Have you ever read the Twelve and Toymaker comic? It gives a few more interesting looks into how the Toymaker thinks that aren’t touched on in the novelisation. Most interestingly (and the main focus of the comic) is that the Toymaker is terrified of the universe outside of the Toyroom — which seems to be defined by its walls, in the novelisation the Toymaker puts particular emphasis on the walls with the candy-striped wallpaper lined with dolls — because it has no walls and because he doesn’t (didn’t? He does in the Giggle) have much control of it.

(‘‘The Toyroom is growing old, Doctor. So ancient that it no longer functions, as either prison or playground. The barriers between the Toyroom and the wider universe are growing thin, and it is this that has allowed you to wrest control of the toys, as my power wanes. Soon, there will be no Toyroom and I shall be loose in a wild, unforgiving universe, a cosmos with no walls. I can hardly conceive of such infinite horror.’’)

(‘‘You’ve given a madman access to the entire universe! With that sort of power, think what he’ll do!’’ ‘‘That’s just it, Clara, he doesn’t want the universe. Didn’t you hear him? He’s terrified of it. He can’t bear the thought of losing his control. He needs his safety net.’’)

hello love!!! oh my goodness thank you for sending this my way, because i haven't read this comic yet but the sections you've sent me have absolutely broken my heart 💔 what an interesting look into the Toymaker's psyche…it makes perfect sense. when you're a trauma survivor of any kind, especially if you grew up in a traumatic environment, the control you're able to have over that environment (no matter how minimal) is often all that keeps you together…you have to find comfort in that there and whatever small safe space you can carve out for yourself to survive. this has given me a lot to think about, because i wrote the Toymaker with what i think was the canonisation given when he spoke to the Sixth Doctor; that the Toymaker created his Toyroom after a very long time of aimlessly using his powers, when he didn't have a concept of gameplay. there seems to be some contention about whether or not the Toymaker is the creator of the majority of older games in the universe/the concept of games (The Giggle seems to allude to that?), or if he was inspired by other beings who created the games first. i like to think it's a bit of both; that he is the originator of many early games and gameplay rules, but it was the barriers between the voidspace (and his Toyroom) which let in the ideas from other beings 👀 the idea that the Toyroom is the Toymaker's island of safety against a universe which fundamentally doesn't make sense to him is so distressing 😭💖 i think a lot of us who've gone through difficult things can relate to that experience…of having your safe place slowly eroded as circumstances change and you grow older. but it makes sense!!! if he had no one, and the only thing he could cling to were the rules of his games (seemingly the only thing which brings him joy), the inherent chaos of the universe would be terrifying to him. no matter how much he tries to make it so, the universe just isn't a game with rules that can allow him to win: it's random, and brutal. is it any wonder that he has such tantrums when he loses, or when he perceives someone to be cheating? it isn't just that he's upset about losing or bad sportsmanship...it's the literal fabric of his entire worldview being torn apart. oh lord the bit about him not accepting help unless he thinks he's won it…how familiar does that sound to those of us who were traumatised early on? needing to 'earn' things like affection, shelter, food, etc. by working twice as hard, because we feel we don't deserve it inherently...the fact that the Doctor shows the Toymaker such compassion even though the Toymaker is such a dangerous, destructive entity is a real credit to their character. i really appreciate The Giggle replicating that and showing how the Doctor empathises with the Toymaker's terror by offering to play with him...i wish we'd had more time to explore the 'vastness that will never cease'. i don't think that good or bad mean nothing to the Toymaker...i think he's petrified of it. suddenly we understand why he's so boastful about his abilities, like an arrogant child...he's asserting himself against the universe as the only safety he's ever known crumbles. god. my heart hurts - that image of him sitting with the dolls of himself and the Doctor is killing me. i am going to go and read this comic and cry now, thank you so much 😭💖 yes please do!!!! your insight into the Toymaker is fantastic and i'd love to see more character studies of him 😭💖

The British Library - The Gothic: this is a collection of fantastic articles and videos, compiled as a learning resource by the British Library. The focus is obviously British Gothic, but it features videos from leading Gothic scholar John Bowen that explain core concepts very clearly

A Short History of the Sublime: I quite like this article from the MIT Press Reader that explores the sublime in art. It is concise and references some great art!

Yeah sure! This is in reference to this and this posts.

These are all pretty 'fic style' stories, because they scaffold off pre-existing canon. It's like you're walking inside of a pre-built house and you're putting up new wallpaper and designing the rooms. Novel style is like if you're building the entire house. So these are really great for fun and if you have writer's block or have problems starting a story. They're also really good if you're practicing your dialogue, scene composition, characterization, etc - they are not good for developing skills on how to build the house, but if you're trying to work on actually making a readable story they're great methods to practice. They're also a lot easier to make good lol.

While writing these out I realized that they're almost entirely AUs. This is because I like AUs. You don't have to do AUs, you can adapt these however you want if you just like writing canon. Loser. Anyway, these are my low-effort stories:

A series of disconnected scenes that take place over a long period of time. If you have an idea in mind (or you just want to use the OG work's timeline), then you can show scenes or moments over a long period in time. For example, ages ago I wrote an AU story following the life of one character. One scene for 2008, one for 2010, one for 2012 etc.

Rewriting canon. If you have an AU idea or have a way in mind to change canon to something you think fucks harder, then you can use pre-existing episodes or season plotlines and just add your own flavor to what already exists. If you write for BNHA you aren't allowed to do this. That's the rule. How is all BNHA fic 600k AUs where one extremely minor detail is changed. God they're boring.

Alternate viewpoint/missing scene of a story you have. Like you can do this for canon too but that sounds super boring. This is actually something I do in order to help the quality of the main story - if I'm finding myself writing a super complicated character, I write another story about him from his POV to help give me a handle on him. Or write her parts of the story from her perspective. It's a writing exercise to help me figure out the character and it is also easy and fun.

"X Meets Y". Do you really like Legally Blonde? Do you think your favorite character being Elle Woods would be really funny? Stuff like that. Would it be really funny if your blorbo was Sharpay Evans? Yes it would be. Yeah I DID write a story many years ago that was "X meets Teen Beach Movie", why?

I don't know how many other people out there have extremely convoluted entire AU ideas, but if you have the whole AU in your mind then it is incredibly easy to write little stories or snippets from the AU. Like, so easy. A stand-out scene in your mind, the life of one supporting character, an alternate POV, whatever. Literally whenever I want to write something absolutely 0 effort whatsoever I go back to one of my 3 bugfuck stupid AUs and write something for them again.

This is actually something I think everybody should do, because it is basically how I learned story structure: find the trashiest, most formulaic genre you can. Watch or read something from that genre, or just collect genre conventions. Use the pre-packaged and pre-written formula to structure your own story and fill in the blanks.

(Also, these aren't very tropey or reliant on shipping/romance beats, which is nice if you want to get away from that stuff)

Nowadays, I find all of that helpful when I feel like doing something 0 effort. When I was a less experienced writer and I deadass did not know how to build a house, then these were really helpful for learning what wallpaper looks good and what arrangement of furniture creates good fung shui and what couches go best with that coffee table. They're also good passing. Seriously, these are like the most popular stories on my AO3. People eat this shit up. Why. They're so lazy.

IDK, these are what I do because they're the kinds of stories I like to write! What you find easy to write will be different. This is all a very personal list. I can see my personal thumbprint (no romance, AU central) really clearly. I'm kind of curious now: what are y'all's favorite low-effort, easy, fun stories to write?

Also as a heads up if your story doesn't have any sort of conflict in it, then it will actually very difficult to write. Trust me. Conflict makes you voom. Do it. Please. Love of god.

Adventures in MTAS datamining (pt. 1/?: art assets)

Because I am incredibly normal about this game, I’ve been poking around in the game’s files (and MTAP’s, too) pretty much ever since I got it. Unity games are pretty easy to datamine, since tools are already out there, which is incredibly fortunate for fueling the hyperfixation. I wanted to share some of the more interesting things I’ve found on my travels. Spoiler warning: There are some midgame spoilers below (i.e. starting with the water tower). There’s also one thing that might be a future spoiler, which is at the very end and marked accordingly.

General disclaimer: If you’re curious to try datamining out yourself, feel free to ask me for how-to’s, but please be careful! Never edit the game’s files directly. Make copies and back up your save files. You’ll also need a good amount of RAM (I recommend at least 16 GB) to be able to handle tools like AssetStudio, since you’ll be loading assets directly into memory. And MTAS has a lot of assets. You may also encounter unreleased future content in there...so preemptive spoiler warning for that as well.

Since there’s so much to dig through, this post will only focus on some of the art/visual things. These can either be found under StreamingAssets > AssetBundles, or StreamingAssets > AssetBundles > art_asset. I can’t really comment too much on the 3D assets (meshs, textures) since I don’t know too much about modeling, but here are some other interesting things I found!

Cutscene thumbnails

You can find thumbnails of the cutscenes without the builder in them. The in-game album uses different thumbnails, which look like screenshots taken when it’s playing for the first time (hence why skipping a cutscene won’t put it in your album). Some of them actually really nice. Wallpaper-worthy, even.

The one they use for the kidnapping cutscene is incredible.

So, uh...Qi has an alternate set of character art. No other character has one (except Elsie for story reasons). I assume this’ll be a DLC outfit, like those in MTAP? Kinda weird how only one would be loaded into the files so far. The asset name doesn’t really give any pointers, it’s just marked as “Qi2″. It only exists as character art, no model or texture or anything like that.

So is this past Qi? Future Qi?? Qi for one day if he’s forced to wear something nice for a change??? It looks like the neat and complete version of his normal outfit. You can see the same shirt and tie, same pants (except they aren’t rolled up at the ankles anymore?), same shoes. I’m also just now noticing that his suit jacket’s the same color as the mobile suit, haha funni joke. Again, not a single other character besides Elsie has an alternate outfit yet in these files. What is this for?! I have no fuckin clue, but I can say that Qi cleans up pretty nicely 👀

Edit 2: Unfortunately, as of several beta builds pre-release, full suit Qi has largely been removed. The full art version isn’t in the files anywhere, but there are still some map icons of him. Not sure if this is something for postgame content or a romantic mission they didn’t have time to add. We’ll have to see :P

Hiiii, I'm doing alright just been absolutely exhausted recently- but I finally have myself working sleeping medicine so 🤞🤞 hoping I can not be as tired

As for the improvements... I think it depends on when this all takes place, if this happens during season 1, then Eddie has most likely overheard things that Steve likes. Bands he listens to and his favorite color (though Steve often lied about that. He loves yellow and will not be truthful about it) Eddie would start with the God awful plaid wallpaper, he's heard the 'King Steves' favourite color is Navy blue- and while he has his doubts about that, that's the color he puts up instead.

Eddie's lucky, because other than house parties Steve doesn't like being at his house. He's almost always somewhere else. It gives Eddie time to also change his bed comforter to something black.. after all, he wants to have his own touch in the room aswell. No better spot than where his boy sleeps.

His next course of action would be actually decorating the walls, he's been watching Steve for a bit, even without overhearing him talking to other people he knows what he's into. And he's happy about that, because Steve at school? A notorious liar about the things he actually enjoys.

He couldn't believe it when he heard Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys playing from Steve's room, but after the 3rd time he came to the conclusion.. Steve Harrington is into fucking punk music and that's fucking hot. So he makes sure to put posters of those bands on the wall, and of course add some that Eddie likes himself..

(WHOOPS, didn't mean to take a week to get back to this! I'm hoping I can actually return to art-as-usual for a little while.)

12. Show your favourite drawing from this year (2023)

Ough, questions of favorites are tricky for me because it's hard to pick just one! However, I think I have my answer. The question isn't asking about my most popular (Matrix Barbie), most grueling (Art Fight multiattack), most experimental (Spider-Punk for style, Caduceus for medium), or best example of what I do (Izel & Yaretzi). The question asks for my favorite, which is this one from August:

I love the composition and colors on this one; they make me smile. I love the layering and texturing I did here. I love that I got to try out the Amogus technique, and it worked better than whatever I would have done instead! And I love it for what it's about: the heat and joys of summer :) Extra nice to think about on these (northern hemisphere) cold winter days.

18. Do you have any larger projects you’d like to pursue? Like comics, shortfilm, a series etc?

I've had recent-ish ideas for one-off comics (a few pages, tops) and merch sets and such, and I think it'd be neat to run a zine someday.

A few years back, I had an idea for a (fan/adaptation) TTRPG that I worked on intermittently for a while. I didn't get to the stage of making art for it, but I would definitely want to if I ever picked it up again and worked out the rest of the kinks in the mechanics/structure of gameplay. Might just want to rebuild it (from scratch) (again)...

I also have always—as in, literally since childhood—thought it'd be neat to make [art for] a video game. These days, I'm wondering if doing something like making my own visual novel would be a good fit (for doing final art in a style/medium familiar to me), or doing character design for a team that translates it to a different style/medium. I dunno! It's not a specific ambition for right now, just something that might be neat. But if inspiration strikes me or a suitable opportunity arises, I might pursue it after all!

Ahh but I think about this one and ones similar SOOO muuuuch!! My only complaint is, like....it's always the brunette or darker haired woman being more I guess dominant, vs the shy nervous blond?? Which is very accurate, Mary is quite shy, but once she gets to the point, she's unstoppable when it comes to giving out kisses to a no doubt flustered Nancy!

It's soooooo Mary and Nancy coded tho, like yesss the girls~ THE GIRLS! And the inherent shyness that would be Nancy trying to get the plethra of lipstick kisses off her from Mary before she got home, like the girl is NURVOUS and ANXIOUS and has so meny kisses on her it's wild.

hi, sorry it took a long time for me to get back at your prompt, but here it is finally. I hope this one suits your liking. this one sets in the "What if?" Universe 👀

to everyone who has sent me some asks, please be patient as I am certainly taking time in writing them as well as balancing my rl schedule. okie, without further ado, let's get to the story!

One Word Prompt 16 — Coldness

Hans feels numb, frozen perhaps, more mentally than physically. Never did he think that he would eventually fall for the future queen. Truly, madly, deeply. He feels like a fool, losing on his own game that only he knows the rules of. He has one job: to gain the trust of the reigning monarchs of Arendelle, God rests their souls, so that he can secure his place in the family and be a worthy match for the Crown Princess. Falling in love with her is never on the list, but there he is.

Sitting in silence and wrapped in his winter coat, Hans leans back against the cold wall. Across from him is the queen regent, still having her face buried into her arms, which are resting on her propped knees. Her shoulders are raising and falling more steadily now, although he can still hear her sobs once in a while. His green eyes burn holes on her platinum blonde hair, making most of this chance to project his anger for making him feel that way.

Sympathy, is that what it’s called? He isn’t sure anymore. 

He is not one to feel emotions, especially since he has been trained to not feel any when he grew up. At least, that was before he met Elsa.

Gosh, he resents her for it, for the feeling that’s plaguing his heart and his head. He will never forget what she has done to him. She has turned his world upside down, introducing him to the world full of hope and selflessness. Pretty ironic, since her parents seem to teach her to conceal her feelings and not feel; to focus on herself first and control her emotions. Hans fully supports that method, but for some reason it doesn’t apply to Elsa. Perhaps it’s because, unlike him, Elsa has never been expected to repress her feelings since the day she was born.

Hans frowns, darting his attention about the room. Snowflakes hang in the air, as if suspended by time, cold and unmoving. The floor and the wallpaper are coated with frosts and spikes to ice, with the spot she is currently occupying turns into an icy throne. His green gaze softens at the mess she has made earlier after Kai came interrupting their library date with the devastating news. She exploded, the temperature dropped so fast that Hans had no choice but to exit the room to fetch his winter coat. Why he decided to come back and stay with her, in a good distance, he doesn’t know. It seems like it’s just another side effect from having known her for months: to make him do something he doesn’t even know the reason for.

So, is this love?

The prince has to hold an urge to scoff when that thought crosses his mind. He hates realising how vulnerable he can be. Closing his eyes, briefly, he lets out a sigh. He wants to run away if he can, and maybe that way he can be himself again, selfish and unfeeling. He almost forgets how freeing it was when he wasn’t feeling so attached to something or someone. He eventually scoffs, it sounds so sharp it breaks the silence, and Hans has become more self aware. He slowly looks across the room, expecting her to glance at him with her big blue eyes that are full of wonder, but instead, he is greeted by her soft snoring. Elsa has fallen asleep.

Letting out a sigh, Hans gets up. He approaches her sleeping form, which looks like the most uncomfortable position to sleep in, his footsteps very light as if he has been trained to do it for years. The closer he gets to her body, the colder it feels, and even when he is dressed in his winter coat, Hans can still feel her coldness. His breathing hitches.

Wrapping an arm around her shoulders and placing the other underneath her calves, he then gently carries her. Her head weakly tilts upwards and he can finally see her face up close. He notices her furrowed eyebrows, down to the very faint freckles dusting her face that can only be seen from a very close distance, and eventually he notices the dried tears on her cheeks. His gaze falls to her mauve lips, pressed firmly into a thin line, and he can feel himself gulp.

This is a very, very dangerous game that I’m playing.

Hans makes his way towards her bed and puts her down so delicately. He takes off her shoes and tucks her in under the blanket. Even though he knows that she is immune to the cold, he still does it out of decency. Once he is sure that Elsa is comfortable, he takes a step back, but before he can turn to leave, she grabs his hand.

“Hans?” 

It almost sounds like a whimper coming out of her mouth, and he can almost feel his heart clench at that sound. Her eyes remain closed and Hans wonders if she is having a dream, and that it will be fine if he just pretends he didn’t hear her the first time and leaves. But against his better judgement, he decides to stay.

“Yes?” He croaks, feeling his throat suddenly dry. He grabs her hand and takes a seat on the bed.

“Can you stay?” She murmurs.

Hans feels overwhelmed all of the sudden. His lower lip quivers, and he tries to gather himself together. That feeling hits him with a force, slapping him in the face and flooding his heart with that familiar warmth he desperately tries to get rid of to no avail. He gives her gloved hand a little squeeze, and mutters a quick,

“Yes.”

Hans doesn’t trust himself with words. He fears he won’t be able to stop himself from being irrational. Gone is the anger and resentment he has towards her, his defence mechanism crumbling down. Nobody else has ever made him feel that way, aside from Elsa. 

Elsa makes him feel like he is needed, like he is someone very important. She makes him feel seen, offering him a listening ear to his stories. She gives him a purpose, making him feel useful in the process. He doesn’t know how or when it started, but one thing he is certain of: somewhere along the line, between him plotting to get the crown and her trying to comfort him whenever he tells her about his life back in the Southern Isles he has fallen in love with her—her warm smile, her big cerulean eyes, her coldness. 

Oh, her coldness—he yearns for it, he craves it so painfully. He wonders if he will feel it in her kisses or the touch of her bare hands against his skin. His grip on her hand tightens, before he lifts it so that he can press a kiss over her knuckles slowly, as if he wants her to feel his touch, his attempt at reassurance.

Looking back, he notices that Elsa gazes at him so intently. She flashes him a small smile that’s enough to make his heart beat faster. Hans returns her smile, this time genuinely. Now, it’s probably best to allow himself to fall, and he does.
