Threads is the superior ending to Stargate SG1.

Sam ends as the leader of SG1. She was Jack's protege and natural successor when it came to the team. She earned it.

Teal'c finally succeeds in his ultimate goal to free his people.

Daniel finds a romantic someone who just happened to be his surrogate mother's daughter. I prefer this romance to Vala and Daniel. 🤮 I love Vala (I might like her more than Daniel) but not her romance with Daniel.

Jacob dies (in a full circle arc for his character). After Sam finally gets the relationship that she had actually wanted with her dad. I hate it but it made the episode emotional.

Daniel comes back to life (yet again, he's a freaking cat) in a hilarious naked scene. Jack why you so nervous over there? 😂 I love Stargate for having some guts to a Jack/Daniel romance, even if it's just a wink and a nod.

Jack and Sam end up together by having their cake and eating it too. They both get to keep working together while finally giving into their feelings. They get around the rules because he resigns and runs the mountain as a civilian.

They ending the show with SG1 fishing 🎣 is a genius ending. Why? It's such an average everyday thing. But like why would that matter? Because SG1 has saved the earth and now get to finally rest and enjoy peace. They are a family, after what they've gone through. The subtext of Sam and Jack's dialogue hints that they ended up to together. Sam finally accepts Jack's invitation to fishing. Fishing for them was never about actually fishing but about living.

Because she knew if she was drunk and him being in the same room she would do something messy and it wasn't how she wanted to end the year. She leans against the bar, leaning forward to get the bartender's attention. "Just a coke, please." She doesn't need to look over to know the figure in her space. His scent fucking haunts her. She also saw him with Charlotte Kennedy on his arm, it almost makes her want to laugh because of how upset he got about Dylan at Fright Fest. She reaches out to grab her glass, pulling it to her as she turns, he's standing right there. "Please move." She says softly, raising her eyes up to him. His eyes boring into her, her head shakes. "Go back to your date, Daniels."

majority of the conversation around paul in the amc setting revolves around the question of whodunnit, jokes about him at the second dinner table scene of the pilot, or paralleling his mental illness to louis [a parallel the show admittedly draws upon - with louis stopping his suicide attempt bc “paul forever ruining grace’s wedding night, and [louis] not wanting to do the same to claudia on the anniversary of her escape”] what i intend to focus on, is the specific nature of paul’s complaints with respect to levi, and what paul and claudia represent to louis.

in the book, paul wants louis to sell the plantations & town homes they own in new orleans, and give louis the money so that paul could travel and become a missionary saving france from the godless jacobins. the paul that we’re introduced to in the show is… similar in motivation, but fundamentally divergent. tithe the money over to st. augustine’s so the house dont fall in on them, but the first dinner table goes as this after he says that:

whats of note too is the divergence of the draft v the pilot release. the show excises the freniere family w the exception of levi himself to drive home how paul’s objections to levi’s religious and ethnic background are overruled by the lingering shadow of jim crow.

paul is also reminded that his autonomy is conditional in this first dinner scene here: louis quips back to his point about sugarcane with “if daddy was still here, you’d be locked up in that asylum over in jackson”. its a reminder of the earlier point, but also speaks to something else.

bc of paul’s profound mental illness, he would never be allowed to live an autonomous life, much less hold authority over anyone: whether its the man of the house [as louis was in the du lac family], or as a bride [grace] or as the mother [florence].

this is strongly reminiscent of claudia — someone whos personal autonomy is entirely dependent on the purview of physically mature vampires by nature of permanently being trapped in the body of a preteen. it is also reminiscent of claudia in that louis in both cases plays a sort of savior in relation to them — whether its louis taking paul out of the asylum, or louis taking claudia out of the burning rooming home. louis views paul and claudia, especially claudia, as people that save him from his own self-loathing.. claudia somehow possessing this redemptive quality re: baby jesus…

louis loves both of them deeply, but as iwtv has established, love as a feeling does not exempt someone from enacting violence toward you. in fact, the very loved one that harmed you has an entire framework of rationalizing that violent act as being ‘for your[my] own good’ as is.

the title of this little post comes from the season one finale, where louis collapses in on himself to try to make sense of why he spared lestat, invoking paul and grace to create this red herring to the ‘murder of lestat’. but truly, the thread is false. louis did not abandon grace, and lestat’s death was only an attempted murder sabotaged by louis. modern day louis in the season finale triggers himself through daniel in order to provoke armand, the “protector of his pain”, to reveal himself + question him on the death of claudia, just as he questioned lestat on the death of paul in s1e6.

I originally had this whole series of posts about Radagast in mind - but ultimately I will probably scrap the project so instead, I'll share random trivia and cool stuff.

And I will begin with something I don't see ANYBODY talking about anymore: Radagast ALMOST appeared into the Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson trilogy. Like... he was there, you had the actor, the costume, the place in the scenes, everything was prepared, but he was scrapped at the last minute.

You might have seen this picture before if you are a long-time fan of the LotR movies:

This picture of a live-action Radagast comes from the Decipher Inc.'s "Lord of the Rings Trading Cards Game", an official set of collectible cards affiliated with the Peter Jackson LotR trilogy. By affiliated I mean, "based on the movies and using exclusively images from the movies". Well... almost since some characters that did NOT appear in the movies still get live-action pictures (and yes this was LONG before the Hobbit movies were even in the work).

Here are the cards depicting Radagast and affiliated items:

If they are not from the movies, where do these pictures come from? Well, they were created by Weta Workshop - who worked on the Peter Jackson movies. A lot of the cards depicting subjects not appearing in the movies were created after the trilogy was concluded, completely with new material, the concept just being checked by the movie-team, but the Radagast cards are a whole other story, and truly fascinating in this regard...

Because the costume and props were already pre-existing before they decided to make this card game. As I said above, there were plans for Radagast to appear in the trilogy at some point - as a background character in unspecified scenes. Daniel Falconer revealed all that in interviews: John Harding had been cast to play Radagast, they designed his costume and staff, they made him undergo photo-shoots for the upcoming movie... But Radagast was ultimately deleted.

However all was not in vain, since when it came time to create Radagast cards for merchandising, all Weta had to do was call back Harding, put him back into the costume, and tadaa!

We still have a few, low quality pictures of the behind-the-work designing of Radagast - very precious pieces and some of the only clues of this iteration of the character. Here they are:

All these pictures come from a 2008 forum thread on The One Ring forum where the upcoming Hobbit movies were discussed (it was still the time when it was thought it would be a duology instead of a trilogy). Link is here.

The images originally came from the website of Weta Workshop - it was on the same website you could find many more pictures of their behind-the-scene works for the card game, as well as the interviews I evoked above. Unfortunately the pages do not exist anymore... But the Wayback Machine of the Internet Archive allows us to go take a look at them! Praise our lords of the Internet Archive!

To conclude this post about a Radagast that never was, here is a picture that was taken of John Harding in his Radagast costume, standing between two cardboard cut-outs of Peter Jackson's Saruman and Gandalf. As such, we can see what the three most famous wizards of Middle-Earth would have looked like in the original Peter Jackson trilogy.

One phone call; someone covering her shift to inform her Jackson was there and drunk as hell. They couldn't get him out of the bar and all they could do was make out her name. For some reason she leaves her bed, sweats, a t-shirt and puffy cheeks that clearly let everyone who she passes by know she isn't doing well. She walks up to the bar, leaning against it. "Where is he?" She asks, her friend gesturing to the hall. She turns to walk away, barely hearing them try to call her back. She walks to the bathroom and pushes it open to a view she should be used to by now. His jeans around his ankles and the girl against the wall finding her standing there. A little huff; her name breathlessly leaving his mouth. "Are you kidding me?" She whispers. The girl scrambles to get away from him and storms past her, Parker stands there and stares at him; not being able to wrap her head around what she heard when she walked in. "Is this why you had them call me here?" She doesn't even stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks. "Haven't you hurt me enough?"

Jackson couldn't confirm nor deny just how many hours he had been sat in that very same booth. It was the same every Saturday night, to say he was a regular was very nearly an insult. While he had managed to avoid returning to his party boy days, the man still enjoyed a drink as much as the next person. Even more so now that he was out of the season due to injury. When his friend finally made an appearance he barely offered a nod in greeting, instead taking to downing the remnants of his glass. ok so this is obviously on different levels but i remember in your review for tsitp you mentioned how belly and conrad wanna make some kind of “big” impact of off these moments of silence and just staring at each other, and how it falles flag bc they don’t have chemistry.

And even though it’s a completely different project and theme with like, arguably the greatest actor of all time starring in it, i did notice that a lot of phantom thread relied on scenes like them just staring at each other and not saying anything, and overall the idea of passion through an understated display, and i wondered what your take on it was? did it work for you in the movie? i felt like daniel day lewis was giving more than the girl but i also think that’s what it’s supposed to be like?

and sorry for comparing this in any way to belly and conrad lol, it’s very ridiculous as i write it but as i was watching the movie i kept thinking of that post you made 😂

It's interesting that you use the word passion because I find Phantom Thread to be quite dispassionate, but I also find that with any of the PTA films I watch, there's an inherent distance, but what also makes Phantom Thread interesting I suppose is that the reveal is that they love each other while we spend the movie watching them try to control one another so that contextualizes the stares they have.

Like, if I'm watching Conrad and Belly, or a relationship like them, it's supposed to be cosmic and weighty and intense

it's supposed to be things unsaid, it's supposed to be history, it's supposed unfulfilled desire or desire deferred, it's supposed to be longing, it's supposed to be pining and aching and angst and heartbreak

which is why I was like, you need Ryissa this shit

hell, you need to Ness this shit

even fucking Jackson and Lydia do this better because Lydia is in the emotion and Jackson isn't a wall

It's supposed to be urgent and palpable and heart-stopping and frustrating, like even if he's supposed to be stoic or playing things close to the chest, he should look raw

and if she's going to be drunk and messy and in her feels and spilling shit, then go there

and have them feed off each other but you need a specific kind of chemistry for all of this and for someone who has grown up on 90s and 00s and 2010s dramas,

Belly and Conrad were laughable.

And then with Phantom Thread, watching them stare at each other is more like an exercise, is watching how control shifts in their relationship, considering a major theme in this movie is control and power dynamics so the stares are posing questions: is she simply a muse that he will use and discard? Is she an object? Is it love? Will she succumb to his rules? Will she be suffocated by them? Who has the control in this moment, in this scene?

and that worked for me because I thought they executed that well. I don't think I was supposed to watch them and see passion simmering between them in those moments, I think the first time they meet, we're supposed to see that flirty, awkward kind of chemistry and when they're horrible to Barbara we're supposed to see how giddy they are together but I find that the passion is mostly directed outward, in food

in Alma's indignation over Barbara 'mistreating' Reynolds' work, in her literally poisoning him,

as opposed to their stares, which is a chess match.
