Hello! I'm Jelly! Jellyfish, JJ, any variation of those also welcomed🪼♎🇹🇴 I like to write for fun and started this blog in Nov '23 thanks to my Miguel O'Hara (ATSV) fixation. I also write for Peter B. and Ben Reilly, though not as often. Just starting to write for Nanami Kento(JJK).

I love to gush/talk about Miguel and I mainly write for him at the moment and for the unforeseeable future 🤧. I'm happy to become moots and love to support fellow writers. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

I have some things to say about Miguel’s anomaly theory

Miguel keeps on getting on Miles about him ruining everything. He’s like “you were never supposed to be Spider-Man!!” Oh brother!!!But it’s not like Miles had any control of the spider biting him.

I find it crazy how Miguel glided by the fact that he destroyed a whole universe. You did that and now you suddenly have the right to dictate what the other spider people do?? If it were me I would not be able to trust that man.

And I feel like even if his theory about the anomalies were right Miguel’s situation and Miles situation are totally different.

Miguel literally took over the life of a version of him that D*ED. How do you not see something wrong w/ that. You would think you would have the common sense not to mess w that. He is from a different universe inserting himself into a new one and that’s where the problem lies.

Miles is just trying to save his dad. Now if his dad already died and he brought a dad from a different universe to replace him then I think that would be a problem, but that’s not what’s happening.

Another thing Miguel talking all this mess about Miles being the original anomaly, but if Miles was the problem shouldn’t his whole universe already be gone 🤨 matter of fact shouldn’t it have disappeared as soon as the og Spider-Man d*ed??

I’m pretty sure this is supposed to be obvious (or maybe I’m wrong 🤷🏾‍♀️) but I’ve seen to many reactions where ppl are like Miguel is right and Jeff has to d*e and I’m just like 👀

You and Noir made sure your watches were off so no one could find your area.

“How’ve you been hijo? Other then being chased down for no reason” “I’ve been good, I feel so fucking scared and wanna go home” “listen we’ll get you home okay” Miles smiled, Gabriella fell asleep on him so you all sat down. You and Noir were calming him down, he’s your son and it’s your job to make sure he’s safe.

Even if you have to kill or fucking die for him, he’s your responsibility. You must make sure he’s safe and if anyone harms him they’ll have to get through you.

I don’t think it’s very fair for you to try and knock others from reading Miguel’s OG run because truthfully that’s the only place you’re going to get his full character since every run after that is just “Let’s place him in different time scenarios to fix other people’s problems”. I’ve read ur reasonings and some of the issues I just don’t see and that’s coming from someone who’s ALSO half Hispanic and had similar family experiences. Idk I guess comic Miguel is rlly important and relatable to me and you shouldn’t turn others away from having that potential connection too. :/

NAH LOL it is *not* the only place to get his character truthfully -- his character is not consistent between runs, or between comic and movie! Not even Pdavid's runs have an unified version of Miguel since he just becomes an author self-insert after one point. The way Pdavid writes '92 Miguel - Gabriel is also shamelessly almost the same as he wrote Bruce Banner - Rick Jones. (another series where he ended up being pushed off the book after he started making really weird decisions; and notice these last two are white guys, which is how pdavid depicts Miguel all the time.)

I haven't even told people to not read them. In multiple posts i say 'read the first ones to see how it is, stop when you get annoyed, look up summaries, don't feel obligated to treat it as canon because it isn't.' If anyone feels threatened by this they should examine where that defensiveness is coming from.

I'm gonna be real with you that's like saying "the only way to REALLY understand Miles Morales is to read his ultimates run." You know, the one where his mother gets eaten alive by Venom, his dad thinks he's at fault for killing her and nearly beats him with a cane, where the closest thing he has to peter is a clone named jessica drew, and that eventually gets completely retconned in a universe explosion so main universe Miles can be rewritten. Do you remember seeing any of the things above in ITSV? Would you call them *the only real way to fundamentally understand Miles as a character?*

I keep seeing the rhetoric that 'real fans' have to subscribe to the very first script of these characters and that somehow enjoying their ATSV versions is fake-stanning and that is just... not true. That's not how comics work. Our most iconic, definitive, memorable traits for MANY of these superheroes have come from subsequent comic runs, rewrites, feats of adaptation and the interaction between fanwork-becoming-canon. Even uncle Ben's 'power and responsibility' schtick is NOT an original part of Peter's first draft. That came from re-imaginings and rewrites.

I'm really, truly not a fan of the argument that 'relating to parts of a character' completely absolves the text from criticism. It's not a good comic. It barely tries to be latino rep and frankly, I'm not going to praise it for just placing a label on him and doing nothing with it. I don't care for this white man's truth. It's racist and creepy and I should be paid reparations for having to read a storyline where the same girl gets paired up with two different brothers and then their father just to end up getting killed for a sexier token love interest. I am constantly frustrated by the argument that new fans should be forced to read it and potentially get turned away from comics forever; it's one of the worst offerings you could give them. 90's Marvel and DC are a public fandom joke and nearly led the market into bankruptcy!!!!! (Marvel filled for loss in 1996. IT WAS BAD. That's part of why the whole 2099 line went up in flames! The money was going down the drain.)

I've been a comic reader for a long time and I just can't give them blissful innocence passes like that. The current editor-in-chief at Marvel did yellowface and pretended to be a japanese man for years to write some shitty superhero weeb comics with no accountability whatsoever. He still has a job. RUNNING the company!

And here's the thing: I like Miguel too. I have a shitty family and I empathize with that but I KNOW he deserves much better than to be confined by white people's scripts and fetishes. I *want* him to have a chance, multiple chances even, to be completely rewritten and remolded by latine voices without the need for them to constantly refer or tie back into that white man's work; It is our right just as any other.

ATSV throws away most of Miguel's baggage, and straight up refuses to refer to the weird indepth sludge pdavid had going on; the artbook doesn't mention these first comics or most of his runs, they actually talk about other groundbreaking sci-fi concept work and the idea of basically rebuilding the landscape from scratch, and I am deeply thankful they do that. One of the biggest themes of the movie *is* that the idea of comic canon is fraught and full of holes, and that we should subvert it into joyful and honest expressions of these characters' cultures. These are movies that begin with the Comics Code Authority stamp, a censorship marker that among other things explicitly prohibited the positive depiction of pro-civil rights narratives and homosexual relationships, and actively turned their nose at protagonist black characters — & proceed to rip it to shreds. That's what we should be doing!

Question: So, if Miguel knows spider!reader in Arachnophilia, and spider!mig is mentioned in AFM, does reader know her own spider variant (personally or from Miguel/other spiders mentioning them) ??

I love both stories, and obvi the idea of Miguel & Reader being tied in several universes, but I was just curious on the idea of reader knowing.

oh im SO GLAD I get to talk about this THANK YOU SM cos its been on my mind for days!! I will use this chance to actually drop the dante fic cinematic universe timeline, which is: easing tensions - arachnophilia - a fortunate mistake - a fortunate mistake II There's certain things I gotta keep vague because I know how arachnophilia ends (and how it might tie into AFM II) and I don't want to spoil, but I'll talk about a bit because I'm rabid rn.

I wanna add for the sake of my lore on multiverse stuff, Miguel's who are turned into Spider-men are quite rare? I think this gets mentioned in AFM but Miguel's in general are rare, Spider Miguel's even more so. I took him saying Gabi's universe was the one where he was happy to heart, along with the fact we see zero variants of him in the society. That shit was always the most interesting thing to flesh out. I also don't know if I've ever talked about nena's multiverse story properly either, but its pretty tragic. She largely only exists in universes where Miguels' exist, and in all the ones where she comes into contact with him she dies. Our Miguel's universe is the only one where she doesn't, and Miguel blames this inititally on his canon but, as we know, canon isn't real, in reality it's because our Miguel was the only one with multi-verse experiences that humbled his apathy and violent tendencies. It's sort of like how meeting Miles put Peter B. on a better course, Peter's influence on Miguel is something no other Miguel had and it changed him in a way that made him capable of growing. Vig is the only other one we've met and it's obviously implied he was a poor partner who became a good dad after nena's death. Nena is like, universal collatoral damage, and it's only in the universe where she wasn't 'meant' to love him that she got to be loved. It's fucked up and she deserved better fr.

BUT I will say, to actually answer the question (sorry lol) the reader in arachnophilia is actually not a variant of the reader from AFM. I am sticking with the rule that AFM reader is never a spider, because its important later hehe.

BUT! But this makes Spider!Mig and readers relationship equally interesting to me anyway. I am a sucker for starcrossed lovers, excellent trope, and while it was meant to be a one-off I wanna use it to explore the idea of fully abandoning ones canon and exploring a relationship beyond the bounds of ones universe. I will be going more into Spider!Migs backstory for this, but I think the films never properly addressed the potential dangers/tragedy of love between people from different universes. I used it a bit with OG Miguel with my explanation for what happened with Gabi, E.g him trying to combine their universes, but this is especially spicy. So, again, actual question (I'm so sorry I swear this is all I think about, rip my PhD) as of AFM II reader also doesn't know about Miguel's variants beyond Vig, YET. Miguel is aware of Spider!Mig and reader as of AFM, and if you go back you can see a lot of his mindset in there, especially when he talks about not wanting kids because of his genetic mess and feeling like he's too dangerous.

Miguel as a character is great, I can't say that enough, he's harboring so much self loathing and unaddressed trauma that while he wants to do the right thing he imposes very strict rules that always end in hypocricy. In the same way I think he's awful to Miles because he see's Miles making the same mistake he did (e.g destroying the universe for a loved one) and a lot of his violence is like, imposed, he's awful to his variants because he knows he's fucked up his own moral compass and takes it out on them.

But yes Miguel knows where they are, he has not told reader though, but I do want to have them cross paths.

it's a direct push between the readers trust in miguel. not wanting to pursue a romantic relationship in the chances of been cheated on/hurt again.

and for miguel actually cheating, i theorise it was more spur of the moment, or during a toxic relationship or even after a traumatic even. needing to find a distraction from the pain/toxicity. being young and stupid, stubborn and spontaneous. i feel like he definitely regrets the fact now.

BUT ANYWAYS, even if my theories are wrong, miguel is a cheater in the comics anyway so like.....

I just want to make it clearr im in no way mad at the reactions!! I love it when ppl interact and eventhough I got a few nasty ones, the vast majority of ppl are being respectful - just a lot more shocked than I was expecting 😭😭

I need mig to have bright red flags so its more satisfying when he gets that redemption. He improves because someone like reader shows him he can, that he deserves love and happy things, and can achieve it through hard work and effort and the conscious will to change!! unfortunately, I'm not a love conquers all type of person. need him to work for it 🤞🤞

mig to me is a textbook self sabotager. I think he is whatever the opposite of a martyr is, like in atsv - obsessed with making the hard decisions and painting himself as the villain bc that's a reflection of his whole life. a parentified kid (abusive dad, conchata.. yeah I have some thoughts abt conchata in the og run), young teen dad - I think he has really a really skewed vision of love and intimacy.

with how the cheating actually happened, you are pretty close, anon (although I won't spoil). I think shifting focus from the fact that he cheated to why he cheated may give some of y'all a different perspective <3

what is ur overall thoughts on miguel in atsv? ik lots of og fans were kind of upset that his design is changed and his personality seems to shift. personally i rlly like it, i think his design is super cool (bro is drop dead gorgeous) and i don't think his personality is that different from the comics.. imo the shift makes sense considering the extra backstory they've added. will always love 90s miguel but for me this design is easily my fave

i have to agree with you on the design- 90s miguel will always be classic, and will always be special, but i LOVE the atsv design. his costume is fucking rad and i love how futuristic it is!

personality wise, i think they did a great job! i've stated before that miguel learns from past mistakes and grows from them- whether it be positively or negatively depends on the situation. the way he grew from the collapse of the universe where he had a family seems to be very accurate to how he would in the comics. he's willing to do almost anything for the greater good, even if that does mean letting one or a few people die to save the majority. he's done in before in the comics, and has let villains die due to this line of thinking. he will sometimes veer from this thinking to save his own loved ones- see dana and gabriel- but overall he's willing to risk a lot to get the job done.

i will say i missed his sarcasm. he had some of it, but there could have easily been more. he's a smartass guy, not just a jackass. more interactions between him and lyla will always be welcome

and while i'm not the biggest fan of the backstory they gave him in the movie, i can kind of see it working with the kind of person mig is. he had a horrible family growing up- aside from gabriel. while i think he'd avoid being a father- both of his fathers were shitty, and he's always terrified of becoming like either of them- i could possibly see him wanting to try to be a dad

overall, i think they did a great job with him! there could have been some adjustments, and they could have just stuck with his original backstory (have gabriel or dana somehow be involved), but i'm happy with his treatment overall!

Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 from the comics and of the Spiderverse movies are so fascinating to me

I was hyped to see Gwen lore in Across the Spiderverse. So in love with the choices made. Her character arcs. How being abandoned by one system (cops/the justice system/her dad) made her vulnerable and susceptible to another system (the Spider Society). How she chose not to go home for fear of experiencing a canon event WHICH BTW IN THE OG COMICS. Her dad ALMOST dies. But he survives. He likely would have lived in the movie even without the spiderverse stuff, but Gwen was led to believe that this was inevitable and would therefore Have to rely on Miguel and Jessica for that guidance and support. How she was homeless. How she clung to Jessica only to get detachment.

Versus in the comics where Gwen decides to be homeless to avoid hurting people such as her dad and the band. Even though Glory, Betty, and Mary Jane clearly have a place to live that Gwen can access anytime she wants. How she gets manipulated into things because she just wants to protect her dad. How she seeks out Jessica because she's not a Peter Parker.

How both are balls of rage who just feel alone no matter how many people reach out. Movie!gwen who forms a band vs comics!gwen who uses music to stay true to herself.

Movie!gwen who has a band of alternate universe spiderpeople vs comics!gwen who changed the life of One gwen (617) so much that said gwen formed a society of gwens just to protect her (65) like

I saw your post & decided to continue watching cobra kai (I started it a while ago w my abuelo, he's obsessed with the og karate kid movies) and I have to say robby getting expelled on his first day back at school after trying to break up the fight IS my villain origin story

like obviously kicking miguel over a railing was not ideal, but he wasn't trying to kill anyone he was trying to defend himself!!

This gets me so HEATED, because afterward people treat Robby as a pariah when any one of them could have caused catastrophic harm to their friends and rivals! Any one of them could have done what Robby did, and everyone there was at fault for the violence that broke out.

Not only does Robby receive the brunt of the blame for a fight he didn't start, but this is what happens on his first day back to school? After all the effort it took to get him back in school? Robby couldn't afford that. Now, he's basically a drop out with a record, and he's got nowhere safe to go.

His dad who is arguably at fault for encouraging this behavior among the teens, repeatedly avoids being there for his son - who is on the run and homeless, and when he visits Robby when he's arrested and put in Juvie, he guilt trips Robby about not being there for him because Robby "put Miguel in the hospital."

Great. It's not like Robby can argue with that, but Johnny is his father. No matter what Robby did, he should be there for him. Robby's got no one there to protect him. No one acts like they care. Robby can't trust anyone to prioritize him.

This man saw his son with a black eye in Juvie and automatically assumed Robby was fighting. Robby is repeatedly told he's a bad kid by everyone, and everyone else around him doesn't face nearly the same consequences for their behavior. All of them should have been in Juvie ten times over. Robby just happened to make the most dangerous mistake.

...and then Robby just gets abandoned again. He's literally sleeping in a sleeping bag in a dojo when he gets out of Juvie, and the adults in his life are like oh well, nothing we can do about that!

It makes me literally lose my mind. I can't cope 💜

Miguel O’Hara: hero changed by tragedy

Origins

This resulted in the head of the company, Tyler Stone, to have Miguel injected with a highly injected drug called ‘ rapture’ a drug the company could cure if Miguel would continue his work with the company. This drug causes hallucinations and more. At night he sneaks into the labs to cure himself from the drug, only for a rival to see him in the gene changing machine and changing the settings to infuse Miguel’s dna with spider dna.

Miguel killed someone with his powers of sharp talons sharp and tough enough to cut through metal and his fangs that had a paralyzing effect, even producing natural webbing, enhanced hearing and vision.

FAMILY/Relationships

Miguel’s family and relationships are both complicated and sad. he grew up with his mother Conchata O'Hara, his younger brother Gabriel O'Hara, and his father George O'Hara. His ‘father’ was abusive to his mother and himself, while Conchata left her abusive husband taking the boys she hated Miguel. For looking like his father who really was Tyler stone. Who conchata had an affair with before he killed his first wife in an obsessive way was to be with Conchata.

Miguel had two girlfriends that were told about Xina an au tech expert and Dina his fiancé. But in the end Miguel truely loved Dina.

Now Miguel’s little brother George was always the opposite of Miguel choosing to live in the downtown/poor part of New York with his gf. And rejecting his brother's career at Alchamex. He was jealous of Miguel and his ‘perfect life’ and was the first to find out Miguel was Spider-Man.

Tragic losses

First loss Miguel went through was his relationship with Dina who assumed Miguel was cheating on her with xina. Dina ended up dating Tyler stone (ya ik complicated). After getting captured though by 2099 venom she is killed by a bullet going through venom. (This was Miguel’s og canon event)

Next he finds out his brother was the green goblin and his reputation in the downtown of New York was destroyed with their confrontation. Cause george hated that his gf was obsessed with Spider-Man, (there’s not much more to his motivation to become the green goblin than that).and it’s assumed that he died in the city wide flood and war with the sea mutants.

His mother is shot and killed on their way to stop Tyler stone from leaving off world to escape the downfall of New York and the war.

And lastly Miguel watches as his real dad is shot and killed but a sea mutant. In the end Miguel and the sister of Dina escapes earth watching as new York Alchamex building burns. Promising himself he would never become a man like Tyler stone.

Ending

And that is a summary of Miguel O’haras tragic tale of being Spider-Man. And as much as the issues of Spider-Man 2099 went ending on him leaving earth on a spaceship. They never continued his story past that point in the 1990 issues. With a few appearances in games, other Spider-Man comics and now his story and tragic losses continues as he tried to heal from all the death and loss of his family, friends and fiancé.

Leaving his universe to another in which he was happy, away from the duties of being Spider-Man and the stress that came with it only for even that to end.

devils dads trip got me all in my feels for clem 🥹 (spoilers ish below if you haven’t read my “the blue” au yet) also a bit sappy so excuse that. been going through a lot personally family wise so i guess it fits

- you just know that if miguel was alive he’d be the hughes brothers’ second dad / mentor

- and i just imagine that clem knows that (as much as she likes marty)

- when jack gets 100 goals and his hatty, clem just feels so much. maybe she’s at the game (edit: forgot this was an away game so she is most def not there lmao) maybe she’s watching from home. maybe she can’t watch at all. but when jack comes home from columbus she hugs him very tightly

- overall, as alluded to in the og part, this time of the year can be pretty tough on clem. getting a facetime notification from jimmy and then immediately seeing luke and jack made her smile

- (does clem feel a little pride when nico gets 300 career points? yes. does she have to swallow when pictures of him post game come out? yes. but no one has to know)

- in the Very Slow Process of writing the next big part of this world. if anyone has any suggestions on what they’d like to see, i’d love to hear it ❤️❤️

almost no adaptation follows the original except the russian one. spain one follows a general outline and then it does its own thing.

they live together but its on accident bc she gets into a fight with her dad and the dad kind of kicks her out. (he was like 'its either him or me) and bea chooses alvaro.

the dad in the spain one openly hates alvaro bc he knows about all the fraud and the fake company bea's the president of. ('director' of).

there isn't an affair bc gonazalo (mario) tells him that he cant juggle two relationships at the same time. also, no engagement to cayetana (marcela). he has an on\off again relationship with her (sex based). also there's no letter (she find outs via accidentally eavesdropping) and no miguel backstory. bea's tragic backstory is that her mother is dead. and she's all her dad has.

they live together and they're kind of engaged but also alvaro doesnt want anyone to know that they're dating\together. so, like OG he's concerned about appearances. he's not a huge griton and he's not a huge alcoholic but he is very immature.

instead of bea gaslighting him, when she finds out (with the guidance of some other character) she starts fucking with him by taking control of the company behind closed doors. she threatens him (and gonzalo) into taking her magazine suggestions bc she is legally their boss. and if alvaro doesnt do what she says, she'll tell everyone she is the actual owner of everything. and also, this makes him crazy bc she's acting out and she also breaks up with him and he doesnt know why.

this version is not very into juntas, so there's no board reveal. and the main antagonist is diego (daniel). and she doesnt have a cartagena arc, but rather everyone comes to her, even the michel equivalent (nacho, a lawyer). also, diego is revealed to be alvaro's brother at some point.

spain's version is more concerned with all the fraud happening than the original bc spain loves punishing ppl for tax fraud i guess.

I’m sure we’ll see all the kids being trained by all the senseis, but I also imagine certain ones will get specialized training by certain senseis in order to make sure they’re all rounded enough for the Sekai Taikai. So, hear me out, writers:

Daniel is the one who helps repair things between Anthony and Kenny. Daniel’s casual neglect of Anthony is one of the things that helped spur him to bully Kenny in the first place. Daniel was also Robby’s OG sensei, which could help him earn some trust with Kenny, and he also knows what it feels like to be manipulated by Silver. If you throw in Demetri, too, you have someone who speaks nerd language and can serve as a mediator.

Johnny teaches Robby and Sam. We have not seen Robby learn karate from his dad once. Their relationship came leaps and bounds last season, but imagine it going even further with Johnny actually teaching his son his karate. And since Daniel now doesn’t consider Johnny a corrupting influence, it’ll show how much trust and respect he has for Johnny to allow him to train his daughter. Also reunite Devon with Johnny because he can nurture her competitiveness, and give Sam a chance to develop a friendship with her.

Chozen teaches Tory, Hawk, and Miguel. We have our three champions, all three former Cobra Kais, but each one has something about the AVT that kept their victories from feeling fully earned (Miguel showing bad sportsmanship, Hawk only getting to the finals because Miguel dropped out, Tory getting a purchased win), and all three have been struggling to figure themselves out lately. They’re also three of the strongest fighters and stand to learn the most from a master.

If you promise you can do this without any romance drama, imagine the possibilities.
