the idea came from this bumblekast episode!

i followed it as closely as i could while adding my own stuff (cus i make comics for a living--i can't NOT make it into a cohesive story!) and keeping the original ending bcus it was funny to me.

answering a few questions i got while this was being posted. >>

"how was metal sonic and the egg pawns affected?"

it was a spray/gas that could affect anything sentient by seeping into skin/metal/whatever. as long as it's something that was designed to be affected (so not grass, trees, water... unless it's a sentient person made of those things. like a tree or water monster for example).

an AI like nicole for instance would be affected physical or in a computer.

(i dont personally believe the egg pawns are as mindless as a pawn could be. they've shown sentience is being perceptive to attacks and threats. THAT'S JUST A HEADCANON THO. i incorporated it anyway cus i thought it was funny even if it probably doesn't make sense to anyone else).

it being scentless is an eggman specific design. if you could smell an unfamiliar scent on yourself (given you can smell at all), you'd wonder what it was.

shadow initially thought the spray was some diversion tactic to keep him from getting too close to eggman. since it was just one of his bases and he wasn't found there, shadow had left in search of where eggman could really be when he runs into amy and there the story starts.

"did sonic ever tell shadow about what was really going on?"

probably not as shadow yeeted himself into space before sonic could get the chance. i'm sure he found him eventually and told him the truth. shadow is gonna avoid that blue payaso for a while after that.

ok but can we talk about Sonic's characterization in Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog for a minute?

Spoilers ahead

Sonic only appears in about a third of the Murder of Sonic game, but his characterization in there is one of my FAVORITE characterizations that I've seen in him in years. Yes, even slightly beating Frontiers (and I adore Frontiers, just for the record). Sonic here embodies all the things I love most in him. It's amazing. Here's a list of why he's great

He is unassuming.

From the very beginning of this game, Sonic is so humble. Like, actually humble.

When the conductor speaks with him and thanks him genuinely for fighting against Eggman, Sonic doesn't make a snarky face and be like "all in a day's work!" or something humble-braggy like that (which frankly is something I feel he would do in the comics). Instead, Sonic is surprised and genuinely expresses how it's no big deal and that he's just glad the conductor and his family are safe.

Sonic is just a guy who loves adventure. He's not trying to get attention or impress anybody—he's just happy people are safe and well. I love how that is shown here. He doesn't need to tell people how selfless and kind and good he is, he just is. Sonic doesn't need or want to tell people what he stands for. He doesn't care what others think. He doesn't think about his identity constantly; he just is. (In my opinion, people who feel the need to constantly tell you what their character is like rarely actually have the traits they describe. If they actually are those things, it will come out naturally in their speech and actions.) In this game, Sonic simply is. What is this, late 2000s Sonic?? It's amazing.

2. He is encouraging in a private way.

One of the biggest reasons Sonic felt off to me in Forces (even though I have a soft spot for that game) is because there, he constantly spouts off in a very public way stuff about friendship and not letting fear own you and how 'we can do anything if we stick together', etc. Sonic does believe all of those things, and he is definitely optimistic, but it's largely internal. It's instinctive. Sonic loves to encourage people around him, but he does it on an individual, one-on-one basis. He does this with Shahra in Secret Rings, with Merlina in Black Knight, regularly with Tails, and here with the main character when they get concerned about how they weren't assertive enough when they first felt Sonic was in danger.

Sonic doesn't just brush off the main character's concern either. He addresses and recognizes it for what it is, empathizing with them and helping them feel understood. Only after that does he recommend a way forward in his wonderful Sonic way, which encourages the main character and helps them find strength. It's so natural and it's awesome!

3. Sonic is selfless, also in an unassuming way.

When Sonic starts coming to, after briefly confirming Espio hit him with the dart (since Tails asked), Sonic instantly focuses on the safety of his friends.

He hasn't fully recovered yet at all and he IMMEDIATELY focuses on protecting his friends and it's AWESOME. He can't even fully speak at this point and just ajsahdfjadsjlajf. This aspect of Sonic is much more consistently done in the games and was beautifully done in Frontiers, so it's not nearly as big a deal here but I am still so happy about the consistency.

4. Sonic is SO AMAZING AND SWEET WITH HIS DEAR FRIEND AMY.

Need I say more? :)

This game was released as a joke, and yet it was incredible??? EVERYONE was so well characterized in this! I'm gonna be thinking about this game for a very long time.

If any of the creators see this, thank you so so SO much for making this game awesome! :D

Its about time i give my two cents on this tbh.

LETS GO!!

SONADOW:

I can't honestly say something that hasn't been said before, because this ship is massive. And for a good reason. Its just the epitome of all the things I like. Rivals to friends to lovers, red and blue, opposing yet complementary personalities, good chemistry, the list goes on and on.

Its just that mutual respect yet banter that always gets me. I've TRIED abandoning ship, trust me. But this ship was just tailored to my tastes, and i cant get rid of the brainrot so much that it has become a problem :)

2. TAILSMO:

MMMMM THE PAIN. I love this ship because its so innocent and cutsey while being absolutely depressing!

Cosmo deserved SO MUCH MORE than what she got, and to this day it makes me so sad we never got Sonic X season 4 in where Cosmo comes back as a robot or something. The seed she left at the end too! They Absolutely wanted to bring her back and i will forever be sad about it.

HI HELLO IM SORRY THIS IS SO LATE!! i didn’t know how to answer it and then i got busy and then i forgot but i’m here now!

and tbh i still don’t entirely know how to answer it becus im not someone who makes headcannons very often. i usually just see some on my feed and be like “oh yeah that’s so them” and then immediately forget about it LMAO but i do have a couple even tho they are a bit basic and so i’ll try to describe those few in as great detail as possible

knuckles and amy are sibling 100%. they have that dynamic for sure! they train together and they tease each other. amy’s in the small demographic of few people he trusts too. many have also pointed out that they look similar and some people hc her as part echidna which im not really opposed to either

amy and shadow are definitely besties. whenever sonic is too stubborn to do “girly” things such as try on makeup for example, shadow would do that with her instead. he doesn’t care about his public image unlike sonic. music is something that brings them together too, seeing as we already know that they’re both swifties and went to hot honey! and she was the one who brought him back to his senses in the ending of SA2 (which btw im praying that the third movie has that scene aughdkftk). shadow has a clear soft spot for her that can only be brought out by amy. i feel like the next follow up question would be if i ship them and the answer is…not really?! i think it would be a situation where maybe amy is a bit touchy at times without realizing it and shadow blushes, or shadow does stuff to make sonic jealous (to clarify them hanging out in general is purely becus shadow wants to -not just an act so he can get back at sonic- but i think it would be funny if he would take the opportunity to brag about it when sonic gets on his nerves). i do not think either of them would actually date tho even with these one off situations and they are way better as platonic besties fr ong ‼️

this one is a bit random but i’ve always thought of amy being like… a starbucks addicted girly (in the world of mobius- not irl where they could possibly be funding a genocide 😭). and it’s kinda an ironic thing in my mind. yes, she’s the least ordinary girl you could get: wields a giant hammer, incredibly strong, is hyperfixated on and can use tarot cards as weapons, and has an indescribable intuition. however, calling back to the events of SA1, she really is just a normal hedgehog at the end of the day trying to lead a normal life. she had to learn all of these attributes, she wasn’t really born with an ability like the rest of team sonic. she also lived in an apartment for part of sonic x (i think?? haven’t watched the full series and i don’t remember everything) and actually liked it. so i think she would really enjoy simple more earth like customs. i think she honestly might be embarrassed of this fact too, seeing as she’s come all this way in her life just to resort to her old ways of living.

(…okay i’m gonna be honest that last one was a bit of a stretch and it originated from me and my friend calling her a basic white girl at one point as a joke LMAO but then i thought more about it and it kinda made sense once i put it into context)

the last one is a concept i kinda stole from a comic i saw a long time ago (i have no idea of the username- but if someone does lemme know). it was the idea that sonic started liking amy once she had started to move on, how the “chasing” kinda switched roles, and after she dialed down her “fangirling”. how sonic now wants her to be obsessed after she’s made so much progress in being her own person. i kinda wrote a fanfic based off of this and expanded upon my interpretation of it through amy’s POV. although i never posted it, i think the words i chose still capture it well so i’m just gonna copy and paste that:

“When Amy started to slowly change her childish and obnoxious mannerisms towards Sonic, he immediately felt more comfortable around her, and even started subtly reciprocating his feelings to her. Amy was obviously maturing no doubt about it, but she felt as if she had lost a part of herself in doing so. That side of her that would boldly protect and proclaim her love to him. That side to her that wouldn’t stop until she got her way. That side of her that was, as Jewel stated “…constantly following him”. She felt as if she had given up so much of her personality just to feel less incomplete, to have that soulmate she always dreamed about. On top of that, Sonic loved to come and go as he pleases. She knows that he was always going to be the adventuring type, but she wish more often that he would make an effort to chat or to invite her to tag along. Chaos knows when she tries to plan anything with him, she’s too paranoid for her own good, wondering if he’ll instantly interpret it as a date and chicken out.”

and if it wasn’t obvious already- i take a lot of what is said in the twitter takeovers, tailstube, and idw comics to heart becus i think they have the most genuine and interesting versions of these characters and tell us about small details that we wouldn’t otherwise know. i not only make this info my hcs but also like to expand upon them and use them in my evidence- so that’s what most of the things i said above are referencing.

Amy Rose is not a fangirl

She was never created to be a Sonic fangirl. She was created to be the Minnie Mouse to Sonic's Mickey Mouse, his love interest. Her being a "fangirl" was a misconception(or maybe a lie) that was made up by Archie comics (and possibly by extension, SOA), and that's the only piece of media where she was referred as one (+ the encyclospeedia but then again, it got a fair number of things wrong). None of the game manuals ever even once stated that she was a fangirl, just an energetic girl who is in love.

And she's also NOT obsessed with Sonic. She's just very(extremely) expressive about her feelings, and she isn't afraid to show it (among with other feelings), and that's why I don't like her current potrayal, especially in Frontiers where she felt so boring and bland. Her energy, her big personality, her undying love for Sonic is so absent in this game, and don't understand why so many said she's developed, or "matured" where in any case, they just took away a unique aspect of her character, and changed her just for those who didn't like her to begin with, and now instead of embracing her love for Sonic, she acts shy about it which is definitely NOT Amy at all. Sonic is supposed to be the shy one between the two, not Amy.

I'm honestly sick of hearing fans referring to her as things like "She's a fangirl", "an obsessive stalker", or "a yandere" when none of those terms are related to her at all. The word she is related to, is "genki". Which is a japanese term that refers to someone who is energetic, fun and full of life, which is what she is and supposed to, but now she's just the girl character with zero personality. At least TMOSTH got her character right again, and IDW to some extension.

I just want to get this off my chest and let it know that this thing of "Amy is a fangirl and obessed stalker" is not true. But of course there's gonna people in this fandom will not listen and still think otherwise because their inability to accept certain facts. But whether they want to believe or not, Amy was never a crazy stalkerish fangirl with a celebrity crush. She's a girl who has genuine love for a boy, and she just wants nothing more than to join him on his adventure.

Oh, this ought to be fun XD I don't mind at all. Send all the asks you like, I like to talk about my interests. I tend to ramble, so excuse my long texts. Gonna insert a break line so I don't torture my followers (that sentence makes it sound like I'm running a cult.)

Why do you personally ship Sonamy? What got you into Sonamy?

These two are connected, so it's fair to answer them both in one go. I'm very new to the fandom, unlike most of the people I've met who've been here for as long as they can remember. I originally had no interest in the franchise. Yeah, I played some games and watched the anime a few years back and had some cheap plastic toys from fast-food kiddie meals, but the franchise never stuck with me back then.

I got reintroduced through Sonic Prime around last year, which led to me reading the IDW comics, which is where I started getting into SonAmy. I really liked Amy in particular; surprising, seeing as she hadn't been my favorite character as a child. I liked Tails and Silver more back then, but the comic solidified Amy as my number one. In every fandom I've been in (HTTYD, MHA) I almost always gravitate toward characters who embody love, and that's the core of Amy.

Sonic was harder for me to decipher at first, seeing as he's more of a person who shows his emotions through action rather than words (in some iterations, at least.) But seeing him be more receptive in the comics and treating her better in more recent media portrayals piqued my interest because this wasn't how I remembered these two from when I was a kid. Seeing the progression from how their dynamic started to how it became made me feel proud of them.

And I'm one of those who likes to hypothesize that their affection used to be more one-sided but became mutual over time. Things change. Feelings change. People change. And I love that.

What’s your favorite moment between the two?

This. I think this is when I started seeing the ship as something I'd like. I've inserted the second panel as well because, while I know the first one is a no-brainer for some SonAmy shippers, I don't see many of them bringing up the follow-up panel.

Before this scene, Sonic kept rejecting Amy's proposal to go back to the Resistance with her (he had his reasons, as he saw investigating the circumstances of Eggman's absence and the waves of Badniks as a higher priority. Get to the snake's head to find the root of the problem.) He was in a hurry to get going. It wasn't until Amy told him she loved him for who he was and that she didn't want to change him that he stopped, got a little flustered, and proposed she come with him instead.

And she declined. She, too, had priorities.

Before this moment, it was possible he didn't see having both Amy and his stubborn way of doing things his way possible, but after, it might've finally clicked in his head that, Oh wait, I can have both? He's asked Amy to come along with him for other adventures afterward.

Also, can I just say how much I appreciate Sonic (who has a history of being touch averse) being more welcoming to her affection? Cause I do.

Okay, switching to Frontiers:

This scene is mostly quiet (I like nonverbal communication in general) and I found it too adorable to not mention. It's just for a few seconds, but the way Sonic does a little giddy skip when she waves him over, and the the fact that he just smiled so innocently the whole time he made his way over is just pure sweetness.

This short little misunderstanding/confrontation. This one's just plain fun for me. Sonic's impatience and inability to articulate his reasoning leads to him sounding like he's abandoning the Koco Amy really wants to help. She's putting the Koco before herself when Sonic's just worried about her. As soon as the misunderstanding is cleared up, Amy calms down, seeing it from his point of view now. It's a subtle little exchange, but knowing how these two used to not be great at communication in past games, and seeing them now deescalate a little misunderstanding this calmly brings me joy.

With each Koco the characters help, there's a certain theme associated between the Koco and Sonic's friends. The inventor Koco and Tails, trying to be of use to others; the soldier Kocos and Knuckles, both who had their people wiped out. For Amy, the Koco (the only Koco who goes by they/them, so that's what I'll be using for them here) is trying to reunite with their lover who had gone into battle. Throughout the game, Amy in her ghostly form can't touch anyone, and she expresses symptoms of dissociation, of feeling 'detached', that she's flying in a dream, but she wishes to just land.

Remember, Amy is a physically affectionate person, but she can't do much of anything, let alone feel anyone, in this situation. She has to leave it to her love, Sonic, to go into battles. She knows all too well how the Koco was feeling, being separated from their lover. When Amy and Sonic watch the Koco reunite with their partner for the last time, it hits Amy hard, and Sonic knows how affected she is by this. He gives her some time to grieve because he knows her well enough to understand this hit her hard. He tells her, "They're together now." And that's all that matters. And I love that scene. It's so mild compared to what others in the community might bring up, but I'm a sucker for the quieter moments like this.

So I’ve been going through all of The Bumblekast, Ian Flynn’s and Kyle “KyleJCrb” Crouse’s podcast, and cherry-picking the questions that interest me (as it’s a QnA podcast). One question answered in the April 24th, 2023 episode (source) was the following:

“The IDW original cast are all great characters, but it feels like they haven't had a lot of chances to have their relationships with the main game cast explored much so far. So to keep it fairly concise, let's stick with the core four for now(Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles). Which member (s) of the IDW cast would you personally like to explore their relationships with and what kind of dynamic do you think they would have with them? For example, I think Tails and Tangle would have a really fun dynamic.”

At timestamp 18:30, Kyle asks Ian, “What about Lanolin and Amy?” and Ian’s response was so validating:

Let’s just say that I’ve been cooking with someone in my DMs and I think we’re on to something based on Ian’s seeming intentions—and I think we’re gonna see it soon, too.

I’m not nearly as angry about Lanolin as a character existing in her current state if the intention is for her to be put in her place. Because that’s means there IS an intention for her and she IS meant to irritate the reader because she IS supposed to be in the wrong.

If the comic ultimately plans to make a statement against Lanolin’s behaviour to teach some lesson about how you shouldn’t impose yourself/your opinions on others, then I am all for it. And for all the reasons Ian notes, I think Amy to be the one to take that stand makes a lot of sense (and is something that I actually predicted).

Here’s hoping Lanolin gets the development she deserves and that she’s not just a wasted character.

So yes, I saw the new pages, and as it turns out I was right about Sonic! As suspected, he’s hiding how he really feels about his new bodily features, and I think he’ll continue to do so for the rest of the comic. The finale for this series is right around the corner, and this issue is gonna have a lot of Eggman fighting, so based on what we already know… Yeah. Unless Sonic’s development is intended to be kinda rushed or last-minute, I don’t think he’s going to stop faking his optimism. It also has to be remembered that Sonic doesn’t always have to fake said optimism because he is at heart a hero and a snarky little gremlin. During the earlier days of the comic, Sonic was seen being elated at the prospect of Shadow willingly keeping a secret for him. Bro danced and sang all the way home just because someone was being nice to him. But even still, he’ll most likely continue faking his true emotions at least until the very end of the comic when things go back to normal for him. Because at the end of the day, Sonic is a happy little guy who just does what’s best for him and his friends, and that is that.

About the secret base, I honestly find it so funny and so realistic that the Chaotix have to basically beg for new cases in order to pay for their home and the secret base. It’s like families who thought they’d have enough for two homes but then a year or two goes by and they’re like “Oh crap, we’re broke.” It makes so much sense and it’s so funny to me! Meanwhile the others just appreciate the fact that they have a secret base and not the fact that they pay for both homes. 🤣

Chaotix: 🥲 Yeah yeah we’re fine we’re not broke we’re totally alright 👍🥲

OH AND HERE IS SOMETHING I JUST THOUGHT OF. There is of course a reason why the Chaotix have a secret base, and I wondered for a second why they would need it in the first place. They’re detectives, journalists, problem-solvers. In their field of work, it doesn’t take too much effort to become targets of the government. So, in case they got noticed by either GUN or some other important people, they have a back-up place where they could continue their work in secret. I think they specifically anticipated GUN, because they make a point to mention them in their explanation in the newest page. Probably not something SuperEm thought too hard on, but uh. I did. So… Guess I did their job for them???? idk I thought it would be cool to flex my worldbuilding skillz

Now I wanna talk about Rouge here. She, along with Amy, know far more than they let on and I’m wondering if that will have a part to play in Sonic’s story moving forward. In the newest page, we see him standing awkwardly and trying to grasp the fact that his friends knew about him for a while! He figured Tails might have taken the hint a while ago because he knows Tails better than anyone, but Amy?? That’s a different story. The two haven’t properly interacted in a while, almost 2 years (Or maybe 1 year I’m terrible at this) in our time and a week or two in their time. Amy and Rouge have been investigating Dark Gaia and Sonic’s new form for probably a month or so, meaning that they’ve known for a long, long time! I think Knuckles and the Chaotix were the only ones left in the dark the longest. So if Sonic were to find out about this, how would he react?? I’m thinking it wouldn’t be too different to his reaction about Tails and everyone else knowing, but him and Amy have had a rocky relationship status over the years, so it could also be different. I doubt we’ll get to see anything since it doesn’t make much of a difference to the blue blur at this point in the comic, but if we do I’m excited to see how he’ll react!

Now I’m going back to Sonic for a bit because I noticed something intriguing about him in the newest page. In the first panel, we see him standing awkwardly with his hands tied behind his back, fidgeting with his fingers impatiently. Then we see him immediately walk over to Shadow, who’s waiting for him outside. When he opens the curtain, we see him squint upwards towards the sky, a warm light seeping onto his face and his whole stature seeming softer. (For lack of a better word) Thematically, this sequence of movement/expressions is used to indicate a character’s growth, or to just show that they are willing to become better. I mean, that’s my takeaway from that. I’m not a theatre/film professional. All I do is stare at animations and talk about each frame as if I know stuff. But for me that’s the kind of vibe I’m getting from this page, that Sonic is learning or growing, and that he’s willing to step out into the light and be fine with who he is. Earlier on in the comic, he would’ve requested for Shadow to come inside or for him to not be seen by others, but now that he’s been through quite a lot and after being appreciated by the small snowy village, he feels much better about himself and is thus willing to just. Walk outside for a bit and talk to someone. Sonic is learning how to be around people again, learning to trust others with his secrets, and I love that for him.

Again this most likely is not SuperEm’s intention and I highly doubt those were the actual the thematically correct rules, so if anyone is reading this and is a film/comic geek, please Please PLEASE correct me via a reblog or a comment. I need some correction desperately please. I don’t wanna spew incorrect information.

Now, I would go ahead and talk about Shadow because he clearly has a lot going on in his brain, but OH MY GOD THIS THING IS HUGE. PROBABLY THE BIGGEST ASK IVE EVER WRITTEN HERE ON THIS FINE WEBSITE CALLED TUMBLR. So please do yourself a favor and give your eyes a break because holy crap I did not skip any corners for this one. Your pupils will thank you later, I promise. Go read a real book or go outside or something, please.

i think it is interesting how split the opinions are on sonic having learned nothing throughout the story and sonic finally having accepted his flaw and adapting. the mirror snap has divided the thoam theory community like no other askfjhasjkfhajk

who says they're paying for that run down place though? trust me i think super hard about literally everything, im sometimes embarrased abt it bc literally no one ever points most of my little details out but it makes me happy to connect dots so i just keep doing it

though sonic already reacted in a way, he knows everyone knew. granted the explaination happened off screen because quite frankly i didnt want the same conversation to happen twice back to back with the end of issue 8 and the beginning of issue 9, its better to just fill in the blanks yourself with everything.

the way i wrote sonic's emotions after waking up hopefully convey everything going through his mind well. there's a whole lot more pages to this so rest assured it's not over! your interpretation definitely makes sense! though i'd def disagree with the idea that in an earlier state of the comic sonic would've called for shadow to come inside? if his secret came out earlier in the comic he would still have reacted similarly and learned his lesson equally. the difference with the way it is in the comic is that he learned more about himself, and shadow, by dragging out the resolution to his (non)problem

IDW'S SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, ISSUE #72 - THOUGHTS

WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD

We're back with another thrilling installment of "Tay Sits Down to Write the Review Hours Before the Next Issue Releases!"

Lemme start by saying, the cover art for this one, by Natalie Haines, absolutely rules. Jet and the Phantom Rider circling each other while lightning strikes a Surge-shaped storm cloud in the background is so cool out of context, and even cooler in.

This issue, to me, the beginning of what I'm calling the Phantom Riders arc, following up the Extreme Competition arc from the last three issues, and looking to be the climactic story of the Clean Sweepstakes saga.

As is often the case with the first issue of any arc, this one is a bit of a slower one, not quite as thrilling as any issue of the arc before. It goes by quick, but there's still a ton of neat stuff in here to dig into, most of it is just... quieter in nature.

The story opens up with Surge and Kit marching right into Clutch's office and declaring that they will no longer be participating in his operation, desiring to leave behind their lives of villainy and pursue the much more fulfilling roles of heroes. It, uh... doesn't go well for them.

What's interesting here is that Clutch never actually makes any form of direct threat about what he'll do if they leave. He doesn't fly off the handle and smash anything to make an example for them. He doesn't even raise his voice.

And that's one of the things I love about Clutch as a villain. His entire strength is manipulation. He knows exactly which strings to pull, exactly which tone to employ to keep his operatives in mind. As I've said before, he doesn't have an army the size of the Eggman Empire, strength to contend with the Deadly Six, or an intellect on the level of Dr. Starline. But he has one thing none of them do - an unrivaled understanding of his resources, and exactly how to make use of them. There's just something so fascinating to me about a Sonic the Hedgehog villain who's entire strength comes from pulling strings and getting into peoples' heads.

I love this guy! I hope he doesn't... y'know... die at the end of this saga, because frankly, I'd love to see him return again in the future.

We also get Sonic on the run, trying to stay under the radar of the Babylon Rogues, until...

Real world years after their introduction, Sonic finally meets Nite and Don! I'm a huge fan of this scene - partly because I really like Nite and Don, and I'm always happy to see more of them, and partly because I love this kinda thing! Main characters from the games meeting side characters from the comics that they've never run into despite them having been around for a while! These path-crossings between characters who are well-established but don't usually interact is something I love in any story, but especially in Sonic, because it gives me an opportunity to see these characters I've known and loved for such a long time explored in ways I've never seen before! This goes a long way toward making the world feel more lived in, and is the kind of thing I'd been hoping we'd see more of as the comic got to have more and more continuity under its belt.

Also, I know it's a little thing that has already been shared a lot, but I love how visibly angry Sonic is in this panel. I've been gushing over any little hint of Sonic's 90's edge being brought forth in this saga, so any more of it is always gonna get me right where it counts.

Here, Nite clues Sonic in to the fact that, in addition to Amy and Tails, the Chaotix are also looking into Clean Sweep, which means we will more than likely be seeing them at some point in this arc.

(Side note: Nite's mug has a modified version of the Crush 40 logo on it, and the poster behind him has an edit of their eponymous album. This is awesome and Crush 40 is awesome.)

This is cool because I love the Chaotix, Vector specifically being one of my favorite characters, but it does worry me that they might be showing up... a little too much? Maybe it's just me, but if feels like they show up a lot over the course of IDW Sonic, especially lately between the Misadventures arc, A Very Chaotix Halloween, and the Spring Broken special. I've gotten into it a bit in other posts, but aside from Sonic Tails, Amy, and Eggman, I prefer most Sonic characters to be "sometimes food."

The cast is so big that you can constantly keep revolving side characters in and out, occasionally throwing in new ones, and go a good while between repetitions, which, in my opinion, only helps to make the appearances of these characters to feel more impactful and, again, make the world feel more lived in. Sonic has so many friends that he doesn't always see many of them that often. It makes sense to me, but maybe it's only me.

Anyway, it'll seem neat to see how they play into everything that's going on here. What's interesting to me is, back in Misadventures, when Clutch hires the Babylon Rogues to steal Echidna artifacts from Angel Island, he says that he did so to keep certain parties occupied while he conducted his business with the Restoration - setting things up for the Clean Sweepstakes. I'd assumed the parties he spoke of were the Chaotix specifically, whom Knuckles recruited to help retrieve his stolen relics.

However, if this was his intention, it seems the Chaotix have gotten involved anyway. Was this a simple oversight on his part? Were his efforts in vain? Or is something more going on? Was the party he sought to distract actually Knuckles? Does his grand plan involve some kind of play for the Master Emerald? If so, that'd be a very bold move for him. For now, though, the best we can do is speculate until we get a better look at the scope of Clutch's scheme - I will say though (and this is a bit of a spoiler within a spoiler), Evan Stanley has posted some WIP pencils for upcoming issues that appear to be part of this same arc, and one drawing among them does seem to show an Emerald present, so it's pretty safe to assume at least one Emerald, be it Chaos or Master, is definitely in the mix here.

Meanwhile, poor Surge is going through it. She lays out exactly what I have found tragically beautiful about her entire character arc, especially over the course of this saga: She envies the freedom of Sonic, but can never have it. No matter what, someone is always seeking to use her for their own ends, and if they can't, the make sure that she can never have the freedom she seeks by damaging her life beyond any hope of repair. It's a surprisingly deep and sad thing to see played out in the Sonic universe, and at the point she's at, I'm not sure there's any good way out for her.

That being said, Kit seems to have his own course of action in mind, and I'm excited to see exactly what it is, because while Kit was designed to be the reason to Surge's rush, he's always seemed to be the one capable of going even further off the deep end when pushed. He always seems to have some pretty extreme levels of violence in mind when he gets quiet and focused. He's kind of creepy like that, and who knows what he's got in store. Whether it works out in his favor or not, I don't imagine it looks good for Clutch, who, like so many others before him, has likely underestimated the little fox.

The last scene of this issue has Amy, Tails, and Belle trying to make their way to Jewel's office to expose Clutch, only to be intercepted by Clean Sweep Inc.'s mascots, who reveal themselves to be none other than Rough and Tumble. We knew these two were working under Clutch, but they haven't shown up in a bit, and it left me wondering exactly where they fit into Clutch's machinations here. Turns out they were right in the spotlight the entire time. Makes sense, given the way they're usually played for comic relief.

They pretty immediately call for backup - which is funny to me. It's characteristically underhanded of them, sure, but it also shows that they've been gaining some level of understanding of just how outmatched they are when dealing with Sonic and co. I did notice that Tumble says they have more infiltrators on their hands, implying they've already dealt with a few before these three arrived. I'd say it's pretty reasonable to assume they're referring to the Chaotix, so it's likely Amy, Tails, and Belle will be running into them soon.

Story-wise, this issue has a lot of neat stuff to dig into, just not quite as much forward momentum as recent ones. And that's good! You have to have setup to have payoff! Plus, these quieter scenes provide a great opportunity for character exploration, an opportunity this issue takes full advantage of. Just about every character gets plenty to do here, plenty to show us who they are when they're not in the heat of action.

In terms of art, this issue is everything the previous arc would lead you to expect. Aaron Hammerstrom continues to bring us some absolutely gorgeous pencils, with some really solid inks from Matt Froese, an artist I've been following since long before their work on IDW Sonic, and have been delighted to see show up in the comic's credits.

As I mentioned previously, we seem to have some upcoming pencils from Stanley herself, and while I love Stanley's art and am always excited to see more of it, it does make me a little sad that we won't be seeing as much from Hammerstrom or Min Ho Kim. They truly have become my absolute favorite artists working on this series - even over legends like Yardley and Hesse. Guess I couldn't see their pencils exclusively forever, though. Whatever the case, Stanley's upcoming stuff looks good, and I'm excited to see more of it, as well as what happens next, which I'll be seeing in... *checks watch* ... About an hour.

Sonamy - One Shot

To me, Forces kind of felt like it could be a bit of a turning point in Sonic and Amy's relationship. Him being less reluctant and her toning down her feelings.. Just making things easier for them to be around each other, be it game or even the IDW comics. So I wrote this with that in mind of how Sonic became more open around Amy.

How long had it been since Sonic was thrown into that cell? What day was it? Or rather, what week? His injuries from the fight had healed, now dealing with the ones from his cuffs. For just energy rings, they were surprisingly tight. He could feel them rubbing over his fur onto his skin. 

One careless battle, and now the whole planet was at war. His friends were fighting, and Sonic was trapped. Granted, Eggman had captured him before, but never this efficiently. He had never been held longer than a day, but even with no windows or clocks he knew he had been here for a long time. What he wouldn’t give to be free again. The energy in his body screaming to be used, to run. He never stayed still this long before. He was going to go crazy at the rate. 

Suddenly, Sonic heard bashing in the next room. A familiar sound of smashing robots behind the closed doors.  The unmistakable “piko” echoed. The doors fell right over, and a pink hedgehog emerged. 

“Amy!” 

“Sonic!” Amy cried out. She ran right up to bars, smiling ear to ear at the sight of her hero. Though this time she was the one doing the rescuing. 

“This feels oddly familiar,” Sonic teased. 

“You mean when me and Tails rescued you from Prison Island? Though you ended up busting out of the cell on your own back then.” “Well, my hands are a bit tied at the moment.” He lifted his arms, indicating the blue rings keeping them, as well as his legs, bound together. 

Amy lowered her head. She averted her gaze slightly. “I’m sorry we took so long in finding you.” 

“Don’t sweat it,” Sonic tried to reassure. “You had your own problems to deal with.” Eggman had been showing him video footage of the war, and he knew it was taking all their efforts to fight back. “You’re here now, and that’s what matters.” 

The comfort managed to cheer Amy up a bit. She smiled gently, looking back at him. With that, she lifted her hammer. “You might want to try to step back.” 

“Not gonna say I owe you a date for busting me out?” 

Amy shrugged. “I think you spent enough time being locked up. I’ll let you off easy for once.” She swung her hammer as hard as she could, knocking the bars down with a single hit. Sonic winced a bit as the metal on metal rung throughout the room. Once the sounded dissipated, he looked back at the pink heroine and grinned. 

“Shame, I was half-tempted to agreeing this time.” 

Amy blinked in response, then puffed her cheeks a bit as her hammer vanished into thin air. “Well then,” she spoke with hands on her hips, “guess I have to settle for a hug!” 

She ran at Sonic with outstretched arms and… 

“Wake up, rodent. Mealtime.” 

Sonic stirred from his sleep and slowly opened his eyes. A dream… 

He sat up as Zavok opened the cell slightly and left a tray on the floor. By the time Sonic managed to make his was over, as fast as he could with his legs barely allowed to move through the restraints, the cell was closed once again. As usual, a glass of water, a stale sandwich, and a small cup of yogurt.

“Egghead still hasn’t upgraded his menu, huh?” the hedgehog sassed. “Just saying you guys could give a little more variety. Make a chili dog special or something.” But Zavok did not respond. He just turned away and let Sonic eat. 

This was all too strange. Zavok working for Eggman again was weird enough, but the Zeti hardly ever made conversation with him. Just dropped off his food and left. Or occasionally, gave Sonic a knuckle sandwich right to the gut. Eggman’s way of keeping the hedgehog from getting any bright ideas about escaping. But the lack of dialogue from Zavok didn’t make him feel real. Did Eggman find a new way to control him? Sonic hoped for his sake he wasn’t the next test subject. 

Moving on, Sonic sat down as comfortably as he could and started to eat. The food was gross, and he hated succumbing to Eggman’s terms, but what choice did he have? He already tried the hunger strike thing, and when it became clear his friends weren’t coming right away, he had to scrap that plan and make do with what he had. They were fighting against all Eggman’s forces, so a rescue op probably wasn’t soon. They might not even know where Sonic was being held. Heck, he sure didn’t. At this point, he could only dream of rescue. 

The dreams varied. Sometimes Tails being his savior, Knuckles with a small army, or Amy. Lately, it was usually the latter. They all ended the same way; with him waking up just before she could reach him. Sonic was never really an affectionate guy, but even he was beginning to long for that comfort. Something that felt real.  

“Amy…” the hero spoke in a hushed voice. He missed her smile, the way she would take charge when she set her mind to something, and how she would do everything in her power to help others. He missed all his friends immensely, but the dream left Amy as the lingering thought. All those years he spent running from her felt so small. He really wished she was here now. “When I get out of here, I’ll start treating you better.”  

He would get out of here, he knew it. Until then, Sonic had to keep his spirit and confidence up. No matter how difficult it got.

It almost felt like a miracle to see everyone again. Sonic still couldn’t believe he was locked up for six months. You’d think he would want to take it easy, but nope. Sonic needed to get back in action. To burn off all that energy he still felt trapped inside him. But he could wait a bit for that to see his friends. He was hurt to find out Tails wasn’t with the Resistance, but he knew his brother would find his way back.

“You sure you’re ready for this?” Knuckles asked just as they got off the ship. He was the one who offered a chance to get Sonic back out in the field, but he didn’t want to push the hedgehog too much. 

“Just get me a decent chili dog, and I’ll be good.” With the world literally falling apart, Sonic didn’t have time to rest. It burned him up knowing everyone was fighting and he couldn’t help.  

“Alright, I did ask. But let us know if any-“ 

“SONIC!” 

Sonic turned to see Amy standing in the doorway. He heard her voice on the new guy’s communicator but seeing her in person made something in his mind freeze. 

Suddenly he felt like he was back on the Death Egg. Was this another dream? he thought. Everything then just felt detached. Maybe he wasn’t saved. Maybe he was still locked up, and this was just more wishful thinking. When was he going to wake up? When will these delusions stop tormenting him with false hope? 

But then, Sonic found himself in Amy’s embrace. It was tight, but not suffocating. She was crying into his shoulder. “You’re alive!” she sobbed. “It’s really you!” 

Sonic’s dreams never made it this far. He would always wake up before she could even touch him. Was this really happening? Slowly, he raised his arms and wrapped them around her. He could feel her, hold her. He felt her quills against his cheek, the fabric of dress against his chest, and the tears soaking his fur. It wasn’t a dream. He was really back. She was really here. 

“I thought I’d never see you again!” 

Sonic relaxed himself against Amy’s form. It took him until just now for him to realize how tired he actually was (not that that was going to stop him). Still, he held onto her, almost as if letting her go would take away the sense of safety he felt. 

A light chuckle escaped his lips. Is this the first time I hugged her back? It was nice. It made his heart feel content. He’d make a better effort not to brush that off in the future. He’d let her know how much he truly appreciated having her in his life. 

“It’s good to see you too, Ames.”

Then I got so engaged with the characters dynamics/interactions and the dilemma with Amy's engagement ring has made it into a full blown story! I can't wait to share! I'm so close to what it's all been leading upto it's all gonna be worth it! 👀💍 I was on and off through the years with this comic ,you can even see the artstyle changes on some pages, I was dealing with alot of real life issues, moving house, 🏡 getting married! 👰Then having a child! 👶🏼💖

My husband has alot of input in this comic, we have so much fun coming up with scenarios and what's gonna happen next on each panel together, I literally met my soul mate when I was 13 at school, he loves and draws Sonic as well like me! we've been through alot! the awkward teenage years together right through to being fully grown adults,I'm 28 now so we've been together for a lonnnngggg time! 🥹💖💝 Feeling settled now I've made it my goal to finish this comic as it means alot to me. My Sonic Predictions and Hopes for 2024

Admittedly some of these are things I want to see happen rather than things that are likely to happen, but what the heck, I’ll list ‘em out and see if any of them end up coming true. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A one-shot for the comics involving either springtime or Valentine’s Day. I think spring is more likely since (1) they’re avoiding romance and Valentine’s Day is a romantic holiday, and (2) having a springtime one-shot nicely follows the trend of having Endless Summer and Winter Special one-shots.

I’m pretty pessimistic about the third movie still happening in 2024 given how stubborn the studios are being about the strikes, so I’m guessing the release date will be pushed back to 2025. However, I do think 2024 will bring us a trailer/teaser with some news about casting and whether any new characters besides Shadow will feature.

Part 3 of Sonic Prime, which will likely involve something bad happening to Shadow for reasons explained here. PLEASE LET THIS ONE BE TRUE I NEED PART 3 NOW

A DLC, update, or some kind of “Plus” pack for Sonic Superstars since that seems to be the trend now.

I doubt we’ll see much more for Frontiers since it won’t really be a new game anymore and will have already had a big update. Maybe a few minor tweaks like a new outfit or pair of shoes.

A new Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games title since 2024 will have the Paris Olympics.

More Sonic Symphony tour dates, one of them probably being New York since that’s a really big city for them to leave out.

More merchandise, possibly featuring Shadow to tie in with the third movie.

The Knuckles TV show released on DVD (hopefully).

The comics will take a darker turn again. They seem to alternate between dark, serious arcs and fun, light-hearted arcs. Right now, they’re on Misadventures, which is fun and light-hearted, so I suspect that at some point in 2024, things will turn serious again.

I also suspect that Starline might be revealed to have survived after all, but that could just be wishful thinking on my part since I like his character and was sad to see such a cool villain go so quickly.

Another visual novel or some kind of storybook thing that builds on the success of Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. No way is something that successful gonna be a one-time deal.

A remaster or re-release/port of an older game. The titles I think are most likely are Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic and the Black Knight. Adventure 2 would tie nicely into the release of the third movie (especially if they’re adapting its storyline) and they clearly know how popular it is since they released a new figure for it and put City Escape in one of their other games. Heroes is possible since it’s 20+ years old, had some songs included in Frontiers, and the franchise as a whole seems to be leaning toward having more playable characters and team/partner-based play. Murder and Superstars lean into this hard, Origins added Amy, and Frontiers will soon have other playable characters too, so I think they’re testing the waters for a game with an ensemble cast. The launch of the Fast Friends comic series on their socials also shows a lean in this direction. Black Knight is possible since 2024 would be the game’s 15th anniversary, the storybook setup was well received in Murder, and they seem to be calling attention to it by putting its characters in their mobile games.

Again, these are just guesses and I could be wrong about all of them. We shall see… 👀

Y’know what this post is gonna seem silly to my followers and mutuals who do know anything about sonic but I keep seeing people (who will never see this post bc we don’t follow each other) get some basic stuff abt the series wrong when they’re new to the fandom so I’m just gonna set some stuff straight, just put it on the record:

If you google “how old is sonic” it will say like 35. Sonic the series is more than 30 years old. Sonic the character is 15.

The reason Sonic is such a “bad boyfriend” to Amy is that they’re not dating; Amy has a crush on him they both know is unrequited and they both seem to have accepted that, though it doesn’t stop Amy from being especially lovey-dovey over Sonic at times.

Knuckles is an echidna. This is a real animal. Look them up, they’re very cute.

Amy is a hedgehog. She does look like an echidna to the point she’s been theorized to be a hybrid, but canonically, she’s a hedgehog.

Shadow is not 50 nor is he 65. He is intentionally framed as being from 50 years ago, not 50+ years old. It’s akin to Aang- he was in cryostasis for 50 years and didn’t age at all. He’s often believed to be ageless, but appears to have a similar maturity level and bodily age (?) to Sonic, Knuckles and Silver.

There is no relation between Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. They’re just 3 unrelated weird hedgehogs.

No ships in the series are canon. If someone tells you they are they’re lying. Some characters canonically have crushes, but they have mandates against relationships entirely.

Shadow is implied to have PTSD. They sometimes miss the mark when writing him, but this is the core reason for his initial cold and brooding attitude.

Knuckles is black and indigenous coded. Sonic is also generally believed to be black coded as well. (autisticshadowthehedgehog has a good post on this.)

Most if not all of the characters excluding Vector, Rouge, all parents, all visibly middle aged or older characters, and maybe a couple others are children or teens. Being horny about them is generally considered weird.

Re: the IDW comics, Surge the Tenrec isn’t a Sonic clone. Tenrecs are believed to be more closely related to elephants than hedgehogs if that says enough.

They’re also a real animal. Very cute. Spiny mammals are the best

This one’s not something people get wrong but when starting the IDW comics, the metal virus story arc is often considered to be very bleak and difficult to handle, with things just constantly getting worse for the cast no matter what they do before it hits you with “next time: from bad to worse!” three quarters of the way through and you realize these characters still have something to lose and can and will lose it. It’s the closest to horror the series ever has or probably will come, though it is of course a children’s comic so that’s not necessarily saying it’s particularly horrifying, and it genuinely did get tough to read at times. A lot of fans consider it to be quite distressing or disturbing, so I’d skip it if you don’t know if you can handle that.

Anyway that’s all I can think of rn so if anyone else has anything they think should be cleared up for new fans please feel free to add on
