cuck who watches Lila reach for Five’s hand during their final moments, knowing it’ll be the last hand she holds.

Diego dies with no clarity as to whether or not Lila loved Five or not. She never fucking answered him. Maybe her silence was meant to speak for itself; I just think it’s bullshit that he died not knowing and having that uncertainty.

Lila dies after spending 7 years in some sort of time limbo away from her children, only to see them for a grand total of maybe an hour being she meets her death

Five dies also not knowing if Lila loved him, which I think is significantly less important than anything else on this list, but I do think if you’re going to write a love triangle at least SOMEBODY should know if love is in the equation or not?

Diego and Five both die with bad blood between them.

I have mixed feelings on the season overall, and I didn’t hate a lot of the aspects of it that others seem to.

I can however agree that not only is the love triangle unnecessary and weird, but it was shoddily written and cruel in its delivery. This is some half-crocked shit I’d expect to see in a mid-series writing slump to generate drama that can be resolved over the course of a season or two- NOT some kind of ambiguous series finale.

The only props I have to deliver to this plot line are to the cast for managing to act their asses off despite the script being garbage.

I feel like he misinterpreted what the fans really want (that be regarding chenford and the show in general). The constant “How do we add drama!” comment didn’t sit well with me.

I gotta say that the majority of fic ideas that tumble through my brain are fix-it fics for YJ. I'm super not jazzed with where the show went (especially because we've seen it be amazing) and I mourn the loss of the writers room.

(Because truly, the thing that made season 1&2 so much better than the later seasons was a writers room where all the writers got together and workshopped ideas and running jokes and characterization. We don't get that in the later seasons. The only ones who see the big picture are Greg and Brandon and sometimes the first idea isn't the best idea. Sometimes you need a writers room to bounce plotlines off of.)

It's a little bit weird having slim to no hope for another season of Young Justice and not really feeling happy with where the show is and yet being totally obsessed internally with fixing it. It's a really odd war I have going on within myself right now.

You know, say what you want about DC comics but at least they aren't so bad that my brain is yelling at me to fix it 24/7. Like... They totally used to be but now it's pretty chill actually

Ok so today I found out Nanbaka ended some time ago so I spoiled myself and man, the ending was so rushed and angst for no reason and overall disappointing??? The author threw very important lore info and a plot twist that felt all out of the blue near the ending... I love angst but when it is well written, and this was not. Their friendship was real, even if prior to the series start wasn't I know what I read was real friendship and this ending ruins for me one of the main themes of this show.

I don't post a lot about this series because I started it before I even had Tumblr but Nanbaka was everything to me back then. Even after I was forced to move on because the english translation stopped and finding all chapters fan translated was very difficult I'd find myself thinking about these characters sometimes and I almost dare to say that it was a comfort series. Not being able to keep reading it without going through a Odyssey was already upsetting but the ending? What in the actual fuck is that. Is not even the fact it was a sad ending what bothers me the most, it's that it was sad and felt bad written or without proper building 🙁

This literally summaries my opinion regarding what happened to the main group:

Now I feel bad? Bad like when you receive bad news irl? Like I've received a punch in the stomach or a betrayal from a dear old friend

If spy x family or yuu & grim (including all of their friends in twst) separate in the end I'm losing all hope of being happy and relaxing with this trope without fearing the chance of getting backstabbed again forever
