It is often said that Venice grew rich on the “spice trade.” This is true – yet that spice was not exotic cloves or cardamom, but simple salt. Aside from fish, the lagoon does not offer much in the way of foodstuffs. Throughout its long history, Venice has always had to import its food, which requires money. The earliest Venetians built saltworks that allowed lagoon water to flow during high tide into wide basins, where it was trapped and left to evaporate in the sun. They then used heavy cylinders to roll over the salt, breaking it up into pieces that could be loaded aboard boats for export. It fetched a tidy sum – crucial for the tiny, but growing, economy of early Venice, and indeed for many centuries to come. It is often said that Venetians left salt production behind when international trade and commerce became their path to riches. That is simply untrue. Medieval and Renaissance commercial documents bear strong witness to the combined importance of the salt trade. Indeed, the Venetian government established its own Salt Office, which would grow to become one of the most powerful organs of the state.

Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records
This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.
88th CONGRESS. House of Representatives No. 5 Motion to Discharge a Committee from the Consideration of a RESOLUTION (State whether bill, joint resolution, or resolution) December 9, 1963 To the Clerk of the House of Representatives: Pursuant to Clause 4 of Rule XXVII (see rule on page 7), I EMANUEL CELLER (Name of Member), move to discharge to the Commitee on RULES (Committee) from the consideration of the RESOLUTION; H. FIORENZO is a queer fantasy-of-manners romance featuring hurt/comfort, swordplay, and a happily-ever-after. And it’s finally out in paperback! Shown here with some of the books that inspired it.
The World of the Castrati by Patrick Barbier Not just a thorough examination of individual castrati lives but also the operatic world that created them. Highly recommended, even (or especially) if you know nothing of opera.
Nicoletto Giganti’s The School of the Sword A swordfighting guide by a fencing master of Renaissance Venice. This book, combined with As You Wish (see below) and Vico Ortiz’s Fencing 101 class proved absolutely essential to making the fight scenes in Fiorenzo possible.
M: The Man Who Became Caravaggio by Peter Robb Come for the art history lesson about a queer Renaissance painter, stay for the tennis court castration duel.
Art and Life in Renaissance Venice and Private Lives in Renaissance Venice by Patricia Fortini Brown While the general history of Venice was necessary (see below), the more specific focus of Brown’s books provided absolutely invaluable insight into the the day-to-day habits of Venice’s historical citizens.
John Singer Sargent: Venetian Figures and Landscapes, 1898-1913 Sargent’s mind-blowing skill with oil portraits is well known, but his watercolour sketches of cityscapes and Venice architecture are truly astounding in their mastery of light and form. Seeing the city through his eyes over a hundred years ago was wildly inspiring.
Sargent, Whistler & Venetian Glass This was an incredible traveling exhibit of Venetian glassware, lace, and other amazing examples of skilled craft alongside paintings by American artists who drew inspiration from Venice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I had the good fortune to catch it as it came through Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. It also included an actual Venetian gondola (dry-docked, no felze) which gave me an invaluable sense of just how absolutely huge those things are.
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes and Joe Layden Invaluable insight into the training, choreography, and filming process for one of the greatest swordfighting scenes in cinematic history.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman It’s a swordfighting romance. Enough said.
Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner It’s a queer swordfighting romance. Enough said. (Although I have said far more.)
Ruskin’s Venice: The Stones Revisited by Sarah Quill Venice through the eyes of a Victorian.
Venice: A New History by Thomas F. Madden A general history of Venice was essential in creating Halcyon.

‘Venice and its History have always fascinated people from all walks of life. It is a place of contradictions – a city without land, an empire without borders. Everyone knows what Venice is, but fewer know why it is or how it came to be. It is not simply a work of art, but a birthplace of modern capitalism. The medieval market stalls of Rialto were the nerve centre for a complex commercial network that stretches thousands of miles, in which bond markets, liability insurance, and banking (among other things) developed. While the rest of medieval Europe groaned under kings and landed magnates, the Venetians formed a free republic – one that would last for a thousand years.’ – Thomas F. Madden

Note
richard madden kinda saddens me because he seems to want his privacy respected which is totally fine but like people have been speculating about him for years but he hasn’t said anything about it really, and yet like every time he starts hanging out with a new twunk it’s under the guise of them just being friends and then said twunk comes out in some way after they separate as if people aren’t gonna put two and two together, i would get tired of it too if i had to hide my relationships when everyone…kinda already knows anyway, but at the same time he’s allowed to just want to keep his private life to himself, it’s just that….that as a possibility has already been passed
I think part of the dynamic is that he wants his relationships to be private but inherently that's going to be harder in a m/m relationship than a m/f one because you can be a Joe Alwyn or a Carl Thomas Dean and not feel like you're being hidden away but if you're a Froylan Gutierrez or a Brandon Flynn there's a pressure to feel seen and acknowledged that the male partner of a famous woman doesn't have because of the long history of mlm having to hide their relationships.
But also he could stand to say something public very briefly (i.e. "I prefer to keep my private and public lives separate and x and I want our privacy respected") if he doesn't want these men to immediately go off an openly and loudly date some other hunk.
So it's complicated and I hope he finds the balance that works for him.

Soo, I'm almost through with the request, so I'll open it again and you'll have the chance to tell me your idea, but please follow the rules and don't give an idea I've already written.
Request Rules:
- No Anonymous (If you don't want me to publish your name, let me know).
-Only one request per user. After the one-shot is published, you have to wait one week to send a new request!
-Only requests for one-shots, no second parts. (I always vote for a one-shot that gets a FF).
Things I won't write about:
- M / M
- F / F
- Sub Tom Hiddleston/Oscar Isaac/Sebastian Stan/Richard Madden or their characters.
-Song Fics
There are no taboos for me and any taboo is welcome, however I do take the liberty to reject a taboo at times should it cross my boundaries after all.
Threesomes are also welcome, so M/F/M, but only with Sebastian Stan, Richard Madden, Oscar Isaac and Tom Hiddleston, I will not write for other actors.
Actors and character I write about:
Tom Hiddleston [Thomas Sharpe, Jonathan Pine, James Conrad, Thomas Hiddleston Jaguar British Villians, Will Ransome and of course Loki], Oscar Isaac [Marc Spector/Steven Grant/Jake Lockley (Moon Knight), Leto Atreides (Dune), Peter Malkin (Operation Finale), Santiago Garcia (Triple Frontier), Mikael Boghosian (The Promise), Rydal Keener (Two Faces of January), Abel Morales (A Most Violent Year)], Sebastian Stan [Bucky Barnes, Nick Fowler] and Richard Madden [David Budd (Bodyguard) and Ikaris (Marvel)].
All love

15 and 17 for the end of year book ask?
15. What was the book you were most excited about before you started reading it?
i think it was a tie between Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir and Graywaren by Maggie Stiefvater. neither let me down.
17. Top five books of the year
screams softly
okay i'm cheating and doing top five fiction and top 5 nonfiction. no particular order bc ranking things is hard. also not counting any of the comics or poetry.
fiction:
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li
Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
Graywaren by Maggie Stiefvater (with bonus shout out to Stiefvater's Brave sequel Bravely, which fucking rocked)
Gallant by V.E. Schwab
this year kind of felt like my goodbye to ya fic. Graywaren closed off the Raven Cycle/Dreamer Trilogy world, and Portrait of a Thief and Gallant were two i'd been looking forward to for a while (and i loved both, obviously), but i've definitely been more interested in adult sf/f for a while now, and after War and Peace i'm also more interested in reading more classic lit that i missed in school.
nonfiction:
Underland by Robert MacFarlane
Provenance by Laney Salisbury and Aly Sujo
Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake
Istanbul by Thomas F. Madden
The $12 Million Dollar Stuffed Shark by Don Thompson
Underland is i think one of the best books i've ever read? it's a travel memoir about caving, and also a meditation on climate change, literature, and human history. it has some of the most beautiful sentences i've ever read in it.
Entangled Life is of course the mushroom book, and it lives up to the hype. (Mr. Sheldrake has a cameo appearance in Underland and it's a delight.)
Provenance and The $12 Million Dollar Stuffed Shark are about the fine arts world, Provenance about an art forgery team, Shark about the economics of art. both wildly fascinating.
and Istanbul is a pop history read about the history of istanbul, which for being so important to world history gets glossed over all the fucking time. excellent read, i love Madden as a writer.

“Addiction is also maddening for loved ones because they’re used to being able to influence a family member’s behavior. Typically, loved ones do everything they can think of to try to get the addict to quit, ranging from “a good long talk” to bargaining, pleading, shaming, yelling, wheedling, threatening, and punishing. Over time, they usually come to realize that none of these things works.”

Logs for Thomas, Part 2: #4
Song stuck in my head: "Be Alright" by Dean Lewis
I woke up this morning with a terrible amount of anxiety in my gut. For most of today, I've just felt upset, scared, and a little nauseous.
Then, a little bit before writing this, I realized that today is the day we confessed our love for each other exactly five years ago. November 14th.
It's crazy to think about. I know how long ago it was. Ages have passed, and my life is so different now. Apparently, my body doesn't care.
It was so scary, and so wonderful, and I had... such high hopes for what would come after.
It literally could not have ended worse XD
Before I even realized the date, I also couldn't stop mulling over memories of that whole mess. I thought maybe I was just having a Bad Brain Day--and truth be told, that could still be the case; maybe the date is just a coincidence--but the date explains a lot. This has happened to me every year since then. November 14th is a rough day for me, as is December 23rd. The latter is significantly worse, at least, so I have that going for me (until then).
God, I hate the holidays.
I don't hate you, if that wasn't already clear. I never did. I can't.
I've been thinking about everything that went down with Shay this year. The idea of you hating me just doesn't match up with things you've said in the past. Then again, there are many things you've said that contradict with the things you've done.
But maybe thinking about it over and over is just going to drive me crazy.
It hurts, Thomas. I'm so hurt. I'm so hurt, and confused, and there's so much I would give just to talk to you again. Yes, nonplatonic things happened between us, obviously, but what I'm most upset about is that I've lost a friend, someone who was there for me for years and years.
Even back when I was in high school, when you'd call me stupid, insult my (former) religion, or make fun of my appearance, there was always a part of me that wanted, needed, you to like me, to be proud of me.
You said you were... You said you were proud of me. How can you be proud of me and hate me at the same time?
I know that, tomorrow, a lot of these feelings will dip back under the surface, and I'll be able to feel normal again, but waiting for those hours and minutes to tick is maddening.
One moment--I'm cooking d*nner, and I have to strain the p*sta.
Okay, I'm back!
Sorry, I know it seems silly to censor those words, but based on what Shay--and you, come to think of it--have said about y'alls sensitivities about f*od, I figured it was better to be safe than sorry.
Also, the weirdest thing happened to me a few minutes ago. I had already opened a can of p*sta sa*ce to add to the sp*ghett* literally moments before, but after writing one of these paragraphs and returning to what I was doing with dinner, I... completely forgot how to use the can opener?
Warning, boring rambling ahead. Skip to the blue asterisk to bypass.
Thomas, I've been using manual can-openers for years, especially more recently, since I've agreed to cook for my partners and their kids two nights out of every week (my girlfriend was overexerting herself both at work and at home, so we came to a consensus so she's less stressed out). But all of a sudden, it was really hard to twist the thingy correctly, and the lid wouldn't budge, save for a few dents in the can. And then I realized I was holding it upside-down. Except, I wasn't, because I tried it the other way, and that didn't work either.
I paced around the kitchen and got very irritated, wondering what the hell was going on.
Then, after taking some deep breaths, I tried again, and... I did it?
Look, I'm used to forgetting a variety of things--trauma does that--but this seemed excessive, even for me.
I got really freaked out for a minute or two because one of my biggest fears is developing early-onset Alzheimer's/dementia/etc., but I still had to finish making d*nner, so I put that thought on the backburner for a bit and finished what I was doing.
But then I noticed something else: I left a mess. I may not be the most organized person in the world, but this was on another level. I could barely even pour the strained n*odles back into the pot, so 1/3 of it was just strewn out on the stove, like a fresco of shitty m*c*roni art. And that doesn't even mentioned the sauce splatters all over the counter, among other things. I was even having trouble opening the can of br*sch*tta s*as*ning, and it's literally just a matter of opening the right side of the lid, which I did incorrectly several times.
Then, I wanted to clean everything up before setting the table, but I just... didn't have it in me? Every time I've made d*nner since I agreed to this deal, I've cleaned up after myself. Every time.
How did I forget all of these adult responsibilities so quickly? It was just, like,,, POOF, gone.
*And then I realized that these were all problems I used to have back in 2018, around the same time the affair started, when I was (bodily) 17 and just starting to learn how to cook.
So... it would appear that these mental/emotional flashbacks haven't stopped yet. -_-
That was frustrating--and unnerving. But I suppose this is further confirmation that our brain is still really fucked up over the whole thing.
I'll be alright, I promise.
Shit, I have to go now

F.A. Hayek Road to Serfdom
A sometimes quoted gospel of the conserative base in America is F. A. Hayek's work Road to Surfdom, usually quoted alongside other problematic works like the Black Book of Communism or Thomas payne's numerous works calling for separation from England. Problematic in the sense of being a highly persuasive text rather than academic. I would point out that Hayek disagrees with many aspects of American politics, especially the parties.
Hayek was born in Austria in 1899 and graduated from the college of Vienna after the First World War. He would later go to London for education in economics. I only point this out that he experienced England at the height of its colonial power, and Europe during a time of great political turmoil. His theories are likewise shaped and molded by the great maddening of the world. Communism itself would become popular in much of the world during this time and perhaps he saw it as a threatening force to the liberties of many of his countrymen.
His work is not a refutation of any government system, but a critique of government power. He believes that any rights enshrined to the people will naturally be surrender to the government in the course of business. That governments inherently require a subjugation of the rights of individuals in order to function.
So my issue with his theory is that he cannot model the behavior of thousands of different groups. His assumptions are invalid because people do not have inherent rights other to think for themselves and to die. All other privileges are social constructs, which is why countries have to keep spelling them out. What he calls the road to serfdom is *check notes* paying taxes? owning property? being able to use a bank? employees washing their hands after using the bathroom?
Hayek's extreme libertarian views undermine the value his work has. Economics theories are both mathematical formulas that explains markets, and legislative suggestions to politicians. I find it wise to ignore the proscription side of economics and focus more on how the math works, its assumptions are more important than its conclusions.
Every person performs complex economic value statements every day with how they spend their time and their money. A wise rule of thumb is that people do not act in their own best interest. Another rule is that when left alone, people tend to maximize happiness in the short term. Applying these two assumptions to government, then we can understand that long term projects must needs be influenced by the countries government. A group of individuals will not build hospitals, roads. factories, etc. if they can get something more useful now. This is one of the many reasons billionaires suck ass. They only act for their own best interest in the short term, like buy twitter, launch cars into space for no reason, build a metaverse that doesn't work, scam bitcoin, scam people looking to lose weight. The list goes on. But the actual important stuff is being done by the government.
What hayek calls the road to surfdom is just how human nature works. It isn't a bad thing. When I read it I thought it was going to be some sort of Ayn Aand kind of thing, and yep, it is basically academic Atlas Shrugged. it doesn't know what it wants to say, and it meanders all over the place. The funny thing is that Hayek had literal servants in London, and wrote a book about the road to servitude. I don't think he asked them about why they serve. Its capitalism at its finest being exercised in a class system. People serve because they want to survive, not because they surrendered rights to the government. Maybe that is what it looks like when examining multiple generations of people, but individuals when put to the sword often choose to live. Serfs existed in Europe and England as landless tenants living off the welfare of the lord, welfare being taxed most of their property every year. As landless individuals they had very little rights, but they weren't slaves. The lord controlled marriages, and often had exclusive rights to claim their children as servants/concubines.
So what did each individual surrender to the government on their own road to surfdom. According to Hayek, specific rights, but in reality, they choose to live instead of being slaughtered, or starved. They had a choice between life and death. This is what Hayek ignores in his book. He uses such a whitewashed version of what serfdom is and British history that the books message is lost. But to be fair it was inpolitic to talk about these kind of things in 1940's Europe, what with what was going on.

"Convict McCrea Raised Great Many Objections," Kingston Whig-Standard. June 19, 1933. Page 3. ---- Wanted Trial Postponed, Venue Changed and a Number of Out-of-Town Witnesses Called- -Judge Refused --- Convict William McCrea, charged with being a participant in the penitentiary riots, asked for a ten day's extension of time in which to prepare his case when brought before Judge E. Madden this morning. McCrea claimed that he had not been given access to the law books or n opportunity to afternoon although he had made application a week ago. When Judge Madden pointed out that it was impossible to delay the Court any longer McCrea pleaded not guilty. The accused turned down an offer to be represented by counsel and asked that he be allowed to plead his own case with the assistance of another convict who had a working knowledge of law. His Honor confered with the Crown Attorney and then gave McCrea per-
McCrea Objected As the jury were called to be sworn McCrea raised objection, saying that some of the jurors might have friends or relatives working in the penitentiary and might be prejudiced. Col. Keiller MacKay pointed out that the accused had had the opportunity of being tried without jury and had declined.
McCrea, as the first juror was called started to ask him if he had any relatives working in the penitentiary, but was immediately stopped by His Honor.
"Then can I ask for a change, of venue?" asked McCrea.
"That cannot be done," replied Judge Madden.
"But I don't believe it would be possible to get a jury here who are not prejudiced," continued McCrea. "I have not had the opportunity to build up my defence as I am not in the main penitentiary."
Col. MacKay pointed out that the accused had had an interview with Major Clark of Windsor in April and with W. F. Nickle in June.
"We tried to get Major Clark to defend us," said McCrea, "and were prepared to have a fund from the inmates for our defence, but the Department of Justice refused to allow us to subscribe."
Judge Madden told the accused the court had nothing to do with the rulings of the Department of Justice.
The swearing in of the jury was proceeded with; McCrea challenging twelve. The jury was as follows: Thomas Blomely. Cecil Baxter, Wilfred Bennett, John Burns, John J. Barrett, Franklin Cowan, Matthew Cox, Samuel McKane, R. T. Hitchcock, Charles Davey, James Foster, Robert Gibson.
Before the case itself proceeded, considerable delay was occasioned through the request of the accused to have certain witnesses called. Judge Madden ruled that witnesses living in the city would be summoned for the accused, but not those out of town.
"I take exception to that ruling," said McCrea. "Those witnesses are absolutely essential for my defence."
"Your request at this time is made too late," replied His Honor. "You had ample opportunity to have your witnesses summoned."
"I don't know why I can't get examine his witnesses until yesterday them."
"Well, your application is too late and there is no use arguing over it," Judge Madden then made an order for the summoning as witnesses for the defence, the following: Warden Megloughlin. Rev. Dr. W. T. Kings- ley, M. J. Walsh, Frank Doyle and W. M. Archibald. He refused to issue an order for the summoning as witnesses of Hon. Hugh Guthrie, Hon. Ernest Lapointe. Gen. D. M, Ormond, Gen. W. S. Hughes, Gilbert Smith and J. C. Ponsford.
McCrea, after Colonel MacKay had reviewed the case for the jury, and when Guard W. H. Godwin was called to the stand, asked for copy of Godwin's evidence in the trials of last week. Judge Madden said that the evidence has not been transcribed and McCrea reluctantly agreed to do without it.
"I am in a peculiar position," said McCrea. "In all criminal minds it is believed that the Crown prosecutor is out for all the convictions he can get. Colonel MacKay prosecuted me in Windsor when I was given fifteen years.'
"That does not influence the Crown here," said Judge Madden. "I am sure Colonel MacKay will assist you in every way possible. His duty is to lay all the evidence before the court and jury and not primarily to secure a conviction."
Guard Godwin Guard Godwin told of extra precautions taken on the afternoon of October 17, including the locking of the doors of the shops in the shop dome. He described the events of the afternoon, which started with the coming out of the "asylum" building of a number of convicts, who went to the shop dome. He figured that at least 100 of the 300 convicts congregated in shop-dome were armed with axe-handles, hammer-handles, crowbars and other weapons.
