So when an uncommon assistantship to a reclusive Professor of mythology falls into her lap with an ungodly salary attached, her desperation for stability overrides her cautious nature.

To Millie’s dismay, the widowed Professor Callum Hughes and his estate, Willowfield, are more than she bargained for. The once magnificent home, known for its sprawling gardens and dazzling parties, is falling to pieces after the death of the professor’s fragile wife. What’s more, the staff has been reduced to the only three people not frightened away by rumors of ghosts, leaving the halls empty and languishing in bitter memories.

The professor himself is a grim, intense man with unclear expectations, unpredictable moods, and hungry eyes that ignite Millie’s own dormant passions. The closer she finds herself drawn to Professor Hughes and his strange world of flowers and folklore, the more the house closes in, threatening to reveal her secrets. But the professor is keeping secrets of his own and the most dangerous of all is hers to discover.

Hello book dragons! So I recently finished Forest of Souls and I have to say I really enjoyed this book. As you can probably guess I listened to it on my @librofm app. I have so much going on that Audiobook are really the only way I get to read right now. Which is sad in a way but I am enjoying the different titles Libro has available! • • From the start of this book, I knew I was going to enjoy it. It was a complex fantasy that felt just right. Like how you feel reading throne of glass or the geisha book. You just know it’s going to be an epic tale. I really enjoyed the characters as well as the magic system! I love the idea of magic being shown though the eyes. I also like the premise that it’s something your born with you don’t get a choice. I like that idea for some reason. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ REVIEW *no spoilers* : 🐇 Following my recent review on Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, it seems fitting to also say my piece on the gothic novel it satirises. It is clear Austen was influenced by Radcliffe’s writing style even in her non-satirical works, so Northanger reads as more of a tongue-in-cheek love letter to the genre than a mockery of it. 🐇 Udolpho, a seminal gothic novel, plays a powerful role in establishing what is now recognised as the classic gothic stereotypes - a tortured heroine and a dastardly yet suave male antagonist, facing off within the confines of a shadowy arching mansion, itself set in the middle of a sprawling wilderness. These clichés persist even in contemporary writing for good reason. They are engaging set pieces for a narrative to be centred around, especially when the focus of the plot is of dark familial mystery and stolen inheritance. 🐇 As with many classic works, the wind-up to the main events of the plot is prolonged. Whilst it pays off, many readers fall to the wayside when faced with a 200-page foundation to cover before much happens. However, as with most things in life, if you stick to it the rewards are rich and well-deserved. 🐇 The characters, particularly the protagonist Emily and her father M. St. Aubert, are emotional creatures and frequently weep, faint, and press hands at the slightest provocation. It is perhaps a little too saccharine, but is effective in emphasising the contrast between St. Aubert and cold, calculating Montoni. 🐇 TLDR: A cornerstone of gothic literature, with all the accoutrements - tremulous damsels, devilish captors, valiant rescuers and looming castles in the middle of nowhere.
