Cheers to Friday Eve!! This #throwBOOKthursday stack is in honor of #AAPIHeritageMonth. These books have been some of my most enjoyable and memorable reads. They ALL deserve a #ReadThisSpine tag but I specifically want to highlight #TheAtlasofRedsandBlues by @devislaskar. This book still haunts me to this day. The prose is beautiful and the subject matter is critical. It speaks to policing of black and brown bodies that occurs every day. It’s an important book that everyone should read! ⁣ ⁣ Excerpt from @washingtonpost:⁣ The novel’s plot is both straightforward and complex: In a Georgia driveway in 2010, Mother lies bleeding from a gunshot wound to her midsection. Below her is the fast-warming concrete of the hot day and above is a cloudless, bright blue sky. Law enforcement officers with Kevlar vests and automatic guns traipse through the house and around her prone form, shoo the neighbors away and trade quips with the dispatcher. It’s a nightmarish scene, and one that comes to us only in fragments throughout the novel — but it is the place from which all other fragments unfold, moving backward and forward in time. “The Atlas of Reds and Blues” is a quick read, in part because of these short sections, some only two sentences long. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ REVIEW *no spoilers* : 🐇 Following my recent review on Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, it seems fitting to also say my piece on the gothic novel it satirises. It is clear Austen was influenced by Radcliffe’s writing style even in her non-satirical works, so Northanger reads as more of a tongue-in-cheek love letter to the genre than a mockery of it. 🐇 Udolpho, a seminal gothic novel, plays a powerful role in establishing what is now recognised as the classic gothic stereotypes - a tortured heroine and a dastardly yet suave male antagonist, facing off within the confines of a shadowy arching mansion, itself set in the middle of a sprawling wilderness. These clichés persist even in contemporary writing for good reason. They are engaging set pieces for a narrative to be centred around, especially when the focus of the plot is of dark familial mystery and stolen inheritance. 🐇 As with many classic works, the wind-up to the main events of the plot is prolonged. Whilst it pays off, many readers fall to the wayside when faced with a 200-page foundation to cover before much happens. However, as with most things in life, if you stick to it the rewards are rich and well-deserved. 🐇 The characters, particularly the protagonist Emily and her father M. St. Aubert, are emotional creatures and frequently weep, faint, and press hands at the slightest provocation. It is perhaps a little too saccharine, but is effective in emphasising the contrast between St. Aubert and cold, calculating Montoni. 🐇 TLDR: A cornerstone of gothic literature, with all the accoutrements - tremulous damsels, devilish captors, valiant rescuers and looming castles in the middle of nowhere. Throwbook Thursday - A Fragile Relationship: The United States and China since 1972

On August 8th, 1974, U.S. President Richard Nixon resigned in disgrace. Ironically, the plane that took him home to California was the same plane that had carried him on one of the highlights of his presidency- his ground breaking 1972 trip to China with Henry Kissinger. In a presidency filled with regrets, that trip was a victory that opened the way for U.S. China relations that endure today.

We published A Fragile Relationship: The United States and China since 1972 by Harry Harding in 1992, a book that expands more on the relationship between the U.S. and China. Below is an excerpt from the book:

“Richard Nixon’s visit to Peking in 1972 ended twenty years of confrontation and isolation between the United States and China. Throughout the 1950s, the two countries inhabited two different camps in a rigidly polarized world. The United States was the leader of global alliance of capitalist states created to prevent the spread of communism. China, its communist revolution victorious, cast its lot with the rival bloc headed by the Soviet Union, which viewed its mission as promoting the victory of socialism over capitalism.”

Night Nurse; She was lovely and warm--just what the patients needed! Dynamite in officers' ward!

After reading just the back cover, the first page and the last page I feel confident that I really don't need to read the 140 pages in between. Here's the lowdown: 

A lovely, naughty, ruthless nurse decides to settle into a job at San Nicholas Naval Hospital, located somewhere in southern California. She seduces and discards countless patients. Conveniently, this is a Naval Hospital in the 1950s, so all the patients are men. Somewhere along the way our nurse encounters a patient who cracks her hardened heart and she redeems herself.

... anyone could walk in here! But I don't care. She laughed low and wanton and dug her fingers into his shoulders, burying her mouth into his chest...

Later, as they rested, she turned to him. "Now," she said, "What are you going to do about your wife?" 

This is a 1960 Pyramid Books print. Original copyright is from 1951, by Star Guidance, Inc -- whatever that is.
