Calvin Evans and Allyship

Thinking about Calvin in Lessons in Chemistry and how his character refutes ideas of colorblindness or individual logic as forms of effective allyship. (I don't know what else to call it, but by "individual logic" I mean things like "racism is silly because why should the color of someone's skin matter?", individual friendships, etc.)

However, in precisely this way, he also fails to see larger patterns or step up as a true ally to social injustice. It is precisely because he personally considered gender discrimination illogical (and never stopped to consider the deeper logics of patriarchy as a system) that he never noticed Elizabeth and other female scientists were being suppressed until she explicitly pointed it out; and while he strives meaningfully to help her be recognized, he does not quite make the leap to platforming women in general. He babysits for and spends time with Harriet, but his tendency to see them as simply "the same as him" prevents him from understanding how crucial the housing issue is for her, or why his presence at court was so especially crucial.

This isn't to dunk completely on Calvin; it was just an interesting thing to see portrayed. As they say, being blind to color means being blind to patterns as well. Disengaging entirely from and dismissing systems of oppression does not help deconstruct them.
